Pairing: earlyseasons!Spencer Reid x hotchner!fem!reader Summary: You pull away from Spencer because of your jealousy. You go back to him after a few drinks in. WC: 9k A/N: fluff! pining! idiots/friends to lovers! alcohol consumption; spencer is a bit mean; reader doesn't communicate; hotch is a little older to have a daughter around spencer's age (do not come at me this is fiction). If I missed anything, please let me know! I had so much fun writing this one and it's now one of my favorites <3 masterlist
The jet was quiet as you and the BAU team made your way back from Los Angeles after successfully finding Lila Archer's stalker. The case had been a bit draining, after all, you've only been working with the FBI for a couple of months, and seeing dead bodies and all those other displays of violence was something you were still trying to get used to. Despite your sensitive nature, being Aaron Hotchner's daughter meant that you had mastered the art of a poker face through the years, not that it meant that your inner feelings were any less important. This is how you found yourself sitting all alone in a corner of the jet as everyone minded their own business. On any other day, you'd be sitting next to Dr. Spencer Reid, talking about whatever it was that could get your mind off the case you had just wrapped up. Spencer and you were friends, some would even say the best of friends, but you didn't mind about naming things — what mattered the most is that you got to be yourself around him and you didn't bother hiding behind the Hotchner glare, as he once put it.
Despite being unknown territory for you, after all, feelings and all that were protected by a deeply analytic and practical mind, you knew what you were feeling. Well, you were analyzing your reactions to check what had actually happened — and the thing is, you couldn't admit, not even to yourself, what that sinking feeling in your chest when you watched Spencer saying goodbye to Lila was. Amid your analysis, Spencer quietly approached you, silently motioning to the seat next to you. You nodded, shutting every single thought of him. Or at least, trying.
"Hi."
Hotch glare. "Hi, Reid."
Spencer felt nervous. He had never been on the receiving end of your… wrath before, so it was unknown territory and he didn't know how to act. His racing heart and clammy palms weren't helping him, either. Taking a deep breath, he said, "Listen, um, you... can... can we talk?" The stammering. Way to go, Spencer.
Glancing at him, ignoring the skip in your heartbeat, you nodded. "Yeah. Is everything alright?" A firm, secure tone. You mentally patted yourself on the back.
"You're a little distant... and—and I got a bit worried. Did... Did something happen?" He wanted to kick himself. What kind of person can't hold a serious conversation without stuttering like an idiot? Get a grip, Reid.
"No, Reid. Everything is alright. I'm just... thinking." You said.
Bullshit. You both knew that. Spencer, on the other hand, didn't know why it was bullshit. But he knew it was.
"Are you sure?" He asked, leaning towards you, almost invading your personal space and he shut his eyes before delivering the next question, "Is... I haven't done anything to upset you? Right?"
You took a second to answer him, willing your voice to stay still and the knot in your throat to go away. "No. It's nothing you've done. It's just... it's on me." You gave him a small smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes — that's when he knew something was definitely wrong.
He nodded, but he was still worried by your sudden change of behavior, especially towards him. It was like he was anyone else, again. And, God, he didn't want that. "What is it, then? You can talk to me, you know. We're best friends."
Best friends.
The words felt bitter on his tongue. The sound of them broke your heart all over again.
Best friends. "Right. Yeah. I know." You said, quietly, and it felt a little lifeless to him. He clenched his hand, fighting the urge to touch you, to ask you what was truly bothering you. "Thanks for offering."
Spencer felt conflicted. If he didn't say anything and didn't push you to speak, you would probably bury whatever it was that you were feeling and it would lead him into being even more worried about you. If he did, you would probably snap at him because of his undesired, bothersome insistence. "It's nothing." He said, defeatedly. "Can you just... Do you promise it's not me?"
Your heart ached and you smiled at him, a tiny, faint, barely there smile. He was so adorable, sometimes. "I'm just upset over something else. Don’t worry. You didn't do anything wrong." You finished, trying to convince yourself that he had not, indeed, done something wrong.
And he didn't. He didn't. You and Spencer, despite your proximity and sometimes incredibly ambiguous relationship, hadn't said anything about deeper feelings towards one another. You let yourself admire him, lovingly, from afar, and were happy with the snippets of attention you had from him when you two had some free time. You two were regulars in the coffee shop near his apartment and, by now, the local librarian, Mrs. Jones, could probably fake your signature from how often you two went there to borrow books. She would watch you two behind the bookshelves, whispering excitedly and curiously to each other about whatever suggestions you were getting from each other. As you missed Spencer's longing glances to read a summary, Mrs. Jones smiled to herself, both at how adorable you two were and how oblivious you were. In museums, you would sit down after some time walking around to his explanations of art and historical movements that impacted the expression of a certain age — you pretended to not know a few things, just so he could speak his heart away and not be interrupted by your own contributions.
You kept silent to make him happy.
Which was exactly what was happening now.
Spencer knew, for sure, that you were hiding something from him. But he also knew that he had no right to force it out. He fidgeted awkwardly, not knowing what to do with his hands, his heart still clenching. “But, but... you’d come to me if you needed help, right?”
You nodded, unable to speak. You knew you were wrong, omitting things from him. Just as the guilt was starting to weigh in your heart, Derek passed by you two with a magazine in his hands, throwing it at Spencer, exclaiming, "My man!"
You looked down, already knowing what it was. Spencer was a mess beside you: blushing, stuttering, avoiding your and Derek's gaze and throwing the magazine as far as he could, like it had burned him. Your reaction was a subtle twitch of your lips, not in amusement, but in need to disguise the pang in your heart. You both spent the rest of the flight sitting in silence, simply being in each other's orbit. You, guiltily. Spencer, worriedly.
Your reaction — or lack of — was staggering to Spencer. He thought you two were getting somewhere, despite your closed off nature and demeanor, he thought he was finally cracking you up. Everyday was torture, seeing you walk through the bullpen's glass doors with your professional clothes and your composed figure. It was torture to see you walk around so prettily and serious, holding his bare heart in your hands, and not even realizing it. By now, he lived and thrived on those rare opportunities you had to spend time together as he became more and more covered in you.
As the jet landed and Spencer walked out to talk to Derek, you pettily made sure to step on Lila Archer's face when leaving the jet in sheer frustration.
Back to the bullpen, you had gone to the restroom to splash some water on your face in order to calm your nerves and to tell yourself that it was only a matter of time until things got back to normal — until you got back to normal. Glancing at your reflection in the mirror, you wondered if Spencer could tell that there was something wrong with you, if you had let any of your feelings slip during your short conversation. The version of you that stared back was as impassible as you ever were. As you made your way to your desk in the dimly lit sea of desks, you caught Spencer and Derek talking, both having their backs to you.
Sighing, you just left the headquarters, not wanting to know what they were discussing, or rather, knowing what they were discussing, but unwilling to stay, even if it would quench your curiosity as to what Spencer had been thinking.
Maybe you didn't want to know the answer.
The days went by, cases coming left and right, flights making you almost dizzy — not that you would admit, but you were terrified of heights. Between those and your training, you barely had time to think about Spencer and the entire Lila occasion. You spent your days busy with work, studies and physical training in order to keep your mind away from that, but as you lay awake at night, the memories would come back to haunt you relentlessly to the point you had recurring dreams of them. Together, as you watched from the sidelines. You kept to yourself, slipping further and further away from Spencer.
Reid, on the other hand, felt your absence more than anyone. You took a rain check on all the invitations he made, even when he invited you to movie night, when he would definitely choose a Russian movie because you mentioned once how you liked how the language sounds. There wasn't any more donuts on his desk as he arrived in the morning (he would always joke that you and your father secretly lived in the headquarters and that someday he would see Haley bringing your groceries to the secret house), and there was no one for him to throw his paper airplanes, small flashcards with the Russian phonological alphabet, at. The change in your behavior was absurdly clear to everyone: you barely called or texted him anymore, you didn't look his way when someone told a joke to check if he thought it was funny... He was sulking, to say the least. Upon questioning you, you blamed your lack of free time and as he was going to question you further, you said in a teasing tone that not everyone was like him and that the FBI was actually making you go through all the training phases.
Finally, during the end of a particularly frustrating workday, he finally snapped, grabbing your arm before you could enter the elevator. It was only you and him in the otherwise empty hallway. "Ok. What's been going on? And don't," he said, closing his eyes, "don't dance around the subject. Don't say it's the Academy. Don't say you have to work. Don't. Please, be honest with me."
