[Commission]
#dungeon meshi#dungeon meshi spoilers#marcille donato#winged lion#better drawn mdzs#<- art tag I really need to change.#Turns out the secret to drawing better was having someone offer you money to draw.#I jest. I just had a blast with this prompt and I seriously appreciate the commissioner for letting me have the chance to push myself.#And for giving me permission to post! Hi! If you're seeing this: thank you again!#Let me be clear: no I don't quite know where this came from. It just happened. My chakras unblocked for a few hours.#You too can unblock my chakras with money and commission me to draw cool art B*)#We are so far off from when this is relevant so this one is really just for the manga readers. *****Spoiler notes ahead:#So...As someone who read dungeon meshi monthly for many years....I admit to not seeing Marcille becoming the dungeon lord coming#Hilarious too; re-reading and watching the show made me realize that this outcome is pretty strongly foreshadowed.#Ryoko Kui distracts you by putting the focus on Laios being the 'one to break the curse' but nope!#This was the culmination of her goals and desires.#And - for those who did not have to suffer as us monthly readers did:#YES. WE NEARLY ALL THOUGHT THAT MARCILLE HAD TO DIE.#The last 20 or so chapters were a constant spiral of: 'Oh this story isn't going to have a happy ending is it?'#She just keeps losing herself! The winged lion plays her like a puppet and she is his perfect doll! So full of conviction!

So, I'm going to either make this joke more or less funny by explaining it, Colin Robinson-style:
Nandor isn't being an idiot by misspelling 'knowledge', he's spelling it phonetically.
Why? Well, it's probably not just that English is a horrendous abomination sent by god to punish us and an even worse trail for English learners either, but Persain is a (mostly) phonetic language!
This means each letter has a corresponding sound and words are phonetic in spelling (again, for the most part), unlike 'knowledge' in English where there are like...at least three?? unnecessary extra letters.
So, what's the phonetic spelling of 'knowledge' look like?

I'm crying right now
So we have Eulalie, looking gently at a doll with a damaged eye and smiling sweetly, before saying those lines :
And right after, we have the look on Pluto's face, who is eternally trying to hide his injured eye behind his strand of hair :
Yes Pluto. You're pretty in your own way. *sobs*

Personally the amount of people who are either "Jake is a stupid himbo" or "Jake is actively malicious" blow my mind. No, Jake isn't stupid, and he's not evil. He's a sixteen year old who is implied to have a mental disability and/or brain damage (it's not exactly clear, Caliborn claims they have the same developmental disorder and Dirk iirc worries that Jake hit his head too much, I guess you can take either with a grain of salt but I digress), and has not had meaningful real life interactions with other human beings in years. He is in the wrong for his actions, but it feels. Purposefully ignorant to claim he's just stupid or just evil for them.
He's socially stunted. He wants to emulate heroes in movies but lacks self esteem and experience. If the alpha kids had enough time to be more fleshed out (and let's be real, if Hussie cared about Jake) this might have been explored more thoroughly. He'd never had the opportunity to learn how to cope with a relationship, how to communicate his needs, or understand that he can't control how other people perceive him like he can through a computer screen.
He doesn't know healthy boundaries because he's never had to use them, and this goes both ways (allowing his friends to sexualise him and treat him like an object, as well as constantly complaining about his relationship with Dirk to Jane) Like yeah he does run away instead of communicating with Dirk and yeah he does dump all his problems on Jane. I love Jane, but one of her problems is her bottling up her feelings and people pleasing until everything blows up. She should have told him off much sooner, and while he was being a dick, it was partly because she allowed him to feel like it was okay to do, since she never told him it wasn't after the first few times or when she was starting to get aggravated.
His problems with Dirk are a little more complicated because we're never actually shown their relationship or how it broke down, but from what we can gather, Jake felt overwhelmed by Dirk's intensity and decided to ignore him rather than tell him try and avoid confrontation but leading to Dirk being frustrated and breaking up with him. Dirk claims he feels like he bullied Jake into a relationship, and though I personally think that's him making it seem worse than it was, it does mean that Dirk probably was trying to go too fast. I've best heard it is Jake being an introvert pretending to be an extrovert.
This is not to say I don't think people can't dislike or even hate Jake, but it's like. Idk. Misinterpreting a character and disliking that version of them is a little redundant to me.
#homestuck#dirkjake#jake english#dirk strider#jane crocker#character meta#homestuck meta#this is kind of in response to those people in the “worst homestuck character” tourney lol#the notes on those posts are atrocious especially the ones about the alpha kids. especially roxy#god if you think roxy is a perfect sngel i assume you haven't read the comic#btw im not mad at the person running the polls or whatever for that they seem fairly chill#its just that homestuck fans are sometimes stupid#and lack reading comprehension and critical analysis#long post#ummm jake dislikers ur fine but please. be correct about him if you're going to not like him#ok bye lol

