| So much for my nine lives |
⁂
Pairing: David Barrón Corona & Benjamín Arellano Félix (Midnight Mass Vampire-ish AU)
For @narcosfandomdiscord NarcOctober - Day 30 - Day of Amnesty (originally Day 29 - Day of Horror)
Prompt: Came back wrong
Word count: ≈ 1.2K
TWs: Canon-consistent & vampire-related(?) violence
This was the part in the all movies where the person in my position comes to the horrible realization at what he is and what he has to do. So this is like … kinda Barrón and Mín in the universe of Midnight Mass or really like the vampire lore of Midnight Mass applied Narcos Mexico? Anyway, this is just a fun spooky, lil ditty I did. Enjoy Mín finally giving Barrón everything he ever wanted. Spoiler alert: it’s not the eternal life that matters.
⁂
Shocked awake, I sat forward sucking in deep, sweeping gusts of air that crackled through my chest, inflating my collapsed lungs. Like they were two dusty, burlap sacks, the air dragged in and out so sharply and painfully I began to cough. My shirt was caked with dust and dried blood that looked almost purple in the orange menace of the pre-dusk sun. I looked down and at the trail my body had made. Must’ve been when they dragged me into the cave.
But I was dead. Dead just then and I knew it. Now I wasn’t though. I came back somehow. Only, I came back wrong.
I remembered little before I died but the commotion at the cafe. Panicked crowd, a few rounds ejected from my gun, as I grabbed Benjamín by the collar of his jacket, screaming, “we gotta go!” and ran toward safety.
Safety. A funny word to describe Ramón and Kitty, two flashily dressed gangsters, semi autos in hand, beckoning to us from the corner where the street met the back alley road, the curb of which the Escalade was parked on. We’d been so close. I’d shoved Mín in front of me and turned around to return fire at the crowd of fatigues surrounding the armored truck across the street, just before I felt the bullet enter my chest. Then another just under my ribs.
The thing no one ever tells you about getting shot? When a projectile traveling at 1700 miles per hour enters the human body, what you feel first is the shock wave. It juggernauts through you, traversing through muscles, tissue, your very cells, so fast and forcefully, the feeling’s more akin to electrocution. It was a miracle my heart was still beating as the ground came up at me, fast, before I sank into the black.
So much for my nine lives.
Shielding my eyes from the stray beams of sun that peeked through the cracks of the cave entrance, I took a lighter from my pocket and lit it turning to face the dark side of the cave and get a better look at who or what might be inside.
Which one of them would’ve done it? Definitely not Ramón. Not enough self-control. I would’ve been an unintended afternoon snack. Hope would suggest Pancho or Dina, but common sense would suggest otherwise. The only one among them who had been at the cafe with the strength and self-restraint to do it without killing me more dead than I already was could only be Benjamín.
And yet, it was hard to imagine him, sour, overly-critical, Motherest-of-Mother-Hens, Mín valuing me enough to offer up eternity, even if he did owe me his life, what with everything I did for them that night at Christine’s. I rolled my eyes. And that was without an immortal advantage.
With a sly undertone of acknowledgment, almost an echo with my disbelief, Mín’s voice rang out from the shadows that clung to the cave walls. “Tus ojos. Se brillan como se supone que deben hacerlo.”
The eyeshine of a cat. How unsettling it had been the first time I’d caught it in Dina’s eyes. Mistook them for headlights in the lamplight of the warehouse parking lot when we were chatting shit some late night, after they’d finished the count. I’d read somewhere, probably in one of the hundreds of books I devoured, trying to fend off brain rot and existential dread in a cell at Donovan, that it was called tapetum lucidum. An extra shiny layer in the eyes of cats and other nocturnal animals that helped them see in the dark.
“What happened?”
“Your ability to maintain your composure under the strangest, most precarious of circumstances never ceases to amaze us.”
It wasn’t altogether clear if Mín was speaking for the family or if there was actually someone else there with us, the place was so dark. But as soon as I opened my mouth to ask, I was doubled over, a jagged pain drilling relentlessly into my gut, tunneling through my chest, all the way up my esophagus and into my throat. My face was close enough to the ground, the breath I expelled violently kicked dust back up into my face. The flame from the lighter snuffed out when it hit the ground next to me.
“Yeah, you’re going to need to remedy that.”
I let out a grim, stuttering chuckle that could’ve been mistaken for the growl of an animal who just felt the hinges give way, the bar of a trap finally slamming down on its neck.
This was the part in the all movies where the person in my position comes to the horrible realization at what he is and what he has to do. The part where they’re supposed to freak out, panic, clam up at the idea of killing as a way of life. But the sick thing? This wasn’t a movie and I felt not an ounce of guilt or fear at the prospect. I’d been taking human life to live for decades now. No sense in an apex predator apologizing for assuming the nature of its design. Shit, it’s not like I made the rules.
A faint skittering sound along the edge of the walls jackhammered my eardrums and before coherent thought could be formed, the soft warmth of light and heaven itself burst into my mouth, soothing the ragged itch at the back of my throat. Blood from some poor, unfortunate little rodent that had made a home in the cool of the cave leaked all over my hands, as I drew from it; hose from a hydrant.
Benjamín stepped off the wall, where he’d been standing for who knows how long and circled me slowly, waiting for me to finish. When the critter’s body finally hit the ground, he clapped a few times, observing, “Pues eso fue fácil, verdad?”
Sighing wearily, “sí, fue tan fácil,” I wiped the blood from my chin with the back of my hand.
Closing the loop, Mín approached me where I sat, still kneeling on the ground over the critter’s carcass, and picked up the lighter. He flicked it open. Light materialized next to his face, the flame illuminating his eyes, activating that telltale glow of Other. That glow which I now apparently shared with him and the rest of the Arellano siblings.
Eyes boring into his, I addressed him direct, “Why exactly am I here, Benjamín,” landing on his first name pointedly. A name I rarely used out of fear, or maybe respect, or maybe just the desire to avoid whatever grief he might be prepared to dish out to me. What was the point now? As far as I was concerned, there was none. Not when we had forever to fight. But Mín didn’t look like he was fixin’ to fight right now.
“I brought you back.”
Annoying. Not really an answer and my face said just as much.
“I brought you back because we cannot afford to lose an asset such as yourself.” Mín continued, gazing into the fire like he was some kind of ancient sorcerer, divining an answer from it, “Por muchas razones y en muchas ocasiones,” then flicked the lighter closed, “ya has demostrado lo que vales demasiado que te perdamos ahorita. And with our enemies outnumbering us, we need more than just soldiers.”
I blinked back at him slowly, almost lazy but with evident curiosity because I had no idea what the fuck he meant and I was starting to get tired and that burning in my throat was kicking up again.
He stood up, dusted off his pants, and walked toward the entrance of the cave, voice bouncing off the stony walls and getting smaller and smaller the further away he got.
“Y’know if I learned anything from my uncle’s hubris, it’s that when your back’s against the wall, the only loyalty guaranteed is that of family. And since I brought you back, the blood in your veins is blood we share.”
Just when he reached the threshold, sky outside now darkened red by the last of the sunset, Mín turned around holding out the lighter in his hand. Extended, as if to summon me. “That is what you are now, Barrón. Family.”

Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr. always thought he’d have the stereotypical ‘all American, apple pie life’. You know the one: a spouse, maybe a pet, a cozy house, and a couple kids. At this point in Sonny’s life, he was beginning to question if it was in the cards for him, if it was meant to be.
All that questioning and uncertainty went out the window when he met you. He knew he’d marry you one day — as cliché as it sounds. You occupied his thoughts every minute of everyday since. He tried his hardest to stay focused at work, being a detective with Manhattan’s Special Victims Unit he had to stay focused, he had a very important job to do. He also tried his hardest to stay focused on his schoolwork, going to Fordham Law school was hard work as it was, but balancing law school on top of working at SVU was even harder. The man barely got enough sleep and missed out on a lot. He was alway afraid he’d miss out on love, but luckily, you crossed Sonny’s path one fateful morning.
It was early, 6:30 to be exact, when you placed your order at the café a few blocks from your apartment. You ordered what has came to be your favorite breakfast since discovering this little café on your walk to work one morning. It’s what you called a ‘hidden gem’ and recommended it to anyone that wanted somewhere cozy with a great atmosphere and even better food.
Once you had collected your order from the counter, you turned to make your way to the door when someone literally almost knocked you down. Thankfully, arms caught you before you could fall and spill your breakfast. “Oh my gosh! I am so sorry. Are you alright?” A concerned and equally panicked male voice asked, helping you steady yourself.
“I didn’t fall on my face and my breakfast is still in tact, so yes, I’m fine.” You attempt to make light of the situation. Looking up to see the man that ran into you but saved you from embarrassment, you all but freeze, taking in the handsome man’s features. He’s tall, slim build with darkish brown hair that has hints of grey throughout and gorgeous baby blue eyes. You were so taken aback by his angelic good looks that you didn’t realize the stranger had gone quiet as well, taking in your beautiful features in return.
The café began getting more crowded the longer the two of you stood there gawking at one another. A younger woman broke the apparent trance between you and this man — whose name you still didn’t know — when she needed to pass by to reach a vacant table.
The two of you stepped out of the crowded café making small talk as you did so. You found out his name is Dominick Carisi Jr., but he goes by the name Sonny. You gave him your name in return, smiling as he rambled about making it up to you somehow for almost ruining your morning. “Would you maybe want to meet back here a six this afternoon? I know a great restaurant on this street.” You offered.
“I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it with my job, but I’ll try my hardest.” Sonny informed. “I’m a detective with the Special Victims Unit so my schedule can be hectic and cases can take a while.”
“Oh I see. Well, how about I give you my number, and you can tell me if you can make it or not. We can reschedule if you’re still interested.” You suggested. You didn’t think about him being a detective, but you had a gut feeling that he was of some importance by the suit he had on. You quickly scribble your phone number on a sticky note you kept in your purse and hand it to Sonny when you were finished.
Sonny checks the time on his watch and you notice his eyes go wide. “Oh shit, I’m gonna be late if I don’t go right now. I’ll text you later about this afternoon.”
You nod, unable to fight the smile making its way to your lips. “Of course! You better hurry, don’t wanna be late! I’d feel horrible.” You ushered Sonny in the direction of the precinct. You hear Sonny laughing as you do so.
The two of you go your separate ways. You think about Sonny the reminder of the day and hope he stays safe now that you know his occupation.
Fast forward four years later and you and Sonny have been going strong. Sure, there’s been ups and downs like with all relationships, but Sonny never lets an argument go unresolved. Despite having a busy and demanding job, Sonny always makes time for you, wining and dining you, warm bubble baths with your favorite candles and flowers, you name it.
Sonny was so nervous when the big night finally came. He wanted everything to be perfect, asking Olivia and Amanda for help. The ladies didn’t really do much but point Sonny in the right direction.
He planned for quiet night in with you. He cooked a delicious Italian meal for two, wine and candles on the table. He timed dinner just right as you entered his apartment, stopping in your tracks as you smelt the food, your favorite Italian food to be exact.
“Oh my…” you trailed off, taking in the scene before you. Sonny setting the table, wine glasses and candles inviting you to take a seat, and you just now noticed soft music in the background.
“Come sit. Dinner’s ready!” Sonny beamed, gesturing to the table and all the food. You grin, still speechless but take your seat regardless. You didn’t recall any special occasion for this, but then again, Sonny was always surprising you with sweet and romantic gestures.
Once Sonny’s joined you at the table, you both fill your plates with the picture perfect food in front of yours. You knew Sonny was an amazing cook thanks to Mama Carisi and Sonny’s interest in helping her when he was younger. You took turns filling the other in on your day and enjoying the peaceful dinner.
After dinner, Sonny clears the empty dishes and returns to his seat, a gift in hand. “Close your eyes for second, doll.” He tells you. You give him a questioning look but do as told, he’s never steered you wrong before. With your eyes closed, you hear rustling next to you and you want to sneak a peak so badly, but you think better of it. “Alright, open those gorgeous eyes.” You hear Sonny, smile evident in his voice. Slowly opening your eyes, you look around, looking for anything different on the table but nothing. You feel Sonny’s hand gently rest against your cheek farthest from him and turn your head in his direction. You gasp seeing a sparkling piece of jewelry in his hand. Looking up at him in shock, you see Sonny smiling ear to ear, happiness radiating off of him.
You open your mouth to speak but no words come out. Your heart is racing and hands trembling, you can only imagine how Sonny feels. Is this really happening? Is this a dream? If it’s a dream, you don’t want to wake up. You’ve been daydreaming about this day for years. That day you met Sonny you felt a connection and after a few dates, you knew he was the one.
“Doll, these past four years have been the best years of my life and I want to keep that going. I want you by my side for the rest of our lives. You have no idea how happy, loved, cared for, and important you make me feel. I’ll never forget that day we met at that coffee shop, just like I’ll never forget everything in between. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in this hectic schedule I have. You’re always so understanding when I have to cancel or be hours late. I love when you swing by to bring me lunch on particular busy days, how well you get along with my work family and my real family too. You’re the sweetest, most thoughtful, and funniest person I’ve ever met, and that’s saying something, I mean have you met me?” Sonny teased, both of you laughing through the sweet tears that managed to fall. “Doll, will you do me the honor and marry me? I can’t imagine life without you. I love you more than words can describe.”
You were still speechless, tears still slipping from your eyes. All you could do was nod your head repeatedly. You watched Sonny slide the ring on your finger, wearing a smile so big your cheeks hurt. “I love you, handsome. I promise to be the best wife I can be.” You finally regained your voice enough to speak.
Sonny gently pulled you into a sweet, loving, and passionate kiss to which you reciprocated with your whole heart.
One year after the proposal, it was finally the day of the wedding — yours and Sonny’s dream wedding. You made sure that he gave his input and helped make decisions, it was his big day too, after all.
You were beyond nervous, not because you changed your mind but because you were terrified that you’d trip and fall or some other embarrassing thing would happen.
Olivia and Amanda were quick to reassure you it would all be fine and that, even if something crazy did happen, Sonny would never leave you on your wedding day — or any day for that matter. They both reminded you that you and Sonny were meant to be.
Thirty minutes later, you’re walking down the aisle towards Sonny, the love of your life. The moment Sonny sees you, he’s in tears, you took his breath away in that dress and he couldn’t believe this was reality and not some dream he’s had since you accepted his proposal. You had tears in your eyes as well for many of the same reasons, Sonny looked like the most handsome prince you’ve ever seen and this was really happening.
Once the wedding was over, the reception began. You and Sonny made rounds visiting your guests and thanking them for being a part of your special day. As the reception went on and heartfelt speeches were made, you and Sonny realized just how loved the two of your were. The remainder of the evening was spent laughing, eating, and dancing off into the night.
Two years after your wedding, you find out some big, life changing news — you’re pregnant. You and Sonny wanted to wait until you settled into the married life and your respective jobs became less hectic, granted Sonny’s job didn’t always stay less hectic but there were moments when it did.
It wasn’t until recently, the past three months or so, you and Sonny talked about kids, and finally decided you’d start trying. The two of you hadn’t had any luck unfortunately, until now. You stood in the bathroom of your home, jaw dropped as tears welled up in your eyes. You were in shock. Was this real or a dream? Is this test really true? You took one more test to be sure. Positive. You had to find a cute way to tell Sonny. You went to the Pinterest for inspiration, and low and behold, you found the perfect idea. You quickly found a website to customize the cutest onesie to say: ‘Surprise! Your going to be a daddy!’ as well as Sonny a shirt that says: ‘My jokes are officially dad jokes’. You laughed when you read that one and knew Sonny would love it. While you waited for the shirt and onesie to arrive, you casually bought a few small things to add to Sonny’s little announcement box. You bought a blank card and wrote him a little heartfelt note. You wrote about how much you love him and can’t wait to embark on this journey with him amongst other sweet words. You didn’t realize you were getting so emotional until you felt a tear slid down your cheek. You wiped it away and finished the note saying: ‘The only thing better than having you as my husband is our child having you as their dad. I love you — no — we love you!’.
Later on that evening, Sonny was finally on his way home, calling to see if he needed to pick up anything for dinner. You told him no and that you had it covered adding that he better hurry home for a surprise. Sonny laughed and said he’d be there shortly and that he loved you.
You quickly got everything set up and put the finishing touches on dinner, chicken spaghetti and breadsticks you picked up from the local bakery you and Sonny love so much. The table was set just as Sonny walked through the door. “Perfect timing, babe!” You giggle, grabbing glasses for drinks. Sonny set his things down by the door, giving you a quick peck on the cheek as he passes by you to wash his hands before joining you at the table.
Dinner was pleasant and conversation flowed freely, despite you being excited and a little nervous. You tried to keep your emotions at bay, but naturally Sonny noticed your demeanor. “Everything okay, doll?”
You look up from your plate and nod with a smile. “Couldn’t be better.” You grin, a gleam in your eyes. “When you’re done, you can have your surprise.”
Sonny was curious as to this surprise you had for him and slightly panicked too. It wasn’t his birthday or your anniversary. It wasn’t a holiday either so he was worried he forgot something important. He knew by the look you were giving him that you weren’t mad rather excited so that eased his thoughts. “Alright. I’m ready for this surprise. The suspense is killing me here!” He happily exclaimed.
You laughed and set the beautifully wrapped box on the table. Sonny carefully unwrapped the gift and opened the box. You watched as Sonny picked up the first item, the the dad jokes shirts. You watched him read the message and then look at you confused. You gestured for him to keep looking in the box. He did and pulled out the customized onesie. You could help but smile wide as Sonny read the message on it and jump up from his chair, tears in his eyes and a smile as wide as yours. “Are you — Doll, please tell me this ain’t a joke.” You got up and grabbed the handwritten card and told him to read it, tears in your eyes as well from watching the love of your life putting the pieces together and grasping that this was real. Sonny read the card, he was full on crying by the time he finished. He wrapped you up in a tight hug, lifting you slightly off the ground. The two of you were crying happy tears, after trying the past three months and not having any luck, the positive result was overwhelming for you both. “I love you and I love you too baby Carisi.” Sonny placed a soft kiss to your lips before placing a soft kiss to your stomach.
The rest of the evening was spent talking about the little one, anything from names to nursery decor to debating if the baby would be a boy or a girl. You said girl and Sonny said boy.
The whole pregnancy Sonny was right there with you and if he couldn’t be there he had his mom be with you. He refused to let you be alone despite you telling him it would all be okay. He was just worried about something happening or going wrong and no one being there to help you or take care of you and the baby. He saw enough horrific things at work, he didn’t need anything bad happening at home.
You got used to Sonny or Mama Carisi being there. As it turned out, you liked having the company and realized that Sonny had good intentions and just wanted to keep you and your unborn baby safe.
Finally, time came to find out the gender of baby Carisi. You were on the fence about doing the whole gender reveal thing and so was Sonny, but with some persuasion from Amanda and Liv, you decided to do a small one — just you, Sonny, his squad from work, and both your families and few close friends. Since Liv and Amanda persuaded you into this you put them in charge for the party.
As people arrived, you and Sonny went around videoing everyone give their guesses on baby Carisi’s gender. Majority of the guests agreed with you and said girl, saying that Sonny was meant to be a girl dad, especially since he grew up with all sisters. Sonny responded by shaking his head, laughing and replying with, “That’s the reason we’re having a boy!”, with a big smile on his face.
Liv and Amanda opted to have the reveal be done by a simple popping a balloon and having the blue or pink confetti fall out. The women decided to keep it simple since you and Sonny were not the extravagant, over the top type of people. You were happy with how the party all turned out, the girls really out did themselves. The two women rounded you and Sonny up to pop the balloon. Your guests crowded around, phones in hand ready to record the moment.
Sonny held the balloon and you got ready to pop it with the pin. The countdown began and when everybody reached one, you popped the balloon and everyone watched as pink confetti floated all around. You and your fellow team girl members cheered while Sonny and his team boy members jokingly booed. You threw your arms around Sonny, overjoyed with the news. When you broke the hug, you looked Sonny in the eyes and said, “See! You are meant to be a girl dad!”
The day you went into labor was what you called ‘calm chaos’ because while you were fairly calm, Sonny was stressed and panicking hence the chaos half of your made up term. Finally at the hospital, you and Sonny were taken to the labor and delivery wing where you were waiting to be fully dilated to begin delivery.
Sonny was by your side, holding your hand and reassuring you that it would all be okay. You were grateful to have Sonny in general but especially in this moment, you would have been freaking out without him. Sonny’s presence always made you feel calm, safe, and loved.
A couple hours later you were ready to push. Throughout the delivery, you all but broke Sonny’s hand and he took it like a champ, he had to grit his teeth and bite his tongue but he did it. Both your pain was thankfully short lived after delivery began. Baby Carisi made her arrival and you and Sonny were beaming with tear filled eyes. When you held her, you couldn’t hold back the tears and neither could Sonny. You were exhausted and Sonny noticed carefully taking her from your arms. “Rest, doll. I got her.” That’s all you needed to hear from Sonny before falling asleep, happy with your adorable little family.
Fast forward to present day, Sonny was playing tea party with his baby girl, the light of his life aside from you. You watched from the door way as your thee year old poured Sonny some more tea as her told her all about his favorite animal. You smiled and snapped a quick picture of the two before slipping away to make some lunch for the three of you.
Ever since the day the little princess arrived, her and Sonny were thick as thieves, always together the second Sonny walked through the door. More often than not you caught them passed out on the couch or the chair in your daughter’s room, her snuggled up on Sonny’s chest with his arm wrapped protectively around her. He was definitely meant to be a girl dad and you never let him live it down, especially since baby number two is going to be a little girl too.
Every time Sonny looked at your daughter playing or sleeping all he could do was imagine the teenager and young woman she would grow up to be. He pictured her being a social butterfly because at three years old, she always waved and smiled at anybody that passed her. Sonny wasn’t too sure about her doing that but he figured as long as he was there it was okay. He knew all too well how some people had sick and twisted thoughts about children and he was always cautious with his little girl out in public.
He would picture her doing all those typical kid things, participating in different activities until she found one she liked. Your daughter loved helping Sonny cook or you bake which led Sonny to picture her going to culinary school and ultimately owning her own restaurant or being some kind of professional chef.
The only thing that worried Sonny was the teenage years. He knew between you and him talking with her and her seeing what love and a healthy relationship was that she would be alright. He also knew that he’d drop anything in that instant to console her if a boy broke up with her. Broken hearts were the worst and Sonny knew teenagers would feel like it’s the end of the world. He also knew teenagers could be mean and he never wants anyone being mean to his baby girl so he knew he’d let her vent or cry as long as she needed all while quietly planning a daddy/daughter day that she would pretend she was too old for but was overjoyed about it on the inside.
Sonny also pictured his princess on her wedding day, how they would both be a crying mess because it’s a happy occasion but one that meant change, that she was officially a fully grown woman who was about to embark on a new adventure with her love just like he had done with you. Then his thoughts trailed to being a grandfather and how excited he would be, from being at his daughter’s side just like he had her whole life and like he had been with you to playing with his grandchild or grandchildren, spoiling them rotten just for his daughter to scold him. He wouldn’t mind though because he would be too happy with how his life and his daughter’s life turned out, thick as thrives and best friends until the end of time.