The exasperation in his eyes and in his tone almost broke the wall that hid your true feelings, but as you glanced at him, you figured you couldn't do it. Be honest? What for? To hear that you're nothing more than his best friend? Losing said friend was not an option, not to you, at least. But you also knew that you weren't treating him right, that keeping him out was not at all fair to him, that leaving him in the dark was as hurtful as it would be to lose him.
Breathing deeply, you answered with the same stoic expression you wore every single damn day. "I told you, Reid. People go through different, busier times in their lives." The lie tasted like acid.
Spencer clenched his teeth, frustration and confusion beginning to override some of his social anxieties. “That! That!” He asked through clenched teeth, his gaze intense.
"That what?" You asked, puzzled.
"You... you stopped calling me 'Spence'—not that you did it often, you did it more when we were all alone, and it... it sucks! It sucks because I don't know what happened or what I did that was so wrong to make you stop liking me!"
Come on, just say something! Get angry, get sad, get something!, his mind screamed.
"I never stopped liking you," you said, looking away from him. His words hit a particular spot that you were totally willing to discover later, but the mere thought that he knew that you liked him more than as a friend made you shiver.
"That's not the point! Or—or rather, it is! Because if you didn't stop liking me, why would you act like you did?" He asked, his tone rising a bit.
"Calm down."
"Calm down? I will not calm down!" He almost yelled. His eyes widened slightly, disbelief clear in his features and tone, not to mention the frustration. "Just. Please.” He said, closing his eyes, willing himself to tone it down, not that it worked... “Tell me what you're thinking, what happened to you! For once! Any normal person would react and stop acting like an emotionless robot!"
You gaped like a fish out of water, taking a small step back, his words digging a hole in your heart. Upon hearing his own words and noticing you distancing yourself from him, all the anger vanished from his body. The widened eyes were a sign of realization of what he had said to you. During the early months of friendship, you had confided in him that you struggled with portraying emotion like others normally did. Maybe it had something to do with growing up with a father who did it so perfectly when he was out of the house. When he wasn't actively playing the ‘dad’ part, Aaron Hotchner would wear an unreadable mask like it was his armor, his defense from the outer world, but as soon as he got home, he was back to his main role. You would watch him with his coworkers and mimic him perfectly to make him laugh. At some point, making fun of and imitating his demeanor had become some serious form of self-defense for you. Spencer, then, joked that you were making your way to the perfect job, but then he had gotten serious and told you that it wasn't a flaw. That it wasn't a problem that you kept deeply to yourself sometimes — that it was okay to be yourself around him. You had felt safe by his side since then.
But now, what did those words mean? Were they lies?
He breathed out your name, softly, "I... I... I'm sorry."
"Just drop it," you replied, pushing the elevator button. Your dismissive tone and your action of leaving made Spencer feel utterly desolate, like he had done the wrongest thing in the world and perhaps he had, but he just wanted you to let him in. For once, he wanted to have the answers from your lips, not spend any more time analyzing your every single action and words...
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..."
"You know, Spencer…" he looked up at you when he heard his name, as you held out an arm to hold the elevator doors open. As if thinking better than to say anything, you sighed and turned to enter the elevator, shaking your head with the most disappointed look he had ever seen on your face.
Spencer tried looking at you one last time before the elevator doors closed, and despite your face being as unreadable as it often was, he saw a flicker of sadness that stung his heart more than he liked to admit. If he hadn't done anything wrong before, now he had utterly fucked everything up.
The drive home, for Spencer, was a torture. He knew that he had to pay attention to the road ahead of him, to the other vehicles and drivers, but his mind kept drifting to the last glimpse of you back in the headquarters. Your empty eyes appeared behind his eyelids every time he pressed his eyes closed. He willed himself not to cry, to not blur his vision, taking his frustration out on the steering wheel, where his grip was so tight that his knuckles turned white. As he parked his car and looked up to one of his windows, he remembered you. Because of course he would remember you.
The sight was almost comical, to be honest. You, clad in one of the suits that fitted you so well, sitting on his windowsill, a cup of green tea in hands as you stared out the window, trying to analyze every single drop of rain before it reached somewhere outside your vision range. The funny thing was that you had no shoes on, instead, Spencer lent you a mismatched pair, not being one used to having people over, he didn't have a pair of spare slippers. Then, you sat there with a dinosaur-pattern sock on one foot and a striped-pattern sock on the other.
Spencer, sitting on his sofa and holding his own cup (he had let you choose your mug and stayed quiet when you pointed quietly at his favorite), smiled to himself. It was weirdly calming seeing you out of your character, doing something so... human.
"I can feel you staring, you know," you said. And your tone was almost... teasing?
"Right. Sorry." He said, looking down at his steaming tea.
"I'm not scolding you," you said, turning to look at his direction with a grin.
"Right, no—heh..." he replied, bashfully, cheeks reddening at the sight of your smile.
If only you knew... how many hours he would lay awake at night, as thoughts swirled in his head, how everything seemed to shut down at the thought of you. How he would fall asleep to the wish of being on the receiving end of one of your rare smiles, how he appreciated that you were always the first one he talked to upon his arrival at the headquarters. How... how he would do anything for you to look at him under a different light.
Seemingly out of nowhere, you giggled. Everything stopped.
Spencer.exe has stopped working.
"Heheh—I guess... It's not everyday you get to see a Hotchner so out of its—heheh—habitat." You quipped, looking at him with a smile on your face.
Suddenly, Spencer lost his voice. The connection between his brain and his tongue, which felt heavy, disappeared. Completely speechless, eyes slightly wide at the sound of your laughter. It made you laugh a bit more, but when his stare and open mouth got too much to handle, you looked down at your feet, wiggling your toes to distract yourself from the intensity of his gaze full of awe. Then, Spencer got back to his senses, smiling at you as you missed it to look away in embarrassment.
Spencer blinked away the tears and left his car, entering his apartment. As he took off his shoes, he let the tears fall at the sight of your windowsill.
Meanwhile, you were getting wasted at some bar. Not just any bar, but the one you usually went with Spencer when you were feeling daring and wanted a change from the places where you both used to go to. You were a bit of a lightweight, so a couple of drinks were enough for you to start playing trivia with Spencer and let your gaze linger for longer, basking in the sight of him so carefree, having fun with you.
Upon your arrival, the bartender that usually took care of your orders, MJ, greeted you with a smile. When she saw no one was joining you, she frowned. "Good evening, Hotch. Where's loverboy?"
You sent her a look, but since you were letting your guard down, after all, there were no acquaintances or friends around, you didn't know if the look came out as a glare or if you looked like a kicked puppy. She snorted. "Gee... That bad, huh?" She asked, and you didn't answer again, though you muttered a soft thanks, MJ when she gave you your go-to drink.
And it turned into two drinks. Three. Four...
(MJ was now giving you alcohol-free drinks, too worried for your well-being. You and Spencer started to grow on her as you two kept coming back.)
You rested your chin on your left hand while you traced patterns with your right index finger on the counter. MJ was eyeing you suspiciously, drying a few glasses with a washcloth. "He kissed another girl." You admitted, quietly.
"No way." She gasped.
"Way."
"But... I thought you two were a thing." MJ was baffled, placing down the objects she was holding in sheer shock. "I always thought you two were like... together for years."
"We were a thing.... I think, at least... I don't know, MJ." You sighed, tucking a stray of hair behind your ear. Looking up at her, hazy eyes taking in her focused expression, you sniffled, "we were on this case and then he met a girl and then the next moment the two of them were making out in a pool. In a freaking pool."
She tsked, anger flashing in her eyes, "I swear, those nerdy guys are the worst."
"Yeah..." You muttered, fiddling with your straw. "Can I have another one?"
She pursed her lips, but she relented. Then, as she handed you the liquid, a guy sat next to you. Did he look like Spencer or were you already hallucinating?
"Hi. I'm Dave. Can I buy you a drink...?" He asked with a small smile, wanting to know your name.
No, not Spencer. It’s cool.
"Hi, I..."
MJ cut you off. "Hey, Dave, I think she had too much to drink already."
They exchanged looks and it took you a minute to feel offended by her interruption and knowing you were perfectly capable of speaking for yourself, but realizing you would probably have to entertain a stranger, you felt grateful for it.
Dave left with a sour smile. "Thanks." You muttered, again, looking at MJ.
"Do you need me to get you a cab, honey?"
"That would be great." You said, placing money bills to pay for your drinks and the tip.
MJ looked around to spot someone to keep an eye on the bar as she led you out of the place, hand never leaving your shoulder. As she called a cab, she made you stand on only one leg to make sure you weren't gonna need her to go with you. You scoffed, but obeyed her all the same, with a low snicker. As you two waited for the cab driver, a woman who MJ trusted with her life (and her favorite regulars), you tried to make conversation to make up for embarrassing yourself by talking about Spencer with someone. How pathetic.
