Sam's POV
“Hey, Dean, are you feeling okay?” I asked after glancing at him from the passenger seat in the Impala a few times over the last half hour.
He'd been acting off since we stopped at the dinner a few hours back. He looked paler by the minute and his stomach kept making this weird growling sound. He always put on a strong face, but I could tell when he wasn’t feeling well.
“I’m good.” Dean grumbled, keeping his eyes glued to the road.
“Want me to drive for a bit?” I offered, pushing him slightly.
“I said 'I’m good'. I can do it.” He grunted, gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles were white and I reached over, placing the back of my hand on his forehead.
“Dean, you're burning up,” I worried before he shoved away my hand and growled.
“I’m fine, man, get off me.”
“Would you just stop for a minute and pull over.” I argued, pointing out the sign for the exit coming up.
“Y/N’s waiting for us… we’ve only got another four hours to go.” Dean said, glancing at his wristwatch.
We were on our way to meet Y/N a couple of states over who called up looking for some back up with a vamp nest she had stumbled onto. Y/N Y/L/N was quite the hunter, nearly as tough as a Winchester and I knew Dean had a thing for her since we'd met her. But she never fell for his playboy facade.
“I think she’s gonna have to wait a little longer than that. You’re sick, dude.” I announced.
“No, I’m not.”
“Yeah, you are.”
“Nu-uh-”
“Here, take this exit, we’ll regroup at a motel and call Y/N. It’s late anyways.” I insisted, Dean taking the off ramp without much convincing.
“Fine, but only because you’re tired.” He caved, pulling into the first motel he saw.
I checked us in, letting Dean sit in the car, surprisingly without any argument despite his utter denial of being sick. Insisting every step of the way that he was fine and he didn't want to keep Y/N waiting. Yet, the second I unlocked the door to the motel room, he pushed past me, rushing into the bathroom and slamming the door shut.
It was close quarters and it was easy to tell that he was tossing his cookies, quite a bit actually. I knocked twice but he told me to give him a minute, adding in a few choice words here and there between bouts of hurling.
I decided to give him some space and called up Y/N letting her know that we weren't going to make it there according to our previous conversation. And gave her the number of some hunter nearby that I thought could help her out instead. Dean would be furious if he knew I pawned the job off on someone else, mainly because he just wanted to see Y/N, poor guy was jonesing pretty hard for her. But I would rather her have some sort of backup than go at it alone.
"Dean?" I called through the door once the sound of his hurling stopped.
"Hey, give me five minutes for a shower and I'll be good to hit the road." He said, opening the door and leaning against the frame, looking all sorts of wrecked.
"You're kidding me, right?!" I glared down at my big brother, giving him my classic bitch face; he was always acting too tough for his own good. "I called Y/N, she said the hunt can wait until you’re feeling better.” I lied, for now. I'd tell him in the morning about the other hunter, when he was feeling better.
“I’m not sick, Sam, I feel fine."
But the grip he held on the door frame said otherwise and I swear if people could actually turn green... Dean spun around and keeled over the toilet, hanging his head in the porcelain bowl as he practically threw up another lung.
“Yeah, not sick, my ass... Eh, tough-guy?" I chuckled at the eye roll he attempted, no doubt making himself dizzy with the motion and he held his head with an elbow propped on the edge of the tub.
“Shut up. At least you don’t gotta hold my hair back, Rapunzel.” Dean grunted, squeezing his eyes shut.
"Are you good for a bit if I head out?" I asked, digging around for the keys to Baby in his jacket that he had tossed onto the ground.
"Yeah, where are you going?" He questioned without opening his eyes.
"I saw a twenty-four hour pharmacy a couple of streets back."
"Dude, I'm fi-"
"'Fine', I know. I'm still going." I said, cutting him off.
Dean just groaned in response and I headed out, making sure the door to the room was locked when I left. I would never admit it to him, but every time I got the chance to sit behind the wheel of the Impala I revelled, the purr of the engine under the weight of my foot was something else; it was a wonder he ever let me drive at all. There was more to it than a regular car getting you from point A to point B. It was class, muscle, and confidence in shiny black paint.
I pulled into the pharmacy and grabbed a bunch of stuff I thought might help including ibuprofen, cold & flu meds, Pepto, ginger ale, and Gatorade. A couple packs of microwavable soup mix and some saltine crackers, too. I flashed the cashier a soft smile and kind eyes, hoping she wouldn't read too much into the fake name on my credit card when I handed it over. And she didn't, keeping her eyes fixed on my hair as I ran my fingers through my mane, just for fun really. Dean would never understand the power of long hair.
When I returned I found Dean passed out in the bathtub of all places, fully dressed too. It wasn't as if he had tried to take a shower, he legitimately made a rational decision to climb in there in search of sleep. I had to admit it was kinda funny, but also I felt kind of bad and decided he'd be better off in bed with a trash bin on the floor next to him. I figured the worst had passed if he was asleep, but I still wanted to get some meds into him so he could get some peaceful rest instead of feeling whatever level of shit he was that makes him crawl into a metal tub to pass out.
"Dean, wake up." I said, tapping the side of the tub with my foot.
If it had been any other scenario I would've turned the shower on, but it seemed cruel in his state. Even if he had it coming after putting itching powder in my underwear. Instead, I just poked him.
"Get off," Dean mumbled and I poked him again. "Cut it out."
"You're such a grump when you're sick." I chuckled, pulling him up to his feet half conscious. He rested most of his weight on my shoulders and I practically had to drag him over to his bed. I eased him down onto the mattress and he instantly curled up with the pillow. "See, now isn't better than sleeping in the tub of a grungy motel bathroom?"
"I was excited to see Y/N..." Dean whispered sheepishly, hugging his pillow and I checked his temperature with the back of my hand. When I was satisfied he no longer felt hot, I tossed the other half of the comforters over him. "It's been months since she's called."
“Then, I guess it's a good thing she's on her way, huh?" I revealed, Y/N having called me up on my way back from the pharmacy. She was going to stop by in the morning after her and the other hunter dealt with the vamps.
"Is she really?" He asked with as much excitement as he could muster and I grinned. "And before you answer, just know it would be cruel to lie to a sick guy."
"So you finally admit you are sick?" I feigned shock and fetched the Pepto from the bag on the table, pouring out a dose for him in the cap.
"Only a little bit." Dean admitted, happily accepting the chalky substance.
"Just try to get some sleep for now. She’ll be here when you wake up.”
I set the bottle and cap on the nightstand next to him and brought over a bottle of ginger ale and Gatorade. So he'd have a choice of the two when he wanted a drink. Then, I sat up on my own bed and grabbed the remote to turn on the television, flipping through the channels aimlessly until I was sure Dean would be fine and got a couple hours of shut eye myself.
_____
Y/N's POV
“Hey, sleepy-head. How are you feeling?” You asked, cupping Dean’s cheek and brushing the pad of your thumb over his clammy skin.
He didn't look too bad, but you were happy you made the drive even if you were tired from being up all night. The vamps you were hunting turned out to be simpler and faster than you thought to take care of, too. Especially with the help of that hunter Sam had sent your way.
“Better now that you’re here,” he mumbled sleepily, leaning his cheek into your palm and you grinned.
“Hasn’t Sam been taking care of you?” You tsked, glancing over at the giant sitting up on the other twin bed. Sam giving you an unimpressed look and continuing to scroll through whatever he was looking up on his laptop.
“Uh-huh, but he’s not you.” Dean smirked, opening his green eyes just a crack so he could see your face.
"You're such a suck when you're sick." You chuckled and brushed his hair back.
It was a little sweaty from the night before and he didn't smell all that great either, but it was still better than the vamp blood you had on your jacket. Which you had tossed into the trunk of your car before you made the drive up. It desperately needed a wash along with most of your other clothes.
"Only when you're here, actually." Sam chimed in, rolling his eyes and you figured there had been some brotherly quarrelling going on before you got there.
"Shut it, Sasquatch."
"Watch it, big brother, or next time I'll let you sleep in the bathtub." Sam warned with an amused stare and you laughed at the exchange.
"Sorry," Dean muttered, not sounding completely convincing, though Sam accepted it. "What happened with the vamp nest?”
“Don’t worry about it, De, I took care of them.” You assured, Sam having told you not to bring up the other hunter just yet and you added, knowing Dean would need a little push. “I didn’t really need your help anyways, I was just using it as an excuse to see you again."
“Bet this wasn’t exactly what you had in mind, huh?” He quipped and you twirled a lock of his hair between your fingers.
“Nah, but that’s okay. Wanna watch some shitty daytime TV program and laze around in bed all day?” You raised your eyebrows and bit your lip in question.
He nodded and you sat down beside him with your back against the headboard, flipping through the channels with the scanner in one hand and playing with his hair with the other. Dean hummed every now and again when you ran your fingers through his hair and you couldn't help but smile down at him. He had unconsciously snuggled closer to you so that his head lay in your lap, but you didn't mind if that's what he needed to feel better. You liked sick, cuddly Dean a lot more than playboy Dean, he was too cocky for your liking.
“Wait, go back,” Dean said, pointing at the TV.
“What, this?” You asked, flipping back to a channel with some sort of hospital soap opera playing.
“Yeah, guilty pleasure.” He shrugged with a tinge of red in his cheeks that you thought was ridiculously cute.
You left the doctor show on, despite Dean only watching half of it with his eyes closed for the rest. You didn't mind, but you did wonder why in the hell the doctor was wearing cowboy boots. It seemed impractical for that workplace environment and you figured you'd ask him about it later.
"Feeling better?" You asked, lightly scratching the hair behind Dean's ear, moving your fingertips down his hairline until you saw goosebumps form on the skin of his neck and he shuddered contentedly and hummed.
"Mhm."
Dean sighed, throwing his arm over your thighs in a strange attempt at a hug that you embraced. You giggled softly, brushing his hair forward so that it stood on end reminding you of a sleepy hedgehog and then smoothing it back down again. You did that a couple more times until you heard a dry heave come from the bed next to you.
"You guys make me sick." Sam commented with a palm to his mouth.
"Very funny," Dean said, assuming he was teasing but Sam set aside his laptop and pushed himself up from the bed slowly, a dubious look on his face.
"No, I'm serious, I don't feel great." He said, rushing into the bathroom a moment later, holding his stomach.
"Ugh, you Winchesters don't make my life easy." You groaned, sliding your legs out from under Dean's head and replacing yourself with a pillow.
"Maybe you should keep your distance, sweetheart. Don't need you getting sick too." He stated sadly, trying to sit up so he could go check on Sam but you pushed him to lay back down.
"Don't worry about me, De. I got my flu shot. Besides, who else is gonna take care of you two, hm?" You smiled at him, brushing his messy hair back from his face and grabbing the Pepto on the nightstand next to you. "I swear, I don't know how you two survive without me."
"S'not easy." Dean laughed, resting back on the bed, still exhausted from the night before.
You chuckled softly, leaning over to press a kiss to his forehead and he closed his green eyes, humming at the feel. Then, you pulled away and made your way over to the bathroom to check on Sam.

70 George Weasley headcanons in celebration of 700 followers!
A/N: I hate to repeat myself but I do still love and appreciate all 700 of you! Thank you for reading my stuff and here’s to 700 more! <3
Find the 70 Fred Headcanons: Here
Tumblr media
George is well known to be the brains behind the twins’ operations. He sorted out finding the location for the shop in Diagon Alley, he came up with most of the names for their products, even if Fred came up with the idea for the product itself, and for the longest time, he was the one who sorted out sales and orders for stocking their wares as well as overseeing the owl post-service while Fred sorted the more practical parts.
It might sound crazy, but if you ask George, he didn’t actually like Fred very much until they were about eight or nine years old. George was a lot more quiet and emotional than Fred and frankly, probably feared his mother more than his twin, and so George always thought Fred was too brash for his liking. Eventually, as we know, Fred’s crazy ideas rubbed off on George, and he started liking his twin more and more until they became the inseparable duo we know and love today. Mostly this was because the two found out how well they complimented each other, which meant that whatever they got up to turned out a lot better than when they’d attempt the same alone.
Fred added an extra oomph to their escapades, daring to aim just a little higher, and George was sensible enough to make sure that a little higher wasn’t too high.
It’s only their older siblings who noticed this change and remember the times where Fred and George didn’t get along as well as they did, which is why Bill, Charlie and Percy tend to treat the twins more as individuals whereas Ginny and Ron are more likely to see them as a duo.
Since George is more sentimental, he’s also the bigger worrier. Did they like that joke? Did that prank go too far? Is this worth it and what are we going to do if it isn’t? He’s usually also the twin who’s more likely to step back and apologise to anyone they’ve pranked or teased, not liking the idea of upsetting someone.
This also means he’s incredibly considerate concerning relationships, he’s not afraid to voice his concerns and worries. If his s/o is struggling with something, he notices, worries and tries his best to support them.
Essentially, if their s/o is upset: Fred is more likely to make a joke to make them laugh and take their mind off it, George is more likely to take them aside and talk to them about it, letting them let their feelings out for as long as they need, he’ll listen for hours if that’s what his s/o needs.
Speaking of letting feelings out: It’s been pondered if the reason George is the better beater, despite Fred being the more brash and extreme of the two, is because he uses the quidditch pitch as an outlet for his aggression and considering his anger doesn’t just involve beating bludgers but also resorting to elbowing people in the face (or beating Malfoy up) I’d say that this is incredibly true for him. Most people share the opinion that if something angers George, he’d let it build up until he explodes (myself included) and playing quidditch is a good way to let off steam without it being directed at anyone in particular, making him extremely violent on the pitch, though after every game he plays, he’ll probably be in his most zen and relaxed state of mind.
I do also like the idea of George being very emotionally mature in the sense that he knows how his feelings tend to build up, and since George is also a worrier, he probably doesn’t like the side of him that explodes in people’s faces and yells until he’s done being angry, so: He does try to confront his feelings as soon as he feels them so they don’t get a hold on him. If he’s angry with you, he’ll tell you, if he’s upset because of something that’s happened he’ll tell you. If he doesn’t and seems all quiet and broody (cause he’s not a saint and sometimes he doesn’t confess his feelings) then it’s probably a good idea that you ask him about it.
George is also not afraid to cry, or at least he’s not as afraid to show it as Fred. He actually cried quite often as a small child, as Fred will happily remind him. The only times George will hold his tears back is when he doesn’t want to make the people he loves the most worry, like when he lost his ear.
He was so close to crying he thought his throat would split open but he kept it in while his parents and Fred were there; he couldn’t bear to worry his mother more. Not to mention Fred for that matter. Instead, he waited until he was allowed to take a shower and let it out as quietly as he could, though little did he know Fred was standing guard on the other side of the bathroom door, crying as well.
George doesn’t want a lot of children, he’s so used to the large family dynamic. It’s not that he disliked having many siblings but he’d prefer to have a few kids, three at most and be able to spoil them rotten.
George has only broken one bone. It was his collarbone from a bludger. Besides that, he has dislocated his arm once due to hitting a bludger too forcefully from a wrong angle and sprained his ankle from landing too quickly more times than he can count. He’s also been concussed from taking bludgers to the head twice.
George is actually a bit of a neat-freak. He likes having things in order and in the right place so he doesn’t lose track of things. He can’t put too many things in cupboards because if he can’t see them he’ll forget he has them and buy more and more (cause ADHD, baby), so instead he keeps things where he can see them, though in racks and specific orders which Fred often messes up.
Generally, once they moved out, George was better at doing the housework and he didn’t mind at all. Doing all the housework means it gets done the way he wants it done.
His favourite season is winter and his favourite holiday is Christmas because it’s “a time for family”.
George prefers Molly over Arthur (though it’s a tough pick), and he especially loves spoiling her once the shop takes off. He’ll buy her gifts often and always writes to remind her how much he (and Fred) appreciate her.
He’d never admit it but he also does this as a way of proving himself to her. It really hurt him in those years where Molly would disapprove of his and Fred’s plans and even when he found success he still grappled with the feeling of his mother not being proud of him, despite her telling him that several times. All this just added to his disliking of Percy when he was at his going through his insensitive-git-phase.
George’s favourite time of day is the evening. When everything’s quiet and still he can concentrate better. He wrote most of his essays and came up with most products for the shop during this time.
George loves intimacy. He’s not big on PDA. Cuddling alone together, being all tangled up in each other and having whispered conversations when everyone else is asleep are more his thing.
He does love being close to you in public though, he’ll sit next to you, hold your hand, have an arm around you, lean his head on yours, bump his knee against yours under the table if you’re in a lesson or at a meal together. Small yet intimate touches are George’s romantic love language.
George’s favourite sweet is chocolate. Anything with chocolate is good. If there’s caramel or coffee involved too then even better, mint is also accepted (his favourite flavour of ice cream is mint chocolate chip and he will fight you on why it’s the superior ice cream flavour)
George prefers tea over coffee and drinks AT LEAST two cups a day but can easily have up to four or five depending on how long his day is.
George takes a lot of naps. He’d occasionally nap at Hogwarts, like most students. He really started after he lost his ear because Molly kept fussing over him and forcing him to go lay down and rest, then it became even more of a regular thing after the battle of Hogwarts when he’d stay with Fred at st. Mungo’s, while he got better, and then when Fred forced him to go back to work because “sitting here, is not going to make my leg work, now go make us some galleons you git!” he’d work the shop mostly by himself, well, actually completely by himself beside his employees, which was still a small team at the time and he’d often just have to excuse himself to go upstairs and take 30 minutes to nap before he’d pass out from exhaustion.
George struggles with some sensory problems since losing his ear, he gets a faint ringing sound in his ear every now and then, and though he can hear out of his missing ear, it’s less than his other one and he struggles determining where sounds are coming from which is distracting sometimes. He also got a bit of vertigo every now and then as well as some nausea for the first few years after he lost the ear, it got better and better and today it barely bugs him, though he gets dizzy easily.
On the subject of the ear: George enjoyed telling his nieces and nephews (and heck his own kids too) these wild stories of how he lost his ear: he paid it as a toll to an ancient spirit to gain superpowers, it froze off on a particularly cold camping trip with their uncle Fred, a bludger blew it right off, he was possessed by the spirit of van Gogh…. the list goes on.
George was also slightly self-conscious of his ear for a while, he often worried if people were grossed out by it, though with time he forgot about it more and more until he hardly noticed it himself. Now he doesn’t notice if others notice and frankly, he couldn’t care less if they do.
Fred and George mention in OOTP that they took turns testing products, George tested puking pastilles and ended up taking several days off because of what Madam Pomfrey thought was a bad case of the stomach flu, nosebleed nougat (he said himself how it kept bleeding and at that point he let Fred do more testing because Madam Pomfrey was starting to get wayyy to suspicious of him having some terrible disease that was thought to be long gone) and fever fudge though Fred also tried that one.
George takes after his mother as a parent, his platonic love language is definitely cooking for his kids, making them hot cocoa and baking with them during Christmas breaks.
Does he fuss over his kids as Molly does? Noo, absolutely not no. no way. no. no. (yes)
George’s boggart is being left alone.
Despite that, he hates it when people assume that he and Fred are interchangeable and incapable of being without each other. He loves his friendship with Fred, he’s very happy to be his twin but he’s still his own person and it would be nice to be seen as such and not just “one of the Weasley twins”
Mostly his hatred of being seen as “one of the Weasley twins” stems from the fact that people always assume Fred first, meaning George has been mistakenly called Fred more times than he can count.
George is very timid, to begin with, in any relationships because he’s worried his s/o wants him to be like Fred, and that they don’t really care about him as a person but see him more as an asset or “the next best thing to Fred” Which is also why he’d never marry Angelina after she’d dated Fred, even if it was just for a while.
George spent his first salary from the shop on a gift for his mother, a necklace, and a mixed bag of sweets from Sugarplums'...He knows it’s stupid but he just wanted to buy as much candy as he wanted without feeling guilty about spending money for once.
George is not squeamish what so ever. He has got a stomach of steel. It’s almost kind of freaky how unfaced he is but then again, he did invent and test puking pastilles and a product called you-no-poo, so he’s seen a lot.
George’s favourite dates are movie nights and going for ice cream.
George (and Fred) regularly attends quidditch matches, they also love to go back to Hogwarts to watch their kids play (you know at least one of their kids would be into it, considering the Weasley’s history with the sport) and they always yell out their support v e r y loudly.
George really likes wine. The older he gets he appreciates it more and enjoys talking about it without any knowledge on it at business dinners, he’s impressed quite a few potential clients and business partners by giving them a long tirade about wine, without a single thing of it being necessarily true.
George (+Fred and Lee, lol) experimented with eyeliner for a short while, they stopped because it was quote-unquote: “too much work” which made a lot of their female friends roll their eyes because, oh you’ve no idea, do you, Weasley?
I mean someone had to test the wonderwitch products, right?
George is a very light sleeper, and since Fred is anything but that- what with his sleepwalking and tossing and turning- George rarely got a lot of sleep, meaning there’s a large percentage of his detentions in school that were solely from “inattentiveness” aka “falling asleep in class.”
George always thought that if he really really couldn’t work with the joke shop, he’d be a healer. He doesn’t know if he’d be any good at it but it’s a nice thought and he does have a caring gene from his mother.
George’s first sign of magic was when he was a year old. He summoned a blanket into his crib, so it wasn’t much. His first noticeable thing he did was three years later by blasting Fred off him when they were play-wrestling, he basically shocked him with a defensive charge which sent Fred flying onto his back. Fred’s reaction was sitting up, looking shocked, rubbing his head and then whispering: “cool!” They spent days trying to recreate it but to no avail. The story of the event has been greatly exaggerated by both Fred and George to their nieces and nephews.
They still joke that George has a secret superpower that can only be unlocked by play-wrestling him.
As George gets older, he requires glasses like his father, though mostly for reading and sometimes for working on products.
George’s favourite genre of music is soft rock, he’ll belt out an 80’s power ballad any day (and preferably while cooking)
Oh, cooking. George gets super into cooking and baking after the twins move out, he tries his best to recreate his mother’s recipes and is still to this day attempting to perfect her cornish pasty (a personal favourite of his) and every Christmas, George and Molly practically never leave the kitchen in the burrow, as George desperately tries to learn everything he can.
George is the godparent of all Fred’s kids as well as Albus, Dominique and Lucy.
George buys the best gifts, I’ve already touched on this, but he has a weird ability to get you not only what you wish for but what you really need.
Also, his gift wrapping skills are out of this world (his kids + nieces and nephews will never not receive those gifts that are wrapped in like 100 layers of paper)
George loves pet names, he loves the overly sweet, cliché ones and the simple, common ones. His favourite to call his s/o is darling, sweetheart and, weirdly, pumpernickel (he just thinks it’s a funny word).
George’s favourite dates he’d take his s/o on is: museum dates, cooking for them at home, picnics and going to the beach.
George actually kind of liked the Hogwarts uniform. It was easy to keep track of and it meant he could spend minimum time in hand-me-downs that rarely fit perfectly.
George would love to have (and probably has already got) a dog, he doesn’t care what size or breed (but personally I can see him getting on well with a cavalier or a Stabyhoun)
George (also) has a small size kink: He loves wrapping his arms around his s/o from behind, enveloping them in his jacket when it’s cold and resting his head on top of theirs.
George is either full of energy and wants to do five things at once or wants nothing more than to lay flat on the nearest soft surface he can find and watch movies until he falls asleep.
He often takes his s/o on random adventures, he does it as a way to escape boredom or if he’s lost his inspiration. He finds it helps to come up with new ideas if you throw yourself off your rhythm (if you get it you get it) by doing something random you don’t normally do.
George has big John Mulaney energy and if his s/o ever showed him his shows, he’d probably never stop quoting them.
George’s favourite body parts on his s/o: Neck, hands, lips (and butt) (this is where it gets steamy just fyi)
George is very respectful in bed, he’s the type to ask “are you ok?” and “is this ok?” a lot, at least the first couple of times he’s together with his s/o until he gets to know them better.
George def. has a praise kink, he loves giving praise but he also loves feeling like he’s appreciated and loved and doing a good job, you know?
We all know George has a thing for lace, we’re way beyond that at this point. Consider silk, though. He’d totally be into silk over the lace, it’s a light fabric, pretty and really easy to tear away…. *wink*
George is surprisingly good at opening bras.
Generally, he’s really good with his fingers…
He has a pretty dirty mind when it comes to sex but is also super embarrassed about it so he’d only admit his kinkier thoughts when he really trusts and knows his s/o.
I think he’d be pretty two-sided in bed, he loves the intimate, sweet sex but also the rougher, tearing-your-lingerie-off-you sex.
He prefers receiving more than giving oral but it is by such a small margin, he’ll happily give.
He can only last one round (maybe two if you give him a long break) but he’ll absolutely make it count.
George’s fav position is missionary. As much as he likes trying other positions, he prefers the intimacy of missionary. Plus he thinks being able to see your face as you unravel under him is really hot.

