MAY 2023
“YOU GOT YOUR BACK BLOWN OUT BY KID CUDI?!? WHAT THE FUCK!” You shouted on the phone.
You and Jenna were currently on FaceTime, she was in her last fitting for her Met Gala outfit. She was bored waiting for the designer to come and make potential adjustments. So she called you to entertain her someway. She regrets calling you now.
You were doing your due diligence as a baby mama and friend to watch Jenna’s work. You started with The Babysitter: Killer Queen. It was alright in your opinion, you gave it a 7/10. Next, you watched The Fallout. It made you tear up and you applauded Jenna on her work. You considered it her best character.
Then, you watched both Scream movies and now you’re watching X. She tried to get you to not watch the movie by not even telling you about it. You had to look up her filmography to find out about it.
“You’re so lucky I have my headphones in” Jenna rolled her eyes.
“Nah you ain’t tell me this movie like that. I was jumpscared with so much ass and titties and now I gotta see you have sex with Mr. Day N’ Nite. Insane” You stated.
“I told you not to watch it. Actually I specifically remember withholding the information” Jenna said.
“Hm. They did you dirty by pairing you with that white man though” You shrugged and ate a fistful of popcorn.
“Shut up” Jenna mumbled.
Your eyes slowly drifted away from the movie to the phone screen. Jenna was preoccupied fixing the nail polish on her nails. She was doing something so simple yet captivating. You couldn’t take your eyes off her. The feelings you felt for her was starting to scare you.
“So, Nancy helped me book an appointment with the obstetrician not far from you” Jenna spoke bringing you out your thoughts.
“You did it for here? Why not back in your hometown, you know to be closer with your family” You questioned.
“It was the best one and…I always wanted to live in New York. I also want to be far away as possible from my mother when I tell her that I’m pregnant” Jenna smiled.
You laughed taking in the information, “When’s the appointment?”
“Tomorrow morning, 9am” Jenna replied.
“I’ll be there” You playfully salute to her. You turn your attention back to the movie. It was now on the part where the white man get killed by the old lady brutally.
“Speaking of families, how exactly are you going to tell yours?” Jenna asked.
“I’ll just call my brother and tell him. Now, for my mom, I’m gonna need a police riot shield” You huffed.
"You and I are in the same boat. I'm praying for you more though" Jenna said.
Your head snapped toward her, "Nah, don't say that."
Jenna chuckled at the expression on your face. The door behind her opened and the designer walks in. "I have to go. I'll call you later" Jenna said.
"Okay...wait you don't get your back broken like a glow stick anymore in this movie right?" You jokingly asked.
Instead of a verbal response, you got the sound of the FaceTime call ending. You laughed out loud and placed your phone on the charger and turned back to the movie.
Meanwhile with Jenna, she rolled her eyes secretly amused as she hung up on you. It was starting to get hard for her to ignore the growing feelings she had for you. She stalked your Instagram, staring at each photo for at least 10 minutes. She stayed up late last night and watch all your YouTube videos.
“Okay, since you’re not showing yet. The dress still fits perfectly but we will loosen it up around the waist just touch” Thom complimented.
Jenna looked at herself in the mirror, “I feel good in it. It feels good, I’m really happy with it” Jenna smiled.
Thom and Jenna continued discussing the dress some more before Thom had to leave to another client. He bid Jenna a bye and congratulations and left the building. Now, it was just Enrique, Nancy, Hudson, and Big L in the room.
A phone alert has Jenna snapping her head to her phone but unfortunately it was not her phone that made the sound. Enrique snorts at Jenna’s actions. An embarrassed blushed appears on her face.
“Shut up Enrique” Jenna mumbled.
“I’ve never seen like this before. It’s adorable” Enrique chuckled.
“It’s just hormones” Jenna lied.
“Yeah no it’s not. You know it’s okay to like her right. I mean the both of you kinda skipped a couple of steps but it’s good to backtrack” Enrique joked.
Jenna playfully punched his shoulder which made him laugh. Nancy let out a little giggle at the home. Hudson just grumbled something incoherent to himself.
“What does she look like anyway? I wanna see if your baby is going to be ugly or not” Enrique said.
Jenna rolled her eyes and grabbed her phone. She went to Instagram and went to your profile.
“This is the most recent photo” Jenna said.

“Oh my….she got a brother?” Enrique asked.
Jenna laughed, “She does actually but he lives in Barbados.”
“I always wanted to go to Barbados. When’s my vacation?” He joked.
Jenna just shook her head while laughing. She carefully took off the dress and Enrique hung it up on the mannequin.
“You know it still hasn’t fully hit me that you’re about to become an actual mother. Shit is wild” Enrique commented.
“You and me both. I downloaded this pregnancy app and currently my baby is the size of a large strawberry” Jenna smiled and placed her hand on her stomach.
“Ain’t all strawberries large though?” Nancy questioned.
“I guess not” Jenna shrugged and sat down in a chair. Her stomach growled loudly.
“Get used to that. You’re gonna wanna eat twice more than usual.” Nancy said.
A text message alert can heard throughout the room. Jenna picked up her phone.
NYC 🩵: yo u got anything else to do today?
Hollywood 🤰🏻: no I’m free for the rest of the day
Hollywood 🤰🏻: why?
NYC 🩵: I want to see you
Jenna’s heart fluttered at the message. She bit her lip and smirked.
Hollywood 🤰🏻: what are we gonna do?
Jenna watched as the text bubbles appear and then disappeared. It happened a few more times before the text bubbles stayed.
NYC 🩵: i mean…whatever you wanna do shawty. I’m down with whatever 😁
“Let me guess, it’s her” Enrique smirked and tried to peek at Jenna’s phone she turned away. “Ohh not y’all sending spicy messages”.
“We’re not sending spicy messages. She just said she wants to see me” Jenna smiled.
“See you as in watching movies or see you as in Neighbors know my name?” Enrique joked.
Suddenly, a loud slam can be heard throughout the room. Everyone looked confused at the sudden sound and disappearance of Hudson. But shrugged it off.
Hollywood 🤰🏻: I’m hungry
NYC 🩵: what u want
Hollywood 🤰🏻: seafood
NYC 🩵: u like seafood boils? I know a banging spot that I can get
Hollywood 🤰🏻: absolutely
NYC 🩵: bet 🫡
“You’re all finished for the day Jenna. Go spend it with your baby momma” Nancy said.
“Thanks guys” Jenna said and grabbed her things. She hugged Enrique and Nancy before walking to the door.
“Don’t get pregnant…oh wait” Enrique joked.
Jenna stuck up her middle finger and Enrique and Nancy’s laugh can be heard as she left the room.
🤰🏻🩵
45 minutes later, Jenna finally arrived at your apartment. She texted you that you were here. A couple of minutes later, you came down in a gray tank top, gray shorts, and your slides.
“Yo Hollywood” You greeted and helped her out of the SUV. Jenna smiled and wrapped her arms around your waist. It was unexpected but you wrapped your free arm around her back and hugged her tight.
Jenna looked up you with a certain spark in her eyes. You noticed but decided to look away from her.
“Big L, I got you a boil too. You ain’t allergic to seafood right?” You asked.
“Nah I’m not. Appreciate it though” Big L said appreciative and took the bag of food. You nodded in response.
The two of you then head into the apartment complex. You lived on the 6th floor of the building, the nicest floor out the entire building. When you applied for the place, the landlord tried to stick you in a moldy and roaches infested apartment but one of the neighbors put you on game and helped you get this one.
“Welcome to mi casa” You said as you walked into your apartment. It was two bedroom and one bathroom. Their was music softly playing throughout the apartment from your speaker on the counter.
Jenna looked around the thankfully, clean apartment.
“Not bad” Jenna playfully shrugged.
“Yeah it’s not the high rise, plants in the windows, Hollywood type of apartment but it’s something” You chuckled.
Jenna giggled and sat down at the dining table with the food.
“I didn’t get yours with sauce on it. I got it on the side, it’s a Cajun style sauce and it’s a little spicy. I looked up if pregnant woman can eat spicy stuff, they said it was safe but might cause heartburn or indigestion so I also got a lemon garlic sauce too just in case.” You ranted.
Jenna looked at you with admiration in her eyes, “Thank you. I like spicy stuff so it shouldn’t be a problem.”
You smiled and the two of you engaged in a light conversation as you ate. You took the sausages from her bag and you gave her your corn. You also helped her with cracking the crab legs open and showing her how to get the meat in one piece.
You and Jenna finish your food and clean up before sitting on the couch. You sat in the middle while she sat at the end with her back against the armrest and her feet in your lap.
“Are you wishing for a boy or girl?” Jenna asked.
“I’m wishing for a healthy baby. I genuinely don’t care if it’s a boy or girl” You shrugged.
“Good answer. I want a girl though” Jenna said.
“That’s surprising. Most mothers want boys” You said.
“Girls are more fun in my opinion. But either way I’m going to love our child regardless of gender” Jenna stated.
She then sat up, scooted closer, and looked at the number tattoo on your wrist. “What’s this mean?”
“It’s my angel number. 555. It’s means change. Changes are coming and that I shouldn’t be worry or scared just have trust in the process” You explained.
“What about this one?” Jenna said as she pointed to another tattoo. This one was a small writing.
“Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes. It was my second ever tattoo. Believe it or not I was a shy kid before my junior year. I used to let people walk over me and bully me and take me for advantage. That was until the last day of sophomore year, I was on the yearbook committee and I had a really good idea but I was too scared and one of the other students stole it and took credit for it. My yearbook teacher pulled me aside one day and told me she knew I was the one that came with the idea. She told me, “you’re never going to get what you want if you never speak up. Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes because you never know who could be listening”. It’s a quote that stuck with me ever since” You explained.
“You had a great teacher” Jenna commented.
“Yeah, she reached out to me a couple of months ago and told me she loved my videos. It was wholesome” You smiled. Your hand start to rub her thigh unconsciously. “What about you? You got any ink?” You asked.
“Nope. I want one though. Maybe for my first one I’ll get our baby’s name behind my ear” Jenna answered. You nodded in response and continued rubbing her thigh. Your eyes kept looking down to her soft lips.
You wanted to feel them on yours, it’s been a minute since you felt any intimacy. You were longing for her soft touch.
Jenna’s eyes traveled down to your hand. She was starting to grow hot. Her hormones making it very difficult to keep in check.
“Jah?” Jenna called out.
“Hmm?” You hummed in response.
“Kiss me” Jenna demanded softly.
You leaned in and connected your lips to hers. Jenna immediately deepened the kiss as soon as she could. She climbed into your lap and her hands were placed on your cheeks. You placed your hands on hips. The kiss was starting to get sloppy and eager.
Jenna pulled away and took off her top leaving her in her navy blue bra. Her lips then latched onto your neck.
“You know…we should…talk about our relationship” You struggled to get out due to the pleasure.
Jenna placed butterfly kisses on your neck until her lips found your pulse. She then began to suck on the area. Your hands gripped her waist tighter and a small hiss escaped your lips. She smirked against you, happy that she found your sweet spot. She continued sucking until she felt satisfied with the hickey she left on your skin.
Your lips connect once more, your tongues clash and you slide your right hand up her back. Your fingers find her bra strap and with one hand you undo it. You help her pull it off your body. This time your lips leaves hers and attach them to her sweet spot. A sigh of pleasure leaves her lips and her hand gets tangled in your hair.
Your left hand grabs onto her slightly larger breast and begins to massage them.
Thank god for this pregnancy.
Your fingers rolling and pleasurably tugging at her hardened nub. The hand in your hair start to scratch at your scalp which felt really good. You take your attention away from her hickey littered neck.
Yikes, her make up person is going to have a field day with that.
Your lips clamp around her nub. Your tongue swipe over it a few times before sucking on it.
“Oh my god” Jenna moaned softly.
You let your teeth graze over it just a tad bit before switching your attention to the other breast. While you were giving her breasts attention, Jenna slipped down a little to sit on your knees before her hand found it’s way into your sweatpants. Her warm hand quickly found their prize. The long and girthy beast that was growing in your pants.
You pull away from her breasts and look into her lust filled eyes. You lifted your hips and pushed your sweatpants along with your underwear off your hips. Jenna got up from your legs and pushed the rest of it off your legs. She got on her knees in front of you.
Her small hand wrapped around your third leg. It jerked in her hand at her touch which she smirked at. She placed small kisses up and down your shaft until she got to the tip. Her tongue circled around it, her eyes never leaving yours. You lick your lips as she takes you into her mouth.
Your eyes rolled into the back of your head. Your head fell back against the cushions and your right hand tangle themselves in her hair.
One hand at the base of your shaft and the other rested on your thigh. Jenna started to bob her head up and down. Her muffled moans sending vibrations against your member which made you hiss.
“Damn girl” You hissed and licked your lips. You pushed her head down farther. You were deep in her throat, tears were pooling in her eyes. Jenna then took you fully in her mouth, her nose was touching your pelvic area. Your eyes slightly widened, you can feel her uvula grazing across you. She stayed there for a second, flexing her throat until it got hard to breathe and she pulled you out of her mouth. Her hand continuing to pump your length.
Once she got her breath back, she swallowed you while again. You grabbed a fistful of her hair and helped her bob her head up and down at a fast pace.
You were close, the knot in your stomach started to tighten.
“Fuck Jenna” You moaned.
Her nails dug into your thigh, enjoying the way your tip abused the back of her throat. You start to pant as you got closer and closer. Before you knew it, you halted her head before you felt your length twitch as it emptied into her mouth.
You relaxed into the couch, sweat glistening on your face. Jenna milked you for every last drop before she pulled you out of her mouth. She showed you the thick substance in her mouth before closing it and swallowing.
“Me gusta esa mierda extraña (I like that freaky shit)” You spoke.
“You know even though it’s sexy. It’s not fair when you speak Spanish knowing I have no clue what you’re saying” Jenna pouted.
“Chupa para chuparte fraude (Sucks to suck you fraud)” You shrugged with a chuckle.
Jenna sucks her teeth before standing up. She goes to walk away but you grab her hand.
“I’m joking. I’ll teach you Spanish if you want me too” You said. She stood in front of you. You pulled her down and interlocked your lips again. This kiss you guys took it slow, building the mood again, even though it technically never left. You pulled her pants down her legs until she kicked them off somewhere.
You stood up and hoisted Jenna up. She wrapped her legs around your waist. You walked until her back made contact with the wall in your bedroom. Your fingers pulled her underwear to the side and you ran your middle finger through her folds.
Damn, she was mad wet. She got that WAP.
Your middle finger massaged her clit. A whine left her lips as you flicked her clit and her hand gripped the back of your neck.
“Jah…” She moaned.
Unbeknownst to you, she was close to the edge. Usually, she lasts a lot longer than this. You barely touched her and she was already close to the edge. This pregnancy was making everything heightened.
You pull her from the wall and lay her on the bed. You were on your knees to the side of you, you took her underwear off before you slipped your middle and ring finger inside her.
“Fuck!” Jenna gasped.
Your long fingers worked their magic, quickly finding the rough spongy spot inside her. A loud moan ripped through her as she arched her back. Her hands gripping the bed sheets tightly.
“I’m…about to cu-” Jenna choked on her words as a powerful orgasm ripped through her. She stilled with her back arched to sky and eyes squeezed shut. There was a pool under her and your hand was soaked to the max.
You were slightly surprised at how fast she came. You didn’t complain though.
“Holy shit, that was intense” Jenna swallowed harshly. She relaxed her body on your bed, her chest was still rising and falling rapidly.
“I’m good at what I do” You smirked.
Exhaustion creeped in and Jenna struggled to keep her eyes open.
“No way I just fingered you to sleep” You laughed.
“Shut up” Jenna mumbled sleepily.
You chuckled as you grabbed some boxers from your drawer and pulled them on. You grab an old T-shirt from your drawer.
“Here put this on” You said and handed her the T-shirt. Jenna lazily put it on while you changed the blanket on your bed. Jenna crawled into your soft queen sized bed and curled up in your blanket.
You locked up your place and put the blanket and her clothes in the wash. Before going back to your room to see Jenna fast asleep. You climbed in the bed and stared up at the ceiling. As soon as you closed your eyes, you felt Jenna scoot closer to you. You turned your head towards her to see her grabbing your hand. You placed your hand in hers and she placed it on her stomach. You turned your body to her, spooning her. She relaxed into your hold and fell back asleep. You soon followed with a big smile on your face.
🤰🏻🩵
It was the next morning, you and Jenna were currently at the obstetrician's office waiting for the doctor to return to do the physical exam. The two of you got to know Dr. Nightngale better and vice versa. Her daughter was a fan of Jenna's which didn't bother or surprise the girl.
When it came down to asking questions about the other parent, Dr. Nightingale was stunned to learn that you were. Questions were thrown at you, which didn't bother you. You were used to people asking questions about being intersex. You were asked questions about it from the minute you could speak full sentences.
When you were younger, you used to go into full details but they got boring real quick. So you opted to tell people a quick summary. Which was 'I was an experiment from Area 51. My father was a spy that fell in love with an alien'. Most people didn't find it funny.
“What to expect when expecting?” You read aloud. It was a pamphlet that you picked up from the front desk. All morning you were reading up on anything related to pregnancy. You wanted to at least have a little bit of knowledge of what’s happening. Plus, it was kinda interesting learning about everything.
“Holy shit” You gasped as you were instantly hit with the sight of a stretched-out vagina…not the kind of stretched you want.
You look at the pamphlet with a disgusted look and then over to Jenna. The girl looking at you with an amused expression.
“I’m so sorry” You apologize to the girl.
A knock on the door was heard and Dr. Nightingale came in.
“Alright, Ms. Ortega and Ms. Jimenez are you guys ready to see your little bundle of joy," Dr. Nightingale asked.
Jenna was laid back in the exam chair with a sheet covering her breasts. Her slightly protruding belly was out in the open. You got up to stand next Jenna and also see the screen. You felt a shaking hand grab yours.
"You okay?" You asked the shaking girl.
"I'm nervous. I'm finally realizing how real this is" Jenna gulped.
"It's normal to be nervous. But I'm right here." You reassured the girl. She gave you a smile and a quick squeeze of your hand. Dr. Nightingale smiled at the interaction between the two of you. She put the gel on the medical instrument.
"Okay, this is going to be cold." Dr. Nightingale warned. She put the instrument on Jenna's belly, who flinched slightly at the sudden coldness of the gel. She moved the instrument around a little before a little body appears on the screen. The room was then filled with a rhythmic thumping.
"Oh my god" Jenna gasped at the screen. Her eyes started to fill up with tears at the sight. You, on the other hand, couldn't stop looking at the screen. You had a huge smile on your face.
"Your baby has a strong heartbeat. You are about 11 weeks pregnant. 2 months almost 3 if you like to go by months. Judging by the date of conception, you are due to give birth on November 28. But there's also a possibility that you could give birth in December" Dr. Nightingale said. She starts to take pictures of the baby.
“A Sagittarius baby…oh lord” Jenna joked.
“Better than a Scorpio” You shrugged.
Dr. Nightingale continued the exam. Everything coming up clear for both the baby and Jenna which you were happy about.
“When are we able to know the gender?” Jenna asked.
“By 14 weeks but I like to do it around 19-20 week mark so it can be accurate” Dr. Nightingale asked.
“What about sex?” You impulsively asked.
“Jah” Jenna sighed and rolled her eyes.
“What? It’s a smart question to ask” You defended.
Dr. Nightingale laughed, “One of the most common questions we get. Sex is completely fine to continue doing. It’s actually beneficial, it can ease discomfort or pain, great for physical health, and a good partner bonding experience. But I would highly recommend still using condoms because STI/STDs are still a thing.”
You smirked and nodded at the response. Jenna just smack your arm as she rolled her eyes.
“Any more questions?” Dr. Nightingale asked.
The both of you shook your heads no.
“Okay, well that is it for today. I’ll see you guys next month. Congratulations to you both” The older woman smiled and left the room. You helped Jenna wipe the gel off her stomach and she puts her shirt back on.
“You know…last night I said something to you. We were kind of busy so I don’t know if you heard me” You said.
“What did you say?” Jenna asked.
“I said we should talk about this. You know…us” You gestured to the two of you.
“What’s there to talk about? We’re just two people who had sex and are now having a baby together.” Jenna shrugged.
You furrowed your face, “Is that how you see us? Just two people having a baby?”
“Not just two complete strangers. Like friends” Jenna said. She watched you as you stared at her with no emotion on your face.
“Friends” You muttered and nodded.
Not gonna lie, the statement hurt you. You didn’t want to be just friends with her. You wanted to be more. You liked her and you thought she liked you too but you guess wrong. You respected her decision though despite the mental pain it brought you.
Just friends…

