Short answer:

So I'll pull details from the HP wiki, and if I need a random plant name or potion ingredient and can't be fucked making one up (or I don't need it to be something symbolic etc) I often use this random generator and either use those names straight out, or tweak them a bit before using them.

Long answer:

Well I'm a huge fan of soft worldbuilding (where you don't outline all the rules and details and instead have a sort of immersive description that leaves a lot unsaid) because I feel it makes things more realistic, like you're glimpsing little parts of things that are utterly normal and therefore don't need explaining ya kno. So when I write classroom scenes or any kind of 'lore' I try not to explain it and rely instead on characters reacting to things to convey its importance, normalcy, or strangeness.

I do this alllll the time but I did it HEAPS in white dove. When Tom is in trial and he gets a 'tier nine' cell (which I made up) I don't bother writing something like "oh my gosh tier nine is the worst and most intense type of cell you can get and it has these rules and these horrifying conditions" bc I don't need to. The whole room reacts with gasps and horror and even Tom looks freaked out (tho that's mostly bc he was expecting a sentence of a specific amount of years and was confident he could just outlive it bc immortal and that's the moment that he's like oh fuck, but the point still stands).

So the emotions/reactions of the people tell you everything you need to know without me having to outright describe it. You don't need to know what a tier 9 cell is, you get that it's fucking baddddd. In fact, it's sort of even better than explaining it bc our imaginations find the unknown even scarier than something horrifying described in detail.

In the same chap a bit further down, I make reference to a 'peeping charm' which I made up on the spot. Same deal but different context, it makes sense that magic users have a spell that'll act like a peephole in their doors, there's no reason to say 'this spell will let me look through the door without the person on the other side noticing so I can see who it is before opening it' because this would be a totally normal thing. So I just wrote it like it wasn't a big deal bc to this character in this context, this wouldn't be a big deal.

On the other hand you can also totally introduce something new that DOES need some detail/exposition. At the beginning of this same chap I say that Tom's lips and cheeks are flushed, that this a tell-tale sign of veritaserum poisoning, and that they've obviously given him heaps of the stuff. I made this up just bc I wanted there to be something the MC could visually and easily see from across the room that would establish that Tom's been given a SHIT TON of truth potion so that for the rest of the scene, the audience in the room with him AND the audience reading the chapter knows he's being forced to tell the truth. It just added to the tension of the moment and made sense for the context (a trial lol). It also gives the scene some layers - Tom was fairly brief and controlled when he actually speaks in that scene, and I wanted it to be unclear if this is because he's being super self controlled by choice as he's normally prone to being, if he knows that he'll be unable to lie and doesn't want to let on any more of his secrets, or if he knows honesty will destroy the picture perfect tragic image the newspapers have made for him if he's TOO much of a monster.

I'm rambling but the point is, if you're going to introduce details or concepts it's really important to have an understanding of who would know that stuff already, who would find it commonplace and who might be totally unaware of it. Sometimes everyone in the scene would know about it already but the AUDIENCE doesn't, and that's when you can use like casual conversation/questions between characters to give more info whilst also showing that this is all very normal.

Having a character not know something is an easy way to have another character explain something to them but there has to be a solid reason as to WHY one would know it and the other doesn't.

An example of a time I've used this is in Mimicry when the MC knows troll blood will ruin Tom's potion but Tom doesn't. Normally we'd be like 'wait what, why would a nerd-ass know it all like Tom not know this,' but it makes sense to my understanding of the character that he's the sort of person who got a recommendation that 'Zoological Potions Ingredients' was the BEST textbook on ingredients and went off and fucking memorised the whole thing and didn't think that anything could have changed in the 70 years after it was published (Tom strikes me as the sort of person who chases 'the best' and doesn't think much past that is worth considering). Hence why he didn't know that the classification for trolls changed and that further research was done, since he also strikes me as the sort of person who would consider reading up on the social status of trolls to be a little pointless lol, but surprise bitch it wasn't.

So I made up most of that except for the existence of Bundimuns and trolls - I went hunting on the wiki for some obscure substance I could reference in passing for a potions ingredient (and found Bundimuns), and honestly I can't remember how much about them I made up and how much is canon (I think they're mentioned to be used in cleaning products canonically...?)

But the point is more that this scene doesn't just flesh out the world, it tells u stuff about the two characters and how they interact. It tells you that Tom is very studious but doesn't like to revise his opinions, it tells you that the MC knows their shit, it tells you that Tom is suspicious (he instantly challenges them by referencing the textbook not saying what they're telling him), and it tells you that MC is a good bitch who would help out a dick like Tom just bc it's the right thing to do. It also shows Tom's flaws - his disregard of learning about other creatures/beings/people and the way they're treated in society tracks with what we know of his character, and I always think it's important to demonstrate (either directly to him within a scene or to the readers) that this is a stupid thing to do. In this case, his lack of interest in the struggles of others nearly fucked his own potion, he's only saved because MC 1) cares enough to read up about it, 2) sees the importance of revising formally formed opinions/understandings, 3) steps in to help him even though he probably wouldn't have done the same.

So that's soft world building, ya know, using these things to tell you about the characters, using knowledge and lack of knowledge, reactions, etc etc. Most of the details I make up are there to serve a purpose for the plot, but honestly that's just bc I'm writing short super condensed stories that don't have a lot of space for proper world building. In Seven Devils (and Mimicry to a lesser extent) I have a lot more of these details there to create an emotion/sense of the scene just for the sake of setting that scene, but that's for bigger works with more room to breathe.

charles is an intp ! i’ve probably said this before & it’s like weirdly integral to my portrayal of him ( or at least gives a lot of insight into it ) so for those of you who don’t know what mbti is at All , it’s a personality typology theory that divides human personalities into four categories : introverts / extroverts , intuitives / sensors , thinkers / feelers , and judgers / perceivers. therefore , charles is an introvert intuitive thinker perceiver , or if you want to get real deep & use cognitive function theories , he uses Ti ( introverted thinking ) , Ne ( extroverted intuition ) , Si ( introverted sensing ) , and Fe ( extroverted feeling ) in that order. 

if you read about the basic characteristics of an intp , the personality type ( sometimes nicknamed “ the logician ” ) is known for being “ philosophical innovators, fascinated by logical analysis, systems, and design. They are preoccupied with theory, and search for the universal law behind everything they see. They want to understand the unifying themes of life, in all their complexity. ” source 

the description above is charles to a T , and i’ll explain why ! he’s a huge introvert. by no means does he gain energy from social gatherings , and he’s far more content to explore the contents of his own mind than to explore the minds of others. he’s an intuitive , which means he’s more concerned with abstract , unconventional ideas , and can be quite detached from the world around him , while a sensor would be focused on reality and their concrete senses. he’s metaphorical , dreamy , non - traditional , and unfocused ( though that is not solely an N trait ). he’s a thinker , which means he relies on logic & facts more than his own feelings or the feelings of those around him. lastly , he’s a perceiver , meaning he prefers to work at his own pace without rigid structure , and prefers open endedness over set plans and commitments.