I’m gonna be completely honest: I don’t know shit about hockey so apologizes in advance
Mark is a left-winger for the team
he plays for his university’s team and they’re actually pretty good
within the three-ish years that he’s been on the team, they’ve won a couple of championships
it’s not really hard considering that Mark takes everything too seriously
(at least that’s what Donghyuk says during practice all the time)
Johnny somewhere: “okay Mark”
Yuta: “let’s not overreact Mark”
Taeyong: “leave my son alone”
Mark: “I’m a grown adult…”
Taeyong: “shhh”
since he used to play for his team back in hometown, he naturally joined the university’s team
he was a natural and everyone easily took a liking to him
especially since now they have someone to make fun of constantly
by they, I literally mean just Donghyuk
I’m just kidding—it’s all in good fun because it just shows how close they are
Mark is just that one college kid that’s still cute even when he’s not a freshman anymore
the other team members still treat him like the youngest even though YangYang and Sungchan are like
👁👄👁 hello ?
speaking of which, their teamwork is incredible and it shows through their games
and, on the rare occasions that they don’t win, they still have dinner together afterwards
well, it’s less of dinner and more of drinks and strategizing what went wrong—which are kind of depressing but it’s fine
at least that’s what Sicheng says as captain, but it sounds like denial
anyways, even though Ten is the co-captain, they all work to make their play plan together
they all contribute ideas, especially since they’ve been in the positions they’ve been in for, like, ever
anyways
again, Mark is like really good
so you know he got that bombass scholarship
and that’s what really pushes him to do well bc let’s be real, college is e x p e n s i v e
he also likes ice skating in general because the cold reminds him of home
so he’s one of those hockey players that also likes figures skaters and it’s funny because he gets so many weird looks from the others
(altho, Jeno goes with him sometimes bc he’s nice)
back to what I was saying tho: Mark is really good
despite his personality, he’s a bit more aggressive on the ice—considering he’s a forward
Donghyuk, the right-winger: he makes sense
there’s the passive aggressive-ness
Mark? who knew he had some strength to him when it’s actually applied
seriously, have you seen his thighs?
speaking of which, the team serves a lot of looks
which means a lot of speculators that show up to the games
which means lots of fans
people typically come for the looks, but then stay for the games bc the team is very underrated
they actually win games and everything but like
advertising for the team? nonexistent
@stupid college funding distributions that focus on mediocre sports like football
so, where do you fall into the mix? you’re an og stan
you’ve been in the stands since you entered university
it didn’t even have anything to do with the members (altho, it is nice to have some eye-candy)
you just……… like hockey
even if you don’t understand much about it
it’s just… interesting to watch
so, whenever the season rolls around, you go to the games
but to say over the years that you didn’t develop a particular attachment to our boy Mark…… is an absolute lie
so, do you have a crush on Mark?
yes
but also like
who doesn’t have a crush on Mark
this man is literally so talented and nice and adorable and he just makes you want to take care of him all the time and ugh
one of your friends went to a game with you and literally was just like “oh he’s cute”
You: “we know”
he’s def one of those guys who everyone has or has had a crush on at some point
and you are no different
the thing is that you are fine with not ever confessing because you’re happy with just being on the sidelines because you’ve. literally. just been on the sidelines…
the idea of confessing feels ridiculous bc realistically, what would you mean to some guy that literally e v e r y person has a crush on?
the thing is though is that Mark knows you
at least, he knows of your presence
if he didn’t, it would be embarrassing considering that you come to every game - he’s got loyalty unless some people
Ten: “who?”
Mark: “dude”
Donghyuk: “is this another one of your imaginary friends?”
Mark: “I TOLD YOU THAT IN CONFIDENCE”
jkjk , they all kind of know you, considering you’re one of the more consistent faces since they’ve been playing in these games (primarily the home ones bc free tickets for students but still)
you also don’t paint your face or anything—you just show up in your university sweatshirt with a couple of those foam light up sticks or something
again, not that wild like signs with his face or anything
you’re just…. a spectator
but yeah, Mark knows of you as a loyal fan ?
who also is kind of cute when you’re cheering for them
I want to emphasize that you have gone to, like, nearly every game, but the main ones you’ve *always* have gone to are the home games bc they’re more convenient
or the final games bc hello
they’re the finals, why the fuck would you miss the finals
I emphasize this because, when you’ve suddenly gone down with the flu, you literally cannot make it to the finals championship game
you thought: no one was gonna notice your absence anyways
haha, you thought
anyways
your friends figured you were sick from the beginning and were like, my friend, it’s flu season, stay away from me and pls stay at home
(wash your hands kids, it’s still covid season)
so you didn’t go and stayed in and binged watched iCarly or something
meanwhile, during the game, Mark was like
where... where are you???
so homeboy is highkey distracted and lowkey worried bc did you die???
(you were dying bc of your clogged nostrils, but otherwise, no)
they somehow managed to win by a couple of points so it was kind of fine
but the teasing was increased by all of Mark’s friends
i.e. Johnny, Donghyuk, Jaehyun, and everyone else
come on, it’s so easy to make fun of him
but like he doesn’t care about any of it bc he was worried about you
which got him thinking
why is he worried about someone whose name he doesn’t even know? is there something more? why is there something more? he literally doesn’t know you? except that you come to the games and you’re really cute cheering him on? what is this?
you know, ✨just Mark things✨
this bothered him for quite a bit more than he liked to admit
and it’s about a couple of days later
things are normal and you don’t feel like everything is dripping out of your nose
until you’re walking through campus from your class
and there’s some footsteps running from behind you that makes you coil up into a semi-standing ball bc you thought a bunch of frat boys were just excited or some shit
but then the footsteps stop at you and you’re standing there, wide-eyed
in front of an out of breath Mark
he was walking out of his class with Jaemin and he spotted you from across the quad
and immediately ran to you
Jaemin: I was talking but okay
this isn’t about you Jaemin
anyways
Mark is in front of you, panting and you’re just like sir?
You: “how are you out of breath? aren’t you an athlete?”
Mark: “oh my God, you’re just like Donghyuk”
you give him a bit of time (and some water bc he seemed like he needed it)
and once he’s caught his breath, he stands up and blurts it out
Mark: “what happened to you during the championship?”
You: “....................... what?”
seeing you blink at him confused, he can feel his ears reddening when he’s realized the situation he’s put himself into
Mark: “um, I just”
Mark: “I noticed that you weren’t at the game”
You: still confused bc how does he know about you
You: “huh?”
Mark: oh my God this is the wrong person, want to die
Mark: “you know what, I have the wrong person, I’m just gonna bounce I am so sorry—”
he starts backing up, but you aren’t letting him escape
You: “whoawhoawhoawhoawhoa, hold up hold up”
You: “I didn’t even know that you knew that I knew you”
You: “wait, did you run here just to ask me that?”
Mark is full on flushed at this point bc of all the questions and realizations and it’s all crashing down on him all too soon
and now you have this mischievous look in your eyes that remind him of Ten when he’s clowning Doyoung and he feels like he’s made a mistake
a good mistake but still a mistake
You: “is it?”
Mark: “well, you like, show up to all of our games and you didn’t go to the finals so I didn’t know if anything happened”
You: “oh, I got sick and I figured I shouldn’t be going into giant crowds while having my insides die internally”
You: “but, I did hear from my friends, congrats btw”
Mark: “thanks”
Mark: “are you feeling better tho?”
You: “yeah, but like, my throat is still kind of shitty”
Mark: “oh, if you want, I have a couple of friends who might be able to cook something up for your throat”
Mark: “I’d offer to make something, but Kun doesn’t let me in the kitchen anymore after finding out about the egg incident”
You: “the egg incident?”
Mark: “I can’t cook, like. at all.”
You: “I think I’m good, I was just gonna go get some tea to make it less scratchy or something”
Mark: “I can walk you?”
You: “sure”
so you two go to a cafe or something for you to get some warm tea and you two end up talking and you get to know each other a bit
and then you end up trading numbers and you make some time together
since Mark doesn’t have to go to practice until the next season, his time has opened up considerably
sometimes you study together
other times, you go check out some other places nearby campus
(eventually, you did get to try Taeyong, Jaehyun, and Kun’s food, to which there was no turning back at that point bc they make the best kind of food—free)
you’re basically dating at this point and his friends know you as his significant other so
Chenle: “is (Y/N) gonna be here?”
Mark: “no? it’s our movie night”
Donghyuk: “aren’t you dating tho?”
Mark: “what”
he told you he took it casually and cool, but considering how red his ears were getting when he told you………………. cute
Mark: “c-can you believe they thought we were dating?”
You: “is that not what we’re doing?”
Mark: “what?”
you both established your relationship after that and Mark got a lot more shy and it’s super adorable bc it makes you wanna take care of him and ugh
he’s precious okay
also cut to him trying to ask the other guys for advice, but then he gets embarrassed as Johnny and Ten tries to educate him about love
or how Lucas gives him cheesy lines to use on you
these boys are having a field day and Xiaojun and Doyoung have never felt more at peace
anyways
def the nervous type that he can’t even hold your hand and keeps asking if it’s okay
so you’re the top of this relationship bc he’s a shy lil boy
after a bit tho, he gets more comfortable and it’s great
he’ll get teased often right? when it happens in front of you, he just runs to you with a whine of your name and buries his face into your neck
and you end up yelling at someone
it’s cute tho
bc they def see you both as an adorable couple
when the hockey season starts rolling around again, you def spend more time at the practices—whether you’re there to watch, do your homework, or just help motivate him to play better
you started dressing up more too, especially since he gave you his jersey so you started wearing them to the games (and also face paint bc Jungwoo had some extra for an unknown reason)
and you make Mark Lee signs and it’s super cute
Sicheng also invites you to the afterparty dinners bc why not
also, remember that thing I said about watching figure skaters?
you two watch the Olympics for that and it’s like tradition now for you two to settle in front of the tv with snacks and watch them skate
so, since he’s an athlete, he has to be careful with his body bc then like scholarship will go poof
that means some of your dates might be physically limited
like he’ll go mini-golfing with you, but he can’t go to like self-defense classes with you
he’ll go to support you but if his foot gets busted, his coach and the rest of the team will be on his ass and he feels a bit bad about it but like you understand
considering that you absolutely refuse to get on the ice bc hockey is hard people
speaking of hockey, you told Mark he’s hot when he plays and he was FLUSHED
bc like the look in his eyes and the way he carries himself…. reminds you of when you’re doing some more………...steamy activities
anyways, stan Mark Lee
he’s a sweetheart who works so hard and you’re there to provide him with lots of love

Dean wasn’t easily impressed these days, but even he had to admit that the tree growing out of the grave was unlike anything he’d come across before. The historic cemetery in the middle of Missouri had its fair share of trees, but they had come here for this one. Cas stood next to him looking like he was attempting to interrogate the tree with his mind. For a moment Dean was distracted by the angel, smiling a bit at the memory of the time Cas had insisted on interrogating a cat. Luckily, Cas had gotten better at blending in, so at least he wasn’t actively asking the tree questions. There was the sound of someone clearing their throat to Dean’s other side and Dean directed his attention back to the cemetery’s caretaker, Mrs. Paige.
“I’m not sure why the FBI would be interested in something like this.” The older woman sniffed and looked at both Cas and Dean suspiciously. Dean turned on the charm and gave her a warm smile.
“Unfortunately, we aren’t at liberty to discuss the details of the case, but we’d appreciate anything you can tell us about this tree Mrs. Paige, or the woman who was killed, Louisa Abbot.”
We’d also like any information you might have on the person who was buried here,” Castiel interrupted. “Most of the marker seems to be missing, perhaps destroyed by the sudden growth of this tree.”
“Well, I can certainly get you the information on who was buried here, this was one of our more famous gravesites. The man buried here died in the early 1800s, he is one of two Revolutionary War veterans laid to rest in the cemetery, his name was William Abbot. I believe he held the rank of Captain. The Boone Historical Society may have more information about him, but he is one of the earliest burials in the cemetery and a lot of those records have been lost over the years.” Mrs. Paige chewed on her lower lip for a moment, staring along with Dean at the tree once again. “The tree will have to be removed to restore Captain Abbot’s grave.”
“Was Captain Abbot an ancestor of the victim?” Cas’ question caught Dean off guard. There was something strangely mesmerizing about the massive twisting trunk rising out of the ground exactly where the remains of Captain Abbot would have been. Dean registered that Cas and the caretaker were continuing to talk, but Dean stepped away to examine the tree more carefully. It’s roots, on the surface at least, didn’t seem to spread out much. Rather they seemed to go straight down into the Earth. Its trunk was thick enough to have been there for hundreds of years despite having only appeared a few days ago. The tree itself was knotted in appearance, with ugly, twisted branches shooting out in all directions. For some reason it occurred to Dean that the tree looked like it was screaming in pain. Dean jumped when he suddenly felt Cas’ hand on his shoulder.
“Dean. Are you listening?” Dean pulled his eyes away from the tree and turned towards Cas who continued to keep his hand on Dean’s shoulder.
“Ah, no, sorry. This,” Dean waved vaguely at the impressive scene before them, “is kind of distracting.” Cas nodded seriously. Dean noticed that the caretaker had left, but was distracted again by Cas pulling his hand back. They always touched a bit longer than was probably normal, but Dean still regretted the loss of the warmth on his shoulder.
“Mrs. Paige said that the victim may have been a descendant of Captain Abbot, but she wasn’t sure. She suggested the Historical Society again, if we needed further information. She did say that she knew Louisa Abbot when she was a teenager. She was one of several teenagers she used to call the police on for breaking into the cemetery after hours to party. Mrs. Paige said she hadn’t really seen her in more recent years.
“Is there any way to tell if the good Captain is still here?” Dean waved towards the roots of the tree. Cas shook his head. “Ah well, I’d be surprised if they were still here. I guess we better find out what exactly Louisa Abbot was into.” They started walking back towards the car.
“I agree. I’d also like more information on the tree. I know it’s a type of elm, but I’m not sure of the significance, if there is any.”
“Call Sam and get him to work on it.” Cas let out an exasperated huff in response to Dean’s delegation of research to his brother.
“Dean. The entire reason we are here without Sam is so he can rest. He needs to sleep to get over the flu, especially since he refused to let me heal him. I am more than capable of finding the information, perhaps while you visit the historical society.”
“Alright. You want me to drop you off at the library?”
“That would be acceptable.” Cas paused to look out over the cemetery again before opening the passenger side door of the Impala. Dean noticed the angel’s hesitation.
“Everything okay man?” Castiel turned towards Dean upon hearing his words and Dean notices the sadness that ghosts across the angel’s face. “Seriously, Cas, what’s going on with you? You seem more, I dunno, out of it than usual.”
“I – this place is a lot like the cemetery where Mary was originally buried. I don’t like the memory of you leaving to die.” Cas looks away abruptly and climbs into the passenger seat. Dean is at a loss for words, so he doesn’t say anything at all. He drops Cas off at the library with all the things left unsaid hanging between them.
***
It’s off season for the small college town, most of the students having gone home for winter break, so the hunters end up with better than normal accommodations. Dean is more than happy to discover a decent grill-themed restaurant practically in the parking lot of their hotel, and Cas is happy to wait until his companion is content with food before telling him what he’d found during his time in the library. Dean talks ideally about the pie store the server had told him about, wondering if they’ll have time to check it out before they leave. Cas lets Dean talk, he finds himself still grateful that he can have these moments, he truly thought he was going to lose him in the attempt to destroy Amara.
Ever since Castiel’s brief time as a human he’s found that the emotions he’d been slowly acquiring over the years have amplified at a rate that he has had difficulty adjusting to. He’d hoped at the beginning that regaining his grace would have given him back some of the control that had spiraled away from him, but he can’t help but dwell on almost losing Dean.
When they reach their room, Dean opts to take a shower before swapping case notes so Cas tries to take that time to compose himself. When given moments away from Dean, where there is a chance for quiet, the angel forces himself to let the feelings he has for the infuriating man wash over him. He lets himself feel the pain at having to let him go up against Amara alone. He lets himself feel the overwhelming joy at seeing him alive once again. He lets himself feel how much he’s fallen in love with the beautiful human being. He recalls talking to Anna at the beginning of what would become his fall, her telling him it only gets worse. He has no doubt now that she wasn’t just referring to his struggle with doubt. An angel that can feel things akin to a human can easily become overwhelmed. They were not built for these sensations, and so, every time Castiel lets go to indulge in the wash of his emotions he pulls on his grace and works to reign them in one at a time. By the time Dean emerges from the shower Castiel has regained some semblance of stoicism.
“So, this lady at the historical society was great. She apparently teaches genealogy classes for free to the public or something, so she was able to pull up the victim’s ancestry pretty fast. Captain Abbot was her ancestor all right, so at least we have that connection. Couldn’t find much out about the family besides that, so we should talk to Louisa’s next of kin tomorrow. I think the police report said she had a sister locally.” Castiel agrees to the plan and pulls out some information he had printed at the library.
“The tree is called a ‘Wych Elm’ and is a common wood used to build coffins, which may explain it’s presence. It’s possible, if Captain Abbot’s coffin was made from this wood, that whatever spell was cast had the side effect of growing a new tree from the wood.” Dean raises his eyebrows skeptically when Cas shares this information.
“It’s called a witch elm Cas; do you really think it’s there because of the coffin wood?” Castiel rolls his eyes at his companion.
“W-Y-C-H Dean, not witch. It means pliable, it’s named for the characteristic of the wood. But no, to answer your question. I doubt it has anything to do with the coffin wood. It’s not a tree common to this area.” Dean waves his hand to indicate Castiel should continue. “You are not the only one to mistake the name of the tree for something else. More recent lore does associate the tree with actual witches as many of them seem to like these trees as ritualistic sites. The rest of the lore associates them with melancholy and death, especially because the trees are known for unexpectedly dropping branches and injuring the unsuspecting people standing below them.”
“Yeah, okay. Does that mean that Louisa was some sort of witch, and grew the tree there on purpose?” Cas thinks about Dean’s suggestion for a few moments.
“Possibly. The other thing these trees are known for is guarding the entrance to Hades, so it may also be a result of an attempt to raise the dead. I cannot be certain as this seems unlike any other necromantic ritual I’ve heard of. I am also uncertain at to the motivation of raising someone who died over two centuries ago, as the more recent dead are usually preferrable to necromancers.”
“Alright, well there’s not much more we can do tonight.” Castiel nods and watches Dean dig through his bag. Dean hesitates for a moment and Castiel begins to wonder if he forgot something at the bunker. Dean shakes his head and pulls a bundle out of his bag, tossing it to Castiel.
“Here, I forgot I brought this for you.” Dean looks expectantly at the angel as Cas looks at the material in his hands.
Clothing? Dean, I have no need to change clothes.” Castiel’s confusion is evident on his face. Dean sighs rubs the back of his neck.
“I know man. Just try though, you’re more human-like than before with Heaven losing power. I know you don’t want to talk about it, but I noticed that you eat more often, and even sleep sometimes. I think you’ll actually appreciate relaxing in something that isn’t a suit and trench coat.” Cas looks at the clothing in his hands, dismayed that Dean has seen the weakening of his connection to Heaven. He hadn’t wanted Dean to think him less capable but at the same time he’s touched by the thought the man had put into the angel’s situation.
“Thank you, Dean. I will try.” Castiel goes into the bathroom to change and when he emerges, he finds Dean sitting on one of the beds flipping through TV channels. Dean slides over, indicating that Cas should sit down as the TV is only visible from the one bed. Dean complains that the only thing on is a Law & Order marathon because the hotel doesn’t have a streaming service on the TV. Cas doesn’t mind though, sharing the bed to watch television gives him an excuse to watch over Dean as he sleeps without Dean complaining about it. Even nicer is how Dean falls asleep gradually in the middle of an episode and doesn’t seem to notice how he curls into Cas’ side as he does it. Cas smiles and allows his feelings to wash over him again as he thinks about how the softer PJs must be more comfortable for Dean to lay on.
***
The following evening found the hunter and the angel at a place called Warm Springs Ranch. When they called Louisa’s sister, she told them she could talk during her break. The ranch ran some sort of Christmas event and Janice Abbot was one of the people in charge of it. Dean tried to play it cool, but he couldn’t help getting a bit excited over the chance to see the Budweiser Clydesdales. He did remind Cas that interrogating the horses was unnecessary to which he had received one of the angel’s full body eyerolls. Dean would never admit it out loud, but he really enjoyed Cas’ sarcasm. He thought the eyerolling was kind of adorable.
Dean hadn’t meant to spend last night half snuggling with his best friend, but Cas didn’t seem to mind so he wasn’t going to worry about it. Dean figured his secret crush on the guy was his problem, not the angel’s – as long as it didn’t mess up their friendship it wasn’t worth agonizing over.
They had unexpectedly spent the morning at the morgue. There was another strange death last night, something had eaten the victim’s spleen. They’d only received a call about it because the original victim, Louisa, had also been missing her spleen along with several other organs and most of her blood. If it was the same creature it certainly seemed to enjoy the bloodier organs of the body. The only other thing the victims had in common was proximity to the cemetery. The most recent victim had visited the cemetery the previous day according to her wife.
After that trip, they had gotten access to Louisa’s duplex and were now in agreement that she had been a practicing witch dabbling in necromancy. Cas had been on the phone with Rowena during the drive to the ranch giving her a rundown on the information they had in the hopes that she could help then understand more of what was going on. Eventually Cas had given in and called Sam, admitting that the younger Winchester had a much easier time getting Rowena’s cooperation.
When they finally arrived at the front of the line of cars entering the ranch, Dean began to understand why there was a crowd. The lights draped everywhere were impressive and Dean was happy to note that Cas seemed taken in by the display. It always cheered Dean up to see Castiel happy, it felt like those instances were all too rare in their line of work. Dean and Cas showed their badges at the entrance and asked where they could find Janice. They were directed to a side road for staff and Dean noticed the small frown of Cas’ face.
“Hey, want to ask if we can drive through the light display if we have time before we leave? It looks kinda awesome.” Castiel didn’t exactly smile but Dean could tell the suggestion pleased him. Dean wasn’t always sure why, but he was much better at reading Castiel than anyone else. Dean drove around to the back to park his car in what he assumed was the employee parking lot. They made their way through the staff entrance and asked around until they found Louisa’s sister.
“I honestly don’t know what I can tell you guys that I haven’t already told the other cops. I’m sorry she’s dead but Louisa and I were not close. She and I have barely spoken since we were kids. She was friends with some really weird people and did a lot of drugs when we were younger. I’m really not surprised she ended up dead in a cemetery.” Janice was clearly frustrated at her sister’s death and the notoriety it had brought with it. They did manage to find out the names of some of the ‘weird’ friends Louisa hung out with but beyond that she had been more than happy to offer them free access to the Christmas event just to be rid of them.
Dean was fairly certain the interview had been a dead end outside of assuring himself the sister wasn’t also a witch, but he didn’t feel their time had been wasted as he watched Cas roam through the stables. Cas attracted the few colts in residence leading to the kids in attendance following him around so they could see the young horses up close. Dean felt a soft warmth spread out from his chest as he watched his best friend talk with both the children and the colts. The children didn’t think anything of Cas having conversations with horses.
They eventually made their way back to the car and drove through the light display. Maybe they should have talked about the case, but Dean didn’t want to ruin the moment. Cas gazed out at the decorations with a look of quiet contentment on his face and Dean reached for the angel’s hand without thinking about it. Cas threaded his fingers through Dean’s without even turning away from the window.
Later that night, after grabbing burgers at a drive thru, they poured through the case notes together hoping to find something they had been missing. Dean didn’t even remember falling asleep until he woke up to Cas rolling him onto a pillow and laying a blanket on him. He mumbled a drowsy thank you and sunk into a dreamless slumber.
***
Cas thought that maybe it was a mistake, but after last night he didn’t want to be away from Dean. Once he had pulled a blanket over his exhausted friend, Cas changed into the pajamas Dean had given him again and laid down beside him. He stayed above the covers and just watched Dean sleep. He didn’t tell Dean anymore that he’d watch over him as he didn’t enjoy being called creepy. Dean didn’t seem to understand that watching was part of who Castiel was as an angel. While he had rebelled and fallen it didn’t change his need to watch over the man he pulled out of hell. It would be like going to long without air for a human. Cas needed to watch Dean, to protect him, to assure himself that he was safe.
He noticed Dean shivering despite the blanket draped over him and Castiel found himself giving into another impulse that he wasn’t sure Dean would appreciate. He pulled on the smallest amount of his grace to give some substance to his wings and dropped one of them on top of the man he loved. They were broken and battered, but over the years they had healed enough to fill out a bit. Dean quieted as he felt the weight of the wing, and Cas saw a small smile ripple across his face. The angel would just have to pull his wings back from the physical realm before Dean woke up, but it was worth the grace to keep Dean more comfortable as he slept.
***
Dean opened his eyes in the morning to find a sleeping angel next to him. He froze as soon as he saw Cas there, more worried that the angel had fallen asleep than about the fact that Dean was all to happy to wake up to his best friend lying beside him. He reached over to see if he could wake Cas up and ran into – feathers? Dean quickly rubbed his hands over his face and woke up more definitively. Yup, those were feathers. Large, gorgeous, black feathers that shimmered like obsidian in the sunlight. It was as if every color that had ever existed had come together to create the shimmering black of Castiel’s wings. While concerned about why Cas was sleeping and why his wings were manifested when Dean had only ever seen shadows, Dean couldn’t help but be enthralled with the things. His hand reached out to pet the one blanketing him before he actually thought about it. He had just enough time to appreciate how amazingly soft they felt before Castiel awoke with a gasp. The wing pulled back suddenly and Cas was sitting up staring at Dean in shock.
“Sorry, sorry! Did I hurt you? I didn’t mean anything by it, they were just so amazing… I’m so sorry Cas!” Dean held up his hands trying to placate the angel as he also sat up. Cas looked at his wings as if he had just realized they were physically present. Surprise travelled over his features and with a roll of Cas’ shoulders the wings disappeared. Dean tried not to look as disappointed as he felt. Cas turned back to Dean and briefly touched his jaw.
“It’s alright Dean. I was just surprised. They were manifested more than I intended and the sensation of you touching them was unexpected.”
               “Did I hurt you?”
“No, like I said it was just unexpected, not harmful. I apologize, I didn’t mean for them to be out for so long.” Dean was surprised to note that Cas looked embarrassed.
“I – I’m glad I got to see them. They’re fucking awesome Cas, the shadows were badass enough, but wow. If I had known you could manifest them like that, I’d have been begging you to show me for years.” Cas laughed and the tension between them evaporated. Dean got ready in the bathroom and found Cas back in his regular clothing hanging up the phone when he’d finished brushing his teeth.
“Rowena thinks she knows what happened, or at least some of it. She’s not completely sure about the role of the Wych Elm, but she did say that it’s likely we will need to use wood from the tree to kill the creature that was raised.”
“Did she say what it is?” Cas nodded in response to Dean’s question.
“She thinks Louisa was trying to make her own vampire. Ties of blood are necessary for control and the age of the corpse increases the power of the risen dead in a ritual like this. Rowena said that no one tries this type of thing though, because the amount of power and control needed are astronomical. She said she wouldn’t try it herself, that there are easier ways to get a loyal servant. Then she said something about how maybe Louisa didn’t have the ‘assets’ Rowena had?” Dean broke into laughter and Cas tilted his head in puzzlement. Dean always enjoyed Cas’ air quotes.
“Don’t worry about it, Cas. Okay, so Louisa was trying to make her own breed of vampire.”
“It would seem so. Obviously, she wasn’t successful, and not just in regards to her lack of control. Whatever the creature technically is, it’s not just drinking blood.” Dean chewed over Cas’ words as the angel did something on the laptop. All Dean could think is that this thing seemed to be some sort of zombie vampire. It didn’t really make a difference though, as long as they had a way to kill it. Or re-kill it as it were.
“So, Rowena said we can use the Wych Elm wood to kill the thing?” Cas didn’t even look up from the screen to answer Dean’s question.
“Not exactly. She said it had to be the specific tree that grew out of the grave. She also said it wouldn’t be enough by itself. I’m looking at the spell now.” Dean decided to leave Cas to it and work on getting their gear together. It was still a vampire after all, even if it was some sort of mutant version.
“Dean. I think this will work. Dead man’s blood should still help to incapacitate it. We also need the ashes of it’s creator and the blessing of the divine.” Dean widened his eyes at that list, but he supposed it was doable. They could steal Louisa’s body from the morgue if necessary. “We use the spell to seal the ingredients into the wood of the elm. Then we have to stab the creature with the elm wood through its heart.”
“So, we have to stake the vampire? Seriously?” Dean was amused at the idea of staking a vampire actually working.
“Yes, Dean. Afterwards I’d still suggest decapitation and burning whatever is left, just to make sure it stays dead.” Cas closed the laptop and pushed it aside.
“Sure. You have a plan for blessing of the divine?” Cas smiled at Dean.
“That’s easy enough.” Cas didn’t even warn Dean, one moment he’s standing there looking at the angel expectantly, the next he has a faceful of feathers.
“Um, I thought you didn’t want me touching them.” Dean couldn’t see Castiel, but he could hear him snickering. Dean pushed the wing away from his eyes in time to see Cas laughing at him.
“I said it was unexpected, not that I minded you touching. Anyway, this will work.” Dean watches as Cas runs his finger through the feathers and finds one that comes loose. In between one blink and the next the wings are hidden once again. Cas hold a single feather in his hand, the echo of his earlier laughter still present in his smile.
“What about the ashes? Do we need to break into the morgue?”
“We don’t need a specified amount; we can get away with most anything. Maybe just hair or something small, we needn’t steal an entire corpse.” Dean sighs in relief, that’s one less complication.
“Well let’s head out then, I’d like this taken care of before sunset. Wait, how are we going to find the thing anyway? You think it’s prowling around the cemetery?” Cas nods.
“Yes, Dean. Rowena seems to think it’s probably tied to the elm and with the other victim also being close to the area I’m inclined to agree with her. Using the tree for the spell may even be enough to draw it to us. If you want to drop me off at the cemetery, I can start preparing everything while you get the ashes.” Dean agrees and grabs his keys.
***
Cas is somewhat relieved to be dropped off at the cemetery. While Dean hadn’t reacted poorly to being draped in an angel wing this morning, or the fact that Cas was asleep in the same bed, he couldn’t help feeling that he had been pushing things too far. He hadn’t meant to fall asleep while also solidifying his wings. He needed to conserve his grace for more important tasks. While Castiel was truly content to just be a part of Dean’s life it was difficult to remind himself that he could not have more, especially with his poor control over the very human-like emotions he now experienced. What was really tipping him over the edge though, was how Dean kept reacting. Dean did not react with anger or defensiveness when he found himself in situations that hinted of a more intimate relationship with Cas. He acted as if it were normal and even welcome. It surprised Cas, but it also gave him some of the hope that he had never really allowed himself to have. It was distracting, which made it all the better that he would be prepping the spell by himself.
Cas collected a branch from the Wych Elm growing out of Captain Abbot’s grave, mindful of the tree’s reputation for dropping branches on unsuspecting passersby. Then Cas took a few moments to make sure the caretaker knew that he and his partner may be around afterhours because of the attack yesterday and was happy to find out that she had already decided to stay with a friend until she felt safer. Cas made quick work of the elm branch, pleased with how easy it was to shape into a stake. The sun would set soon so Castiel got to work engraving the sigil they would need directly into the tree trunk. Once Dean brought the last ingredient it should only take them a few minutes to complete everything. With any luck the vampire would come to them.
He was so absorbed in creating the sigil that he almost didn’t hear the movement behind him in time.
***
As usual, things had not gone according to plan. Dean had arrived to see Cas holding the mutant-vamp at bay, but clearly struggling to gain an upper hand over the creature they didn’t yet have the means to kill. Dean knew better than to jump into the middle of that fight, it was more important to finish Rowena’s spell. He dumped the ashes in with the rest of the material. Luckily Cas had left a copy of the actual spell out by the bowl with all the ingredients. The incantation was pretty straightforward and Dean quickly scooped up the resulting concoction on two fingers and began filling in the sigil carved into the tree. Dean picked up the branch Cas had sharpened into a stake and touched it to the sigil, running through the incantation one more time. In a brief flash of light, the sigil was absorbed into the stake.
“Cas!” Dean threw the stake towards the angel who managed to catch it neatly without even looking. Ducking down as the creature threw itself towards him, Cas pushed the stake up and underneath the monster’s rib cage with more force than a normal human could have managed. Dean breathed a sigh of relief too early, the vamp surged back up and made another run at the rapidly tiring angel.
“Rowena may have overlooked something.” Cas sounded remarkably composed considering how ragged he looked. Dean looked around them desperately for something they had missed. Then he saw how the tree was shivering and pulsing as if trying to reach out to the vampire. Of course!
“Hey asshole, leave my goddamn angel alone!” Dean knew the shotgun wouldn’t work against the creature but it got his attention, and with the impact to its shoulder and the stake still protruding from its ribcage the monster snarled as it barreled towards Dean. Dean was backed up against the tree as Cas turned on him with a horrified look on his face.
“DEAN!” Cas sounded both angry and devastated as he chased after the vampire, but Dean just yelled out instructions, all too aware what this probably looked like from Cas’ point of view.
“Stake it to the tree!” Cas caught on quick and as Dean threw himself out of the way Cas leapt after the thing that had once been Captain Abbot. Cas reached down to where the stake was sticking out and wrenched until the creature’s back was on the trunk of the Wych Elm. Pushing off from the ground Cas slammed the stake further in, until the vampire was stuck to the tree. It screeched as light pulsed from the stake into the tree. The Wych Elm seemed to come to life as it collapsed in on itself, dragging the mutant-vamp back to wherever the tree had come from. Within moments all that was left was a broken gravestone.
“Huh. Guess we don’t have to worry about burning it,” Dean quipped. Castiel rounded on him, clearly not feeling amused.
“What were you thinking? What if I hadn’t been fast enough?” Dean let Castiel rant at him for a few moments, standing up and dusting off the dirt from the back of his jeans.
“I’m sorry, man. I didn’t want to tip it off.”
“So instead, you made it look like you were drawing it away from me? Getting yourself killed for me!?” Castiel’s eyes flashed dangerously blue.
“Yeah, and it worked. For the record, I’d have done that even if it wasn’t to trick the thing though. Better me than you.” Dean was maybe angrier than he expected. He realized he’d been worried about how long Cas would last against that thing as he noted cuts that weren’t healing and the way the angel was swaying as he tried to hold himself upright. He also noticed that the blue in Cas’ eyes was in no way diminishing as he glowered at Dean.
“You. Are. Absurd. You are worth everything to me.” Then, rather abruptly, Cas fell over. Dean’s heart was pounding in his ears, both from what the angel had said and the sudden alarm he felt at a cosmic being fainting. He pulled Cas up into his arms, and damn, he was heavier than Dean had expected. Not just the muscle that Dean could feel, but he idlily wondered if the wings somehow added weight. Either way, Dean eventually made it back to their hotel room, although his back wouldn’t thank him for it later.
***
Cas woke up in the pajamas Dean had given him with an arm thrown over his chest. Confused, Cas turned slowly and realized that they were back in the hotel and Dean was asleep beside him, curled around the angel’s torso. As small rays of sunlight peeked through the curtains Cas could see his normal clothing folded nearby on a chair. He noticed that the wounds his grace hadn’t healed yet had been cleaned and bandaged, and that the blanket was pulled up around both him and Dean. As Dean let out a contented sigh in his sleep and burrowed closer, Castiel thought that perhaps he too was worth everything to someone. Smiling the angel allowed himself to drift back to sleep, happily thinking about how Dean had told the vampire to stay away from “his” angel.