Would it be too much of a cliche to ask for a monster au with Commander Wolffe being a werewolf, and him finding out a monster hunter took his human s/o to lure him into a trap.
Sins Of The Father
Summary: You are the daughter of the nation's most well known, and least well respected, monster hunter. When you and your twin brother were children, the pair of you, and your mother, were attacked by a werewolf who wanted revenge on your father. Your mother died in the attack, your brother was turned, and you survived unscathed. Your father threw your brother in a cage, buried your mother, and you were left on your own…until you ran away from home at 18 and vowed to never return. And then you met Wolffe, a werewolf, and fell in love with him. And then your father found out.
Pairing: Commander Wolffe x F!Reader
Word Count: 2265
Warnings: Mentions of torture
Prompt: Monster AU
Tagging: @trixie2023 @n0vqni @imabeautifulbutterfly
A/N: So I don't think I followed the prompt to the letter, but I had an idea and I ran with it. I hope you like it!
“Are you listening?” You lift your gaze from your heavily bandaged hands, to stare at your father, your lips turned down into a dark scowl. “Don’t you look at me like that, I am your father, and you will respect me.”
“Or what?” You bite out, “You’ll break my hands…oh, wait-”
He roughly grabs your chin, roughly enough that you can feel the bruises forming on your already badly bruised skin, though you just grind your teeth and glare at him.
Your father gives in first, throwing you against the concrete wall behind you and turning away from you, “As if it’s not bad enough that you’re whoring yourself out to a wolf-”
“He’s a man, you’re just a bigot.” You bite out as you painfully rub your jaw.
“Shut up!” He rounds on you, “You…you’ve whored yourself to a wolf. Your brother is a wolf. Your mother would be ashamed-”
You surge to your feet, “My brother, your son, was only attacked because of you! We were punished because of your actions-” You cry out in pain as his fist slams into your cheek.
You glare up at him, and he glares right back at you. “I should slit your throat.”
“You won’t do it,” You counter, “You’re a coward. You always have been. You always will be.”
He strikes you again, and again, before he’s ripped off by his second, a timid looking man. “Sir, you can’t kill her. She’s bait, remember?”
Your father heaves for breath, “Right…right…” He turns his back on you, “Girl, take care of the cubs. Mattio…get her out of my sight.”
“Yes sir.” Mattio hoists you to your feet, and drags you out of the small cell that has been your room for the last week, and to the large building that houses the werewolf kids. “I’ll come and bring you back to your cell at the end of the day.” He says, without meeting your gaze.
You glare at him, and rip your arm out of his grasp, “I’m perfectly capable of walking on my own.” Is all you say as you walk over to the large door and wait for him to open it.
Mattio sighs, and unlocks the door, allowing you into the large house. And then he shuts the door behind you with a final sounding click.
The Cub House is home to over three dozen children between the ages of 6 and 12. All of them are werewolves. Many were plucked from their pack, some, though, were handed over to the Hunters when their parents learned that they had been turned.
Odds are, the second any of these children showed any violent tendencies when they’re transformed, they’ll be executed for being monsters. And it’ll be applauded.
Your lips twist with disgust, of course they’re going to lash out. Even young werewolves need space to run and to roam, keeping them caged won’t do anything but make the wolf angry. It is why so many packs live so far away from civilization.
There’s the sound of light footsteps, and you lift your gaze from the dirty floor to the darkened edges of the room. Golden eyes, identical in color, though so different in every other way, peer at you from behind crates and beds.
You smile and slowly, painfully, sit down on the floor, “Hello little ones,” You greet, as you wait for them to come to you. A little girl, with vibrant red hair, crawls out from under a bed and she trots over to you.
Her sharp eyes take in your heavily bandaged hands and arms, and the dark bruises covering every inch of your exposed skin, and she frowns, “You’re not like us.” It’s not a question, so you tilt your head and wait for her to continue, “Yet…they hurt you anyway. Why?”
The little girl leans in and sniffs at you, and you immediately peg her as a pack born werewolf. That is a very specific action that you’ve never seen from people who were adopted into a pack later in life.
“You smell like an Alpha.” The little girl says, “But not my packs Alpha, but you’re not like us.” Her eyes narrow suspiciously.
“I’m not,” You agree, “I am, however, the life partner of one of the Fett Alphas.”
The suspicion clears from her gaze, “Oh, you’re a mate.”
You allow her to believe that, although you and Wolffe haven’t quite gotten to the point in your relationship yet. Well, Wolffe hasn’t, at least. You’ve been there for months now, though.
The little girl sits in front of you, and the other children emerge from the shadows, some of them pressing against your sides for comfort, “Why are they hurting you if you’re not a wolf, like us?” A little boy asks as he lightly traces a burn on your arm, and then holds out his arm to show an identical burn.
“I’m bait.” You explain, and you don’t have to say anymore, as the children nod in understanding.
“You smell like the wolf in the lower levels,” One of the oldest boys says.
You start, honestly surprised, “My brother’s still alive?” You blurt, “Stars, I thought that father would have killed him ages ago-” You take a deep breath, if you had known that he was still alive, you would have returned for him ages ago.
“It’s not your fault,” The little girl sitting in front of you says as she lightly pets your knee, “The Hunter keeps him isolated, there’s no need for such guilt.”
“Perhaps you’re right,” You murmur quietly, as your eyes close. You nurse the guilt for a moment longer, and then you exhale and shove the guilt to the side to focus on the children in your care, “This is the story of the Mother and her most beloved children-” You start in a sing song voice, it’s a story you learned from the pack, and now you’ll share it with these children.
All you can do now is hope that someone will come for you, though you also hope that it won’t be Wolffe.
The last thing you want is for him to be in danger because of you.
“Calm down, vod.” Comet says quietly as he folds his arms across his chest while watching his older brother pace, impatiently, from one side of the room to the other. “We’re moving as fast as we can.”
“You think I don’t know that?” Wolffe bites out, his mismatched eyes landing on the ribbon clutched in his hands. His partner, his mate, always wears a ribbon in her hair. Always. It allows him to find her, even in a crowd of people.
Several days ago, he came to pick her up for their date, and saw that her front door had been kicked in, and her braid, ribbon included, laid in the middle of the living room.
Her home was also trashed, clothes ripped to shreds, furniture destroyed, paintings slashed-
Whoever broke into her home, whoever took her, hated her. And made sure that everyone knew it.
Wolffe grinds his teeth, and then whips his attention from the ribbon in his hand to his brother, “Tell me you found something?”
Comet sighs and shakes his head. “The boys have gone through the entire house, Wolffe. And they haven’t found anything.” He taps his arm for a moment, “Are you sure that she doesn’t have any enemies?”
“She-” Wolffe pauses, and his gaze drops to the ribbon. An old conversation, had several weeks after they started dating, comes to the forefront of his mind.
“My dad is a terrible person,” She says, her voice soft as she lightly traces his fingers with one of her own.
“He can’t be that bad,” Wolffe counters, his gaze locked on her face, “He sired you, didn’t he?”
She smiles at him, his fingers gliding across the palm of his hand, and over his wrist, “My father is a werewolf hunter, one of the less well respected ones.” She admits, “When I was a child, mother took my twin brother and I to the market, and we were attacked by an Alpha who had lost their mate to my father.”
Wolffe exhales sharply, “It wasn’t your fault.”
“No. It wasn’t. But mother still died, and my brother was turned…and I survived unscathed. I never saw my brother again after that day.” Her voice is soft and wistful, “I miss him.”
“What happened after?”
“I grew to hate him, and he grew to hate me in turn. No one was unhappy when I left.” She smiles tiredly, “I took my maternal grandmother’s maiden name as my own, and have tried to put it behind me.”
Wolffe’s hand comes out to cup her cheek, “If it’s in the past, then you needn’t tell me.”
She hums softly, and presses her hand over his, “If something happens to me, Wolffe, I need you to know that it was my father who did it.” Her thumb, soft and warm, brushes against the back of his hand, “He’ll never forgive me for dating you. Never.”
Wolffe’s gaze is serious as he leans in so his lips are hovering just over hers, “I’ll never let anyone hurt you-”
Wolffe is pulled from his memory at the feeling of Comet’s hand on his forearm, “Vod?”
“Her father,” Wolffe says, “He’s a hunter. You need to look into her father.”
Comet pauses, and then he smirks, “I can work with that.” He agrees, “You have a name?”
Wolffe smirks at him, “Of course I do.”
It’s the break that the pack has been waiting for. Once Wolffe gives his brothers a name, they get a location of the hunting camp. It’s not terribly close to Fett territory, which is reassuring, but it is a lot bigger than anyone was anticipating.
Wolffe keeps his gaze locked on the camp, his jaw clenched and his hands curling and uncurling into tight fists. He can smell her. Her scent is strong. Too strong. The kind of strong that only comes with pain and suffering.
She’s probably still alive though.
He can hear his brothers bickering behind him, Cody and Fox’s packs are here as well, but it sounds like they have a basic plan in place. “I’m going to get her.” Wolffe says, interrupting his twin, “She’s suffering and in pain and I’m going to get here.”
“That’s why we’re here, vod.” Fox says, “But we need to be smart about this.”
“You be smart about it. I’m going. Now.”
Cody and Fox share a look, and then nod. “Fine. Go, we’ll be on your heels.”
The actual infiltration is a haze. Wolffe doesn’t remember how he managed to navigate the camp and make it to the small building where his mate is being kept without getting caught, and in the end it doesn’t matter. Because he climbs in the window and she’s there.
“Cyare,” Wolffe goes to say something else, I love you. I missed you. Are you hurt? How can I help? But he says none of them. Instead he walks over to her, and cups her face between his gentle hands, “I’m sorry I’m late.”
Her hands come up to press against his cheeks, but Wolffe carefully catches her wrists to look at her shaking hands. Her fingers are bent awkwardly, and there are bruises peeking out from under the dirty bandages.
“Cyare?”
“Broken,” She whispers, “He…father was…he’s not happy about you.”
“I’m so sorry, I should have protected you-”
“I’m the one who refused to move in with you,” she rasps out, “It’s my fault.”
“No, it’s his fault.”
She pauses and then nods once, accepting his words as a truth, and then she shifts to her knees, “Wolffe, there’s a small house not far from here where there are children being held and-”
“Shh, shh.” He bumps his forehead against hers, “It’s okay. Cody and Fox are here with me. They’ll take care of it.”
“My brother is here.” She says, “He’s here and he’s alive and you can’t leave him, Wolffe. You can’t-”
“Never. I would never. You’re my mate, which makes him family.”
She blinks at him, and there are tears in her eyes, “I am?”
“This isn’t exactly how I planned on asking you,” Wolffe admits, “I was going to take you out on the full moon so you could be there for my transformation and…” He sighs, “I had a plan, cyare.” He clicks his tongue, “Another crime to lay at your father’s feet.”
She watches him for a moment, and then lightly grips his shoulders, “Wolffe, I want to go home, please?”
“Of course, cyare. Let’s get you to the medic. And then I’m going to rip your father to shreds.”
He expects her to argue against it, for her to ask him not to, to offer mercy. But something icy slides through her gaze and she nods once. “Good.”
And Wolffe has never been more in love with her than in that moment as he leans in and kisses her gently enough to not hurt her, and then he pulls back to help her to her feet.
He knows that it’s going to be a bloody night. But he already has his mate’s permission for what’s about to happen. He’ll make sure that the massacre will be clean and quick, so he can get her home, so he can wrap himself around her and tend to her hurts to the best of his ability.
But for now, he has a battle to prepare for…and a mate to escort.