I know that’s a lot , but it makes a lot of sense when you read about it. now , to get deeper , mbti is supported by the theory of cognitive functions ( Ti > Ne > Si > Fe for charles as I mentioned earlier ). the whole idea is that every personality type uses a “ function stack ” of different modes of thinking / interacting with / viewing the world , and there are four predominant functions per type that are all accessed at decreasing levels of development. the first function is the most developed , the last is the least. so , without further ado , here’s charles’s personality type explained by his four functions. i’ve taken the most useful parts of the article on the following website. source

INTPs’ Dominant Function: Introverted Thinking (Ti)

Ti involves the application of logic and reason for the sake of understanding a given situation, system, or problem. INTPs use Ti to bring structure and order to their inner world, granting them a strong sense of inner control. Inwardly, INTPs are highly self-disciplined, working to effectively manage their thoughts and their lives. The disciplined nature of their Ti compels INTPs to frame many things as a goal or challenge. These challenges may be physical (e.g., trying to achieve an ideal state of health or fitness), intellectual, practical, psychoemotional (e.g., becoming self-actualized), or later in their development, interpersonal (e.g., “perfecting” a relationship or becoming a skilled lover). In order to succeed in these personal challenges, INTPs are apt to impose rules on themselves. However, because of the wayward influence of their auxiliary Ne, they commonly end up breaking or sabotaging them.

It involves an attachment to past experiences and past precedent—to the routine, familiar, and predictable. Types with Si in their functional stack, including INTPs, tend to eat a fairly routine or consistent diet, “eating to live” rather than “living to eat.” Si types are not only conservative with regard to their diet, but with respect to the material world in general. They tend to be savers rather than spenders, seeing excessive material consumption as unnecessary, or perhaps even immoral.

Like other Si types, INTPs also have a diminished need for novel physical pleasures, lavish surroundings, or material comforts. They are minimalists to the core, relatively unconcerned with their physical surroundings.

INTPs’ Inferior Function: Extraverted Feeling (Fe)

Last but not least, Extraverted Feeling (Fe) serves as INTPs’ inferior function. While having inferior feeling doesn’t make INTPs emotionless robots, their feelings do seem to have a mind of their own, often coming and going as they please. Realizing how hard it can be to voluntarily contact or summon their emotions, INTPs tend to feel awkward and uneasy in emotional situations. Although they may be cognitively aware of the appropriate emotional response, if they’re unable to directly tap into their feelings, INTPs can appear clumsy, mechanical, or disingenuous. This can be unsettling to others who are looking for outward signs of authentic emotion from the INTP.

Fe is also concerned with maintaining social harmony. While Ti and Ne may inspire INTPs to function as provocateurs, their Fe encourages them to operate as peacemakers. Far more often than INTJs, INTPs will “bite their tongue” in order to avoid hurting or offending others. Doing so also minimizes the likelihood of emotionally-volatile situations which can engender anxiety and disquiet in this type.

Another aim of Fe involves establishing emotional rapport and connection with others. But again, while INTPs may do at fair job at reading others’ emotions, they may fail to actually “feel” what the other person is feeling. This is why INTPs are sometimes described as “outwardly warm, but inwardly cold or calculating.” Fe can be a bit of an act in the first place (e.g., political glad-handing), but this seems particularly commonplace among INTPs and ISTPs. Although casual social engagement may help them feel good for a while, perhaps even give them an ego boost, without sufficient Ti stimulation, it won’t be long before they’re scoping out the nearest exit.

Finally, it’s not unusual for INTPs to oscillate through phases in which they feel they don’t need other people at all. Especially when their work life is running on all cylinders, they can feel invigorated and invincible. But the psyche will only permit this sort of Ti lopsidedness for so long. Eventually, INTPs start feeling a bit lonely or empty, sensing that something important is missing from their lives. This prompts them to reinitiate contact with others, at least until they feel compelled to reassert their independence. Striking a balance between their independence (Ti) and relationships (Fe) can thus constitute a lifelong challenge for this personality type.

How did you discover the show?

Through tumblr, although special mention goes to this particular ML AU piece because two months before I got into Voltron, ML was my default go-to interest.

Was it love at first sight or did it take you a while to get into the show?

Pretty much. I watched A:TLA and LoK before it, so combined with all the talk about it on here I decided to give it a go.

I think I binged half of it in a day before stopping myself and thinking I had to tell my sister about it so we could watch it together lol. The first few episodes are kind of heavy on the set-up, but “Fall of the Castle of Lions” and “Tears of the Balmera” solidified my love for starting to explore Hunk’s and Pidge’s characters more.

Do you have a favorite episode?

But for what it’s worth, I own these Garrison trio shirts, and the tradition is that I wear my Lance one and my sister wears her Shiro one whenever we sit down to watch the latest season drop)

Black because of her history with Zarkon and how it parallels Shiro’s history of trauma. Also, as Abby put it, Black “is the biggest Shiro stan & I respect her for it.”

Haggar. Even if some things don’t entirely make sense (yet...?), I absolutely love the slow build-up we’ve been getting for her. She’s been in the thick of things since the first episode/10000 years ago, and we’ve slowly seen her piece together her own past (one of the biggest reasons “Blood Duel” is a favorite, her flashback was great) and manipulate things to her own advantage; I’m so happy she’s going to be the final boss of the series (or co-final boss if Zarkon and Lotor are going to come back in some shape or form, though maybe merely as her puppets).

Galra for their species diversity and history (not entirely fair since they’re given a disproportionate amount of focus but still lol.)

How/Why did you join the fandom?

Wanted to chat with other fans of the show because I’d already bored my friends who were either casual about it or indifferent to it to death lmao. I’ve been relatively on the outskirts since I first watched it in July 2016 because I’d rather avoid fandom drama, but I’m a bit more active now and hope to write a bit for it, as rusty as my skills are.

Care to share a favorite headcanon?

Um I like a couple of popular ones like TransGirl!Pidge, past Alforan, and Yorak for Cosmic Wolf’s name. Was really big on Acxa and Keith being siblings too until s6 seemingly disproved it. 💔 Some others: - Kolivan is Krolia’s dad. (thanks @aaawunder now I’m going to be sad if this doesn’t pan out)

- Coran knew Keith was Galra ever since the Castle scanned everyone in the first episode and he had to look at the human medical data when he stuck Lance in a pod in “Tears of the Balmera”. (keeping in line with how he knew Pidge was a girl; guy is up-to-date on everything going on on his grandfather’s Castleship)

- Hunk either got his current headband from a relative who has since passed away or it was a gift from Lance after the original one he got was wrecked somehow, and that’s how they became BFFs. - Keith’s jacket and gloves were gifts from Shiro. - Lance’s jacket was a hand-me-down from one of his older brothers.