"So, what does MJ stand for?"
She chuckled, shaking her head at you and at your dazed eyes. "That's classified information."
"I'm familiar with that."
The cab driver, Paula, arrived. She greeted the both of you with a smile and a cheerful good evening! As you entered the vehicle, you rolled the windows down and pressed the subject further, "Seriously, is it Mary Jane or were your parents more creative?"
She rolled your eyes at you, shaking her head. "It's Mary Jane. MJ because who would take me seriously?"
You smiled. "I like the shoes!"
Paula started driving slowly, just to let other drivers drop their own passengers, as you were lost in your own little world, serious expression taking over your face again, not wavering, as you delved deeper into the whirlwind of thoughts plaguing your head. Paula, looking at you through the rear-view mirror, asked, "Is everything okay, honey?"
You buckled your seatbelt. "Yes, yes. Just... keep driving slowly, please."
"Where to?"
Only then you realized you never gave her an address. Closing your eyes and taking a deep breath, you gave her Spencer's, telling her you were going home.
An unknown number had sent Spencer a couple of messages.
[8:32 p.m.] Lovergirl is here, drinking all by herself.
[8:32 p.m.] Water, but still. I'm not having her passed out without you here.
[8:40 p.m.] Sent her home, people were starting to approach.
Throughout the time he had spent with you at the bar, the two of you exchanged numbers with MJ in case she needed your help — you know, being FBI agents and whatnot. But Spencer didn't need to see her name to know it was her and she was talking about you; 'lovergirl' and 'passed out without you here' gave him clue enough. His stomach tied in knots when he read that people were starting to approach her, the nagging feeling that the image conjured in his mind was making him feel almost sick, then, it hit him like a truck: Lila Archer.
Their… case? was as fleeting as a careless glance. To be honest, Spencer accepted her advances to spite you for having such power over him, even if unknowingly so. The young agent felt like you were so out of his league, so out of reach — you were all that pile of confidence and stoicism and pure lusciousness and everything to him. And he was a young guy who truly had barely been kissed so far. How could he approach you, charm his way into your heart, especially when you barely bared it? With Lila, it was... nice. Easy, even. It was nice being wanted, to be able to read her intentions and desires like a children's book. With you, it was a tantalizing challenge, one he was, for the first time, struggling with. It was not like having a high-school crush, not like pining over the untouchable girls that would catch his interest as he grew older. No. This was something new. You had hit him deeper than ever or anyone before.
Plus, as much as he hated to admit it, he gave room to the anxious thoughts regarding your father as well. Would it affect his relationship with his superior? Would it affect your relationship with your father? Spencer felt dizzy just by the mere thought of ruining something uniquely yours. No, he couldn't impose himself on your life like that. It was mean, it was wrong, it was immoral.
To want, to desire, is to be selfish.
It was a bold assumption. To think you were jealous of him. Nevertheless, the signs were all there, had been all along. He was just dumb and scared enough of making assumptions.
A barely there, faint sound of a knock on his door made Spencer fly out of his bed, dropping his phone on the bedroom floor, but he didn't pick it up. He had a suspicion as to who could be knocking on his door, but he was too scared of assuming anything. Again. Opening the door, he saw you, breathing a bit heavily. The stairs, he supposed. You always complained about them. Once you exchanged looks, Spencer’s surprised one and your earnest one, you asked, "Do you really think I'm a robot?"
Shit. He could feel his heart breaking in a million little pieces. The insecure edge of your voice and words made him squeeze his eyes shut; in his mind, he was kicking himself simultaneously as he sank down to his knees, on your feet, begging you to forgive and forget his dumb, stupid, frustrated, unrealistic words.
"No," he breathed out, wincing, almost as if he was in physical pain. "I—I didn't mean to talk about you like that. I was..."
"Frustrated?"
He nodded, silently, eyes never leaving your face. Your speech, albeit way out of the ordinary that he was used to, was flawless. If not by the dilated pupils and the faint smell of alcohol, not to mention MJ's texts, he would dare to say you were perfectly sober. "I was, too." You admitted, looking down.
Spencer made way for you to enter his apartment. He watched as you kicked your shoes off. The sight, that had become as common as the act of breathing, made his way flutter. You intended on staying. Or so he hoped. You walked further into the place, noticing everything as it ever was, as if you hadn't been to his apartment for some time now. "You must be thinking why I'm here," you said, moving to sit on the couch and mentioning him to sit on the small coffee table in front of you, as if you owned the place, and not him.
Perhaps it was true.
He closed the door once you were inside, hesitating for a moment before joining you. He kept noticing things about you; the way you were walking, the way you could barely look him in the eye, the way you looked… “How much did you have to drink?” He asked, quietly.
"Not much. You know I don't usually drink because I can’t hold my drinks. And I'm sure MJ was giving me plain water at some point." You said, looking up at him. Well, at least, your speech flawlessly delivered, even though you were moving a bit more… disoriented than usual. She's totally a Hotchner.
"I... I am," he started, sitting in front of you carefully. "I... I'm sorry. It's just... You've never been so distant. I guess that I was mean to you to elicit some reaction."
Your analytical gaze softened upon his confession. You needed to give him some break, be a little easy on him. Well, easier than you were being as of lately. Nodding lightly, you added, "I'm here to apologize, too. I know... I know that I pushed you away and I made you think that... that that was your fault. It's not."
He froze. No, he wouldn't have you taking the blame for how his actions caused you to react. He looked up at you, reaching out a hand to touch your intertwined ones, "It is."
"Hear me out. Please." You said, lowly, not breaking eye contact. This was so hard, and you had never felt so afraid before. How ironic — to be afraid of being brave. "I... I guess that by now you know why I pulled away."
"I do," he admitted, nervously. "It took me some time, but I... I think I figured you out."
You looked down, embarrassed. It was overwhelming for him to see you portray such different and so many emotions all at once. To you, it was as agonizing as it was freeing. "Well, yes. So... It, um, it wasn't fair. We... we are not something. We are not a thing."
His heart, doing all the thinking and feeling, nearly stopped. As if it wasn't enough, you kept on going, "I'm sorry, I truly am, for how I behaved and how I made you feel by being absent. It's... it's not my place. You have your own life, Reid. I can't be upset with you for making decisions. You're a grown man..." you sighed, glancing at every direction but at him. "I know that I'm wrong, okay? And I know that I shouldn't have pushed you away, nor should I have kept my feelings from you."
Spencer drew in a long breath. He didn't know what to say, but you couldn't be more wrong. All at once, he wanted to scream, but he didn't know what ro say; he wanted to run, but he didn't want to leave you alone — not for a second. He didn't ever want you out of his sight; he didn't want to be the one you were apologizing to, hell, he wanted everything to be okay between them, but it was nice that she was talking to him, finally.
"I..."
Every time he thought he could say something, words failed him. Then, you took it as another opportunity to word-vomit everything you've been feeling. "I was... I was jealous. I didn't like to see that. I didn't like that it happened. But I also know that I have no right to be upset with you because you're single and she's attractive and you're both consenting and willing to do whatever you please, so..." You shrugged as if speaking those words aloud didn't stab new holes in your heart.
Spencer looked at you, totally speechless. It made you snicker. And speak further. Shut up, you idiot. Please, please, please! "And, ah—hahahah—I guess I am, indeed, a bit of a robot because it took me a bit of alcohol to pluck up the courage to come here and totally—hic—destroy our friendship by telling you I love you so much; that I'd hate to see you with anyone other than me. It happened and I hated it. It still stings."
Spencer's heart threatened to fail once again. Your giggles, your words, your confession... His mind completely short-circuited. She loved him. She loved him? She loved him?!?!???!!! That’s what she’d just said, apparently. Okay, calm down. And she’d been jealous. She didn’t like him kissing another woman, because she fucking loved him. Say something, you dumb idiot, his brain shrieked. Say something!
You parted your lips to say something else, but apparently decided against it. Another beat of silence of Spencer staring dumbly at you. "I'm going," you blurted out, standing up.
Spencer, at breakneck speed, stood up as well to stop you from walking away, placing his hands tentatively on your shoulders. Your bodies were now apart by mere inches. "No." His voice was so small and pained that you sat back down.
Despite your apparent willingness, your next words told him about your turmoil. "Why would I stay, Spencer? I've been pouring my heart out to you and you haven't said a thing."