Do-Over | Johnny Suh
Summary: You give your kid’s deadbeat dad Johnny one last chance to step up. A snowstorm puts him in danger of letting you down yet again.
Genre: Baby daddy!Johnny, ex boyfriend!Johnny, angsty
Word Count: 1.2k
Johnny laughed at his reflection in the rear-view mirror. In his homemade costume, he looked like a turnip.
He was determined to go all the way for yours and his daughter Rakha’s play. He would make awful jokes, he would hold little Rakha on his shoulders, he would point her out to the other parents and say, That one’s mine!
He was ready to finally step up and be a father to his kid.
The bouquet of long-stemmed red roses for you was a bit much, he now realised. They were the floral equivalent of a confession of love. Maybe he should leave those in the car.
Thick snow piled up over everything. The world looked a day old.
The dash on his bust-up Ford Fiesta said 5:40pm. He might just make it to Rakha’s end-of-term play in time…
Then he turned a corner, and cursed. He had just hit a mile-long stretch of road where the snow had not been shovelled. The land ahead of him was as blank and lonely as a piece of paper.
There was no way to get through.
He whipped out his phone and tried to call you, but there was no signal.
He let his forehead fall forward in frustration.
He would never forget his last conversation with you.
“Just one more chance. Please.” he had begged, trailing you as you strode to your car. You strapped Rakha in the backseat without looking at him, then got in the front.
He held the car door open so you couldn’t shut him out.
You looked coldly up at him. “She barely recognises you, Johnny.”
“I’ll be at the next recital. On time. Early – early, in fact.”
When he saw that glint of steel in your eyes, he remembered why he had fallen in love with you. Your words cut like razors, but even as it ached, he loved you for it.
“Go get some sleep, Johnny,” you said. Your nose curled. “And a shower.”
You tried to close the door, but he stopped you one last time.
“Y/n” Johnny said quietly. “When will I see you again?”
You let out a shaky breath. “Fine. She has an end-of-term play. But if you don’t make it to this one… I don’t want to hear from you again.”
--
You stood at the back of the tiny church, glancing at the clock. You kept picturing Johnny thundering through the doors, blurting out apologies in his bull-in-a-china-shop way.
But he was nowhere to be seen.
You still worried about Johnny. You would never tell anyone this, but it was true.
Every night, you would get up at around midnight, leave the bed without waking your new boyfriend Mark, and walk out onto your tiny balcony. Standing there, you would silently ask the universe where Johnny was. If he was still living in his parents’ basement. If he was eating alright.
If he still thought about you.
Then you would go back to bed, without ever telling a soul what you had done.
The curtains opened for the play, and you applauded with all the other parents. You watched Rakha’s little face fall when she realised Johnny wasn’t with you.
That was when you realised. Just like Rakha, you had still secretly believed that Johnny would show up.
Of course, he’d forgotten.
You felt like an idiot.
--
Johnny felt a fire burn in his belly, despite the freezing air in the car.
He would get to that recital if it killed him.
It was a blizzard now, but he was only about twenty minutes’ walk from the church.
He pushed his way out of the car and started the slow trek, using an old map to shield his head. The wind howled in his ears. Each flake of snow was a tiny blade.
He couldn’t feel his fingers, but he was determined to keep going. It wasn’t just his baby girl he was fighting for.
It was you.
--
“You know what my husband Mr Giant likes best? Little girls on toast,” a girl in Rakha’s class shouted. “Quick, Jackie, hide!”
Rakha, who was playing Jackie in Jackie and the Beanstalk, jumped behind a cardboard cut-out of a pot.
There was silence.
That was when you realised your mistake. Unable to resist Johnny’s pleading, you’d let him play the Giant in the school play. It was a tradition that one parent would take part in the play with the children.
Rakha’s face started to turn red. Her eyes flicked to the door and back. The sight was torture for you.
You were rigid in your seat. Should you jump up and be the Giant?
Suddenly, the double doors at the back of the church slammed open. Everyone turned around.
A six-foot tall, monstrous figure limped into the room. It was shaking, and covered with snow and mud.
Its voice thundered through the room. “FEE-FI-FO-FUM! I smell the blood of an Englishwoman!”
All the kids squealed with joy. Even the teachers were laughing.
You were the only one not smiling.
Johnny’s half-hearted attempts at parenting were almost more painful than if he just disappeared. They made you hope. And hope was a road that led nowhere.
When the play was over, Johnny lifted Rakha up onto his shoulders. She proceeded to pull his ears and try to control his movements like a puppet.
When Johnny saw the look on your face, he put her down.
Your arms were crossed. “The play started at six, Johnny. Not six forty-five.”
Johnny explained everything about the snowstorm, and how he had to abandon his car.
You didn’t want to believe him, but you had to admit he was telling the truth. And… it was a little sweet how he’d learned all his lines.
Johnny smiled.
“What is it?” you said.
“I just realised how I remember this church.”
He walked into a dusty music room filled with old pianos and organs.
He turned to face you. “Have you really forgotten? My 18th…”
You chuckled, your face heating. “Oh my god. Was it really this room?”
Johnny pretended to lay himself seductively over a grand piano. “My very first time.”
“Shut up,” you said, grinning. Then you saw that he was serious. “I was your first?”
Johnny came close and placed his hands on your waist. You placed yours on his shoulders, just as you used to do.
Johnny leaned slowly down and kissed you. His lips were unbearably sweet.
“Why are you doing this?” you asked quietly, though you already knew the answer.
“I want to try it for real,” Johnny said. “I want us to be a family.”
You wished you could be like your daughter Rakha. You wished you could love Johnny effortlessly, for love’s sake. Without having to remember all the times he had let you down.
It wouldn’t be that easy. You were a parent now.
But then, why it felt so natural so be in Johnny’s arms, despite the years you had spent apart. Johnny was your home. It was as simple as that.
“How about… we start with the Easter fair, and we can take it from there?”
Johnny was about to protest, but you put a finger to his lips.
You grinned. “Just to warn you… that costume of yours did not exactly hold up in the rain. You might want to put that jacket back on before somebody calls the police.”
Smirking, you walked away, leaving Johnny in that little hall.
They say you cannot choose your family. You could not choose whether or not to love Johnny.
You would always love him.
It was as simple as that.

I played and finished Slay the Princess last night while I was puppy sitting. I had such a great time. She’s my scary wife now.
Spoilers + more detailed thoughts below the cut, but without spoilers:
[points at devs] haha horror podcast fans
I’ve always loved Nicole Goodnight from her first appearances on Nosleep. she did so excellent as the Princess.
Very impressive scope, even with the very definitive ending I got, I came away from the game feeling like there were still paths I hadn’t seen.
Just as a general tone setter, I love the opening card/disclaimer that ends with “This Is A Love Story.”
GREAT visual style and art. I’ll get into this in my breakdown below, but with my amateur eye I love how they took a non-traditional approach to way the images/characters are displayed in a renpy game
INCREDIBLE music.
Hard to avoid Disco Elysium comparisons with the aspects of the Self mechanic, which I’m sure is either a received as a high compliment or is a source of annoyance for the devs, lol
Highly recommend it for OELVN fans, horror fans, and lesbians.
First and foremost, I’m genuinely very impressed at the amount of variety to the paths.
On my first playthrough, I got on a loop where I kept the princess locked up, and then she came upstairs and killed me. The next loop, The Paranoid showed up, and when we went into the basement, it was all spooky and distorted. In this one, we had some great banter with The Princess before I ultimately decided to slay her, and trapped me in the basement by warping reality and removing the stairs, forcing me to kill myself to escape that loop. The Cold showed up in chapter 3, and I think that was when I tried to leave the woods.
In subsequent loops, even when choosing all the choices I made to the best of my memory, I couldn’t recreate that first loop at all. It really speaks to the scope of the game in an impressive way.
The first vessel I managed to provide was The Tower. (It was the outcome of being mauled on your first encounter with her, then perceiving her as a dominating, inevitable force.) After discovering my new objective, the endings I saw were The Prisoner (It’s the ending where you just wait for the cell to rot away around you), The Razor (GOATED route, I will be calling her ‘Knife Wife,’), The Damsel, and ended with The Adversary (devil horns), before reaching Awakening.
These are the only routes I can talk about, but I’m certain there were at least 2 I missed/didn’t get to see. It’s an EXTREMELY impressive scope, and fully voiced, to boot, so my hat is off to the devs on that front.
(The next few paragraphs are about the voice acting, if you want my story thoughts, I made a small heading for that bc my VA thoughts got a bit out of hand lol)
Voice Acting
While I’m on the subject of the game being fully voiced: Nicole’s voice acting really shines here, and it’s absolutely essential to making this game what it was. I think a version of this game without it would be very Good, but not nearly as Haunting. The sheer variety of reads on certain lines based on how you first approach the princess is incredibly impressive, as well. (Again— scope!!!)
As far as the narrator VO goes, i can’t deny that Jonathan did a great job, and with his history of being the main narrator for The Magnus Archives, he was a good fit for the tone and audience of the game. I would even posit that, even if there were other people who were considered in the early phases of development, the cross-promotional potential of drawing in even a small section of an audience already primed for cosmic, reality-altering horror via TMA was a very smart business decision, and I applaud them for it. That being said, I think one unintended side effect of his casting may be that people familiar with his TMA character (a…semi-reliable narrator) might immediately come in primed with doubts about the Narrator. They seem to have anticipated this, though, and included skeptical and suspicious dialogue choices with him right off the bat in the first chapter, which is fun.
(A brief aside: If it seems like I am being very measured with my thoughts on the Narrator, it is not because I have anything negative to say about his performance. I am being measured simply because the narrative devices the game employs makes it impossible to not draw comparisons to Big Hitters like The Stanley Parable and Disco Elysium— both incredible games that I personally would be both delighted and terrified to be brought up when discussing a game I created or a role I was playing.
These games did not Create the idea of “a narrator you interact with and who is sometimes rude to you” or “multiple voices with distinct Traits butting in on your current predicament,” but both games are incredibly prolific in how implemented those devices and the vocal performances involved….so it is not a fair comparison.)
Story Thoughts
The subtitle for this section could also be “Faron ranks how hot they find all of the versions of The Princess.” jk.
I am not going to do summaries here I’m just going to assume most people reading this have played the game.
But let’s start again with the sentence at the beginning of the game: “This is a love story.”
Not long ago, there was a big discussion on tumblr about the statement that horror is “about love”, (it might have even been spurred on by TMA, lol) and that lead to a lot of justified (but not always kind) posts from my fellow horror fans being annoyed by that take. I’ll spare you a rehash of all of that. But it is exactly Because of that discourse (and my general gothic preferences) that I like the choice to open with this a whole lot. The phrase “This is a love story,” written in bold, at the end of a disclaimer saying ‘there are no wrong choices, just different paths,’ has an immense power to it. It is a mic drop way to open up a story, as a way to prime the audience to be open to the Princess as more than a monster, and creates the anticipation for a greater relationship to be uncovered between the protagonist and the princess.
It could also be that the phrase hit my brain in a weird way because of Fata Morgana. I don’t think The House in Fata Morgana had a similar line in the actual game— but my roommate who handed me Fata Morgana very specifically told me, “it is a horror game, and it is a tragedy, but at its core, It Is a Love Story.” And that’s always stuck with me. (I digress.)
A Brief Address to Loops and the Popularity of the Looping Narrative
I could sit here all day and talk to you guys about looping metanarrative structure and the different approaches to it, but you’ve probably all played a VN with that before. (If you haven’t, and this is your first time encountering something like this and it blew your mind…Go play Zero Escape: 999. Run, don’t walk.)
I believe very strongly that reviews should be about what a game Is, and how well it accomplished what it aims to be, not about what you wish the game was. But it is an even stronger opinion of mine that loop narratives, especially in visual novels, can sometimes get too bogged down in the details of “why am i in a time loop.”
I am extremely glad that this game (mostly) avoided this, bc it offers an opportunity to say something about the subgenre as a whole.
At the end of the day, looping narratives mainly exist as a metanarrative device in VNs to acknowledge and offer a reason why your character’s behavior (and/or your choices) change. It’s an easy way to create ludonarrative harmony, and to inject some extra drama with little extra effort.
But BECAUSE it’s easy, it can also feel Extremely Overused, and starts to become an expectation.
I won’t go on a soapbox about it, especially because I feel like this game handled it very well, and the looping, metanarrative aspect is suited to the themes and character subject matter of Beings Who Are Concepts, even if they Why doesn’t really satisfy. At the end of the day, this is a love story, and the why matters less than the feelings involved.
Specific Path Thoughts
All versions of the Princess are incredibly strong concepts, and the game is structured in a way that I very much would enjoy seeing how different people’s first loops influence their opinions on her. It’s got IMMENSE “streamability” in that regard.
Someone that encountered The Damsel version of the princess first would have an INCREDIBLY different experience than someone who encountered the Adversary first, which ties very neatly into the subject of the greater love story and can also generate some great post-play discussion.
I think, undoubtedly, the Aspects of the princess that made the biggest impressions on me were The Adversary (demon wife) and The Razor (Knife Wife). Part of this is due to the sheer length of their paths, as both of them take 3+ loops (correct me if I’m wrong) to reach the conclusion of their sections, whereas The Damsel, The Tower, and The Prisoner all only took 2. (See the next section for more on that). Thinking about it, every path was similar in the amount of sheer resources created for them (illustrations, animation), but these two create the illusion of having more than the others simply due to being the longest action sequences and loops in the game.
The Razor has an OUTSTANDING design, and the sequence to slay her would have been an incredible finale in its own right, as we get introduced to EVERY Aspect of ourselves as we die over and over again, even shoving the narrator out of the way so we can just jump to the cabin and fight her again, and the PC reasoning that “if there’s enough of Me, I might be able to overcome her”. For this reason, and because of the big knife skeleton body, I think that the Razor path is more Fun than the Adversary’s.
Flavor-wise, however, I feel like The Adversary is a much stronger character and narrative thread. A princess who doesn’t want to escape— she just wants a good fight. She wants you at your best, and she won’t have any less. That’s exactly the sort of character dynamic that really gets me going. I love single-minded women, and I love a main character who meets them on their level of crazy.
Both of these paths involve the Aspects of Self “The Hunted” and “The Stubborn,” and they are the aspects of the PC that by FAR have the most color to them (besides the lover, who is more of a buffoon.) I think they were my favorites.
That being said, I adored how exhausted the Narrator got during the Damsel path, and I thought there was a very quiet, profound power in the Prisoner version of the Princess. She had an austere, quiet pride to her, tinged with an undeniable sorrow.
I really do appreciate the variety of ways they provide for one to approach your dialogues with the Shifting Mound after every loop. They really create a lot of space for the player to decide how they feel about her. Even if it sort of bothered me that every time there was a choice to tell her you would slay her once it was all over, I appreciate the option being there. (And, again- the sheer amount of dialogue!! Sheesh!)
Lastly, the finale. It was incredible, going through all of the forms, reliving all of the choices you made. But this is the part that the amount of options started to detract from my experience.
Again- I love that they left a lot of space for people to decide how they feel. I like the amount of responses provided, and I get the impression they don’t change the final choice in any way, just the dialogue she says to get to it.
But it bothered me that there was an option to just…opt out of seeing every vessel, either by submitting to her or by killing her. I can’t see a world where anyone playing a finale like this would WANT to cut the big final movement short. It seems silly.
The payoff was worth it, though. It was a beautiful end and one that definitely will stick with me.
(And Obviously I decided to take her hand and remain endless with her! How could I not!)
Mechanical Musings
Note: I am a dabbler in Ren’Py, but I have been a dabbler for over a decade, and I went to college for game design. (You’re allowed to laugh) I’m not GOOD at programming, and I forget the class names for basically everything unless I’m looking at it.
All of this is all to say I am PURELY speculating on how certain parts of the game were accomplished.
UI/Display/Visuals
The choice to omit a typical text box was an objectively correct one for this game, in no small part to how they decided to do the visuals on this game. It kept the game looking clean and drew the eye to the stunning visuals. The right aligned prompt box similarly aided in that respect, and I think that being forced to scroll down to resist during certain tense sequences was a great touch. Makes me wonder if there’s a timed element on those responses.
The choice to eschew using typical talk sprites (outside of The Long Quiet scenes, the sequence with The Damsel, i thiiiiink the confrontation in the basement maze, and the finale) in favor of using scenes/displayed images really aided in the storybook vibes, and the animated loops they had on those images gave the pencil work an amazing kinetic energy for the scenes where the princess is just standing or sitting still. (For the uninitiated- It’s incredibly simple to program animation loops using static images in RPY, but I’m not clear if that the most memory-efficient way to do so; I’m going to assume they did this though)
The menu Ui is what gives it away as Renpy to me, but you know, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, lol.
I’m sort of surprised there wasn’t anything like a scene viewer or gallery that unlocked at the end, but I guess that might sort of be immersion breaking.
Gameplay
Just from my hobbyist eye, I can tell there’s a looooott of dialogue flags in this one, where they track previous things you’ve said in the scene. There is absolutely a variable for “Princess hostility,” just based on the fact there’s several like reads of her answering the questions you can ask in chapter one, but since I only did a single run where I didn’t pick up the knife in chapter 1, I can’t be sure if it’s points based or binary “has knife = true.”
My guessssss about how the Aspects are inherited is that it might be a point based system combined with a flag indicating how you died; this would explain how I inherited “the paranoid” in ch2 my first run, but never after that.
I can say with almost complete certainty from the way it completely locked me out of deciding to leave the princess locked up after my choice to leave the woods that there is a true/false variable tracker for each path that stores if you’ve reached the Long Quiet or not, bc no matter what I did I could NOT do that again. Either that or there’s a flag where the narrator will lock you downstairs after seeing that screen once.
There’s also probably some variables tied to your appearance changing in the mirror, but i would need to double check achievements to be sure that text isn’t just set to appear after X vessels being provided.
There’s also a distinct possibility there are different “pools” for the princess’ aspects to be pulled from after each “level” of ascension; this would set it up so that it’s impossible for you to end with an event that is only 1 loop long, and it would be easier to assure story pacing that way.
(Ex: “If Vessels < 2, use Event_Pool_A, Else use Event_Pool_B”, where pool A contains vessels that use less than 2 loops to complete)
All in all, if I ever got the chance to crack the hood open on this, I would. I highly recommend it.

oh dear, here's some lyrics for a vaggie country song about falling for lucifer's daughter oops~
I’m sinner down in hell a wingless angel who never fell ‘till the devil’s daughter so softly took my hand
Lived my life ‘till twenty five last year on earth I was alive I died and woke there at the pearly gates
The angels smiled and grabbed at me applauding at my destiny to have found my way- somehow- up there with them
One angel stood up from the rest with golden wings and puffed out chest said the first original man on earth was he
He whispered “I’ve a job for you a special one, just for the few!” he looked me up and down and said “You’ll do”
They gave me armor that fit too tight gave me a blade, told me to fight and earn the spot in heaven I don't deserve
They showed me how to use a spear told me to fly down once a year to cull the rising tide so deep in hell
With tarnished halo on my head I killed those souls already dead on ashen wings, by the hundreds, struck them down
Then there among the demons wild impossibly, I saw a child- crying as he cringed from me in fear
I couldn’t strike, he was so young I let him go, I told him run and turned as a shadow fell from above
A blade cut my own left eye free as the angels tore my wings from me and left me, saying “there’s no place for you up there.”
I threw away all that they’d gave with hell itself as my self-dug grave in an alleyway, awaiting for judgment’s call
Now here’s the part that’s hard to tell of how the princess, herself of hell found me, and gently bound up my wounds
Her taloned hands were soft and kind she knelt in filth, didn’t seem to mind and the only flame burning in her eyes was care
I caught a glimpse beyond divine as her brimstone breath mixed with mine without a word, I swore my soul to her
But of all the things for her I’ll do be her friend, her lover, and her armor too- one thing I cannot give is the truth
She's sure there’s a second chance found in even the darkest soul of sin if only someone gave to them a hand
So how could I ever explain how many souls of them I've slain and all the chances that I took away
She’s all I have, she’s all I need I fell to Pride- I belong in Greed- more than salvation, all I want is her
So I’ll keep quiet and tell half lies and burn in the fires of her eyes every time she shares her sweetest smiles with me
If that’s the price I have to pay then here in my own hell I’ll stay standing ever always by her side
Oh Charlie, if someday you know if you look at me and tell me go I’ll reach for you a last time before I do
Betrayal is the word for this faithless lover with every kiss in every night you held me as I cried
This sorry song will have it’s end only so far the truth can bend and when it breaks, I know that we will too
I lived my life ‘till twenty five last year on earth I was alive I died and woke there at the pearly gates

Character Spotlight: Kira Nerys
By Ames
We’re moving on in our character spotlight series from our favorite war criminal captain to one of the most well developed characters from the onset, Colonel Kira Nerys. From the moment we meet her in “Emissary,” we know exactly who Kira is, and the show wisely sends her on a complex journey within that grey area between terrorist and resistance fighter. Get you a Bajoran who can do both.
Ensign Ro may have set the mold for the Bajorans, but Kira grew outside of it and we’re so glad to get her perspective. So pick up your Bajoran phaser and get ready to take aim at some fascists as we celebrate A Star to Steer Her By’s favorite crinkly-nosed, red jumpsuit-clad militia officer in our Best and Worst Moments list below and on this week’s podcast (jump to 56:47). Walk with the Prophets, my child.

