Also sending specifics in = others might use them first. It would ruin a surprise. Or if I then went on to rewrite properly people would think I stole my own stuff 😭

But yeah. It would be slow burn and wouldn’t be very traditional. I don’t write romance and with how he is/how you met I really had to think how I could work it.

But a few key things really popped out as usable.

I’d probably put Kayn somewhat on the ace/aro spectrum or at least demi plus very awkward and unsocialised. At least at first. (He never stops being Kayn though. Cos he’s Kayn. You’d have to learn to love it and he’d have to learn to be loved.)

Not just eating the human/rescue/physical closeness would initially be forced by the plot, then become more about physical comfort and life being more pleasant/easier with the human around.

Because he’s a bug guy. Not very social by default and not properly socialised. (I headcanon that he’s still fairly young for such a long lived race, he grew up isolated from any society and his mother left before he really developed social skills). Neurodivergent and severely traumatized. Doesn’t understand emotions. Very paranoid.

But slowly, boy does he ever come around in time and after certain shifts. *hides notes* His people are supposed to be social, traditionally lived in communal hives or packs, and while he trusts nobody he hates his cold monotonous existence of being alone.

Things he has to do and events in the story really get to him and stir emotions. His mother issues come up strongly and he does at least partly remember her.

Ps. He does gradually remember/learn about cuddles while keeping you alive. He has to carry you with your leg.

He unknowingly has love languages which come out quite naturally, makes you something (which is practical but could be construed as a gift) and accidentally gives you a pet name. 

And perhaps after some cultural misunderstandings, if he moults and reaches a particular instar, or during an awkward hormonal time of year - he forgets his dignity as a prince. There’s nobody else around to see.

You now have to deal with a huge openly goofy puppy bug who click-purrs in your ear while you’re trying to sleep, does bizarre things to impress you, crushes you for scratches and stockpiles food in your sleeping chamber. (And also gets scarily aggressive towards anyone approaching his human or the caves.)

Congratulations, he sees you as a mate and is being a giant dork about it. Good luck.

the one "romantic" scene i've written for IFA so far has him licking part of your leg wound clean, because he's done it himself. it's romantic for the player, not really the stranger, not really for him, and it's just kind of a "this feels weird but it actually works. what did they put in the bug people's blood. what the fuck." and it's intimate. it's nice. i liked writing it. but yes, he is on the younger side. it's a lobster situation. he's very...playful? in most scenes, though not in the one mentioned above, and i like to think it's because of alack of social skills.

they did basically live in hives. all different sort of bug people, but they lived and did everything together. the hierarchy's origins are unknown, but this did not mean that royalty was untouched. draumur was very active in every part of the civlization when she could be. he recalls reading of festivals and dances and social activities, but he could never recreate them. he's upset about his mother, angry at his father, and lost in the emptiness of what should be home.

but there isn't really anywhere else for him to go. he has to live in the cold. he doesn't want to come in contact with humans on a larger scale than a few people.

he wouldn't know he loves giving gifts and spending quality time. he wouldn't know he likes it when his partner spends time with him.

while it's obvious that kayn isn't actually a bug, he has a few characteristics. mostly in how he feels and sees. there's a few spots of chitin in his skin. he can make cicada sounds. a few other things. but his moult is more...skin just falling off. it's like when you put liquid glue on a surface and peel it off.

his mother tried teaching him those manners, but it was awkward, because she wasn't a man. during this time he's very...not confused, just a little spacey. he's learned to cope with it through thoughts and daydreams.

basically, yeah. he will space out and grab at you absentmindedly for warmth and nice hugs. he's always stockpiled food! he will continue to do so. if he doesn't know where it is, it's gone. someone has stolen it, he thinks. but that he'd allow himself to unlearn.

-Polo is Pooky's cheerleader, 100%.

-Had Polo accompanied Niccolo to the old asylum where the confrontation with the ghost went down, he'd kiss the stuffing out of Pooky for helping save Niccolo and killing the bastard.

-"Kick his ass, babe, I've got your flower," energy.

-Pooky often doesn't have patience for Polo's dramatic monologues and will kiss him senseless in turn until Polo can't think straight or remember what he was saying.

-Polo's nickname for Pooky is "hot stuff."

-They snuggle together a lot because Polo likes how warm Pooky is.

-Pooky loves it when Polo helps him groom his wings.

Cascarilla & Efun In Your Practice + Their Uses

To day in this post I want to speak on spiritual Earth, things that are made from the earth like clay, shell, this form is used different ways. This chalk is an good tool to have in your practice.

It comes from the bark of the Croton elutaria tree that is found in the Caribbean and places like South America. Also is found in traditions of western Africa.