Shinichiro Sano
"Okay," Shinichiro whispers, tugging the blindfold off your eyes. "Here we are."
Your breath leaves your lungs in a slow exhale, eyes taking in the sight before you with joy. Shinichiro seems to have set up the living room as a massive blanket fort - with a projector, a screen, and a thousand blankets you've never seen before.
"For me?" you wonder, crawling under the makeshift lodging with excitement. "This is amazing..."
"It's not even the best part," he adds, grinning lopsidedly as he leans down to press a button on a globe-looking object. With a flourish, little stars surround the room, making the fort glow as if you were under the actual stars outside. "It's not as good as camping," Shinichiro mumbles. "But it's the best I could do in November."
"It's perfect." Your reply is honest and kind like he expected it to be. While you make yourself comfortable, Shinichiro disappears into the kitchen, returning moments later with two mugs and a bowl of popcorn.
"Hot chocolate for two, and my famous chocolate-covered popcorn." You laugh, taking the mug in both hands and shimmying over to allow Shinichiro to nestle into you.
The movie debuting tonight is none other than The Shining, and while you're immersed in the film, Shinichiro is kissing down your neck. You lose the plot somewhere between Shinichiro's lips and yours, forgoing the movie for his body pinning you to the plush pillows and sheets scattered about.
"Shin..." you whine, though it's halfhearted and you really don't want him to stop. You don't want him to stop as he's pressing your legs back and pumping into you lazily. You don't want him to stop, especially now that you have him to yourself for an evening.
"Shinichiro..." you moan low, looping your arms around his neck.
"Mmhmm?" the man wonders, nestling his face into your skin and kissing your flesh tenderly as he slips out of you.
"I love you."
"I love you, too." He places another kiss on your temple. "Happy birthday, babe."
Ran Haitani
The cityscape below is just as breathtaking as the evening sky, as the sun rolls past the horizon with a careful and measured slowness.
"You really outdid yourself this time, Haitani," you whisper, shoving a bite of the vanilla and buttercream cake into your mouth. "It doesn't get better than this."
"What, sneaking away from the party downstairs?" he wonders, a braid sliding over his shoulder as he glances over to you.
"Yeah," you respond, teeth knocking against the tongs of the fork. "Was a good idea."
"I'll take that as a compliment." Your eyes return to the sight of the twilight sun, and a thought crosses your mind before flitting away like a piece of trash on the street below.
"Do you like getting older?"
Ran snorts.
"No." He sticks his hands into the sleeves of his too-big sweatshirt. "Even if I did like it, I'd find a way to dislike it somehow."
"Because you're a pessimist."
"I'm a realist," Ran retorts, rolling his purple eyes. "I don't think I've ever been fond of death." You hum in response, studying your friend carefully.
"But it's the moments in between the birth and death that matter, Ran."
"Is that so?" He offers you a cheeky smile, scooting closer to you on the edge of the roof. "Of course you would know, Little Miss Philosopher." You laugh, if only to dispel the nervousness you feel at being so close to someone you like. Ran smooths a hand over yours, placing the plate full of cake aside, and wrapping an arm around your waist.
"Ran--"
"It's your birthday," he whispers, dipping his head down low. "Make a wish, alright?" Your lips meet as soon as you think of one. Meanwhile, your heart flies out of your chest and into the night sky, joining the stars and rising moon.
Taiju Shiba
"Should've brought my wallet," you muse, fumbling for something to use so you can purchase a ticket for the fairgrounds.
The sounds of laughter and games ring loudly enough for you to grasp, but it's unattainable. Everything is impossible today, especially since it's your birthday.
"Ugh!"
Your wallet is nowhere to be found, and the attendant looks over at you, bored out of his mind at the sight of you struggling to keep it together.
"I just wanted to enjoy my one day..." Before you can collapse in a heap of tears, you feel someone pass by you to the counter.
"Two tickets, please." Your eyes are almost devoid of tears when the person turns to you, holding one ticket out with his massive hand.
"Here." Taiju Shiba. You flinch at the sight of the muscle-for-hire, wondering if he was doing you this favor just to make fun of you later. When you don't move to accept his offering, Taiju mumbles "here" a little louder, with emphasis. He knows you're good friends with his younger sister, but this isn't what you expected from a man like him, friends of siblings or not.
But you take the ticket anyway - unsure if it's the right thing to do - and as you proceed to walk toward the turnstile, Taiju pulls you along with him. "Taking too long," he gripes. "Gonna miss the show."
You sit stiff-backed as Taiju places himself in the seat beside you, arms crossed and feet on the back of another seat while he watches the circus performers dally about the ring. He squints his eyes at times, scoffs at the tricks, and even tosses up his arms at the display in exasperation.
But he stays with you through the whole thing.
Once the show is over, you stand nervously, fiddling with your purse strings.
"Um," you whisper. "Thank you for giving me a ticket. You don't have to stay."
"So you're just gonna wander around and not eat, drink, or play any games, huh?" You gulp. "Come on. We've got a lot of ground to cover."
You trail behind the hulking man, unsure about why he cares so much about your enjoyment at the fair. You'd seen Taiju before, his yellow eyes and permanent scowl scaring everyone in a ten-mile radius off. And even though he's dressed in a black tee and pants, you can see the gangster in his swagger. There's no hiding that from anyone.
At Taiju's behest, you play a few games, winning meager prizes and trinkets here and there. But the big games - the ones that require muscle and deliver massive prizes - you allow Taiju to play. And every time he wins, he hands you the prize with a meager "here" and then counts his money. Unfortunately, however, his winning streak comes to an end when he's faced with knocking over six milk bottles stacked in a pyramid.
"You've got to be kidding me," he gripes, throwing his best pitch at the contraption. It definitely hits the bottles, but none of them fall over. And the prize is a large, stuffed giraffe. One more throw proves just as fruitless as the others. Taiju lets out a frustrated growl, then turns his eyes to the stall keeper.
"This is a fixed game," he grits out, one eye squinting. "I want my money back."
"Sorry, kid," the man grumbles. "No refunds." Taiju grabs the man by the front of his shirt with both hands, shocking both you and the keeper.
"Give me my money," Taiju repeats. "Or you'll find yourself without a neck, little man."
Moments later, you're right beside Taiju, who has his money in one hand and the stuffed giraffe under the other.
"Did you have to do that?" you ask sweetly, and Taiju frowns.
"What?"
"That," you thumb over to the shaken stall owner. "Back there."
"Oh," he breathes, shrugging. "It's your birthday, y/n. I'm not letting some old coot ruin it for you."
"How did you--"
"Yuzuha told me," he replies, patting your head. "Now let's get some cotton candy. I'm starving."

I actually really like this idea and have been thinking about it but was wondering if it was too- sensitive? But now that I know others want it I will write it. Please please please do not read this is you are sensitive to the subject.
TRIGGER WARNING CONTENT WARNING attempted s uicide, mentions of s uicide
Yandere Adult Trio when you try to commit s uicide drabbles
Hisoka
You were desperate to escape this sadistic and cruel kidnapper. He took you from your home, and into somewhere unknown. It took you a while to realize why he wanted you at all... The reason shook your entire being- he claimed that you were meant to be his. That no one else could have you because you belong to him, he is the only person capable of loving you. He has drilled this into your brain but you never let it stick.
Nothing has worked, you tried attacking him, pretending to be sick, escape attempts: it all ends up with you in pain. How can someone who claims to love you, and holds you so closely, hurt you in the ways he has. It’s hard to admit but he had to put a splint on your wrist, after breaking it when you tried to run.
There’s only one option left. You can’t make it out of here alive, so you won’t. the place he has you is very confusing, the door is locked, and you can only assume there is a hallway outside of it. But when you look out of the window, you can barely see the ground because of how high up you are. That’s your escape.
It’s a large window that you will have to pry open. Hisoka does leave you alone occasionally but also leaves no room for escape. Though you don’t think he’s factored in self sabotage.
You have no idea where he is, but the moment he left you ran to the window. You grip the edge with your fingers and pull as hard as you can. Your hands begin to go white against the pressure, until you here a tiny “click”. You go flying back when the window shoots open in front of you. This is your chance. And on the off chance you survive- you’ll figure something out.
The wind is blowing, and is quite chilly. When you step out on the slight edge of the outside wall, your heart begins to pound. It’s time.
Wind whistles in your ears and your heart is pounding so hard you wonder why it hasn’t popped out of your chest. For a moment it feels like you’re flying- and you feel peace at last. This was never how you expected to go out, but it will have to do. You close your eyes and accept your fate, falling so fastly that you look like a blur.
‘Glump’. You bounce upwards and all the air in your body is knocked out of you. You’re left hanging outside of the building, still unable to see the ground despite how long you had been falling. It feels as if someone is holding your leg, the rest of your body dangling upside down. Just barely you manage to crane your head upwards- you’re floating?
You take a closer look, at the window which you fell from, is Hisoka waving down at you as if you didn’t just jump off the building. There is no escape... There is no escape from this nightmare. You’re pulled upwards until Hisoka grabs your body with his hands and pulls you back through the window.
You’re gasping for air, shock setting into your body and leaving you shaking. He smiles down at you, and sets you down on the shared bed. “I didn’t think you would go that far my pet.”
His gaze is burning holes through your head, but you’re more worried about not hyperventilating. He sits down next to you, a smile still on his face. Before you know it, there is no chance of catching your breath. His hand is wrapped tightly around your throat and you let out a weak excuse for a gasp.
“Oh my sweet pet. Please don’t do that again. I might have to punish you, but I’ll let you off this once since you look so cute this way.”
Illumi (fem!reader)
You just can’t take it anymore. The torture that he calls training. The extreme punishments that have left you with scars. The promise that you will be the mother of his child. And if not, you are useless. Your back is covered in scars, all from whips and chains that he has used as ‘discipline’ even if you were doing as you were told. Eventually he said, “I love you. My wife to be. The future mother of my children. It is only natural that I try to make you be better.”
If his version of making you better is torture then that’s not happening. At this point you would rather die than endure what he has put you through. He is thorough in keeping the room you are in “baby proofed”. There’s not a single sharp corner, no sharp objects, and no weapons of any kind. The lights are implanted in the ceiling so it’s not like you could use a lamp for anything.
The thought of attacking him is out of the question. You must find something for yourself. Eventually you find something that might work. He brings in plastic plates for you to eat off of. You’re sure if you attacked him with a plate he would make you eat off of the floor. You already have to eat with your hands.
You take the plate and bend it until it cracks, and splits in half. You continue to break it up into small pieces until you have something resembling a triangle with two soft edges and one sharp. Luckily he gives you hard plastic plates and not styrofoam ones, he has some class it seems.
Might as well get comfortable. You put some pillows and blankets down on the soft carpet and make a small bed to lay on. You sit up and find that you’re shaking. Your hands are shaking- but that’s to be expected. You put the piece of plastic against your wrist, it’s cold.
Does this mean you’ll be reborn? Or is there nothing after this? Either way, it must be better than this. You imagine a beautiful field where the grass is as soft as pillows and the sun shines just enough for you to feel warmth. There’s nothing for miles except for grass and you. The grass is cushioning you, making it comfortable to lay. You close your eyes and begin to move your hand downwards. Get it over with.
You pull your arm up so you can make a quick motion downwards but before you can... A hand grabs your wrist holding the plastic so tightly that you hear it crack, and are forced to drop the plastic.
You open your eyes and look up at the man above you. His face continues to show no emotion, but the grip on your wrist does. He is very angry. He lifts you up by your wrist and you hear another loud crack and squeal out in pain. You’re face to face, he’s holding you above the ground so your feet don’t touch, but all the strain is on your one wrist. If it’s not dislocated and broken by now, it would be a miracle.
In his usual commanding but monotone voice he says, “I cannot allow anyone to hurt the future mother of my kids.” He drops you on the ground and your knees take all of the force. “Even if it is the mother herself.”
He huffs and pulls a needle from his shoulder, “I suppose I must control you until you are stable. Or until you can bare my child.”
Chrollo
Honestly it could be worst. Though being held against your will does take a large toll on you. You’re fed everyday and can bathe and can read whenever and whatever. It’s like free living, though prison is also rent free. He is always so soothing and kind, offering to do things for you, get things for you, make things for you. It really seems like he wants to make you happy.
He has been very honest and open with you. He claims he loves you and that he couldn’t let anyone else have a moment in the presence of your beauty. He seems normal until you realize you’ve been kidnapped. You wonder if you would have every suspected him to be crazy if you met him on the street. Truthfully, probably not.
There are probably people in the world who would be grateful for what you have even if it is completely and utterly against your will. But that’s not the full picture. He’s so kind and says such nice things to you. Until you upset him. He never hurts you, and he never touches you aggressively. His threats are what destroy you, his threats that are not empty.
One day you had pushed him away and told him to ‘fuck off’. He became very angry but continued to smile. He walked up to you real slowly and said in a calm voice “I’ll kill your ex and leave their corpse here.” He was not lying. The very next day when you woke up, there was the corpse of your ex. Laying on the floor, staining it with blood and what remains of their organs.
After setting that example he became more subtle. If you could even call it subtle. Whenever you upset or pissed him off, you might find a finger in a bowl, with a ring that you gave your friend on it. You had seen many dismembered body parts- but that’s when you learned to keep your silence and obey lest everyone you love die.
There’s one way out of here and it’s not by escaping. You ripped up some towels and tied them into a noose. Somehow it seemed like it would work.
You stand on the wooden chair, taking long deep breaths, accepting your fate. The makeshift rope hangs from the ceiling, you grab onto it and get ready to put your head through it. Right as you go to reach your head through, the chair underneath you buckles and you fall to the ground with a loud thud.
You feel strong arms wrap around you. How did he get here? When did he get here? He pulls you onto his lap and begins rocking you.
“Oh it looks like you’ve split the back of your head open.” He touches the back of your head and shows his bloodied hand to you as proof. “I had no idea you were feeling like this. You could have told me.”
He kisses your forehead gently but you already know that these actions will accompany something else.
“Unless you were trying to escape me.” He chuckles and holds you firmly against his chest. “Then we would have a problem, wouldn’t we?”