sick (of you)
pike jj x reader
Tumblr media
cody and jj are idiots, you have to deal with it
pre-relationship - sorry but i’m sure y’all knew it was coming eventually
(warnings: cursing, zero? editing)
“I told you,” you paced, “I literally told you fucking idiots that it was a dumb idea. And did you listen to me? Of course not. Don’t know why, I’m clearly the smartest one in the group.”
JJ was sitting on the couch, arms crossed petulantly, frowning, until he couldn’t hold his breath any longer and had to open his mouth to breathe.
“Fucking mouth breather,” you muttered. “Hey,” JJ protested, sounding stuffy, “it’s not my fault, it’s Tyler’s. He’s the one that challenged us in the first place.”
“And if Tyler challenged you to jump off a cliff,” you started, only to be interrupted by the man himself.
“Now there’s an idea.”
“No,” you glared at him, “no dying on my watch.”
“Simply do not watch,” he shrugged.
Ignoring him, you went on, “Now all you idiots are sick and who has to house you for the time being? Me. Because the rest of the house kicked you out so you didn’t spread it to all of them.”
“I really don’t think we would,” Cody spoke up for the first time.
“I really think you would, boys are fucking gross as it is.”
“Yet here you are,” JJ smirked.
“Only because I love you guys, I wouldn’t otherwise.”
“Hmm, I disagree, you’re simply the best of us.”
“Well I certainly suppose that’s the truth,” you decided to take the compliment even though Cody was clearly just buttering you up.
You sighed, as JJ coughed pathetically, “Some soup would be awesome,” he suggested.
“Sure. I’ll order some from Panera. Then Tyler can babysit while I take a shower.”
“Woah,” Tyler held his hands up, “why do I have to babysit?”
“You’re the reason they jumped into the pool in 20 degree weather asshole. Reap what you sow,” you pointed at him accusingly.
He sighed, put upon, “Fine.”
“You guys are just lucky Zach is out of town because if he weren’t and I couldn’t see him until you fools get better, I’d be mad.”
“Where’s Zach?” JJ asked, sitting up.
“He’s with his parents for the next two weeks. He’s coming back straight after Christmas.”
Cody waved his hand, “It’s fine, we’ll FaceTime him eventually.”
-
Tyler left after a day because he didn’t want to get sick. He said it wasn’t his fault they forgot to get their flu shots. Which, to be fair, it wasn’t yours either, but you were nice enough to let them crash on an air mattress in your living room for the time being.
And to your fear, they got stir crazy quick. Cody was the first to start whining, “We’ve literally watched everything on Netflix.”
You raised your eyebrows, “They literally posted a new season of Criminal Minds yesterday that we haven’t even started yet. I’m literally waiting on you hand and foot. Not getting paid and risking my health. What the fuck could you possibly be complaining about?”
Cody did at least have the decency to look a little chargrained, “You’re right, I’m sorry.”
You sighed, thinking a few seconds, “I could paint your nails if you want.”
JJ brightened immediately, “Yes please. Can you do Christmas colors? Tis the season and whatnot.”
Standing from the couch, you shrugged, “Unsure, let me go check what colors I have.”
There was no green, but you did have red and white, JJ hummed, “Candy cane. Good enough for me.”
“I’m not doing stripes,” you warned, “but I’ll alternate fingers.”
“Deal.”
So you settled in, all three of you on the floor, and started the new season of Criminal Minds. It started quiet, but Cody got antsy quickly and started talking, “So, how are things with you and Zach?”
“Good,” you answered, tongue sticking out a bit in focus, “I talked to him last night. Things are going well at home. As well as can be at least.”
JJ knew nothing about Zach’s home life and the pressure his family but on him, but Cody did, so he nodded understandingly, “Fuck, well I’m glad it’s not a total shitshow.”
“Yeah. When he gets back we’re celebrating our anniversary. It was actually a few weeks ago, but obviously finals and now he’s not here so.”
“Oh yeah, what are you getting him?” JJ asked eagerly, crossing his legs and leaning forward on his elbows.
Your cheeks heated up, “It sounds so dumb, but I was planning for the main gift to be me telling him that I love him.”
Cody cooed and JJ wrinkled his eyebrows, “You haven’t told him yet?”
Sighing, you looked up at him, “No, why?”
“Has he told you?”
“Well, yeah.”
JJ hummed, “I see.”
Defensively, you crossed your arms, “I’m not obligated to tell him just because he’s told me. That’s not how relationships work.”
JJ’s eyebrows shot up and he held his hands out, “Hey, not accusing. Just wondering. It’s not personally how I’d like things to be done.”
You scoffed, slamming the cap back into the nail polish bottle, “Well guess what, you not only have zero say in my relationship, you also have zero control over me or my feelings. Zach and I have talked about it and turns out he’s not a selfish dickhead and understands where I’m coming from.”
Cody raised his eyebrows at your snap and put a hand on your shoulder, “Help us understand, sweetheart. Talk it out.”
Without meaning to, you teared up, frustrated that you had to defend yourself to two boys who didn’t really need to know, but you were going to do it anyway.
“I don’t want to say I love you to someone until we’ve been dating at least a year. Because love is a choice, feelings of attraction are how two people get together, but feelings fade, ask literally any girl. Based on how you know that person, you choose to keep being with them. You choose to love them despite their flaws, despite their mistakes, and despite the things you may not like so much about them.”
You paused, taking a shuddering breath and blinked back the tears, “And once I’ve chosen that person for a year and they’ve chosen me. Then I’ll say it. Because being in love with someone isn’t something I just take flippantly, it’s not just a word to casually throw around. It means something to me. So I’m sorry if my reasoning isn’t up to your standards.”
They were both quiet for a moment, JJ wouldn’t meet your eyes, but Cody lunged forward, wrapping his arms around you tightly. For a split second, you melted into it before realizing he was there because he had the flu and jerked away.
Face hot you stood up, “Finish your own nails, I’ll be in my room.”
Pacing a few times, you turned your phone over in your hands anxiously. You didn’t have anything to prove to them, you and Zach really had talked about it. But as tears rose in your eyes, and your throat tightened, you dialled the number.
Zach picked up on the second ring, greeting you breathlessly. You could hear the smile on his lips and had to wonder how the fuck you deserved this sweet sweet boy. And it was very clear to you, you loved him, would keep choosing him because no one else knew you quite like him, not even your friends.
“Hey hon,” you managed to croak out.
He sounded concerned, “What’s wrong, sweetheart.”
“I just,” you paused and twisted your fingers in your shirt until you’d calmed down, “I wanted to let you know that I love you.”
Zach was quiet, stunned into it if you had to guess, and he eventually whispered back, “I love you too.”
It gave you enough relief to lay down and relax. The two of you spent the next few minutes catching up, and eventually went silent, listening to each other breathe.
“I missed you,” you whispered, and then a bit louder, “or I guess I should say miss.”
“I miss you too, so much. I want to see you, and my parents haven’t been,” he paused, looking for the word, “good enough to justify me staying here.”
You sat up, excited, “Seriously?”
“Seriously.”
“Oh my god. Okay, I’ll see you soon?”
“You absolutely will.”
When you walked back out to rejoin the boys, you felt significantly better. Sitting down, in the armchair instead of the couch with them like you had been, you told them cheerfully, “Better get well soon because Zach is coming home early, and I’m ready to see him.”
Cody cheered and JJ looked at you with a face you couldn’t quite figure out. After a few seconds, you got a bit annoyed, “What?”
“Nothing,” he mumbled, finally looking away.

Test Results, Part 3
Pairing: Castiel x Reader
You awoke to find a pair of ocean blue eyes gazing in your direction. You smiled in return at the handsome face of Castiel, your boyfriend of five years. It had been almost a year since his grace was stolen from him, turning him into a human. Even though he lost his grace, it did nothing to diminish your feelings for Castiel. You were more than happy to share your heart and your bed with the one you love, whether he was an angel or a human.
"Good morning, Honeybee," he said in his husky morning voice.
"Good morning, my angel," you returned. You reached up with your left hand to caress his cheek. Castiel closed his eyes as he leaned into your touch then he kissed your palm. He rose up on his left elbow, while the back of his right hand gently grazed your face.
"So beautiful...." he whispered, just before he swiftly captured your lips with his in a fiery, passionate kiss. You felt the depth of his love behind it, along with a hunger you had not known before from Cas. Your fingers threaded their way through his raven black hair, massaging with your fingertips, earning a groan of appreciation from Cas.
You tilted your head back to expose your graceful neck to him. Cas dropped a trail of soft kisses across your neck, while he took nips at the skin here and there. One of those nibbles turned into more of a love bite at that sweet spot where your neck meets your collarbone. You gasped at the sensation, knowing he'd left a mark for all to see.
"Marking your territory, my love?" you teased.
"I merely want the world to know that you are mine, sweetheart," he grinned. "I love you."
"And I am yours, Castiel. Now and forever, yours and only yours," you replied. "I love you, too. Shall we wander into the kitchen to make some breakfast?" you asked.
"Hmm. I think I'd rather stay right here," Cas said huskily. "I can't wait for breakfast to be made, I'm too hungry now," he growled playfully and pulled the covers over both of you. Then he took you down the path of sweet discovery, giving and taking pleasure in each other.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A couple of months later, you were in the laundry room and had just finished moving clothes from the washing machine to the dryer. Suddenly, you felt the urge to run to the bathroom, where you proceeded to lose your breakfast. Castiel heard you getting sick, and once he found you, he rubbed your back and held your hair out of the way.
"Are you all right, Honeybee? Can I get you anything?" he asked in a worried tone.
"I'm fine, Cas. I think it was just something I ate. Let me get cleaned up, wash my face and brush my teeth. Then we can maybe watch a movie?" you suggested.
Cas drew you into his arms and kissed your forehead. "As you wish, sweetheart. I'll get you a washcloth to clean up, then I'll meet you in the living room," he promised. You nodded and gave him a lingering kiss on the cheek, which brought out his megawatt smile.
As you were patting your face dry, you started to wonder what could have caused you to get sick like that. It wasn't flu season, and you didn't think it was food poisoning. Wait a minute...., you thought as you did the math in your head. Oh no. You gripped the edges of the sink and checked your reflection in the mirror. What am I going to do? you wondered.
You slowly walked out to the living room area to where Castiel was sitting on the couch. He watched as you carefully sat next to him and leaned your head on his shoulder. He put an arm around you, drawing you close and kissed your forehead. "Is everything okay? You seem like you are still not feeling well," Cas remarked.
"Just a little tired I guess," you replied. As the movie played on, you found yourself less and less interested. Your thoughts kept drifting back to earlier when you were washing your face.
Cas noticed that your full attention wasn't on the movie. He paused it, which caused you to look up at his intense blue eyes. "I may not be able to read your mind anymore, but I have a feeling that there is something occupying your thoughts," he remarked.
You hesitated before answering. "Do you ever think about children? Having them, I mean?" you asked timidly.
This time it was Castiel's turn to hesitate. "Not really. I mean, I love children, they're a gift from my Father. But as an angel, if I were to have a child with a human, for example, it wouldn't be well-received. A nephilim has great power, and there are those who would not treat it kindly or want to kill it. I couldn't take that chance with the child or its mother. Why do you ask?" he finished.
"Only curious, Cas. Don't get me wrong, I love being together with you, just the two of us. But, I also have thoughts about being a mother as well," you added.
"Honeybee, you would make a wonderful mother, if and when that time comes," Cas assured you. He pulled you onto his lap so you were straddling him. Your arms went around his neck, to pull him closer to you. Your lips crashed together in a series of hot, fervent kisses, trying to leave no territory untouched.
Cas rested his head on the back of the couch, granting you access to his neck. You worked your way across to his collarbone, taking playful nibbles at his skin along the way. When you reached his sweet spot, you turned the nibble into a love bite, leaving your mark. You pulled back a little to see his lust-blown pupils, which fueled your desire.
Suddenly, Cas flipped you around so you were on your back on the couch. He inched up on the hem of your T-shirt, little by little, dropping sweet kisses on your lower torso. Your hands tangled in his hair, lost in the feel of his lips on your exposed skin. "Sweetheart," he murmured against your stomach. "Come fly with me," he whispered. You nodded and followed him to your room, where you continued what had begun in the living room. Good thing you remembered to lock the door.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A week had passed, and your bouts of nausea had not improved. You quietly made a doctor's appointment so that you would know once and for all if you were pregnant or not. You slipped out of bed early in the morning without waking Cas. You left a love note for him to see when he first woke up.
At the doctor's office, they drew a sample of your blood and sent it to the lab for testing. About an hour later, the results were confirmed. Pregnant. You thanked the doctor, then sort of stumbled your way out of his office and out to your car. As you sat behind the wheel, contemplating your next move, your phone rang. Caller ID said it was Sam, so you picked up.
Sam asked where you were, and he told you that you needed to get back to the bunker right away. He said that it had to do with Cas, so you said you'd be there as soon as you could. You hung up your phone and quickly headed for the highway to home. When you got there, you demanded to know where Cas was.
"He's gone," Dean replied.
"Gone?!? What do you mean gone??" you cried.
"His grace was found and an angel returned it to him, so he's back to being an angel now," Sam explained.
"The 'courier' angel said that Cas was urgently needed in Heaven to help settle the civil war going on up there. They didn't know how long he'd be gone, either. Cas tried desperately to get the angel to wait until he could say goodbye to you, but they wouldn't," Dean said. "Where were you, anyway?" he asked.
"I-I was at the doctor's office. My nausea wasn't getting any better, so I made an appointment. At least I know what's causing it, though," you answered.
"Well, what is it?" Sam asked.
"I'm pregnant," you whispered. "And Castiel is the father." You looked from Sam to Dean and back again, then burst into tears. Both men rushed to your side and engulfed you in a hug. They each whispered soothing words in your ear, telling you everything would be fine. They promised to be with you every step of the way.
Although you appreciated their kindness, the one you wanted by your side through all of this was currently unavailable. You didn't get to say goodbye to him before he went back to Heaven. He didn't even know that he was going to be a father.
You broke out of their hug a bit to face them. "You guys can't tell Cas. He's got too much going on up there, and he needs to focus. I don't want to give him anything more to worry about or have as a distraction. Please?"
Sam and Dean looked at each other in silent communication. "You have to tell him. At some point anyway," Sam gently pleaded.
"Yeah, pretty soon, you're not going to be able to hide that, no matter how big of a hoodie you wear," Dean chimed in. You shot him a dirty look, which effectively silenced any further comment from him about your body.
"Well, I won't be hunting anymore, that's for sure. I'll hang back here and do the research for you guys, which should keep me out of trouble," you reasoned.
"What should we do if we need to call Cas for help, and he asks where you are?" Sam wondered.
"You'll just have to tell him....I don't know, something. Say that I'm not feeling well, or I went to visit a sick friend, something like that. Unless you think I should go to Donna's or Jody's until the baby is born?" you asked.
"We'll just have to play it by ear for now. In the meantime, can we get you anything? Pickles and ice cream?" Dean teased.
"How about some egg rolls from my favorite place in town?" you asked hopefully.
"You got it, sweetheart. I'll go and get that, then some more beer too. For me and Sam, though. Be back in a little while," Dean said as he kissed your forehead.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A month or so later, you had your first sonogram. Sam went with you, and thus he got to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time. You both had tears in your eyes at hearing the heartbeat from this miracle of life, growing and developing inside you. When the lab tech left the room so you could get changed back into your regular clothes, Sam turned to you.
"Thank you so much. It was a privilege to be here for that. Even though I know you'd rather have had Cas here, I'm honored that you chose to share that with me," Sam declared.
"You're welcome, Sam. You're right, I do wish he was here, but I had one of my best friends by my side. Thank you for agreeing to do this with me," you replied.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The next month wasn't quite so easy. Sam and Dean were on multiple hunts, sometimes back-to-back, so you had to go to your next doctor's appointment alone. You were kept busy with the research the boys needed, so that made time pass quickly.
Dean said that they had to call Cas in on a couple of cases, both for the extra manpower and for his healing capabilities. He said that Cas asked about you, and was genuinely disappointed that you hadn't come with them.
The civil war in Heaven was still going on, but Cas felt confident that it would be wrapped up soon. Cas asked the boys to tell you that he still loves you and can't wait to be with you again. Sam and Dean passed along the message and reminded you that you were going to have to tell Cas soon that he is going to be a father.
A couple of weeks later, you were in your chair, reading a book you had chosen from the library. Suddenly, you heard a whoosh of wings, and your beloved Castiel appeared. He wandered through the bunker, scanning for you. When his eyes locked onto yours, he ran towards you, reaching your position in three long strides. He cupped your face in both hands and drew you in for a long passion-filled kiss.
"Oh, Honeybee, how I have missed you. I couldn't stand to be away from you for one more minute. I love you so much," he gushed. "Is someone else here with you? I am detecting two heartbeats," he questioned. He looked down and saw that something about you had changed while he was gone. "Are you....is that....a baby?" he managed to ask.
You nodded, unable to speak at the moment. "I'm almost five months along now, Castiel. I'm so sorry that I wasn't here to say goodbye when you went back--" he cut you off.
"Whose baby is that?" he demanded.
"What?? Whose do you think it is?? Do you seriously not trust me to stay faithful to you, after everything we've been through?" you exclaimed.
He took a step closer to you, anger showing in his face. "Who is the father? Sam? Dean? Someone else?" he growled.
You looked him straight in the eye and said, "YOU are. This is your child. I got pregnant before you got your grace back, so this is a human baby not a nephilim. I can't believe this," you sobbed as you ran to your room.
Sam and Dean came down the spiral staircase in time to see you run off to your room in tears. They saw Cas sitting on the couch, his head in his hands. "Why didn't she tell me?" he wondered.
"Cas, buddy, she didn't find out for sure until the day you left to go back to Heaven," Dean explained. "She was at the doctor's office that day, getting a blood test for confirmation," he said.
"So, you and Sam have known? All this time? And didn't think to tell me?" Cas asked.
"I asked them not to," you replied. You walked over to the couch and sat down, but decided to keep your distance for the time being. "Cas, you were involved in a civil war up in Heaven. I knew you had a duty to fulfill. If I had told you that I was expecting your child, you wouldn't have been able to concentrate. You would have been too worried about me, which could have caused you to be distracted, then you could have been killed! I couldn't live with myself if that happened."
"You still should have found a way to tell me," Cas muttered. He swiftly rose from the couch. "I-I need to go somewhere and figure out what I'm going to do about all of this," he remarked.
"Cas, please don't go, you just got here! We can work this out together, just like we always have! I love you," you pleaded.
"I'm sorry," he replied and with a fluttering of wings, he was gone.
You sank onto the couch, too stunned to speak at first. Tears silently streamed down your cheeks as you realized that you may have just lost the love of your life, forever. In that moment, your heart broke a little more with the knowledge that your child may not get a chance to know its father. "Oh, Cas. I'm so sorry that I didn't tell you. I don't want to raise our child alone. I love you so much. Please come home," you whispered.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Another month went by, and still no word from Castiel. You prayed to him every night, begging him to come home, but he never appeared. Finally, one night, you made one of the hardest decisions of your life. You stopped praying to Cas, because you had decided to let him go. You would raise your child without him, and hope that wherever he is, he's happy.
Castiel was wandering around the hallways in Heaven. To the other angels, he looked like a shadow of his former self. He had a near-full beard, his clothes needed washing and he could benefit from a long, hot shower. The other angels steered clear of Cas, rather than risk his wrath at the slightest mistake.
Gabriel knew that Cas wasn't himself, and it was because he was heartbroken over you. The light was gone from Cas' eyes, and Gabriel knew only you could put it back. He asked Cas what had happened with the two of you. Cas explained about your last meeting and finding out about the baby. He assured Gabriel that it was conceived during the time he was human, so no nephilim to worry about.
"So, why aren't you down there with her right now, taking care of her?" Gabe asked.
"She withheld important information from me! She knew about the baby on the day I got back here to Heaven, and by the time I found out, she was almost five months along. Sam and Dean knew the whole time but didn't tell me, because she told them not to," he retorted.
"And why do you think she did that?" Gabriel wondered.
"She said....it was because I was up here, trying to stop the civil war. She thought that knowing about the baby would be a distraction, that I would worry too much," Cas replied.
"Would she have been right? If so, then she made her decision to withhold the information out of her love for you. She couldn't bear to have something happen to you if you were too worried about her and the baby on Earth," Gabriel explained. "Question is, do you still love her?" he asked.
A dawn of understanding came over Castiel and a smile crept across his face. "Of course I do! I love her with all of my heart. She's carrying my child, and I want to be there for the both of them," Cas declared.
"Good answer! I hereby discharge you from your heavenly duties to be with your true love and your child," Gabriel replied. Just then, they both felt a rumbling, and lights flickered for a few moments.
"What happened?" Cas asked.
"Uh oh. You'd better get cleaned up fast, my brother. That rumbling you felt? That's what happens when your soulmate lets you go," he explained sadly.
Cas hung his head. "She's been praying to me ever since I left, but I was too busy being hurt, that I didn't go to her," he remarked. "Time for that is over now. I have things to do," Cas said with a determined look on his face.
"Go get her, Castiel. Go get your soulmate back," Gabriel said softly.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Okay, I think I've got everything. I'll only be gone at Ruthie's for a few days, for the baby shower and hanging out with her. If you guys need anything, though, just call me and I'll come back," you said.
"Will you get going?" Dean chuckled. "This is your first real vacation since who knows when. You deserve this, so go have fun. Hope you get lots of cool baby stuff at the shower. Don't worry, Sam and I will be fine, we can do our own research," Dean assured you.
Sam put your bags in the trunk of your 1968 Chevy Nova. You climbed into the driver's seat as best you could, given your current condition. "I'll call you when I get there. See you in a few days," you promised. Sam and Dean each leaned in through the window and kissed your forehead, then waved as you drove away.
When Sam and Dean returned from the garage, they saw Castiel standing by the map table. They exchanged glances between them and kept walking to the kitchen, not saying a word to Cas.
"Where is she? I need to see her," Cas pleaded.
Sam and Dean both ignored Cas for the moment, too focused on fixing themselves a snack and getting something to drink. "I know you both can hear me. Please, I need to know where she is. We have unfinished business between us," Cas remarked.
Dean was the first to speak. "You should've taken care of that a month ago," he seethed. "Do you know what it's been like for her ever since you left? She prayed to you every night, Cas, crying and begging you to come back. Every night. But you never came."
Dean continued. "Sam and I nearly had to force her to eat, so that she kept her strength up for herself and the baby. We went to her doctor's appointments with her. All stuff you should have been doing, had you been here. So, excuse us if we don't feel like telling you right now where she is. You've hurt her enough," Dean retorted.
"I realize that I didn't handle the situation very well when I first found out. And you're right, I should have worked this out with her long ago. I'm here now, though, and I need your help. One thing I have to know, though," he gulped. "Does she still love me?" Cas asked in a small voice.
Sam and Dean looked at each other in silent communication. "Of course she does, Cas. You know she's not one to hold a grudge. But, you have to know, she's been hurt pretty deep. It's going to take something huge on your part to win back her heart," Sam explained.
Cas reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box. "I found this at a place that sells vintage jewelry. Do you think she will like it?" Cas asked.
The boys examined the contents. They both gave a low whistle in appreciation. "Cas, that's beautiful. Does this mean what I think it means?" Dean asked.
Cas grinned and nodded his head. "Will you help me? Please. I need her back in my life. I'm lost without her, and I want my child to know who his father is," he pleaded.
After a few agonizing seconds of exchanged glances, Sam and Dean nodded to signal that they were on board. "Okay, here's what we do," Dean grinned and rubbed his hands together conspiratorially.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Boys? I'm home! Can someone give me a hand with my bags?" you shouted but were greeted with silence. "You know, they can help me take them out to the car, but bringing them back in? Must be too much to ask," you grumbled aloud. "Guys? Where are you and why aren't the lights on?" you asked.
At that moment, the main part of the bunker was awash in twinkling fairy lights. Rose petals were strewn about on every flat surface. You heard soft music playing in the background as you slowly descended the stairs, leaving your bags for later.
You picked up a few rose petals and brought them to your nose to inhale their scent. As you put them down, the voice that you had been longing to hear for the past month broke the silence.
"Hello, Honeybee," Castiel said softly.
"Cas?" you whispered. "Is it really you? Where have you been?" you asked, your voice thick with emotion.
"It really is me, and I've been....hiding up in Heaven, I guess you'd say. I had some things to sort out in my head, things about us, and the baby. But by the time I finished doing that, I thought I'd been gone too long to come back. That maybe you wouldn't want me anymore."
Cas continued. "Sweetheart, I am so sorry for all the hurt I caused you by not coming home to you sooner. I hope you can find it in your heart to someday forgive me. I want us to be together, a family with you, me and the baby. I am lost without you, and I want our son to know his father. I love you with all of my heart," Cas finished.
As Castiel was giving his speech, he was slowly walking towards you, until he was standing directly in front of you. He could see the tracks of your tears, which he wiped away with his thumb. You closed your eyes and leaned into his touch, having missed it for so long.
"Cas....I've missed you so much. I prayed to you every night, but you never came. I thought that you didn't love me anymore, so I thought my only option was to let you go. I did that so that you would have a chance at happiness, even if it was with someone else," you explained.
"Honeybee, the only woman who has and will ever make me happy is you. In fact," he knelt down on one knee and withdrew the velvet box from his trench coat. "I have loved you from the moment I met you. You are kind, generous, funny and smart. Your outer beauty is only surpassed by your inner beauty. I can only hope to make you as happy as you have made me by being in my life. Will you marry me?" Cas asked.
He opened the box to reveal a simple yet gorgeous vintage engagement ring. Overcome by emotion and unable to speak for a few moments, you nodded your acceptance. "Yes! Yes, of course I will marry you! I love you, Castiel," you replied.
Cas took you in his arms and embraced you as carefully as he could, given the stage of your pregnancy. "Oh!" you felt a flutter in your belly that can only be described as your baby kicking. You placed Cas' hand on your stomach, just in time for the baby to kick again. A soft look of wonder crossed his face as a tear slipped down. "He knows who his daddy is, Cas," you explained.
He leaned down and kissed your belly. "Hello, little one. I'm your daddy. And even though we haven't met yet, I already know that I love you and would do anything for you." He turned to you with love shining in his eyes. "Thank you. You are my everything and I love you so much," he finished.
"I love you too, Castiel. Welcome home, my angel," you replied softly.