Looking at you, so bare and so vulnerable, Spencer suddenly had flashbacks from when he had lashed out on you earlier and simultaneously fought the feelings that were bubbling inside of him upon your confession. Couldn't you see the sheer shock on his face? Couldn't you see that he was battling against every single bit of self restraint not to pull you into his embrace and make you believe him when he would tell you that you were the only woman for him?
Sure, he had dreamed of you saying those words to him countless times as time went by and you two got closer. Shit, he literally dreamed of it. Of you. Speaking sweet nothings to him... He broke out of his daze, realizing that he was deadly silent, "Don't go..."
"Then say something. I'm here. Not as Hotch's daughter, not as your coworker, not as a part of the team you work with. I'm here as the woman in whose heart you've grown over the last few months. I'm terrified of your answer and you keep depriving me of it." There was a hint of annoyance and hurry on your voice, and he could understand you, he truly could. He just didn't... he lost his voice when he looked at you.
Saying your name softly, he beginned, “I said stupid, untrue things, and I’m sorry. I’m a jerk, and I know that I’m a jerk and—" You quirked your eyebrow and he took a deep breath, trying to cut his rant. "Just... don't sit there and think that I have nothing to say."
"Have you said it?" You pressed it, quirking an eyebrow.
"No." He admitted, widening his eyes a bit as he realized his mistake.
At the same time, you shot, "Not saying something is also an answer for me—"
"—but not for the reasons you're thinking! Do you know how hard it is for me right now?" Spencer was starting to sound very desperate and pathetic, not to mention the fact that he wasn't answering your questions.
Deep breaths (from both ends).
"Look, Reid..." He glared at you upon hearing his last name. "I think I should go home. You and I clearly need some space—"
"What we need to do is talk."
You sighed. "Then why won't you give me an answer?"
Silence.
"You won't even remember this in the morning."
At that, you deemed yourself utterly defeated. This was useless. "I'm sorry I came over. I'm... I'll just go, okay? Please, don't be upset about tonight. I apologize in advance."
The sight of her, once more shying away from him and turning to escape from him, was making Spencer frustrated, with himself, to no end. His heart clenched at your apology, to which he shook his head vehemently. The thing is, he wanted to get ready to answer you, properly, just like he always had some trick up his sleeve or some funny or curious fact to blurt during the most random moments. Spencer was good at speaking, but only when the speech was already ingrained into his mind, something he had read or rehearsed before. Plus, he was sure your state of drunkenness would stop you from remembering that moment.
Spencer dashed to his door, barely stopping you. No, no, no, no, no... She can't leave. This might be my only chance. "You're not going anywhere."
"Excuse me?"
"Stay with me. I don't want you to go." He said, softly, slowly, looking straight into your eyes. It made you dizzy. Either that or the alcohol.
"No?"
"Y-you're drunk and I... I don't think it's safe for you to go by yourself and it's late and... and..." he trailed off, nervously, desperate to get you to stay.
"I'm not drunk."
"You're not fooling me. You might be as concise as ever but you're not sober. Stay."
"Promise... promise you won't be upset with me?"
His heart dropped, heavy with guilt. And with love for you. "I promise."
Spencer silently led you back to the couch, gingerly holding your hand. He felt dazzled, speechless, desperate, frustrated, all at once. But your touch was starting to ground him back to reality, where you were real, having confessed your feelings for him, and he was a mess, not even being able to say anything back. Without much thinking, he said, "You should stay over tonight."
"Okay... I'll take the couch."
"As if I'd let you sleep on the couch."
"It's okay."
"Stop... stop acting like I sent you away."
You kept silent. You felt like he did. Through his touch, he hoped to get you to understand that his feelings were a mess, but they existed, and they were real, and they were yours. "That'd be alright with me, you know. Taking your couch. I think I would sleep better on your floor than I would ever in my bed. To... to say that anything is better if you're somehow involved."
His stomach made a flip-flop. Brain short-circuited again. You yawned, as if you had just made an annoying comment on the weather.
"Are you tired?" He managed to mutter.
"I am."
"Come on. Let's get you to bed."
"No."
"What do you mean 'no'? I'm not letting you on the couch. Come on."
"I can't go to your bed with outside clothes." You booped his nose.
He chuckled lowly, confused a little by your words. "Are you seriously worried about clothes?"
"You don't like germs. That's why I removed my shoes."
Okay, he thought, if I manage to put her to sleep without having a heart attack, I definitely don't need a cardiologist's appointment because it would mean I'm that strong.
"Y-you... remembered?" Damn it, Reid. Stop stuttering.
You sighed, tiredly, and rested your head on his shoulder, looking down at his hand holding yours. "I remember everything about you."
"You do?"
"Yes. Fortunately or unfortunately."
Spencer was too stunned to speak. Too stunned, too dumb, too afraid. Damn it. Damn it. He couldn't stop cursing internally. He forced himself to pull you towards his bedroom and even though he still sensed some uncertainty, he kept going. Reaching for a pair of sweatpants and a big t-shirt, he gave those to you. "You can change into these," as he left the room to make you more comfortable.
"Wait!" You almost shrieked.
"What happened?" He prompted, worriedly, reaching a hand out to touch your arm.
"I don't want you to go."
He bit back a sigh. "I'll be just outside."
"Just... stay here?"
"I can't—" he interrupted himself, just turning around so his back was to you instead. At that, he looked up at his ceiling and prayed to any deity to let him survive that night.
He could hear the sounds of your movements. The zipper being undone, the soft ruffling of the fabric as you tugged your shirt up your head... He was imagining your exposed skin, every perfect inch, how would you look without all those clothes that suited you so nicely, how would it be to touch you, to run his fingertips all over your heated skin, how would it be to kiss every freckle on your body, to—"Done."
Turning around, the sight was adorable, which made him somewhat guilty of his early impure thoughts. "I feel like Alice when she shrunk into a tiny human."
He couldn't fight the smile at your words. He led you to his bed, where you laid on your back on top of the covers, staring at the ceiling. Spencer left you briefly to get you a glass of water and some painkillers to leave by the bedside table. You thanked him with a silent glance. As he turned to leave, once again, you said in a small voice, almost phrasing it like a question, too afraid of the answer. "Stay."
"I'll take the couch."
"You asked me to stay, thrice, I guess… And I did. I asked you once and you did. I still have a few requests left. I'm keeping tabs."
He relented, laying next to you and placing a pillow between you two. You breathed out a chuckle and he shook his head, clearly knowing where your mind had gone to. He placed his hand on top of the pillow, offering his comfort, and then you tentatively placed yours on top of his. He grinned to himself.
It was hard for him to wrap his head around what had happened that night. He knew his words — or lack of — could be read the wrong way and you possibly did, but he also hoped that his actions were speaking louder. Just as he was getting lost in thought again, he heard your voice once more.
"Spence?"
That damned nickname.
"Thanks for, um, being so respectful. Not that I don't think you'd be. But, um, as you've said, I'm drunk. And I told you I love you. And you're simply holding my hand." He gulped. He was keeping count, too, of how many times you said you loved him. Twice, so far, but he wanted so much more, endlessly. He wanted to lose track. "I guess... that makes me love you even more," you finished, crushing his heart between your palms, voice thick with sleep.
When he finally turned his head to look at you, your eyes were closed and you looked peaceful, drifting off to sleep. Then, when he was sure you were actually asleep, he stood up from his bed, grabbing a pillow and a spare blanket to lay on the floor.
"I'll gladly sleep on my floor if it means I get to have you around, too..."
Spencer didn't get any sleep.
He tossed and turned on the floor all night long, both because his carpet was not the most comfortable spot to sleep on, but also and mostly because there was no way in hell his mind stopped working. All through the night, Spencer fought the urge to shake you awake to ask if this was real, if you really loved him, if the words that slipped through your lips were in fact your feelings towards him. Despite his curiosity and eagerness, he let you sleep, figuring that he had already put you through too much already. As you slept, a movie played on his mind: your moments together, your confession of love, and overthinking the words we are not something. We are not a thing. He feared that you would wake up and realize how badly he had screwed up and decide not to want him anymore. Yes, he was that anxious.
You, on the other hand, even though confused by his lack of answer to your heart’s words, felt lighter than ever by speaking out your truth (the booze did help you a lot, though). Being as analytical as you were had its perks. One of them is that you never let yourself suffer too much for too long, too attached to reality to care much about the rest. So what if he rejected you? Life goes on — and that’s what you thought with every other loser that you caught yourself thinking too much of. Spencer, though… Who were you kidding? Spencer was Spencer. And that meant the world… It wasn’t so bad, if he actually rejected you… you’d only have to face him every day, until the rest of your lives, doomed to work together, cursed to think and rethink all over again small, fleeting moments such as an exchange of longing glances.
