In the Woods Somewhere
Shapeshifter!Natalie x Untrusting!Reader
fuckkkkkk i love this concept hell yesss anon >:3
!!tw for mentions of blood!!
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
★Natalie Scatorccio had to be one of the prettiest girls you had ever seen.
★That wasn't an exaggeration to be nice or anything. There was genuinely no one like her. You were crazy stoked when you managed to score a date with her. Well to be fair you hadn't scored anything- she was the one that asked you. Which was even more baffling in your mind: Natalie Scatorccio asked you on a date?? You felt like she was wayyy out of your league, and yet here you were, walking her home after one of the best nights you'd ever had, actively planning a second date.
★Needless to say, you were absolutely star-struck. You had no idea she was into you like that, although you supposed there were signs. She had a tendency to get a bit flirty at parties, but you assumed it was because you were both pretty tipsy half of the time. You felt like a huge dick for making at assumption, but that didn't matter now.
★You had never officially stated that you two were a thing, but that was alright. It was still relatively early in your relationship, and you figured it would come in due time. So long as you took things slow- you didn't want to make a mistake by moving too fast.
★The one thing you didn't enjoy about Natalie was the fact that she sucked at communicating. You really just wanted to know if she'd be making an appearance at Jeff's party that night as you sure as hell weren't going if she wouldn't be there either.
★"Ah, I dunno... I wanna see how I'm feeling first."
★"Will you let me know later?"
★"Yeah, of course."
★Despite her promise, she did not, in fact, let you know later. Shocker.
★You decided you'd roll up anyways, mingle with the crowd and bounce if she didn't make an appearance. Which is what brought you to now; when she inevitably didn't show up you spent some time chatting with friends before disappearing.
★You kicked a small rock as you walked, chewing on the lip of your red solo cup. Even though it was a bit of a long walk home, you didn't mind- you found it quite nice actually. It was along a shortcut through the woods Natalie had shown you. While you could've waited for one of your friends to be ready to leave to ask for a ride, the walk was especially relaxing at night with the way the moonlight sliced through the trees. So you enjoyed the beauty of the forest, chewing on your cup while kicking a small rock.
★Until you heard a branch snap somewhere far off in the woods.
★You froze immediately, looking for the source of the noise. It was a fox, trotting along the path some ways behind you. It didn't seem to have seen you, so you backed behind a tree so it wouldn't notice you as it passed. It held something in it's mouth that you couldn't quite make out until it got closer- a rabbit, clearly dead, it's blood painting the fur on the fox's snout crimson. Eventually it got close enough to pass by you. You did your best to shrink into your shadow and hold your breath as it approached your tree, waiting for it to pass. But it never did.
★Instead a familiar blonde appeared at the other side of the tree.
★"Natalie?"
★She spun around, wide eyed with fear, and you saw she held a dead rabbit in her hands. Her mouth and jaw were smeared with the same crimson paint that leaked out of the rabbit's neck
★It took all of your strength not to scream. You searched her face for an answer that never came, her expression just as terrified as yours.
★ Eventually, she pointed at the cup in your hands, "You're drunk-"
★"This-" You poured the contents onto the dirt to make a point, "-Is a carpisun."
★"Shit- I- OK," She stammered, dropping the rabbit. With one hand she wiped the blood away from her mouth, and with the other she reached out to you- although you took a large step back, reeling away from her touch, "Wait I can explain,"
★"Fucking can you? Your immediate reaction to me finding out what you really are was to start manipulating me!"
★She sucked in a breath, "Ok yeah that does make this look a lot worse-"
★"No shit Natalie!"
★"Ok I just," she paused, blanking on what to say, "It's still me, I'm still the same person I was five minutes ago-"
★"Five minutes ago you were a fucking fox."
★"Five minutes ago you didn't know that!" She made a face, sensing that was the wrong thing to say, "Wait I didn't mean it like that- what I meant is I'm still whoever you thought I was before you found out-"
★"How do I know this is really you and not someone's face that you stole?"
★"Wow," she scoffed, "That is a harsh assumption-"
★"Then prove me wrong!"
★She stammered, searching for the right thing to say, "Babe, it's really not that simple-"
★"Exactly!"
★You pinched the bridge of your nose, "Natalie you've been lying about who you are for however the hell long we've known each other-"
★"-I haven't been lying," She interjected, "The topic never came up-"
★"You haven't been telling the truth either!" You snapped back, "How the hell was I supposed to know to ask whether or not you were a fucking fox!?"
★"You're not dating a fox babe,"
★"I'm not dating you period!" Natalie flinched at your words as if you physically hit her. She stepped back and broke eye contact but you could've sworn you saw tears bubbling in the corners of her eyes. "Please Nat I just... need some space right now. Just let me think for a bit."
★"Will you let me know? Later?"