Errors, “Errors,” and Sci Fi
@strawberry-crocodile
tvtropes calls stuff like the wolf example "science matches on" which I think is a pretty fair shake
This. This is what’s got me thinking so much about errors. There’s a certain danger, here. A certain way that this particular effect — delicious dramatic irony — tempts the mind when reading old stories, even true ones.
What do you know about R.M.S. Titanic? I ask my class every year, and the first hand rises. “It was unsinkable,” the student inevitably says, and everyone is nodding, “or so they thought.” I write the word UNSINKABLE on the board, underneath my crude drawing of a ship with four smokestacks. It will be crossed out before the end of the hour, but not for the reason they expect.
“I find no evidence,” Walter Lord, preeminent biographer of the ship’s survivors, wrote, “that Titanic was ever advertised as unsinkable. This detail seems to have entered the collective mind so as to create a more perfect irony.” Indeed, historians’ examinations of White Star Line documents show the shipbuilders themselves worried it would be so large as to risk collision; they stocked several more lifeboats than 1910s regulations required.
The War to End All Wars (deep breath, satisfied exhale), also known as World War ONE. Chuckle. Shake of the head. What if I told you that this phrase, used primarily in American newspapers after the fact, wasn’t meant to be literal? Nowadays we’d say The Mother of All Wars, or One Hell of a Fucking War, but we wouldn’t mean literal motherhood, literal intercourse. What if I said the armistice and the Lost Generation and the Roaring 20s were all braced for another outbreak of European conflict, and yet we still failed to prevent it?
Did you know they were so confident in the safety of the S.S. Challenger that they put a civilian schoolteacher onboard? I do, because I’ve heard that one repeated many times. Only, see, it’s got the cause and effect reversed. Challenger launched on a day the shuttle’s engineers knew to be dangerously cold, because the first civilian in space was on board. And NASA knew its shuttle project would be cancelled entirely, if they couldn’t get that civilian’s much-delayed entry into space in the next two weeks. So they launched on a cold day, and killed her instead.
These are all what cognitive science calls Hindsight Bias on the personal level, what sociology calls Presentism on the cultural level. Social psychology’s a little of both, is primarily interested in why you’re sitting on your couch in a Colonize Mars shirt watching PBS and chuckling at the fools who believed in El Dorado. It wants to know why the mind flees straight from “marijuana will kill you” to “marijuana will cure cancer” without so much as a pause on the middle ground of its real benefits and drawbacks, its real (mild) risks and rewards.
And they can paralyze the sci-fi writer, if you think too much about them. Jetsons is futurist one decade, retro the next. “There are no bathrooms on the Enterprise,” the creators of Serenity say smugly, as if Gene Roddenberry should’ve simply known that decades later it’d be acceptable to show a man peeing in full view of the camera, nothing but the curve of the actor’s hand to protect his modesty. “No sound in space,” the Fandom Menace says, “No explosions in space,” and “A space station can’t collapse in zero-G.” Only then NASA burns a paper napkin outside of atmosphere, transmits music using only the ghost of nearby planets’ gravities, and logs onto Reddit long enough to point out the Death Star would implode in its own gravity field. And now we’re the ones pointing, the ones laughing, at those earlier point-and-laughers. Self-satisfied, smug in superiority. As if we did the work to find out ourselves, instead of just happening to be born a little later than George Lucas.
#errors#continuity#sci fi#presentism#star wars#titanic#world war i#science marches on#history#started a new post because i got waaaaaay off topic here#if you think the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (1993) should've had feathers#you're a lot more ignorant about paleontology than the people you're trying to criticize#science was not handed down to us in its perfect complete form circa 1943#stop for a second before you call out someone else's reptilian denonychus#someone else's oxygenated moon#and ask: am i better read#or am i just more recently born?

@jegulus-microfic - prompt: resume - word count: 219 tw: implied suicide, double mcd
resume.
He cradles the older boy's face in his hands.
"James," Regulus starts, and James' eyes immediately fly open. "Can I tell you something?"
There's a mischievous glint in his eye. He hasn't changed much, even after all these years. "We're married, darling. You can tell me anything."
Regulus smiles. He loves mornings like this, where they can wake up together and laze around for a while, in their own little bubble.
"I love you," he whispers, leaning in, closer to James' face. "I love you, to the edges of the universe and back."
"But the universe is always expanding." James is grinning now, even though they play through this conversation often.
"Then so is my love for you," Regulus says, and the gap between them closes, mouths connecting and devouring each other like starving men.
Regulus wakes up.
James is not there.
No, James is in the graveyard thirty minutes from his cramped apartment. Regulus knows that; he makes the trip every day.
Regulus is not confessing his love to James for the thousandth time.
He is lying facedown on the carpet.
Glass shards litter the floor. When he moves, he winces, feeling them get embedded in his body.
He is bleeding.
He does not care.
He will join James.
Because without him, he could never resume his life.