Chapter 1 “ Good days gone bad”
Poppy looks out of one of her windows that she got installed barely 3 weeks ago, its soft rain that gos pit patter on them tonight and normaly she would hum to the soft sound but she can’t find the strengt nor heart to do it. Her mind is filled with worry and guilt over the small body thats currently sleeping in a small borrowed bed that Smidge had been so kind to give her. * What am I do to now?* the words keeps runing around her head as she hears a small whimper coming from the bed. She truns around to look at them and walks over with soft steps and just stops at bedside, the little thing looks like they are not haveing the best of dreams. She could not blame them, she bet shes haveing them tonight as well once she finally finds sleep herself.
She slowly stroke the little things face, tears silent runing out of both closed eyes. One out of lost another out worry the next out of fear. A small boyish voice filled with sadness and longing asking for the one person thats never going to be able to anwser back ‘ grandma, where are you?’ It breaks her heart just hearing it.
‘Oh Branch, I’m so so sorry. I should’t have brought that stupid flower to the bunker, we should’t have.’ she says as she looks at her boyfriend, now in a body of a 6 year old, his skin grey as dark ash, hair black as coal and a fearfull frown onpond his little sleeping face. It still amazed her how bad everything had gotten just within 5 days, and it all started when he asked her a favor of just getting some stuff from the deep forest. How she just wish she’d could stop her past self from taking that damn flower or just give it to the herbalist before she and Hickory went to visit him. Maybe then neither of them wouldn’t feel so bad like they do now.
‘I’m so so sorry, sweetie. I’m so sorry’ she keeps saying, tears anew starts run out her eyes again, while her mind drifts back 5 days ago, where it all started.
‘So let me see if I get this right?’ Hickory begins while he helps his brother over a giant fallen log with a rope around him and Dickory, while said brother is cursing up and down and to the high heavens for gifting him with this damn body and how he wish he’d have moveing hair like the pops have. It would sure make this a lot faster! Poppy stops to look at the bounty hunter, the half open basked strapped on her and one on each bounty hunters backs moveing a little showing herbs, barks, flowers and berries, a small smile froming on her face when Hickory nearly let loose the rope thats currently the only thing thats keeping his brother from falling several feet down, again. The small yodleller looking at the other one with a glare. Dareing his little brother loose his grip again on the rope, or else theres going to be hell to pay.
‘Branch is missing or gone out of several herbs and a type of moss thats used for a variety of diffrent meds and skin tonics? And he ask you to get them for him while he fixses something down in the bunker thats gone badly out of whack?’ For the past 4 months, Hickory and Dickory has been residents of said bunker while they are here helping the pop trolls build up their villiage again. Its part of the deal they have with Delta on the amount of charity works they need to get done with the country trolls and for what they did Poppy and Branch. First they had to help fixing some the homes and buildings back in Lonesome Flats, before they were sent to what remaind of the Pop villiage to help fix things there as well. Though to be honest, untill more of the trees and plants recover some more, theres little they can fix. Many a troll are still living in the undergrund bunker the resident grump live and build up, till some of their home trees are ready to take them in again. Though said grump was getting a little antsy with all the other trolls hyper-go-lucky energy. And endless will to party hard and as loud as possible.
Both he and Dickory had been very supriesed and shocked on how one troll had build something this lagre by the age of 15, get it so well stocked and maintain all alone for well over a decade. It was not for nothing that the other pop trolls called him the most prepared troll of the Pop villiage. *Though to be honest, we should have figured that out with how he was so prepared for just about everything on the journey* Hickory thought while putting the rope in his basket, Dickory finally on safe ground. He’s very sure that if they meet another log like that again, his big bro is just gonna swallow his pride and ask the queen for a ride over instead. It was getting very tiring getting past these forsaken logs for the both of them.
‘Yep’ the queen say, the ‘p’ poping as she said it.’ The Ruby moss is the most improtent one along with the Silver Drop Rose. They are used for some very serious bruns tonics and blood loss meds that I think even the funk trolls have never seen. Branch said that even if we only get a few of each of them, it still be enough to treat several dozen patients, but it would really help him and the doctors to have a bundle or two of each instead. They only bloom for the brief period between these 2 weeks. The rainstrom season is coming soon and they are going to be washed away soon when the first storm hits. Oooh look some more Dede berries! Miss Flourens going to be so happy that we gotten some of them, they hard to find this time of the year. Now she wont have to worry so much about the flu season’ The berries looks nice where they are hanging from their bush, a rich maroon colour with what looks like a golden stripe going around the oval shaped fruit. Poppy takes out a few small clay jars to store them in from her basket. She notes that she’s running out of room to store things. She take out a book from the basket she’d taken with her in her hair, incase she found any other herbs she’s not sure about. One of the many useful gifts Branch have given her the past 2 years.
‘So why did you take us with you girly? You know how that boy of yours don’t like us very much’ Dickory asked, it was a bit of a understatment, Branch had been rageing mad at them when he found out the their lie. Had it not been for the fact that Poppy's other friends was holding him down, Dickory is very sure he and his bro would not be walking at all. Its a bit better now, but non of the yodeller brothers wants to overstep themself the frail peace they have right now. Though he still wounders what the less colour full troll meant with ‘ this is just like what happened almost 2 years ago!’. He did not like the sound of it, not at all.
‘Mostly to give you guys some breathing room really.’ Dickory gets back, the queen is still getting some of the last berries in the jar. Then give them to him for storage in his basket. ‘Also, I know for a fact that since your both bounty hunters you guys was the better choice to take on this little trip when it comes to protection. Which I know mister grumpy is not going argue against, beside I’d rather take you guy over the other one thats avaialble.’ * The less said about Creek the better off I am* Poppy thinks, not wanting to take that guru on this trip today, lately the purple troll was trying to get them alone very often and that scared her.
The three continue their journey, stoping every now and then for a breather or a brief lunch, when they come to a area that has the herbs they are looking for. Its not easy to get to them though. The roses blooms on a small cliff thats very close to a river that has some very sharp stones jutting out and the moss prefer to be on the ceilings in a cave that is home some nasty creeps and crawls that no sane troll would want crawling in their pants. However, when they took a break near a tree, they a get a glimps of a snow white petals that seems to shimer in the light behinde another tree and some bushes a little father ahead of them. Hickory and Dickory is not sure if it is safe to go there, but Poppy is insistent that they at least check it out.
They come onpond a small clearing with a pond near the middle of it, a single flower blooming from the north side of the pond. Its white as snow that shimer in the sun light, with what looks like golden, amethyst and royal coalbolt blue bands around the base of the pastals forming a lovely small pattern of rings together. Its shaped like a tulip, if a tulip had slightly longer pastals and curly torns that is. They can smell a faint hint of sweet yet lightly bitter smell coming for it.
‘Now what in blues hell is this? Poppy do you know what this flower is?’ Hickory ask as he looks at the plant. Its very nice to look at and would make a wounderfull gift to a loved one, but dose not go near it. Neither he nor Dickory knew if it was safe to go anywere near it. No doubt that something had to be wrong if only the flower was the only thing to bloom in that pond. He dose not get a anwser for a while, the queen busy with her herb book to see what they have stumblot onpond.
‘Thats very strange. Its not in the book.’ the pink troll say with a mumble. She looks at the two and ask ‘ are there any sticks or stones near bye that we can throw? We need to check that its not a pond lucker. Those things are rightout nasty to deal with and I rather like to keep my arms or legs intact.’ A shiver gos down her spine when she think what happened to the last party group that went out to gather stuff from the deepest part of the forest. From a 35 group to only 14 coming back, almost half of them missing limbs thanks only to dose things. Was it not for that 2 of them had realy good aim, more would have been lost.
‘I think a saw some over there by the river. Gimme a min’ Dickory say as he runs there to get some. When he comes back the three of them each choice a spot to hit, but noting happens. They to it a few more times, just to be sure but is just a normal pond. Relief settels in a bit, but they move slowly near the flower. Once they are near enough, Poppy takes a few minutes to look at it, than take out a pair of gloves, a sturdy looking glass jar and a small spade.
‘Don’t tell me your gonna take that flower with you?!’ Dickory almost shouts. ‘It can’t be safe if it is the only thing that living in this damn pond!’
‘I have to. This area is the closest to the villiage when it comes to get these types of herbs. The others can take weeks to go to and fro. Finding a plant that we know nothing about so close here, I have to take this to our herbalists to find out what it is. For all we know it might do more harm than good to this area’ Poppy anwser back, most of her focus on the plant, not knowing how true her words would become.
Once she got it in the jar, she looks at them and says ‘Its best we go now. We don’t need to be here any longer’ the hunters agree with both of them tur-
‘WAAAAAA’ a scream comes out of Branch traped yet again in another nightmare that he can’t wake up from, sending Poppy out of her thoughts and chair like a rocket crash and running to him. She hugs him while the trolling continue to scream his heart out, his fear clear as day, small fists hitting her chest every now and then. His not stoping and his sob aren’t getting better either.
*My poor poor Branch. Why do you have to suffer more of this?* rings in her head, well aware that her boyfriend haven’t had this kind of nightmare in a long time. It seems fate still wanted to give the troll some more grief. All she can do now is hold him tight, whisper sweet nothings and patt his back.
Slowly but surely Branch began to calm down, and slowly Poppy sings whatever her tried mind can come up with right now not careing if they fit with the song whats so ever.
Sweet baby mine don’t cry
The moons here to sing you a lullaby
And am here to sing with stars
Sweet baby mine don’t cry
We are all here to make you smile
She continues to sing as Branch slowly starts falling to a peacefull slumber, but Poppy know its not over yet. She lays him back to bed makeing sure not to wake him. Once she sure his going to sleep a bit more she drags herself to her own bed try to get some rest before Branch wakes with another scream.

You’re The Best Christmas Gift I Ever Got//A Reddie Christmas Fic
Tumblr media
A/N: Written for @star-gore  for the IT 2019 Secret Santa hosted by @itfandomprompts. They requested fluffy and funny Reddie, Stenbrough, or Benverly so I thought why not give them a little bit of all three? I worked really hard on this so I hope you enjoy it and have a very Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!
Prompt: Richie Tozier hates the mall at Christmas. He could think of about a million other ways he’d rather spend one of the few days of his winter break home from college than getting dragged around the mall for hours. But when Beverly needs help looking for Ben’s gift, Richie sees something that makes facing the crowds worth wild.
Word Count: 2,445
Genre: Fluff
Richie Tozier wasn’t sure what he’d done to deserve this, but he knew he better be on the nice list for it. Wandering around the overcrowded Derry mall, almost getting knocked down by frantic shoppers the week before Christmas, carrying an arm load of bags as he followed Beverly around. He groaned loudly as his fiery haired best friends continued to sort through shelves of books. She rolled her eyes but pointedly ignored him.
“Come on Bev! You know Ben is so obsessed with you that it doesn’t matter what you get him!” He leaned against the book shelf next to her. “You could literally give him the most generic gift of all time and he’d still love it and talk about it for months until we all get sick of him.”
“Richie,” She stopped and looked up at him. “This is me and Ben’s first Christmas together. I want it to be perfect.”
Richie sighed, feeling an uncomfortable wash of guilt. He knew how crazy about each other Beverly and Ben were and how much they had gone through to be together and he was happy for them. Especially after everything Beverly had gone through last year with that jerk Tom she’d been dating. Richie wasn’t sure he’d ever hated anyone as much as he hated Tom fucking Rogan. He wished he could say it was him and not Ben who knocked that smug smirk off his horse face. He’d tried though and got the black eye and chipped tooth to prove it. Beverly had cried and told him he was an idiot but it was worth it to him. Richie knew he was being kind of a jerk, he really was happy Ben and Bev had each other, he just wasn’t sure how much more shopping he could handle. Sensing this, Beverly sighed, stopping her searching to turn and face him.
“Okay, I shouldn’t be much longer. Why don’t you go harass Mike at the Santa booth and I’ll come meet you when I’m done?”
“Okay, fine  but you’re buying me a pretzel.” Richie agreed with a mock salute, turning on his heels and leaving a laughing Beverly behind him. A curly head of hair behind the register caught his eye though.
“Hey, Stan the man! Am I going to see you at Bill’s party tonight?”
Stan looked up from the puzzle that was currently keeping him occupied at the front desk. It was 1000 tiny pieces that from what Richie could see was supposed to eventually coming together to form a mural of robins. Right now it was only edge pieces and a few tell tail signs of red that Stan looked up from to give Richie a tight mouthed bitch face. “You mean my boyfriends party? The one he’s throwing me for Hanukkah. No of course not.”
Richie laughed and rolled his eyes. “Well who’s going to blow out the candles then?”
Stan’s face did not shift, “It’s an electric menorah, trashmouth.”
Richie shrugged. He reached over the counter and picked up a piece of the puzzle, putting it in place before heading out the door with a call over his shoulder of “See you tonight.”
Outside the quiet of the bookstore the Derry Town Mall was bustling with the week before Christmas holiday crowds. People pushed by each other, speeding from store to store as ‘Here Comes Santa Clause’ played through the overhead speakers. The enticing smell of food court burgers and pizza hung in the air, making Richie’s stomach rumble as he got closer to Santa’s Village right outside the food court.  The mall had gone all out this year with the village and the effort showed as soon as you walked up to it. But of course you could, Ben and Bill had built it after all. As soon as they had heard that the money raised through pictures with Santa would be going to help buy gifts for the local homeless shelter they had both been on board and between Ben’s building skills and Bill’s art skills, even Richie had to admit that it looked great.
The small house in the middle of the mall looked almost like a gingerbread house with its tan, glittery walls decorated with hooked candy canes painted along the walls and mountains of fluffy, fake snow covering the roof and lining the floor leading up to the house. The front of the house had a large open space though where you could see inside, but instead of an evil witch waiting inside it was Mike Hanlon, the actual nicest person in Derry. Mike sat on a large, red velvet lined chair in full red suit and white beard. He even had a pillow under his jacket to give him the bowl full of jelly look. In single file kids were ushered into the gingerbread house where they could meet Santa while Bill stood outside snapping pictures for their parents. Richie couldn’t understand why anyone would voluntarily used their painfully, criminally short winter break to go to the mall every day wearing a costume to deal with screaming, bratty kids all day but something that nice just fit Mike. He made a great Santa Clause too. He had a bright friendly smile under that white beard, and he’d spent most of November practicing his perfect “Ho-Ho-Ho!” Until Stan had begged and threatened to get him to shut up.
Richie laughed to himself, walking right up to the village and bypassing the line of kids going all the way back towards the bookstore, heading straight for Bill standing by the camera, snapping pictures. He tapped him on the shoulder, stealing a candy cane out of the bucket beside him when Bill turned his head. He opened the wrapper and popped it in his mouth with a smirk as Bill turned back to look at him. Bill’s eyes widened, flashing from the Santa house back to him.
“How’s it going Big Bill? I still can’t believe you volunteered for this.”
Bill’s eyes stayed wide, flickering back and forth between Richie and the gingerbread house then back to Richie. He swallowed thickly. “Richie?! Ne-,nei-neither can I.” He quickly turned back to the camera, snapping more pictures of the next kid sitting on Mike’s knee in the gingerbread house. “I th-,th-,thought that you ha-, hated the m-,m-,mall?”
“Well I do but Bev wanted help finding Ben’s gift so here I am. Never let it be said Richie Tozier isn’t a good friend.” He said, barley bothering to take the candy cane out of his mouth.
“W-,well w-w-,why don’t you g-,go hel-,help her?” He rushed, “we’re kind of bu-,busy h-,h-,here anyways.” Bill laughed uneasily, clearing his throat.
Richie’s brows furrowed thickly under his chunky black frames. He narrowed his eyes at Bill, “Are you trying to get rid of me Big Bill? Are you worried that Beverly is going to steal away your man? Because judging from the bird puzzle he has doing when I left I’m 100% positive she’s not interested.”
Bill cracked a smile at the thought of Stan putting together a bird puzzle at work but his face quickly shifted back into one of worry as he looked again back and forth between the house where kids were still filling through, telling Santa what they want for Christmas. “N-,No I just think it’s ru-,rude to leave Bev a-,a-,alone?”
Richie opened his mouth before his eye caught something that knocked him speechless.
“Okay, kid but seriously cover your mouth. It’s flu season and Santa can not afford to get sick. He’s a very important man and he cannot, I repeat, Santa cannot get sick!” A familiar voice fussed at the kids in line.
Richie’s jaw dropped, his candy cane falling to the floor but he ignored Bill’s small groan at the sticky candy hitting the floor. Eddie stepped out of the gingerbread house to face the line of waiting kids and make sure they were in a straight line. Richie blinked, almost expecting him to disappear when he opened his eyes back up but he was still there and very hard to miss in his costume. In red and white, candy cane stripped socks went up to his knees over his too tight red skinny jeans that Richie would take the time to focus on later. On top he wore a festive green jacket over a red shirt peaking out from underneath and a green, pointed hat with big, fake pointed ears on the sides.
“What the ho-ho-hell?” Richie stumbled, still staring wide eyed at his boyfriend. A huge, mischievous grin breaking out on his face. It was like Christmas had come early. He looked over at Bill with that same expression that made Bill sigh softly.
‘Sorry Eddie’ he apologized silently. “Ju-,just g-,go easy on him al-,alr-,alright Rich?” Bill shook his head, turning back to the camera and clicking away more pictures.
Richie nodded but said nothing. The ear-splitting grin still on his face as he brushed by Bill and almost knocked a few kids down getting to Eddie. “Eddie spaghetti! Does your mother know you’re out here wearing jeans like that?”
Eddie froze. His shoulders tensed and his eyes widened as he turned to face his boyfriend. His wide eyed, slacked jawed expression mirrored Richie’s at the sight of him. He glanced over at Bill for help but Bill refused to make eye contact, instead focusing himself on the camera in front of him. The shock quickly slipped off of Eddie’s face, replaced quickly by his best bitch face that Richie had seen a million times before. Richie just laughed and shook his head, the smile never leaving his face even when Eddie’s brows pinched together, and his eyes narrowed.
“Sir, if you’re not here to see Santa then you’ll have to step aside.” He dead paned.
“Well actually I’d love to see Santa but I’ve been pretty naughty this year.” Richie waggled his eyebrows over his glasses making Eddie groan.
“Hey, sounds like that are why I’m on the naughty list.” He joked. “But maybe you can put in a good word for me?”
“I doubt it.” Eddie crossed his arms self-consciously. “What are you even doing here anyway? I though you hated the mall?”
“The mall? No. The crowds, the traffic, the people fighting over gifts for people they don’t even like anyway? Yes.”
Eddie looked away, down at the line of kids, sending another running inside then wincing as one kid began having a coughing fit. Richie straightened up, the grin sliding off his face. He reached out and tugged at the point of Eddie’s ears attached to his hat.
“Why didn’t you tell me you got a job over break?”
Eddie swatted his hand away. “It just until Christmas then I’m burning these socks and the hat.”
Richie laughed, shoving his hands down in his coat pockets to resist from reaching out and tugging at the ears again. “Okay but I still don’t get why you wouldn’t tell me? I mean I’m hurt Eds! Truly, truly hurt!” Richie gritted out dramatically, clutching his heart and stumbling back, getting looks from some of the parents waiting with their kids nearby. But he felt a warm feeling of pride in his chest when he saw Eddie crack a smile.
“Shut up, I did this for you trashmouth.” Eddie shook his head, but his eyes widened and his smile dropped when he realized what he said. He straightened up and pushed the next kids forward into the house towards Mike.
Richie tilted his head to the side, “What do you mean? Are you going to wear the costume in bed? Please tell me you’re going to wear the socks at least? I can probably get Mike to loan me the Santa suit.”
Eddie pursed his lips, biting back a smile at Richie’s pervy humor that he loved to hate so much. With a soft sigh he crossed his arms again and looked up at Richie, curing their height difference not for the first time. “Look, we both know my mom cut me off after I came out and being a college kid isn’t exactly a paying gig.”
Richie nodded, he wouldn’t ever forget Eddie storming into his house in the middle of Thanksgiving, apologizing as he ranted about how he’d had enough of his mom and had finally told her off and while he was at it, told her he was gay and dating Richie. Maggie had hugged him tight and fixed him a slice of pumpkin pie, Wentworth had slapped him on the back, and Richie had never felt so proud. It was also why Eddie was spending Christmas break with the Tozier’s this year.
“And it’s our first Christmas together so I really wanted to be able to get you something.” Eddie admitted sheepishly, looking closely at Richie for his reaction.
Richie blinked, staring at Eddie for a moment, making him nervous. But Richie didn’t notice, too preoccupied with the feeling of his heart skipping and a warm blush making its way up his neck to his cheeks. “Aww, Eddie Spaghetti!” He laughed, grabbing the shorter man up into a hug and picking him up off the ground even as Eddie screeched to be put down. “You know you don’t have to get me anything right? Just spending Christmas with you is enough.”
Eddie smiled shyly, rubbing his hand over the back of his neck as he was placed back on his feet.
“Besides I know being in a mall during flu season must be killing you right now.” Richie laughed, freely tugging on the felt ears sewed to Eddie’s hat.
Eddie swatted his hand away with more enthusiasm this time. “Yeah, yeah, just try and act surprised when you see your gift okay?”
“Oh my God, you are wearing the costume home aren’t you?!”
Eddie rolled his eyes dramatically, trying to act annoyed and not at all like he was considering the idea when he grabbed the front of Richie’s sweatshirt and pulled his down into a kiss. Several of the kids standing around them groaned loudly and made exaggerated gagging noises but Richie and Eddie ignored them, instead Richie’s hands found their way to Eddie’s face, cupping his cheeks in his hands as he deepened the kiss. When they finally broke apart both out of air and the want not to get Eddie fired it was the sound of a camera snapping that caught their attention. Bill laughed to himself as he caught the kiss on camera but his expression dropped some at the angry elf now staring him down, hands on his hips.
“You’re a dead man Denbrough!”

~
When she woke up, it was later than usual. But Dean and Sam left a note for her for when she did wake up.
Hey Blue,
Uncle Sammy and I are helping Cas on a case that might involve Jack. If you could look up some stuff on the case that would be much appreciated. Sam left you his laptop in the library.
Call me if you find anything. Love you Princess.
- Dad
She could feel pressure in her head, her nose stuffy and runny, her eyes even itched a bit. They felt watery. And she had a pretty nasty cough. But she felt fine enough to sit and chill out at the computer all day to help her dad on the case.
She made herself a hot chocolate, warming up some milk, tossing in some marshmallows. She went into the library ready to go.
-
The case was a bust, no sign of Jack. Cas left to see if Heaven could help. Sam and Dean rented out a motel for the night, ready to leave for the bunker in the morning.
Her coughing fits got worse as the day progressed. Her headache got to the point it has made her cry. A constant fill in pressure, her eyes felt like they were gonna explode and if she couldn’t smell a thing. Her stomach decided to add to the torment and not agree with her, period.
Her stomach did a flip after said coughing fit. She leapt from her seat running for the nearest bathroom. Only to make it to the trashcan in the kitchen. Puking whatever contents in her stomach there was. Brushing it aside, she not only brought the trashcan with her, she headed back to the library, sat at Sam’s laptop and got back at it.
Sam had gone to bed early, Dean was looking at cases involving Jack. And then his phone rang. It was Sapphire.
“Hey Blue, found anything?” Dean asked.
“No, nothing.” She said. Her voice sounding rough, and clearly sick.
“You sound awful, you okay?” Dean asked.
“It’s just a cold, I’m fine, I’ll live.” She said.
“Don’t lie to me baby, you know what I said about that?” Dean said knowingly.
She sighed.
“My head feels like it’s gonna split in two, my nose is stuffed up, my throat hurts, and I threw up…twice.” She says.
“Alright.” Dean goes. powering down his laptop. Getting up to wake up Sam. “I’m waking up Sam and we’re leaving, now.” Dean says. “I’ll be home soon.” He adds.
As he nudges Sam’s shoulder harshly, waking him. “What Dean?” He goes, annoyed.
He points to his phone.
“No, Daddy, I’m fine. I made it this long being sick.” She says.
“We’ll hand whatever case to another capable hunter, right now, my daughter is sick. And I’m heading home to help her.” He says. “Now, power down Sam’s laptop, and get to bed.” He tells her.
“Okay daddy.” She says. Sounding tired and exhausted.
“You’ll be better in no time.” He says. Before exchanging I love you’s and hanging up.
“How bad?” Sam asked as he got dressed.
“I won’t know until I take her temp, she says she’s got a headache, stuffy nose and she puked a couple times.” Dean says.
“Sounds like the flu.” Sam goes.
“Maybe.” Dean agrees. “But, let’s get going.” Dean urges. Having already packed his stuff and is loading the impala.
She sat in the library, too tired to even move. She just closed out of the databases that were being used to find Jack, and opened up Google Chrome and began watching Markiplier on YouTube.
-
Her dad must have been speeding or was not that far from Lebanon, Dean came walking down the halls after dropping his bags off to his room and not seeing Sapphire in her room, he headed to the library. He saw her sitting at the table, on Sam’s laptop, watching a dude playing a video game. His antics making his daughter giggle.
“Hey baby girl.” He says upon entering.
“Hi daddy.” She said. She sounded weak and exhausted.
“I’ll have Sam get this laptop hooked up in your room, but let’s get you to bed.” He says.
He works her into his arms, and he carry’s her effortlessly to her room. She had dozed right off in his arms.
He lays her down gently, so as to not upset her stomach. He moves her heavy blankets to her feet, leaving her in the sheet blanket. He heads to the bathroom grabbing the thermometer. Coaxing her awake enough to get it in her mouth.
After a few minutes Dean pulled it out.
104.
Most fever reducers have doses made for kids 12 and over. Sapphire just turned 11. She’s still a bit young to be taking that kind of medicine. Sam decided to make a run to a nearby Pharmacy, grabbing a kid friendly fever reducer for kids 12 and under.
Dean gave her, her first dose. He grabs one of her chairs in her room, an oversized bean bag chair, and sat next to her bedside, keeping watch over her.
Sapphire slept soundly despite her symptoms. She woke up to her father, sleeping in the bean bag chair, holding her hand.
She still felt sick, but at least she didn’t feel like throwing up.
She wiped her eyes with her free hand. Waking her father.
“Hey Princess, how you feeling?” He asks. Gently brushing her hair from her eyes with his free hand.
“Egh.” She groans.
“Still crappy, huh?” he asks. she nods.
“Well then, we’re taking off today to take care of you.” He says, getting up.
“I’ll have Sam go get us some soup, crackers, meds, the works.” He says. “You just rest up in bed. ‘Kay?” he goes.
“Okay.” She says. How can she argue when she feels this sick?
And Dean goes to the kitchen to tell Sam exactly what he told her, and with that Sam is out buying canned soup, meds, and Dean is disinfecting the bunker.
“Dean, I have news.” Cas says, entering the kitchen.
“It’ll have to wait Cas.” Dean says.
“What are you doing?” Cas says, looking confused.
None of the Winchester brothers ever got sick, and Sapphire hardly ever got sick. But ever since she started up with school after summer break, it just popped up out of nowhere.
“Just disinfecting the bunker so no one catches whatever she’s got, miss Typhoid Mary in there.” Dean jokes, half kiddingly. Pointing to Sapphire’s room.
“It’s just the cold Dean, it’s not all that contagious.” Cas says knowingly. Causing Dean to look unamused at the angel.
“I’m not taking chances Cas, just go on your lead on Jack, I’ll have Sam help you when he can, ‘kay.” Dean says. “But I’m staying here with my girl, making sure she gets better.” Dean says.
Cas nods. “Very well Dean, I’ll call if anything changes.” He says.
“Sounds good Cas.” Dean says.
After cooking the soup, Dean enters her room, seeing her watching YouTube again.
“Why not just ask uncle Sammy to get you a console, and some games and play these yourself?” Dean asked, as he sat her dinner tray near her on her bed.
“These are PC games Dad, I’d need a gaming computer.” She says.
“We’ll get that too.” Dean says.
“Dad, it’s fine. I like watching it. it’s funny seeing him fail.” She says giggling at Mark failing at FNAF Help Wanted VR. “’Sides, I’d be cheating.” She says pointing at the video.
“Yeah, I guess.” Dean says. Just not getting it, how she finds that entertaining.
“Mind if I hang out with and watch?” he asks.
Might as well see what all the fuss is about though. He thought.
“Sure. If you don’t think Typhoid Mary here’s gonna get you sick.” She says, eyeing him. Making him chuckle.
“I was just joking around with Cas.” Dean says, setting in behind her. kissing the top of her head. “I love you baby girl.” He says.
“I love you too daddy.” She says as she dug in her bowl of chicken noodle soup.