- Shiro grew up with either a grandparent to explain his “old soul” tendencies/perspectives or was raised by distant relatives that he didn’t connect with much (basically adopting @bosstoaster‘s backstory from her Spectrum series for him because it’s amazing). It kills me that Josh was able to mention the former at a panel because that means we’re probably not going to get to see much of his backstory in canon, and I’d really like to see from his perspective what his and Keith’s friendship means to him. If he was in a similar situation of isolation growing up, if he saw that in Keith, etc.

- Alteans aren’t really hung up on gender due to their shapeshifiting abilities. Alfor’s referring to Allura as a princess when she was still so young was due to personal preference whereas the majority of Alteans would refer to their kids with gender neutral pronouns until they’re roughly the Earth equivalent of eight.

What do you think is the best part of the show?

The characters and the genre.

For me, characters frequently make shows of this nature.There can be an interesting plot, but if I don’t care about at least some of the characters to some degree, I’m not as inclined to watch. As many complaints as I have about certain aspects of this series, I’ve been endeared to these characters since s1. There could always be more content (what I would give for more filler episodes for the team to just bond and chill), but with what we have been given, there’s enough there for me to find enjoyment in.

The genre acts as a supplement to that. For me, one of the best things about space-faring adventures is seeing these characters placed in (literal) alien settings and watching how they react to all the possible scenarios the incomprehensible infinite of space has to offer. (And I’m a sucker for such things, being simultaneously made to feel so cosmically huge in one’s consciousness and so incredibly small in the vastness of a universe largely unknown to us.) There’s so much you can do with that. Any hopes and wishes for future episodes / seasons?

- Tying into the previous question, one of the things that sort of made me sad about s3-s6/the second production season is how we didn’t get to do a lot of planet exploring. There’s an entire universe to play around with, and I know it’s impossible to show everything, but with s7 effectively being a road trip season, I’m ecstatic, largely because this provides us with the chance to see civilian Galra. I’m super interested in seeing how those dynamics play out between those not involved with the Empire and all the people who suffer under Galra oppression (we see this touched upon in s3e01 with Kolivan and the BoM, and at the time I was disappointed that it wasn’t explored more, but if they’re saving it for this season I can forgive them).

- Going further, how do mixed people fare under these circumstances? I’m really excited about this because I feel like this would be the perfect opportunity not only to expand upon the VLD universe as whole, but specifically dive into the backstories of Sincline. We know at least the upper echelons of the empire wanted nothing to do with them — how many Galra outside of that hierarchy feel the same way? People of their parents’ species?

Likewise, we could see if Keith being part Galra and Krolia being around gets the team into any sort of trouble. Since Keith’s bigger on actions than words, seeing him in a situation he can’t physically fight his way out of and having to rely on his team is a scenario of continued interest to me.

This is already way too long, but I’ll end it by saying I’m so stoked about all the potential road trip shenanigans the team could get into and for them visiting Earth again. I figured we’d be going back there around the end of s4 or s5 back when seasons were still 13-episodes long, and finally getting to see that play out after two years of waiting is again, very exciting for me.

And, uh, ships. I have my preferences. If they play out, I can die happy. If they don’t, I’ll always have the quality fanon content that keeps me involved with the fandom (all you creators are great 💜)

Do you think you’ll stick it out until the end of the show?

Barring unforeseen circumstances, most definitely. Been with it since a month after s1 dropped and it became my default fandom obsession, will be here when s10 drops in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Hi there! you’re all manners of sweet and kind thank u my advice abt approaching comics is going for solo runs first, this is how I, personally, did it and it’s way easier than jumping in on team books, or worse events bc they tend to be messier and need more bg info and pre-existing knowledge than a comic that focus on just the one character; I also feel it’s good to start with current or at least recent comics, you can always read the old stuff when you’re better acquainted with how comics work and which characters, artists and writers you like (or can tolerate).

i was gonna do a whole list of mcu characters’ solos because most people entry point to comics rn is superhero movies, and hmu if you want that, but instead I think I’m gonna rec you some good comics that are either separated enough from main marvel continuity as to be intelligible without extensive info gathering, or I just think they’re great and worth a bit of confusion (part of starting out reading comics is not knowing fully wth is going on sometimes, but stiking with it for some good art or for characters you love -I’m not gonna go so far as to say for good writing bc that’s just not realistic):

if you like yourself some spider-people:- silk (2015) and vol 2 (2016) are my absolute favorites- I’m not very much into spiderman but I read renew your vows  and it’s lovely,  it’s just not a main universe comic it’s an au where things are as, imo, they should be with ye old web slinger, and it’s good for getting your feet wet in the huge pool of spider-man comics;- I love miss jessica drew (spider-woman) but her solo is……. questionable if someone has a good jess drew intro rec pls tell me so I can pass it on, - miles morales has been written badly in more ways than one but I love him so I suffer, I can direct you without scruples only to his novel tho, absolutely lovely and not written by brian michaelbendis lmao- anya corazon is a really good character that marvel loves to forget it has, let’s not make the same mistake;- black widow 2014 and 2016 and bw: the name of the rose are all good comics (I know technically nat isn’t a spider person but like nothing about spider-woman’s powers screams ‘spider’ either so..

for wakanda I’d say good recent start-ups would be: - black panther (2016), - black panther: world of wakanda (w/ a lesbian couple as protag), - and rise of the black panther (ongoing)

some non x-men team books that are easier to approach as a beginner imho:-young avengers vol 2 (vol 1 has its moments if you want to start from the beginning with them but a lot of it involves the civil war arc and stuff.. also some characters die, the art is less good and I want to protect people from 17’s yo cassie lang’s nipples poking through her shirt.. I wish someone had protected me tbh) -I want to rec some Runaways but besides the current run (which is alright) there’s a lot to be said against the writing in most of the rest of them maybe vol 1? to have the origins pinned down-I feel like after a small read through of what exactly the hell was going on with secret wars you could approach A-Force vol 1 and the first half of vol 2 (the second half ties in with civil war II and I’m not touching that mess) and that and avenger world and sometimes secret avengers to me are good avengers books-she hulk 2014 and totally awesome hulk are my greens of choice but if you want an intro to bruce banner idont actually know, sorry-for the asgardians: thor 2014 and it’s follow up mighty thor, thor: god of thunder, angela: asgard’s assassin and its sequel angela: queen of hel, and loki: agent of asgard are my pick of this crop-we also have Fun here at marvel comics on occasion and both patsy walker aka hellcat and squirrel girl are nice in their own way although the latter isn’t really my thing

some follow up on the young avengers:- hawkeye (2013) an absolute fan favorite, good to discover that actually clint barton was a good character it’s that the avengers movies are just bad and hate people with disabilities- a couple of follow-ups to that (x) (x) and the kate bishop solo all pretty nice- america chavez’s solo (I’m just here to suggest gay comics, that’s almost all I read really)