(You felt strangely calm due to your touch with reality. Maybe, just maybe, you were hoping for the best based on his care with and for you. But boy, were you ready to give him a piece of your mind.)
As your eyes fluttered open, you stretched your limbs on an unfamiliar bed with too much space. Upon your confusion, the memories came back with full force. You jolted, sitting down, searching for him — and, to be honest, not wanting to find him. The house was deadly silent, so you tried to trick yourself that you were sure he wasn't there. You dashed to the bathroom, taking a quick shower to get rid of the shame and the faint reek of alcohol. As you moved around his stuff, you couldn't help but think that you were so familiar with his things that it was almost like you belonged there. Sigh. It turns out that hiding emotions is easier than feeling them, especially their extremes.
As soon as you finished putting on your own clothes, you stopped dead in your tracks as you heard footsteps outside the bedroom. You froze, not knowing what to say. Or do.
Spencer entered the room, holding a tray meticulously organized with some food on it. “Morning. I, um, made you breakfast.” Because of course he would make you fucking breakfast.
“Morning,” you replied awkwardly and hoarsely. Maybe you cried a little bit, who knows… “Thanks, you didn't have to.”
“I did.”
You take your time to get a good look at him. He had bags under his eyes that appeared to be tired. The sight made your heart drop. “I'm sorry…”
“Don't be.”
“But I was wrong.”
“So was I.”
“But—”
“Last night you said some things. Do you, uh, do you remember what you told me?” You nodded, unable to speak. “Do you remember what you told me?” He repeated, trying to get a verbal answer from you.
“Yes, Spencer. I remember.”
“Can you listen to what I have to say now?”
You nodded, weakly.
“I didn't say anything because… because everything had gone in the most opposite direction they could've gone.” He said, approaching you calmly. “I was up the entire night, hoping to find the right words to tell you that would make you believe me after I… was stupid. I… First, I'm sorry I made you feel that way. I know you said that we're nothing, that we weren't something, that we didn't have anything… but… but you're everything to me.” At that, your eyes finally met his. The intensity of your gaze made him shudder, but he kept going. “All the time we've spent together was nothing compared to what I want to have with you… and… and… God! Do you have any idea of the torture I was put through with you? Constantly thinking of what we could be, what we should be, too scared of your reaction or that—that—that Hotch decided to chop off my neck because he found out that I was crushing on his only daughter!”
At the mention of your dad, you burst out laughing. Seriously? That was such a cliché! “Hey! I'm serious!”
“I'm sorry…” You bit your bottom lip, fighting the urge to laugh at him some more. He was adorable.
“As I was saying,” he continued, trying to sound annoyed, but a hint of a smile threatened to break on his lips, and he didn't pull away when you approached him nor he did when you wrapped your arms around his waist, resting your chin on his chest, looking up at him, adoringly. He looked down, meeting your gaze,  “I… I love you. I love you too. God, it just feels so good to say that!”
You giggled, again. God, he could never get used to that sound.
“And I’m sorry for being so mean to you when I was frustrated. I should have been more patient and my unthoughtful words hurt you.” You kept silent, remembering his words. “I—I’ll spend the rest of my life apologizing if you’ll have me.” He added, intimidated by your gaze.
Silence. “Well, I accept your apologies. I was unfair to you as well. And you know where I stand when it comes to you. My feelings, I mean.”
“I do… But…”
“But?”
“I'd like to hear you say it.”
“Say what?”
“That you love me?”
“I don't know. Do I, really?” You joked.
He blushed furiously, ready to stutter himself out of that situation. “No, I mean… you—you said that—that you remembered what you said last night and… so… putting two and two…”
Another giggle interrupted him. You traced his jawline, leaning up to kiss his right cheek. “I really, really love you.” A kiss to his left cheek. He chuckled. “I love you.” A kiss on the tip of his nose, to which he snorted, totally lovestruck. “So much.” A lingering, tender kiss to his forehead. He closed his eyes, already anticipating the next spot you would press your soft lips to.
As you made your way to finally kiss his lips, you decided to tease him and let him wait for a bit longer. Spencer groaned in protest and you chuckled a bit, finally deciding that it was enough. Pressing your lips to the corner of his mouth, making him sigh, you were thrilling on making him more and more eager. His grip on you tightened just slightly as he let out a shaky breath. You wanted to laugh, but instead, you poked fun at him. “Now you know what it's like to be teased.”
“I love you. Oh, Jesus… You're driving me insane. You're here… And you, you're you…”
You grinned, looking up at him, finally, finally pressing your lips to his. As you let out a small sigh, his breath hitched, both of you utterly drowning in relief and satisfaction. You pulled back a bit, grinning, going back to kissing him. Spencer's hands found your jawline, sliding back to tangle in your hair as he sucked your bottom lip into his mouth. Parting your lips slightly, you granted him full access to kiss you properly, and he moaned at the taste of you, gripping your hair rougher than before. You groaned softly, and he proudly heard and swallowed all your small sounds.
The ring of a phone broke the urgent atmosphere that was building between you two. Spencer ignored it, letting it ring until you pulled away, gasping for air. As you did, the noise stopped and you met his lost eyes, totally dumbstruck, and you laughed because you probably looked the same way. He gave you a charming, lopsided grin, too stupid, too hypnotized to say anything.
The phone began ringing again. “Son of a…!” he cursed, picking up the phone. “Hi, this is Dr. Spencer Reid and unless this is an absolute emergency, I'm kinda busy—”
“Reid.” Aaron Hotchner's firm voice hit Spencer like a bucket of cold water. Widening his eyes, he gulped.
“Yes… sir?” You smiled at that. Of course you knew who he was talking to.
“We have a new case.” Hotch announced.
“Oh… okay… I, um, I—I'll be there in 20.”
Silence.
“Is everything okay, Reid?” Hotchner could read anyone, Spencer was now sure of that. Even through the goddamned phone.
“Wh—yeah, yeah… Everything's… totally f—fine.” He cursed under his breath as you gripped his vest, trying not to laugh.
“Do you know where she is?” Hotch inquired after another moment of quietness.
“Who?” He squeaked. You chuckled silently.
“My daughter.” Of course it was his daughter.
Playing dumb is not a good look on you, you mouthed.
“N—no… I haven't… heard from her.”
“Sure.” Hotch said, skeptically. Spencer could feel the sweat on his forehead. After a moment, your father finished the call with an unreadable “We need to talk.”
Once the phone call ended, you burst out laughing at Spencer's reaction. “Not funny.” He protested, a frown on his face and a soft smile betraying his faux frustration.
“Come on, it is funny.”
He glared at you. “What do you think he wants to talk about?”
“I don't know. Men talk. I wouldn't want to get involved.” You said, grinning, pulling him by his vest.
He squeezed his eyes shut, relishing in the feeling of having you so close. “Do you think he knows?”
“Of course he knows.”
“How are you so collected?”
“Because I'm not the one he's going to scare to death, apparently.”
“He said ‘we’ need to talk. Emphasizing ‘we’. If he knows you’re here, then it probably—” you cut him off with a kiss.
“Well, then… Are you ready to face your biggest fear? The frightening Aaron Hotchner?”
Glancing at you adoringly, he chuckled. “I’d face him and whoever, whatever, a thousand times, if it meant that I could get you in the end.”
A couple days after the case, you and Spencer meet again, in your apartment. Sitting down on the couch, you ask him, amusedly, “Do you think he noticed?”
“Totally. I could barely look him in the eye for the first moments,” He said with a fond smile, hiding from you the fact that he had awkwardly and bravely spoken to your dad about your relationship. You laughed, placing your legs on the top of his legs. “I guess we should thank Lila, after all.” He joked, and you laughed out loud.
Leaning him closer to him, grabbing his chin and looking deep into his eyes, you muttered, “Don’t ever say her name again, Spence.”
Your wish was always his command. It would always be.

The sound of the door slamming reverberates through the mansion, shaking the antique fixtures on the walls. You stomp into the grand foyer, your heels clicking sharply against the marble floors, your anger palpable in the air. Lando's sharp voice follows you, his British accent more clipped than usual.
"Don't you dare walk away from me, love!" he barks, his footsteps quick behind yours.
You spin on your heel to face him, eyes blazing with fury. "What do you want me to do, Lando? Stand there and listen while you talk to me like I’m one of your employees? Like I’m beneath you?"