An idea (if you’ve not already written this) Loki and Elliot both have the flu (or severe cold) and Loki just knows he’s gonna die from this Midgardian bug. Reader is trying to take care of both before she gets sick too.
i can’t—this whole concept cracks me the feck up, thANK YOU FOR THIS REQUEST
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
“I never realised that the ever-nearing release of death would taste so sweet.” His voice is muffled under a pillow as he struggles to pull yet another blanket up to his chin. “I expected a bitterness, a dying, stale bitterness, but not this…”
“Ah yes, this ‘elixir of approaching death’ is bubblegum flavoured.” You sigh and open a new box of tissues, sticking them in the corner of the bed near his head as you take back the little cup of cough medicine. “All we had was the kids version, I quadrupled the dosage for you. You actually think this stuff tastes good?”
“Taste is an abstract concept,” he moans, a hand emerging from the pile of blankets to grab a tissue before retreating back into hiding with a hugely exaggerated sniff.
This is getting ridiculous…although it is a tiny bit refreshing to see your god of a husband taken out by something as trivial and as human as a common cold. The poor guy had woken up with a scratchy throat and had nearly blown a hole through the roof—“there’s something in my throat!! My throat, my throat, there’s something in my throat that I didn’t put there—DARLING, IT HURTS—”
Sore throats are apparently unheard of on Asgard. As are stomachaches, cramps, fevers, stuffy noses, and the overall idea of snot.
“I should have appreciated taste while I still possessed the ability to do so. I don’t believe I’ll ever know senses again—not that it will matter.” There’s a wet honk as he blows his nose. “Becau’de I’ll be dead.”
“…you’re not dying.”
“Life…death…such a fickle thing,” he practically sobs, clamping the pillow down over his face. “I never thought it would end so soon. I-I had so much more I wanted to achieve, I had thousands of years left to live!”
“Again, not dying.”
“Shhh. At least I will die by your side, my love.” He peeks out from under the pillow and reaches weakly for your hand, his eyes red and puffy. It’s hard to take him seriously right now, being so over dramatic and with two wads of tissue stuffed up his nose, but you give him a sweet smile and take his hand.
Ew, he’s all cold and clammy.
“You’ve given me everything, my love,” he sniffs and holds your hand tightly, trying for a weak smile. “Our time together has changed who I am, and…and I owe you everything.”
“Mhm. Are you seeing a bright light yet?” You brush a few sweaty strands of hair from his forehead and he melts into your touch, closing his eyes.
“Yes…yes, I see it! Should I chase after it?” His eyes fly open and he becomes fixed on the ceiling fan, eyes going in circles as he follows the blades around and around and around—
“Stop watching the fan, you’ll make yourself throw up,” you sigh, leaning down to press a quick kiss to his sweaty forehead. “Bleh. Okay, I’m going to go check on Elliot. Oh, and that’s just the bedroom light, not death’s door.”
“Don’t leave me,” he pleads and reaches a hand out to you. “I always knew I would die alone, but-but I want your heavenly smile to be the last thing I see before I go.”
You roll your eyes and turn back around, dropping your head against the doorframe with another exasperated sigh. “Loki, for the last time, you’re not dying. You’re both going to be fine, it’s just gonna hurt for a couple days.”
“Denial, you’re already in denial, darling,” he wails, flopping back onto the pillows and spreading his arms wide in defeat. “My time has come and all I can wish for are your lips, just once more, I beg of you…”
“You are such an idiot.”
He lifts his head to look at you, his eyes pleading and pained. “Hush, please, just kiss me once more and send me off with the taste of you lingering on my fading lips…”
Shaking your head with a small smile, you walk back over to his bedside and he flops back onto the pillows, reaching for you with weak arms. “Please don’t make me kiss you.”
“You wouldn’t revoke the wish of a dying man, would you?”
There’s still tissue shoved up his nose.
You take the empty little cup of medicine and the box of tissues, holding it out to him. “Blow your nose like a proper human and maybe I‘ll reconsider.”
You’ve never seen such a sad, utterly defeated look in the eyes of a man before. Loki gives a violent cough and throws an arm over his eyes, staggering his breathing with a groan. “Tend to my son with care. Send him my eternal love, you immortal mortal.”
Somehow you had managed to evade this wave of flu season and Loki just can not comprehend how he has been so beaten by this “measly virus” while you, a proud every-morning orange juice drinker, had by some divine power been able to survive. Elliot got hit hard, and you think he’s the one who brought the sickness home, considering he spends most of his days in a classroom with a bunch of sticky, slimy, sometimes even drooling little kids.
Thank goodness your child is practically perfect in every way.
“MOMMYYYYY!” Elliot’s screaming for you from the bathroom down the hall. “I THREW’D UP!”
Practically…perfect…
“Don’t go into the light, babe,” you sigh and give Loki another kiss on the forehead, immediately gagging when you pull away and wiping off your mouth. “Ew, why did I do that again?”
“Ew?!” Loki repeats as you walk out the door, leaving him wailing under his pile of blankets. “You kiss me and say ‘ew’? I’m dying, and all you can say is ‘ew’—”
“Oh my god, I’ll kiss you later.”
Elliot is laying on the floor of the bathroom, having brought his pillow and blanket in to continue his nap by the toilet. “My everything hurts,” he whimpers when you kneel down beside him, running your hand through his hair.
“Don’t you want to get back in bed, sweetie?” The tile floor can’t possibly be comfortable, but he shakes his head and rolls onto his side.
“Too hot.” His fever has finally broken, so that’s not surprising.
“M’kay…why don’t you come lay in bed with dad?” You rub a comforting hand over his back. “Your own personal ice cube, that’ll make you feel better. And I think he could use the company.”
Elliot sniffs and slowly nods, sitting up and rubbing a tired hand over his eyes. After having him rinse out his mouth and drink some water, you pick him up and carry him back to your bedroom where Loki is surprisingly sitting up…and staring at the tissue in his hands with a look of pure horror.
“My brain,” he whispers, looking up at you with wide, watering eyes, “is leaking. Through my nose.”
“…no, it’s not.”
“Then what is this?!” He waves the dirty tissue at you as you lay Elliot on the bed, helping him prop his head up with an extra pillow.
“Oh my god, Loki, throw that away! That’s disgusting!”
Elliot curls up into a little ball and scoots over closer to his dad, who’s now fallen into some kind of paralysing shock, staring blankly at the foot of the bed in horror.
“All my knowledge,” he whispers, “everything I’ve ever known, dripping from my nose. This death is cruel, cruel, to keep me alive just to watch myself go mad.”
“Wait, we’re gonna die?” Elliot pipes up from under Loki’s arm—Loki hasn’t even seemed to notice until now that his son is there, as he is far too concerned with his “liquified brain.”
“No, no, no, neither of you are dying.” You fall onto the bed with a groan, rubbing your aching temples. “I swear if you say that one more time, Loki, I’m not even kissing you when you’re better.”
“Death is only natural, Elliot,” Loki murmurs, completely ignoring you, pulling the little boy into his arms and clutching him to his chest. “I always believed we would have more time together, but—”
“You’re nOT DYING, LOKI.”
“…see, your mother can’t quite accept the truth of the matter. Don’t be afraid, Elliot. I’m with you.”
Elliot’s gaping at you, stuck in his father’s hold and absolutely terrified. “I don’t wanna die! Mommy, I don’t wanna die!”
“Loki! Oh my god!” You hiss and clap a hand over Loki’s mouth, pulling your son into a hug. “You’re not going to die, I promise. You’re just a little bit sick! Both of you.” You shoot Loki a pointed glare. “Can you just trust me for a second? You’ll start feeling better in a few minutes when the medicine kicks in.”
“You’ve drugged us.”
“Yes, Loki, I drugged you. Now shut it before I shut you up myself.”
Loki pulls Elliot back against his chest and reaches for the tissues, shoving another wad up one nostril without breaking your gaze, and even in this state of “almost death,” you swear he smirks at your threat. And when he speaks, slowly turning a frosty blue as he runs a hand over Elliot’s sweaty back, his voice is all clogged up and nasally; “I’d cer’nly die a habby man.”
“That was SO attractive.”
He waves a blue hand at his face, heaving a great sigh that‘s just screaming for your sympathy and affection.
“That’s the best I can do. My brain is leaking, and death is inevitable.”

of places where you thought that love would be found by @margosfairyeye
I’m not much for soulmates, but that means that I’m often fond of stories that start off with soulmates and soulmate marks, then do something weird with it.  This is a great example of that subgenre; Quentin has a mark that’s unlike any other (a nice parallel to his canon problem of being a Nothingmancer for so much of his life); Eliot has Margo’s mark.  And yet, and yet, and yet.  Obviously this is one of those rewrite-the-stars stories; it’s not really full of surprises, but it’s lush and sensual and draws you in, laying out the longing and the edge of hopelessness and then the hope in a very visceral, intimate kind of way.  This one really could do almost anything and scrape by on sheer aesthetic quality, but I think what it does is exactly the right call.  It’s not terribly long, and I’d love to see sequels; I think it’s an interesting universe, and I’d like to see their in-universe nontraditional relationship unfold further.
* His name is Eliot, he says, and Quentin doesn’t think he knows a nicer name.  Quentin can’t stop looking at Eliot’s form, his long legs and the fabric wrapping closely against his chest; but more than that he can’t stop looking at his eyes.  Quentin remembers some cheesy quote about the eyes being the window to the soul. He thinks it might be less bullshit that he’d thought.
Quentin watches Eliot’s eyes look him up and down, and he feels excited, and confused, and slightly nauseous.  He remembers something someone told him, recently, about how the first time they saw their soulmate, it was like being hit simultaneously with the flu and a contact high.  Quentin doesn’t feel dissimilar to that description.
He tries to look at Eliot’s hands, his arms as they walk, but Eliot doesn’t give him a lot of time for study.  It’s presumptuous to ask someone what their soulmate mark says, most people consider it slightly personal information (with the exception of people like Julia who just give no fucks). But Quentin thinks that if Eliot has a picture, like his, he’ll be able to tell from a quick glance, and he can’t figure out a way to phrase asking that, anyway.
He can barely contain how excited he feels as they walk, and have snippets of conversation, and his wondering grows into full-on hope.  Eliot opens a door and Quentin finally catches enough of a glimpse. It’s on the wrong side of Eliot’s arm for him to see clearly, but Quentin can definitely see a distinct letter ‘M’.  So not him, then.  *
press your love into my palm by @propinquitous
There are a lot of Mosaic stories in the fandom, many of which share the basic plot of “they have sex in the Mosaic timeline.”  And a lot of them are really good!  I picked this one because it’s a stand-out example for me; it really just picks up from the moment of That Kiss and just keeps going, so what you’re going to get is what you expect.  But I just think it’s so beautifully done, the sweet edges of humor, Quentin’s shivery, hopeful boldness, Eliot being so blown away at how much he’s sold Quentin short in his mind.  I love a story that could seamlessly be canon, and this is exactly that story -- no one can tell me it didn’t happen just like this, because I read it, and I am a believer.  Just a blue-ribbon, five-star, standing-ovation They Have Feelingsy Sex story.
* Eliot pulled him in without hesitation. In some former life he'd been embarrassed of this kind of tenderness, save for maybe with Margo. It was always in him, though, and Quentin had been tugging at its thread for years. He'd almost completely unraveled in the time they'd spent working on the mosaic; every night that Quentin spent curled against him, desperate to quell his fear and frustration, frayed his edges. By the time Quentin kissed him, Eliot felt as threadbare as the clothes he'd arrived in.
Then, after. The second kiss was less chaste, more everything else. Eliot opened his mouth against Quentin's and ran his thumb over his cheek, felt him go slack under his touch. He tested, bit at Quentin's lower lip gently and tugged at the shorter hairs toward his nape. Eliot curled his fingers over Quentin's and he could feel the slight shudder as the arm supporting Quentin buckled and threatened to give out.
"Hey," Eliot said again when he finally pulled away. He didn't sit back and he didn't take his hand from Quentin's face. Instead he breathed in Quentin's heavy exhales and leaned his forehead against his, watching and waiting until Quentin opened his eyes.
"Hey," Quentin finally whispered.
"This conversation is riveting," Eliot said. Quentin smiled then and, Eliot thought, looked almost bashful.
"Well, I mean," he managed to say before he pushed forward again and didn't stop, his mouth firm against Eliot's until he had pushed him back and straddled his lap.
"Should I keep talking?" Quentin asked, running his hands up Eliot's chest. *
Shine Through My Memory by PanBoleyn, @eidetictelekinetic
This is kind of two separate stories in one, covering all of season 4, beginning with the alternate Brian and Nigel identities as they meet and fall in love, vaguely aware that there’s more to their connection than they can make sense of, and dropping into an alternate Monster plotline.  I don’t always like s4 stories, just because -- all the reasons and all -- but this is a really good Quentin, stubborn and fierce and heartbroken, juggling for all he’s worth to keep the layered memories of Brian/Nigel and the Mosaic timeline and the current clusterfuck separate and under control before he snaps under the weight of them.  It’s a little heavy, but there’s one chapter left to go, and I’m really looking forward to the release of the ending.  You really can’t get a more balanced and sturdy combination of dark canon!fic and romantic fix-it -- it’s truly the best of both worlds.
* “Colored chalk on my hands,” Brian murmurs, tasting the vanilla-caramel-white chocolate of his latte but remembering the taste of plums instead. He doesn’t even like plums, which makes the whole thing weirder, because in this not-memory he does. “I don’t understand any of this. Tell me it’s as weird for you, because I -”  A long-fingered hand closes over his own, and Brian looks up into gold-hazel eyes that he knows/doesn’t know and sees - all of it, reflected back. “I don’t get it either,” Nigel says, voice soft. “But I think maybe I’m better at just rolling with the punches than you are, hmm?” “I don’t. Roll with, with anything,” Brian says, and his voice isn’t steady anymore. “I don’t know how, my life is a predictable bore and I like the predictable part if not the bore part. But I think you have to tolerate being bored to keep things predictable so. So I tolerate it.” Tolerates a job he hates because teaching is better than a cubicle at a 9 to 5, and because the paintings and the newly-begun manuscripts that are Brian’s only love won’t pay the bills. “I’ve dated the same woman off and on six times because neither of us care enough to say no the next time one of us is lonely enough to offer, there’s been a man or two in the off points but no one. Nothing like -”
My dreams make no sense, and I feel more in them than I’ve felt in years. It’s not something he can say out loud, though. *
Veins Fit to Bursting by @amagpie
It’s a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fusion!  It’s a REALLY GOOD SMART WONDERFUL Buffy fusion!  Everyone kind of maps onto BtVS characters in a clever way, but it’s by no means a remake -- they remain very much themselves.  BtVS is obviously deep in the DNA of The Magicians, in terms of layering worldbuilding on top of an essential bone structure of coming-of-age, and this story is just an absolute bullseye in terms of understanding that.  Quentin’s general depression encompasses but isn’t limited to his feelings of being the useless sidekick, and Eliot’s transformation from mousy nerd to the undead version of the Champagne King is not only very William/Spike, but it builds this lovely foundation of connection between him and Quentin, neither of whom are living quite the life they once imagined they would.  There’s a very quarterlife-crisis vibe to the whole thing, which is perfectly in harmony with both shows, and a light touch to the voice that suits this slightly lost Quentin perfectly -- honestly, it may be my very favorite version of Quentin’s inner voice.  It’s early days yet in this WIP, but it’s fully earned my confidence in the first few chapters, and I am 100% down for the ride.
* “Okay, so I guess you could maybe say I’m a vampire hunter. But it’s not like it’s my job or anything,” Quentin pushes out in a rush.
A slow smile spreads across Eliot’s face: scary and genuine. There seems to be real interest in his eyes. Eliot settles himself onto a bench, patting the seat next to him. Quentin settles himself on the very far end of the bench to put at least a few feet between them. He’s down for a chat, not to get murdered.
“So it’s an extracurricular?” Eliot prompts. Quentin chuckles with how close to the truth it actually is, looking away. They do have an official college club to make research sessions easier -  the Ancient Sumerian Culture Club . They have a budget and everything - which Quentin submits as treasurer - although it more often gets used for pizza and wooden pegs than flyers.
“More like a duty. Or well, not exactly my duty.” Quentin furrows his brows. “Do you remember Julia?”
“I think so? Your friend, really tiny…?”
“Yeah, so, um, Julia is the slayer.”
Quentin looks back at Eliot to take in his reaction to the news. Eliot’s eyes widen, his hands tightening for a second on the bench beneath him. Something like pride coils up in Quentin.
“Huh,” Eliot finally says. *

Blade/Nick fluff, deal.
Summary: Acting on the set for CHoPs was a demanding job already. There can't be room for illness. Or, there shouldn't be. That doesn't mean they don't still have to deal with it.
Rating: G
-----
The weather was the same as it usually was in L.A. - smoggy to say the least. It was well-fitted with Nick’s mood that morning though, so points for pathetic fallacy. He’d been trying all day not to let it get to him, that general ache and chill that started to spread even out through his frame even in the sunlight, but he realised he was fighting a losing battle. And his partner was catching on.    “You’re sure you’re alright?” Blade leaned over to ask, worry lacing his tone. They were waiting in between scene cuts for another bit, but the smaller helicopter had started to look a little wobbly on his skids. And a bit pale.    “I’m..fine.” Nick replied, shaking his front in denial. “Just tired, didn’t sleep well.”    Blade knew full-well that was a complete lie. He was the one who never slept, unable to over the audible snoring beside him every night. How he still managed to be an early bird, no one knew. But then again, this morning he hadn’t been. He’d actually slept past his alarm, to the point that Blade had to physically shake him awake. Even then, he’d dragged from the moment he’d gotten up.    “You think I’d fall for that?” The older male accused, but not harshly, “C’mon, what’s going on?”    “It’s nothing,” Nick said firmly, “I’m just..not feeling it today.” He tried his best then to disguise that wave of vertigo, hoping the other wouldn’t notice, and that it would go away quickly.    It didn’t.    He’d actually had to move to brace himself against the other chopper when another wave hit, just as hard, causing the floor under him to feel like it was being moved.    “Nick?” Blade suddenly asked, worried.    He’d just leaned against his partner’s side, eyes shut tight so as not to watch the room go spinning. He hadn’t even realised when Blade had called for the medic, until he felt a pair of tines against his other side. He didn’t protest - he was used to them being all over him usually, and the last few times he had tried to fight ended with a wrench to the helm.    “That time of the season.” The medic sighed, tearing off a piece of paper from her clipboard. “Another flu victim I’m guessing. If someone can get him back to the hangars I’ll let the producer know. With good R&R and decent med-taking, he’ll be back on set in less than a week.”    They may as well have just stabbed him with a sword. A week?!?    “I’ll take care of it.” He heard Blade say, moving off from his partner’s side cautiously. The younger helicopter hadn’t fallen over, so it was a start.    He left for a minute to get something, leaving Nick to fend for himself. The main hangar they were in was spacious with high ceilings, but it was also crowded in corners with props and scenes put away for later use.    He hated that he wasn’t able to work. Stunts were out of the question. He’d be grounded and practically locked in his own hangar until the virus let up. Meds he was fine with, but having to laze around in bed all day was not his idea of coping with not being able to work on the set. He was sure Blade would agree. The workaholic never slowed down in the slightest.    Just as he was wondering where he’d gone off to, the chopper returned, and Nick scoffed at what he’d brought back with him.    “No.” He said flatly.    “You don’t have a choice.” He replied, setting down the front latch of the vehicle.    “I’m not using it.” He answered.    “Fine, you can hop all the way across the tarmac to the hangar, your choice.”    Nick bit his lip hard, face tight in indecision. He hated the wagon as much as he hated being sick. He hated everything it stood for, everything that made him feel useless for not having landing gear like the Agustawestland. But he also hated the idea of hopping all the way back, too. Normally he’d just fly back - it was his excuse for just about everything - and that would be the end of it, and he seriously considered just doing that instead, but in his state of vertigo he probably shouldn’t risk it. Especially considering the boss might have a conniption. Blade apparently knew how to read his thoughts, and without producing words, he shook his front in denial. Freaky. “Fffffine.” Nick said finally, glaring at the other helicopter. It was only because he felt like crap, that was it. He’d use it just this once and never again. The ‘wagon’ as the team had given name to it, was a flat cart with wheels that acted as the skidded-helicopter’s version of a wheelchair. It was supposed to be for all of Nick’s ground-transportation, but since he hated it so much he decided that he’d just have no ground transportation to begin with. He was going to toss the wagon off a cliff someday, but the directors kept it around “in case of emergencies”, or, he thought, in cases of indignity. But as another wave of vertigo with an extra side effect of good ol’ nausea decided to hit him, he decided it better not to squawk any more protest and just get it over with. The sooner it was dealt with, the sooner he could be back in the air. Blade had the front latch wrapped around his front landing gear, leaving Nick full ability to lay against him. He was cold anyways, and he’d already lost enough dignity as it was so why not. He didn’t care anymore. He’d realised the blue and white helicopter was probably trying his best not to panic. When it came to Nick’s own safety and well-being, he tended to lean on the side of worry-wart, but that was probably just because he’d watched Nick get into a lot of accidents since they’d been here. He wasn’t clumsy, exactly, but as the medics would describe, he was “possibly brain dead” as risk-taking as he was. It was worth it, he felt, to live and get hurt over not living and being bored. Like he was going to be for the next week.
Nick flopped onto the bed tiredly, and slightly agitated, while Blade went back to put up the wagon. ‘Good,’ he thought, ‘I don’t want to see it again.’ It wasn’t until he’d begun to relax on the cushions that he’d realised just how out of it he’d been. All day his body had just ached all the way through, in that weird not-exhausted kind of exhaustion that being ill usually went with. His helmache had gone from iffy to steadily worse, but he supposed he couldn’t complain about that one. He knew Blade’s migraines were a whole lot more hell than he’d ever know. There had been days so bad he couldn’t leave the bed. Those few occasions, he’d worried himself sick over making sure he rested, and making sure nothing interrupted that rest in the meantime. Come to think of it, that was probably how the older chopper felt about him now.    Blade had returned within a few minutes, finding his partner had already rediscovered the blanket stash in the closet and bundling himself up to the best of his ability. Like a burrito with eyes.    “Here.” He set down a couple pill bottles on the bedside table, “One of them is every four hours, the other is every twelve.”    “Great.” Nick said, sarcasm dripping from his tone.    The first day had gone by rather effortlessly. The medic probably knew he was going to be worse before he was better, so the early move was much appreciated by the young Hughes, especially on the morning of day two, in which he’d discovered that other wonderful flu symptom everyone hated: inability to process food.    “Crackers,” he said, “just a bag of flipping saltine crackers. That’s all I want.”    It was, for the time being, the only thing he could keep down. Even water messed with his system, so he took short, barely single-sip amounts at a time.    Bladed did try to coax him into something a little better than crackers, but in the end that was the only thing that stuck. Everything else was usually rejected within fifteen minutes. Fine, crackers.    The second day was also more prominent in coughing and hacking, so thank goodness for a med that helped with mucus relief. Nick had tried to make Blade keep a bit more distance, even if he was still taking care of him, but he’d stood his ground.    “You’ll end up sick, too.” He argued.    “So be it then, I’m not letting you try to take care of yourself like this.” He answered, “And besides, I take vitamin C.”    “Pfft, yeah, you religiously take them.”    “You’re the one sick in bed, I’m fine.”    “For now, sure.”    Fever was something that behaved pretty interestingly in Nick’s case as well. It wasn’t a permanent symptom like the others seemed to be when they showed up. His temperature fluctuated on a whim, like it couldn’t decide. One minute there was a low-grade fever, then he was fine, and then you blink and his engine was sitting at 209 degrees fahrenheit, cold and unstressed. Sure, let’s give the Agustawestland more reasons to have an engine failure.    Day three was probably the worst one of the week. It was long, tiring, and fever had finally made up it’s mind that it wanted to stay there. Nick slept through most of the day without request, a sure sign that he really wasn’t feeling well. Blade hated to, but he’d actually had to wake him now and again for another dose of this or that, and then he’d just dose back off again.    The blue and white helicopter watched over him like some overprotective mother with a newborn propling. He knew he’d be fine, but that didn’t stop him from worrying. This was the most out of it he’d ever seen his partner, since viruses didn’t act like physical injury did. In the latter, he was just the same. This crept it’s way into his very being, made him weaker and more vulnerable than before, and he couldn’t just brush it off like it was nothing. This had to run its course, as much as the both of them hated it.    The older male sighed, putting down his book to snuggle up against his partner’s side, who he’d been watching begin to shiver again. To anyone else they probably couldn’t see it, but he could. He knew how the other reacted to things, even without so much as conscious thought of it. It was getting late, the team outside packing up for the day. Even without both of their star actors, there was a lot to be done in the way of setup and additional scenes, and with the beginning of a new season there was more to be done than the usual. He supposed that was a good thing, giving Nick more time to fully recover, the way he needed to.    Days four and five were the beginning of improvement. Finally, he could eat some freaking food again! Well, so long as he was slow about it. The fever had also, finally, broken. One of the medics had come over for a quick assessment, and stated that he was indeed beginning to improve. But he wasn’t there yet, she warned, already knowing the excitement from the Hughes that he was almost able to go back to normal living.    “Give it a couple more days, until everything is cleared up,” she said, “And finish that bottle even after it does.”    The total time it took from first to last day was about eight, give or take. But finally, after complying to the medics and Blade’s frantic worrying, and his own tired, formerly ill-feeling self, he was cleared again to work - and to fly.    “Someone go set the wagon on fire!” He shouted, already taking off from the helipad.    “Keep dreaming, Lopez!” One of the set workers replied.
-----
Title inspired by the song “Shelter” by Porter Robinson and Madeon. It’s gorgeous, and the animated story is too.
And yes, even then, Blade worried, and he worked himself to death. He just strikes me as that kind of character really. And the migraines thing as well, I know some people with a history of those. I don’t get them personally, so I’m with Nick on this, but I know it sucks for them. (I have a fic on that actually on AO3, I’ll post it here eventually)