I want to rec Champions to people but frankly it’s just a long series of event interruptions and bullshit interspersed with a couple of nice moments so far, so I’m gonna rec you some kids that are in the champions and have solos I haven’t already mentioned:- kamala khan’s book is probably my favorite ongoing series at marvel right now about any non-mutant char, I cannot say enough good about it,- nova is nice,- miles morales (spider-man) and amadeuscho (totally awesome hulk) are also there but I’ve already mentioned themalso in this house we love and respect elektranatchiosand any other attitude just isn’t tolerated.

on to the x-men, gotta love those guys, you just gotta:- like I said I prefer to tell people to start from recent comics but with the xmen that’s so difficult? it’s been 10+ bad years for them because of the movie rights situation and just marvel being shit in general, so my one recent team book to approach the x-men is prob x-men ‘92? because its based off of the xm animated series so you don’t have to straightaway deal with some mutant plague, eugenics plots, and other catastrophic events, but you can still get to know more of the char we all love - I want to say generation x vol 2, it’s not a good starting point for anything really but I love it so so much I had to mention it even tho it was cancelled and I’m still angry as hell about it.

the solo situation is better. I’m gonna be able to breathe without tasting my own bile while I type this, hurray!-all new wolverine follows laura kinney as she takes up the mantle from logan-iceman, good solid comic abt coming out and ice puns, who doesn’t like bobby really-jean grey, yes she’s a teen girl in this, yes it’s weird and I hate de-aging characters but it’s nice to see her train with different mutants, struggling with the incoming phoenix force and her adult self’s shadow, not really great entry point to jean grey but id read it anyway-if you were into the 00’s xmen movies like me, or at least a normal person’s amount the phoenix recently returned and with her adult!jean grey, it was a good book for me and good if you want to later start reading the actual phoenix saga (which is a lot of material so starting small with this might help) -I love wandamaximoff and despite what they’ve done to the maximoffs in order to bring them into the mcu (was it worth it for that result btw? really?) her recent book was good and I genuinely loved it -storm’s solo is so good, you’re gonna fall in love with an het ship and you’re not gonna regret it either-rogue and gambit, is ongoing and it’s good to get a little acquainted with these characters but mostly it’s about explorign their relationship

I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of good x-men content atm but I can’t stop thinking I need to mention that there are ongoing series you could pick up its just.. I hate them.. some started out promising (xmen gold, astonishing xmen), but they’ve not developed in good directions imo, but I still feel they should be mentioned, there’s also a weapon x comic if you want to go for a more bloody kind of book and xmen blue if you like time displaced teens or something? god its bad

jeez this is so so long and guess what? I haven’t even finished yet.. there’s some excellent indie comics out there and with those you really don’t need to worry abt knowing any 30 years old lore or anything you pick them up and they explain themselves like any other normal media out there, I know, be still my heart:

- lumberjanes is my absolute favorite, a little corny, but so much fun and cuteness and if I could go back in time I’d give it to my little bi self so she’d know she’s not alone and anything I feel that ways about has a special place i my heart js

- Motor crush, there really isn’t any other comic book with a black lesbian as protagonist out there that I can think of, good if you’re into motorcycles but if like in my case that threatens to put you to sleep, it also has a sci-fi streak and solid character work, you won’t regret giving it a try

- moonstruck, cute non-white gay werewolves and other mythological creatures are there, I feel this cathers to me specifically every time I open it?? bless

- Hi-Fi fight club or heavy vinyl (they changed the title) if you want a period piece that’s fun and cute and gay (I meant it about me reading only gay comics as you can tell)

- saga, for a space, well ya know.. saga I feel that I can describe it as romeo and juliet in space with added racial commentary except they don’t kill themselves, I have to say not my favorite but you might stick with it for the characters, I sure do

- the wicked + the divine, I feel very much the same about this as I do about saga, only this is mythology based so like.. I sold my soul to it, but please do tread with care there’s a lot of deaths in it and so many of these dead people are gays and/or poc.. I’m none too pleased about it and I’d understand anyone not wanting to pick it up, I mean the deaths are basically in the premises of the books but that doesn’t change the end result..

lastly like I said dc is not my area of expertise but I’ve been following with pleasure both batwoman and green lanterns, and mr miracle was an amazing comic so I thought I’d mention them

Collabs and Secrets

Summary: You decide to film a video with the whole buttercream gang, your best friends, but find it’s much harder to collab with them, especially when you are keeping it a secret that you’re dating one of them. 

A/n: So this idea came to me a few days ago and I just wanted to keep it simple but I sort of melded a few ideas and this is the result lol. Forgive any grammar mistakes and spelling errors, also if you notice any inconsistencies just hmu, hope you enjoy!

You fixed your hair and stuck a tongue out at the camera before centering yourself on the huge, empty, sofa then began your intro. 

“Hey, guys! It’s me, (y/n), again! And today...” You paused for suspense, “I have the whole Buttercream gang with me!” And on cue, Josh, Jack, Joe, Oli, Conor, and Caspar jumped out from behind the sofa. 

“Yay!” Caspar yelled excitedly as he fell face-first on the sofa and slid down the front. Jack began stroking your face while making creepy eye contact with the camera and Joe jumped forward and took a seat on the sofa, almost kicking you in the face while doing so. 

You jumped back before facing the camera, “I swear one day, these boys will do something and I’m gonna get seriously injured,” you joked to the camera. 

“Aweh (y/n)...” Conor took a seat next to you before sharply turning to face the camera, “You’reprobablyright, I’msorryinadvance!” He spoke really fast which broke all of you into laughter. 

After all of the guys settled into the sofa or tried to, but Jack and Conor ended up having to sit on the ground, on each side of your legs. Joe and Caspar were seated on each of your sides. Oli on Joe’s other side, and Josh on Caspar’s side. “Everyone seated? Can we properly start now?-” 

“Where’s Mikey?” Caspar interrupted which is when you guys started noticing he wasn’t to be seen. 

“Probably taking a shit,” Josh joked which made you chuckle. 

Joe said gesturing at you, “It’s alright, (Y/n) can take his spot in the ‘Buttercream gang’.” 