Best moments
What other show gives you a zombie space pope? There’s more going on for Kira in season one than for other characters because she really rocks it from the start. And Nana Visitor has the chops to give that special nuance to a character like this, especially in emotional scenes like her breakdown when she accidentally gets Kai Opaka killed in “Battle Lines,” and the moment she has with her reanimated corpse is nothing short of stunning.
If I leave here, I’ll die Speaking of great moments from season one, Kira makes the hard decision in “Progress” to save Mullibok’s life by ruining said life. Over the episode, she bonds with the obstinate Jeraddo farmer by helping him build his kiln only to destroy it in the end and set fire to his house to force him to relocate, and it’s clear it tears her up inside. Bajorans really never win.
Enough good people have already died. I won’t help kill another. But perhaps the best thing to come out of the season (and to some, the whole show overall) is her character arc in the stunning “Duet.” Kira spends so much of the show battling her Cardassian demons (figuratively and literally), that seeing her grow to accept that some individuals may be redeemable is captivating, heart-breaking, and truly impressive (and have we mentioned it’s only season one?).
A new meaning to being selfish We would be remiss if we didn’t include at least a mention of the excellent and mesmerizing performance Visitor gives as Intendant Kira in episodes like “Crossover.” Say what you will about the mirror universe (and we have), but Kira is a wonder to behold and the chemistry between her and herself is like lightning in a bottle. Zap!
Cardassians LOVE cosmetic surgery Speaking of mirrors, imagine waking up and the face looking back at you in the mirror is the thing you hate most. Kira’s relationship with Cardassians continues to evolve in the wondrous “Second Skin,” in which she bonds with her fake daddy Tekeny Ghemor, foils a Cardassian plot, and discovers a resistance cell within Central Command – her favorite!
I was playing a married woman This is one of those cute little Kira moments from the show that tickles us, but in “The Way of the Warrior,” it is just too hilarious that her response to being wooed by Lancelot (assumably while playing Guenivere) in the holodeck is to slug him. It’s so in character that we have to applaud it. Kira is always the first to choose violence, after all, though sometimes that can be a downside.
Major, tell me another story Kira spends the second half of “Starship Down” tending to a badly concussed Sisko, and working through character conflict. As I harped on in the Sisko post, Ben is double-fisting roles as both space station commander and Emissary to the Prophets, and that comes with deep significance to Bajorans like Kira, and this is her chance to talk to him about it. Love that for her!
The life you’re choosing isn’t for her There are a ton of great moments between Kira and Ziyal, from saving her life in “Indiscretion” to encouraging her painting in “Sons and Daughters,” but the one we’re highlighting comes from “Return to Grace.” Kira sees that Ziyal is on a dangerous path if she stays with her father, and the bond they’ve established makes her advocate she move to DS9. There’s truly no safe space for the girl, but Kira does all she can.
The baby just had a change of address Thank the Prophets the show didn’t introduce yet another baby when Nana Visitor got IRL pregnant. That’d be way too many babies, so it was rather ingenious to move the O’Brien baby over to Kira in “Body Parts.” And it also highlights just how like family this crew has become. Kira really takes one for the team by agreeing to incubate Kirayoshi for Keiko. Now if only their characters talked more…
I owed it to my father to get it right this time Yet another great character-development episode for Kira comes in “Ties of Blood and Water” when she learns that Tekeny Ghemor – her fake dad and one of our favorite Cardassians! – was up to some shady stuff in his past. And while this alters the relationship between the two of them, Kira again accepts how he’s changed since then to be with him as he dies.
Romulans gotta scheme! Come season seven, the Romulans have gotten added to the mix thanks to some nefarious doings by Sisko and Garak. And Kira is left to deal with their constant scheming. Typical Romulans! Throughout “Image in the Sand” and “Shadows and Symbols,” Kira stares down Senator Cretak in a huge game of galactic chicken, and Cretak blinks first.
Don’t drink the Kool-Aid Our final great Kira moment is also the last time she ever sees Dukat. In “Covenant,” he’s leading his own little pah-wraith cult, and when the going gets tough, the tough gets really Jonestown-y. Kira literally leaps in and stops the whole assembly from ritual suicide, revealing that Dukat had a placebo pill for himself and he’d had them all charmed. Stupid sexy Dukat.

Worst moments
Maybe the ends justify the means? One of Kira’s strengths is also frequently one of her biggest faults, and that’s how very wide her ethical grey area is. She’s able to justify doing lots of pretty messed up things, like a certain captain I could name, and we see this pretty early on in “Babel” when she intentionally infects Surmak Ren with aphasia disease and holds him hostage to find a cure. That’s pretty brutal.
Bajor is not Kentanna For most of “Sanctuary,” it’s rather nice watching Kira befriending Haneek and the other Skrrean refugees. Until they express interest in immigrating to Bajor, and then Kira’s NIMBY side really comes out. It’s not a good look, Kira, especially for someone whose people were in a very similar plight until very recently. And frankly, Bajor could use the laborers.
It’s like stepping on ants, Odo Because of that wide ethical grey area, we’ve noticed that Kira is almost always the first person to advocate just killing whatever the danger of the week is, no matter the consequences. In “Playing God,” an episode about killing Cardassian voles, she’s quick to jump to the option of killing the tiny proto-universe, even when Dax expresses she’s found sentient life in it. Yikes.
The people have chosen Winn We know from “Battle Lines,” mentioned earlier, that Kira has a super soft spot for Kai Opaka, and also probably feels guilty for trapping her on zombie planet a little. But it’s just a bad idea to let Bareil take the fall for some shady doings in “The Collaborator” because it sets up Winn for the win (wow, I didn’t even try to do that) in the big kai election, lest she sully Opaka’s name.
The distant memory of a touch It would be an understatement to say Kira’s taste in men isn’t great (and that’s not even including the fascist she ends up with!). The first of her various men is Bareil, who’s fine but boring as hell. Certainly not worth forcing Julian to keep him alive against all his medical ethics in “Life Support.” But Kira’s into the vedek, so we’re forced to watch her push his existence to the edge of morality and cringe at what he’s becoming.
Do you like me? Check yes or no. Lucky for us, Bareil is a thing of the past by season four (for now), opening up the opportunity for Kira to make more bad dating decisions. While Odo weeps, she sets her sights on Shakaar in “Crossfire” and viewers at home roll our eyes at how high school the whole ordeal is. Why have these resistance cell leaders downgraded to petty relationship drama? It’s beneath them.
Kira’s edgy artist phase We’ve said it myriad times before, but Bajor is a cultural disaster. When Akorem shows up in “Accession” and declares he’s making Bajor great again by reinstating their rigid caste system, it’s clear that Kira is uncomfortable but still refuses to oppose it. This is a Sisko episode, after all. Even though she can’t sculpt worth a damn, she goes along with the d’jarras like a sheep.
A little lower While Kira is surrogating the O’Brien baby, she and Miles randomly develop feelings for each other only because of their constant proximity in “Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places.” That’s just gross and unnecessary. Nothing again Miles, but men and women are allowed to be friends without wanting to bone. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones.
The phantom of Cardassia This one always bothered me. After several seasons of growth as a character, Kira seemed to have chilled out a little in her constant desire to murder Cardassians. So when “The Darkness and the Light” introduces a blast from the past whom Kira would otherwise have at least some empathy for, it strikes me as a character regression for her to fall back on thoughtlessly killing like she used to.
Same face, different universe Kira regesses again in “Resurrection” when a new Bareil is barking up her tree. Oh mirror universe, what have we done to deserve this? Sure, mirror Bareil is at least less bland than the original recipe, but who the hell is this Kira immediately falling for a boy in less than a day? That’s just not the character (that’s Jadzia, if anyone, whom we’ll discuss next week). Kira’d kick his ass.
That’s not what your mom said last night I may have given Sisko a little bit of guff for allowing this too, but I’ve got to give Kira even more. Whose first reaction when Dukat makes a yo mama joke in “Wrongs Darker than Death or Night” is to GO BACK IN TIME to check on your mother’s sexual history??? What the hell, Kira??? Now the bigger debate is whether she should or shouldn’t have blown Dukat up. And fight.
Foul ball! Finally, I need to continue venting about “Take Me Out to the Holosuite.” Somehow, Ben held tryouts on a station full of beefy Bajorans, and still put Kira on his baseball team when she can’t even catch a ball. Kira plays springball in her spare time. She’s a resistance fighter. She was raised to have street smarts. How in the firecaves does she not know how to catch a freakin’ ball???

Praise be to the Prophets, that’s all! Keep your subspace communicator focused here for more character spotlights. We have someone who’s multiple characters in one next week when we discuss Dax! You can also go to warp five with us in our watchthrough of Enterprise over on SoundCloud or wherever you podcast, grab some hasperat with us on Facebook and Twitter, and maybe take up sculpting if it’s something you’re actually into.

I need you to know that I squawked at the cliffhanger of childe’s appearance. Lost my mind and almost threw my phone. Fingers crossed that Aether got to him before the banquet!
But to the chapter as a whole! There are?? So many things I wanna talk about? I’ll try to keep it somewhat short so I can fit it all into one ask but sienussnei-
I’m like 50 percent sure those strings pulled had something to do with the fauti. Something I remembered!! Not every person from the house of the hearth becomes one of the fauti! But they still do remain close to the group! My crack theory is that Rosalie is one of people in that latter group. Arlecchino was able to fully attempt an assassination on Furina without anyone knowing before or after( including the orphans in this as well since they don’t say thing about it as far as i know? And im absolutely positive they wouldn’t push for more info and take her at her word that she didn’t have the gnosis) and the only reason why it was a attempt and not a success is because she stopped herself! Either way though, considering her disguise used for that same attempt, I sure that the hooded figure was Father herself.
ALSO THE PINING OF THIS MAN!!! That polearm?? The sudden flip from fake to real the moment he saw Rosseland (I’m assuming that was the kitty in question) had led Thawed!Reader to him? The instant flirtations? Not to mention that despite the fact Thawed!Reader kept talking about kissing him, he refused!! Because he knew they were both drunk and not quite in their right minds to do that!!! THE MAN CARES!! It’s also a blessing and a curse rn that Thawed!Reader is kinda drunk. A blessing because she isn’t hiding her feelings as much, but a curse because she isn’t being subtle at all. The straight forward question she asked? Lyney isn’t drunk enough to forget that.
The callback to the last chapter too! She really does know lyney so well, even after all this time. He was right, she did know he was lying. And she’s just sitting there, trying to figure out what’s going on while Aether’s just sitting there like ‘you two nerds love each other.’ Not that she would admit it out loud. Yet. Also RIP reader, paimon and Rosalie are friends now, friendship forged by food. They aren’t gonna leave readers life once this is over and done. Say goodbye to your peace and quiet! (Although lyney may complain about that but that’s a different story-)
Losing my mind also over Rosalie and Thawed!Reader’s connection. She doesn’t even realize she is calling Rosalie maman!! But Rosalie does and it’s just so soft and sweet and family and rurnfjkeis. I’ve known Rosalie for 7 chapters and if anything happens to her I will kill everyone in this room and then myself.
Great chapter as always! I’m a little sad to hear regular updates are potentially stopping for a bit but I fully understand! Best of luck with school!!
-Deadman Aether Anon
deadman aether anon i wish you couldve seen my face when i saw your ask i literally lit up. and im sure that the other readers have been waiting for your thoughts as well, based on the tags of reblogs i read (“cant wait for deadman aether anon's insight now”)
HAHA i talked about this w my friend but i wanted to make childes appearance TERRIBLE. i wanted everyone to be like "FUCK. I LOVE YOU BUT NOT NOW." while childe shows up lke a celebrity in a disneyshow. it seems like it worked LMFAOO
INTERESTNG CRACK THEORY U HAVE!!!! the truth will be revealed eventually but i applaud u for how ure thinking of it. :D big brain as usual. it is also interesting to see people trying to figure out who the hooded figure was? deadman aether anon idk if u saw but there are other people guessing differently. im surprised bc i thought it was pretty obvious !!
YEAHH!! IT WAS ROSSELAND !!! i love rosseland and how lyney ended up making the cat his assistant-- that little backstory is so cute. rosseland is such a smart cat, too; writing that scene of leading mc to lyney didnt seem absurd in the slightest to me.
drunk t!reader is a mess kwdhkdfhd some drunk words are sober thoughts. and yes i think and know that lyney is a gentleman. even drunk he would always put reader first. always!
aether is so silly he came in there to blackmail someone and ended up playing secondhand matchmaker, if that makes sense LMFAOO i actually love aether and readers dynamic its so absurd when you look at it from a different perspective. its such a strange friendship they ended up making
yes ure right!!!!!1 im not sure if im portraying it well but reader calling rosalie maman is so ? subconsciously done. its like looking at a cat and going "here kitty". u look at rosalie and the way she treats reader and u go "thanks maman".
tysm for this ask!!!!!!!!! always such a delight to see you stopping by and sharing your thoughts, but i think ive said that every time by now LOL. and thank u too for the wishes T__T ill need them when i deal with chemistry <333 MUCH LOVE

Dorlily
Damn pickles, making me work up a sweat by answering all of them.
1.) What’s their love language?
Quality time for sure. It’s hard for them to spend much time together as they’re in different houses so they take advantage of every opportunity to be together.
2.) Do they have a dynamic trope?
Academic rivals, bickering married couple, “I’d die for you” x “I’ll kill for you”
3.) Who cooks? Who cleans up? Who’s banned from the kitchen?
They take turns cooking and they always clean up together. Unless one of them is stressed or tired, then the other sends them up to bed.
4.) What’s their favorite sleeping/cuddling positions?
Lily as the big spoon and Dorcas as the little spoon. Lily also likes to lay on Dorcas’ chest.
5.) Who does what chores?
Lily dusts and waters the plants, Dorcas does the laundry and vacuums because Lily refuses. They make James clean their bathroom.
6.) Do they go out often or prefer to stay indoors?
They like to stay indoors and paint or watch a movie.
7.) Who is the more romantic one?
Dorcas
8.) Do they have a favorite activities to do together?
Tending to their garden, watching tv, and shit talking people <3
9.) Baths or showers together? Do they like elaborate ones with bubbles and flower petals?
They honestly prefer to shower/bathe separately most of the time. But they’ll keep the other company while they’re in the bath.
10.) Who drives and who picks out the music?
Dorcas drives and they fight over the music (lily usually wins).
11.) What’s a song that describes their relationship? Or what’s the song that they’ve deemed “their” song?
Bad Idea by Girl in Red is a very dorlily coded song imo. They always do a dramatic rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Dolly Parton on Karaoke night so it’s kinda become the song all their friends associate them with.
12.) Who gets up the earliest? Who has the worst sleep schedule? Who is the sleepiest?
Somehow Lily, for all of these. She goes to bed at 5am and then wakes up at 8am ready to take on the day. But then she always takes a nap around 4pm.
13.) What’s their opinions on PDA?
They try to keep their relationship a secret so they’re not very fond of it. But they will sneak a quick ass grab in the hallways.
14.) Who does fashion shows after a mall trip and who watches and compliments them?
Lily does the fashion show and Dorcas watches. She makes sure to applaud every-time Lily twirls in her new skirt.
15.) Do they go on vacations together? Where is their favorite place to visit?
Not really, they usually just go to the beach.
16.) What’s their favorite “domestic bliss” moment? Do they cook/clean together? Do they like to go out shopping together?
They co-parent plants together and wash the dishes together. They’re not allowed to go shopping together because they encourage each other buy everything they look at.
17.) What does a relaxing night in look like for them?
Watching a movie and napping on the couch
18.) What does a date night out look like for them?
They go the drive in and make out in the backseat <3 (can you tell they’re a movie couple?)
19.) How do they silently/subtly express their love for each other?
Dorcas runs bathes for Lily when she’s stressed. Lily gives Dorcas massages after quidditch games.
20.) What clothes/accessories do they steal from each other?
They wear each other’s ties a lot because they like feeling like the other belongs to them. They’re also the same shoe size so they accidentally put on each other’s shoes and it’s how people end up figuring out they’re together.
21.) Which of their friends/family pokes fun at them for them getting flustered/affectionate?
Sirius and Marlene mock them all the time.
22.) How do they apologize after arguments?
They’ll make the other’s favorite food as a peace offering.
23.) Do they like pick up lines?
No. Absolutely not.
24.) What are their favorite places to kiss on their partner? What are their favorite types of kisses?
Neck kisses!!! With an affectionate nip added!!
25.) What is their dream home? Do they buy a place together? Who plans the decorations and who does the heavy lifting?
They like the idea of living in a ranch together, but they end up just living in a little cottage. They both plan the decorations and Marlene does the heavy lifting.
26.) Do they have any pets or kids?
For some reason, birds really like their windowsill and Lily always ends up feeding them. Dorcas comes home with an injured frog one day and the next morning she finds it with a mini bandana on.
27.) Who would propose? What would their wedding be like?
Lily proposes and they end up eloping.
28.) What’s something that reminds them of their partner? Do they have anything on them daily as a reminder (a photo, phone background, tattoo, clothing/accessory, etc.)?
Dorcas gives Lily her quidditch jersey. Dorcas has a lily tattoo on her collarbone and Lily has a meadow on hers.
29.) What is something they can never agree on? How do they meet in the middle?
Constantly argue over small things. Lily has no idea how to flip off light switches.
30.) Free space! Say something about this ship that you want to say!
I love them so much, I need to inject them into my bloodstream. Also they’re better than dorlene and marylily. Sorry not sorry.