Never Have I Ever
The Fablehaven gang plays Never Have I Ever. Not really shippy, but will tag for relevant ships.
---
“Never have I ever become an albino courtesy of a revenant,” Seth announced. His face expressed glee as Warren and Tanu each lowered one finger in response. He was down to three fingers left, himself, and Kendra thought he seemed determined to remain in the game.
“Well, never have I ever held Vasilis,” Tanu retorted. The smile dropped off of Seth’s face as he lowered one of his remaining fingers with a quiet ‘nooo’, and Kendra laughed a little as she also lowered one of hers.
“Never have I ever broken my leg by jumping off a roof,” Dale said, which prompted Warren to roll his eyes and lower another finger.
“It’s hard to play this game with people you actually know,” Warren protested. “I was nine at the time, yes it was a stupid choice, thank you for reminding me, now let me think for a minute.” He tapped his chin with the side of his hand and seemed to think for a moment. “Never have I ever… had a body double,” he said as he winked at Kendra, who stuck her tongue out at him and lowered one of her fingers. She had the most points left in the group thus far, so she’d been expecting some targeted statements, but still.
“That’s a cheap shot,” she said as she clicked her tongue in disapproval.
He shrugged. “Hey. There’ve been three of you. It’s not my fault that you’re the only one here who’s experienced that.”
“It’s not as fun as you’d think it is,” she replied.
“My turn,” Vanessa said. “Never have I ever spoken with the Fairy Queen.”
Seth let out a loud, “HA!” and gave Vanessa a high five. Warren applauded. Kendra sighed as she placed another finger down. Bracken followed suit as well. “Clever,” he said, sarcasm laced in his tone.
“Always,” Vanessa responded. “It’s your turn, Kendra.”
Well. Two can play at this game, Kendra thought. And, really, she’d meant for her next statement to be a jibe at Warren and Vanessa anyway.
“Never have I ever been engaged to marry anyone,” she said with confidence.
She’d expected the narrowed eyes from Warren and Vanessa as they each lowered a finger. She’d expected Seth’s guffaws and Tanu and Dale’s smiling eyes.
She had not expected for Bracken to lower one of his fingers, too.
Kendra turned her attention to the young man to her immediate left, who cleared his throat in an obvious - and vain - attempt to move the conversation forward, his face a lovely shade of pink. “Excuse me?” she asked, probably sounding about as shocked as she actually was. She wasn’t the only surprised one, though. Seth shouted, “What?!” at the same time that Warren announced it was story time while positively everyone’s eyes turned to Bracken, whose face flushed a darker shade of pink.
Bracken opened and closed his mouth a few times, unsuccessful at producing any words. “I… it was a long time ago, and an accident,” he said. “I didn’t mean for it to happen.”
“How do you accidentally get engaged to someone?” Dale asked. One eyebrow was pointed upward, and he appeared to be rethinking his entire opinion of the young man in question.
Kendra, for her part, was speechless. She didn’t know what to think. It was most definitely story time indeed.
“I… there was… it was…” Bracken cleared his throat again and scratched the back of his head, his gaze firmly fixed upon the table in front of him. “I was younger then. Still getting used to human socialization, still wandering between the wilderness and civilization. I’d decided to spend some time closer to towns, was low on human currency, and desired to reside inside an inn for a time. There were people in the street who advertised a sword-fighting competition, which offered a cash reward, so I decided I’d participate.”
Still unsure of what to think, Kendra furrowed her eyebrows. Where was this going?
“I’ve… I’m good with swords. The competition wasn’t particularly difficult to win, although the last human I faced that specific day was quite skilled. I digress. I won the contest, was given a large sum of money in a very nice bag, and was also told at that moment that I’d won the hand of the local princess.”
His face burned red. Kendra didn’t know whether to laugh or smack him upside the head. Maybe both? She refrained from reacting for the moment.
Seth, however, was not so well-controlled. He laughed heartily.
“‘The local princess’? When was this?” Warren asked.
“Shhh, he’s still telling the story,” Tanu said. “I want to hear this. Wish we had some popcorn.”
Bracken looked like he was marching toward his death. “A long, long time ago,” he said, “Somewhere in Ireland. Her name was Aoife MacMurrough.”
“So… did you marry her?” Dale asked.
His eyes grew large. “No!” he nearly shouted. He made eye contact with Kendra, who found it awkward to look at him right at that moment, so she diverted her attention to her hands, which still displayed the five points she’d managed to maintain.
“I tried to tell them that I thought this was a competition solely for money, and that I wasn’t interested in marriage, but the king and his vassals wouldn’t take no for an answer. The rules were apparently clear, although they’d somehow flown over my head. I snuck out of town that night and stayed far away from humans for quite a long time after that. I never found out what happened. Of course, I’d also fled to Greece and other countries and did not return to Ireland for a couple hundred years, but that’s a different story.” He reached toward Kendra and lightly touched her shoulder. “I don’t even know what Princess Aoife looked like.”
“How did you not know that you would wind up promised in marriage to a princess?” Vanessa asked, disbelief and disapproval very much evident in her statement. “Did you not listen to the rules? Did the people announcing the competition not make that clear? How is it possible to enter into a contest like that and not know what you’re fighting for?”
Kendra didn’t entirely appreciate the tone of voice Vanessa used, but she was incredibly grateful that her friend had been able to voice even just some of the questions she had on her own mind.
Bracken narrowed his eyes. “I was new to Gaelic, and it was mostly still a spoken language at that point in time,” he replied. “I still don’t know how I missed that bit of information. I blame my empty stomach and longing for a soft bed to sleep in for the night.”
“He was - he was hangry,” Seth said, then rolled off into laughter again. Warren and Tanu joined in a bit as well, the earlier looking up something on his phone.
“It was a poor decision. I know. Go ahead and laugh,” Bracken stated. He once again reached for Kendra. “I’m sorry,” he said in a quiet voice.
Sorry for what? Why should he be sorry? Should she be upset? Did she have a right to be upset? Was she upset? All of those questions and more buzzed about in Kendra’s brain, but she refrained from voicing any of them.
“Wait. Aoife MacMurrough?” Warren asked, his eyes practically bulging out of his head.
“Yes…?” Bracken responded.
Warren chuckled as he read from his phone. “Red Aoife. Married off by Saint Patrick himself. Warrior princess. That Aoife?”
“I don’t know!” Bracken insisted at the same time that Tanu said, “Saint Patrick, huh?”
“Bracken almost married a leprechaun?!” Seth cried out before yet more raucous laughter escaped from his body.
Dale spoke next, after a brief pause to allow for excess joviality from the company who sat around the table.
“Well. That is an odd circumstance,” he said. “I’ve bailed Warren out of quite a few odd circumstances over the years, but never anything like that. Right, Warren?”
Warren laughed. “Nope.”
“Alright then. I think my next move is to say, never have I ever been accidentally engaged to marry someone,” Dale continued. He innocently blinked at Bracken a few times, who looked dumbfounded and then lowered another finger.
“I’m never going to live this down, am I?” he asked.
Everyone shook their heads while Kendra finally reacted in laughter. The rest of the table followed after her example.
“Are you upset with me?” he asked her.
Kendra let laughter take over her body for a minute, then wiped a tear from one of her eyes. “Upset?” she asked as more giggles escaped from her lips. “Bracken. You are the only person I know who could have done that.” Giggles. Somehow, this didn’t seem out of character for him. The poor, oblivious unicorn.
“What other secrets are you hiding?!” Seth demanded.
Bracken folded his arms across his chest and refused to entertain that particular train of thought. “Nope. One story is enough for tonight,” he said. “Come on. Surely all of you have made poor decisions in your young lives as well.”
“Sure, but I never wound up promising myself to someone else by accident,” Vanessa shot back.
Bracken only rolled his eyes at that comment. “I believe it was my turn, next, before Dale stole it from me,” he said as he leveled Vanessa with a cool glare. “Never have I ever controlled someone in their sleep.”
Vanessa ran out of fingers at that one. “Very funny.”
“Always,” he retorted, copying her tone of voice from earlier on in the evening.
Kendra opened her mouth to interrupt them before they could launch into one of their infamous arguments, but Tanu beat her to the punch.
“Never have I ever been near Zzyzx,” he said.
Everyone else at the table groaned and lowered a finger, except Dale, who simply smiled. Warren ran out of points, Seth only had one left, Bracken had two, Tanu and Dale were each down to three, and Kendra still held onto four.
“Your turn again, Seth,” Tanu said once the damage had been assessed.
“Never have I ever… um…” he looked at his sister. “Never have I ever written letters to a dragon prince.”
Kendra could feel her face grow warm as she lowered a finger. “Warren and Vanessa are out, so it’s my turn,” she announced.
“A dragon prince?” Bracken asked. This time, his eyebrows were raised in surprise.
“I knew him as Gavin in his human form,” she said with a sigh. “He was actually Navarog.”
If Bracken’s eyes could have grown larger, Kendra was sure that they would have at that statement. “Excuse me?” he asked, in much the same tone as she’d asked him earlier. “I feel that another story time is in order.”
“Nah, we all know that story already,” Warren announced. “You two talk about that one between yourselves later. It’s Kendra’s turn now.”
“But-“
“Never have I ever drank an enlargement potion,” Kendra interrupted.
Bracken narrowed his gaze at her, but dropped the subject. For the moment.
Tanu lowered one finger. “Ouch, Kendra. I feel like I’ve been singled out.”
“Sorry, Tanu,” she replied with a smile.
Bracken huffed. “Never have I ever been duped by a demon dragon,” he stated.
He was astonished to find that everyone except Dale put their fingers down. Seth ran out of points, Tanu had one left, Kendra was down to three, and Dale and Bracken were still at two.
“All of you?!” he asked.
Dale shrugged his shoulders. “I never met the guy,” he said. “They all went adventuring with him.”
“Except me,” Vanessa elaborated. “I probably would’ve caught on if I had been there, though.”
“Let’s not start this up,” Warren said at the same time that Dale announced, “Never have I ever been in prison.”
Just like that, Tanu was out of points, Kendra had two, and Bracken had only one left.
“Never have I ever been trapped in a barn,” Kendra said. Dale laughed and lowered a finger. One left.
“Never have I ever had coffee,” Bracken said.
“Really?” Dale asked as he ran out of points. “Never?”
“Not once,” Bracken replied.
“How-?”
“You were in prison when coffee as a drink was invented, weren’t you?” Kendra laughed.
Bracken’s ears turned pink. “Maybe,” he admitted.
“You’re getting a cup in the morning,” Dale vowed. “I’ll make it for you.”
“Thanks…?” Bracken asked, sounding unsure whether or not he even cared. He turned toward Kendra, who still had two points left. “No coffee for you?”
She shook her head. I don’t like the smell.”
“Who doesn’t like the smell of coffee?” Dale asked, sounding utterly flabbergasted.
“Kendra,” Seth, Warren, Tanu and Vanessa all replied in unison.
Dale stared straight at Kendra, who laughed when he whispered with so much melodrama that he could only be Warren’s brother, “But. You were my favorite.”
“Hey!” Warren protested. “I’m your favorite!”
“Well, you might be now,” Dale said. His gaze turned back toward Kendra. “How can you not like coffee? Coffee is life.”
“I… I didn’t realize you liked it so much,” Kendra replied.
“The way into Dale’s heart is a healthy serving of coffee every morning,” Vanessa said.
“She makes the best coffee ever,” Dale confirmed. “No other woman will ever take her place.”
Kendra wasn’t sure what was happening. This game was getting ridiculous. Whose turn was it, anyway? She recounted the latest movies and realized that this game was down to just her and Bracken, he only had one point, and it was her turn.
She smirked. “Bracken,” she began.
“Yes?” he asked.
“Never have I ever won a sword-fighting competition,” she announced.
Bracken lowered his pinky, while Kendra waved her two remaining fingers in his face. “I win!” she taunted.
“That’s not fair,” he playfully complained.
“Totally fair,” Warren insisted.
“I lost three points from one story!” he exclaimed.
Seth shrugged. “It be like that sometimes.”
“Kendra survives the night,” Tanu stated. “Now we all know who to target in the next round.”
Vanessa raised her eyebrows in a somewhat threatening manner which made Kendra wonder what other embarrassing material was going to be paraded about that evening. She looked around to find similar expressions on most everyone else’s faces, too, and laughed when she realized that she would be running out of points very quickly. “No repeats from this round,” she said.
“That’s fine with me,” Tanu said. Everyone else nodded and voiced their agreement.
“Great! I’ll go first!” Seth announced. “Never have I ever run away from a fiancée!”
Bracken planted his face into the palm of his hand while everyone at the table enjoyed a solid laugh.

Just Doin’ My Job, Darlin’
Summary: Your job as a Ravager gets you into trouble with the intergalactic hero known as Captain Marvel.
Pairing: Reader x Carol Danvers
Warnings: some blood, light violence
Words: 3,547
"Uh... hey," you practically stuttered out, startled to find someone behind you.
You were a ravager, and you were damn good at your job. That meant knowing your surroundings, especially when you were on a job. Yet, somehow, she'd managed to sneak up on you. If you hadn't been quick enough to shove the ring deep into your pocket, you'd have been caught red-handed.
You were damn good at your job, and you composed yourself in seconds. The ring slipped out from where it was clutched between your fingers and you withdrew your hands from within your pockets. You plastered a confident smile on your face as you crossed your arms across your chest.
"Hey there," the blonde offered, an equally confident smile on her face. "What's up?"
"Nothin'," you shrugged, uncrossing your arms and looping your thumbs through the belt loops on your pants. "Taking a walk. Beautiful night, isn't it, Beautiful?"
The blonde's eyes sparkled in amusement. She took a few steps closer. Confidence still coursing through your veins, you let her. You didn't make any move to back down. She noticed that. When she stopped, she was only a few feet away from you. Another step and she could have reached out and touched you.
The blonde's lips crept into a cocky expression. "Beautiful night indeed."
You didn't dare make it obvious how you were checking out the area for the second time. When you'd entered, you'd made note of every entrance and exit to the area. The blonde was blocking the one that lay directly ahead, but not the one behind you. That was free for you to turn and run to. You just needed to wait. If you went now, she'd be right behind you and able to catch up to you in mere seconds.
"Headed somewhere? I could walk you?" She offered. "You know, Fennal isn't always safe at night."
"I'm just going up the street. I'm good thanks."
You could feel the ring pressed against your leg in your pocket. You knew she knew you were up to no good. You also knew that she knew you knew she knew. Neither of you would say that aloud, though. It was a bit of a game, at this point. She wanted that little piece of jewelry in your pocket. You wanted it too. No, you wanted the pay you were promised for stealing it.
"You sure? I'm probably headed in the same direction."
"I doubt it," you laughed.
The blonde smirked a little. You kept your eyes with hers, unable to ignore just how beautiful her light brown irises really were. But you wouldn't tell her that. You wouldn't tell her jack shit. You were waiting for her to get distracted for one brief moment so that you could turn and sprint down that alley. It seemed your wishes were heard.
"Hey, Carol!" A voice called.
The blonde, Carol, let her gaze flicker toward the voice for a mere millisecond and you took the opportunity to turn and dart as fast as you could down the alley behind you. Your ears strained to hear over the sound of your own shoes hitting the gravel beneath your feet. Unmistakably, though, you heard the set of footsteps chasing after you. You pushed even harder.
You ducked through a backyard, pushing out of your way a jacket that was hanging on a clothesline. At the other side of the yard, you hopped over the fence and landed smoothly on the ground on the other side. But now, you didn't hear Carol's steps. You didn't risk slowing down. You kept onward in the direction of your pod.
As you ran, you became aware of your shadow growing in front of you. It was surrounded by a glowing orange light. Even as your lungs struggled to get enough oxygen, your eyebrows furrowed in confusion. When your shadow began to spin around your body until it was behind you, you realized why. You could have huffed aloud at the complete unfairness of the situation.
Carol was fifteen feet off the ground, surrounded by a bright orange glow. She still had that same smirk on her face as she looked down on you. You were hesitating in your step, now, not sure you could outrun her. You knew one thing, though. Despite these powers the blonde had, you weren't about to give up. You turned on your heel.
You watched your own shadow to keep track of Carol. She was following you. Your shadow shrunk and indicated she was getting closer. When your shadow began to shrink faster, you made a sharp turn to the left. The shadow grew a little as she fell behind a few feet, not prepared for the sudden change in direction. Your chest was rising and falling rapidly, but you weren't a stranger to chases. You'd had more than a few run-ins with guards from many planets throughout the galaxy.
You smirked at the sight in front of you. One of the planet's natives had just inserted the keys into a hover bike but hadn't yet gotten on. You struggled to go faster than you thought you could. You pushed him to the ground, hopped on, and immediately pushed the bike as fast as it would go. You had to grip the handles tight as your inertia tried to hold you back.
The bike seemed to rival Carol's speed. The size of your shadow in front of you stayed constant and you managed to take a quick glance behind you. Carol was high in the air, hands down by her hips, moving more quickly than a person should be able to in order to keep up with the bike you were on. Then your pod came into view and you let a small smirk come over your face. You turned to the bike made to move past the ship, then jumped off.
Pain raced through your body. You ignored it, rolling a couple times to take the impact, racing up the ramp as quick as you possibly could, and slamming your hand down on the red button to shut the hatch. Carol wasn't thirty feet away. You took the last of your energy to roll onto your back.
"Athena, max speed!" You shouted.
The AI heard. She ignored every protocol about seatbelts and closed doors as the captain's voice override her programming. The pod had a max speed of 50,000 kilometers per hour. It was nothing compared to the main ship, but it was sure faster than Carol. The ship's acceleration got the best of her, and soon enough you were barreling through space and leaving her far behind.
As it had sped up faster than physics should have allowed, though, your body had slammed into the wall behind you. You groaned as you rolled away from it, every bone, organ, and tissue in your body aching from the speed. Your organs seemed to have caught up to the ship, finally. You resisted the urge to puke as you pulled yourself to your feet, rubbing a sore shoulder and swiping your fingers over the blood dripping down your forehead.
"Thanks, Athena. Take us home."
"Roger that, Boss."
You let yourself drop into your chair. You took the black mask off from where it had rested over the top half of your face, rubbing the pad of your index finger over the spot where it had pushed into the bridge of your nose, grumbling in frustration. You could feel the indent in your skin.
"ETA?"
"Twenty-seven minutes."
Those twenty-seven minutes seemed to take forever. The pod was small. There wasn't anywhere you could lay your head back. There wasn't a damn bathroom, a fact you couldn't seem to get your mind off. When the pod had secured itself to the mothership, you practically sprinted out and to the nearest toilet.
Your red jacket was undone as you stepped onto the bridge of The Athena. It was the middle of the night based on your home planet, the time that you and your crew followed to at least keep a semblance of a schedule. Because of the time, though, most of the crew had retreated to their quarters for the night and were fast asleep.
"Hey, Cap."
The greeting caught your attention. You turned toward the voice, smiling when you met the gaze of your first mate. He wasn't much younger than you were. He was from a planet called Dervius, having retreated from the planet to live a life with the Ravagers after living a life of poverty there for ten years, having been cast out by his family at only eight. It was your third day as the leader of your clan when you picked him up and took him in, giving him a spot in your crew. That was already five years ago and the Dervion had worked his way all the way up to first mate.
"Vyn," you greeted.
"How'd it go?"
You pulled the sparkling ring from your pocket. Vyn grinned at the sight of it. He pulled a device out of his pocket, tapping on the screen a few times and then humming quietly as he scrolled. He let out a soft exclamation of victory as he found what he had been searching for.
"Three hundred thousand. Damn, Cap. That thing can't be worth 100k."
"Well, we charge for the stealing part too, Vyn."
Vyn shrugged. "Fair enough. Why don't you go catch some shuteye? We should be back to the buyer in a few hours. Who's doing the delivery?"
"I will," you said, sticking the ring back into your pocket.
Vyn chuckled. "You know, Cap, that most clan leaders aren't so hands on with the dirty work."
"I'm not most clan leaders, Vyn," you winked. "I'm heading down to my quarters. Call for me when we get there."
︽✵︽
You straightened out your red jacket as you stepped out of your pod. You nodded at the landing strip attendant as you ventured onto the familiar planet. You whistled merrily on your way, flashing wide smiles at whoever you happened to make eye contact with. You glanced at your phone as it directed you where to go. You could have caught a ride, but you were up for a bit of a walk.
It was a half hour walk to the place you were looking for. You stepped in quietly. It was a bar, and not exactly a very nice looking one. You wouldn't be surprised if half the people in there were criminals. In fact, you wouldn't be surprised if you weren't the only Ravager in there. When you entered you pulled the mask over your face again, clipping the flames of the Ravagers over your chest.
You stepped up to the bar and ordered a drink. You took it when it came and slid into one of the booths. You'd arrived early, and knew it'd be a while before the client arrived. You scanned the area as you waited, sipping quietly as you watched the planet natives, finding entertainment in two particularly large guys fighting over who had made the illegal move in a game of darts.
"Captain Red?"
Of course, that wasn't your real name. You'd never give your real name to a client. You only nodded, gesturing to the seat across from you. He sat down and fumbled with his hands a little, clearly nervous. It wasn't an uncommon reaction. He was meeting with a thief for hire and paying a good sum of money for stolen goods.
"I have the money."
"Straight to business, I see," you hummed, sipping from your glass. "That's alright with me."
You reached into your pocket, pulling out the ring. His eyes immediately locked to it. He reached out and you pulled away, keeping the piece out of his reach. You raised a single eyebrow as his eyes moved back up to yours. You clicked your tongue as a small smile of amusement played over your lips.
"Units first."
He nodded. He pulled out a device from his pocket, pressing some buttons on it. Yours, which sat out on the table in front of you, beeped. You glanced at it to find the transfer complete. Then you nodded, placing the ring flat in your palm, and holding it out in front of you.
"Pleasure doing business with you, sir."
He grabbed the ring, nodded, and scampered out without another word. You chuckled lightly to yourself, draining what was left in your glass. You pulled the mask off again and took the pin off your chest. Everyone else in the room was too drunk to notice the change. You stepped up to the bar once more.
"I'll take another."
The bartender nodded. He filled your glass as you put a finger to the comm in your ear and let Vyn know you were going to stick around for a little fun, should anyone want to join. But the Ravagers had made their own fun the previous night and were far too hungover to think of joining you in the bar. You rolled her eyes as you lowered your hand.
"Prettiest girl in the bar, aren't ya?" A voice slurred to your left.
You turned just in time to see the man flashed you a wide grin. You nodded and tilted your head a little. "I'd expect."
"So why don't ya come sit a little closer?"
You laughed. "I'm alright just where I am."
He sneered. "Listen here-"
But a shadow appeared between you and he, cast upon the bar top. It distracted the both of you. You turned to see who had stepped up to the two of you, and your jaw could have hit the ground. But your face stayed blank as the blonde's gaze met you for just a brief second before turning back to the man who had been hitting on you. She raised an eyebrow at him.
"Everything alright here?"
"'Course."
"I'd hope," she hummed. "Because I seem to remember you and I having a nice, long talk about good manners."
"We did," he coughed. He stood up, nodding at you and retreating back across the room to where his friends were all jesting and shouting, spilling their drinks on the tabletops, the floor, and themselves.
You turned your attention back to the woman who had stepped up next to you. She was taking the seat beside yours, ordering a drink for herself and another for you. You smirked a little when she turned to you. Despite your lack of a mask and the absence of the flames upon your chest, she recognized you immediately.
"Long time no see," she offered.
You chuckled. "Very. What's a Fenarian guard like you hangin' out in a place like this for, Carol?"
"Caught my name, I see," she said, accepting the drink that was slid toward her. "But the guard thing isn't quite accurate."
"Oh, no?"
That didn't get a reply. You sipped your drink, watching her the entire time. She only shrugged her shoulders, drinking from her own glass. It stayed like that for a long while. Your egos were both too big to dare be the one to break the silence that had fallen upon you. So, you drank in silence. In fact, you'd both drained your glasses before Carol finally took it upon herself to be the one to speak the first words.
"You know my name, and I don't know yours."
"That's intentional," you told her. "But if you must call me something, I usually just go by Captain. Cap works."
"That's a title, not a name."
"A fact I am well aware of, Carol."
When she didn't reply, you smirked a little. You weren't shy about the way you were eyeing her up and down. She was, to be frank, one of the most attractive women you'd ever met. She was smirking too, once your eyes had finally made their way back up to hers. You only offered a small tilt of your head in acknowledgement.
Carol stood. She placed a few coins down on the bar, enough to cover her own tab, yours, and a little more. She offered you a hand. You were confident, cocky even. You weren't one bit afraid of this woman. You put your hand into hers and let her pull you to your feet. She led you away from your stool, out the door, and into the bright sunlight of the planet. Then she kept going, moving away from the bar and leading you down the streets. At some point your fingers had intertwined with hers and now you were walking hand in hand down the streets.
"You know I didn't need anyone to save me from that guy, right?"
"A thanks might have sufficed," she replied.
"It might have," you agreed.
Finally, you both arrived back at the landing strips. She led you right back to your own pod. You hadn't yet paid the fee for having kept it parked there for the last hour and a half but, judging from the look on Carol's face, you weren't going anywhere just yet. This time it was you leading as you pulled her on board, closing the hatch behind you. Once it was closed you moved.
Your hands moved and took Carol's waist, pulling her close to you. Her body was flush against yours, her hands in your hair, as she kissed you back. She let out a soft noise as you pushed her against the wall behind her. You smirked against her lips. It was a long moment before Carol pushed you away breathlessly. But you weren't done.
Your lips moved down to her neck, bringing the skin between your lips as you sucked roughly at it. It was a full moan that tumbled from her lips this time. You wanted to laugh in victory, but instead you released the skin, running your tongue softly over the mark you'd left on her. You moved back up to her lips and pecked them once, pulling back to glance into those light brown irises.
"That all you got then, Y/N?"
"I thought you didn't know my name."
Carol rolled her eyes. "Sorry, love. I could call you Captain if you wanted."
You put a hand against her cheek. "That would be extraordinarily hot."
Carol laughed. She put her lips against yours again, kissing you once more. She spun the both of you so that you traded places. This time it was your back against the wall. You leaned into it without much fight, letting her take her turn controlling the pace of the kiss. When you finally separated, she rest her forehead against yours.
"I love you."
You laughed. "We just met."
"Oh, fuck off," she laughed too.
You brought her hand into yours, thumb gliding across the ring you'd put on her finger five years ago. Her eyes darted to the identical one on yours. Her smirk faded into a smile and she brought you hand up to her lips, kissing your knuckles softly. You leaned a little further into her touch, pecking her lips once more.
"I love you, too," you muttered against her.
She laughed. She put two fingers beneath your chin, tilting your gaze up to meet hers. You loved those eyes with that cunning sparkle in light brown irises that you'd fallen so hard for all those years ago. Just as she was about to kiss you once again, there was a banging on the outside of the pod. You huffed in frustration.
You didn't even bother going out. You quickly transferred the fee you owed electronically. The banging stopped, and so you assumed everything had gone through without a problem. You shoved the small device back into your pocket and then turned your attention back to Carol. She was watching you with amusement sparking in her eyes.
"You're cute when you're angry," she commented.
"Yeah, yeah," you rolled your eyes. "We should get out of here before someone, you know, chases me off the planet."
Carol laughed, she put her arms around your waist. "I'm Captain Marvel. I can't let some thief get away with stealing valuables. Maybe they shouldn't have run."
"Just doin' my job, darlin'," you chuckled, arms resting on her shoulders and hands linking loosely behind her neck.
She hummed softly at that, kissing you again. It had been five years and her touch still made you melt. You were sure another five years could pass and that still wouldn't have changed. Your eyes fluttered shut and your lips moved with hers and the world could have disappeared around you and you wouldn't have noticed. But it didn't. There was banging on the door again.
"I need this spot!" The attendant shouted from the other side of the door.
You huffed. You forced yourself to peel away from Carol's body. You took a seat in front of the controls, and Carol took the one next to you. You started everything up, checking that they'd recharged the battery while you'd been there. Once you were sure of everything, you lay a hand on Carol's thigh and glanced out the front window.
"Take us away, Athena," you said.
"Roger that, Captain Danvers."