His jaw tightens, the muscles working as he clenches his teeth. He’s wearing that infuriatingly expensive suit you helped him pick out, and right now, you’d love nothing more than to rip it off him—not in the fun way. "I don’t treat you like my employees," he growls. "But I am in charge, and you seem to forget that sometimes."
You laugh bitterly, crossing your arms. "Oh, how could I forget? You love reminding me every chance you get."
Lando rakes a hand through his perfectly styled hair, messing it up slightly. Normally, the sight would make your heart soften, but right now, it only fuels your fire. "You’re being unreasonable," he snaps. "We had an agreement—"
"No, you had an agreement!" you interrupt, your voice rising. "I never agreed to this ridiculous, controlling nonsense, Lando."
His amber eyes flash dangerously. "Watch it," he warns, his voice low now, like a storm about to break. "You’re pushing me, and you know I don’t like being pushed."
But you’re too far gone to care. "And I don’t like being treated like some trophy wife who needs to follow orders. I’m done with this conversation."
Without waiting for his response, you grab your purse from the console table and march toward the front door. His voice chases after you. "Where are you going?"
"Out," you snap. "Don’t wait up."
Before he can stop you, you’re out the door, the evening air cool against your flushed skin.
The mall is your sanctuary. Under the glow of bright lights and the hum of happy chatter, you lose yourself in racks of designer clothing, rows of shoes, and glass cases of sparkling jewelry. Lando's black card burns a comforting weight in your purse, and tonight, you intend to make full use of it.
You start at Chanel, swiping the card for a pair of heels and a matching bag without so much as glancing at the price tag. Next is Cartier, where a sleek watch catches your eye. After that, you make your way to Dior, where a silk gown feels like the perfect antidote to your frustration.
Each purchase soothes the ache in your chest, replacing anger with satisfaction. By the time you leave the mall, your arms are laden with bags, and the backseat of your car is filled to the brim with boxes and tissue paper.
But your phone buzzes just as you’re pulling out of the parking lot. You glance at the screen and see Lando’s name flashing. You don’t answer.
Back at the mansion, Lando is pacing his study, his phone pressed to his ear. The man on the other end clears his throat nervously before speaking. "Mr. Norris, this is Daniel from Barclays. We’ve noticed some unusual activity on your account and wanted to confirm if your card has been compromised."
Lando pinches the bridge of his nose, exhaling sharply. "What kind of activity?" he asks, though he already knows the answer.
"A series of high-value transactions," Daniel replies. "Chanel, Cartier, Dior... altogether totaling a little over seventy thousand pounds. Should we freeze the card?"
Lando smirks despite himself, shaking his head. "No, Daniel," he says, his tone resigned. "It’s just my wife... throwing a tantrum."
There’s a brief silence on the other end. "Ah," Daniel says finally, clearly unsure how to respond. "Very well, sir. Shall we flag the transactions as authorized?"
"Yes," Lando says. "And don’t call again unless it’s life or death."
You return home hours later, your anger dulled by exhaustion and the satisfying sight of your new purchases. You push open the door to the mansion, your arms laden with bags, only to find Lando waiting for you in the foyer. He leans against the staircase, his arms crossed over his chest, his sharp features unreadable.
"Have fun?" he asks, his voice deceptively calm.
You ignore him, stepping past him with your head held high. But before you can make it far, he grabs your wrist, stopping you in your tracks. His grip is firm but not painful, his thumb brushing against your skin.
"Don’t ignore me," he says softly, dangerously.
You whirl around to face him, the fire in your eyes reigniting. "What do you want, Lando? To scold me for spending your money? Go ahead—I’m sure you’ve got plenty of lectures lined up."
He doesn’t rise to the bait, his gaze steady on yours. "It’s not about the money," he says. "You know that."
"Then what is it about?" you demand. "Because I’m tired of fighting with you over every little thing."
His jaw tightens, and for a moment, he says nothing. Then, finally, he speaks. "It’s about us," he says. "About you running off every time we argue instead of dealing with it. You think throwing my money around is going to make things better?"
"It made me feel better," you snap, yanking your wrist out of his grip.
"Fine," he says, his voice cold now. "If that’s what you want—things, clothes, jewelry—then take it all. But don’t pretend it’s going to fix what’s wrong between us."
His words hit harder than you’d like to admit. You stare at him, your chest heaving with the effort of holding back tears. "Maybe if you treated me like your wife instead of your possession, we wouldn’t have these problems," you say quietly.
Something flickers in his eyes—guilt, maybe. But he doesn’t respond, and you don’t wait for him to. You turn on your heel and head upstairs, leaving him standing alone in the foyer.
Hours later, you’re sitting in the walk-in closet, surrounded by your purchases. The excitement you felt earlier has faded, leaving behind a hollow ache. You sigh, running your fingers over the soft fabric of the Dior gown, wondering if you went too far.
A knock at the door startles you, and before you can respond, Lando steps inside. He looks tired, his tie loosened and his hair disheveled. In his hands, he’s holding a small box tied with a black ribbon.
"I brought you something," he says, his voice soft.
You raise an eyebrow. "More things? Haven’t I spent enough of your money today?"
He ignores your sarcasm, setting the box down on the bench beside you. "Open it," he says.
Curious despite yourself, you untie the ribbon and lift the lid. Inside is a delicate necklace, a simple gold chain with a tiny heart-shaped pendant. It’s nothing like the flashy pieces you bought earlier, but somehow, it feels more special.
"It’s not to bribe you," he says quickly, as if reading your mind. "I just... I wanted to remind you that I don’t care about the money or the fights. I care about you.“
You look up at him, your heart softening. "You have a funny way of showing it," you say, though your tone lacks its earlier bite.
He kneels in front of you, his hands resting on your knees. "I know," he admits. "I’m not perfect, and I don’t always know how to handle you when you’re upset. But I’m trying, love. I promise I’m trying."
For a long moment, you say nothing, letting his words sink in. Then, finally, you reach out and cup his cheek, your thumb brushing against his stubble. "I’m sorry too," you say. "I shouldn’t have stormed off like that. It wasn’t fair to either of us."
He leans into your touch, closing his eyes briefly. "So... we’re okay?" he asks, his voice tentative.
You smile softly. "We’re okay."
The next morning, you wake up to find Lando already dressed, his tie perfectly knotted and his usual confidence back in place. He leans over to kiss your forehead, his lips lingering against your skin.
"Breakfast is ready downstairs," he says. "And I told the bank not to call me again if you go on another shopping spree."
You laugh, pulling the covers over your head. "Good. Because I might need a few more things."
He chuckles, his hand brushing against your hair. "Just try not to spend the GDP of a small country next time, yeah?"
You peek out from under the covers, grinning. "No promises."
And for the first time in days, everything feels right again.

♡ a/n — for my new childhood friends to lovers series :)
♡ word count — 1.5k
♡ content — oliver aiku x fem! reader, fem! reader, could be gn but i wanted to be safe in case i missed a few pronouns, childhood friends to lovers, mention of social media hate, goes from 2nd grade to the U-20 game, nickname 'my girl' used once
♡ synopsis — You’d been Oliver Aiku's best friend since you could walk, but what if you wanted to be more?
Tumblr media
Oliver Aiku had always been larger than life. Even as a scrappy little kid on the soccer field, he had this magnetic pull that made you look at him twice. It wasn’t just the way he played—wild and relentless, like the ball was an extension of himself—it was the way he owned the field, every inch of it.
He’d score a goal, throw his arms in the air, and spin to face the crowd as if he were already playing in a packed stadium. The parents on the sidelines clapped politely, some shaking their heads at his showboating, but you? You clapped the loudest.
Parents exchanged awkward glances, but none of it ever phased Oliver.
He had you.
You’d been his best friend since you could walk—your families were next-door neighbors, practically an extension of each other. Whenever someone had enough of his showboating, he’d turn to you with that unshakable grin.
“You saw that, right?” he’d call out, jogging over to where you sat with your knees pulled to your chest.
“Yeah, Oliver, I saw,” you’d reply, trying and failing to hide your smile.
“That’s why you’re my favorite,” he’d say, tousling your hair before running off to join his teammates.
Back then, he didn’t care who was watching or what anyone thought. It was enough that you were there, your laughter and cheers louder than everyone else’s combined.
By middle school, Oliver had grown taller, his voice deepening as his grin remained the same. He still played soccer like the world depended on it, but something else was changing, too.
Your classmates whispered in hallways about who liked who, notes were passed in class, and suddenly everyone seemed to be holding hands. Oliver wasn’t immune to the wave of adolescent curiosity, but unlike the others, he approached it with the same fearless energy he brought to the game.