An Extremely In Depth Dissection of the Cleaning Lady, Episodes 6-8
Okay, I am sure I am going to inadvertently piss someone off by saying this, but it needs to be said: in a general sense, we’ve began to confuse romance with lust and sex. And while those things are not inherently exclusive and removed from each other, they all can and do also exist without each other. Television in the past few years, particularly shows surrounding younger characters tend to use sex as a cure all. A lot of times, it is contrived plot armor that, ironically, doesn’t actually add anything to the actual plot or story. It’s just used for sensationalism, whether it makes sense or not. Perhaps I’m in the minority of people that want earned interactions between two characters, or that want the ownership of a character’s sexuality to feel authentic to the character. there are many criticisms I’ve had and will continue to have about the show, but I will also be the one loudly applauding the writers and showrunners for letting the characters be authentic and human, and not simply doing what would be sensational or exciting with no genuine reasoning behind it. (i’ll discuss more of this below the cut.)
Let me be the first to say, I hope that the show never makes a major character decision purely for fan service. Because THAT is what kills a show. Let me use of one the most famous examples: Game of Thrones. Yes, that show was sensational in every bit of meaning- but the sensationalism was never the point of the show. The political drama and danger that it created was always the focus and always meant to be at the forefront. To the point that it dictated whether characters that we loved lived or not. It was when the showrunners lost sight of this and ran out of source material that the show shifted and became something unrecognizable. They gave into fan service with bigger battles, more sex, random out of character jokes that didn’t fit the person saying them and it tarnished what was once considered one of the greatest pieces of television we’ve had.
Whether or not we like it, whether or not we agree with every choice regarding two characters and their relationship, the show is not about the romance between Thony and Arman, That is a MAJOR part of it, but the actual show is about a woman trying desperately to save her family and the impact that has on everyone that comes into contact with her. Yes, it is technically an ensemble show- but there is ONE main lead- The Cleaning Lady- Thony. And the reason this show is so good and we care so much is in large part because the writers and showrunners understand what their show is about- as do the actors. Yes, there could be improvements and I’m sure they will come. But I do think we have to be realistic about what we’re going to see and support what we do have and do like so that we don’t end up losing it. Now that I’ve said my piece on that, let’s dive in.
This is going to be different than my typical dissections of the episodes. I feel that these last three episodes have all gone hand and hand in three parts of a whole. So, I’m going to be looking at all three and breaking down moments and thoughts that particularly stood out to me.
First, I want to discuss the pacing. As many of you know, I write fanfiction on the show. In fact, this show brought me out of a years long hiatus of writing any fanfiction at all. At the time, I was inspired to write because of the myriad missing moments I felt we had in the show- specifically between Thony and Arman. Now, while I do still find that I crave certain moments or scenes to give more context- I haven’t felt a pulled to write because I’ve found myself very pleased with how the story and its pacing has unfolded this season. I was, obviously, always a fan of the show- but this season, they’ve really found their stride and seemed to have really honed onto those quieter, more delicate moments that make the characters feel more real and personal. It’s something that I greatly appreciate and wanted to make mention of it before I speak on anything else. If the show is able to maintain this pace, I genuinely believe season 3 could be their strongest and potentially garner them more support from a larger fan base.
GARRETT
To my pleasant surprise, Agent Garrett Miller has FINALLY arrived. It took a season and a half, but I can finally say that he’s a character I am becoming invested in and wouldn’t be opposed to seeing more of. Episode 8 was definitely his strongest episode, but I think that this last episode set him up for some really interesting development for the rest of the season.
I’ve said it before, but I genuinely think the biggest issue with Garrett’s character was never that he was a flawed FBI agent; rather, it was that he was so inherently rooted in his privilege on a show about people trying to make a way without privilege and protections. While it made total sense for him to not fully understand his privilege and agree with Thony’s point of view, it was a failing of his actual character’s design that he had a constant safety blanket last season, which led him to having no real consequences and coming off as extremely un-relatable. Last season, almost every personal (and professional) issue he encountered was handled within the matter of that episode. His ex wife that he cheated on didn’t want him around his son? He showed up at her house, made her laugh, and things were fine. He was supposed to be on a tight leash after his inappropriate behavior with a CI, but still did things without his superior or partner? He found some good intel, so they were able to overlook it. He gets someone deported and nearly gets Fiona deported, as well? He’s back on that “short leash,” but isn’t removed from any casework. Even him attempted smuggling of Thony across the border, his most selfless act last season, ended up impacting her more than him and he still suffered no true consequences. Not even with his boss and friend, who would’ve had every right to sever any personal relationship with him after that. There was nothing that actually made his character develop because he didn’t have to develop past the very clear safety net laid out for him. Then, this season, we met Maya- and it all changed.
I was nervous about the introduction of Maya at first; thinking that we were just going to watch him win without actually deserving the win. Again. But to my shock, that didn’t happen. While it was sad Maya’s part in the story was reduced to something so small and we didn’t get to emotionally connect with her as much, outside of the lens of Garrett’s former lover, she did end up serving a greater purpose and meaning to the show. And not just for Garrett, but also for Arman. I wouldn’t say that Maya humanized Garrett, because he already was a believable human- just not a likable one; but it did ground him. Her presence rooted his character back into a sense of reality and served as an ongoing reminder of a constant consequence for his actions. She ended up in the messy situation she was in because of choices that he was a part of; and for once, this consequence isn’t just going away. Garrett is actually being forced to think and act differently, to take accountability, and face some hard truths about himself. I don’t know if it will last, but I certainly hope that it does.
I enjoy the burgeoning friendship he has with Thony, and I think it would be increasingly interesting to see the push and pull of how he interacts with Arman in later seasons. I also really appreciated the way he was with Chris and Fiona. I don’t know that I would necessarily envision something romantic, but I would be incredibly curious to see a type of confidant relationship happen between Garrett and Fiona. It would be unexpected, but it would also have to be earned which would mean major growth for both of their characters to come to this place of mutual respect and understanding. I’m intrigued by the thought.
I also appreciate the fact that he didn’t cross the line with Maya again, at least not physically. I worried that they would take the seedlings of growth we had and destroy it by having them be incredibly intimate with one another; but in reality, while you could feel the tension (and at times desire between them) we watched Garrett exhibit something that he isn’t known for: restraint. I genuinely enjoyed spending time with this version of him and I hope that we get to see more of this side of his character- because this is the side that’s going to make him feel more imperative to the show and the other characters.
CHRIS
I am so glad that they have carved out more of this show and story for Chris, and I hope they continue to do so. I can truly see his character having such growth and a beautiful arc as we continue to watch him heal and struggle with that healing. I hope that they don’t just act like the whole Marco thing never happened, but I also want them to show us what it looks like when Chris feels like he’s regaining control of his life or actively choosing to live it. He’s so young, but so wise and he already exists as a type of anchor for the family. Fi choosing to not keep him as in the dark is something I wasn’t entirely expecting, but that I’m thrilled about- because it opens up a realm of possibilities. For example, with JD’s words last episode, one could wander if the next season of the show would explore these influences in Chris’s life. A JD/Garrett like presence vs an Arman. And while we know that Arman is a gentle giant, most don’t. And I can absolutely see Chris feeling powerful in the way Arman did by getting involved in this world. It would also serve as an interesting conflict for Thony and Fiona.
Something that really struck me with Chris is just how much he genuinely loves Thony. They don’t have enough scenes together that are just the two of him, but she is clearly like a second mother to him. I would love to see more of their individual relationship more built up as the show progresses. Not only was Thony willing to take the fall for him, but Chris was going to take the fall for her. And from the beginning, he was able to see what Fiona could (or would) not- that Marco was hurting Thony. Again, I feel that with Chris getting older and being so perceptive of everything happening around him, that we are being led to more of his inclusion into Thony’s world.
JD AND FIONA
I don’t have too much to say here, save for the fact that I enjoyed the awkwardness and juxtaposition of their scenes for Thony and Arman’s. While the latter’s were tender and intimate, the former were cozy and innocent. Incredibly sweet and safe, and felt warm compared to the coldness of what Thony and Arman were facing. It made me happy to see the fun loving Fi from older days make an appearance and to watch her feel so at home in this new space. I don’t get the heat from her and JD that I do with Thony and Arman, but I do get the comfortable warmth that makes me curious to see more. (I still am toying with the whole Fi and Garrett getting closer idea.) Fiona deserves happiness and joy, and it was just nice to see some of that “normalcy” in the midst of so much turmoil.
Now, here’s my beef with JD. He is NOT wrong. Jas does need to be kept safe and protected, they all do. And yes, Thony’s decisions (particularly concerning Arman) have cost her some of that safety they had last season. However, JD is extremely hypocritical in acting as if Thony, alone, has made some grave error in protecting her family. He’s concerned about Thony, who is actively working with the FBI; but wasn’t he complicit in keeping a secret from the FBI- himself? I just feel like he’s doing a lot of finger pointing for a man that just rolled back into town. And the suggestion that Fiona leave Thony, when it isn’t like she’s been the one truly bringing danger to their doorstep until now, makes me really disappointed in him. He had no concern for Thony, and I get it- again, he’s a Dad first. But if they are all a family, them that includes Thony. And he needs to think of her, too.
KAMDAR
I just want to say: THANK YOU WRITERS FOR LETTING NAVEEN ANDREWS DO WHAT THE FUCK HE DOES! I’ve said it from day one and I will say it again, let Naveen act and that man is going to act the house down. Robert is so terrifying and insidious and loves playing mind games, and I cannot wait to see him even more in action and wordplay next episode. He is becoming such a delicious villain.
THE THONY AND ARMAN OF IT ALL
I think right now, we probably have the most interesting opportunity to watch the development of the relationship between these two. Something that I really appreciate about them is that they feel grown. They feel mature and adult, because they are. And they make decisions that are more calculated and thought out, like an adult closer to their 40s and less like one closer to their 20s. It’s something incredibly refreshing to see on television, and something that made shows like Breaking Bad (which I’ve often said has heavily inspired the style of this show) so intriguing. Part of the reason that I’m so excited about this pacing is due to the fact that we no longer have to do as much guessing with these characters and how they feel. It’s not so much that they’re saying exactly how they feel more than before- I mean, Thony and Arman are slow walking that communication bit- but rather, we’re getting to actually see it. We’re actively getting to watch the conflict they feel about their very feelings, and I love getting to see things like that- both as an actress who studies, does, and teaches this for a living but also as a viewer who gets to watch these people reveal themselves to us. Character work is my favorite thing, and I feel so much more connected to these two, in particular, this season than I did the last.
While I’m sure to some it would’ve made sense for Thony and Arman to fall into bed by now and to say I love you, to me it makes perfect sense why they haven’t. Given the fact that the very nature of the show asks us to question what we view as strictly right or wrong, I highly doubt that the writers are afraid of Thony and Arman being perceived as cheaters. They wouldn’t have the show that they did with the subject matter that they do if they didn’t expect the audience to be more emotionally intelligent than that. We learned the very first episode that Thony feeling like things were out of her control sent her on a spiral of trying to make everything as perfect as possible to make up for it; so, why in there would she then do something that she would view as reckless when she’s trying so desperately to push out the recklessness of her life?
That’s literally the point of her and Arman. He is something that is associated with this recklessness and lack of control that she has over her life, yet his very existence contradicts this stereotype he should represent because all he’s done is try to help her regain control of her life and feel free. He’s tried to be her anchor and she ended up becoming his.
What’s kind of magical about where they are right now is that Thony has allowed herself to view her relationship with Arman as something solid and not reckless, something that took the entirety of last season for her to do. She kept pulling back and walking away from him because she knew what not doing so would mean- and it would go against what she feels that she should be. Her own moral compass. Their interactions in Mexico opened the door for her to start considering what it might mean if she did accept what she was feeling and did allow herself to find comfort and solace in someone that accepted her exactly as she was; even so, she was still hesitant and pulling away. Her focus was then and still is Luca and her family; and though she’s starting to blend the line between Arman and her family as one unit (when she was having a panic attack in his car, she said to him: “Let’s go home.” then corrected it to, “I need to get home.”), she still is Thony. The perfectionist, the surgeon, the woman who has put everything she’s ever wanted and needed on the shelf for someone else. So, when we do finally see these two being so completely intimate, and sexual, and romantic all at once- it will be because she feels safe in that choice. Thony has no reason to feel safe in that right now.
Arman is still married, even if his marriage is truly over. And he may love Thony but he isn’t ready to admit that to himself let alone to her. Admitting that would mean admitting that this life he’s trying so hard to win back from Kamdar, this world he’s given up his family for, isn’t actually making him happy. He’d have to confront Nadia’s insinuation that he’d never be fulfilled being the “hero” that Thony sees him as, and ask himself if that’s true. And if Arman is too afraid to tell Nadia that things aren’t right in their marriage, that he isn’t happy- why should be expect him to suddenly be more emboldened with the person that has literally captured his soul? Thony has come from a place of abuse in her previous relationship. A place where she was never enough, and never had the support she needed. while Arman has been there for her and showed her what that support has looked like, he also hasn’t shown her that she is enough. He iced her out when he went to prison and first came out; and now- even though he’s killed for her, he’s still making Nadia a priority.
The other side of their relationship; however, is this level of understanding that’s passed between them. They don’t do a great job at saying exactly what it is they feel, but they have this way of silently understanding one another and that prompts more open communication between them and allows them to better understand the other’s needs. Outside of just noticing things about one another, like when the other needs comfort; they have this understanding that they aren’t just friends and that there is something deeper there. Or different, as Arman put it. Their worlds can no longer exist without each other, but they also are too afraid to intertwine their worlds the way that we all want them to.
What I found most interesting about the scene where Arman returned the key card to Thony was that you could literally see the moment Thony shamed herself for allowing herself to feel. You could see her mentally calling herself reckless and stupid, and Arman trying to explain and fix things before she shut him down. Because she couldn’t face it, and she couldn’t fix it. And it broke my heart because we watched her be alone all over again and all I wanted to do was hug her and say “you are enough.” She took a very clear emotional step back in that moment, which was evident in how she delivered the news about Nadia to him in their final scene together. And I am so curious to see how they’re going to bridge that gap. Because in such a short time, she went from allowing herself to believe that she maybe would actually be able to find something real and genuine with a person that would love and support and accept her no matter the cost, to being hit with her reality- which is that Arman isn’t technically hers. And that line between their two families does, in fact, exist. That moment when the camera cuts to her after he yells at Garrett and uses the words “my wife,” was that first crack in that image Thony was building in her mind. And the keycard just shattered that little bubble even further. And it is delicious, regency era inspired drama that I am so excited to see unfold.
This post is already ridiculously long (seriously, if you’re still reading- hats off to you), but let me close with saying this: When Thony and Arman do finally have their moment of pure passion and love and desire and romance, I am so excited for it because it will actually have been earned. This show is very much told through the lens of the female gaze, and because of that, I want Thony’s embracing of her sexuality to be authentic to a grown ass woman that is steadfast in what she wants. I want it to be empowering for her, I want her to feel safe and not regretful. I want her to associate it with her having control and power over her own body and desires, and not replaced with a few lightly satisfying shots that will be purely fan service. Thony deserves so much more. Her relationship with Arman deserves more. And I cannot wait to watch them reach that more.