Javier Peña x Fem!Reader ; warnings: language
Javier Masterlist
»»————- ♡ ————-««
“Oh no, no, no,” Javier shook his head fervently as he picked up his glass of whiskey, downing it in one go before he took a long drag of his cigarette. He seemed amused as he spoke in rapid Spanish to his companion for the evening, a man you hadn’t met before. A small smile tugged on your features as you noticed just how relaxed he seemed for once; normally he was tense and tired, just like you and Steve as well. It had been a last minute decision to come here for a drink by yourself, and you definitely hadn’t expected to find Javier here, but you weren’t upset in the slightest, deciding to go in and say a quick hello and see how it went. But his next words caused you to freeze in place.
“She’s nothing to me,” he commented as both burst into gruff laughter, “she’s just a kid, but good for a fuck now and then. A good rookie, but that’s it. If you want something worth your time, you know where to go.”
Your heart felt like it froze before dropping into your stomach at his words; they were so cruel and vile, laced with amusement at your expense. It didn’t long to figure out who he was talking to. Rookie? There was no one but you. Fucking every once in a while? Also you - well the two of you. But it had never been just...sex to you. It had always held so much more weight and somehow you’d thought it had for him to.
“Move,” a man, clearly drunk, shoved you slightly as stood in the doorway, rooted in place. Your eyes were focused on Javier, and you made a small sound as you were jilted to the side. Javier’s head snapped up at the slight commotion and he paled as he noticed that it was you; shit, shit, shit. Judging by the broken hearted look on your face, he knew you had heard everything.
You mumbled a quick apology before meeting Javier’s eyes for the briefest of moments before tearing out of the bar and out into the cold, dark street. It wasn’t but a moment before tears were spilling down your cheeks as you tried to control the sobs that threatened to rack your body. No - you weren’t going to let him or anyone see you like this. If he even cared enough to come after you and see if you were okay or what you’d heard. Judging by the cruel sharpness of his words, you highly doubted he would give the situation as much as a passing thought.
Well, you huffed lightly to yourself, dabbing at your tears with the sleeve of your sweater, no one to blame but yourself. Everyone had warned you about Javier Peña - you just hadn’t listened.
»»————- ♡ ————-««
“What’s wrong, Peña?” the man across the table looked at him and laughed, flagging down a nearby waitress and signaling for her to get two more beers, “you look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Javier closed his eyes and let out a long breath, running a hand over his tired eyes. Part of him knew he should have come after you, but another part of him figured it was pointless. You’d probably never want to see his face again. It was supposed to be a quick comment to his contact, a blaise comment so the man knew to stay away from you, so you were protected - at least as much as he could ensure it. Instead he royally fucked everything up, and naturally you’d had impeccable timing.
“Nothing,” he lied as he accepted the beer and downed half of it in one go, “nothing at all.”
»»————- ♡ ————-««
Part of you had wanted to call in sick to work the next day - and the rest of your days. But you’d decided that that was not the way to handle things. You were going to steel yourself and offer him as much indifference and disregard he had afforded you. May it was stupid and childish, but in the moment you didn’t care. He didn’t want anything to do with you and only viewed you as a good fuck now and then, then you would give it right back. You were finally going to take everyone’s advice and keep Javier Peña out of your personal life. At work it was unavoidable, but everywhere else, you were done with him.
“Good morning,” you offered Steve a kind smile before handing him a cup of coffee just like you did most mornings. Javier was already at his desk, pouring over paperwork, but stopping to glance up at you. Steve offered you his own greeting before eagerly accepting the coffee and getting back to work; you could feel Javier’s seeing gaze on you, but weren’t about to break down and gave into him.
“Morning,” Javier offered, looking intently at you, as you sat down at your own desk and busied yourself with paperwork. There was a ton of it to do after last week’s raid, and that meant the three of you would be stuck at the office for the next few days. Not exactly ideal, to be stuck in close proximity with the man you desperately wanted to avoid, but you’d deal with it. You nodded and made a small, noncommittal sound.
Steve looked between the two of you, opening and closing his mouth a few times as he realized something was wrong. Javier and yourself were normally thick as thieves, so this was a sharp contrast to what he had come to know as normal. While he didn’t know the full extent of your relationship, he knew it was more than friendly, and it didn’t long to figure out that something had happened. But he wasn’t going to push it or say anything; it wasn’t his place and he was sure that the two of you would figure it out.
The rest of the day continued in much the same fashion...as did the day after...and the day after that. You played the role of cool and collected, not hurt and unphased by anything, while Javier felt like he was slowly breaking down. He just wanted to speak to you for just a moment, to explain what had happened and that none of it was true - he’d never meant to hurt. He’d just wanted to protect you.
By Friday evening, he couldn’t handle it anymore; he needed to explain himself, to just get you to listen for a few minutes. Whether or not you chose to believe him would be another case.
“Dulzura-”
“I have a name, Javier,” you snapped at him, trying to push past him and head out of the office for the weekend. You’d planned to meet up with Connie to grab a drink, a much needed girls’ night, and that didn’t include Javier. You’d spent all week trying to get up and over him, and even though you weren’t sure it had worked, you liked the illusion that it did.
But the seasoned agent was quick, and was able to grab your wrist and keep you from walking away. You looked at him, a frown on your features as you tried to pull out of his grasp, but he was stubborn and steadfast and didn’t release you.
“We need to talk,” he insisted softly as you huffed impatiently. You didn’t dare to meet his eyes for fear of breaking down and giving in to him. Instead you stared at your feet and wished the ground would open and swallow you whole.
“There’s nothing to talk about,” you hissed, the venom in your voice causing him to recoil, “you made that crystal clear. I’m just...what did you call? A good fuck every now and then? What could you - the wonderful most amazing agent - possibly want with me? A rookie?”
“You need to listen and let me explain-”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” you’d caught him off guard and he dropped your wrist, allowing you to pull out of his grasp and take a step away, "if you thought that's all I was you could have made it clear. I never...I don't know what I was thinking. I guess I should have listened, huh? Stay away from Javier Peña and I was just thinking dumb rookie that didn't listen. Joke's on me, right?"
"That's not - that's never what this was. Not to me," he insisted as you'd started to walk, causing you to stop dead in your tracks. Slowly turning around, you cocked your head to the side in confusion, "that's not what this started out as or what I wanted."
"Oh really?" you were stuck somewhere between shock and disbelief as you laughed bitterly, "do you mean it or are you saying that because you're trying to look good? Is that what you tell all the girls when you want them to get back in your bed?"
"Would you just stop and listen to me for one fucking moment?!" the sharpness of his tone caused you to look at him in surprise, "I've been trying to talk to you all week and you've been avoiding me like I've got the fucking plague. You won't even look at me."
"You broke my fucking heart!" you yelled back at him, feeling something snap within you as a few tears rolled down your cheeks, "and the worst thing? I was never even supposed to know. You couldn't even tell me to my fucking face! Was I supposed to find out or just be a laughingstock for you and your buddies? Or what about your informants? Why aren't you with her?"
"Stop! Just let me talk and listen for a moment," he ran his hands over his face as he groaned in annoyance, "fuck - if you never do anything else just please listen now. A few minutes is all I'm asking for."
"Fine," you agreed quietly, crossing your arms over your chest as you quirked an eyebrow, "you've got five minutes."
"You weren't supposed to hear those things I said," he agreed with a heavy sigh, as you tried not to sniffle too loudly at his declaration, "because it wasn't true - not in the way you think."
"How...what-?"
"My turn to talk," he reminded you, "your turn to listen. That man I was with...he's not a good man, Dulzura. He's an informant, but that doesn't mean he has any honor or virtue. If he knew you were mine, or anything if the sort, he would have used that against me in a heartbeat. He's not a good man. And all I wanted to do was protect you. The only way I could think to do that was to make it seem like I didn't care - if you don't matter he won't think twice about you. If he knew even a fraction of how much you mean to me, you'd be his first target if the tables ever turned. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
"Javier…" at some point your mouth had dropped and your mind was reeling as you tried to figure out what was going on. Had you really jumped to the worst conclusion with knowing only half of the story? He leaned against the door-frame and let out a long sigh, "do you...really?"
"I just wanted to protect you," he confirmed with a small nod, "I didn't mean for you to hear it because none of it was true. Of all the times for you to walk into that shitty bar...amazing timing, Dulzura. I'm sorry you had to hear it, especially since none of it was true."
"Wait," you looked at him with wide eyes as your heart sank when you realized you'd been giving him the cold shoulder for no reason. You felt like a fool; you should have known better than just to give into your flighty emotions. You knew Javier - the real Javier. You should have known you could have trusted him - talked to him from the start. But...shit.
"I would have told you that already if you'd just let me talk and not run away every time you saw me," he admitted with a shrug, "maybe it wasn't the best way to say it but I just...I want to keep you safe. Always."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
And just like that, you threw your arms around his neck and pulled him close before crashing your lips onto his. He kissed you back without hesitation, his strong arms wrapping around your waist as he pulled you close.
"What if someone sees?" you suddenly remembered between kisses as grinned at him. He shook his head and easily played it off.
"Doesn't matter," he insisted as he kissed you softly, this particular kiss filled with more longing and saccharine intensity, "I'll protect you. I'm sorry for how things seemed. I would never mean anything like that."
"I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions," you whispered softly, sneaking in a few more kisses, "I should have known better. I should have just come to you."
"Next time," he insisted as he gently touched your face, "Dulzura - you know how much I…"
"I know, Javier. Now I truly know," you grinned at him, "me too."
"Want to get out of here?"
"Sorry babe," you teased, "its girls night. I would not be opposed, however, if my two favorite partners happened to make a surprise appearance at the same bar…"
"See you soon," he grinned, "and then you're all mine."
"I'm counting on that."

Aether x Reader || Glaze Lilies
"This one is delicious too," you said, swallowing another piece of the dish. “Paimon would probably create another stomach for these miracles.”
Aether chuckled softly as he bites off another piece of hot roll filled with traditional Liyue-rich stuffing. “I guess even that is not enough when the competition is the Sticky Honey Roast that Amber offered her.”
You smiled in response.
Late fall in Liyue was a beautiful time of the year.
The city was always full of red and gold colours like towns straight from fairy tales, but in this time, when the leaves have already turned dark orange and the air was carrying an aroma of seasonal seed cookies, Liyue looked even more breathtaking.
You were sure that it was Amber who made it possible for you to go somewhere on Aether's day off from doing… everything. Normally, you would be sitting in some restaurant watching Paimon heartlessly ordering all the dishes from a menu without looking at the number of zeros of each price.
But when Amber heard you mention dates accompanied by beautiful, falling leaves, she blushed as the flame of pure determination appeared in her eyes. In the evening she appeared in front of Paimon and offered her to go out to the city for one day.
Oh, if she only knew how much it will cost her...
"[Name], stay close to me, or I will lose you in this crowd." Aether gripped your hand tighter.
"Getting lost in such a big city would be romantic, wouldn't it?" you giggled.
"Getting lost and being found in the wrong place and time wouldn’t be," he replied. “Every city is much more dangerous when the night comes.”
You turned into another street to finally reach the viewpoint in Liyue.
You could see a lot more from there, but less people could see you. Who would twist their neck to see two little dots on top of a mountain?
"It's going to rain soon," Aether nodded at the clouds, which were moving quickly toward the city. He clicked his tongue. “If we don't want to get wet, we should be getting ready.”
"Oh, isn't that Aether?"
You turned around to see a girl approaching you two.
She was gorgeous—her long blonde hair waved in the breeze as if it existed only to be an effect for them. She had every girl's dream figure, bright, sparkling eyes, and rosy cheeks.
Perfect girl.
And the perfect person to compare yourself with to create a trillion complexes about your body.
She had a very charismatic, attractive aura around her, but the way she behaved towards Aether was slowly starting to bother you. Of course, it might just be some kind of funny, totally wrong prejudice against her, but ...
“[Girl's name]?” Aether muttered, not noticing your pleading gaze saying: ‘let's get out of here.’ “—What are you doing here?”
"I was just passing by," she laughed, her voice soft, pearl-like. “I couldn't go without saying hi, haha!” Then she looked at you and fixed you with a stare. It wasn't a cold look, but it wasn't friendly either. “And who is that?”
"Ah," Aether shook his head, as if only now remembering that he had not come here alone. He put his hand around your waist. “This is my girlfriend, [Name]”
“I didn't know you had a girlfriend! You always have to be so mysterious?” Aether rolled his eyes at her words, even if he smiled slightly. Then she turned to you. “Could I kidnap him for a moment? I need help moving my luggage to my new apartment.”
She grabbed his hand without waiting for your answer, as if it were a rhetorical question. As Aether released his hand from your waist, you felt as if you were left alone in a foreign land.
“I'll be back in a minute!” After these words, he turned to the blonde and at an equal pace, they turned around the corner of some house, behind the wall of which you could see an extremely high pile of boxes.
"It probably won't be a minute," you sighed.
You leaned against the railing and stared at the toes of your shoes, telling yourself that you should have opposed her. Would that be selfish? You've been dreaming about a date with Aether for so long, without third parties, and now that the moment has come, it turns out that someone will take from you your boyfriend anyway.
Five minutes passed... eight minutes... ten... thirteen...
After fourteen minutes, you got up and decided to check how much was already packed. Some of the super-heavy boxes seemed to be gone, but that was up for discussion since there were dozens of them here.
You couldn't find a familiar face in sight. Did... they just leave you here? More likely, they were just carrying some luggage into one of the nearby houses, but you couldn't knock on every door to find them—it would take hours.
You felt yourself slowly breaking down.
You knew you were a little (a little very much) jealous of this girl, but more depressing was the fact that this was going to be yours and Aether’s day. COMMON. Now you thought you were the loneliest person in the universe.
"I'm not going to get upset," you repeated aloud, trying to motivate yourself to leave this place. "I'll go... I’ll go somewhere and have a good time... alone."
With a quick step, as if you didn't want to think about this anymore, you turned back and followed the alleys you and Aether had previously travelled. You came to the food stores that you had only glanced at before, but you didn't have time to taste anything else because you were in a hurry to get to the viewpoint.
It is true that you ordered take-out rolls, but the whole range of different types of food seemed very tempting despite the filling bread.
And the smell of such highly seasoned dishes was tempting—very much.
"Sorry," a young girl approached you after you shoved a piece of meat into your mouth. You swallowed it quickly, almost choking on it. “Would you like to buy some flowers?”
“…Why not?” you replied.
The girl put the money in the pocket of her dress. Instead of putting a flower on your hand, she came closer and gently braided a glaze lily into your hair near right ear.
"Here you are," she replied and looked at you. A smile beamed across her face. “You look really pretty!”
"Thank you," you replied. You noticed that this was the last flower in her basket, and because of that, the ten-year-old girl seemed proud of herself. She walked away, thanking again for the purchase.
I think that one more on the other side and all would be perfect...
You glanced at the setting sun and concluded that you could give Aether a similar lily. Wouldn't that look cute on him? There was still some time before it will get completely dark. Even the rain clouds that had previously seemed to be crossing the sky at an alarming pace now seem to have stopped.
You finished eating and walked briskly towards the Danyu Ruins, hoping to find some pretty lilies on your way.
The silence, or rather the sound of the wind and the leaves rustling against each other, were the only thing that accompanied your footsteps since you left Liyue. It seemed relaxing at first, but now that the skies were a deeper blue than orange, you concluded that a travelling companion would not be a bad idea.
“They're here!” you finally found two lilies that glistened slightly in the dark. You collected them quickly and turned to head back into town.
…You were surprised when you encountered many, many roads, each of them unfamiliar.
"I should have left a trail of breadcrumbs," you joked, though panic had already paralyzed your legs.
Your problems were not diminished by the fact that you heard mad laughter near you. You felt your heart leap into your throat, tears welling up in your eyes as a figure emerged from behind the bushes.
Abyss mage.
You have heard about them from the stories of Aether, who sometimes told you about his adventures when you tried to bandage his wounds with a bandage, herbs, or other medicines.
As soon as your heart was beating, so quickly the magician saw you. He teleported a meter away from you and you started running.
Faster, faster, faster.
Before you ran a hundred meters, a mage appeared before you. You didn't even have time to stop when he waved his hand, and a large ice crystal formed in front of him. Huge and pointed towards you.
Almost as soon as it was launched, a certain force pushed both of you backwards. You felt pain in your left leg, but somehow you didn't fall. Strong arms held you and made you be in a comforting, familiar embrace.
You looked up to see Aether running towards the cliff to finally jump, open his gliding set and take you two away from the icy monster.
You didn't say a word to each other all this time.
As soon as you touched the ground, you stepped out of his embrace, as if feeling that you had abused his closeness too much. Instead, he grabbed your wrist, turned to face him, and initiated a long, passionate kiss.
He didn't pull away until you both were breathless, and your cheeks were burning like hot coals. You couldn't say you were cold anymore.
“Why?” He took a deep breath. However, his voice still trembled. “Why didn't you wait for me? If I did not make it on time—"
“I was waiting for you!” You interrupted him. You bit your lower lip as you tried to contain the tide of frustration. “It's you who disappeared somewhere. You went somewhere with that girl. I already thought you weren't coming back.”
Aether, an intelligent boy, immediately paraphrased your words "I was maybe jealous". At the thought, he smiled apologetically.
"Sorry," he said, scratching his neck. “I accidentally dropped a box on her leg and, oh, it was hard to treat someone who screams in pain before even a finger touches them…”
"Oh," you felt a deep flush of embarrassment coming up to your cheeks. Indeed, the previous redness of the cheeks did not disappear, but now it only preserved their shade for the next minutes. “I'm really sorry. I left you, put you and myself in danger, just to find some stupid flowers...”
For the third time since finding you, Aether hugged you tightly. He planted a kiss on the top of your head. You stood for a few minutes in pleasant silence, cuddling tightly to each other, and finally, you both relaxed completely.
You took the tangled lilies out of your pocket; one was practically worn out, but the other seemed to be in good condition. You dropped the massacred one, and you tried to straighten the petals with your fingers.
"Turn around," you told him.
He did it without batting an eye. You ran your fingers through his hair and braided his plant into a braid.
Out of the corner of your eye, you thought yours, still artfully arranged, flashed a pleasant blue light as Aether examined his looks.
"It suits you," you said. You both decided to go back to Liyue and spend the rest of the night there. You held hands all the way back.
"You too," he replied. "We are complementing each other very nicely now with these flowers ...and also without them," he added with a smile.
"So, you still think getting lost isn't romantic?" You looked at him from under your lashes.
“Still. I wish I could have you with me without any excuse that you will get lost.”