“Cor, Mikey’s gotten hotter!” Oli flirted but was interrupted by an appalled Jack. 

“That implies that Mikey was hot, to begin with,” he said with while side eyeing the camera. 

“You are right,” Oli mumbled making everyone laugh more but you turned your attention back to the camera. 

“Anyway!-” You blanked on what you were gonna say next and Josh caught you. 

“Did you forget?!” He nudged you with his hand, which was placed over Caspar’s shoulder

Joe peered over to Josh while snickering, “She did!” 

“She was so busy getting all of us for one video, she actually forgot to plan the video!” Caspar stated before you slightly shoved him, but he was being over dramatic and fell on Josh then rolled onto the ground. 

Everyone laughed again but before Caspar could get up and take his spot again. Josh and Jack lunged for his spot. You scooted closer to Joe and watched them both try to fit on the sofa as Caspar also began fighting for his spot back. 

Oli looked at the camera and said with a deadpan expression, “She’s our only female friend if you haven’t noticed.” 

Conor chuckled then went cross eyed. “A FUH-MALE?!” which no one must’ve heard over the sound of Caspar, Josh, and Jack arguing. 

“Guys! Guys! Guys! The Video!” You tried but they would not bother until they each had the seat next to you. As they continued fighting, you just stared into the camera with a blank expression, Joe noticed and began doing the same. Then Conor noticed, then Oli, and they too stared at the camera as the three men acted childishly. 

Finally, Josh won and got the spot next to you, with Jack stuck beside him and Caspar forced to sit on the ground, near your leg, next to Conor. After they settled down and became jovial again Caspar noticed you and the other boys,“Wha- huh?” Caspar asked as he looked back and forth between you four and the camera. 

“Oh, nothing,” Joe said as you all cut the act and laughed at how in sync you four were. 

Jack pretendingly grumbled in the corner about how unfair it was that Josh got the spot next to you when Oli peered over, “Buddy, we can all hear you-” 

“I don’t think he cares, he just loves (y/n) too much!” Joe kidded to which you made this face at the camera. 

Jack and Conor, who were on opposite ends of the frame began joking around loudly while Joe, Caspar, and Oli also began cracking their own inside jokes, forgetting that they were there to film for your video. 

You tried to grab their attention and focus it back to the video but your voice drowned out, Josh noticed and thankfully helped you out, “Are- Are you guys done?” Josh asked with a slightly annoyed tone while glancing back and forth between each of the boys and the camera until each of the boys had quieted down.  

You looked up at Josh and smiled, opening your mouth to say something when Mikey walked out of the bathroom and stood in front of the camera, blocking it. “You guys started filming without me?!” he questioned with his back to the camera. “Why- Can’t you wait-” He took a step back as he questioned you seven. 

“Mikey!” all of you shouted in unison. 

“The camera, mate!” Joe shouted as Mikey almost knocked over your set up, but he whipped around in time and didn’t.

“Can you just sit down, LP?!” Josh yelled, starting a tsunami of people yelling at Mikey too. So Mikey just mumbled nervously and walked up to the sofa. 

“Mate, whatcha looking for? There’s no space on the sofa?” Joe pointed out as he gestured at how cramped everyone was on the sofa.  

You nodded your head at Joe’s comment and pointed to the ground but Mikey just gestured at the sofa, “I dunno- Couldn’t you make some more space? Just- like- scoot around-?” he shrugged.

“If there was more space on the sofa, why would we be sittin’ on the ground, Mikey?” Caspar questioned. 

After moments of banter, Mikey also resigned to sitting on the ground, near Jack’s feet, even though he was occasionally met with tickles and tasers from him, which distracted everyone but you could finally get back to the video. 

“Ok! So as you’ve read the title, this is a new type of game, basically, a ‘who knows me better’ and a ‘hypothetical scenarios’ game put together-.” 

“Oh boy!” Joe exclaimed before you could finish your sentence. 

“Is there a prize or anything?” Oli questioned as he peered over to you. 

You nodded, “There is actually!” You turned back to the camera, “Whoever wins gets a kiss from me!” In the corner of your eyes, you noticed Joe’s eyes widen then his expression change to pretend like he wasn’t shocked. 

“Really?!” one of the boys questioned, with hints of surprise and disbelief, while looking at you but you broke out laughing. 

“No,” you replied while laughing at their reactions, “The prize is actually winner’s choice,” you explained when you finally caught your breath.  

“That’s even better!” Conor said as he slowly faced the camera and creepily smirked. 

“Oi! To a limit! I’m not gonna murder anyone or like that cause you won-” 

“Wait, I can still ask for a kiss if I win?” Jake flirted in front of the boys but before Joe chimed in. 

“IF you win.” 

“Oohhh!” Josh went glancing between him and Joe, who then began pretending to get angry and put their fists up, implying that they were gonna fight for you. 

You chuckled before going deadpan and screaming, “The video!” They laughed it off then went back to normal so that you could finish the instructions. “There are some rules for the ‘winners choice’ but I’ll get to that after the game instructions-” 

Conor mumbled something to Jack, causing him to giggle, and you made a mental note to edit that out before going back to the game. “So I asked you guys, my followers, to send in questions and scenarios, some which would include these guys and some which wouldn’t. Then each of you,” you gestured at the boys, “-would get a chance to answer. Whoever answers closest to what I would do or have done in that scenario, gets a point!” 

Oli chimed in, “So we could literally have any answer and if we convinced you enough it would be right?-”

“You couldn’t have done a simple ‘best friend vs. boy friend?” Jack questioned jokingly. 

“She just needed an excuse to get all seven of us on the same screen,” Conor stated while laughing. 

“Yeah plus she doesn't have a boyfriend,” Caspar responded to Jack.

“...Or best friends,” Joe mumbled before giggling. You caught his eyes and gave a glare before jabbing his side with your finger, making him jump back. He pushed you away and you two had a minor poking fight but your attention was caught by Mikey.

“OK, (y/n), but I am obviously at such a disadvantage,” Mikey pointed out, “I’ve known you the least amount of time out of all these boys- I don’t even know your favorite color-” 

“Mikey, we’ve known each for over two years, I reckon that’s a good amount of time to get to know someone,” You told while Conor explained to Mikey that it wasn’t a fact-based question-answer game but rather a set of hypothetical scenarios where they would have to predict how you would act. 

You got back to your sentence, “Whoever has the most points at the end of the game is the winner and can use me however they want-” when the last sentence came out of your mouth you knew it was wrong. And broke out laughing. 

“Whaddya mean ‘use you’ (y/n)?!” Joe questioned while everyone laughed their ass off. 

“What I mean is, the winner can make me do something and I won’t be able to refuse, but... but... nothing inappropriate and nothing which could hurt others. Those are my rules, other than that I’m good with whatever the winner makes me do, cause I trust you all equally.” 