Okay, my thoughts on Shadow and Bone Season 2 are under the cut. This will focus mainly on Wylan and who he interacts with, so spoilers will absolutely be present.
S&B suffers from trying to cram too many characters and storylines into a measly 8 episodes. The show cuts corners and speedruns plots, relationships, and emotional impactful scenes that shouldn’t be rushed. I get why they’ve done this — they wanted to at least finish the trilogy this season because it’s unlikely they’re getting a third season.
Alina and her storyline aside — I hope you trilogy fans found something in there that gave you some amount of happiness / satisfaction — I’m here to talk about Wylan. I’ll start off by saying that Jack Wolfe? Killed it. He has the Wylan mannerisms down and the way he carries himself. He’s subtle in his performance while also having such wonderful expressions and movements. He has that nervous energy but is also quite eccentric. His body language gives off the impression that he's a traumatized young man who has suffered from abuse. It's not in your face or over-the-top, but you see it if you're paying attention. And I love that he played Wylan this way. Also, him playing the flute and piano? Fantastic. I love that they have a musically talented actor playing the role. Plus, a queer actor playing a queer character is amazing representation!
Let’s talk about Wesper. When I caught on to the hints they were dropping about how Wylan and Jesper might have hooked up before and Jesper somehow doesn’t remember, let me tell you, I was mad. Because that isn’t Wesper as we know it. I was about to just throw the whole show away, I’m not going to lie. @lannamused will tell you that I was like cancel the show now in our discord chat.
But I calmed down and, even when it was revealed that they had hooked up before, I heard it out. When Wylan said that he left first because he was afraid that was what Jesper was going to do (he uno-reversed it and that’s kind of iconic behavior) and then showed how hurt Jesper was by that, it gave the impression that this one night they had was actually more meaningful and both weren’t being entirely honest about how into each other they were. I think we can also applaud Jack and Kit’s acting choices for making that seem more believable.
Before we talk about Wesper, I want to talk about the random attempt at bringing up that Wylan couldn’t read. It was as if the writers were trying to cram it in last minute. It didn’t even make sense? The way Jesper messed up and then tried to correct himself made it seem like he already knew that Wylan couldn’t read and forgot, but then later he says he doesn’t know? But the way the writers wrote that scene was to have Wylan react as if he was pissed that Jesper forgot? If Jesper didn’t know, Wylan wouldn’t have asked what his forged name said on the passport. Wylan is very good at hiding his condition. He wouldn’t just draw attention to it like that. He’d do everything he could to avoid bringing it up and even change the subject or remove himself from the situation. Even if you think of it as being Wylan’s way of quietly bringing it up to Jesper so that they could start a discussion about his condition, it isn’t clear. There’s only so many gaps we as the audience can attempt to fill because of lazy writing and Wylan’s condition was made to seem like an afterthought.
So, yeah, that wasn’t cool.
Anyway, on to the Wesper scenes — Would I be lying if the kissing and cuddling scenes didn’t make my little Wesper heart freak out? Yeah! I was here for them! And like I said before, I think we can put that down to Jack and Kit being such good actors and having that amazing chemistry. Because that’s the thing, right? The chemistry is there. It’s there in spades. The writers and showrunners just didn’t want to show it because of time limitations. And by the time I’d seen all the episodes, I did end up buying their relationship (like a lot) especially after the whole poison scenario where they made up. That did really seal it for me and I came to realize that I can support Wesper existing this way.
Now to Wylan interacting with other characters who weren’t Jesper. It was fair for the amount of time there was. He got a few scenes with Kaz and the group as a whole. I kinda wanted more of Wylan and Kaz being the interesting duo they are, but I understand that there’s just too many characters and there’s no way to let all of them shine. He had some amazing moments when he did get the chance to be on screen. This is still Wylan early on in his development (even if they’ve completely remixed the Crows duology) and he isn’t yet confident to truly be himself (e.g. the talking back, the sassing Kaz, the petty side of him etc) but I imagine that they’re saving all that for the Crows spin-off the writers are so desperately hopeful for. I saw one of the writers tweet that she’d already written an episode that primarily focuses on Wylan: seen here.
Do I want a Crows spin-off to happen now? At first, I wasn't sure how it would work, but the ending is setting it up for the Ice Court heist. There’s a lot that happened this season that people might say should have been saved for the spin-off, but I get that they weren’t sure if they’d ever get that greenlit (and we still don’t know) so I understand that they wanted to give the fans some of those parts in case we never get them. So, when they bring in Jan Van Eck with the spin-off, that would lead to Wylan’s backstory! But no more rushing!!
So, I can accept the S&B show for what it is and the more time I spend thinking about it, the more I understand. I will take things from the show as canon such as Wylan’s habit of getting excited about different topics (like historical facts etc), him busking in the street with his flute, and only making the bomb for Kaz the first time because he was strapped for cash and barely had enough money to eat. Him being a miniature encyclopaedia and excitedly sharing random pieces of info with other characters was amazing, and I loved him nerding out over the butterfly and flowers. That scene was also good at showing that Wylan can admire something beautiful and rare but isn’t against killing the butterflies without a second thought if it means saving his friends. Also, it’s a small thing but they gave him goggles. That gets bonus points.
Please see this post on how Wylan's characterization and his relationship with Jesper will be handled on this blog. It will be a mix of book and show canon.

A Black Waltz (Short Story)
The Hero and Villain must face the consequences of their roles. They come to an impasse when they both decide they don’t want to kill each other.
"So why?" Hero asked as they began to move in tandem.
Crashing of golden cymbals echo in the dim-lit room, slipping into the ears of dancers. They dance in dark velvet curtains to hide from the eye of passerbys. Everyone paraded the black carpet, losing themselves in candlelight.
"Need you ask any questions? The picture is clear, mighty one."
"Can't you just make this simple for once," he retorts.
Villain brings Hero's heavy armored hand into the air during a crescendo inviting him to spin underneath her long arms.
"I don't think so," she says.
Instead of spinning under he pulls her towards him pressing himself against her slinky black dress. His hand on the small of her back, their faces a breath away. She looks regrettably entertained.
"You can't pull that kind of shit on me," he says. They pull apart and circle, a minute of silence before they begin to waltz. The music fills the air.
"Then, another option," she begins. "You don't kill me and nobody knows?"
"You can’t answer the question or don’t want to?”
"You know why you want to kill me Hero. That should be enough. Why’re you hesitating?" they exchange hands in a flourish as a violin's song increases the tempo. Hero's heavy armor clatters as he attempts to keep up with Villain, her fluid movements blending into the dark ambience of the speakeasy.
"I could cut you down through your dress right now," he threatens.
"Do you really want to? I'll kill everyone in this building because of you. Don't be stupid." a haunting grin.
Hero's face contorts in angst. No response.
"You should've left me alone, Hero." she gets a good look at him. "And you shouldn’t let me get away," the words roll off her intrepid tongue. Trumpets sound as the music reaches a climax. The dancers waltz in harmony, the frills of dresses flying in the air.
Hero take's Villain's hand above her head and she spins underneath it intuitively into his arms. She leans back to look up at him but he avoids her gaze.
"You should've never invited me, Hero. Now one of us is going to die tonight," Hero lifts her up to her feet and their eyes meet. A night-time optical illusion, a tool of hypnosis, those eyes. They were charmingly coercive when she showed her humanity. Her and all her secrets.
"Do anything funny and I’ll kill you then and there,"
"Oh? You sure about that? Well aren't you a true soldier now." a mischievous chuckle.
Hero let's go of her hands and coldly brushes past her towards the front door. If anyone knew it was her in this speakeasy every guard in Antem would swarm this place like the plague. And if anyone knew he still had dealings with her after she killed the Sages they'd kill him too.
The music comes to a climactic end and dancers applaud the musicians with a standing ovation. They take a bow on-stage before walking behind the velvet curtains. The crowd begins dispersing, disappearing back into the quiet of night.
Outside of the speakeasy Hero stands underneath a tent of lights in front of a local butcher. The attendees walk out from a hidden room and onto the rainy streets heading home after donning their expensive coats.
"So you're just going to invite me all the way here and leave me in the rain?" says Villain. Her intricate diamond jewelry and racy black dress make her look like just another devilish woman. She seemed a bemusing and magical being. Nobody knew what this small woman was truly capable of.
"You can find your own way home if you wanted to." Hero waves his gilded arm to a nearby carriage that stops on the road beside him. A man in a black raincoat plops off his horse to hold the door open. Hero hands the man a generous lump of coins before stepping in to take a seat.
Villain invites herself into the carriage beside Hero and his expression remains austere. He shows no emotion in this very intimate space hardly looking at her.
"I hope you know I don't think you're a fool Hero. I wasn't kidding when I said you don't have to kill me. Nobody would know. It's not a crime to just want to be done with it all is it? I won’t tell."
"That's what you want isn't it? That's why you came. To offer me one last chance to run away?"
"I came here because I wanted to see you,"
"You came here to see me one last time."
"And that, my love, was your decision. Was it not?"
"Because I'm not running away like you did."
“Oh, you’re not?”
The carriage passes by streetlight after streetlight without them saying anything. Villain rests her head on Hero's cold armor.
"I don't want to kill you Hero," she murrs. "Is that why you invited me here? To slash me in some back alley?" she asks. Dead silence.
"Maybe I shouldn't have come," she sighs then curls into his shoulders before he pulls away.
"You should know when enough is enough. Everybody wants you dead and you're acting like nothing happened since you left Antem. It's too late for that."
"So why not just kill me now?"
"Because I'm the only one who knows the real you."
"So what, that means something now? Don't tell me you invited me here to ask me to stop? To tell Antem I'm sorry?"
"I invited you to look at you in the face before I buried you."
"You're a strong man." her voice becomes flat. "A bad liar though. I never thought I'd see you pick Antem over me one day. I have to say, it's quite disgusting."
"You should've never betrayed the council. I alone know you fled like a coward and killed the Sages for fear of them beheading you. Fear because you couldn't face judgment for your actions."
"I won't face judgment for doing my people a favor."
"They aren't your people anymore. You murdered the Ancient Sages. You've done nothing for Antem." he crosses his arms.
"Anyone who works for the royals in this city are bound to die. Look at what they did to you. You're no Hero, but they dressed you up in golden armor and gave you an oversized dagger then told you to hunt down your traitorous woman. And you said 'yes master.' You were never a Hero and I was never a Villain. But look at what Antem did to us."
"This is what you did to Antem. You deserve to die."
"And Antem should be grateful. So kill me."
The carriage stops in front of an abandoned brick building. It's surrounded by a sea of grass and weeds. They step down from the carriage into mud and watch the horses as they trail off slowly into the dark rain. They were alone now, out of reach from the eyes and ears of the city.
"This could end badly for both of us in a lot of ways you know," she says.
"Don't tell me you're scared after everything we've already done."
"I don't want to lose you Hero."
They approach the decrepit cabin with a gaping distance between them. He unlocks the door and sets his sword onto the chair next to the fireplace. Splinters rise out the floor as support beams from the ceiling drip rainwater onto them. The place is tattered and being lit by a single warm lantern.
"Take it off," he says.
"So you don't want to kill me?"
"Take off the jewelry." He reaches his hands out.
Villain walks up to the Hero and shows her back to him, brushing her hair to the front of her shoulder. He takes off his gauntlets and sets them beside the lantern to remove the clutch of her jewelry. It shines dangerously bright, a prismatic rainbow of light trapped in it is desperately trying to escape.
"It feels like we're together again," she says reminiscedly. He put's her jewelry into a small pouch with mysterious markings and seals it shut with a magical talisman. He throws it back at her and motions her to a chair to sit down in front of another.
"Answer my question. Why? No circles." he says sternly.
"Why what? Why don't you tell me why you invited me?”
"I don't want to kill you either."
"But you would? For Antem?" No answer. "Hero, Antem isn't going to let you live if you spare me." she says coldly.
"Why'd you start all of this? People had faith in you once you made it to the council. Why would you betray us like this? Betray me?”
She relaxes and crosses her feet together. Looking down at the markings of the bag that now trapped her jewelry, she seems entranced by the red glow of the talisman.
"You know what they're like. Or maybe you don't. They're liars, Hero. They deserved to die."
"Even if it was true, why slaughter them like pigs? Are you mad? Those were your comrades, our comrades." his tone full of repulsion.
"They fooled you Hero. Look at you. It sounds like you cared about them. They've misled the people. Misled you and me. We all have our secrets. They were no different."
"This still doesn't tell me why you started a war."
Villain leans forward into her chair.
"I killed them because it was what's best for Antem. They could never see into the future. They had no ancient magic. It's that simple."
"Don't act like you're doing the right thing. You disappear for nearly a decade just to tell me you're the reason magic started working again?" he scoffs.
"They didn’t have access to ancient material. They lied to everybody. They couldn't see into the future because they don’t even have connections to the gates. I did. They said they couldn't bring mana back to Antem. So they used me like I was a tool, Hero. Just like how they're using you now."
"You killed the Sages. Do you not understand what that means? You don't deserve that kind of power. You told me that communicating with the ancient realms to go through gates was supposed to bring Antem hope. And then you used it to kill them."
She stays silent. Her eyes look down somberly at her jewelry it's light hidden in the sack as she messes with the enchanted talisman.
"I don't care about Antem anymore, Hero. Kill me. I know you want to. I know that’s why we’re here.” she whispers.
The crackling of the flame in the lantern seems so loud. It flickers as their shadows dance against the brick walls. Droplets of water hit the ground making a puddle that dampens the wood beneath them. All night his face had been stoic and emotionless. Now you could see a slight expression. A feeling of regret.
"I should've never invited you here." he says.
"Don’t tell me you still love me?" she asks. No response. "I know that's why they made you the Hero, to punish you. You're strong. I love that about you. Don't waste it on Antem. Come with me."
"Antem is our home. Everyone is scared. People in the city want you dead. I can’t leave.”
"I know."
"How could you kill those soldiers? I can't believe you. I didn't know you would do something so," he’s visibly shaken he comes to a loss of words.
"So stupid?" she finishes.
"I don't want to kill you."
"But you do want to. For them. You can go back with my head and be the Hero of Antem. It's okay." she squeezes the bag holding her necklace. “You don’t have to lie to me anymore. I knew this was a trap when I accepted your invitation.”
"I said I don't want to kill you,"
"You can't be honest with yourself even now? Antem is in shambles. You're supposed to guide their people to hope. No one is promised a happy future if I'm alive."
No response.
"Hero," she stands with her jewelry clenched in a fist over him, towering. “You told Antem you'd kill me."
"I didn't have a choice,"
"You do have a choice. You follow orders like a lap dog. That's your choice. You wanted to slash me in that speakeasy the same as anybody else. Admit it."
And again, silence.
"You really do love me after everything don't you?" she walks away with her head in her hands.
Hero says nothing. His gaze avoids her.
"You know why that can't be don't you, Hero?"
The energy becomes still. After a long pause she takes small steps through the splintered floor to his sword. She wraps her hand around the rough hilt and unsheathes a large blade of blue steel. She brings herself down to her knees on the floor beside his chair and gently grabs his hand.
“I didn’t want to betray Antem. After I knew the Sages weren’t telling everyone on the council the truth I realized we didn’t run out of Mana. They kept it to themselves. We all worked hard and listened to the Sages prophecy because they said we’d reach a golden age. They lied Hero. They’re all liars. They lied to us. I saw my opportunity, and I killed them for it. I’m sorry.”
She wraps his palm around the sword before laying her cheek on his cold golden armor and closing her eyes.
“They deserved to die. I came here wanting to die. I just wanted to see you one more time. I wanted it to be you. I thought after all these lifetimes surely you hated me and would’ve killed me by now.”
The Hero sat in silence. His palm wrapped around his sword.
“You won’t though.” her eyes open. “Right Hero?”
The light of the candle left their shadow on the brick wall dancing for a while. And just like before he went back to being as emotionless as the castle walls of Antem. The candle flickered strongly before going out and leaving the cabin in darkness.
The wind blows the sea of grass, creating a wave of shadows and whooshing against the decrepit cabin. Creaking of the wood crept into the ears of the Hero and Villain. But the two remained quiet. Breathing. A full moon floats above in the night sky, stuck in it’s proper place.
The violent winds were all that kept this secluded location from an eerie silence. It was far, far away from the eyes and ears of the city and it’s citizens. A nameless and abandoned house, sat there lifeless. The door of the cabin never opened. The light of the lantern never came on. And the quiet night finally comes to an end.
In the morning the house draws the attention of traveling folk. It was surrounded by soldiers of Antem’s Royal Guard. They surround the building looking for the Hero and the Villain. There is no trace of them anywhere. Nobody has seen or heard from either of them all night.
Inside the cabin the lantern sat dead. The Hero’s sword lie on the floor at the end of a blood trail leading into the backdoor. Parts of his armor are also found by the fireplace, perfectly in tact. In the corner of the room lies the brown sack that belonged to the Villain. The dangerously bright red emanated from the talisman. Inside of it, a prismatic color glowed strongly as if it were trying to escape.
"Dance with me?" The Villan asked, outreaching an arm.
Hero tentivly took Villans hand, feeling the rough ridges and callous' of Villans palm.
Villan grinned. "Let us waltz," He said.