He started dating casually, his charm drawing girls in like moths to a flame. Each week, there was a new name, a new story. You’d sit on your bedroom floor together, him tossing a soccer ball from hand to hand while you half-listened to his latest escapades.
“She dumped me,” he said one day, catching the ball and staring at it like it held the answers.
“Why?”
“She said I didn’t text her enough,” he replied with a shrug.
“Did you?”
“Nope.” He tossed the ball into the air and caught it again. “Too much effort.”
You rolled your eyes but laughed anyway. It was impossible to stay annoyed with him for long, but something about these conversations left a knot in your chest. You weren’t sure why until the day he turned to you, his grin soft and sincere.
“Hey, if you’re feeling left out,” he said, “we could date.”
Your heart stumbled in your chest. “What?”
“I like you,” he said, as if it were obvious. “If you like me, let’s try. You’re the only person who actually gets me anyway.”
The words hung in the air between you, so simple yet so earth-shattering. You liked him—you always had—but the thought of crossing that line was terrifying. Still, the way he looked at you, so sure, made it impossible to say no.
But it didn’t take long for you to realize you weren’t ready. The idea of ruining what you had—the easy laughter, the shared history—was too much.
You barely managed to hold his hand, let alone anything else. So you broke it off before it could go any further.
Still, Oliver didn’t hold it against you. “You’re my best friend,” he’d said. “That’s never gonna change.”
And he kept his word. To this day, you were the only ex Oliver Aiku had ever stayed friends with.
By the time high school rolled around, Oliver was no longer just a neighborhood star. He was the Oliver Aiku, soccer prodigy and the center of every conversation. He’d grown into his confidence, wearing it like a second skin, and the world couldn’t look away.
Everyone wanted a piece of him—teammates, classmates, even teachers. And though he still found his way to your side, leaning against your locker or texting you late at night, the space between you began to grow.
“I miss when it was just us,” you admitted one afternoon, your voice barely louder than the hum of the vending machines outside the gym.
Oliver tilted his head, his brow furrowing slightly. “What do you mean? It’s still us.”
But it wasn’t. Not really.
You didn’t say that, though. Instead, you smiled and nodded, trying to ignore the ache of watching him move further into a world where you couldn’t quite follow.
You tried not to let it bother you, the way girls flocked to him in the hallways, the way his name was always on someone’s lips. You weren’t invisible, not really, but compared to him? It felt like you were.
Still, Oliver always made time for you. You were grateful for that.
“You’re the only one I can actually talk to,” he said, making it clear there's a reason it's always been you two. “Everyone else just wants to hear about soccer.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Maybe that’s because you never shut up about it.”
He grinned, nudging you playfully. “See? That’s why I like you. Low maintenance. A good friend.”
For some reason, the words stung. You’d always been friends—why did hearing him say it now hurt so much?
When Oliver got his first pro offer, it should have been the happiest day of his life.
He found you immediately after practice, bursting through the door of your part-time job at the library with his usual uncontainable energy.
“I’m taking you out,” he declared, practically dragging you away from the returns cart.
You laughed, stumbling after him. “Shouldn’t you be with your family? This is a huge deal!”
He shook his head, grinning. “I have all the time in the world with them,” he said, flashing you a grin. “I’d rather be with my girl.”
You froze. “I’m not your girl—”
He cut you off. “Do you want to be?”
The air shifted between you, heavy with something unspoken. This time, you didn’t back away.
The words lit something warm in your chest, and for the first time in years, it felt like things were back to the way they used to be. Just you and Oliver, like always.
Oliver’s first season was everything you’d hoped for him. His name was everywhere, his skills celebrated, his confidence unmatched. When the season ended, he posted a picture of the two of you on Instagram—a soft launch for some, but for Oliver, it was a declaration.
“First year down, forever to go,” the caption read.
Some assumed he was talking about soccer. You knew better.
But by his second season, the narrative had changed. His performance wasn’t as sharp, at least in the eyes of fans and reporters. Every missed pass, every fumbled play, was scrutinized. And somehow, the blame landed on you.
“She’s a distraction,” one reporter wrote. “He was better when he was single,” another said. “With that woman clinging to him, he won’t make it in this industry,” a coach even said during a press conference.
Your social media became a war zone. Strangers flooded your posts with hate, blaming you for Oliver’s supposed “decline.” You tried to ignore it, but the words stuck to your skin like thorns.
The U-20 loss was devastating, the kind of failure that sent shockwaves through his career and his psyche. When you found him in the locker room after the game, he was a shell of himself, his usual confidence replaced by simmering frustration.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he muttered, not meeting your eyes.
“I wanted to see you,” you said softly.
He let out a bitter laugh. “Yeah, well, maybe that’s the problem.”
You froze. “What are you talking about?”
“You,” he snapped. “I should’ve listened,” he continued, his tone venomous. “Everyone warned me, but I was stupid enough to think you wouldn’t ruin my life.”
You'd fought before, what couple hadn't but, you ruining his life? "I've been friends with you basically your whole life!" you argued back, fists clutching at the 'Aiku' jersey that adorned your torso.
No matter what you said, Oliver wasn't listening. “You’ve been nothing but a distraction. Ever since we got together, everything’s gone to shit. My career, my focus—it’s all your fault.”
The words sliced through you, sharper than any knife. “Oliver, that’s not fair—”
“Fair?” He laughed again, harsh and hollow. “What’s fair is that I gave up everything for this, and I’m still losing. Maybe if I hadn’t wasted so much time with you, things would be different.”
Your breath caught, tears blurring your vision. “If that’s how you feel, then I should go.”
“Maybe you should,” he said, his voice cold and final.
So you left.
The weeks that followed were unbearable. You deleted your social media, unable to face the onslaught of strangers blaming you for Oliver’s mistakes. Everywhere you went, you felt like a ghost, haunted by his words and the memories of what you’d shared.
You wanted to hate him, to let his betrayal harden your heart, but the truth was, you missed him.
And deep down, you wondered if he missed you too.

im so happy youve given permission for people to draw their tavs and durges with your beefy drow haha. hopefully that applies to ocs outside of bg3 too?
and im curious for the sake of the sketch im doing, you got an ask awhile back about how dudrow might react to a nonbinary drow and your answer was really interesting. im curious if thats changed at all or if you have any other ideas about it?
im currently sketching dudrow with my oc who is a nonbinary drow for fun, and thinking about what kind of connection they might have.
so far the sketch is just dudrow and nb drow, both with hand on hip poses, just kind of standing there evaluating each other. but i plan to have that sketch as a first meeting sort of thing, then do a follow up of them either as friends or... maybe more, if that would be allowed...
I can't stress this enough, you can draw DU drow with whoever you want and doing whatever you want, I'm just happy to see other folks drawing him at all! No rules there save for what is common sense.
If I recall correctly, my answer back then was somewhere along the lines of "he doesn't get it, and it's weird enough that it gets you the benefit of doubt". That while he would likely suspect that, lets say, a male-to-female drow woman would only transition for her own social benefit, that a nonbinary drow would be shooting themselves in the foot too much for him to justifiably believe them to be duplicitous (since, at least in the "cultural canon" that I personally subscribe to, there is no way a nonbinary drow could be out and functional in drow society; so they would HAVE to be an outsider - and unlike most times, DU drow might just believe them at semi-face-value this time.)
This has remained unchanged, I think. DU drow knows how important gender (well - sex, in this case, I guess) is in their culture, and while men and women have their place in it, as unbalanced as it may be, that's a step above someone who refuses to partake in gender at all or constantly falls outside of it. They're kinda fucked of their own accord and he can weirdly respect that.
And, just to clarify, this perspective applies ONLY to the drow race. DU drow is truly indifferent to gender and all it's implications otherwise.
Anyways, thanks for the question and I hope this was helpful!

I don't know why Tumblr decided years later to tell me there is a response to me for this post. But since I see your response now, it is only fair I give a full response in return since I did not address some things in my short reply.
Regarding your comment on Anakin having not seen Palpatine for years, that is actually not true. In canonical comics and novels, we know that the Jedi allowed Palpatine to be a mentor to Anakin since he was a young boy. They have interacted numerous times for years, and this is why by the time of Attack of the Clones, Anakin and Palpatine already have a relationship, why Palpatine says "your patience has paid off" and Anakin answers "your guidance more than my patience". Because they have been interacting, because Palpatine has been whispering in Anakin's ear for years.
Now again, this is not to say that Anakin can't be responsible for the choices that he does make. But we can't ignore that Palpatine actively manipulated, exploited, and groomed Anakin. And that influence does matter in the context of this story. This isn't just Anakin on his own going off the handle, this is someone for whom life has already been a struggle, who already feels isolated even among his fellow Jedi and then Palpatine comes in to carefully and slowly over the years pouring fuel on the fire before it becomes an inferno.