Conor looked up at you with a weird smile and you giggled, “Not you though, I don’t trust you.” 

You picked up your phone and informed the camera, “I have my questions and my score board here,” you showed the boys your notes on your phone without giving away too much. “Shall we get started? Question number one,” 

In an instant, all of the boys dropped their side conversations and diverted their full attention to you. Your mouth opened to read a question but you glanced up and snickered, “Why’d all of you just get so serious so fast?” 

They looked around at each other and also laughed at their behavior when Oli answered, “It’s cause we really wanna win that prize.” 

Your eyes widened and you spoke to the camera, “Am I gonna regret ‘winners choice’?” the guys started talking again but you interrupted, “ANYWAY! Scenario #1: If I was a time traveler, where would I go: the future or the past? And what would I do there? I’m open to your explanations,” you finished but then a detail came to you, “Remember: more than one of you can get points for each question so you guys can team up and discuss, but there can only be one winner, in the end.” You looked around to find them still watching you, “Go on!” you had to say before they began talking amongst themselves.

Jack, Mikey, and Josh discussed on your left but you heard that they disagreed with each other so Josh quit sharing with them. 

Conor and Caspar whispered near your legs, but you didn’t think it was an answer being talked about because they were giggling and rambling on. 

On your right, Joe had turned to face Oli and they seemed like they were actually being serious about the answer so you leaned in closer when Joe turned around and smiled, surprised that you were so close to his face. 

You were tempted to kiss him, and you knew he was too, but the boys were watching so he just began talking with a silly accent, “Excuse you, ma’am, how may we help you?” He asked while extended his neck out to you, making you move back into your original sitting position. 

You chuckled before to trying to eavesdrop on the others again until everyone was ready with their answers. 

“Ok let’s go in a circle, starting with Josh, ending with Joe.” You said as you clapped their shoulders at their names. 

“I think you would travel to the past, before WW2 and try to stop Hitler.” He said so with a serious face.  

You nodded, “Alright, next: Jack,” You peered over Josh and met Jacks eyes who was just finished giggling at something he and Mikey chatted about. 

“Ummm... I think you would travel to the future and visit a personal milestone in your life,” he glanced at the camera before mumbling, “Like our marriage.” 

Which made the guys chuckle but you just rolled your eyes at him and moved on to watch Mikey answer. “I- uh-” he chuckled nervously, “I think you would travel to the past and meet your mother?” He sounded like he was guessing which cracked you up. 

“She doesn’t need to time travel for that, she could just hop on a plane,” Conor joked. 

“Oi, you know what I meant!” Mikey argued as he pointed at Conor. You just laughed it off and looked down at Caspar for his answer. He said past too, and something about bananas. 

Then Conor went, giving the funniest and most unbelievable answer ever, following him it was Oli who was actually the closest to something you would do then finally Joe went. 

“I think you would travel to the future and maybe meet your future self -not a milestone or anything- but ask a couple of questions- maybe try to pinpoint any mistake you made so you could avoid them after you return to present time?” He seemed really into his answer and the more he explained it you could imagine yourself doing that too. 

“Alright good answers, boys, out of the seven of you, I only found three to be something I would do.” The boys leaned in closer to hear who got points, “ the first point goes to Oli-” he pumped the air and smiled as you continued on, “ the second point goes to Jack! I would totally visit a future milestone in my life- just not our marriage- cause that won’t ever happen-” you said with slight disgust as you faced the camera before breaking character, “And the last point goes to...” you waited for effect before swiftly turning the other way and meeting Joe’s eyes, “Mr.Joe Sugg!” He cheered and shouted in victory but you looked down to see the opposite in Caspar and Conor. 

Caspar began- pretend- crying. 

Conor stood up and began swearing profusely which made all you of a laugh, “This game sucks!-” he acted, “You’re a liar, (y/n)- a liar, I say!” He stormed off the frame before entering back with a large grin on his face. He ran a hand through his hair and sat back down for the next question. 

You cleared your throat and waited until everyone was done chatting to carry on to the second question, hoping it wouldn’t take as long as the first question/answer because, after every answer, the boys got too distracted & started having side conversations and wrangling their attentions back for the video took all the energy out of you. “Guys, question #2:” they quieted down and listened, “If I had no obligations for 24 hours, and had the ability to do whatever I wanted, what would I do?” You decided to let the boys answer in whatever order they felt in and reached the end of that answer session. 

Caspar, Joe, and Jack got points at the end of the round since they all predicted that you would either just sit in your room watching tv/youtube or try to meet your idol. 

After a few questions, you decided you needed a break so you called a time out and checked the clock. 8:38. 

“You boys wanna order pizza?” You asked as you held up a pizza place pamphlet. 

“Sure.” Caspar voiced before he went back to chatting and joking around with the others. You tried calling from the living room but the boys were so loud that you had no choice other than going into your bedroom. 

You pulled out your phone and began dialing the pizza place when the door closed and two arms wrapped around your waist. You turned around to find your boyfriend, Joe, with a smile on his lips. 

“I didn’t get to tell you how gorgeous you look,” he leaned into to give a soft kiss. 

When you pulled away you looked up to meet his eyes, “How’re the boys? Do they suspect anything?” 

Joe chuckled to himself then answered, “I don’t think so, me and you’ve been best friends for so long, they’re just used to seeing you and me so close, I mean- Jack can’t stop flirting so-” 

You chuckled, feeling bad for Jack but also delighted that you were so good at keeping everything under wraps. “I know, I know, but something tells me that he’s just doing it all for this video, something’s changed & I just think he’s pretending.” 

Joe nodded and took a step forward, making you take a step back, towards your bed. “Hey,” you whispered, “Not right now,” you warned trying not to smile as he continued walking you towards the bed. His hand rubbing circles on your hip, underneath your shirt. Your legs hit the edge of the bed and you two fell onto the bed. 

“The door-?” You pointed. 

“Locked,” Joe smirked as he laid on top of you. 

“Joe,” You met his eyes, “we can’t, not now, but later tonight maybe...” your hands wandered from his chest to his stomach, before beginning to tickle him. 

He rolled off of you and squirmed as you tickled him even more. Wrinkles around his eyes and laugh lines around his mouth gasped for air in between the laughs. He was about to laugh a little bit too loud so you quickly covered his mouth and ‘shhh’ed. 

The two of you froze but you shouldn’t have put your guard down because, in a swift motion, Joe was on top of you, his hands pinning your wrists down. You gasped but kept the volume down, “Joeseph Graham Sugg, let me go or else someone won’t get to sneak into my house at night,” you warned and gave him a smirk, you could even see the gears in his mind turning. 