Aaaaaahhhhhhh! But I’m excited though! Again, thank you to @sugarglider9603 and @ask-spiderverse-virgil for their lovely AU! Without further ado please ENJOY!!!!
Master Post

Next Chapter
Swirls of colors and sounds filled their head like passing movie commentary you skip over. Small glimpses in and out of consciousness that made no sense by themselves but when put together you get some sort of visual on the puzzle you’re trying to put together.
“…food poising…?”
“…stress maybe…”
“…flu…should rest…”
“…24 hour bug…”
They all made sense when you thought about it but the reality of it was that they weren’t just “sick” they had been poisoned. Not on purpose, though who could say for sure. Who knows what kind of DNA splicing was done on that spider?
Wait, when did they get poisoned?
What spider?
The spider we let out the window?
No, it’s in our room!
We don’t like spiders! They’re icky!
They aren’t so bad.
A soft chuckle. Of course, we’d think that. You’d think that? I’d think that?
Wait, what?
---
Logan woke up with a start, heart pounding and lungs burning. He clutched onto something solid next to him so as to steady himself. He blinked rapidly, eyes adjusting to the dim light of the room in was in, his room? When did he get here? Logan carefully turned to take in his surroundings; he was in bed, dressed in pajamas, right hand having latched itself onto his head board. He glanced at the alarm clock near his desk it read 5am which would explain why everything was so dark.
Logan’s throat felt dry, like every time he swallowed it was like a cheese grater scraping against his vocal cords. He also fest extremely hungry despite the events that had happened previously. Logan carefully got up to go get some water and maybe an early breakfast only to be pulled back into bed.
“What the…?” Logan looked around to see what had happened and found that his had was still on his head board. His brow frowned as he tried to pull it off but it continued to stick as if it had been glued on. He pulled again, a bit harder, but only managed bend over a section of the metal bed frame. Logan’s eyes widen in shock and awe as he pushed back against the bended area and effortlessly straightened it. Now Logan wasn’t weak by any means necessary but he never considered himself athletic material either, let alone able to bend thick metal bed frames!
A soft tap on the door, “Logan, love, are you awake?”
“Uh, yes Ummi,” He replied hoarsely before clearing his throat “what did you need?”
“What are you doing up so early?” She questioned “The doctor said you should be resting?”
When did he go to the doctor?
“When did I go to the doctor?” Logan asked lamely, seriously all these blanks in his memories were going to drive him insane.
“We didn’t, we had called Dr. Smith next door,” Mrs. Quinn explained “unfortunately the Storms had called him as well. It seems Virgil had gotten sick too, very similar to how you did last night.”
Her voice sounded distant, like the memory of it brought her immense pain and that hurt Logan more then he thought it would. Also, Virgil had gotten sick as well, has he also been bitten? He asked, “Is he okay? What happened?”
“He’s fine but I’m not quite sure what was going on with you two,” She sighed “you seemed to be in a lot of pain, both mentally and physically. It was…very unpleasant to say the least.”
That was an understatement.
“Dr. Smith said it was probably a seasonal bug going around as well as stress,” There was a beat of silence “Logan, have you been doing alright in your studies?”
“Yes Ummi,” Logan reassured “everything is fine.”
“And you haven’t been harassed by other students like that boy from yesterday?” She asked anxiously.
“No Ummi, I haven’t,” Logan said seriously “I’m alright, I promise.”
More silence filled the room, unsureness thick in the air because honestly Logan had no idea if he was really fine or not. There was definitely something different about him that’s for sure and it had to do with that spider. He saw it on his desk, siting in the jar he placed it in earlier as if it hadn’t caused all this trouble.
“Can I come in?” Mrs. Quinn’s voice snapped Logan out of his train of thought and in a brilliant moment of word association he said “N-no, I’m…no dressed.”
It was cleat that this wasn’t something Mrs. Quinn expected, “Why are you undressed?”
“I’m getting ready for school,” He replied quickly “this is my normal routine, is it not?”
“Yes, but I would hope you would stay home today,” She said “especially after yesterday’s events.”
“I feel better now,” Logan assured, which was true, he actually felt great just really, really hungry and thirsty.
“Well, you don’t have to be in school until 8am so maybe you should rest a little bit more,” She suggested “and if you’re still feeling up to it then maybe you can go to school.”
“Of course, Ummi.” He nodded, even though no one was there to see it.
“But if I find out that you’re even slightly ill, you’re staying home,” Mrs. Quinn said firmly “understood?”
“Understood.” Logan agreed, best not to argue least she come in her and find Logan in his sticky situation.
“Good,” She sighed “go back to sleep love, I’ll be by to check on you soon. Babá and me have to leave to work a little early today so I want you to make sure you’re completely fine to go to school, okay?”
“Yes Ummi,” Logan sighed and with one last get well his mother departed down the hall. Finally. Logan’s muscles relaxed, not realizing how tense he had been, and he felt his hand slip from the metal bars it was attached to.
Logan blinked in confusion, standing up carefully and walking to a nearby wall. He decided to experiment a little, placing his hand on the wall and tensing the muscles in his fingers, just a bit. Like he predicted it stuck solidly onto the wall, he relaxed and his hand slipped free. He did this a few times more, first with one hand, then with two then with his feet before deciding to see what would happen if he pulled himself up. Logan was able to lift himself a few inches off the floor with nothing but his hands and feet holding him in place somehow.
“Holy shit.” He whispered to himself.
Logan looked to the little spider scuttling around in it’s jar as it effortlessly crawled up and down the sides. He wondered…he detached one hand and lifted it further up, same with the other hand, right foot, left foot, and soon enough he was hanging upside down from his ceiling.
“Something is definitely not right.” Logan breathed out anxiously, wondering how the hell the others were taking to this.
---
Something was definitely not right with Patton. First of all, he woke up tangled in his bed sheets which wasn’t unusual for the most part but it was much more difficult to get out of this morning since everything kept sticking to him. By the time he was able to detach himself from everything he was standing (hanging???) sideways on the besides his bed. Needless to say, he freaked out and spent half an hour trying to get unstuck only to drop back down on his bed and get tangled in his sheets again.
Defeated, Patton settled starfish style on his carpet floor, half the sheet clinging onto his leg as well as other thing such as papers and markers and socks sticking to other parts of his body. Patton really wanted to cry, he had no idea what was going on or what to do about it. But he knew crying wouldn’t do him any good so he took a few deep breaths to calm himself.
In for four…hold for seven…out for eight…
“I wonder why no one has come into my room yet?” Patton wondered aloud, especially with all the ruckus he was causing.
He lifted himself off the floor, not noticing the things he had stuck too start to slowly slip off, reaching over on his night stand for his phone. He clicked it on and found a few messages from his brother Georgie but aside from that he looked to the date and found that it was Wednesday. It explained a lot, Wednesdays were the busiest for his family with his parents’ bakery always filling up, Alex is having the morning shift at his part time job before heading to university, and Georgie opening up at the dinner he worked at. He quickly opened up his text messages.
Georgeous: ma said shed get off work early if ur still sick
Georgeous: theres soup & crackers at your desk if ur hungry
Georgeous: also water
Georgeous: ma also said u dont have to go to school today if u dont wanna
Georgeous: doc said u should take it easy
Ever the doting older brother Georgie was, always looking out for Alex and Patton even if they could get on his nerves sometimes. He should bake him a cake as a “thank you for dealing with all my oopsies”. Patton sent him a reply along with a few questions.
Baby Shark: thanks but i feel better now
Baby Shark: when did i go to the doctor?
Georgeous: dr. ortega from down the street was alredy coming by to check on romen
Georgeous: turns out he was sick as well
Georgeous: ma asked her to come over when she was done checking him out
Baby Shark: is Ro ok?
Georgeous: yeah doc said it was probably the flu going around an it just got to u 2 realy hard
Georgeous: why didnt u tell us u were feeling sick?
Patton thought for a moment, how could he explain that he hadn’t been feeling sick at all up until yesterday afternoon after…after he got that bug bite. Then that weird dream he had just before he woke up stuck to the wall and tangled in his sheets. How was he supposed to explain that things kept sticking to him and that the world seemed much more sharp now?
Baby Shark: i didnt notice it much
Baby Shark: and when i did i just thought it would pass with a good nights sleep
Baby Shark: i didnt want to bother anyone if it was nothing
Patton didn’t like lying to people but he just had no idea what was going on and he doubt anyone else did either. This would just cause them to freak out and then what? More doctors? Would the government get involve? Were they gunna make him a science experiment now that he’s a freak?
Georgeous: still next time tell us even if its just a stomach ache
Baby Shark: ok
Baby Shark: i g2g and get ready for school
Georgeous: r u sure?
Baby Shark: yeah i feel a lot better now promise <3
Georgeous: ok but if u feel sick just call me an i’ll pick u up ok?
Baby Shark: ok bye love u <3
Georgeous: love u too
Patton sighed, flopping back on the floor. He felt sick again but not like before, this was a different kind of sick. A guilty pit in his stomach kind of sick that probably won’t go away any time soon. Oh well, he couldn’t change anything now, might as well move on with his day. First things first, he had some thank you cookies to make.
He lifted his phone to check the time, 7am, plenty of time to do a quick batch of peanut butter cookies and scones. He should hurry so he could go check on Roman afterwards, he did look a little down when they were walking home yesterday.
“I wonder…” Patton said aloud again as he stood up to get dress. He placed his phone back down on his night stand and noticed his glasses sitting beside his lamp. Patton blinked as he felt his face and found he indeed was not wearing his glasses and yet the world looked crystal clear as if he was.
“Oh geez…”

Virgil was very thankful that it was Wednesday, everyone always goes to work early on Wednesday since it was the middle of the week and for some reason Manhattan decided to be a world of chaos. He was also thankful that he grandmother was a heavy sleeper because he had no idea how he was going to explain this!
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!” Virgil cursed as he desperately tried to unstick his feet and left hand from the ceiling. He had no idea how this happened or why it was happening he just knew that he wanted to get unstuck now!
Knock! Knock!
“Piglet, are you awake?” His grandmother called from behind the door.
“Uh, yeah,” Virgil squeaked “b-but, um, don’t come in I-I don’t have a shirt on!”
It was true, during his earlier struggle to get unstuck from his bed, which he at first thought was sleep paralysis, his hands got stuck to his shirt and tore it open when he was trying to unstick them.
“Well, I was just wondering if you wanted breakfast,” She said “I could make you a warm broth so as not to upset your stomach.”
“N-no thanks Mama,” Virgil said quickly, finally able to get his hand free “I’ll just have something at Logan’s house before I go to school.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” His grandmother questioned sternly “You were very sick yesterday and the doctor said to take it easy.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m sure,” He fibbed as he wondered when he had gone to the doctor.
“If you’re sure,” She said skeptically “just make sure you two don’t eat anything too heavy. I heard Logan got sick last night as well, the doctor said it was a passing seasonal bug.”
“Okay, sure thing,” Virgil gulped “I’m gunna get ready now, don’t worry about me.”
“We will always worry about you, Piglet,” His grandmother said gently “it’s what families do.”
And with that she was gone and Virgil was beyond relieved. Then he fell off the ceiling. He was thankful for the dirty clothes pile in the middle of his room that softened his fall but he also cursed it because that means more stuff got stuck to him.
He groaned, “Come on, come on! Unstick, unstick!”
He hopped around the room like a lunatic and was only able to shake off a few articles of clothes before he tripped. The fall wasn’t as soft this time but at least the floor was carpeted at least so he didn’t knock his head that badly. He had landed near his dresser drawer where JD’s tank rested on, the tarantula in question was practically pressed up against the glass and hissing worriedly at his owner’s misfortune.
“Hey buddy,” Virgil groaned as he pulled himself up to be eye level with the tank and all who inhabit it “I’m okay, don’t worry. Though I’ll be honest, I have no idea what’s going on.”
“Hurt! Master hurt!” JD chittered as he paced anxiously in his tank.
“I’m good really, you hungry?” Virgil asked before he paused to process what just happened. Did…did his tarantula just talk to him? No, no, it couldn’t be, he just hit his head too hard. Right?
“Food!” JD cheered excitingly as he scurried around his food bowl patiently waiting for something to drop.
Virgil’s eyes widen in shock, completely frozen in place as he stared at his pet tarantula who was excitingly chanting “Food, food, food!”. He noticed that there were little waves of colors radiated off JD like a sort of technicolor halo. It was all getting to be a bit too much.
JD scuttled back to the front of the tank, a confused look in his eyes, “No food?”
Virgil yelped, accidently launching himself backwards towards his desk where he got stuck again. God damn it! Papers flew around were everywhere and Virgil couldn’t see, he stubbled around not knowing where he was going as he tried to desperately to get things to stop sticking to him.
“Stop sticking god damn it!” He growled as he finally got the last piece of paper off of his face. His relief was short lived because to his horror he was not in his bedroom anymore but on the standing perpendicular to the side of his building. “Keep sticking! Keep sticking!”
He was about a foot away from the fire escape near Logan’s window and Virgil contemplated weather or not he had enough courage to jump over or if his stupid sticky body would even allow that to happen. Still, he tried, carefully shifting one foot in front of the other until he had inched his way over the fire escape. Thankfully, it was only then that his stickiness decided to abandon him as he fell onto hard metal. Virgil groaned, it surprisingly didn’t hurt as bad as he thought it would but it still hurt pretty fucking bad.
He heard the window above him open up and his head tingled when he saw Logan poke his head out, looking around before finally spotting him below. The waves of color were back but this time they were brighter and loud like some sort of signal. Logan was a mesh of blue and cool grey and by the look he was giving him Virgil was just as colorful.
Logan seemed to think deeply for a moment, his mouth a straight line of concentration, “I can assume my theory was correct.”
“What theory?” Virgil groaned as he slowly sat up, rubbing his sore head. He’d be lucky if he didn’t get a concussion after all of this.
Ignoring his question, Logan grabbed Virgil’s arm before he could warn him and pulled, “Come inside.”
“Wait!” Virgil was pulled into the room quite effortlessly as if he weighed nothing to Logan. Which wasn’t all that hard to believe, Virgil had always been a thin guy plus he was a dancer so that wasn’t helping with anything. But not to say Logan was weak but seeing as the most physical activity this guy does is walk to and from school, he should have had at least a little trouble getting Virgil inside.
“You’re not gunna believe this but JD talked to me and I fell from side of the building because I got stuck!” Virgil blurted out in one breath.
“Yes, I know,” Logan said coolly “I need you to relax.”
“How the hell do you want me to relax?!” Virgil screeched “I just fell from the wall and I’m sticking to everything!” To emphasize his point, he shook his hand which was now stuck on too Logan’s arm.
“I know,” Logan repeated “it’s been happening to me too but you need to calm down if you want to get unstuck.”
“How do you know?” Virgil cried, thoroughly done with this whole day and it hadn’t even started.
“Because I’ve been testing myself since 5am ever since I woke up stuck to the head board of my bed frame then proceeded to fold it and unfold it like it was paper!” Logan shot back, seemingly frustrated as well “Now breath!”
Virgil finally shut up and listened, breathing in for four…hold for seven…out for eight…then again, a few more times until he was able to unstick himself from Logan’s arm. He leaned back against Logan’s desk, wrapping his arms around himself as he anxiously looked towards Logan for answers. “What’s going on?”
Logan looked tired, his hair was messy and he had bags under his eyes but he looked determined, “I have few theories, mainly surrounding the spider that bit us.”
“Spider?” Virgil said, it couldn’t possibly be the same one from yesterday could it?
“Yes,” Logan said, grabbing a jar from behind Virgil and thrusting it in his face. Inside was the same spider from yesterday scurrying around the now web filled jar. “It’s from the same spiders we saw at the lab at Oscorp. Most likely the one that escaped.”
Virgil tilted his head curiously, “I thought the tour guide said it was back in the lab?”
“Obviously not,” Logan said deadpan.
“Trapped! Free!” The spider hissed causing Vigil to jerk back, kicking his leg up at the jar as Logan fumbled to grab it again.
“It fucking talked!” Virgil shrieked.
“Yeah, no shit!” Logan snapped, placing the jar near one of the shelves furthest from the panicking teen “I thought we established that with your spider!”
“Why is it talking?” Virgil snapped back.
“It’s not,” Logan sighed, straightening himself out as he reached to adjust his glasses only to realize he wasn’t wearing them “our sense have been enhanced to see and hear things better which in turn means we can hear certain frequencies better. It has been theorized that insects have their own language but the frequency at which it’s at it too high for normal human ears to pick up. What we’re hearing is a weak and choppy frequency so we’re only able to make out a few words.”
“Ah-huh,” Virgil nodded, still slightly freaking out “so what does this have to do with, mmh, everything else!”
“Don’t you see?” Logan said “We’ve been enhanced with artificial spider DNA! The venom injected into us was supposed to kill us but it instead latched on to our genetic coding and mutated us!”
“Wait, wait, wait,” Virgil rubbed his face anxiously “so, what your saying is we have spider-based superpowers like…like Rainbow Weaver?”
“Basically,” Logan shrugged “though all I’ve been able to find now is our abnormal adhesiveness, above average strength, slight sensitivity to radio waves, slightly larger range in frequency, faster reflexes, acute awareness and, as you’ve noticed, perfect eye vision.” He gestures towards his glassless face as evidence.
Virgil ran a trembling hand over the left side of his head, “This is crazy, this is impossible, this…this…” He tugged at his hair and realized “my hand is stuck.”
“Relax,” Logan soothed “you were able to get it unstuck before, you can do it again.”
“And if I can’t?” Virgil squeaked, panic beginning to rise once more.
Logan bit his lip nervously, “We’ll think of something.”
---
There was a note on Roman’s dresser from his mother when he woke, he tried to read it but he was stuck to his sheets and as well as a few other things when he came tumbling out of bed. Notebooks, scrap papers filled with important theater notes, dirty clothes, make up, and any other thing his body made contact with. At first, he thought it was a prank done by the twins but it seemed a bit excessive and a little to advanced. Plus, how would they even do that? Getting Roman to stick to everything without using some sort of glue?
Roman was able to rip most of the things off of him and finally walk over to the dresser. He didn’t risk touching it though, much too scared he’ll get stuck again, so he merely peered down at the note filled with his mother’s careful handwriting.
Roman squinted at the not confused, when had he gone to the doctor? When did Patton get sick? What the hell was going on? Billions of questions swirled in his head causing Roman a painful headache or maybe it was because he was super hungry? Either way he needed to get out of his room. Roman marched to the door and yanked it open but found that he was now stuck to the door knob.
“Pinche manos pegajosas!” Roman cursed as he tried to yank he’s hand off the door knob only to pull it off with him. He sucked a painful breath through his teeth though it wasn’t because he was hurt, more it had to do with the landlord finding out and charging them for the damage later. Roman fixed it the best he could for now before carefully side stepping around the door into the hall. He breathed a sigh of relief as he leaned back against a wall contemplating what was going on with him and how he was going to pay back the broken door knob.
How had he even done that? Sure, Roman liked to brag that he was athletic and junk, which he was, but even he wasn’t that strong to tear a door knob off it’s wooden frame. Also, he was really jittery, like there was a constant buzz at the back of his head that made him super aware of everything around him. Was this how his mother felt with four kids running around the house?
His stomach rumbled, train of thought gone and replaced with the want of food. So, Roman moved to stand from the wall, well, he tried, he was stuck again. A loud groan left his lips as he made the mistake to use his hands to push himself off. No surprise they stuck to so he used his feet…you see where this is going? Long story short he did end up making it to the kitchen but for some reason he ended up stuck to the ceiling, dangling by only his left foot. Which is how Patton found him.
“Roman?” Patton entered into the apartment dressed and ready for school with two bags of cookies neatly wrapped in clear plastic. There were swirls of baby pinks and blues radiating around him like a sort of weird halo of light. It buzzed and sang with in a weird yet familiar tune that was just…all Patton. Patton must have been able to see it too because he had this sort of curious looked as he continued to stare at Roman for a long time. Then Roman remembered the situation he was in, “Help!”
“Oh dear.” Patton sighed, snapping out of his trance and placing his cookies on the coffee table near the living room before heading over to inspect the situation. He grabbed onto his friends dangling arms and looked him straight in the eyes, “Roman, I need you to calm down.”
“How do you expect me to be calm right now?” Roman shrieked “I’m hanging upside down by my foot! From the ceiling! What even is going on?!”
“I’m not sure,” Patton replied calmly “but all I know is as soon as I started to calm down things started unsticking. So, I assume it’s going to be the same for you.”
“W-what? You too?” Roman asked a bit less panicked, it was good to know he wasn’t alone in this strange situation.
“Yes,” Patton soothed “then when I started stress baking everything stopped sticking. I’m guessing if you’re too anxious or tense it just gets out of control. So, I need you to try and calm yourself, deep breaths, you can sing a little bit if it helps.”
Roman took a few deep breath, trying to qualm his shaking nerves before starting to hum a little tune, “Isn't it lovely, all alone?/ Heart made of glass, my mind of stone/ Tear me to pieces, skin and bone/ Hello, welcome home.”
Finally, he unstuck and flopped right into Patton’s arms who, surprisingly, was able to carry him without any trouble. After being carefully set back on his feet once more Roman began to freak out again, “What the fuck is happening?!”
“I’m not sure,” Patton said, anxiously rubbing his hands “I just woke up sticking to everything and the world seems like it’s moving in slow motion and I can see without my glasses and none of my cute clothes fit me anymore!” He pouted, gesturing down towards his favorite jeans that had flowers embroidered at the cuffs and up the sides which used to fit Patton perfectly but now land few inches above his ankles.
Roman gazed sympathetically at his friend, had been ready to assure him that he still looked very cute only to be cut off by his rumbling stomach. “Dear God I’m starving.”
“I know what you mean,” Patton replied as his own stomach rumbled “I ate the soup my mom made me plus all the left overs plus the first batch of cookies I made and I’m still hungry!”
“I’ll be willing to share my soup and left over with you if you make me cookies later,” Roman bargained “I’d ask for those you brought over but I know those are special.”
Paton flushed red, quickly changing the conversation, “D-deal, we’ll eat then head off to school and…maybe find someone who can help us afterwards.”
“Like who?” Roman questioned “What other person has been going through the same shit we’ve been going through this morning?”
---
Virgil’s stomach rumbled as he and Logan made their way down the school halls, “For the love of god! We practically cleaned out all the left overs and snacks from both of our apartments and I’m still starving!”
“I’m guessing high metabolism should be added to the list,” Logan said, stopping by a nearby vending machine “Or maybe it’s the fact that our bodies are still going through puberty and the spider DNA has enhanced that as well, or maybe it’s a mixture of both.”
“Yeah, I’ll bet,” Virgil grumbled, carefully pulling down the sides of his beanie “by the way, you couldn’t of thought of anything better to get me unstuck then mutilating my hair?”
Logan rolled his eyes, bending down to retrieve the various treats he had purchased “We tried to get you to calm down for thirty minutes but you still remained tense. What were you gunna do? Stay stuck and let someone find out?”
“You could have at least done a better job!” Virgil snarked, taking the chips and candy bars handed to him.
“I’m not hairdresser,” Logan stated plainly, stuffing half a chocolate bar in his mouth “I did the best I could.”
“Well if this is your best, I don’t want to see your worst,” Virgil grumbled, stuffing a hand full of chips in his mouth “what are we even gunna do after this? Can we do anything? Who can we even tell?”
“Calm,” Logan soothed, a careful hand placed on his friend shoulder “we’ll figure something out. Right now we need to focus on finding Patton and Roman, they must be having just as difficult a time adjusting to their new found abilities.”
“Are you sure they were bitten?” Virgil asked skeptically “What are the odds of the same spider biting all four of us?”
“Patton’s bug bite from yesterday looked similar to ours and I can only assume since Roman was in close proximity to us, he was bitten as well,” Logan explain, readjusting his glasses which now had no lenses “my theory is that he got bitten during detention yesterday, then Patton outside, then you when you arrived home and found the spider, and finally me after I finished talking to my parents. Tell me, when did you start feeling the effects of the venom after you were bitten?”
Virgil thought a moment, “I took a nap and scrolled through Tumblr, my mom called me out for dinner and I was talking to my grandma and then…nothing. It’s all fuzzy after that.”
“Interesting,” Logan hummed “I remember being called out too after I caught the spider, then I sat down and…it’s all a blur from there. From what my parents told me I assume I was somewhat coherent enough to eat and talk, although it was somewhat slurred, then I began to malfunction.”
Virgil snorted, “You’re talking as if you were a computer.”
“It seems the spider is learning with each victim and increasing it’s dosage,” Logan continued, ignoring Virgil’s comment “which would explain why the effects happened faster for me then for you. And I can only assume the same can be said with Roman and Patton seeing as when they were bitten earlier on. But like I said, it is only a theory.”
“A game theory!” Virgil quoted with a laugh causing Logan to quirk and eyebrow “This isn’t a game Virgil.”
“Yeah, I know but I cope with sarcasm and memes,” Virgil grumbled, stuffing more chips in his mouth “sue me…”
Logan sighed, unwrapping another candy bar, “This is going to be a long day.”
---
Down the hall on the opposite side of the school Patton and Roman were having their own conflict. Still hungry after downing all the left overs and munchies they bought at the corner store before coming to school they were currently emptying out the vending machine. They were discussing their current predicament while spitting their purchase.
“How we were able to get here in time I will never know,” Roman grumbled, struggling to stuff his food in his backpack “are you still sticking to thing?”
“Not as much as this morning,” Patton said, finally able to zip his bag before sling it over his shoulder “you?”
“A little, I guess, I don’t know,” Roman sighed, opening a bag of Skittles “it’s just I feel like everybody is staring at us.”
“But there barely anybody in the halls,” Patton said “but I know what you mean. It’s like you can feel them from the inside of the class.”
“Yes!” Roman exclaimed softly “It’s fucking weird!”
The first period warning bell rings and the two friends make the journey down the hall to their class as did the rest of the remaining students in the hall. This whole situation was like some weird fever dream they couldn’t wake from. Their skin buzzed, their ears rang, their senses were just all over the place, it was all very overwhelming. Roman usually reveled in being under the spotlight but at the moment it seemed like there were too many eyes watching him and all he really wanted was to curl up into the nearest dark corner and sleep. He hadn’t had the time or ability to get dressed properly or do his make up and he was still in shock from everything that happened this morning. Patton, the usually cheery social butterfly, didn’t feel so cheery or social at all today. None of his clothes fit him right, everything was either too slow or too fast, and he had to take out the lenses of his glasses which really upset him because they were cute round rose gold glasses with rose tinted lenses and now, they’re ruined!
So busy moping were the two friends that if it weren’t for the tingly sensation at the back of their head, they would have missed Virgil and Logan passing them by. Granted they were distracted by their own conversation as well and were basically snapped into attention by the weird and colorful tingly sensation pulling them towards Patton and Roman. They were all a melting pot of technicolor waves, blending and buzzing with each other in some weird kind of dance. Virgil was a foggy storm of blacks and purples and white lighting which in theory should be dark and hard to see but was for some reason bright and beautiful. Roman was a swirl of bright white with streaks of red and gold dramatically singing a beautiful melody. Logan was a cool blend of dark blues and greys, a normally dull combination but it structured itself with such formality and care it was an exquisite display of stars. Patton was a pop of cotton candy pinks and soft blues bursting with life and richness, they bloomed like flowers in the spring time.
“You’re like me!” They said in unison.
It was then that they noticed they were still in the hall and even though there weren’t that many people around there were still people. Logan, with his quick thinking, ushered them all into the nearby boy’s bathroom and corralled them into the large stall near the back. Everyone was freaking out.
“You’re all colorful!” Patton said in awe.
“What’s going on?” Roman hissed.
“Why the fuck would I know?!” Virgil snapped.
“Shut up!” Logan demanded and the room was silent “I have a few theories, first off-”
The sound of a toilet flushing caught their attention, finally realizing they weren’t as alone as they thought. They tensely waited for whoever was out there to finish washing up and exit. The sound of boots echoed throughout the bathroom as the faucet opened and close multiple times. The hand drier blazed to life and for a moment the four teens thought they’d finally be safe until a familiar slimy voice said: “I know you nerds are in here!”
“God fucking damn it!” Virgil mouthed furiously, Dolion messing with them again is the last thing they need right now.
“Don’t think I couldn’t here your whispering,” Dolion hissed “what, are you here to fuck me over again? I already have another detention because of you assholes!”
The bang of a nearby stall door was heard then another and another each getting closer and closer towards them. Dolion growled, “Come out, come out, where every you are! Fucking cowards!”
The group didn’t know what they were so nervous for, what would Dolion do? Take them all on? And even if he did, they would just tell Mr. Larry and he would get in trouble again. Maybe it was the fact that they were all kind of lowkey scarred of Dolion, dude was a big guy, or maybe, just maybe, it was because they had weird mutant spider powers that they didn’t know what to do with and wouldn’t know the outcome of what would happen if Dolion tried to fight them now. But just as Dolion was nearing the last stall door the tingly sensation in the back of their heads told them to jump and so they did without hesitation.
The last stall door was kicked open, Dolion entered with a sneer and saw that it was completely empty. He did a double take, looking around confused, so certain he had heard people come in, that he had heard them come in. Shaking his head in irritation Dolion left the stall and marched out of the bathroom with a huff.
Meanwhile, clustered up on the ceiling, right above where Dolion had stood, were Patton, Roman, Virgil, and Logan who all let out a sigh of relief. “That was close.”
Then there was a loud creek and Virgil gulped, “Oh no.”
They all came crashing down along with the flimsy white ceiling tile that held them up their in the first place. They landed on the filthy bathroom floor with a thwap while the ceiling tile crumbled in half.
Roman groaned, “This is the fucking worst.”
“I’m inclined to agree,” Logan grumbled as he lifted himself from the floor “we shall further discuss the matter after school.”
“What do you mean after school?” Roman balked “I want to know what’s going on now!”
“Hey, genius, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I don’t think a public restroom in a high school is the best place to discuss our…condition.” Virgil snapped.
“They’re right Roman,” Patton butted in before his friend could reply “who knows what will happen if someone were to find out. Especially, Dolion.”
“Ugh, fine,” Roman sighed, he couldn’t say no to Patton’s puppy dog eyes “where shall we meet then?”
“On the roof.” Logan said.
“Why the roof?” Virgil and Roman asked simultaneously.
“It’ll be empty and secluded once clubs are over everyone has gone home,” Logan replied coolly “which I’m assuming all of you have, right? A club to attend, I mean.”
“Yes, I have culinary club,” Patton said “we’re working on the bake sale for Friday night’s game.”
“Shit, yeah, I have dance,” Virgil said then groaned “Ms. Green is gunna make me work double time for missing yesterday.”
“You dance?” Roman asked surprised.
“Uh…yeah,” Virgil rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment before snapping to the defensive “Is there a problem with that?”
Roman raised his hands up in surrender, “You think I, the theater geek, would be one to judge?”
“Well, you have with a lot of other things so excuse us if we’re a little surprised.” Logan chimed in.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Roman snapped.
“Exactly what I just said,” Logan said nonchalantly “anyways, I myself have debate club so we all should finish up at around the same time.”
“Hey, don’t just brush me off!” Roman said, frustration evident on his face.
“What use is there to continue on that topic?” Logan asked “It’s not important to our current situation.”
Ignoring Logan’s statement Roman continued his rant, “Are you saying that I judge people based on how they look and what they like to do?”
“Yes,” Logan said bluntly “now can we please move on?”
“It’s not true!” Roman cried.
“Speaking from past experiences talking to you that’s highly unlikely,” Logan huffed “especially with Virgil.”
Roman glared at the bespectacled teen, “I don’t-”
“Hey, now,” Patton stepped in once more “I know Roman can be a bit eccentric and talk a big game at times but that doesn’t mean he out right judges’ people without getting to know their character a little bit. You assuming that he does is a bit judgy of you now, isn’t it?”
Logan gulped nervously at the glare? Pout? Patton was giving him and he immediately felt guilty, “I…guess so.”
“And Roman,” Patton turned to his best friend with the exact same look “maybe sometimes you’re a bit too quick to assume certain things about people. Speaking your mind is one thing but sometimes you can be kind of rude.”
“You’re right, Pat,” Roman sighed, rubbing his tired eyes “I don’t mean to pick fights it’s just…I’ve had a long morning.”
“I know,” Patton said, eyes softening once more “so have the rest of us but that doesn’t mean we should start turning against each other. We need to stick together, we’re probably the only people on earth that know what each of us is going through right now. So, weather we like it or not we’re a team and we have to have each other’s backs.”
“Falsehood.” Logan said suddenly.
Virgil sighed, irritably, “Lo, don’t start up again…”
“No, I mean that we aren’t the only ones alone in this.” Logan corrected, all eyes were on him again, curious and anticipating.
The last warning bell rung and the four teens were uncertain if they should stay hidden and listen to what Logan had to say or start booking it to class. Thankfully, Logan decided for them, “After school, on the roof, don’t be late. Come on Virgil.”
And with that they all scurried out of the bathroom and raced to their first period.
---
It was almost comedic how none of them ever noticed how many classes they had together. Like aside from their electives they all basically had the same classes together. Roman and Patton usually sit in the back of the class near the window, easier to get away with napping and passing notes, while Logan and Virgil sat near the center where they could easily blend into the crowed and not be called on as often by the teacher. Though that still wouldn’t stop Logan from raising his hand and blurting out answers and corrections. Point being they’ve never noticed each other before, they were in their own world doing their own thing with other students filling in for background noise. But now with their new freakish mutant powers they couldn’t not notice each other, especially with their weird colored auras buzzing and lighting them up like a fucking beckon.
It was like that all day, in every class, they tried to play it off like it was nothing, like nothing has changed and they’re in their own world but it didn’t work. They just kept fucking staring at each other and it didn’t matter if they were subtle about it or not because that stupid zing at the back of their heads would go off every time, they would feel eyes on them, and they knew! They all knew but they kept doing it anyway! Why? Because what else could they do?
Lunch came and went, an internal struggle within each of them debating weather on not they should sit with each other. They had no reason to do so other wise unless they used the excuse of that school field trip project but even then, that was flimsy and suspicious. They did not need anyone else suspecting them of hiding something when Dolion was already on their case.
Speaking of which, Dolion had been keeping an especially close eye on all of them all day. He wasn’t in all of their classes but he was in most and aside from each other they could practically feel his eyes burrowing in to the back of their heads. It did not help that this mutant power made them feel ten times more aware of themselves and the things around them. Their skin crawled when someone would accidently brush against them, they’d flinch when the bell rang, they’d race to their next class to get out of the crowed halls because it was so jam packed with people and noise and smells and they just couldn’t breathe.
Virgil was having the worst time out of all of them. His anxiety got bad sometimes and even on good days it could sneak up on him and leave him with a shitty day but this…this was the fucking worst! He kept accidently sticking to things and Logan had to say behind and help him out and that just made him feel even worse and caused them to be even more late for class.
Roman and Patton watched them from the sidelines, out of sight but never out of range. They weren’t too sure if they should intervene or mind their own business so they just lurked around like creeps. They figured if Logan or Virgil needed help, they would ask them and in turn they would do the same. Still, the day passed and none of them said a word to each other. Not even Logan and Patton who were stuck as lab partners. What would they even say?
“Yeah, nice weather we’re having, also do you think we’ll grow extra limbs now that we have mutant bug powers?”
Electives were the only classes they had by themselves and some how that was an even worse distraction. At least with four other people flashing like beckons you knew someone was right there when you needed them because they would understand your situation. But being alone, surrounded by other students, trying to act normal when you know that is far from the truth, is just horrible. How the hell were they going to get through their club meetings?
---
Patton never thought he would dread going to culinary club but here he was hiding behind the nearby lockers debating weather or not he should just bail and wait on the roof by himself. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending how you look at it, he didn’t have to decided because one of the girls from his club spotted him.
“Hey Patton, it’s good to see you,” Her name was Valerie and she was the sweetest person Patton has ever met “we missed you yesterday, where’d you go?”
“Oh, uh, hi Valerie,” Patton fiddled bashfully with the end of his shirt “I-I got detention.”
“What? Why?” Valerie asked, quite shocked “Out of everyone in this school you’d be the last I’d ever expect to get detention.”
Patton became red with embarrassment, “Well…Dolion played a prank on me and I kind of freaked out. A friend of mine named Logan stood up for me and kind of scolded him but then Dolion got mad and wanted to fight him. Then me and my other two friends, Roman and Virgil, were trying to break them up but then Mr. Larry came in and saw. So, he gave us all detention but it didn’t go on our records and Dolion got extra detention this weekend.”
“Gosh, that must have really sucked,” Valerie said sympathetically.
Patton shrugged, “I just feel bad that I got all my friends in trouble because of something so dumb.”
“Hey now,” Valerie said sternly “it’s not your fault that Dolion was being a jerk and picking on you. Plus, your friends really care about you Patton, they don’t want to see you in distress.”
“Yeah, but I wish I could have done something more then just stand there,” Patton said glumly “if it hadn’t been for them I probably would of ran off crying.”
“Aw Patton,” Valarie sighed “sometimes you’re much too sweet for your own good. And sometimes that sweetness can cause you trouble but you have to remember, you’re worth standing up for.” she reached over and gently grasped his hand, “It’s okay not to feel happy all the time too.”
“Yeah I know,” Patton sighed “it’s just…”
“I know, I know, you don’t want to worry anyone,” She smiled sadly “you must have had a really bad morning to be able to rant to me.”
“I’m sorry.” He apologized.
“No, don’t be,” She assured “it’s good to talk about your problems, it’s a good way to help air out your feelings.”
“Well, thanks for letting me rant.” Patton chuckled.
“Any time,” Valarie replied “now we should get going, the meeting is going to start soon. Also, you never got around to teaching me that lemon square recipe.”
“Oh gosh, that’s right,” Patton said “I am so sorry, I was going to teach you yesterday but then detention and-”
“It’s fine, Patton,” Valarie soothed before he could continue “you have plenty of time to teach me to day if the meeting doesn’t run too long.”
“Absolutely.” Patton beamed, though it wasn’t totally genuine. He was still very stressed and anxious to be in a room full of people alone. Though out in the empty halls talking with Valarie had been nice so it gave Patton a little bit of hope he could do this. But that had just been them alone, what would he do when he was in room full of students and loud baking utensils? Patton gulped as he followed Valarie into the culinary class room and for once hoped for a short meeting.