★"I... sure I'll try..."

ok all the people saying that they felt like the alien arc ruined the flow of the ending is kind of fascinating because to me to always felt like kind of the perfect set up for the confession arc?
like on top of being lighthearted and low stakes compared to the arcs surrounding it (can you really imagine the emotional turmoil of going right from the broccoli arc to the confession arc???) the character arcs that takenaka and tome go through directly mirror what mob has been going through.
takenaka realizing his powers arent a burden and can be useful is a realization that mob has already come to and tome realizing that SHES not a burden and her friends like and support her for who she is and shes allowed to have her own wants and needs is the journey that mob is just about to make
also them actually meeting aliens is kind of important for a less obvious reason but one you come to after rereading/rewatching this series waaaaaay too many times
every main character gets what ive been referring to in my head as a “want vs need” arc: teru with his introduction, ritsu with the big cleanup arc, reigen with the separation arc, dimple with the broccoli arc, tome with the alien arc, shigeo with the confession arc. all of these arcs, to some extent, take a character and give them what they THINK they want to see what they really want.
teru’s is a bit of a deviation because he has what he thinks he wants from the beginning: popularity, people respecting and fearing him. but through his breakdown you see what he really wants, what he really needs is self confidence. and then every arc follows that same sort of pattern: ritsu wants powers, but he really wants his relationship with his brother to go back to how it was. reigen wants to be someone (popular, famous), but what he really wants is to be something to someone. dimple wants to be a god, but what he really wants is to be acknowledged.
and then we get to tome. tome wants to meet aliens so damn bad. she thinks that all of her time with the telepathy club has been wasted, that they dont really care about her or her interests and have just been using her to laze around and goof off and shes running out of time to get what she wants. when her friends invite her to summon aliens with her, she thinks that theyre messing with her, or shes tricked them into going along with her delusions, or theyre doing this out of pity, or anything to convince herself that what she wants isnt important and she should just give up and go back to not acting on her wants for the sake of everyone elses comfort.
and learning takenaka is actually a telepath through him reading her mind dispels some of that, sure, and if they hadnt met aliens it wouldnt have been a waste of time because it was something they all did together which is what counts. but them actually meeting aliens and going on a ufo and then doing the exact same thing theyve always done together, laze around and eat snacks and play games, was what she needed to realize that none of their time was wasted. she wanted to meet aliens, and like every other characters arc before her she got that, and through getting it she realized what she really wanted was to spend time with her friends before she graduated and didnt get to see them as much.

Forgive me if I'm a bit nervous about Gorgug this season. It's just that the last Zac Oyama pc was Colin Provolone, who was arguably one of his greatest D20 performances, if not the greatest.
Zac always does great with every pc he plays, but Colin was something else. He came out swinging with actions and words that were teeming with unspoken emotional baggage. The way Colin's presence affected the other pcs; there was this level of depth that I don't think I've seen in any of his other characters. It was understated and quiet in that signature "just a guy" way that he tends to be, while still captivating everyone instantly with just how raw it was.
Not to say we haven't seen emotional depth in Gorgug. It's just that, compared to the other Bad Kids, Gorgug's journey and progression as a character has been very... impersonal? Like, yes, he found his birth parents, and he found friends who appreciate him, and he faced his insecurities about his intelligence, and he navigated relationship troubles, and his trial through the claustrophobic bug-tunnels was a horrifically-uncanny parallel to how he's spent his entire life trying to make himself as small as possible.
But how much of that has actually changed him from the Gorgug we started with? I would agree that he's definitely happier with his life, given all the loving and supportive people that have been added to it when it used to be just him and his parents. And he's certainly grown into himself and become more self-assured in his abilities, even if he's still, and always will be, our anxious little guy. And there's nothing wrong with that. I've always liked how Gorgug was a representation of all the little things. The subtle acts and kindnesses that don't seem like much to most, but to some are everything.
We don't need another Bad Kid living in fear that their mouth could be shit-in at any moment. We've already got one-too-many.
All that being said, I just feel like Gorgug's personal story beats are much easier to sweep under the rug than everyone else's. He has the same soft and understated quality that Colin held, but they lack that extra oomph that pushed Colin over the edge from being just another guy in a series of dudes, to a character that the vast majority of us could not get out of our heads. He took someone who was anxious and softspoken, who ultimately never wanted to be violent— someone who is remarkably similar to Gorgug in many ways— and maintained that demeanor and core in Colin's character while still hitting us in the feels with character development at max velocity at every turn.
I think Zac gets better and better at this with every season that goes by. With each new character, there is always something that leaves me stunned in awe. And it's been, what, three? Four years since we last saw Gorgug?
I'm just,,, I'm cautiously optimistic but also going into a bit of a worry about what violence this man may inflict upon us