He quickly rolled off you and you two just laid there on the bed, side by side. He interlaced his fingers into yours and you turned to face him, “I don’t wanna keep this a secret anymore. I don’t want to keep us a secret anymore.” Your eyes grazed over his lips and went to his sapphire eyes.  

“I know, (y/n), but I don’t know if the fandom will be open for us yet.” He also turned on his side and placed his other hand on your waist. 

“Yeah, I don’t know if the fans should know just yet but the boys deserve to know, I mean they knew that we had crushes on each other, and I think they deserve to know that we’ve been dating for a month now.” 

Joe smiled at the thought of not having to hide this relationship in front of them then nodded, “Yeah, let’s tell them tonight itself.” 

“Tonight?” 

“Yeah, the whole gangs here, let's.” 

You smiled and bit your lip before nodding, “I’m ok with that.” 

Everyone had pizza in their hands and stared at the camera with a deadpan expression, just so you could put in a clip of the break in the video, “That’s good!” You yelled and everyone became normal again. Pizzas were laid out in the center of the coffee table. 

Conor, Jack, Mikey, and Josh were sat in a circle around it. Joe, Caspar, You and Oli were sat on the sofa. 

After dinner, You and the boys got back into position and decided to start filming again. You & Joe glanced at each other, trying to contain smiles and went back to playing the game. Around the sixth question, you looked down to see Caspar stroking your leg which made everyone crack up but after that, the game continued well, even though there were about ten thousand tangent conversations and inside jokes during the whole filming. 

“Who’s winning, (y/n)?” Oli asked as he peered around Joe. 

You checked your count on the phone and looked up with a mix of surprise and shock, “It’s me, isn’t it?” Conor said while grinning at the camera even though he only got two points so far.  

“Ummm actually it’s tied between Caspar, Jack, and Joe.” 

“What?!” Conor yelled pretending to through a fit, “Lemmeseethat!” He rambled as he lunged for your phone but then pulled back, making everyone laugh, “No but seriously,” he went deadpan, “How is Jack up there?” 

“Yeah, how is he up there?” Josh asked in disbelief. 

“What does that mean, mate?” Jack asked with hints of annoyance.

“Alright, Alright, I just called it like it is, you guys still have four more questions to redeem yourselves-” 

“Mikey has a negative point?!” Joe interrupted as he gazed at your phone.  

“What?!” Mikey questioned as he stood up and took your phone to find that Joe was only messing. 

“Mikey, sit down, he was only joking,” you told as he nervously chuckled along with Joe before taking his place again. 

The next three questions flew by and Joe & Jack were still tied but Oli took Caspar’s place in the tie. 

Getting the group of boys to focus again after the previous round took a few moments but you were now ready for the last question. “Ok boys, this is the last one. It’s fairly easy too. Ready?” you asked as you looked around, “If I had a superpower, what would it be and why?” 

The boys took a few moments to discuss amongst themselves. Josh had just given up or he must’ve made up his answer already because he just sat there in silence. Joe was the next one to finish, so he picked up his phone and began scrolling through Insta. Soon all of the boys were ready for the answers so you pointed at Caspar to start them off. 

“I think you would have X-ray vision because you love being nosy.” 

You cracked a smile and glanced at the camera with a puzzling look. 

Following Caspar went Conor, then Joe, then Josh, and so on until everyone had given their answer, you awarded points to Oli and Jack, which meant they were tied. You didn’t know what to do, you wondered if they could ‘rock, paper, Scissors's it but your discussion with Joe came back to your mind and you decided to add a secret question which would be edited out of the video. 

“So do we both win, (Y/n)?” Oli asks with a toothy grin, glad that he won. 

“Actually, I’ve decided to add an extra question worth two points,” you bit your lip, glancing at Joe from the corner of your eyes, “It’s not gonna be in the video though, so umm... yeah lets get to it.” They were a bit confused but they complied when you told all of them to pull their phones out and have the notes app on so that they could show you the answer without any others hearing and agreeing. 

“Ok.. ready? Phones out?” The boys nodded and watched you, your heart beating faster than ever as you opened your mouth, “I’ve been keeping a secret for the past month, what is it?” 

The boys began typing quickly and finished in an instant. “Conor first.” He handed you the phone and mumbled something to Jack before erupting into laughter. You read his answer and closed your eyes before cracking a smile, “No, I am not ‘pregnent with an alien baby’, Conor.” 

The boys broke out in laughter as you shook your head and grabbed Josh’s phone. His answer wasn’t correct either, so you just moved onto Joe’s phone. He obviously knew the answer but he just wrote: ‘You’re cute AF and IDK how lucky I am to have such an amazing woman as my GF and best friend.’ You blushed like a strawberry but got him out of your thoughts and moved on while avoiding eye contact. Following him was Oli, then Caspar, so far none of them had guessed your relationship secret yet but you also knew the chances of guessing that was slim.

Next went Mikey followed lastly by Jack’s phone. He had a smirk on his face as he handed it to you. Mikey tried peering onto his screen but you grabbed it fast like a child. You looked down and read his answer and your eyes went wide, “Oh my god!” Joe glanced and gasped too, “How, Jack?!” you yelled out, he took that as a win and cheered. 

“I knew it!” 

“Wait, what?” Caspar asked as Jack continued cheering. 

Joe decided to tell the others, “(Y/n) and I-”

But Jack yelled out, “JOE AND (Y/N) ARE DATING!” 

What followed after that was just a blur for you. They were all happy for you two obviously but it was overwhelming answering so many questions, at least the guilt weighing you down was gone and you felt open to being yourself around the boys again. 

After lots of explaining and well-wishing, everyone had settled down to film the outro. “So who won the game, (Y/n)?” Conor asked as you all acted normal for the camera. 

“Well... after a very intense round of ‘rock, paper, scissor’s,” you lied, “...Jack Maynard is the winner!” You hung your head in fake sadness as he stood up and cheered. Later, after he settled down, you finished the outro and the boys began filtering out of your home. 

Caspar and Josh left first, they had a meeting the next day and it was pretty late. Next was Mikey, then Oli. 

You were laying on the sofa with your head on Joe’s lap as you two chatted with Conor and Jack. “Ugh go back to being a secret if you’re gonna be so cute,” Conor said with fake disgust written across his face 

“Hey, what’s done is done, mate.” Joe leaned down and kissed you before tickling your side a little. 

You were gonna respond to Conor but a thought came back to you. “Wait, Jack, how’d you know me and Joe are dating?” You sat up and snuggled into Joe’s side. 

“Oh,” he chuckled, “I was editing Sunday’s vlog when I noticed Joe give you a cheeky kiss on the lips, in the background of one of the clips.” 