“One, two, three! One, two, three! Virgil, you’re off again!” Ms. Green sighed as she turned off the stereo. The entire class groaned, this was the third time they had to start the routine over because Virgil kept missing a step or getting off beat or something. It was seriously starting to stress him out more then he already was. Usually doing ballet helped calm his anxiety but right now with all the weird shit happening to his body it’s doing the exact opposite.
“Take five!” Ms. Green announced and the class disbursed into mindless chatter.
Virgil sighed tiredly as he began to trudge back to his bag near the back of the dance studio only to be stopped by Ms. Green. “Mr. Storm, please come here a moment.”
Virgil whined pathetically as he slowly made his way over to his dance instructor who looked very frustrated, “Yes, Ms. Green?”
“What’s going on with you today?” Her frustrated frown morphed into one of concern once she saw Virgil’s distressed face.
“Uh,” Virgil tugged at once side of his beanie nervously “I’m just not…feeling too great. I-I mean, I didn’t feel great last night so it’s kind of…lingering?”
“Is it because of your detention yesterday?” Ms. Green asked, she didn’t look mad or disappointed as Virgil previously thought, just curious.
“Kind of,” Virgil fibbed “there was a bug, I mean, there is a bug going around the school. Not a real bug, of course, like a cold and flu bug. Yeah, like that. Uh, I was sick and the doctor said it was a bug.”
Nailed it.
Ms. Green corked an eye brow suspiciously, “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” Virgil said a little too quickly before sighing “I’m fine, just…gotta find my rhythm again. It’s still getting out of my system…the bug.”
“Ah-huh,” Ms. Green nodded slowly “you’re lucky you don’t compete in anything. Although you really should.”
Virgil gave her a weary smile, having had this conversation too many times before and not wanting it to have it today of all days. Ms. Green kept on insisting that Vigil enter in dance competitions or audition for the production of Swan Lake they’d be doing in the spring. But Virgil kept rebutting that if he could barely get through a simple dance recital without vomiting on stage there was no why he’d be able to last through a four-act performance.
“Still not my thing Ms. Green.” He replied with a tight smile.
Ms. Green sighed, quickly dropping the subject, “Alright, go take five. Stretch out and be ready to go again. Start getting focused.”
“You got it.” Virgil gave her a thumbs up as he began to walk backwards towards his bag. He heard his stomach rumble for the fifth time and groaned as he searched through his backpack for any more chips.
“Skip out on lunch?” A voice asked from behind.
Virgil turned to find Terrance smiling at him with an extra water bottle shoved near his face. He quickly took it before addressing his question, “No, why do you ask?”
“That is a lot of wrappers,” Terrance pointed towards Virgil’s bag which was overflowing with candy and chip wrappers like some sort of volcano “I’m guessing you’re the one that emptied out the vending machine near hall B?
Virgil flushed, embarrassed as he stuffed the wrappers back in his backpack, “N-no, this was breakfast.”
Terrence frowned disapprovingly, “That’s pretty unhealthy.”
“Don’t worry, that’s not the worst thing that’s happened today.” Virgil assured as he finally found one last candy bar and stuffed it in his mouth. Before Terrence could ask what Virgil meant by that Ms. Green was already calling everyone back.

Roman loved play rehearsal, seeing things get slowly piece together as the day of the play got closer and closer. And when you finally go on stage its even more amazing then you could ever imagen because you’ve spent months building this from the ground up, costumes, props, lighting, hours and hours of practice. It was all just great and amazing and Roman loved every minute of it!
“Is this a dagger which I see before me,/ The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.” Roman recited.
“Cut!” His director, Mr. Bell, called out “Roman, your blockings off again.”
Just not today…
Roman groaned, “Sorry, sorry, sorry, let’s- can we do it again?”
“It’s okay,” Mr. Bell sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose “let’s all just…take five.”
And with that the house lights went on and the students disbursed to go do their own thing. Actors huddled together to recite lines, techs came down for their box for fresh air and socializing, crew fiddled around with stage and props, and Roman exited stage left towards the dressing rooms.
Roman hated this, his new abilities were throwing him why off balance in both the physical and mental sense. The stage lights burned his eyes, he could here the whispering backstage, the creaking from the catwalk, and all eyes on him. For once in his life Roman did NOT want to be the center of attention.
“Hey girl!” Roman paused to see Remy waving at him as he came down the latter one of the catwalks.
“Hey Remy.” Roman smiled tiredly, he was in no mood to put up a charming persona and thankfully Remy was the type of person that could care less about keeping up appearances. He liked to “keep it real” like that.
“Oh god, you look like shit,” Remy replied once he was on the ground, sipping on a Starbucks cup that he always seems to have with him “what happened?”
Roman inhaled deeply, “So many things that I can even begin to comprehend myself. But I’m fine, really.”
“Woof,” Remy said “must have been some bad shit that went down because you’re usually a one hit wonder out there. But five takes? You sure you okay, boo? I heard what happened yesterday with that dick Dolion.”
“Yeah, it’s all fine now,” Roman sighed as he stretched his arms “just got to shake it off and get centered again.”
“Mmh, okay,” Remy shrugged nonchalantly “but if you ever need me to beat a hoe just ask. I don’t mind dirtying up my new Doc Martens.”
Roman chuckled, “Thanks but no thanks, I’ll keep that in mind though.”
“No prob babe,” Then Remy smirked “also, I saw you and Virgil Storm getting along quite nicely yesterday. Anything going on there?”
Remy laughed as Roman groaned again, flushing a deep scarlet before scurrying away “I’m gunna go practice my lines elsewhere.”