Bookstore Meetings pt.2 (Neil Perry x Reader)
requested by @hyperactiveravenclaw
summary: part 2 to bookstore meetings, you go on your date with Neil Perry at a local diner.
You hadn’t stopped thinking about the gorgeous Neil Perry since you had met that day in the book store. He was hard to forget, especially when you were going to see him in only a few short days. Unfortunately, the excitement of seeing him again wore down into nerves as the Horus ticked by and the days seemed to take longer and longer just to punish you.
Every once in a while you would catch a break from the nerves, successfully distracting yourself from your thoughts for a few hours as you got back into the swing of another week of school, but then his face would pop back into your mind, instigating a new rush of nerves that boiled up in your stomach. And the feeling only got worse the closer you got to the fateful day when you would get to see him again.
The morning of, you felt so nervous you thought you were going to be sick. You didn’t understand where these nerves were coming from. You hadn’t felt this way about seeing someone in a long while, but then came Neil Perry out of essentially nowhere.
You had to keep reminding yourself you were just going to the book store and you didn’t need to wear anything special, but the need to dress up get nagging you even after you settled on nothing more than a casual outfit in a similar sense of what you had on the previous weekend.
The weather wasn’t as nice that weekend, windier than the last weekend, but it didn’t bother you as you made your way to the book store. Like the previous weekend, the bell announced your arrival. You couldn’t see the man who ran the store, but you were sure he was somewhere in the maze of shelving.
You weren’t sure if Neil meant to just meet up at the book store in general or specifically where you had almost run into him the weekend prior. You didn't see him, so you wandered around, unconsciously making your way back to where you met the previous weekend. You were just reading the spine of some book when a voice interrupted you.
“I almost got lost trying to find this aisle again.”
You looked over at Neil. His brown hair was a little tousled, likely from the wind. “Hey.”
He smiled. “Hi.” He shuffled his feet. “Do you want to go grab a bite to eat? I don’t know where, so maybe you could show me your favourite place?”
You nodded. “Sure, there’s a diner just up the way. They serve breakfast all day.”
“Are you a waffles or pancakes kind of person?” Neil asked as he followed you out of the book store.
“Pancakes, what about you?”
He grinned. “I’d have to agree with pancakes.”
You walked down the street together, only a few centimetres apart. Your hands felt clammy and you both wanted to hold his hand and didn’t. It was agony.
You pointed at the diner. “This one.”
Neil smiled like a child. “This seems like a great place to have breakfast for lunch.”
“This is a lot less fancy than what you do at Welton isn’t it?” You furrowed your brow at him, starting to question your choice.
“No it’s not,” he replied. “But that’s what I like about it. Everything is overdone at Welton. This makes me feel like a normal teenager. I just wish I could feel like that all the time.” He bumped your shoulder with his. “Let’s go in.”
You entered the diner and were seated in a booth with red and white candy striped seats. Neil offered to take your coat off and hung it on one of the hooks by the booth.
Picking up the menu you inspected the options even though you knew you were going to order pancakes. You glanced at Neil from over the top of your menu. He was looking at his own menu, eyes flicking over the choices.
“Why don’t we share this?” You tapped the menu on an order of pancakes. “They’re pretty large pancakes and I can never finish them by myself.”
Neil dropped his menu on the table. “Sure.”
You ordered and shared your platter of pancakes drenched in syrup while you chatted about your lives, getting to know each other better. Neil told you about the play he was partaking in and invited you to a show even though it was two months in advance. It made you smile that he had already decided he was going to stay in touch with you long enough to see it. You talked long after the pancakes were gone and it saddened you that Neil had to go back to Welton shortly.
You exited the diner, Neil holding the door open for you. He walked next you as you headed roughly in the direction of his school. You didn’t think it was possible but he was somehow walking closer to you than before without touching you.
As you sauntered he grabbed your hand, lacing your fingers together. You dropped your gaze to your interlaced hands and smiled, looking up at Neil you saw him smiling too. The walk seemed much too short, but Neil had to go back to school.
“Next weekend same time?” he asked.
You smiled. “Sure.”
Neil bit his lip, stilling grinning and gave you a quick kiss on the cheek, so quick you weren’t sure if it had happened or not, and walked backwards away from you waving until he had to turn around so he wouldn’t hit anything.
Next weekend. You smiled to yourself. You couldn’t wait for next weekend.

Musings of an Alchemist’s Lover
Fandom: Genshin Impact Pairing: Albedo x Reader Summary: Maybe you had a third eye somewhere you didn't know of, a horn that's grown out of you without you noticing or a tail that flicks behind you whenever you weren't looking. Whatever it was, certainly there had to be something noticeably different about you that attracted the alchemist's attention and your curiosity allowed your mind to wander.
-----------
Holding Albedo's attention for more than a few seconds was no easy feat.
Unless it was a topic that tickled his fancy or something of utmost urgence, Albedo would most likely only regard the unfortunate soul with a disgruntled hum, tuning out most of their words until he manages to somewhat catch onto the main gist of their spiel. He doesn't even do anything to hide his disinterest, eyes immediately finding purchase on anything else but the speaker in front of them, musing theories to himself that he'd sometimes let slip into a whisper. This certain trait of his has definitely gotten him into trouble more than a couple of times but Albedo could hardly care. Surely discovering the world's secrets is more important than helping the Knights look for Margaret's lost cat for the umpteenth now right?
Despite being Mondstadt's favorite person and with a reputation that precedes him, Albedo was surprisingly anti-social. He had little to no regards for social interaction and this is further proved when he made himself a makeshift laboratory in one of Dragonspine's cave.
It was quiet, deserted and had almost everything he needed for his studies. If he ever ran out of supplies then he'd be able to call for either Sucrose or Timaeus - or go down the mountain himself to make sure he'll stock up with more than the amount he needs so he can hole himself up for a couple of weeks on end. The scenery was an added bonus, if the amount of sketches he's made was anything to go by, it was safe to say that Albedo liked it as well. Thick snow carpeted the floor as far as the eye can go and streams glimmered under the light of the morning sun. The air was crisp and chilly, it nipped at his nose and made his cheeks burn red, but his cave offered a comforting warmth once he's sank in front of the hearth, nursing a cup of tea or hot chocolate.
Albedo was many things, that much you could tell.
A genius, an alchemical prodigy, a leader, a brother - and most surprisingly, even to yourself - your lover.
To be fairly honest you weren't entirely sure what it was that attracted the Chief Alchemist of the Knights to your side. You were hardly anyone special after all, simply just one of Lisa's many acquaintances who spends one too many hours in the library. You were of average height and build, with a face that you could only describe as forgettable. Neither you nor your parents were well-known within the walls of the city of freedom and you lived a mostly mundane routinary life as a baker until Klee had bounded into your humble store one rainy evening, soaked to the bone and sneezing from the cold. The poor thing was shivering and had asked to take shelter from the pouring rain. You didn't have the heart to turn her away and you were more than just a little familiar about the stories of Mond's most adorable but destructive spark knight. You allowed her into your home, giving her a fresh towel to pat herself dry and a cup of hot milk and freshly baked cookies. The child bounced in glee, thanking you and happily accepting the treats with a smile that could part the skies to make way for the rays of sun. You allowed her to phone her guardian after she had finished eating and you kept her company throughout the entire wait. You turned your attention away from Klee the moment the store bell rang and your (e/c) eyes had immediately met with bright turquoise irises.
"Thank you for taking care of her." Albedo said as he knelt down to assist Klee with wearing her infamous bright red coat and adjusted her mushroom hat so it sat snugly atop her head.
"It's no problem at all, she was lovely company. I'd be delighted to have her around again every once in a while." You chuckled, remembering how she had praised the treats you made for her.
"Albedo onii-chan Albedo onii-chan!" The spark knight excitedly exclaimed, tugging on his hand with each call of his name. "______ makes the best sweets! Her cookies are really good and the bread she makes are really fluffy! She let me help her mix the dough earlier and-"
"How about you tell me all about it when we get home Klee? It's late and I'm sure ______ has to close up shop soon."
Klee deflated a bit but was quick to understand, she turned to you immediately after and flashed you another bright smile.
"Thank you for today ______ nee-chan, Klee will come back to visit another time!"
You smiled at her enthusiasm and you couldn't resist the urge to pat her on the head.
"I'll be waiting for you here then."
Albedo stood up after the exchange and finally regarded you with his attention. "We'll be off then, have a lovely evening miss ______."
"And to you too sir Kreideprinz."
You watch them walk off down the cobbled street, Klee's joyous laughter and excited chatter filling the air despite the pattering of rain against your roof. They took a turn around the corner and disappeared from your view. A small smile tugs on your features and you immediately set to work with locking up the store for the night.
Klee had started coming over more often after that night, mostly dropping by before you close while she waited for Albedo to finish work. It was no surprise that Klee often talked fondly about her big brother, praising him and telling you stories you haven't heard from any of the other residents of Mond while you prepared for tomorrow's next batch of goods. Albedo seemed like a very busy man from the way Klee tells her stories but he always seemed to make time to pick her up, oftentimes buying some bread and sweets before leaving.
It surprised you a little when he admitted he enjoyed having something sweet while he worked. Albedo insisted that it was because it gave him a considerable boost of energy but a part of you thinks it could just be because he had a sweet tooth he just wasn't aware of.
Needless to say it was due to that chance encounter with Klee that had allowed you to meet the chief alchemist himself and your relationship had only continued to bloom from there.
He was - in simple terms - wonderful.
An eccentric, true, but wonderful nonetheless and you never would have guessed that you'd ever end up as his lover nor did you ever imagine you'd be holding him in your arms, sleep slowly overtaking him as you gently ran your fingers through soft platinum locks - much like the lazy morning you were both sharing right now.
Albedo had come home at almost 3 in the morning the other night, with a throbbing headache and eyes that almost refused to open from drowse. He had pulled all-nighters for several days now, refusing to leave his lab for even a moment as he fully threw himself into his work. Nothing could ever stop him when he was in such a state, filled with elation at the mere prospect of a new discovery. It was a side of him that you admired as much as you found it problematic, it was amazing how he could wholly dedicate all his time, effort and energy towards his research but it was a definitely a point of worry that he'd also forget how to take care of himself. The alchemist immediately headed to your shared bedroom, dragging his feet across the floor while he shed himself of his coat, letting out a long yawn before heaving himself onto the mattress' soft comfort. You stirred from your sleep as the bed dipped and knowing it couldn't possibly be anyone else other than Albedo, you immediately rolled to your side and wrapped your arms around his middle, nuzzling into his warmth as his arms found themselves around you to return your embrace. There was an exchange of sleepy mumbles before you both immediately fell back into sleep.
You smile a little bit at the memory, humming softly as you continue to softly card your fingers through his hair. It was more than just a little past the time you both usually woke, but you'll allow it for now. Surely the people could wait a couple hours more for their morning bread and the knights can surely make do without the Chief Alchemist for a moment longer. So long as Albedo was getting the rest he needed you figured a lazy morning in would be alright every once in a while especially after the sleepless hectic nights he had the past few days. The peaceful expression on his face immediately filled you with relief.
"Albedo?" You whispered, afraid you'd break the serenity of the morning.
The alchemist responded with a sleepy hum, lifting his head so he could look at you as his long lashes fluttered open.
A smile tugged at your lips at his sleepy visage before you gently pressed a kiss on his forehead.
"I love you."
He gives you a sleepy smile of his own, heart swelling at the affection before nuzzling back into the crook of your neck.
"I love you too."
His lips brushed against your pulse as he spoke and his breath tickled against your skin, feeling a little playful, you then decided to ask.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"But why?"
A question you've always been meaning to ask, brought about by a sudden spur of confidence.
"Because meine liebe," Albedo starts, once again pulling himself away from your warmth to hold you with his gaze - you once again think to yourself that his eyes has the most beautiful shade of green - "I love you simply because you are you."
"You're certain it's not because I have a third eye hidden away somewhere or some freaky mutation I somehow have no knowledge of?"
Albedo chuckled lightly.
"Certainly not love, and I'm sure if you do I wouldn't be the only one to take notice of it."
You hum, convinced and resumed patting his hair.
The alchemist assumed his earlier position and sank further into your embrace.
"Besides," he murmured, sleep lacing his words,
.
.
.
"I think you're wonderful just the way you are."