You’ve heard of the browser wars....
I just recently made a long-overdue defection in the search engine wars, and I’m entirely pleased with it.
You know how shitty Google results are when you need some fairly niche information that won’t be in a Wikipedia article, mainstream news, or some shitty celebrity gossip outlet, these days?
DuckDuckGo has cleared my skin, watered my crops, etc. I was kind of ambiently glad it existed for a long time, but was like “well, privacy good, but my infosec practices are already sketchy at best, and google’s been doing this for a long-ass time; they’re probably better at it, so why bother.” But no, my friends, google is better at something but these days that something is delivering clickbait to your fucking eyeballs.
I was frustrated with a very specific science question the other day and getting absolutely fucking nowhere with google, swapped over to duckduckgo on a curious whim, and it... didn’t get me exactly what I needed immediately, but it did give MUCH more relevant search results than google did. And that’s, well, because enshittification. Maybe someday, duckduckgo will also live to see itself become the villain, but for right now, it’s fucking useful, and it is now my default search engine on every device I use (and also every work computer i have reason to touch).
#the browser wars#google#duckduckgo#(the science question was not the sort that web of science and whatnot were useful about)#(it was the sort of mundane detail shit you learn from the venerable postdoc two labs over if you're lucky)#(but that never makes its way into any widely-read literature on How To Do The Thing)#(so what I WANTED was the perfect stack overflow post)#(i did not get that but i got much more useful guides from DDG)

I'd probably have to read the printed version and web version back to back at some point to note all the differences but... ough
#sorry i'm going to be excited about this comic for the next month#nofna#okay having finished this now--#and sorry if this doesn't make sense to anyone who's completely unfamiliar with this comic in advance-#the 'popcorn ending' (printed version) is nice to see but i think the web version hits harder. if that makes sense#so i'm kinda tied on which ending i 'prefer'- i think both are good though#also considering i've read the web version a good 4-5 times and the printed version only once- i probably can't make that judgement yet#easy answer- i do like Nutsedge :] so it's nice to see the ending where nothing bad happens to her#but also- NT suddenly becoming a greenie-esque villain out of nowhere felt a little jarring#as well as SV suddenly turning a corner and becoming a 'good guy' (arguable)- considering the first three books are about#/him being too stubborn to change or accept any outside worldviews . Him suddenly coming to his senses felt out of place#<- probably biased because i like characters being bitter to the end and ultimately destroyed by their own hubris#the web version is probably‚ objectively‚ a bit better#but -#(spoilers- if you're planning to drop ~70 bucks on getting these books)#the conceit of SV actually perfecting his style‚ using it once‚ and then immediately getting tooth-brained- was pretty cool#assuming it's meant to parallel him spending months tormented by trying to perfect it while something's still missing-#and then dying before he can narrate it to the audience‚ so that we never know what he figured out.#hard to articulate these thoughts but tl;dr- popcorn ending also had a lot to think about

Now that JJK 271 is out and had...an ending...I have one issue and question.
Why are people trying to force a narrative that most Shonen endings are bad?
Haikyu!!, Slam Dunk, Assassination Classroom, Mob Psycho 100, Dororo, Gurren Lagann, Zatch Bell, the ending of Chainsaw Man part 1, Trigun, Ashita no Joe, Gintama, the JJBA endings (especially Steel Ball Run and Stone Ocean), Golden Kamuy, Azumanga Daioh, Beck, Pandora Hearts, Great Teacher Onizuka, and way more than I can list all had great endings.
Heck, Full Metal Alchemist, a manga that many hold in especially high regard, is widely regarded to have a perfect or near perfect ending.
I have my own issues with the jjk ending, but some of them stem from issues I've had with the manga for a while so it wasn't surprising for the issues I've been having to crop up at the finale, especially given the rush to get there. But there are so many people quick to bash the entire category of manga. The examples of bad, mediocre, and/or controversial shonen endings are often just very well-known series so of course when they end people are loud about it.
As unsatisfied as I, and many people are, with this ending I feel like it was almost inevitable. Gege's health took a steep drop towards the latter half of the series and even more during this final arc. (I still swear by the fact that most manga, especially jjk, should be on a monthly format instead of weekly).
At the end of the day, endings are hard. You have to wrap up multiple threads in a succinct and satisfying way, and this is even harder when its a long running series or a series with a LOT of expectations. Coupled with the deadlines, restraints, and meddling most mangaka face when writing its a difficult task to wrap up hundreds of chapters in just a few.
Anyway it really has been our Potential Kaisen.
#Every time someone says every shonen ending is bad a Haikyu!! fan gets their wings#Saying the last few chapters felt mediocre is completely fair they did to me as well#But saying gege is the worst writer in the world?#You haven't read enough manga and you're also just ignoring Perfect Preperation and Hidden Inventory#Its okay to be upset and angry and frustrated but please don’t take it out on people#jjk 271#jjk spoilers#pocket rambles#And I don't wanna hear anyone say “well its his first manga” like thats not much of an excuse#I specified Hiromu Arakawa specifically because they both had very similar cases of writing previous oneshots and short stories beforehand