“Ethan Zuckerman, Associate Professor and Director of the Center of Civic Media, stated that ‘Social media is critically important in giving voice to communities who’ve been systemically excluded from media – people of color, woman, LGBTQIA people, poor people. By giving people a chance to share their under-covered perspectives with broadcast media, social media has a possible role in making the media ecosystem more inclusive and fair’,” Emile Picani stated proudly “we are in an era where word gets around faster and problems can be caught early on to help fix them. We can share information and opinion that everybody can see and sort out issues much faster because of it.”
“Falsehood,” Logan said as soon as Emile finished “what about the manipulation of public opinion over social media platforms which can eventually lead to a critical threat to public life? Samantha Bradshaw, Researcher on the Computational Propaganda project at Oxford University, wrote a paper about how government agencies and political parties are exploiting the use of social media platforms to spread misinformation, exercise censorship and undermine trust in media, public institution, and science. Science Picani!”
“Yes, but where would we have learned any of this without social media,” Emile rebutted “not a lot of people are too keen on the idea of going to the library and reading research papers. Sometimes, small articles online talking about the issue can help spread awareness to others.”
“Yes, but can’t those same articles spread lies and slander at the same time?” Logan countered “Misleading people once more when they could have easily gotten the information from the source.”
“Who says there aren’t articles and groups dedicated to these ideas?” Emile said “In a hilarious state of irony, these groups came together because of social media, they made connections and helped raise awareness towards a common goal. Now, I’m not saying that social media is perfect but it is an important part of our culture. We should be working forward to improve it instead of tearing it down.”
Silence.
Logan chewed at the end of his thumb nail, absolutely stumped on what he should say. He hasn’t been able to think clearly all day. Everything was too loud and too quiet, to fast and too slow, it was driving him crazy.
The buzzer went off and the sound of Mr. Shelton’s voice boomed throughout the room, “Time. Picani wins. Brake time everybody, then we’ll choose teams for the next topic.”
Logan groaned, letting his head drop against the desk with a loud thud. A shadow loomed over him and he turned his head to the side and came face to stomach with Emile Picani’s yellow sweater. He lazily looked up to see the nervous yet concerned smile on Emile’s face.
“May I help you?” Logan mumbled.
Emile shook his head, “No, I was just wondering…are you feeling okay Logan? You were kind of…struggling to keep up back there.”
“No, I wasn’t,” Logan quickly defended, sitting up straight “I just…have a bit of a cold.”
“Oh, yes, of course,” Emile quickly backtrack nervously “but, um, are you sure there’s not something else wrong?”
Curse Emile and his advanced human psychology classes. The kid was already super empathetic as it was as well as the second smartest student at the school. Logan being the first of course.
“What ever do you mean?” Logan said blankly, though inside he was panicking.
“You just seem kind of distracted by…” Emile made a vague gesture with his hands “Everything. Like, you’ve just suddenly realized the world is moving around you. Does that make sense?”
Yes, it did but Logan was not about to admit it because if he did Emile would be able to use that little amount of information to pull everything out of him. Emile wasn’t malicious by any means, next to Patton he was the kindest person you’d ever meet. He just had a way of making people feel comfortable enough to open up about their stress and (ugh) feelings.
So, he lied. “No, it does not make sense.”
Emile stared at him for a minute and Logan tried his best not to squirm under his intense gaze. It felt as if he was trying to search through the inner mechanisms of Logan’s brain just by scanning over his physical form. Finally, he blinked, sighing as he gave Logan a half-hearted smile. “You can be a tough cookie to read sometimes. Then there are other times where you’re an open book. It’s all very confusing.”
Logan didn’t know if he liked that metaphor or not so he just said what he thought was appropriate. “I’m sorry.”
“Oh, no, no, you have nothing to be sorry about Logan,” Emile assured anxiously “I’m just being nosy and weird.”
“I don’t think you’re weird.” Logan said honestly. Yes, Emile was childish and liked cartoon but he was also extremally smart and one of the few people Logan can properly debate with without having to dumb down his vocabulary.
Emile blushed but gave a wide genuine smile, “Thanks for thinking so. Um, I’ll get out of your hair now.”
Logan nodded as he watched Emile walk away to socialize with the other members. His head returned to the desk, cheek pressed against the cool plastic wood, as he stared at the clock counting down the minutes left until he could meet the others.
---
They all bumped into each other on the third floor, literally, they were so jittery with nerves and excitement they were practically sprinting towards the roof. They were quick to collect themselves before silently making their way up the fourth floor towards the stairs leading to the roof. They didn’t have to stay silent but just as it’s been all day, they had no idea what to say to each other, plus the paranoia that someone could be listening in like in the bathroom this morning.
They quickly filed out onto the wide-open space of the roof top, each standing about five feet apart from each other, not moving just, not talking, just listening. They hear the construction happening down the street but not just the noise of the machine scraping against the pavement but the conversations between coworkers about getting a beer after work. They could sense the movement of scurrying students beneath them as they all hurried to catch up with friends and walk home. They looked into the distant skyline where the city clustered together and they could make out every detail of every building, tree, person, and sidewalk. They could smell the warm pretzels being sold down town, cigarette smoke in cafes, and cheap perfume from the boys locker room. They could taste the bile building in their throats, the world around them becoming too much, it frightened them.
“What’s happening to us.” Virgil whimpered, pulling his jacket tighter around himself.
“I-I have a theory,” Logan stuttered out, taking a deep breath to calm himself “we were all bitten by the same enhanced super spider which had previously gone missing during our field trip to Oscorp yesterday.”
“I thought the guide said it was back in the lab.” Patton squeaked out, frantically looking around for more spiders.
“Yeah, how can you be so sure it’s the same spider?” Roman said skeptically.
Logan slid off his back pack and began rummaging through it until he pulled out a jar full of webbing and a familiar little spider inside. Virgil gawked at his best friend, “You brought it to school?”
“I didn’t trust leaving it at home alone,” Logan stated simply “I feared it would escape.”
“Escape…” the spider hissed “Freedom…”
“It talked!” Roman and Patton shrieked, scrambling backwards a few steps.
“Technically, it didn’t,” Logan said coolly, readjusting his glasses “it’s just that we can now hear at a higher frequency and can now get bits and pieces of conversations from-”
“That’s great Einstein but what does that…thing have to do with how we are now!” Roman cut in, getting more and more frustrated as time went on.
Logan glared at him but decided he was ultimately right and should get to the point, not that he would ever tell Roman that. “If we compare our bug bites, I can assure you that they will all look similar. Assuming that we all suffered the same symptoms afterward, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, memory laps, and/or fainting, then woke up like…this, my hypothesis is that the spider’s venom caused a mutated our DNA.”
“How can you be so sure?” Roman asked, taking a step forward with Patton clinging to the back of his shirt like a koala. Roman was ninety percent sure Patton had gotten himself stuck but that was something to worry about later.
“I mean, the evidence is irrefutable,” Logan said “but to be truly sure I’d have to do a blood test but I currently do not have the equipment for that and neither does the school.”
“Of course, you checked for that,” Virgil sighed, wanting to rub his face but worried his hand would get stuck again “So, what now? Are we gunna take it back to Oscorp or something? Because I’m pretty sure it’ll be mighty suspicious when four teenagers walk up to the front desk carrying a multimillion-dollar spider inside a Crofters jam jar.”
“Cookies!” Patton announced loudly, startling everyone, especially Roman since it was right next to his ear. Patton whispered an apology to his friend before detaching, with a bit of difficulty, from his back and searching through his back pack. He pulled out two clear colorful baggies, one filled with scones and another filled with peanut butter cookies.
Patton stepped forward to gift his friends the cookies only to suddenly stop short, “Um, can you…” he gestured towards the jar in Logan’s hands “p-put it away?”
Logan blinked owlishly before suddenly realizing what he meant and quickly tucked away the creature in his back pack, “Oh, yes, right, your, um, arachnophobia. I apologize for my ignorance.”
“Wow, Logan apologizing,” Virgil gasped in fake awe “that’s a first.”
Logan glared at his best friend but was soon faced to face with a smiling Patton, “I hope you like them. I was going to make them last night but then…ya know, that happened and I was a bit…frazzled this morning. So, tell me if they turn out okay, okay?”
“I’m sure they’ll be quite…adequate.” Logan gulped nervously, Patton was way too close but this wasn’t anything new. Patton seemed to have very little personal space with people he deemed his friends but right now with their newfound abilities he was just a burst of color and energy.
“Let’s hope your right.” Patton giggled before moving towards Virgil who took about two large steps back.
“J-just…put ‘em- on the…the…I’ll get them on the ground.” Virgil stuttered out, his hands moving along with his words as if it would help convey his feelings in the situation at hand.
Thankfully Patton got the hint and smiled warmly as he carefully placed the cookies on the ground before stepping back towards Roman. With a relieved sigh Virgil returned to his spot and picked up the bag, wordlessly nodding his thanks towards Patton.
“So, what are we gunna do?” Roman said, suddenly bursting the friendly atmosphere. He was really on edge right now and it was an overwhelming crushing feeling that just kept growing with every passing minute. “You said earlier this morning that there was someone similar to our situation, who?”
Logan cleared his throat, pulling out his phone and tapping a few things, “Right, well, who is someone that is well known to the public who climbs walls, has super strength, and has sort of spider like tendencies.”
It was silent, the three other teens looked clueless and Logan was just a bit disappointed. He turned to Virgil with a look and said, “Seriously, Virgil?”
“Dude, I can’t remember half the things I’ve done today, okay, everything is just like…” Virgil groaned, waving his arms around “and if I’m honest I’m still kind of freaking out, like, internally and maybe a little bit externally too. I don’t know, give it time.”
“Rainbow Weaver,” Logan said blankly “Rainbow Weaver has these same abilities.”
“Rainbow Weaver?” The trio replied, the wheels finally turning in their head.
“Yes.” Logan nodded.
“Okay, wait,” Roman said “two questions: 1) What makes you think Rainbow Weaver will even consider helping us? And 2) Even if he did, where would we find him?”
Logan continued to tap on his phone before flipping it over to show the other, “According to his fan page on Twitter: on 5th street near main.”
“That’s ten blocks away,” Patton said glumly “we’ll never make it on time.”
“Even if we run that’s at least thirty minutes tops.” Virgil added.
“Anymore bright ideas, pocket protector?” Roman snarked.
“Just about,” Logan said coolly, as he began to collect his things before slinging his backpack securely on himself. He turned a whole 360 degrees before stopping in place and making his way towards the left side of the building. The other’s followed, curious as to what he was looking for, they peered over at a few smaller buildings next door clustered together with signs obscuring the view of the roof tops as they reached higher and higher the deeper you went into the city.
“This’ll do.” Logan said as he began to walk back.
“This’ll do for what?” Virgil asked but he wasn’t answered because Logan was now sprinting back towards them and he wasn’t slowing down.
The others, panicked, blocked his path screaming and begging for him to stop and explain what the hell was going on. But even that did nothing to deter the bespectacled teen because he simply jumped, high. It surprised everyone, including Logan himself, when he was able to leap clear over not only all of them but all the way to the next building. He stumbled on his landing, legs tripping his forward before he was able to finally find his footing. Stunted silence and open mouths were left in his wake before Logan snapped out of his stupor and laughed with all the giddy glee of a child who just met his favorite super hero.
“Oh my god, that was exhilarating!” Logan cheered, waving his arms over at his friends “Come on! Come on! You gotta – you gotta do this!”
“You’re fucking crazy!” Virgil wheezed out, gripping onto the side of the building for dear life.
Roman chewed at his bottom lip before finally sighing and running back, “Fuck it.”
“W-wait, Roman, kiddo!” Patton squeaked “Shouldn’t we think this over first?”
“I did think it over,” Roman said, setting himself up for a running start “and I’m not gunna let iDork get ahead of me.”
“You’re both crazy!” Vigil shrieked.
Roman didn’t answer, instead he charged forward, wind whipping his hair and adrenaline pumping throughout his body. He got to the ledge and quickly used it as leverage to leap up, floating in mid air for just a moment before he came rocketing down towards the roof. He didn’t land as far as Logan but he had a much better landing, legs bent as he shakily straightened himself out. Roman looked towards Logan who was smiling like a mad man and Roman couldn’t help but join in his excitement.
“Holy shit you guys!” Roman exclaimed, jumping up and down “You have to try it! It’s amazing!”
Patton gulped nervously before looking towards Virgil, who was just about ready to have an aneurysm. He extended a nervous hand towards the emo boy and asked begged, “Jump with me.”
“What?” Virgil’s voice cracked as he took a step back “Are you serious?”
“Yes, no, kind of…” Patton whimpered “I don’t wanna do this alone! I’m scared a-and you’re scared too. B-but Logan and Roman were able to do it and more then likely we’ll be able to do it too, s-so with both of us pushing us off we’ll have a better chance of landing safer. Right?”
Virgil looked at Patton like he was insane (which he was!) staring between his face and the hand extended towards him. Finally, after a long silence, Virgil sighed, “Screw it.” And firmly took Patton’s hand as they made there way back towards the center of the building.
“If we fall I’m using you as a cushion,” Virgil threatened, hand squeezing Patton’s tightly “I’m just joking, I’m just…really fucking scared right now.”
“It’s okay,” Patton said warmly, squeezing back just as tight “I am too but you don’t need to jump with me if you don’t want to. I’m sure we can figure another thing out.”
“N-no, no, it’s fine,” Virgil assured quickly “it’s just we gotta do it now before I psych myself out.”
Patton nodded firmly, looking ahead as he and Virgil prepared to sprint forward. They heard shouts of encouragement from Logan and Roman, who were still riding on their adrenaline high, as they began their charge. Blood pumped loudly in their ears, legs picking up traction much faster then they were expecting, and just when Virgil thought he was going to freeze up at the last-minute Patton boosted forward giving him a strong tug before they were finally soaring through the sky. They looked to the sky line, at the busy city and its scurrying people and for a moment it was as if they were flying.
They collapsed into a heaping pile on the roof next door, groaning as Logan and Roman rushed over to help them. Virgil was quick to dust himself off, laughing like a lunatic as he did. “That was awesome!”
“Yeah!” Patton chimed in, jumping to engulf Roman in an excited hug.
“We should be able to reach him if we head this way!” Logan cut in through the excitement, pointing towards the building roof tops heading towards the heart of Manhattan.
The boys looked at each other, momentarily questioning weather this was a good idea, before a sly determined grin spread across their faces and they began to sprint, throwing caution to the wind.
---
“Whooohooo!” Patton screamed joyously as he and his friends ran and jumped across the roof tops at a speed, they did not think was possible for a normal human.
They forgotten the map on Logan’s phone long ago and had no idea where they were going but somehow, they just knew they were going the right way. The tingling sensation at the back of their heads tugged them towards their destination as they enjoyed the rush of wind in their ears and adrenaline in their veins.
They reached their destination in no time but since they did not see their intended target anywhere, they decided to circle around a little to see if they could catch him. Though mainly the boys just wanted to see what they could do with their new-found powers. Climbing up the side of buildings, walking across utility wires, and using abandon construction sights as their own personal jungle gym. Somehow, they ended up on the roof of a pretty tall office building and decided to take a rest.
“Jesus Christ!” Virgil laughed hysterically “We’re so high up!”
“Are you okay?” Logan asked, he was concerned, really, he was, but Virgil’s laughter was contagious and the adrenaline was still buzzing in his system.
“No,” Virgil giggled as he laid down on his back “but give me a minute.”
“Deep breaths, kiddo,” Patton said as he flopped down next Virgil “this is a lot of excitement for one day, even for me.”
“I’ll second that.” Roman agreed as he too joined them on the ground.
Logan shrugged and settled himself between Virgil and Roman, all of them star-fished out in a circle watching the clouds roll by. Silence fell upon them once more as they began to soak in all that had happened to them that day. They weren’t as overwhelmed as they had been that morning, maybe running and jumping across buildings let them take out some of that jittery energy they had stored inside. Don’t get them wrong, they were still kind of freaking out but they were a little more calm about it. Especially since they knew that they weren’t alone in their endeavor. Sure, they might not be able to get Rainbow Weaver to help them but at least they had each other and that was a comfort that they were all truly grateful for.
“Do you think we can shoot spider webs like Rainbow Weaver can?” Roman asked, braking the peaceful silence.
“I’m not quite sure,” Logan said honestly “I tried at home but I just can’t seem to produce anything. Then again, not all spiders can make webs.”
“Hmm, true.” Virgil murmured, eyes closed as he practiced some deep breathing exercises.
Roman sat up, a determined look on his face, “I’m gunna try it.”
“How you gunna do that?” Patton asked, sitting up to face his friend with a slightly worried look in his eyes. Roman had that look again, he always got that look when he had a dangerous idea that would either get him in trouble or injured. It was the same look he had before he jumped off the school roof to chase after Logan.
“Well,” Roman began, hopping up to his feet “first I need to do a test shot. Uh, how does Rainbow Weaver do his…thing?” He began to flex his hand into various positions and poses.
Virgil, who was still on the ground, raised his arm up and did a sort of punk rock gesture, “Like this.”
Thwhip!
Virgil’s eyes snapped open when he heard the sound and felt a sliver of something eject itself from his wrist. He was surrounded by three pairs of shocked eyes as he slowly stood up, looking down at his hand with awe and slight concern.
“Do it again!” Logan said excitedly.
Virgil aimed towards a small utility shed near the other side of the roof and thwiped! A long string of…something shot out from Virgil’s wrist and stuck to one end of the utility shed while Virgil held the other end. “Holy shit!”
“Fascinating,” Logan gasped in awe as he tugged on the silk string “you’re able to create your own webbing and by the feel of it it’s exactly as the guide described it, like steel cables.”
“It feels weird.” Virgil murmured as he detached the end of the string near his wrist.
“I’ll bet.” Roman said, looking over Virgil’s shoulder to get a better look at the webbing.
Patton, meanwhile, was trying to test out if he could do it too, he couldn’t. “Aw, I don’t think it works on me. What about you Roman?”
“Uh, let’s see.” He replied, taking a stance next to Virgil and aiming his arm towards the same shed. He pressed down on his palm with his two middle fingers and…thwip! “Holy shit…that felt weird!”
“I know right!” Virgil chimed in as they all now began to look over Roman’s web string.
“It would seem that me and Patton are incapable of producing web,” Logan deduced “but I’m fairly certain we may be able to produce some sort of silk, as all spiders do. It’s just the means of figuring it out…”
“I’m gunna swing across the other building!” Roman announced suddenly, causing everyone to jump and stare as he raced towards the edge of the building.
They were quickly snapped out of their surprise as they realized what Roman had said and went to chase him down before he did something stupid. Unfortunately, they were not quick enough because Roman had already launched another string of web and was getting ready to jump.
“Roman, wait!” Patton cried.
“It might not be safe!” Logan warned.
“Get down from there you idiot!” Virgil shouted.
“Tally ho!” Roman hollered as he pushed himself off the building and swung through the air.
Roman seemed fine at first, swinging through the air above the busy streets like some sort of extreme swing set. But then he realized, as the building he attached himself to got closer and closer, he had no idea what he was doing or how to stop. The only thing he could do at the moment was shut his eyes, curl up into a ball, and wait for impact. He vaguely recalled hearing the others scream before he was suddenly wooshed up into the air again.
When Roman opened his eyes to see what he had collided with on his way to his impending doom all he could see was rainbow. A rainbow arm holding him tight against a rainbow clad body and when he looked up to see a rainbow masked, white eyed figure a familiar buzzing was felt at the back of his head and he then noticed that the masked figure’s aura was a multi colored light show.
“You’re just like me!” Was all Roman could think to blurt out.
The figure looked down at him, slightly confused, until his eyes widen in sudden realization and he said, “Holy shit, you’re right.”
Once safely back on top of the building Roman was promptly tackled down by a sobbing Patton, “Don’t ever, ever do that again!”
“Yeah, not my brightest moment.” Roman admitted sheepishly.
The reunion was cut short due to a very furious looking Virgil who came stomping over, separated the two friends, then proceeded to punch Roman’s shoulder, hard. The theater geek cried out in protest, taking a few steps back before Virgil could get another swing in, “Ow, what the fuck!”
“You could have gotten yourself fucking killed you moron!” Virgil growled.
“That was very reckless of you, Roman,” Logan added crossly “even for your standards.”
“Oh, sez the one that convinced us to jump off a building,” Roman snapped back “excuse me for trying to follow the ‘smart ones’ lead and thinking this was a good idea.”
“The buildings were closer together and I calculated the right momentum needed to get across!” Logan countered, taking a step towards Roman “Given our new-found abilities it was obvious to be an easy jump!”
“Yeah, for you! How could you have been so certain for the rest of us, smartass?” Roman rebutted, getting up in Logan’s face as well.
“Simple physics really, something that a half wit like you could never understand!” Logan growled.
“Was it really physics or one of your scientific guesses?” Roman sneered.
“It’s called a theory you brainless Neanderthal!” Logan replied.
“Erlenmeyer trash!”
“Drama turd!”
“Cotton headed ninny muggings!”
“What the hell does that even mean?”
“Jesus Christ there are four of you!” The masked figure said as he got in between the two fighting teens.
Silence overtook the group as they stared up and finally realized who was talking to them. Clad in a rainbow spider themed suit with a sort of glider/cape mesh between his arms, his aura a burst of bright colors, it was the one, the only…
“R-R-Rainbow Weaver!” Virgil squeaked out, completely star structed.
“Yeah, and who might you guys be? Also, what’s going on with…” Rainbow Weaver gestured towards the group as if pointing out the colorful aura he could also see around them “…everything?”
“R-Rainbow Weaver…” Was apparently all Virgil could say now.
“Is everything okay?” Rainbow Weaver said worriedly as he scanned over the group of teens frozen in awe. Not that he wasn’t use to this but he just kind of figured out that these boys might have super powers like him so he really needed answers like now.
“Um, m-mister Rainbow Weaver, sir, uh…” Logan stuttered out, uncharacteristically shy at the moment, “w-we were actually looking for you but we couldn’t – uh, we were searching the city and someone on Twitter said they saw you here – around here and, uh, we kind of, um, wanted to talk…to you…”
“Take your time kid.” Rainbow Weaver soothed gently, the teen looked like he was getting ready to have a stroke.
“We got bit by a spider!” Patton blurted out before covering his mouth shut.
“Okay, go on.” Rainbow Weaver said with an encouraging nod.
Patton bashfully removed his hands from his mouth, fidgeting in place as all eyes were on him now, “Uh, well, we went on a field trip to a science lab thing in Oscorp where they had these creepy, crawly mutant spiders and one of them had escaped but the tour guide said not to worry because it was probably back in the lab, but it wasn’t, so it escaped and some how bit all of us and then we woke up with weird powers like: we can stick to the wall and jump really high and everything is really loud and bright and we have these weird color auras and I couldn’t fit into any of my cute clothes and we didn’t know what to do so Logan said we should find you and ask cause you have similar powers to us so we jumped off the school building and ran around the city to find you but we couldn’t, then Virgil found out he can shoot web but me and Logan can’t so Roman tried to swing to the next building over and almost died and then you came and I’m really scared right now so can you please tell us what’s going on!”
Patton finally stopped to suck in a big gulp of air having been so nervous he said everything in one breath. Roman went over to rub soothing circles on his distressed friend’s back as Patton regained the ability to breath. Rainbow Weaver, meanwhile, was trying to process all that had been said but also make sure that Patton was doing okay.
“Okay, first, I need you to calm down for me,” Rainbow Weaver cooed, a firm hand on Patton’s shoulder “breath in for four…hold for seven…out for eight…good.”
Once Patton was calmed down some Rainbow Weaver continued, “Second order of business, how old are you guys and what are your names?”
“I’m Roman Marigold and I’ll be seventeen in a month,” Roman answered as he hugged Patton close “this is my best friend Patton Foster and he’s seventeen.”
“I’m Logan Quinn,” Logan pipped up, finally pulling himself together “I’m seventeen as well as my friend Virgil Storm here.”
Virgil gave a shy wave, somewhat hiding behind his taller friend, Rainbow Weaver waved back, a kind smile visible through his mask. It seemed odd how quick the boys were to trust him, even if he was a famous super hero, he was still a stranger. But be it because of their weird aura or the kindness in Rainbow Weaver’s voice the boys knew he could be trusted.
“Okay, third order of business, is the spider that bit you guys dead or still crawling around the city?” Rainbow Weaver asked.
“Oh no, I have it in my backpack!” Logan said, quickly removing his backpack and rummaging around for the jar he had it in earlier.
“Excuse me?” Rainbow Weaver said confused before a jar with a colorful, weird looking spider was shoved in his direction. He took a step back to get a better look at it and vaguely heard Patton whimpering fearfully in the background. He sighed, scratching the back of his head, “Well, that’s just great, Oscorp didn’t learn after the first time it happen.”
“First time?” Logan asked curiously, pulling the jar back towards his chest, the spider skittering nervously.
“How do you think I got like this?” Rainbow Weaver chuckled, hollow and devoid of enthusiasm “But, yeah, this has happened before. A few years back, when I was in high school actually, god only knows what they’ve been able to do now with all the technological advances throughout the years.”
“What do you mean?” Virgil asked, curiosity finally letting him find his voice.
“Well, I-” Rainbow Weaver began but was cut off by four loud rumbling stomachs. His eyes widen with surprise at the blushing teens before bursting out into laughter. “God, you kids must be hungry. Having mutant powers will take a lot out of you, I’ll tell you that, especially if you’re still a growing teenager. How ‘bout we go out and get something to eat and I’ll try to explain everything as best as I can?”
“But don’t you have to watch the city?” Roman asked.
Rainbow Weaver shrugged, “It ain’t going nowhere, besides I have my ways of figuring out if I’m needed or not.”
“Um, are you sure?” Virgil asked timidly “We don’t want to keep you from, you know, important things.”
“Kid, right now this is the most important thing on my list,” Rainbow Weaver assured “I know for sure I would have liked someone to talk to when I was going through all this mess.”
“Um, mister Rainbow Weaver,” Patton chirped “not that we aren’t thankful that you’ll help but wouldn’t we look suspicious walking together on the street or jumping across buildings with you?”
“Not if I’m in civilian clothes, which by the way, I should have a pack here somewhere.” Rainbow Weaver wandered off towards the utility shed across the building and opened it to reveal a plain black backpack squished under an electrical control panel.
“Civilian?” Roman said aloud before realizing what was happening “Wait, isn’t revealing your true identity against some sort of hero’s code or something? I mean, unless you’re the Avengers but-”
“It’s fine,” Rainbow Weaver cut in having already finished changed, they hadn’t even turned away for a full minute! He was wearing some worn, baggy clothes that had probably come from a thrift store and was now stuffing his Rainbow Weaver costume into his bag, all was left was the mask he still had on. “I mean you can’t expect us to have an open honest conversation with each other if I’m hiding behind a mask, right?”
Casually, as if he wasn’t just entrusting four teenagers with his biggest secrete, Rainbow Weaver removed his mask to reveal a familiar face that had Roman and Patton silently squealing, Virgil to be even more star struck, and caused Logan’s jaw to hit the floor. The man before them ruffled his peppered brown hair nervously as he gave a lopsided smile, “Uh, hi, my name is Thomas Sanders…we have a lot to talk about.”
Spanish Spoken:
“Rest a little, my love, the doctor said you had a sickness that had been going around. Patton has it too, but I've heard that he's fine now, he just needs to rest. Do not go to school if you do not feel like it. There is a broth in the refrigerator to heat up if you are hungry.”
“Stupid sticky hands!”

in sickness and in health [one-shot]
Tumblr media
Flu season returns, and Ben is the first to fall victim to it. But that's okay, because he and Rey have promised to always take care of each other - through thick and thin, in sickness and in health, whether it's seven days or seven months...
(The one in which Ben gets a flu, and Rey gets a stomach flu... or does she?)
After an unplanned month-long hiatus, I’m back! ... with yet another plotless fluffy one-shot, because it’s important to stay on-brand, guys.
Also available on AO3. And hey, maybe check out my Twitter or Ko-fi?
Ben ❤️❤️❤️[04:26PM]: I think I’m dying
Rey rolls her eyes at her husband’s dramatic text and huffs out a little laugh under her breath as she replies. His whiny exaggeration and – more tellingly – the lack of proper punctuation are obvious indicators of his condition, but it’s hardly as serious as his message would suggest.
Rey [04:27PM]: Pretty sure it’s just the flu, babe
Ben ❤️❤️❤️[04:28PM]: Come home anyway Miss you Please
She shakes her head at the texts rapidly popping up on her screen and chances a look around the office. The workweek ends in just half an hour, and most people are already winding down for the day, either putting the finishing touches on whatever it is they’re working on or discreetly starting to shut things down and pack up to leave as soon as the clock strikes five.
It’s probably okay for her to leave early just this once.
Rey [04:31PM]: You’re a bad influence, Ben Solo Fiiiine Leaving work soon, will swing by the store on the way home to pick up a couple of things Try to survive without me for a little longer, okay? Love you ❤️
“Hey, Rose?”
Her cubicle neighbor wheels into sight with a smile on her face. “Hey, what’s up?”
“Ben’s sick, so I think I’m gonna leave early and go get some stuff for him. Can you just let people know if anyone comes looking for me?”
“Sure thing,” Rose agrees easily as she watches Rey pack up for the day. “Send my regards to Ben. Oh, and let me know if you guys need anything.”
With one final click of her mouse, Rey’s workstation is shut down and packed up for the day. “Will do. Thanks, Rose, you’re the best.” She shoulders her bag as she stands and leans down to give Rose a quick hug goodbye, and by the time Ben replies to her message Rey is already on her way down to her car.
Ben ❤️❤️❤️[04:37PM]: Thank you thank you thank you Love you too See you soon, Nurse Rey 😉
If the uncharacteristic use of an emoji is any indication, he’s probably pretty feverish already.
Rey sighs as she pulls out from the underground parking lot and straight into traffic. There’s no escape, not even with a ten-minute head start on everyone else. By the time she finally gets home, armed with the spoils of a quick detour, the winter sun has long since disappeared and so has what little energy Ben managed to derive from his feverish state.
She finds him asleep on the couch, curled up in a quilt from their bed while the TV casts dancing shadows across his face. Rey takes a moment to smile at the scene before she heads straight for the kitchen, careful not to wake Ben as she puts the kettle on and sets aside her purchases. It’s only once she’s armed with some lemon ginger tea and a plate of saltines that she heads back out to her sleeping husband and gently shakes him awake.
“Don’t wanna,” Ben whines even before his eyes are open, face scrunching up as he catches a whiff of the dreaded tea. Rey sets everything down on the coffee table before she braces herself against the couch and pulls, a determined force meeting a stubborn object.
“C’mon, up you go,” she insists as Ben groans and grumbles, and eventually he opens his eyes just long enough to take pity on his wife, forehead creased with effort and chest heaving from exertion. “No complaining from you,” Rey orders as she retrieves the tea and crackers and foists them upon a reluctant Ben. “I had to deal with looks because of this, you know.”
Bleary-eyed and two seconds away from a sip, Ben seizes upon the opportunity for a distraction. “Looks? What kind of looks?”
Rey shakes her head at him with a knowing smile and nudges the cup closer, pointedly silent until he gives in with a sigh and gulps down half the cup.
“Apparently Leia’s idea of an emergency flu supply run looks a whole lot like a morning sickness starter pack,” she explains as he starts nibbling on a saltine with considerably less disgust. “Maz even came out from the back to ask if congratulations are in order.”
“As if I’d make you buy your own morning sickness supplies,” Ben scoffs as he washes the cracker down with the rest of his tea, making a show of draining every last bit for her.
She runs a hand through his sleep-rumpled hair before sliding her hand down to gently pat his cheek. “Good boy. Think you can handle some soup?” Rey asks as she gathers his cup and plate and makes to leave the couch. “And for the record, I’d be perfectly capable of getting my own saltines, pregnant or not.”
Ben reaches for her wrist, his grip feverish and looser than usual. “I know,” he assures her, his thumb stroking the inside of her wrist. “But you wouldn’t have to. I’d take care of you. I’ll always take care of you – you know that, right?”
Even with his eyes fever-glazed, Ben still looks at her like he holds all the world’s sincerity in his heart; she doesn’t think he’s ever made her a promise with anything less than that. Rey smiles as she leans down to kiss his burning forehead. “I know, baby. But for now maybe let me do the caretaking, okay?”
“For now,” he relents, and lets her go with a loopy smile that’s only partially flu-caused.
Ben continues to be sick for the next five days, and by the fourth so is Rey.
“You did this to me,” she accuses him on Tuesday night, squirming as he pulls her overheated body closer to his. “I told you you were going to get me sick.”
“And I told you it was going to happen whether or not I kissed you,” Ben counters easily, his voice almost back to normal after days of sounding like he’s hacking up a lung. “Besides, I promised to take care of you too, didn’t I?”
Rey settles against his chest with a huff. “You better.” She knows she’s being snippy, but she figures it’s well-deserved because somehow, Ben managed to transform his regular flu into some kind of stomach flu from hell before passing it on to her. Her rational brain knows that’s not how it works, but rational thinking went out the window after the fourth time she failed to stomach a goddamn cracker.
Ben presses a kiss to her clammy temple. “I will. I’ll wait on you hand and foot until you’re 100% back to normal, okay? I promise.”
He keeps his promise for a whole week, tending to her every need without so much as an aggravated sigh even when she wakes him up multiple times a night with a coughing fit or sudden bout of nausea. So when Ben does finally suggest she see a doctor, she knows it’s not because he’s tired of playing nurse.
“I’m just worried, sweetheart,” he murmurs against her sweaty temple one morning when he’s running late, sitting on the bathroom floor with her instead of rushing out the door. “At least take another day off?”
“I’ve already stayed home for a whole week,” Rey protests as she struggles to get to her feet, only to have Ben scoop her up and seat her on their counter. “Besides, it’s probably just the last of this bug making its way through my system. I’ll be okay, baby.”
Ben frowns at her, complete with a crease between his brows and everything, but Rey maintains eye contact and refuses to back down. She knows he won’t hesitate to call in sick for her, won’t think twice before taking the day off himself to care for her, but at some point things have to go back to normal. And if her body refuses to acknowledge that, she’s more than willing to force it to play along.
“Look, staying cooped up in bed can’t be good for me,” Rey points out as she takes his hands in hers and gives them a little squeeze. “Maybe getting out of the apartment and actually moving around a bit will help me bounce back.”
“I don’t think that’s how it works,” Ben says, but his shoulders sag and seconds later he lets out a defeated sigh. “But okay. Just… promise me you’ll call if you’re not feeling well?”
Rey smiles and presses a kiss to his jaw, painfully aware of the lingering acidic taste in the back of her throat. “I promise. Now go, you’re going to be late!”
It takes another five minutes before Ben actually leaves, and another hour after that before she makes her way out of the apartment. Rey’s not too worried about that, though; Holdo made it clear yesterday that she doesn’t expect Rey in at all this week, so she’ll hardly mind a little tardiness.
She’s a little over an hour late by the time she gets to her desk, but everyone’s too busy asking after her health to care about that. It takes what feels like an eternity before her coworkers finally break apart from the circle they’ve formed around her cubicle and get back to work, leaving her alone with Rose.
“I know you’re probably sick of talking about this,” Rose says with an apologetic little smile, “but are you sure you’re okay?”
“I mean, I might avoid the breakroom today, but other than that I’m perfectly fine,” Rey assures her. “Really, Rose, I’m practically back to normal. It’s just a bit of nausea being stubborn.”
Rose, already half-turned away, suddenly spins back to her. “Nausea?”
“Yeah, the joys of a stomach flu, right? All my other symptoms disappeared days ago, but I still can’t keep anything down. I gave Ben hell for getting me sick, but it probably wasn’t even him. He was lucky enough to just get the regular– What?” Rey interrupts herself, skin prickling under Rose’s scrutiny.
Her friend has never been one to mince words, not even back when they were just colleagues, but there’s something delicate and careful about Rose’s next question. “Rey… are you sure it’s just a flu?”
“I mean, what else could it–”
She freezes up the second the thought occurs to her, rendered speechless mid-sentence.
Rose gives her a little smile. “Yeah. That.”
They spend their lunch break at the nearest CVS.
When Ben gets home on Thursday, she’s sitting cross-legged on the couch and twisting her fingers together into a hopeless, nervous knot.
“I went to the doctor today.”
He drops everything in a heartbeat, barely stops to kick the door shut behind him before he’s hurrying over to her side and taking her hands in his. “Rey, why didn’t you– I would’ve– oh god, is everything okay?”
She’d planned to build up to it a little, but Rey can’t bear the look of utter terror on her poor husband’s face for another second. “Ben, I’m fine,” she assures him, leaning down for a lingering kiss before she pulls him up to sit next to her. “It’s just…”
“Just?” Ben echoes, looking only slightly less terrified than he had ten seconds ago.
Rey decides to put him out of his misery.
“Remember that deal we made last week, to take care of each other?”
Ben nods. “Yes, of course,” he says as his brows knit together in concern. “Rey, whatever it is… I’m here for you, sweetheart. Always will be. Just tell me, please.”
She rises up on her knees to press their foreheads together, looping her arms around Ben’s neck as his hands find her waist. “I’m okay, I promise. It’s just… you definitely got the short end of the stick, babe.”
He draws back to frown at her. “What do you mean?”
Rey brings one hand up to cup his face, brushing her thumb along his cheek as she smiles. “Well, I only had to take care of you for a week.”
“Okay…?” Ben replies, concern slowly giving way to confusion.
She moves her free hand down to one of his, pulls it from her side to her abdomen. “Meanwhile you’re going to have to deal with this,” Rey whispers, applying the slightest bit of pressure on his hand and her stomach, “for another seven months.”
It takes a second, but she can see the exact moment Ben’s brain breaks. His eyes are fixed on hers but she knows he’s not actually looking at her, a million miles away as his lips part but nothing comes out, not until a full thirty seconds later when he finally says–
“Oh.”
And then, as his eyes trail down to their joined hands – “Oh.”
“Terrible deal, wasn’t it?” Rey laughs when he finally returns his attention to her, only for her laugh to turn into a gleeful shriek as Ben gathers her up in his arms and jumps to his feet to swing her around, his exuberant laugh joining her rare giggles in the moments between kisses.
“Are you kidding me?” he grins once she’s finally grown dizzy enough to ask him to put her back down, and Rey blinks back a sudden well of tears as her husband kneels before her and presses a reverent palm to her belly.
“Best deal ever,” Ben declares, and doesn’t change his mind even once throughout the next seven months of morning sickness and midnight cravings.
Was this just another excuse to write devoted, married Reylo? ... Why yes, yes indeed.
Hard to believe it's been more than a month since I last posted anything, but time's weird like that. I'm glad to finally be back after a particularly hectic month, and I hope I'm not too rusty!
As always, thanks for reading and please don't hesitate to like/comment/reblog!