as the world caves in | ch. 7 | bucky barnes x reader
synopsis: You are a ghost story. A former Air Force pilot who had her plane shot down by Germany in 1945, but here you were in 2023, alive and frozen in your 25-year-old body.
You haven’t seen Bucky since the 1940’s, before his fall, before you went on a suicide mission only to come back alive. You aren’t sure reliving those memories – and being a living memory of everything the man has lost – is the best for him.
But you and Bucky won’t be apart for long.
This will loosely follow the plot of TFATWS - so spoilers ahead, specially regarding episode five. Thread carefully!
masterlist | AO3
notes: i got wordy with this one, lol. But there IS fluff and revelations in there somewhere
(warnings: mentions of death, blood, injuries, weapons) (word count: 5K)
seven: timing
You’ve seen death before. It’s inevitable, when you’ve lived an entire century.
You’ve died before, when half of the universe did too, crumbling into dust and fading into thin air. You’ve seen it during the war, during missions, you’ve done it. Yet, you might never get used to it, not like this.
A shield is objectively a protector in nature. Captain America’s shield, once the symbol of salvation, had been tarnished with blood.
Bucky and Sam looked at you when you turned back to them, after watching John Walker ran off from the square. Their silent conversation from seconds before communicated to you through a look.
Walker couldn’t carry the shield. Not anymore.
“We have to take it back.” Sam said, and you and Bucky nodded at the same time.
“He has to have gotten his hands on the serum somehow. He’s too strong.” You made your way through the crowd hastily, having to shove people out of the way, everyone still in slow motion due to shock.
“That means it won’t be easy.” Bucky added as the streets had gotten empty enough for you to start running freely.
“It never is, is it?”
Sam led the way on air while you and Bucky ran, following his coordinates. A fine rain fell over Riga, and it did good of seeping through your hair and clothes, though you didn’t register the cold in the moment. The warehouse you ended up in was empty except for industrial lifts, the lot abandoned and overgrown. A good enough hiding place.
John Walker marched over to you somewhat casually, and your eyes met Bucky’s as Sam stroke up conversation.
“What? You saw what happened. You know what I had to do. I killed him because I had to!” You held yourself from flinching when he raised his voice. “He killed Lemar!”
“He didn’t kill Lemar, John.” Bucky said calmly. “Don’t go down that road. Believe me, it doesn’t end well.”
Your fingers brushed Bucky’s metal ones lightly, them twitching in response.
“I’m not like you.”
That much was right. Sam stepped forward to try and reason with him, you and Bucky staying behind.
“Bucky—” You whispered, urging him to look at you.
He offered you a small strained smile. “I know.”
“Okay. Good.” This time you linked your hands fully, icy skin on Vibranium. You squeezed for a second and let go, forgetting that it probably wasn’t bringing him the comfort you intended. You hoped the message got across, at least.
“We don’t want anyone else to get hurt.” Sam’s voice drew your attention back to Walker and the imminent conflict. “John… You gotta give me the shield, man.”
Walker looked up at you three, a smirk gaining on his face. “Oh, so that’s what this is. You almost got me.”
“You made a mistake.”
“Don’t make another.” You said, your brows furrowing.
“You don’t wanna do this.”
“Yeah, we do.”
When Bucky said that he, you and Sam advanced into Walker, surrounding him as he swung the shield in every direction.
He lunged at Sam, sending him to ground. You were smaller, but that got you to land punches at his side and ribs, which he blocked a few of. You wondered how much more he could take, one against three.
A kick to your abdomen launched you back. He was terrifyingly strong, and you think that this serum had to be the most advanced yet. On top of that, he was completely deranged.
You helped Sam up while Bucky kept Walker occupied, then using the fact that Walker had him pinned against a lift you ran behind him and landed a knee to his spine.
“Why are you making me do this!” Walker flung Bucky first, and your eyes widened in horror when he crashed violently into a metal pillar. You were second, the shield hitting your head and flinging you towards the same direction as Bucky, your body sliding on the concrete floor.
Spots swam before your eyes. You blinked once, twice, trying to get them to focus again. You felt warmth on the side of your head. Blood.
Bucky was still limp on the ground, his metal arm sparking and twitching wildly. Your breath hitched in your throat and your eyes started to fill with water and fear.
“Bucky? Buck—oh my god, Bucky, come on,” Still dazed, you held his face in your hands, watching it twitch along with his arm.
You looked up to Sam altercating with Walker and Bucky stirred in your grasp.
“Y/N.”
A relieved sigh escaped your lips, along with a couple of hot tears that Bucky caught with his flesh hand. “Y/N, the shield—”
Looking up again, you saw what Bucky meant. The shield, seemingly forgotten as Sam and John Walker scuffled on the ground. You ran to it, swaying slightly, and stomped on the edge so it would go up into your arm.
As Walker ripped Sam’s wings out you flung the shield at his back, it flying back to your arm like a boomerang. You had his attention. He ran at you, nearly howling, and you stopped his lunges using the shield.
“You. You’re strong. You’re a super soldier too.”
“I have been… since 1945.” You panted, trying to catch your breath. Walker frowned at you.
You went at him again, not giving him time to process the new information. He grabbed the shield, trying to wrestle it out of your arm. Bucky tackled him before you could crumble, but as they stumbled down and away from you so did the shield, John Walker’s hands still gripping is viciously.
Somehow, he managed to have it strapped to his arm again, hitting Bucky with it as they threw punches.
You and Sam reached them at the same time, one to each side of Walker, taking him off of Bucky. Sam moved to remove the shield from Walker as you and Bucky pinned him.
There was a crack.
Sam took the shield off, rolling away with it, and you let go of Walker when you felt he stopped resisting due to the pain. Bucky spat red, and you cleaned the blood off your face with your sleeve.
Your head was throbbing, and you felt your balance wavering once again.
“It’s mine.”
“It’s over John.”
You tried jogging to Sam’s side, but all you did was limp the quickest you could. Suddenly, your knee was in fiery pain again. You would probably need a new replacement soon.
“It’s mine!” Walker moved on Bucky who was closest. You took a step toward them, but Sam put a hand on your shoulder to stop you.
“He’s got it.”
You turned to him, wondering if you really looked that much in bad shape.
Bucky really did get him, tackling Walker and hurling his body against Sam and the shield. The three of them fell to the ground.
It was over. You finally let your knees buckle, wincing once they hit the floor.
You closed your eyes for a brief second, spots swimming in your vision, and once you opened them again the men were still heaving on the ground. Bucky was the first to get up, picking up the shield and dumping it next to Sam.
He walked over to you, offering his hand. You took it gladly and let him hoist you up. His deeply concerned expression was the same as yours.
“Hey.”
“Hey, Buck.”
He pressed a kiss to your forehead. “Let’s go clean up, sugar.”
--
A shower and your clean civilian clothes got you feeling good as new.
You ended up going back to Zemo’s place, Bucky making you answer too many pointless questions as the both of you tended to your injuries, even though you had assured him you did not have a concussion.
“How’s your knee?”
“Could be better. It’ll be fine, though. I just hope we don’t have to fight Walker or anyone again in the next few days.” You shrugged, pressing an antiseptic tissue to Bucky’s nose. He hissed. “Don’t be a baby.”
You chuckled when he glared at you, slumping his shoulders.
His jaw tensed. “We wouldn’t have fought if Sam—”
“Bucky, don’t start this again—”
“— hadn’t given up the shield!”
“James, none of what happened was his fault. Did you even try to understand his side of things?”
You threw the tissue in the bin and checked your phone. Sam had replied, confirming that he was okay, and that he had managed to find a ride home with a friend. You and Bucky weren’t going just yet, since you still had to find Zemo and give him to the Dora Milaje.
You sighed. “The shield is just an oversized Vibranium frisbee. It’s nothing without the right person behind it.”
Bucky shook his head. “Why are you defending him?”
“Because you aren’t. You should be the first to take Sam’s side.”
“He gave it away like it was nothing. This Vibranium frisbee it’s all we have left of Steve, Y/N!”
“Not it’s not. We have an entire life worth of Steve, Bucky. The shield is just… an object.”
“If Sam was Captain America, Walker wouldn’t even have been nominated.” He grumbled.
You sat beside Bucky and took his metal hand in yours, tracing the golden seams on his palm. He sighed, and you knew he was close to resigning.
“The government didn’t even consider Sam before nominating Walker. Hell, they didn’t even talk to him.” You pursed your lips, feeling Bucky’s eyes on you.
“How can he be Captain America if America’s gonna treat him like that? And it wasn’t a one-time thing, either. So, I get it. I don’t like how things turned out. But I get it.”
Bucky looked at the floor. “Yeah. I want to understand. I’m—I’m trying.”
You beamed at him. It had taken you a while to understand too, and you still struggled sometimes. But you were proud of Bucky, for at least being open to listen.
--
You met Sam the next morning at the displacement camp. Or, at least, where it had been. Sam explained that the GRC was conducting raids in search for Karli, arresting people and closing their lodgings, but without much success.
“They searched this camp and just like the last camp, nothing.”
“Well, she’ll be laying extra low after…everything.” You frowned at Sam’s old gear, wings now a broken mess of carbon fiber and wires.
“She’s gone. We’ll never find her.” Sam’s voice was grave and littered with anxiety.
“We will. She’ll move again. She won’t just stop.”
You looked at Sam and he shook his head. From the other side of the room, Bucky sighed.
“Hey, you uh, you got your sleeve back.” A new voice piped in, and you recognized its owner as the soldier from the hangar the other day. “Oh, it’s you—hi, I’m Torres. Joaquin Torres.”
The boy had a nice, gentle smile. No wonder he and Sam were friends.
“Y/N.” You smiled back at him and shook the hand he extended to you.
Bucky headed to the door without a word.
“Are you off to take care of Zemo?”
You nodded at Sam and gave him a quick hug. “He can’t be running around causing trouble, can he now? Take care, Sam.”
“You too.”
“Alright, good to know you survived.” Torres said at Bucky’s back as he disappeared through the door.
Sam smiled down at you and you let yourself be content with that for now. You still had Zemo to worry about, so you rushed to catch up with Bucky.
“So, I’m thinking we should go to—”
“I have intel he might be in Sokovia.” Bucky shot you a confused look that made you shrug. “You forget I was a spy for more than 40 years, Buck.”
You smirked a little. Retired, sure. But that kind of thing was like riding a bike, and you knew better than to drop all of your hard-earned contacts.
“Did you contact Ayo too?”
You shook your head, and started leading Bucky to the hangar where your plane was waiting. “No, I figured you might wanna do that.”
It was another good fifteen minutes of walking before you arrived, and there it was. Your baby. An Eclipse 500, a pretty little thing with a red stripe and caramel leather seats.
Bucky whistled. “When you said you flew in…”
“I flew in.”
You smiled brightly at Bucky once you were on air, and it was safe to hit the autopilot. “Isn’t she beautiful?”
Bucky chuckled, looking at you. “Yeah.” His smile widened as he turned to watch the nose of the jet cutting the clouds.
Your chest ached with something unwelcome. Oh no. Not this, and not again. You wished for the feeling to go away, so you could just love him as your best friend, as a brother – but your heart wasn’t keen on listening.
“Sometimes it’s hard to remember you’re not that tiny, spunky girl who picked too many fights.”
“Well, that little girl is still in here somewhere. Except now I could say I have a bigger chance of winning those fights.”
Bucky smiled. “You always had a mean right hook.”
He was looking at you in some sort of way you couldn’t exactly determine and you decided not to think too much about it. You couldn’t.
“And now, what? You work for the UN, you have an airplane—you still live in New York, right?”
That was the moment when, after all that you’ve been through the past days, you realized that you and Bucky haven’t had a chance to actually catch up with each other. Everything had been a blur of conflict and stress, and although you knew most of what had been going on in Bucky’s life through Steve, Bucky knew virtually nothing about yours.
“I do, actually—do you remember those rowhouses in Columbia Heights?”
Bucky knitted his eyebrows. “The ones with the… sculpted flowers on the doorway?”
“Yeah. I bought one of them in the 60’s.” You grinned.
“We used to say that we’d live there, remember? Make it big, you, me and Steve.”
You nodded. It was one of the silly things you held on to – your dreamhouse, back when you had no idea that either Bucky or Steve were still alive. Back then, your house made you feel like you had fulfilled some sort of promise. The iron fences and the flowerbeds made you feel less alone in the world.
And then Steve came back. And then Bucky. And now Bucky was back in your life, and Steve was gone. Your eyes watered every time you thought of him.
“I remember, yeah. Gosh, I miss him.” You wiped the corner of your eye.
Bucky nodded, his eyes downcast. “I do too. I guess—guess that’s why I was so hung up on Sam giving up the shield. But you were right.”
“Oh? That’s new.”
“Shut up.” Bucky chuckled. “I’ve been thinking… and I still don’t fully understand. But Sam deserves at least an apology.”
You gave Bucky one last look before turning off the autopilot. What he was saying – that he was willing to understand Sam’s choices, and apologize – made your heart swell.
“Oh my, pigs might fly today!” When Bucky let out a tired exhale, you giggled. “I’m proud of you, Bucky. Really.”
He watched you for a long time while you brought the jet down to Sokovian grounds.
Bucky had gone off to change into new clothes before the two of you headed to find Zemo at the memorial. At least, that’s where he had been seen most recently. You had stayed to speak to the manager of the small airport you had landed in, the jet needed to be fueled and stationed somewhere before you headed back to the US.
“Alright, they’ll take care of her until we—”
You rounded the nose of your jet and faced with Bucky in a well-tailored black coat, his hair was styled and he’d shaven too, now only a faint stubble darkening his jawline. He cleaned up well, to say the least. Your heart skipped a couple of beats.
“—why, don’t you look dapper.”
Bucky smiled. “Have you seen Zemo in that coat of his?”
You laughed. “Alright, hold on a minute now.”
When you returned to him, you wore heeled ankle boots, a dark skirt and a silk blouse, all over your trench coat. Bucky’s Adam’s apple bobbled up and down as he took you in and you twirled, smiling sheepishly.
He offered you an arm.
“Come on, sugar.”
Sokovia was barren land now, most of the old city had gone up in the air, leaving a round crater in its place. There had been some rebuilding efforts, but everything was still quiet and empty. The memorial was right at the center, and as you and Bucky approached you saw him.
Zemo stood with his back to you, in that familiar overcoat, reading the inscriptions on the marble. You wondered if he had been waiting.
Bucky stopped walking, turning to you. “Ayo’s already here. She and the Dora will be waiting for my signal.” He took your hand. “Wanna come with me?”
“Do you need me?”
“I… should probably do this alone.”
You patted his hand with your free one before letting go. You drew a heavy breath when Bucky took out a pistol, then smiled when he emptied the bullets on his metal palm.
He raised his irises at you, a small frown making its way on his brow. “You said you were proud of me?”
You gave him a reassuring nod. “Always. I’ll be here.”
All you could do was watch now that Bucky was making the rest of the way to Zemo. If the Dora were watching somewhere, Bucky was probably safe, but you couldn’t keep your chest from constricting in apprehension as you watched him and Zemo interact.
Bucky raised the gun with his flesh hand, and with the other he dropped the bullets on the ground. That was the signal. The Dora Milaje came from behind Zemo, and Bucky looked over at you.
When they start walking off, leaving Bucky and Ayo behind, you approached.
“We will take him to the Raft, where he will live out his days.” Ayo said, greeting you with her dark eyes as you took place at Bucky’s side. “It would be prudent to make yourself scarce in Wakanda for the time being, White Wolf.”
“Fair enough.”
“And I hope to see you soon, Y/N.”
You and Ayo smiled at each other. “Same to you.”
Bucky gaped at you, and you had to stifle a laugh.
“Hey!” He called Ayo again. “I may have another favor to ask of you.”
You looked at him quizzically, and he smirked before closing the distance between him and the Dora Milaje, discussing something before walking back to you.
“It will be waiting for you once you get there.” She announced, and turned away. You raised an eyebrow.
“What is it?”
“Something for Sam.” Bucky said, wrapping an arm around your shoulders. You couldn’t help but lean into his warmth, and pulled him a little closer.
“How mysterious. Are we paying the Wilsons a visit, then?”
--
Delacroix was a close-knit community just south of New Orleans. It was sunny the day you and Bucky arrived, so much so that you’re able to ditch the heavy coats– you, at least, because Bucky had run back to get his jacket.
You didn’t mind much, that arm was a dead giveaway, and what truly mattered was him being comfortable – but you smiled once you noticed he didn’t have his gloves on.
You let Bucky go ahead and give Sam the favor he had asked of Wakanda by himself, despite his pleads for moral support. You figured it was a peace offering, and that being the case Bucky should deliver it himself.
When you finally approached them, greeting probably Sam’s sister Sarah with a smile, Bucky was busy tightening a pipe.
“Why didn’t you use the metal arm?”
“Well, I—I don’t always think of it immediately.”
“He’s right handed.” You quipped from behind them. Sam turned to you in surprise.
“Hey! I was wondering if I would have to deal with his grumpy ass without you.” He wrapped you in a hug and you laughed against his arm.
You smiled when Bucky rolled his eyes. “He’s actually in a good mood today.”
Bucky cleared his throat.
“So this is the boat, huh?”
“This is it.”
“It’s nice.” Bucky was looking around, rocking in his heels. “Want any help?”
Sam raised an eyebrow at you, and you simply shrugged.
“He was pretty handy in our time.”
Sam studied Bucky for a good two minutes in complete silence. Then, he relented, nodding and walking to the front of the boat.
Bucky stayed behind, looking up at Sam’s sister. “I’m Bucky.”
“Ah. Sarah.”
You raised your eyebrows once you realized just what he was doing. The sly dog. 106 years and he was still the biggest flirt to ever walk the earth.
You rushed to ignore the slight pang of jealously that hit you. You were debating following them when Sarah extended a hand to you.
“You must be Y/N. Thank you for offering the safehouse to us.”
You shook her hand, thinking that you couldn’t really blame Bucky for flirting – she was really pretty. Hell, maybe you should be flirting too.
“It was the least I could do.” You smiled.
“Does he… do that often?” She asked, looking in the direction Bucky had disappeared to.
You’ve lost count of how many times you’ve heard that, from hopeful girls who wished for more than just a date and a dance with Bucky. But you weren’t in the 1940’s anymore, though, and you had a feeling that flirting wasn’t really something he did often now.
“I’ll guess, no?” You shrugged, and she shook her head. “Serious!”
“Okay, okay. You go, I won’t keep you anymore.” Sarah nudged you with her shoulder. “Nice to finally meet you, Y/N!” She said, walking away and waving.
“You too, Sarah!” You waved back.
Sam was inside the wheelhouse when you found him. He was fiddling with a bunch of wires that looked more like a plate of noodles than something that was supposed to power a machine.
“And what’s going on here?”
He huffed. “I can’t get the panel to turn back on. Are you any good at this?”
“Technically I only know my way around flying things. But I can try.” You waved your hand and he stepped to the side, allowing you to start sorting out through the wires and try to see what could be connecting to what.
“You know, I think I like staring Bucky better than flirting Bucky.” Sam said in a serious tone, and you smirked.
“What a protective brother, you.”
“No, no—I’m a protective friend too. You made a face when Bucky started being all flirty with my sister.”
You furrowed your brows, looking at him. “No I didn’t.”
“Uh, yes you did.”
“Did not—” You sighed. “We’re just friends, Sam. Always have been. And that’s what we’ll continue to be.”
You connected a couple of wires and the panel flickered.
“Look. Even before I knew you two were a pair of old relics from the last century, I had a feeling you two would be good for each other.” Sam looked out of the window as Bucky walked by it, busy with scraping the paint off some wooden bitts. “And I am a great wingman.”
He winked at you, proud of his own pun, and you rolled your eyes.
“We are good for each other. Good friends. Best friends, if I may be so bold.”
The panel flickered again, then went out again. You groaned. You were so sure that would get it to work.
“It’s no use. Thing’s busted.”
“If I get it to power on, will you drop the cupid thing?” You stared at Sam with raised eyebrows, a challenge lingering in your eyes. He narrowed his, then turned to the panel.
“Deal.”
You tried again, this time joining a different set of wires, and the panel lit up. And stayed.
You smirked. “All done!”
“No no no, no— you set me up! Deal’s off! You tricked me!”
“No dealing off! You’re welcome!”
You laughed, exiting the wheelhouse and stepping into the warm sunshine. You spent the rest of your afternoon like this – helping Sam fix the boat, looking at the engine but still not getting it to work, scraping off paint and laughing at Sam and Bucky’s antics.
The sun had started to set when Sam called in for a break, offering you and Bucky a beer and a breather.
“What’s in the case?”
You raised your shoulders, just as in the dark about it as Sam was. “Dunno. It’s your gift, you’ll find out when you open it.”
“Well… gonna catch my flight tomorrow.” Bucky started, getting up and taking the last swig of his beer. “Get a hotel room for the night. Crash, you know?”
You knitted your eyebrows. Sam began chuckling. “So you’re just gonna set me up like that, huh?”
“I don’t wanna make it weird for your family.”
You hid your face in your hands. So smooth, Bucky.
“Just stay here. The people in this town are the most welcoming people in the world. They don’t care if you wear small t-shirts or if you have six toes or if your mom’s your aunt.”
Sam trailed off, but Bucky chuckled, raising a hand to stop him. “Okay, I get it. I mean, you know, the people are nice.”
Sam started laughing and stopped himself quickly. “But don’t flirt with my sister. ‘Cause if you do I’ll have Carlos cut you up and feed you to the fish.” He deadpanned.
You snorted. Sam elbowed you in the ribs.
“Okay.”
“Alright boys, I should get going, though. I can fly myself out still tonight.”
“Ah ah—no, he’s not staying here if you aren’t. C’mon, Y/N.”
The two looked at you expectantly. You sighed.
“Fine. But I am leaving first thing in the morning. The GRC vote is soon, and I have not been benched.”
On the contrary, actually. You knew the bubble was about to burst and so did the government. They needed all the help they could get to keep things running well, with so many international representatives coming over to New York for the vote.
--
Sam’s family home was a cozy three-bedroom facing the water and surrounded by green. It was homey, and the minute you stepped inside you felt at ease.
It was a Wilson thing, really. The house only reflected it.
You and Sarah had hit it off quite well, becoming quick friends after bonding over being completely done with Sam and Bucky’s incessant banter. They even had a staring contest, like the children they were.
“So, Bucky doesn’t flirt often… because you are into each other.” She said playfully as you cleaned the dishes from the dinner.
Your jaw slacked. “What—he’s not. Sarah! We’ve been friends for so long, that’s all.”
“Oh, come on, I see the way he looks at you. And you look at him. Also, Sam told me—”
“Sam was supposed to drop that! I can’t believe he told you.” Actually, you could. You set a couple of glasses on the dish rack, groaning.
“Hey, he told me not to tell you! But I did anyways.”
You narrowed your eyes at her. “Enjoying the double agent life, huh?”
She laughed, and you went along with her.
“I just think you should tell him how you feel. Before Samuel tries to parent-trap you.”
You knew Sarah was probably right – You should know better than not telling him before it was actually too late. You should, and yet the words die in your throat every time you looked at him.
You were in love with Bucky Barnes again. There was no going around it, but as it turned out, you were a coward. You were a coward, because you needed him to know. He deserved to know too – but you didn’t want to scare him off. Not now, that things were finally good. You’ve come all this way, and you promised him you wouldn’t leave.
This longing – this love – was only going to be a huge problem.
“I can’t. I don’t want to mess things up.”
She sighed at you and turned around to put the dishes away. “So you do have feelings for him.”
You looked at her, your eyes wide. She smiled big.
“Maybe you should date him.” You raised your eyebrows and crinkled your nose as she turned back to you, hands on her hips.
“Ah—no, don’t drag me into this.” She swatted you with a dishcloth when you raised your hands in defeat. “Let’s find you a place to sleep, girl.”
After much insistence on your part, Sarah agreed to let you sleep on the couch instead of Sam’s bed. You didn’t want to strip them off their comforts, so you settled on the couch, and Bucky took a mattress and placed it next to you on the floor.
The setup is familiar. You’ve slept like this before, you on either the bed or the couch and Bucky on the floor. Only thing left was Steve, your third piece. You’ve been trying not to spend all of your time missing him, but quiet nights were especially hard.
You tossed and turned for a while until Bucky reached for your hand, another of those old habits that had been resurfacing ever since you two started spending time together. With your hand secure in his, you drive the grief away and let sleep take you.
--
You woke up with the sounds of two kids making their own fighting sound effects. The smaller had the shield on his arm. Maybe it wasn’t just metal, after all. Maybe it could be more.
Bucky watched them from his makeshift bed, a grin on his face. “Hey.”
You giggled as the boys hurried to put the shield back in its case and ran back further into the house, startled by Bucky’s voice. “They’re so sweet.”
“You ever wanted them? Kids, I mean.”
You’re caught by surprise by Bucky’s question. Taking a deep breath, you processed it, trying to find a good way to answer it.
“I did – still do, I guess. It was never the right time. Or the right person.”
You closed your eyes, thinking that your person was laying right under you, on a mattress on the floor.
Strange thing, timing – you were born in 1918, and spent most of your life believing that your time with Bucky had come and gone. Now you both were more than one hundred years old, living way past your time frame – perhaps completely different people than what you used to be, but together again nonetheless.
Timing wasn’t right then – you wondered if timing could be right now.
Opening your eyes, you glanced at the clock on the wall. It was early, still barely 6.
“I have to go.”
Bucky was sat up, looking at you with a little frown. “No breakfast?”
“Well, I don’t want to abuse Sarah’s welcome. I’ll get it on the way.”
Bucky got up with you, his eyes following you as you gathered your things and he folded the blankets you two used during the night. He followed you to the door, then out to the front lawn, then to the start of the road right at the edge of the property.
“Don’t forget to have that talk with Sam, okay?”
“Yeah. I won’t.” He looked back at the house, and then at you. “I’ll see ya’ back at the city?”
You hummed. “You know where to find me.”
Bucky pulled you in, kissing your head, and you hugged him back tightly. His heartbeat was strong and steady.
“Take care, sugar.”
“You too, Buck.”
You turned back twice as you were walking away, finding Bucky on the same spot the first time and making his way back to the house on the second. Your eyes met both times, and you had to keep yourself from running back.