Initiative - aka NMJ and JYL get engaged - ao3 or tumblr pt 1, pt 2
Jiang Yanli’s first engagement had been announced when she was three and a half years old – there had been a big party, festooned in color, exquisitely and meticulously planned out in advance, and she’d been obliged to stand on stage next to a baby in a cradle that had done nothing but cry and spit as all the adults around her congregated and congratulated each other on the excellent match.
She hadn’t enjoyed that at all.
Her second wedding announcement was simultaneously more casual and more noteworthy, and she enjoyed it tremendously.
Madame Jin had sent several invitations to Jiang Yanli to come visit Lanling in advance of the hunt planned for Phoenix Mountain, speaking of how beautiful it was and how much she looked forward to seeing her good friend’s daughter – talking about she’d always regretted how Jiang Yanli had been obligated by circumstances to take shelter at the Unclean Realm rather than in Lanling City, although she’d been pleased to hear from her son that she was doing well – all the right sort of words. The words might have been more welcome if Jiang Yanli hadn’t known that Madame Jin was still intent on securing the marriage she had arranged.
If she hadn’t been engaged, she would have accepted the invitation, hoping to form an alliance for her sect through a close relationship with Madame Jin even if she didn’t have one with Jin Zixuan (no matter what Madame Jin hoped), but as she was, in fact, engaged to another – even if it hadn’t been formally announced – it would be inappropriate to go. So she instead played ignorant and responded graciously, protesting that she couldn’t possibly impose, that the rebuilding at the Lotus Pier needed her, but that she would of course be happy to attend the hunt alongside the rest of her sect.
She arrived at her brother’s side, smiling all the while.
Her second engagement was announced like this: Sect Leader Jin, using his newly legitimized son as his mouthpiece, had brought forward some ghastly ‘entertainment’ that involved shooting at helpless prisoners, tied up in chains. Jin Zixuan had complied, but Wei Wuxian had marched out and disrupted everything by showing off to a ridiculous extent – Nie Mingjue, who had been watching with a black face full of rage but unable to speak due to propriety, had started applauding very loudly and very enthusiastically – and Sect Leader Jin had ordered the prisoners taken away.
“Well, then,” he said, clapping as if he had impressed himself: as if they hadn’t just been subjected to a powerplay under the guise of hospitality, as if everyone would be over-awed by his might now that they had seen him abuse the helpless while they were all forced by the rules of etiquette to say nothing or else risk carrying the blame for trying to start another war. “Absent anything else, we should proceed to the hunt itself, where await you only the finest of prey and the sharpest competition among your peers.”
For the further display of the power of the Jin sect, he meant.
“Actually,” Nie Mingjue said, interjecting in a moment in which Sect Leader Jin had paused to take a breath so that it was technically not an interruption, “there is one thing. A request, in fact.”
Sect Leader Jin’s eyes narrowed in suspicion, but he maintained his false smile. “Of course, Sect Leader Nie. What can I do for you?”
“I’m getting married,” Nie Mingjue said. “The bride is Young Mistress Jiang, of Yunmeng Jiang, and I would like –” He raised his voice to overcome the abrupt explosion of talk that had erupted. “– I would like to have her accompany my sect in today’s hunt. I hope that doesn’t interfere with your plans for a competition between the sects?”
There were those who said that Jiang Yanli’s chosen husband was bad at politics, and they might even be right. But it didn’t really matter in the end if he’d thought of the idea on a whim or if it’d been a prearranged plan by Nie Huaisang, who was cleverer than he liked to let on to people, Jiang Yanli’s future husband had still wiped away in a single sentence all memory of the farce they’d all just endured and of the hunt that was yet to come, ensuring that the only thing anyone would remember about today was the shocking news of the engagement of the leader of one Great Sect to the sister of another.
(And if everyone remembered that at the last celebration hosted by Sect Leader Jin, he had proposed to resurrect the marriage between Jiang Yanli and his own son, instead, forcing her to publicly demur on vague terms…well, that just made it all the more satisfying.)
Now it was Sect Leader Jin’s turn to scowl and glare, and Madame Jin’s expression looked no less thunderous, but in the end Jiang Yanli got to go with the Nie sect on the hunt.
“You know I’ll only slow you down,” she said to Nie Mingjue, who snorted.
“No more than Huaisang will,” he said, and if his face was stern and his voice gruff then she still thought she detected fondness and humor beneath it. “Besides, it’ll be a good opportunity to measure you.”
It turned out that he meant that more literally than she might have thought.
Jiang Yanli was promptly whisked away to the back of the Nie retinue by a small cadre of Nie disciples, men and women both. She was presented with a number of training sabers shaped out of wood and made to hold them in a variety of positions as they murmured things about stability and reach and balance as if they really, truly thought that she would actually use the saber they were preparing for her.
“This one,” Nie Jiahui, a steely older woman with silver in her hair and fierce eyes, eventually announced, and the practice saber Jiang Yanli had been waving around was taken away. She was then presented with one that was twice as heavy, for “practice”.
“Do you always practice with something heavier than the actual thing?” she asked, and Nie Jiahui nodded.
“Strengthens the shoulders,” she said, curt but not standoffish. “Have some candy.”
Jiang Yanli blinked, but smiled and accepted the offer. It was licorice, which she liked.
“Do you often carry candy with you on night-hunts?” she asked, listening to the sound of fighting from up ahead. Every so often, a disciple or two would trot by carrying the corpses of larger and larger creatures, slain in the fighting; it seemed that the Nie sect was not, in fact, being slowed down in the slightest by her presence.
Of course, she also wasn’t being tended to as if she were their chosen lady, either, as she might have otherwise expected – all pomp and flowery language, Nie Mingjue by her side at all times to show her around as if they were on a pleasure stroll – but in all honesty that would have been a little bewildering. It was very much not the Nie sect’s character, all practical and straightforward, and she found that she preferred it that way.
“It’s important to have something to replenish energy,” Nie Huaisang said, having dropped back to join them from the front. He looked tired and grumpy, but his saber appeared to have been put to some work; he immediately climbed up into the carriage that people were taking turns riding and started cleaning it. “And licorice candy clears the lungs.”
“Clears the lungs?” Jiang Yanli asked.
“It’s good for more than that,” Nie Jiahui said. “But that’s one of the uses, yes. Do you ever feel like your chest is too tight, especially when you move too much? Leading to coughing, shortness of breath, your lips turning blue?”
Jiang Yanli blinked. “Yes,” she said. “But that’s just because I was born with a weak body.”
Nie Jiahui scoffed and Nie Huaisang laughed. “Good luck with that,” he said cheerfully. “I was born with muscles that didn’t keep their tone: too flexible, incapable of gathering strength, requiring more energy to do less, making me twice as tired twice as fast – even sitting up straight can be a struggle in some extreme cases, though luckily not mine. And do you think that helped me one bit in getting out of saber training? It did not.”
“Early childhood intervention is best,” Nie Jiahui said. “But the next best is starting today. I’ll show you some low-impact exercises that you can start working on to strengthen your shoulders and stomach, as well as some balance movements to center yourself and improve your posture – that way, by the time your actual saber is ready, you’ll be able to take it through one of the basic routines.”
“I’m happy to learn whatever you have to teach,” Jiang Yanli said, ignoring Nie Huaisang’s dramatic cry of ‘And here I thought you’d be on my side!’ “I only regret troubling you.”
“Not at all,” Nie Jiahui said. “It’ll be good to have someone watching the Sect Leader’s back on night-hunts.”
Jiang Yanli felt a surge of terror and excitement in her belly. “He would trust me with that? You would trust me with that?”
“I did tell you that you’d need to keep up with him,” Nie Huaisang said mildly, and it was true, he had, only she’d assumed it was a bit more metaphorical. “You don’t have to fight or even walk too much, if it doesn’t suit you – my grandmother was lame in both her legs from a childhood illness, she rode everywhere, scariest woman I’ve ever met by far – but you do have to be there. Someone needs to be able to tell my brother to stop. Someone he’ll listen to.”
And wasn’t that something of a thrill to think of?
Jiang Yanli wasn’t someone anyone listened to – not her parents, not her brother, not her sect disciples. She’d always been the one who comforted them afterwards, who supported them; she made them food and tried to convince them to be kinder to each other, and sometimes they even tried for a while before getting into another tiff. They would kill for her if she so much as hinted at it, tear down the sky for her, but it was more in the nature of indulging her rather than actually allowing them to guide her.
Yet here was Chifeng-zun, a war hero and a sect leader, one of the most powerful men in the world, a man admired by men and sought after (even if only in their hearts) by women, and his family was telling her that he would listen to her.
“If you say so,” she demurred, but they insisted, and by the time the hunt was over Jiang Yanli was surprised to realize that she hadn’t needed to resort to sitting on the carriage more than twice the entire time.
“We’ll send Auntie Jiahui to the Lotus Pier after today’s hunt is done,” Nie Huaisang chattered cheerfully in her ear as they headed back towards Jinlin Tower. “She’ll work you through your paces, believe you me, and all the supplemental things, too – making sure you eat the right thing, take medicinal baths to improve your meridians, apply massages to loosen your joints…those parts are nice, actually. Take care of your body as you would your saber, take care of your saber as you would your wife! That’s how the saying goes. Trust me, you’ll be regretting the whole thing soon enough.”
Jiang Yanli didn’t think she would. “You seem very confident that A-Cheng will allow you to do as you please, even in the Lotus Pier.”
“I’ll tell him it concerns secret Nie sect marriage rituals,” Nie Jiahui interjected. “When two women are involved, men tend to run away when the words ‘marriage’ and ‘secret’ are combined.”
Sadly, she was probably right.
“Show me those exercises again,” she requested, and Nie Jiahui climbed up on to the carriage to show her the ones she could do even while sitting down.
Jiang Yanli might never have had the opportunity to strengthen herself before, and she was moderately certain that she wouldn’t have too much success now, as the various tricks Nie Jiahui had taught her were largely body refinement, barely reliant on qi, and her cultivation was still as low as ever.
But she was good at devoting herself to learning something when she wanted to, and as soon the hunt at Phoenix Mountain was over and they had shifted over to the various feasts and meetings that Lanling Jin had planned for the rest of the week, she began her efforts at self-improvement in earnest.
The weak body her mother had always despaired of might always be weak – Nie Jiahui had been quite blunt on that subject, making it clear that nothing she was suggesting was some sort of miracle pill, and furthermore that there was nothing wrong with being weak as long as she made an effort (Nie Huaisang had been the recipient of several pointed looks there) – but Jiang Yanli was determined to at least demonstrate that she was trying.
A gesture of good faith, perhaps. Some small show of initiative.
Nie Huaisang had said that Nie Mingjue appreciated her initiative.
“A-Xian,” she called one morning, only a few days later. “A-Xian, are you going out for a walk? Let me come with you.”
“You’ve gone on a lot of walks recently,” Wei Wuxian laughed, but allowed her to take his arm as they walked into the crowd. “Do you like Lanling City so much?”
“It’s the exercise I’m after,” she said, smiling at him. “The Nie sect is a martial sect, remember? I’ll be going on more night-hunts in the future, if all goes well, and I’ll need to keep up.”
“Oh, but surely they’ll bring a carriage..? I don’t know if you really need to go on night-hunts –”
“I want to! It’ll be nice. Don’t worry about me so much, A-Xian –”
Wei Wuxian was shaking his head, smiling, and he wasn’t looking where he was going; perhaps that was why he bumped into the young woman.
But then she looked up at him, and he looked down at her, and he froze.
“Wen Qing?”

Curiosity Killed the Exorcist
“And then, see here? You have to be on the lookout for subtle signs like these. This indicates that he’s…” Marinette nodded as Tim continued explaining, pointing out various body language and other clues out on the Batcomputer. It had only been about six months since the Batfam collectively adopted the little ladybug into their menagerie of heroes, and started teaching her deductive habits and skills. She would not allow them anywhere near Paris on pain of death (some of them had already tried, and Bruce was still recovering from the bruise to his ego. The bruise on his ass from being teleported out of the city and onto the stone of the Batcave was gone, though) but she welcomed any help they could give from within Gotham’s city limits.
Usually, at least in the beginning, they did their mentorship at a distance over video call. But then Tim found out her identity, and Marinette made the excuse of wanting to meet with them in person to gauge their trustworthiness for herself and erase their memories of her identity if they failed her test— and, well, it all snowballed from there until she was teleporting to the Batcave every few days for detective lessons. She was practically a Bat herself, if not for her out of theme codename. And she found herself surprisingly comfortable with the thought of them being a… very eccentric extended family.
Tim was flipping to another saved video in the Batcomputer archives to show another example of his current lesson, when Tikki flew up to Marinette in a hurry. She was holding Kaalki’s glasses. The little kwami whispered something in Marinette’s ear, instantly making the teen blanch and force on the glasses.
“Sorry Timmy, gotta cut this short! I’ll come back tomorrow to make up for it! Okay? Okay! Awesome, you’re the best, bye!” She ignored all of Tim’s protests and rapid fire questions, instead opening up a portal and jumping through it as fast as humanly possible. The portal has barely disappeared before an all-too-familiar voice rose up from behind Tim.
“Maybe I’m still drunk, ‘cause I could’a sworn I just saw a portal closing in the damned Batcave, of all places,” the British-accented drawl was accompanied by the flick of a lighter and accompanying fizzle of a flame. Tim groaned, mentally making a note to ask how in the world Marinette had known that John “Annoying asshole” Constantine was showing up soon, and if he could be in on the warning next time. Bruce, cowl still off, walked over from where he had been sparring with Damian and crossed his arms. He had also heard Marinette’s hasty exit, and made a few mental notes of his own before focusing on the exorcist in front of him.
“What do you want, Constantine?” he grumbled. Any time the blond brit showed up, things only got far more complicated than he ever enjoyed. And he always gave Bruce a migraine, to boot.
“Two things actually, Batsy,” John held up to fingers as his free hand tucked his lighter away in his pocket. His unlit cigarette stayed in his mouth though, probably just for the familiar feel of it. “One; I’m gonna need you to tell me why there was a portal closing when I walked in, because I’ll be honest. The implications there are way more interesting than what I came here for in the first place.”
“None of your business. What’s the second thing?” Bruce immediately shot him down, but John was not one to be deterred. He never fucking was.
“But you hate magic! You make sure I know that all too bloody well every time I pay you a visit, so why the sudden change in heart? Huh?”
“Drop it, Constantine. What. Do you. Want?”
“Fine, fine. I need your help with…”
— * — * — * — * — *
A week later, Marinette was sitting with Jason and Damian in one of the manor’s sitting rooms, the three of them just minding their own business and silently enjoying one another’s presence. Even if two of them would never admit it. Jason was reading Jane Eyre for the millionth time, Damian was leaning against Titus on the ground as he sketched, and Marinette was embroidering a sunhat. Unfortunately for her, Alfred the Cat was currently asleep on her lap and thus holding her hostage.
Even as Tikki flew up to her ear in a panic and whispered, making Marinette prick herself with her needle. She hissed for a second but shrugged off the familiar pain, much more concerned with whatever news Tikki had given her. Damian and Jason were already on high alert from the second that a whispered curse had left her lips, and were staring straight at her and her kwami and Marinette frantically tried to find a way to get up without awakening the cat sleeping on her.
“Uh, what’s wrong?” Jason asked, feeling thoroughly confused and left out. On one hand, he knew that if they were in physical danger she would have moved Alfred the Cat without hesitation. On the other, he did not like the sheer amount of anxiety he could see her experiencing. Marinette’s frantic eyes shot over to him, pupils mere pinpricks and hands mouth agape as she tried to form some sort of plan.
“Uh— “
“Ah! You must be the fair maiden that the Bats are comfortable with using magic around them,” John goddamned Constantine threw the door to the sitting room open wide, making it bounce off of the wall and lightly smack back against his shoulder. He ignored it as he grinned at the three younger people in the room, waltzing in casual as anything. He wagged a finger at her playfully. “I’ve been awfully curious about you, ya know? Brucie boy knows a shit ton of magic users, but he never likes seein’ any of us do our thing. And to not only allow you to teleport without any apparent discomfort but to actively protect your identity from me? Now that’s a damn accomplishment and I really gotta applaud you for it,” he mockingly clapped his hands a few times. “So what’s your secret, huh? I won’t tattle.”
“No thanks. Kaalki, a little help?” Marinette carefully pushed Alfred the Cat off of her lap before diving into the portal that Kaalki whipped up for her, the entire process happening so fast that Constantine couldn’t even get out a proper “hey!” before she was gone and the portal closed. He just nodded, hooking his thumbs in his pockets.
“Ya know what? Fair. That’s fair.”
“Goddamn it, Constantine!” Jason threw up his hands in frustration. “Why the fuck do you have to scare away one of the only sane people in this family?”
“Part of my charm, little red riding hood.”
— * — * — * — * — *
“You know, I’ve been pretty damn nice not teleporting right over to you whenever you disappear. So why don’t you just tell me why you’re avoiding me now that we happen to be in the same room by complete accident, huh?” John asked from where he sat in one of Bruce’s lounge chairs sipping on a beer. Marinette mimed choking him, clearly fed up. He had been trying to have a conversation with her for the past three months, ever since that one time he caught the tail end of her portal closing in the Batcave. Three. Long. Months. And he hadn’t given up, because something about this little Parisian teenager intrigued him. She was sixteen, that much he had gathered from the Bats. But to be sixteen and not only in possession of the Horse miraculous but also clearly the Ladybugs, since he had seen Tikki more than once as well, now that was interesting.
Anybody being in the possession of more than one Miraculous was already cause enough to be keeping an eye on them, which was why he had been keeping an eye on the Paris situation and had pieced together on his own that the presence of Tikki meant that this little parisian teenager was none other than Ladybug herself. Now, that? That was a whole new level of concerning, especially since he knew firsthand that the old Grand Guardian was gone and passed his title down to— yeah, Ladybug.
After that deduction, his interest in Marinette had swiftly switched from curiosity to fuck-I-need-to-know-what’s-going-on-here. Because no kid should have to deal with that kind of weight, and Constantine always looked out for kids when he could.
But right then, Marinette was glaring at him. She had been just coming over for a normal “family” dinner with the Waynes, which she attended from time to time. And apparently they had decided to have Constantine already over so that they could chaperone a meeting between them that would hopefully appease the stupid british magic user enough that he left them all alone again until the next time he needed help.
“Believe me when I say, you’d rather not know,” she replied sharply, glaring Dick. He was the one who had convinced her to come despite her recent close calls with Constantine in the past few days. He studiously avoided her gaze. “I just would rather not cross your path, and there’s no reason for us to interact. Why do you care, anyway?”
“You see, now that is an excellent question!” he chugged the last of his beer and gestured to her with the empty bottle. “Normally, I wouldn’t give a flying rat’s ass. But I’ve put two and two together, since I know who Tikki is,” he nodded to the red and black Kwami. “And maybe I just wanna keep an eye on the new Grand Guardian to make sure she’s doin’ alright. That’s an awful lot of magic and responsibility that you don’t deserve, but I’m not about to try to take it away. Keepin’ an eye on you is the next best thing.”
“Try again,” Marinette shot back, crossing her arms. “You were interested in me before you learned about me being Ladybug.”
“I’m nosy, what do you want me to say? I saw a portal in Batman’s man-cave, I get curious. Sue me.”
“Well. I have Bruce and everyone else already watching out for me, so you can leave me alone now. If I need your help, I’ll make sure to ask every other magic user first before contacting you.”
“Woah, now what’s all this venom for?”
“Uh, maybe we should go and actually eat dinner?” Dick tried to step in, hands up. Constantine had stood up from the chair he was in, which was usually a cue to change the subject as fast as possible. “Before Alfred has to come get us?”
“Maybe I’ll be less venomous if you let the subject drop and leave me alone!”
“Context would be nice, though.”
“Seriously guys, let’s go! Food!” Dick was once again ignored.
“Context is the last thing you need in this situation,” Marinette’s voice was suddenly soft, her arms dropping to her sides. “We’ve had this conversation so many times in so many now-deleted timelines. Just drop it this time.”
“If those timelines are now-deleted, then I obviously don’t remember what’s so bad about telling me why you’re acting like I’m some hated family member you’re avoiding!”
Silence.
Pure. Fucking. Silence. As they all watch with front row seats as Marinette flinches at the word ‘family’.
Pure silence as Constantine’s shoulders drop at the sight of her flinch, realization slapping itself on his face.
“No.”
“See? I fucking knew you would— that this would happen. This always happens, you always hate finding it out, but you’re so— so stubborn!” Marinette was blinking away tears, digging in her pockets and bringing out Kaalki’s glasses. “You’ll drop it now, at least. You always do.”
“Now what is that supposed to mean?” Constantine rubbed his forehead, still trying to sort through his amalgam of emotions. Marinette just shook her head, turning to Kaalki.
“Do you mind showing Monsieur Constantine the way out, Kaalki? I’ll grab you a load of sugar cubes afterward.”
“No, wait, hang on a second!”
A portal opened up under him, making John “Stubborn Idiot” Constantine drop ten feet down onto the hardwood, polished floor of his house. His bruised tailbone would take a while to heal, but his frazzled mind was by far the more concerning development. He staggered to his feet, reaching for the nearest bottle of tequila.
“Ugh, fuck my damn life.”
— * — * — * — * — *
“Marinette..?” Damian nudged the girl with his shoulder, frowning. It was after dinner that same day, and as much as he hated to admit it he had grown to actually like having her around. She was a good friend to have. And seeing her slumped back on one of their sofas, sketchbook covering her face and not a single rambling conversation to be had or heard? It was very concerning. She just made a groaning sound to answer him, prompting his frown to deepen. “Are you alright?”
“I just can’t believe that such a sweet, adorable thing like you is half made up of Constantine’s genes,” Jason mused bluntly from the opposite couch, where he tossed a rubber ball up and down out of boredom. “But now I see where you get all of your Disaster Bi-ness from.”
“Shut uuuuup,” She groaned, chucking her sketchbook at him. He caught it in midair, replacing his rubber ball with it and tossing it up and down in the air. “I’m just frustrated. This timeline is still perfectly stable, so I can’t erase it. And I can’t exactly ask ‘hey, can someone commit a horrid atrocity that makes this timeline split from the main one so that I can erase it and we can start over from four months ago?’ because that would be horribly irresponsible of me. But seriously, Jason. If you’re gonna ever commit, like, city-wise arson? I’d probably condone it right now if only so I have an excuse to use time travel to get out of this situation.”
“Not committing arson unless you give me a better reason for it, Pigtails.”
“Damn.”
“But are you okay?” Damian asked again, seeing as she had completely ignored him.
“I’m fine, Damian,” she finally sighed. “And I know how this is gonna go. He’s going to totally ignore me now, until we meet during some magical crisis and he only interacts with me when necessary. Then he pretends we never met, we have a private little one-sided whisper-argument about how he will never make a good father figure and I would be better off leaving him alone, blah blah blah. Avoidance is a coping mechanism I guess I inherited from him.”
“Guess it’s a good thing I’m trying to bite that in the bud then, eh?” Marinette startled out of her sitting position, seeing John stumble into the room…
Drunk off his ass. But apparently still at least mildly coherent.
“I agree with deleted-me’s, I’m not gonna be a dad. Not me,” he tripped, landing on his still-bruised ass and hissing in pain before continuing from the floor; “So if you’re looking for another Daddy dearest, that ain’t me.”
“See, I knew this is how you’d—”
“Let me finish,” he interrupted. “I don’t know how long the booze is gonna last and I need it’s courage here. ‘Kay? ‘Kay. Where was I? Right. But I know magic, ya know. The kind that doesn’t rely on little bobblehead gods to do. I got— like, a million books. Shit ton of books. At my place. Ya can read ‘em. My books. At my place. But I ain’t gonna parent, but I can lend ya books. Maybe give magic advice. Teach a little. Little bit. Didn’t think I’d have a child, but apparently I do and she’s the fuckin’ grand guardian and a damn hero, and I don’t know how the fuck I was able to help make someone like that. But whatever, it’s not like the world’s ever fuckin’ been easy on me,” He pulled out a sample-sized bottle of whiskey from one of the pockets on the inside of his trench coat and chugged it. After a brief wince and hiss at the burn, he kept rambling. “My door’s open, is what I’m tryin’ to say. No guarantee I’ll be in any state to talk to when you walk through it, but it’s open.”
Deciding to steadfastly ignore the tears streaming down her face, Marinette just swallowed thickly and nodded.
“I, uh. I think I can work with that.”
John barely made it to the nearby bin in time to vomit into it.