The concept of of this is in all West African diasporic practices including Hoodoo, Vodun/Voodoo, Santeria, Candomblé, Umbanda, Palo, and others. The word 'efun' is Yoruba translates in english meaning ‘chalk.’ In the tradition like Candomblé, efun is a ritual to initiate’s where the head and body is shaved and then decorated with tribal circles or dots (as seen above) useing chalk that was made from white clay, eggshells, or limestone powder. Some practices even use it to make a cross on there arms or on the bottom of their feet before a ritual bath.

Cascarilla & Efun: Sacred White Earth. Over time after useing the bark, other African religions such as Santeria or even in hoodoo and others in the US started using crushed powder egg shells. These were easier to get.

Cascarilla: ☝️Made from white eggshells, particularly from a Black Hen.

Efun: ☝️Efun is a white chalk that is comprised of ground snail shell and white clay.

What's Are They Really Used For. It is used for a offering Butt NOT a food offering, but an offering to deities of White meaning a of high elevated energies. (God) for example. In Africa it would be to Obatala and other high level good energies.

It's used for magical writings, painting the body during rituals, and as a medicine. In the Bantu system you have 'zumbi' other African practices like Vodou uses Zombi. (Snake deity) Or the God in the Heavens and God on earth like Nyambe/Nzambe.

Cascarilla Powder: The can be sprinkle anywhere to ward off negative energy: your home, altar, bedroom & your body. Add it to your protection powder. It’s also good to used in bath & washes, even in your divinations. I can tell you it has many uses.

Cascarilla Chalk: It can be used to make sacred symbols, magickal sigils, or veve’s and definition. (Sigils used in different Vodun/Voodoo practices). Cascarilla chalk can also be used to mark boundaries for sacred space sites or decorate sacred items.

Modern Witchcraft Uses: the power of eggshell powder has become prominent among other traditions, including Wicca. However, most non-West African diasporic traditions refer to Cascarilla simply as eggshell powder.

For Cleaning: If you want to cleanse yourself, make a mix of Florida Water & Cascarilla for a simple yet effective spiritual bath simple yet effective. (You can also add dry ingredients to it) You can also add it to a premade floor wash like the Chinese wash.

Well, you caught the Boris thing quicker than I did. That's all I'm saying.

Idk tbh.. I just thought that Dr Fig was too suspicious.. and Boris and Plague Doctor walks the exact same way..

I mean Boris is hunching over and Plague Doctor is not.. but because Plague Doctor isn't hunching over he has this weird way of walking because he has a bad posture but tries to be upright.. and well Boris doesn't seem to have a hunchback so he can still try walking upright causing his legs spread wider to keep the balance..

Or that's my conclusion.. other than that Boris keeps saying how he doesn't like stuff's attitude.. and well Plague Doctor killed one of the nurses.. and later Annabelle said that she's sure that Plague Doctor is a human so..

But the weird way of walking is what caused me to think that Plague Doctor might be Boris..

I can’t choose. Both ideas sound good.

Exploring the emotional side of things and creating culture in the dead ruins appeals, but the fallen king with the disease on his breath also sounds like some Masque of the Red Death ish.

Perhaps you can do a little bit of each (very shortened to not overstretch yourself). Like initially you get to know Kayn a bit as you heal, you have the dreams during a fever. Maybe he sings something from his mother to calm you. Then the king notices you and swoops in?

Or they’re two different routes and a crucial choice triggers where the story goes.

I don’t know how doable any of it is as I don’t know how to make games (excluding one quick go on Twine) but this sounds cool.

I’m writing theories in my head

this could be interesting! the current 5k words (context 10:16 was 8k) is being written to work a lot like 10:16 did. you get endings depending on how much kayn likes you, with the two death endings from the original still being present + potentially more. the best ending, let's say, has the two of you being very happy - even if he gets what you promised you'd give him.

current idea is also that everyone died before he was born, more or less. the only people he's ever known have been his mother (who mysteriously disappeared) and some hunters he's helped in the past - though through conversation, you get a feeling that he's killed them all, even if he's "helped them" before. you can't tell if it was killed by a disease or by war or by something entirely - and kayn's father returning at a bad moment might give you the answer.

i'll draw him eventually, but imagine just the same guy, longer hair, bigger, different mask, and something just...more off about him than with kayn.

-It would take a lot of work on Pooky's part to make Twistee mad at him. They rarely argue.

-That said, Twistee is also a little shit and enjoys riling Pooky up.

-Usually because this results in Pooky pinning Twistee against a wall for a passionate makeout session. Win-win.

-Whenever Pooky is tired, he likes to nap curled up on top of Twistee. Cat rules apply, and Twistee will not move until Pooky wakes up.

-Twistee probably also pets Pooky between his horns and/or rubs his back while he's sleeping to help him relax.