A/n: Hey guys. Sorry for the wait. Life has been so busy as I just became a certified therapist and just life stuff in general. This is just going to be a mini fic for fun while I work on writing my next big one- which will be for Cordelia! Literally nothing like Run to Me, so I hope you don’t find it disappointing. Just a little filler while I work out the plot for my next story!
You pulled out your phone, checking the time. 1:53 PM. Your interview was at 2 o'clock and if you didn't figure out where you were quickly, you were going to be late. You walked faster, panic dialing your best friend who had gotten you the interview.
"Hello?" the sweet voice chimed on the other end.
"Sarah! Help! I'm lost," you pleaded, looking at the address on the piece of paper in your hand and trying to match it to the towering houses around you.
"How did you get lost? I gave you the exact address. Did the driver put it in wrong?"
"No. I made the Uber drop me off at the entrance to the neighborhood because his car looked super sketch and I didn't want the mom to see me step out of a car that looks like it was used in a 70's porn film. I started walking and I got lost."
You heard Sarah shuffling around in the background, and what sounded like the tapping of keys.
"Okay, give me the address for the closest house," she said. Your best friend was a life saver.
"Uhhh... 768 Elm Street," you told her, trying not to look suspicious in this wealthy neighborhood.
"Hmmm. Okay you're literally two streets over. If you go to the end of this street, take a right and walk less than two blocks. You'll make it to maple from there. You somehow managed to be right behind her house. It will take you about ten minutes."
Shit.
"No! There has got to be a quicker way! I am going to be late!" You whined, stomping your feet on the sidewalk in frustration.
"Yeah, Tammy is not going to like that. She is very patient but she's got three kids so she really only has enough patience for them. Well wait, hang on a second."
"What? Did you find a quicker route?"
"Sorta. You should have just stayed in the Uber."
"Sarah I did not want to pull up like Will Smith from the Fresh Prince of Belaire, now spit it out already!"
"Well that house you are standing in front of? Technically if you could find a way into their backyard and through the trees... you could get to Tammy's house in half the time."
You looked at the house in front of you. It looked more like a post office than a home. Large marble columns, real gas lamps framing a shiny oak door, and a second floor balcony that seemed larger than Sarah's whole apartment. This is not the type of property you just meandered around on, but this job was also not the type of opportunity you just let slip away by being two minutes late.
You walked a little to the side of the house, and there you found your favorite thing of the whole house: A gate to the backyard.
"I'm gonna do it," you say to Sarah, who had been quiet this entire time.
There was more silence, before you heard your best friend draw in a breath.
"Don't get arrested please. Call me when you're done, or in lock up. Either way, be safe."
Sarah had always been someone who just supported and loved you no matter what. Whether it was moving on a whim to another city and crashing on her couch indefinitely or trespassing through a rich family's yard to get the job that would help you get started on your dreams. She was that type of friend and you loved her for it.
You didn't even say goodbye as you hung up and checked the time again. 1:55 PM mocked you on the screen. You shoved the phone in your pocket before quickly looking around. No one was out and about thankfully probably due to the heat picking up, so you walked briskly over to the gate.
You said a prayer and begged the universe to be kind to you under your breath as you forced yourself to find the courage and flung open the lock to the gate, letting it swing open. You looked around the yard really quickly to find it empty as well. Maybe this wouldn't be hard at all.
You closed the gate behind you and you quickly jogged into the yard. There was a picnic table close to the other side of the fence and you would be able to hop right over! You breathed a sigh of relief because everything was going to plan, until the dog.
A ear piecing yap began sounding through the yard like an obnoxious security alarm. You turned and saw that the back of the home was basically one big window and there inside was the ugliest looking purse dog you had ever seen, notifying every living creature with working ears within a mile of your presence.
You watched horrified as the owner of said ugly dog appeared in the view of the window like some horror movie on a tv screen. An older woman, dressed as if she had been in the middle of a workout, was also now yapping at you angrily and making her way to her giant window wall.
Your feet started moving before you realized what was happening and you bolted to the back of the yard and onto the picnic table, jumping and throwing one of your legs over the fence. The little old woman made it to a sliding glass door, releasing her dog and profanities towards you.
The dog tore across the lawn, but thankfully was no actual threat. You looked at the woman as you threw your other leg over the fence.
"I'm not a criminal! I'm sorry! I just got lost on the way to a job interview. You have a nice home!" you yelled, trying to prove to this stranger you were not bad, just had poor execution of your ideas. You dropped over the other side of the fence and into the wooded area behind the home, running as fast as your feet could carry you from the angry woman and her angrier dog.
It only took you about a minute of running full force to make it to another fence, a fence you were praying was Tammy's. You ran around the length of it, following it to the front of the house. You shakily pulled out the paper from your pocket and checked the address. You had made it. This was the house. You laughed, more relieved than anything, and jogged to the front door.
You knocked and weren't even able to take a full breath before the door opened.
There before you stood the most beautiful woman you had ever laid your eyes on. Her hair was the color of sand on the beaches of heaven its self and her eyes looked like brownies fresh from the over, and you had the strange thought of wanting to burn your mouth on them.
Y/n, that's weird. Stop it.
You stared at her, trying not to look to heavily at her gorgeous smile at the fear she may think you were looking at her lips. Even though you kind of were. You forced yourself to smile back.
"You must be Y/n," she said, looking at her watch, "and you are right on time. Let it be known I find that super attractive."
You chuckle nervously, unable to process a coherent thought. You really just hoped she couldn't tell you had just ran through the woods to stand stupid on her doorstep. Thankfully it didn't seem like she did and stepped aside, letting you in.
The home was gorgeous and lavish, but also homey and seemed lived in. You could hear the distant laughter of children somewhere in the house and portraits of what you could only assume were those children hung on the walls. You did notice though that there was a lack of family portraits probably due to the husband no longer being in the picture.
Sarah had filled you in a little bit about the family situation. She had worked with them over the summer and was working for them when they filed for divorce. Supposedly neither of them seemed upset by it, but he had still decided to move into another town. Tammy supposedly worked a very busy job and with three rambunctious kids, help was needed. Sarah had helped them occasionally, but Tammy needed something more permanent and hopefully that's where you would come in.
You followed Tammy into a big open kitchen and sat down with her at the kitchen table.
"Can I offer you some tea or water?" she said sweetly.
Even though you were parched from the mini marathon you had just ran, you politely declined. You pulled your resume out of your bag and put it on the table. Tammy reached over and took it, looking at it before smiling back up at you.
"I know Sarah said you had just moved here, so what brought you to town?" Tammy asked.
You hoped the look of confusion was not obvious on your face because you were expecting only questions about the job. You were unsure how useful you would be talking about yourself right now.
"Uh, well I came to town for a fresh start, and with Sarah here, it just seemed like the best place to restart."
"Running from something?" Tammy asked, putting down the resume and taking a sip of something in a mug that had been sitting on the table.
"N-no ma'am. Nothing illegal. I am not a criminal. I told the old lady the same thing," you stuttered.
Tammy raised her eyebrow at the last part, but you kept going to breeze over it hopefully.
"I just- I got my heartbroken and got kicked out of the apartment we shared. I didn't feel like I was making anything of my life where I was and I have such big dreams, but all I found there was pain and complacency, so I came here in hope to change that."
You voice sounded small and you ringed your hands in your lap, nervous that you may have said too much. Tammy's face softened even more somehow though and she smiled at you over the edge of her mug. She stared at you for a moment, her eyes seeming to sparkle. She nodded and looked down at your resume again.
"Well, you certainly have quite an impressive track record here. You seem like a kid expert. And because I already did a background check on you, I feel comfortable saying, if you would like the job its yours."
You sat there at the table, now not trying to hide the stunned look on your face. You had a harder time getting over the fence than getting employed by this woman.
"That's it? You don't need to ask me anything else? You're giving me the job?" you ask, stumbling over your words.
Tammy laughs and it feels like butterflies flutter in your belly. You like to make her laugh, but you aren't sure if she think's you're funny or stupid.
"With my life and my job, Y/n, the thing that is most important to me is being able to trust you. With my kids, my day to day life, and if I need your help with something. Trust and honesty go a long way with me, and you proved that with one question," she said, coming over to you with a glass of water.
You took it with a smile, forcing yourself to take a slow slip.
"Well, you can definitely trust me. And I'd be honored to by your nanny," you say, excitement and nervousness flowering inside your chest.
Tammy smiles sweetly at you.
"Consider yourself part of the family Y/n. Now you do know this is a live in position right? Sarah told you that?"
You nodded, that having been one of the main reasons you wanted the job. As much as you loved Sarah, you did not love sleeping on her couch. Being a live in nanny presented its own set of challenges, but it wouldn't be forever.
"Good. Can you move in today?"
You choked on your water, coughing and spitting it all over your shirt. Tammy laughed at you, and your cheeks burned red. Now you were embarrassed and Tammy sensed that.
"I'm sorry Y/n, I didn't mean to shock you. I just really need your help around here as soon as possible. And it would be better if you just came on in and got to know me and the kids since you're going to be a big part of our lives."
She handed you a paper towel, looking down at you with a comforting expression. Your cheeks burned red again, but not from embarrassment. You looked away and cleared your throat, unsure why you were so flustered.
"Sure. Yeah, no problem. I just need to run home and grab my clothes and things, but I don't have any furniture so-"
"Oh don't worry. You'll have the whole attic. Its renovated and fully furnished and you'll have your own bathroom. You don't need to worry about buying anything."
That was a relief. It would have taken you a while to afford those things.
You got up and walked with Tammy to the front door, her opening it for you.
"Thank you Ms. Tammy for hiring me, you will not regret it. I will take good care of your kids and make your life as easy as I possibly can," you say, brushing a piece of hair behind your ear, attempting to look confident and wanting to ensure Tammy she had made the right choice.
She chuckled again, putting a little hole in that confidence, but it was quickly repaired when she wrapped her arms around you. It shocked you and you stood there, frozen for a second before hugging her back.
"I know you will. You're going to be a wonderful addition to our lives, all of our lives," she said. Her voice had a hint of something in it, making it seem like silk, but then you felt her pulling on your hair a bit and you felt like your legs may fall out from under you. Who was this woman?
Before you could assume anything further though, she pulled back and revealed she had taken a small branch with green leaves from your hair. You laughed nervously. Tammy cocked an eyebrow at you and smiled cheekily, holding it up.
"That is a funny story... I can explain that. I promise I bathe."
It was Tammy who laughed this time thankfully. She nodded and played with the branch in between her long, manicured fingers.
"That's alright. You can tell me about it tonight over drinks once you are home. I'd like to get to know you better while we get you settled."
Something about the way she said it made your breath catch in your throat. She smiled at you and you two said your goodbyes. You would text her when you were on the way back home. How strange that felt.
You sat in a much cleaner Uber on the way back to Sarah's, your head pressed against the glass. You couldn't stop thinking about Tammy and it seemed like you also couldn't wipe the smile from your face either. It seemed almost like a dream.
Just then, your phone buzzed and you were pulled from the thoughts of the woman to see that her name was on your screen. You quickly held the phone up to unlock it, suddenly overcome with the need of answering her at a moments notice. Thankfully it was not a message of her changing her mind.
Btw, just call me Tammy. Ms. Tammy is a little formal ;)
You smiled and bit your lip, quickly responding.
Okay, Tammy :)

A somewhat late fic for @jonsimsandcats day.
Jon is a god of cats whose cat followers report that a beast has taken up residence in the wood outside of town and is causing trouble. Jon, unable to say no to helping cats agrees to get rid of this beast only to run into Martin, who is also searching for it.
Warnings for mild injuries to animals and people
—
Jon woke to find a pair of slitted eyes staring at him. It was not an unusual occurrence, he couldn’t go anywhere without the local cats greeting him, or letting him know of problems they were having. He was, after all, the god of cats. They were his followers and his messengers, and in return he gave them protection and knowledge. It was more unusual to not wake up with several cats sleeping on top of him. The tabby blinked slowly at Jon, he blinked back, and it settled on his lap, its fluffy tail swishing from side to side.
The building he’d fallen asleep in was technically a temple to him but humans rarely visited it so it had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was still a sanctuary for cats, they knew that within its walls they could be safe and warm while they slept, but the only other being that really came inside it was Jon. He tried to keep the fireplace lit in winter and set out bowls of fresh water, but there was only so much he could do. It wasn’t like he could fix the cracked windows and provide an unlimited supply of food, he just wasn’t that powerful.
The God of Cats and Curiosity was not a god people often prayed to, not until winter fell and mice invaded grain stores. Cat owners would occasionally set something on their mantle in offering to him, a saucer of milk or a piece of dried meat, but more often than not it was the cats themselves who honored him. He could understand what they said, and sometimes they were the only creatures he talked with for years. In a world where belief was what made a god strong it was a miracle he hadn’t faded away altogether.
“Hello, master,” a voice sounded inside Jon’s head as the cat purred. He stroked its ginger fur and it rubbed its head against his hand. “I have news from the others in town.”
“Oh?”
“They say a beast is lurking in the forest, it has already affected the supply of prey, and several cats who stumbled across it were wounded by it. If we cannot go hunt in the woods we won’t have enough food.” This was news to Jon, a beast in the forest? Not only was it killing animals it had hurt some of his followers, those he’d sworn to protect. His stomach churned at the thought of how they must have felt, had they prayed to him for help? Had he been too far away to hear them?
“Take me to them.” He started to get to his feet, the cat jumped off his lap as he straightened his clothes, making sure the hood of his blue cape covered his pointed ears completely. Despite being a god he couldn’t change his form, or hide the ears and tail that revealed what he was, so he relied on human clothes like skirts and hoods to disguise himself.
The tabby wound its way between his legs before heading towards the door, and Jon followed. The street was quiet, a few humans passed them but it seemed early enough in the day that a lot of them weren’t up. Turning down an alley he saw a pile of crates had been left in a niche and several cats had made themselves comfortable in it, there were even a few blankets and pillows. On one threadbare cushion lay a female tortoiseshell with cuts on her back, the wounds had scabbed over but dried blood streaked her fur and she couldn’t move without hurting.
“You poor thing.” Unwrapping the cloth belt from around his waist Jon dipped it into a dish of water someone had laid out nearby and began to dab at the cuts. The cat hissed, pupils narrowing into slits, but she didn’t scratch him. She knew who he was and what he was doing here. It took hardly any effort to soothe the tortoiseshell, to numb the pain as he cleaned her wounds. The last thing he wanted was to heal the cuts only to have her get sick because he hadn’t ensured they were dirt-free first.
“Thank you, master.” The tortoiseshell butted his hand with her head. “It is an honor to meet you.”
“There’s no need to thank me, I apologize for letting you get hurt in the first place.”
“That was not your fault, master. You could not have known the beast would start lurking in the forest.” The cat shook her head, her tail sticking straight up. “The world is a dangerous place, you cannot be everywhere, even if you are a god.”
Sighing, Jon nodded, his own tail flicking from side to side in agitation. She was right, but it still hurt to know that he could not protect all of his followers from harm. Despite being a god he wasn’t very powerful, people just didn’t pray to him enough. He could look through the eyes of other cats nearby and bless them with safety for a limited time, but his power was finite. Anything more than a league away from him was hard to sense, although it hadn’t always been that way. “I’m looking for the beast, would you mind telling me where you encountered it?”
“I can show you.” Getting to her feet the tortoiseshell stretched deeply.
“Lead the way.”
—————
The forest was dense, trees crowded tight together and thick grasses that made it hard to maneuver, if it wasn’t for the narrow footpath made by other travelers Jon would be miserable. A short distance ahead of him the tortoiseshell cat led the way, showing no sign that her earlier injuries were still paining her. Every so often sunlight would find some way through the thick canopy of branches overhead and illuminate their surroundings, although they both could see in the dark just fine. Jon wasn’t sure how long they’d been walking, but when huge pawprints had been practically gouged in the path he insisted the cat ride on his shoulders for the rest of the journey.
“What kind of animal is this beast?” Jon muttered, ihe tracks were bigger than his hand, and while they appeared to be made by some kind of dog they were far larger than most he’d seen. As they progressed Jon saw several trees with claw marks on them and he started to feel anxious. Sure, he was technically a god, but he’d never really been in a fight before. He wouldn’t necessarily die, not from physical wounds, and he did heal faster than the normal human but that didn’t mean he wanted to get hurt. He didn’t even have a weapon to defend himself.
Somewhere in the trees ahead of them a branch snapped, then another. Jon braced himself as he heard footsteps approaching him, growing faster and louder until he saw a huge brown thing burst out from behind a bush and race towards where he stood. It was all he could do to cast a simple protective spell on the cat and drop her on the ground before the thing knocked him over. His head hit hard-packed earth and the world went dark.
“-right?” A voice sounded from somewhere nearby, sounding concerned but Jon was in too much pain to register much more. He willed his body to heal itself, to reduce the swelling and stop his head from throbbing with every beat of his heart. Slowly, agonizingly slow, he found that he could open his eyes, although the world itself was a blur of green and black. “Hello? Can you hear me?”
Just as his eyes adjusted he saw a face staring down at him, their expression worried. A human? Sitting up so fast his head swam Jon checked to see that his hood was still in place. It had shifted somewhat when he fell, but his ears were thankfully still covered. The human had curly orange hair and a round, friendly face, although they still looked anxious. Next to them sat a dog, a huge fluffy thing, even sitting it came up to Jon’s chest, with light-brown fur everywhere but its face and ears, which were black. Was this the beast?
“Are you alright? Did he hurt you?” The human’s voice was high-pitched and laced with concern. Jon shook his head slightly, but winced as pain sparked behind his eyes.
“I’m fine.” Regardless of how worried this human was, Jon didn’t want them looking at him too closely, the last thing he needed was for them to find out just what he was. “What are you doing here?”
“Oh!” They looked surprised. “I was looking for my dog; they ran off and, well, it’s not like I can stop him if he wants to go somewhere.”
“You own this thing?”
“Well, I guess you could say that. His owners couldn’t take care of him because they had another baby on the way and...” The human trailed off, freckled cheeks flushing pink. “Anyway, I’ve taken in strays before so they felt comfortable giving him to me.”
Jon didn’t really care about where the dog came from, but looking at the size of its paws gave him an idea. “I’ve been told there’s some sort of beast attacking animals in the woods, and I found tracks and claw marks on the path-”
“It’s not him! I know what you’re talking about- I’ve had to take in a whole bunch of wounded animals recently- so I came out here to try and find this ‘beast’ too.” Their voice rose an octave, eyes widening with fear. “I brought Silas with me because I thought he could maybe track it somehow? I know he’s not really a hunting dog but still...”
“Has it?” He scanned the ground nearby and found the tortoiseshell cat hiding behind a tree just off the path. Kneeling down Jon held out a hand to her. “I’m sorry, darling. Are you alright?” The cat approached him cautiously, eyes darting to the dog every so often, and he scooped her up in his arms.
“What?”
“Has it tracked the beast?” It was hard to keep from rolling his eyes, Jon didn’t care much for rambling when he had something to do. He absentmindedly stroked the tortoiseshell’s head, trying to reassure it.
“N- No... I thought he had but he just found you.” The human gave a shy smile. “How do I know you’re not the beast?”
Jon stiffened, his ears flattening against his hair and his tail bristling. In his arms the cat hissed angrily. “Do you even know who you’re talking to?”
“Calm down, let me handle this.” It was clear this human had no idea they’d just insulted a god, but as much as Jon wanted to curse them for the accusation he was here for a different reason. “If you don’t have anything helpful to say then this is where we part.” He continued to comfort the cat as he pushed past them and continued on the path.
“W- Wait!” Glancing over his shoulder Jon saw the human was following him. “I mean, we both have the same goal, don’t we? We both want to find this beast and stop it from hurting the local animals. Why don’t we look for it together?”
“I can’t stop you from following me.” Jon sighed and tugged his hood farther forward. He had a feeling that he’d made the wrong decision, but he’d spoken the truth. Besides, this human was larger than he was, with them and the dog he might stand a chance against this beast.
They walked in silence for a while, but like all good things it didn’t last. “I just realized I never got your name; I’m Martin, Martin Blackwood.”
“Jon.” He didn’t feel much like talking, especially since he was trying to listen for any strange noises.
“Just... Just Jon?” The human- Martin- seemed dissatisfied at his answer.
“That’s all I’m willing to share with you.”
“Right, that’s fine,” A pause. “Are you a man?” When Jon glared at them Martin turned bright red. “It’s just, I don’t want to misgender you, that’s all. I’m a man, he/him pronouns.”
“I don’t really see the point of gender.” Jon sighed, pulling on his hood as his ears were flicking enough from irritation he feared it might fall down. “He/they, I guess.”
“Got it.” Martin was a few paces behind, his footsteps louder than Jon’s. “I’m guessing you’re also an animal lover, given that you’re also searching for this beast.” Jon wanted to scream, could this human not be quiet for five minutes?
“Yes, which is why I’m trying to track it. That being said, if it makes noise I will be unable to hear it because you keep talking.” Glancing over his shoulder Jon saw Martin stiffen, his cheeks still flushed from embarrassment. Thankfully he didn’t say anything though, and Jon could have cried from relief.
They continued on, neither of them making a sound as they trudged through the woods, occasionally the dog would run ahead and sniff at a tree or patch of earth but thankfully it didn’t bark. Eventually they arrived in a clearing only to find more tracks in the dirt, the same ones Jon had seen on the path. He was about to say something to Martin when some bushes rustled and a giant wolf leapt towards him.
Having a huge animal knock him over once already that day Jon was more alert, and while he managed to avoid the worst of the beast’s attack its claws still managed to slash through his tunic and he could feel hot, sticky blood running down his side. The pain would come later, once the shock went away, but he was glad to have only gotten minor injuries as he stumbled backwards, clutching the cat to his chest and making sure his hood hadn’t fallen off. His ears were flattened against his hair again and his heart was racing.
“Jon!” Martin rushed to him, blue eyes wide as he took in the wound. Jon pushed him away, staring at the wolf in horror. The beast was as large as a horse, its fur so streaked with dirt and blood, mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Still, even as his skin knit back together and his heart pounded in his chest he sensed something off about it. Not just its size, but something about its essence was wrong.
Martin had grabbed a broken branch and was holding it like a club, the dog was growling and looked ready to attack the wolf, but Jon held out a hand. “Don’t!”
“That thing nearly killed you!”
“It’s cursed, Martin, it’s not doing this because it wants to.” Placing the tortoiseshell on the ground he took a few cautious steps towards the wolf, one hand outstretched. It snarled at him, crouching down as though preparing to strike again, but Jon tried to reach out with his powers. He was a cat god, but he hoped he could at least calm the thing down from whatever blind rage it had succumbed to. As he drew nearer he saw something wrapped around the beast’s neck, a leather cord so dirty it was almost indistinguishable from its fur. The energy emanating from the cord was the cause of the strange feeling he’d sensed, could that be the source of the curse? “We need to get the cord off its neck.”
“How are we supposed to do that? I doubt we can get close enough.” Martin frowned, but at least he didn’t seem like he was going to attack the wolf.
“Do you have a knife of some sort?” Jon supposed that being the god of cats it was unusual for him to not have “claws” of some sort, but he didn’t like hurting living things. In the future he might start carrying something around, just in case he needed it.
“Oh, yeah! Hang on.” Martin dropped the branch and fumbled at his waist before tossing something to Jon, who barely managed to catch it. Fortunately the knife was still in its leather sheath, the wooden handle was worn but the blade gleamed as though it had been freshly sharpened. Upon seeing it the wolf snarled, baring its teeth and crouching down as though readying to pounce.
“That’s what I was worried about.” Jon sheathed the knife again and approached the beast slowly, trying not to startle it. Fortunately the wolf did not attack, but it didn’t relax either, its ice-blue eyes focused on him.
When he was in front of it he grasped the leather cord in one hand and had to resist the urge to cry out in agony. Jon wasn’t the target of this particular curse, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t feel the malice that had gone into it. A deer, sacred to the Goddess of the Wild, had been slain by accident and the hunter had been turned into a bloodthirsty monster in return. The wolf howled, out of pain or sadness he didn’t know, but he managed to pull out the knife and cut the cord. It fell to the ground, turning into a pile of ash, and Jon felt his knees buckle.
When his vision cleared Martin was kneeling next to him, and before him lay a woman. Her clothes were tattered, caked in blood and dirt, her blond hair coming out of its messy braid. The dog sniffed at her prone form, occasionally nudging her cheek with his nose or pawing at her as though it was concerned. Jon could see that she was breathing, but no doubt she was exhausted from whatever the curse had done to her.
“This is the beast?” Martin looked taken aback, that the monster who’d slaughtered and wounded animals was just a human. “She looks so... innocent.”
“Everyone looks innocent when they’re asleep. She’s a hunter, but she accidentally chose the wrong prey and angered a god.” Jon sighed, getting to his feet and once more checking his hood.
The cat wound its way between his legs, rubbing up against them and purring. “You did it master!”
“I can carry her back to town.” Jon blinked, not sure he’d understood Martin. “What? We can’t just leave her here, it’d be best to bring her to a healer so someone can take a look at her.”
“Right, of course.” He’d forgotten that humans were so fragile, although Jon could sense that some part of the curse had not left the woman. She had been changed by it, marked by the wild.
The trip back through the forest was quiet, neither of them felt much like talking as they picked their way through the trees. The sun had started to set and Jon had to rely on his night vision to guide them, all the while hoping that Martin wouldn’t ask how he could see so well in the dark, or notice the unusual shine to his eyes. Once they’d entered town a handful of cats approached him, all of them thanking him for getting rid of the beast.
“Wow,” Martin gaped at the welcome party. “Cats really like you, huh?”
“You could say that.” Jon replied, unable to hide his smirk.
It was fortunate that the healer recognized the woman and agreed to treat her free of charge because Jon had no money whatsoever. His followers were mainly cats, and it wasn’t like they were in the business of giving him spare change. The healer called the woman “Daisy,” although the name didn’t seem to fit the huge wolf she’d been mere hours ago. Then again, Jon wasn’t exactly the best name for a god of cats and it was still his name.
It was only when Martin stopped at a crossroads and pointed down one of the streets did Jon remember that their partnership had been temporary. “I live down that way, I’m sure if you ask someone they’ll be able to point you in my direction.”
“Right...” It was strange, he’d only known Martin for a short amount of time and yet he felt a pang of sadness in his chest. “I guess I’ll be seeing you around.”
“Goodnight, Jon.” Martin smiled and began to walk away, the dog bounding off down the street.
“Goodnight, Martin.”
When he returned to his temple and settled down on the pile of blankets he called a bed Jon thought about his day. While he’d originally set off to find the beast because his followers had asked it of him, he hadn’t actually done anything godlike. Sure, he’d figured out that the wolf was cursed and managed to break the cord, but it hadn’t really been that difficult. Apart from getting injured twice, that was. Jon thought of Martin’s kindness when the dog had knocked him over, of his flushed face when he was embarrassed, of his bravery when preparing to fight the beast. As his eyes drifted shut he considered how odd it was, that after being a god for so long it only took one day for him to suddenly feel so very human.