You scoffed, “Joe!” You playfully slapped his arm, “I told you not to be so obvious-” 

“Sorry, sorry-” 

“Now that Jack’s won, who knows what he’s gonna make me do-” 

“You got yourself into that, (Y/n)” Conor told making you chuckle. 

“Even though I did know you two were dating, I made it till the end of the game without that affecting my points, I still would’ve won cause I know you the best.” Jack shrugged, “I was just trying to get Joe jealous and admit your relationship himself but that never happened.” 

The realization dawned on you, “Ohhh, that’s why you were flirting so much with me-” 

“Yeah who in the right mind would flirt with you, (Y/n),” Jack joked while gagging. You turned to Joe with a sad puppy face but ended up laughing. 

“Jack, you’re true gentlemen,” Conor said sarcastically as he stood up to leave too. 

“You betcha,” Jack said with a cheesy American accent as he stood up too.

1~When did you first get into Kpop?And what was the first MV / Song that got you hooked? Wellllllll I first started listening to BTS in October 2015 probs but I didn’t branch out to more groups until March 2016 ish. But the first MV that got me hooked was Dope on the Fine Bros react channel lol

2~Who are your Bias Wreckers for the groups that you love? AHAHAHHAHA (this is gonna be so long dear lord) okay soooo my bias groups are svt and nct and honestly?? I love them all a ridiculous amount! so in svt I am stupidly loyal to wonwoo bc I am a messssss and i go through phases of loving each of them more~ I never rlly feel threatened that wonu will be debunked as my ult but probably the one who rlly gets me goin the most is hosh:) for nct I used to bias mark then yuta lol but i think the dreamies are my true bias group who even is jung jaehyun tbh so yeah donghyuck is everything to me. for other groups ! ummm in bts I love them all a lottttt a lot too but I think lately jin and jungkook have mostly been wrecking me? I’m p loyal to monnie tho! okay for astro it’s 10/10 jinjin at the moment but sanha and mj snatch me often enough too for sure~ in twice mina has been ruining my life but what’s new tbh. jae for day6 destroys me way too often someone collect him. in shinee it’s probably key! just bc I really like his sense of humor and I relate to him haaa. honestlyyyy in all girl groups i am high key disloyal and swerving all over the place oops. anddd sehun is legit my ult bias wrecker like at this point he might as well be my bias baekhyunnie is dead to me

11~How do the people in your life react when you tell them that you listen to kpop?Are they supportive or just against it? lol soooo idk I don’t necessarily bring it up these days ? just bc I’m in college now so idk I only bring it up casually I guess… BUTTTTTT when I first told my friends I was so nervous and they judged me so hard and a lot of them still judge me but they now know it’s part of who I am and they kinda accept that! I actually was the first person I knew to get into kpop so I dragged a lot of my friends irl into it too! (shoutout to @aegyovendingmachine @everyonesabiaswrecker @taeismyking @honestlay ) and i’ve made so many friends through it online and in real life! (shoutout to @atshinee i know it wasn’t why we became friends but it definitely helped make us close!)

I just started interviewing influencers in March, and since then I've sat down with Kate Hudson, Pharrell Williams, Demi Lovato, Jake Paul, Shane Dawson, Fuck Jerry and even interviewed The Bella Twins on their reality TV show.

The question that I get asked the most is, "How do you connect with these people? I want to work with them too!"

Here are my tips for how to reach out to and connect with influencers.

Start a relationship.

Follow them on social. Read their blogs. Watch their YouTube channels. See what they're up to. Start commenting on their posts or send them an email.

I read a book by Dorie Clark, Reinventing You, that really inspired me. I sent her an email and over time we began a correspondence. She's now one of the people I reach out to when I need career advice.

If you're reaching out to influencers on social media, Twitter is the best channel because of the sheer amount of times they post on there, compared to other platforms. It gives you more chances to interact with them. I've never actually gotten a response from an influencer on the other social media channels, so I don't even bother with them anymore.

Follow the people you're interested in knowing on Twitter and start commenting on, or retweeting, their posts. The goal is to get them to follow you, so you can send them direct messages. It doesn't happen overnight, so give it time.

Help them.

Why would an influencer want to connect with you? What's in it for them?

I wanted to interview Kate Hudson for a long time, because I was interested in hearing how she grew her company, Fabletics, so quickly. But, why would she want to sit down with me? I had to wait for the right opportunity to approach her.

When she launched a new apparel line with Demi Lovato, I figured she'd want some press in a major business publication, so I reached out. I had something that would benefit her, so she agreed to do the interview.

Use your network.

Unless you have kids under the age of 14, you probably don't know who Jake Paul is, but he's one of the biggest YouTubers on the planet. Last summer, he was involved in a ton of controversy, so everyone wanted an interview with him.

I investigated my network to find any connection I had to him. It turned out that he has the same publicist as Kate Hudson, whom I already interviewed. So, I reached out to his PR guy and I got me the interview.

If you haven't had any luck reaching out on social or via email, look through your network. Maybe you don't have a direct connection to the influencer, but you might know someone in his or her circle. Leverage whatever relationships you have.

Prove that you belong at the party.

You can't just start out hanging with the top influencers. I didn't get to meet Pharrell Williams without proving myself first.

The first interview that I did was with a medium-sized YouTuber. The interview went great and her manager set up another interview with a bigger client of hers. That influencer put me in touch with her friend, and so on.

The more social proof that shows that you've connected with influencers in the past, the easier it will be to connect with more in the future. Also, make sure your social media profiles are professional and up to date. Look the part. Fake it till you make it.

Be specific about what you want.

I see people getting this wrong on Twitter every day:

.@Influencer please follow me. Hmu. Shoot me your email address. I'd love to connect.

Why would someone respond to that? The same thing happens in person. A thought leader will speak at an event and people patiently wait to chat with him or her after. But, when they finally get their chance, they have nothing to say.

Be specific. Only ask for one thing. "I'd love to grab coffee because I've studied your career and it's been a huge inspiration to me. I'd love some pointers on how to grow mine."

Be cool.

If you do get the pleasure of connecting with an influencer, respect the relationship. I can't stress that enough! Go look at my Twitter followers. Lots of big names in there, right? I don't message these people unless it's absolutely necessary.

A ton of influencers have given me their cell phone numbers, which I guard with my life. Word travels fast, and if you abuse the relationship with crazy requests or excessive messages, people will find out.

Be patient.

You didn't get married after your first date, did you? Don't expect to become best friends with your favorite influencer after sending a tweet.

Remember that influencers are people too. Some are going to be really cool, some are going to be jerks, but most will be in the middle somewhere.

And never forget that you have a lot more to gain in a relationship with an influencer than they do. So respect their time. Good luck!