I hate my imagination sometimes, guys. I started imagining a convo between Mari and Constantine at like 4am and it wouldn't leave me alone until I got it down. but by the time I wrote it, I kinda forgot like 60% of the original convo and just winged it. And this was born. I 100% blame @multifandomscribette because their Bio!dad John Constantine headcannons are amazing and even though this isn't in that universe, those headcannons are exactly what inspired this. So blame them, lol.

Southern Hope (Arthur Morgan x Female Reader)
❝ If by any chance...in another lifetime, we happen to see each other again, I'll come and find you. And I'll make you fall in love with me, over and over again ❞
In which romance novelist, Mary-Beth under the pen name of Leslie Dupont, writes a coming of age love story based on her favourite gang members in the past, You and Arthur.
Trigger Warnings; Violence | Blood | Angst | Sexual Intentions
A/N: This is a project I've been working on for quite a while. I had the idea in mind when I had the chance to experience the musical composition of Aaron Copland's quintessential American Dream, 'Appalachian Spring' -one of my favourite pieces with such a beautiful storyline. And I wanted to retell it in the form of a book that is available on my Wattpad (ongoing) for you to enjoy from Mary-Beth's POV. I hope you show love to this book as much as I loved writing it. Have a sneak peek at the prologue!
Read on Wattpad here for more chapters to come!
PROLOGUE
Leslie Dupont; Mary-Beth Gaskill
Lemoyne, Saint Denis
November 1907
-
“Mademoiselle Dupont, we expect your next manuscript to be submitted by next summer. Now is not the time to be reminiscing.”
Here we go again
Mary-Beth sighed as her editor, Céline Laurent, had warned her once more for not meeting the deadline to her books. She was in a crucial position in her life. After her debut as a romance novelist, The Lady of The Manor was an instant best-seller across the country. It was the kind of thing she specializes in, silly ol’ romances.
“I promise you, I’ll get it done by then.” Or maybe, at least not for now. She shouldn't have promised something she couldn’t keep, especially in the meantime.
“I’ll take your word for that, if you don’t meet the deadline by then. Y’know what will happen to your contract, Leslie.” Céline stood at the door frame of Mary-Beth’s office with hands on her hips and raised eyebrows.
She knew exactly what she had meant. In fact, she knew the consequences on the back of her head when she first signed that contract with her publishing company. Two more books were requested of her. Or else she would be evicted of her apartment and be forced to live along the streets of Saint Denis for the rest of her life. A life of luxury slipping between her fingers.
“Yes, ma’am,” Mary-Beth disclaimed, the moment her editor slammed the door as she left her office. Heaving yet another exaggerated sigh, she crosses her arms on the grand rosewood desk, flopping her head on top of it. “What am I going to do now…” She murmured into the crevice of her arms.
Mary-Beth was in the middle of a major writer’s block for a few months now. She lost sight of that imaginative space of hers, consisting of the most swoon-worthy romances to the picture-perfect life she portrayed through her characters. A part of Mary-Beth that her readers absolutely adored. But, her head was now a clouded space of everlasting void. It was difficult for Mary-Beth to come into terms of writing again, but she couldn’t quite identify what had put her into this position.
Once she gathered the courage to write again, it all came crashing down like violent tidal waves when she came face to the daunting blank page of nothingness —almost drowning her.
It was as simple as that. Come to work, have a cup of tea, sit down, and a blank page.
Every. Damn. Time.
Maybe it was because she was already nearing her mid-thirties, and she hasn’t found someone to sweep her off her feet. Maybe it was when she first held Tilly’s baby that she found the need to be a mother someday. Maybe it was the overwhelming response towards her writing, she felt the need to hide away into an abyss. Or maybe she couldn’t stop thinking about the time she had come across John again after so many years that the memories just come flooding back.
Or maybe, just, maybe. It was because it’s November.
The most dreaded time of the year. November, in which the seemingly fearsome Van der Linde gang had officially broken up. Guns were fired, ties were broken and deaths were grieved. An unforgettable, painful memory.
She would often think about campfire songs, the girls and, Miss Grimshaw’s constant nagging about undone chores. Oh, how best of friends Céline and Miss Grimshaw would have been if she had heard Mary-Beth had been slacking again. It was her coping mechanism, think more about the good times to get rid of the bad ones.
Mary-Beth remembered when she took in her hands at being a matchmaker. Prancing around the camp, she would eye her two best contenders. You and Arthur.
She knew from the start when you had laid your eyes on each other for the first time, she could see through the inexplicable connection in between. You were both extremely awkward when it came to small-talk or addressing each other as you walked by across camp. However, it never stopped Arthur to come to camp as soon as he could just so he could see you, even just for a second.
The conversation would often start with Arthur while on his way to Dutch’s tent,
“Hey,”
“Hey.”
“I’ll leave you to it then.”
“Yea sure…”
—and that would be it.
At the same time, every single day, at the course of sunset.
You poor socially inept fools.
Mary-Beth, Tilly, and Karen would always see the interaction happen in the middle of their afternoon chores. Grinning from ear to ear. They would elbow each other whenever there was something different about the correspondence.
One time, you would walk past him, suddenly kissing him on the cheek and scurrying away.
Arthur would stop in his tracks, stunned, with a hand-over where your kiss tingled on his skin. Then he would look back at you as you laid down, smiling to yourself against a tree with a book in your hands. And Dutch would yell his name, knocking him out of his stupor before he noticed he was staring for a little too long.
The girls would start applauding for your heroic performance, it was like a groundbreaking plot twist Mary-Beth couldn’t wait to write about when the idea came into mind.
The both of you were like a walking excruciating slow, slow-burn romance novel. That was when Mary-Beth would cue in her entrance as matchmaker as soon as the interaction slowly died down. Your story had to have a happily ever after in her book.
She would pester you and Arthur separately, mentioning each other’s names and slipping in hints of romantic intentions from the other side so the both of you can address whatever this relationship was.
Mary-Beth knew it was a mission accomplished the night Sean was rescued back to Horseshoe Overlook. When she stood aside of the camp watching Dutch and Molly ballroom dancing into the moonlight, she caught a glimpse of you and Arthur behind them. Running into the woods, hand in hand, giggling to yourselves like prepubescent teenagers.
After that night, it was a considered job well done when your chance encounters slowly turned into planned ones. He would take you on dates, and you would show him affection like nobody’s business. A perfect couple, your American dream.
Until it became a nightmare.
And Arthur had passed,
your Arthur.
Ever since then, Mary-Beth wondered what had happened to you. Were you still alive after all these years? She couldn’t imagine how hard you must be coping with the news. Or what if you didn’t know at all? Even when she asked John and Tilly, they said you disappeared that night he passed.
Not even a single trace. Where were you?
Mary-Beth dismissed the thought out of her head, lifting her head away from the desk. She had to let go of these memories for her own well-being. For what seemed like yesterday were merely years ago. But it couldn’t have hurt to reminisce just a bit, for old times sake.
The story of You and Arthur was unwritten, left to collect dust from the lack of content. The perfect example of a sepia-tinted photograph, forgotten. Mary-Beth believed the both of you deserved something much more than a devastating ending. She wasn’t as ruthless as the other authors she had met that held an iron fist when killing off their characters. Mary-Beth wasn’t like that.
And the idea came to mind. She was a romance novelist for a reason; to fulfil all the possibilities for the unconditional love you shared.
And so Mary-Beth picked up her beautiful fountain pen,
She began to write on the great desk in her quiet room.
To write the most beautiful story of the century,
You and Arthur. Arthur and you.
A perfect couple. The American Dream.
A life that could have been so much more,
A life to remember…

Bioshock characters as Ghost and Pals songs
Jack: Amygdala Rag Doll
“I don't know where the thoughts are coming from pull my strings and swallow ichor”
- Yknow cuz Fontaine had control over him, the whole song just reminds me of him tbh
Tenenbaum: The things I deserve
“The source of misery is infused in flesh and bone and all these horrid mistakes from deep within will be”
- She feels horrible for making the little sisters by the time you play Bioshock and all the pain she’s caused
Eleanor: End World Normapathy
“The core of my design
Your eyes look down at mine
It never truly ends
As metal breaks and bends”
- Eleanor was controlled by Lamb and she was born to become a “savior” and she didn’t want to
Lamb: Colorbars
“And in a moment you will notice nothing’s quite the same when my COLORBARS are mixing frequencies turn the signal down and spin around in the opposite direction and now, will you please applaud?”
- Kinda reminded me of when she started taking control over rapture and people started to “worship” her or whatever
Delta: The Distortionist
“Madness, it’s madness
Oh, it’s sickening
It’s sickening
You know
It’s unfair, it’s unfair
How you distorted my reflection
In all this madness”
- he got turned into a big daddy against his will, therefore “distorting” his reflection even after he got turned back to human
Sinclair: Black & White
“I’m truly sorry, but things have changed
You’re not the girl I used to know
It’s killing me
And in the depths of my memories”
- He was the reason delta got turned into a big daddy and he feels horrible about it that’s why he helps delta get Eleanor back and escape, I dunno that’s what I thought of
Mark: Housewife Radio
“Seven a.m is when the station plays its sounds
Listening to the speaker while the patterns sew into place
Out of misery, he'll return alive”
- this poor man just wanted his daughter only to find out she got turned into a little sister and then he got fucking killed, housewife radio reminded me of him because I’m the song she’s in denial about her husband being dead and in bioshock 2 he is looking for his daughter and then got killed
Porter: Black & White OR Housewife Radio
“I’m truly sorry, but things have changed
You’re not the girl I used to know
It’s killing me
And in the depths of my memories”
Or
“And in the depths of my memories,
your stories echo from the past
Because your fears caught up with you at last”
- Okay sorry for repeat but both Sinclair and Porter reminded me of this song but of different reasons. Porter reminds me of this song because of when he tried making the thinker just like his dead wife pearl
“Out of misery, he'll return alive
His colors ought to show again-“
- Another repeat with Mark and Porter but Porter reminds me of Housewife radio because he did the thing with the thinker because he was sad about his wife and just wanted to at least think he was with her for just a bit- only made things worse
Gil: Rotary Dial
“Time and time again again I’ll only speak to you
And maybe you should give me back the love I gave to you
I’ve given up on any kind of hope that’s left for me
The wires on the telephone are tangled around me”
- He really liked Lamb only to be turned into a monster by her. He sacrificed his life for lamb by going through with the experiments and she left him to die “for the family”
Fontaine: Scapeg0at
“Come forth and kill me
Bow down and worship me
Take your time all we have is eternity
Now with a new start
Broken and torn apart
Nothing in me resembles a human heart”
- He pumped himself with Adam and basically became a god yknow. He was wasn’t human anymore and he made himself like that to kill Jack and take over Rapture
Lucete: The Chattering Lack of Common Sense
Rosalind: “Basically, I bet you'll see
At first, I'm not quite what I seem
Everyday is just the same
Picking names, repeating faces”
Robert: “Nonetheless, we're all the same
There's many things from where we came
Show a smile we're rather bored
Nothing lines up anymore”
- you know that whole thing about them with the different realities and shit, that’s what it reminds me of with “repeating faces” and “nonetheless, we’re all the same”
Grace: Appetite of a People Pleaser
“I need a whole personality
Something inordinately sweet
Order anything you’d like
Nothing’s changing my mind
I don’t care how unhealthy it is
‘Cus there isn’t anything I’d rather be”
- Grace just wanted to be a mother and stuff, she wanted to please the people (mostly Lamb and Eleanor) she just wanted to be approved of by Sofia by watching over Eleanor while she was away but ended up losing Eleanor sometime later
I’m gonna make a list of Ghost and Pals songs that remind me of Bioshock 1 and 2 character (maybe with the Lucete too) because they both infect my brain right now.
I’ll probably put the lyrics that remind me of them, I’m not gonna go by the lore of the song just of what reminds me of them :)