DSMP Citizens POV 5: The L'Manburg Captain
DSMPsona created by anon

Bones was, to say it simply, sick of fighting.
The Guard had been fighting other people’s battles for as long as he could remember. Being raised by two guards on Hypixel, he grew up around fighting. He would be there as his parents broke up violent fights in lobbies, as they enforced the server rules when the admins couldn’t, and he watched as they slowly turned to him to teach him to do the same.
He had become a guard himself, but he grew weary of the fast-paced life of Hypixel. The server was always updating, always changing, and with the highest and fastest-growing population of any server, it was hard to keep track of what was going on.
So, eventually, Bones picked up his things, went to the server hub, and left.
He bounced from one smaller survival server to another, eventually hearing about something called the ‘Dream SMP’ server. Knowing that he had nothing better to do, the Guard decided to join it.
He spawned in a spruce forest, walled in on every side. There were others around the server portal that he had just emerged from, all milling around.
“What’s going on?” Bones asked someone nearby.
The woman he had addressed sighed, and she sounded exhausted. “We’re all just waiting to be greeted.”
After another hour, Dream, a man famous for both his parkour and combat skills, appeared and greeted the newest members of the server. He hadn’t realized that the Dream was the Admin of this world.
Two others stood next to the Admin. One, dressed in regal apparel, wore dark sunglasses over their eyes, a crown resting over their brow. The other wore what looked to be a war uniform. His hands folded behind his back, his gaze steady as it swept over the crowd, he had a firm smile on his face.
The first introduced herself as King Eret, leader of the Greater SMP, while the second called himself President Wilbur Soot, the head of a newly-formed country known as L’Manburg.
The Guard, who considered himself to always be on the side of the people, heard that L’Manburg had recently gained independence after fighting a Revolution in order to “free themselves from tyranny.” The Guard moved into L’Manburg the next day.
He was given a free place to live for a month, giving him time to acclimate to the server, as well as get a job to be able to actually get his own place. Not knowing what else to do, Bones joined the L’Manburg army. He didn’t care for fighting, but it was the only thing that he was good at.
His reputation from Hypixel preceded him, apparently. Being a guard on the biggest server was a very respected career, and Bones found it easy to move up the ranks rather quickly. It probably helped that the L’Manburg forces were rather lacking in terms of officers with actual experience. Guard training on Hypixel was often more intense than many servers’ military training programs, as well, so Bones had no trouble dominating in L’Manburg’s program.
When the elections occurred, the Soldier proudly cast his vote for President Soot and VP Tommy. Bones voted for the people, and Wilbur Soot and TommyInnit were for the people.
The election results, then, were upsetting, to say the least. Bones refused to listen as the new President Schlatt exiled the previous administration and called on the forces of L’Manburg to kill them. He stood in place, nails digging into his palm and screaming profanities as President Soot was bowed down and VP Tommy managed to just barely slip away.
That evening, while on patrol (which he had been demoted to for a month after his show during the inauguration), Bones spotted someone in the treeline.
“Who’s there?” The Soldier called. There was nothing for a moment and Bones aimed his crossbow at the forest. The bushes rustled and then TommyInnit stepped out, his hands raised above his head.
“Vice President?” Bones asked, lowering the crossbow. The leaves shifted again and another emerged. The Soldier blinked, shock holding him in place. “Technoblade?”
Technoblade raised an eyebrow and glanced down at VP Tommy. “Do I need to kill this guy?”
VP Tommy shook his head emphatically. “I don’t think so.” He turned back to Bones. “Do we need to kill you?”
“Are you starting a rebellion?” Bones asked, ignoring the question. A nod was given in response, and his shoulders sagged in relief. “Can I join?”
VP Tommy grinned up at Technoblade. “Told you!” The teenager looked back at the Soldier. “Go ask Niki! Wil said she’s making a rebellion inside Manburg, he sent her the Pogtopia coordinates!”
Bones nodded. “You best be going. I’m meant to be on patrol.”
VP Tommy lazily saluted and bolted off into the woods. Technoblade stared at Bones, gave him a curt nod, and then was gone as well.
The next day, after getting the location of the rebellionfrom Niki Nihachu, Bones gathered his valuables, his beloved dog Rosa, and ran. As he wove through the trees, following the beeping of the communicator to reach the correct coordinates, the Soldier wondered if he would be demoted for this.
He knocked on the rock wall the way that he had been shown to at the bakery, and it slid open to reveal an exhausted-looking President Soot.
The man’s eyes lit up when they landed on him.
“Captain Bones!” President Soot exclaimed, reaching out a hand to shake it firmly. Bones ignored how shaky the other’s fingers were. “What brings you here?” He paused. “Are you here to capture us? Because we’re not on L’Manburg land.”
Bones shook his head. “I heard you’re starting a rebellion?”
Soot’s eyes widened, and then he grinned and ushered the Captain inside.
Pogtopia was a ravine with grayed stones that reflected the mood of all who lived there. Bones started teaching a combat course for those who didn’t know how to fight, and the determination that shone in the eyes of teenagers who were just now choosing to pick up a weapon made him wonder when it had all come to this.
The Captain’s days in Pogtopia were not particularly memorable. He watched as President Soot slowly delved deeper and deeper in paranoia, to the point where he started accusing people like Bones, who had been in the rebellion since the beginning, of being spies all along.
Bones would dig his fingers in the fur of his dog on days like these and remember the inspiring leader that President Soot had once been.
Then, they won against Manburg on November 16th, and President Soot blew up the country before dying himself, and the Captain watched as President Tubbo stood in front of the people of L’Manburg and made promises of a brighter future.
And for a bit of time, it seemed like that could be true.
Then, though, as all good things do, the happiness came to an abrupt end as it was announced that VP Tommy had griefed the vacation home of GeorgeNotFound, the recently-crowned king of the Greater SMP. Dream, the Admin of the server himself, offered President Tubbo a choice: Exile TommyInnit, or their two factions would go to war.
The people of L’Manburg were all generally on the same page, screaming in the streets about how they were ready to fight again. TommyInnit was one of the founding members of the country, he had been there since the beginning. For Bones, though, above all else, it was about the fact that VP Tommy was a teenager. The Captain took to the streets with the others, calling out their readiness to go to war.
When VP Tommy was exiled, then, and sent off to some far-off island, Bones was back in the streets again, yelling at the top of his lungs about the injustice done against a child, thanks to the work of a foreign power.
“L’Manburg has never bowed down at the will of Dream before!” He exclaimed. “We aren’t going to start now!” His call was echoed by those around him, as the people called for justice to be served.
Weeks passed with the people of L’Manburg being tense and angry, the air stewing with conflict. On the eve of January 5th, the people were gathered and listened as President Tubbo, with VP Tommy somehow by his side, explained that the next day, their country would be destroyed.
That night, Bones moved Rosa and all the things that he actually cared about to his assigned tent at the campsite offered up to the L’Manburg residents. As people trickled into the camp, the Captain took anyone who wanted to try and fight the next day and continued the training sessions he’d led back in Pogtopia. There was a greater level of melancholy that had fallen over the people, but they listened nonetheless, and Bones taught and taught until his eyes were stinging from unshed tears and his muscles burned all through his body.
“Get some sleep,” President Tubbo said, joining Bones on the makeshift stage he had taken so that the whole crowd that he was training could see him. “You all are going to need it. Thank you for working so hard to fight for our country.” The teenager wiped at his eyes, and Bones realized through his exhaustion that the president was crying, too. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.” President Tubbo nodded to the Captain, stepped off the stage, and was gone.
Doomsday was, to say the least, a disaster. L’Manburg was blown down to bedrock, there was nothing anyone could do, and by the end of it, Bones stood with the people of a ruined country and looked down at what remained of their home: A hole, one so deep and wide that nothing would ever be built there again.
King Eret stood next to President Tubbo and VP Tommy, overlooking the destruction.
“L’Manburg is gone,” President Tubbo finally said, addressing the crowd. “There will be no rebuilding from this. I’m so sorry, everyone.” Tears were streaming down his face. “L’Manburg was meant to be a safe place, somewhere that people could come to be happy and free. Maybe that was how it was in the beginning, but we lost our way. Maybe in another world, things could have been different.” The teenager laughed wetly, his eyes red as he turned to look at the people. “We did it wrong, but, hey, at least we tried.” He sniffed. “Maybe next time, we’ll do it better.” President Tubbo stopped talking, and everyone was silent for a moment. Then, King Eret began speaking.
“The campsite will remain set up for three more months. You may stay there while you search for a new place to live, whether that be somewhere on this server or on a different one entirely,” King Eret explained, her hands folded neatly behind her back. They glanced back at the crater, and Bones swore he saw a single tear trickle down their face. “L’Manburg was an inspiration to all of the server,” King Eret said. “It will be mourned for centuries.”
Bones, now a veteran of a fallen nation, stayed on the server. He found a piece of land, outside of the borders of the Greater SMP, and settled down there. He learned to farm from a family that lived within the Greater SMP’s territory, and purchased livestock and seeds so he could begin a new life.
The Veteran, with Rosa at his side, settled down for a quieter life. Maybe things would be better now, he supposed. Maybe here, in land that belonged to no one but himself, with no elections to worry about or wars to fight, Bones would be all right. Maybe now, finally, the server could begin to heal, to eventually rise up and fight against the tyranny of their Admin so that peace could finally reign.
(When the news came in on the communicators, then, that Dream had been captured and imprisoned within the maximum security cell of Pandora’s Vault, Bones joined the people in the street, cheering until his voice gave out and drinking until he passed out from happiness.
Then, he buried his face in Rosa’s fur and let out a genuine laugh for the first time in months.
Finally, finally, things could get better.)

Suptober Day 3: Rainbows
„Dude, can’t we just go home?”, Dean muttered into Sams shoulder. They were pressed against each other in an ocean of glittery, half naked people. Normally, Dean was all for glitter and half naked, but not when it was almost 90°F and 2 pm on a Tuesday.
“No way! I wanna see the next act!”
The brochure Sam got handed yesterday in the street said something about a drag queen throwing knives, and for whatever reason Sam had insisted on coming here. Dean had originally planned on waiting in the car, a safe distance from the pride village, but his stomach betrayed him after 10 minutes of smelling all kinds of delicious street food.
When Dean let out an annoyed grunt and rolled his eyes for the twentieth time that day, Sam lost his patience.
“Why don’t you just go and find some more of those churros to stuff yourself with. I’ll meet ya at the gate in 10 minutes”, he snapped.
Dean shot him a sarcastic grin and squeezed his way through the crowd. It was bad enough that he had to loose his jacket because of the heat, now his arms would be glittery for the next month. He finally found a group of flag waving, laughing people that he could follow behind and out of the stage area. The food court left more space for him to walk and he took a deep breath.
He didn’t understand why Sam wanted to come here so desperately. Maybe he needed some distraction after their last hunt; they couldn’t save the stupid teenager who let himself get turned into a vampire and when he had attacked Sam, well… It wasn’t s difficult choice but it didn’t leave them unfazed.
Dean shook of the guilt with a roll of his shoulders and focused his mind on more urgent matters. Churros. He deserved them after spending an hour squeezed between leather straps and nipple patches.
He took the bag of deep-fried goods with a grateful smile from the young woman and found himself a fence to sit on. It might have possibly been the quietest place in the whole village and Dean enjoyed the silence for a minute. He was getting old after all, and even though he would never admit it, the loud music was giving him a headache. Some of the churros were filled with jam and some with nougat and Dean couldn’t help but smile as he thought about how much Jack would love these. For a second he considered saving one for Jack, but he decided that cold churros tasted like sad clowns so he had to finish them all by himself.
As he was stuffing the last churro on his mouth, he noticed a guy sitting across the lawn, leaning against a tree. And smiling at him. Dean froze for a second. Was the guy…No. People can be friendly for the sake of it. He wasn’t being checked out. He couldn’t be, he had a mouth full of deep-fried dough and his hands were covered in jam. He shook his head in disbelieve about his egocentric thoughts and tried to smile at the guy in response, though it probably looked quite horrible, considering his puffed-out cheeks.
But the guy seemed to get the idea because Dean could make out the movement of the guys shoulders as he chuckled. Dean was pleased with himself. No reason to panic just because someone offered a kind smile. He began to wipe his hands on the stack of napkins he wisely brought with him, when he saw movement in the corner of his eyes. The guy was scribbling something down and got up to get back to the party, Dean assumed. That assumption was disproven when he suddenly felt the presence of another human in his space.
Like a deer caught in headlights, Dean stared up at the man with wide eyes, his hands stopped in the middle of the wiping motion. The guy was almost as tall as Dean, with messy black hair and a five o’clock shadow. His eyes, Dean realized, now that they were face to face, were differently coloured behind his glasses. One was strikingly blue, almost white and the other was as dark and green as moss.
It took Dean a minute to tear his eyes away from those of the stranger, who was just smiling at him with an amused expression on his face. He then reached up to Deans face and gently wiped away some jam that was stuck on the corner of his mouth. Dean was so surprised by the intimate motion, he was back to staring and if his breath might have hitched, the guy didn’t let on whether he noticed.
“You have something on you face.”
His voice was deep and smoky and send a shudder down Deans spine. Internally, he slapped himself for his reaction, or the mere lack of it, if he was being honest. Normally, he would turn on his charm and tell Sammy to get a cap to the motel, but for some reason his brain had decided to just not function today.
Somehow, he managed to gulp down the doughy mush and choked out a “Thanks” before the stranger handed him the napkin with a smile and disappeared in the crowd. For Dean the interaction had seemed to last hours, but in reality it probably were only two minutes. And still he sat there on the fence, like an idiot, still clutching the napkin in his hands and staring at the spot where he last saw the dark hair disappear.
The ringing of his phone snapped him back into the real world and he answered with a grunt. ^
“Dude, where the hell are you?”, Sams shouted into his ear. In the background Dean could hear the music blasting and people cheering.
He cleared his throat and forced himself to get a grip.
“I’m, uh, I’m somewhere at the side, with- with grass ‘n trees? I don’t know.”
“What? Dean, I can barely hear you. Just meet me at the Info point, okay?” Sam shouted and hung up.
Dean let out a sigh and ran a hand over his face. This was stupid. He had acted like a fifteen year old virgin with a crush and had missed the opportunity for a nice little pick-me-up. He once again shook his head and hopped of the fence. When he collected his trash, he remembered the napkin the guy had given to him and for whatever reason, he decided to look at it. And there it was. A number scribbled at the corner with a “Aaron” and a heart above it. Dean chuckled to himself. He still got it. Or at least he tried to convince himself that it was his charm and not maybe the dude having a weird eating kink that got him a number. Whichever it was, he took it as a win.
He spotted Sam easily in the crowd, although there were quite a few guys in dangerously high heels walking around. Neither of them dressed like a 17 year old lesbian though, so Sam still stuck out.
He was standing at the desk of the info point, patting himself down and smiling apologetically at the teen next to the register. When Dean pat him on the shoulder, he sighed in relief and turned around.
“You got some cash?”, was all he asked. Dean searched for his wallet and peeked at the object Sam wanted to purchase.
“The hell is this? You got a zebra kink of something?”
Sam gave him his best bitch face and unfolded the black and white piece of fabric. Except it wasn’t all black and white. In the middle, there was a triangle in rainbow colours.
“It’s an ally flag, Dean. Now give me the money.” But Dean took a look around at the stuff that was put on display in the tent. A huge pile of differently coloured flags with a legend to all the pride flags next to it, took up most of the space. Dean took a long look at the poster and then grabbed one of the plastic bags. He turned back to his brother, when his eye got caught by one of the nick-nacks next to the register. With a grin he took it and put it next to his brothers flag.
When the sat down in the car, Dean couldn’t ignore Sams curious stares anymore.
“What?”
“Nothing”, Sam tried to keep down a smile.
“Just wondered what you got for yourself.”
Without looking at him, Dean pulled the pink, blue and purple flag out of the bag and threw it in Sams lap.
“That one’s for me”, he muttered and ground his teeth when he felt the embarrassed blush creep up his neck. Quickly, he pulled out the last item in the bag and held it up. It was a headband with a fluffly, rainbow-coloured halo atop of it, which bounced around crazily as Dean shook it.
“This one’s for Cas.”