And as for Padme's reaction to Anakin's revelation about the Tuskens, she was shocked, she was clearly thrown off, but note that she takes a moment before she considers her next words, because she can see that Anakin is crying, upset, and clearly feeling conflict and guilt over what he did. So yes, she says to be angry is to be human, because saying "You're insane!" is hardly going to actually resolve this situation. This isn't Anakin all proud and happy going LOOK I KILLED ALL OF THEM! If that was the case, then yes, Padme's reaction would not be appropriate. But Anakin wasn't proud, he was angry, he was upset, he even says he should have behaved better than what he did. It's clear to Padme that Anakin recognizes the wrong in what he did, but he lost sight of that in the heat of moment because of the murder of his mother. And sure, we see the signs as an outsider with a clear perspective, but there is a reason that people within a relationship has a harder time seeing things clearly. To Padme, she is seeing that young boy who was a slave torn away from his mother, she is seeing and understanding where that rage and anger would come from, and she is seeing that he feels conflicted and guilty, not proud. So she tries to help, she tries to de-escalate. She also wants to see the best in Anakin, the same way that we all want to see the best in the people closest to us.
And in any case, whether Padme and Anakin would have had a happy future with the twins, it doesn't change the fact that they deserved a chance, they deserved a chance to figure things out and have a life with their children.
---------------------------
And regarding your other comments in the original post. I wanted to address some things.
I really find it distasteful to compare two women through saying one is better because she was willing to die to have a child while the other couldn't stay alive for her children. It oversimplifies a lot of things, particuarly regarding emotional trauma, and it is blaming Padme for her own death. It is in many ways painting a woman as vapid and shallow for dying of a "broken heart" instead of being alive for her children, and then effectively implying that it makes her a bad mother and that's why she doesn't deserve to have her children with her and they should be raised by someone else. Maybe you don't mean to come off that way, but it just comes across as very unsympathetic to the ways emotional trauma can affect a person. Someone losing the will to live after being dealt with a huge emotional trauma (the collapse of her entire world, both everything she fought for and the life she wanted with Anakin and their family) does not mean she was choosing to just abandon her children. And having seen people waste away and die because of "heartbreak" from losing a partner, as silly as that might seem to some, it's not something people just choose to do (like depression) or that they just up and decided to abandon their other loved ones, including kids because they weren't fighting hard enough for them to stay. Trauma doesn't fit in a neat little box with a rule book, and the way you have framed Padme's death in this as a negative mark against her just rubs me the wrong way.
As for Bail not being able to stand up after being told his daughter was killed versus Anakin torturing Leia, this is just missing the context that Bail knew it was his daughter and Anakin didn't. If Anakin had still done torturing even though he knew Leia was his daughter, then this comparison would be more valid and fair.
And as for "Breha and Bail put themselves in danger by adopting Leia selflessly" - I'm not saying they didn't do a good thing or that it wasn't dangerous, but it also wasn't entirely selfless. They wanted a child and they got one. It would be more selfless if they had not intended to have any kids but took Leia in anyways. Ultimately, this opportunity gave them something THEY wanted.
Lastly, I'll just reiterate what I said before, both sets of parents are valid, and Breha and Bail clearly did a great job raising Leia, as Owen and Beru did for Luke, but Leia and Luke clearly also did inherit good qualities from their biological parents, qualities that both sets of adoptive parents nurtured and helped to blossom, qualities that ultimately led them to saving the galaxy. I would never want to remove Breha/Bail and Owen/Beru from Leia and Luke's lives, but I would also always stand up to say that Anakin and Padme deserved a chance to have a life with their children. Maybe it wouldn't have been a perfectly idyllic and romantic life, but they still deserved a chance.
"Anakin and Padme deserved to raise their twins"
Breha Organa literally suffered at least 5 miscarriages and was willing to die for her children, and almost die with her last miscarriage.
Bail Organa literally couldn't stand up straight after being told her daughter was killed.
Breha and Bail put themselves in danger by adopting Leia selflessly.
While:
Anakin murdered women and children BEFORE Palpatine's manipulation and his fall to the dark side and tortured his own daughter.
Padme not only didn't care Anakin killing children, but she die because she was heartbroken after Anakin turning bad, leaving two babies who needed her.
NO, I WOULDN'T CHANGE BAIL AND BREHA ORGANA AS LEIA'S PARENTS FOR ANYTHING

Turning Point - Part 5
Characters: Poly!LADs x gn!mc
Warnings: Hurt/Comfort, Injuries, Angst, Loss of Arm, Lots of emotional struggle with disability, mentions for Rafayel stories, and myths, violent imagery and arguments.
Word Count: 5456
Written: 9th January 2025
Notes: Pre-relationship with gn!MC with all LADs, with my personal pov of the game and lil headcanons littered in. Unnamed MC, but using my personal MC's basic appearance and adjusted backstory. I take some liberties with what the game offers me. Rafayel is so hard to write for a lot of reasons, but also is one of my favourite characters in any story because he's just... contains multitudes. I also feel like he's the one who struggles most with all these other people in MC's life. I also feel like he's so fixated on pain, and struggle, that he forgets kindness can be offered to him with no price. Anyway, I enjoyed working on this bit a lot even though it was hard. Enjoy! Also as a side note, the song of choice I can only partially explain, Rafayel out of all the boys makes me think of regency romance on a level I truly cannot explain. (even though he doesn't have a dancing scene... YET!!)
Now Playing: All I Want, by Kris Bowers
Masterlist AO3
<- Previous
Rafayel loves you. That is never in doubt. He finds himself bitter and aching that there is so much you have shared that only he remembers.
Sometimes it comes out in harsh words or lies. Even though he knows it is unfair to punish you, when you can't control it.
Mostly, however, he tries to enjoy moments with you. Hoping that something will spark, and you will look at him and see long years of history.
Remember his longing and his love in all its forms.
Remember all the facets that make him up. Perhaps it's cowardice to want your memories to fill in the blanks that he is too scared to tell you. Blood on his hands, heart offered up. He does not want to see your expression change. For you to fear or hate who he is… who he can become.
He thinks about beautiful blue seas, and the breath stolen underwater.
When he finds himself thinking of the beach he waited at, every year, he pushes himself into his work.
Now, he spends most of his days at your side. In case you need him. He watches closely, because he's used to you hiding your struggle from him. When you're sick, you've hidden it, he's reminded you that you're not a superhero. As much as you put on a brave front for every kid that sees your hunter reels.
Rafayel has watched this version of you for a long time, before he finally met you again. Properly.
He has seen so many renditions of you, no matter who you have been… he has loved you. He has and will love you for eternity and beyond, even if it might be easier not to.
Rafayel has finished most of his work for his exhibit, as he stares at the final piece that is missing something that he cannot find.
Sun blends with sea, as the tides recede. As silver bones are left behind to bleach.
He stares and stares and nothing comes. Just that vague, irritating feeling of incompletion.
"You're going to burn a hole in it, fish."
"Sylus, leave the man alone, he's actually working."
Rafayel huffs… and therein lies his other problem. Your consortium of bizarre attachments. If he were less observant, he could pretend they see you as a friend only.
But he is a man who can kill another, who can plan his revenge, who can hide in plain sight. Who is capable of sneaking up even on the N109 Zone Leader.
So he can see and he can't ignore. He also can't ignore that they comfort you as well.
You have teased him for being childish, and he thinks the irritating feeling in his gut, that demands he steal all of your time, that you are his bonded partner, confirms such a claim. He is not possessive of a lot… your heart is his.
He tries to ignore the doctor and the crow. Staring straight ahead, hoping that answers will come to him, but he cannot. He can feel their presence and it is on the edge of his consciousness. Poking at it.
Like he is a crab on the beach and a child wants to watch his pincers clasp.
"Maybe you should take a walk, get some fresh air."
"Do you want the fish to suffocate, Doctor?"
"Truly, you are incapable of not prodding at others aren't you?"
He huffs this time, turning his face to look at the two. Zayne is typing on his laptop, barely looking up to converse, while Sylus is on his tablet, glasses on the end of his nose.
The two look eerily similar like this.
Rafayel tries not to compare the doctor to the crow, it's unflattering. At least the doctor can heal your wounds.
When he speaks though, his irritation comes out in the snippy tone he takes, "Your opinions are noted, dumb crow. Then swiftly discarded."
The man does that irritating little laugh he does, that is more a puff of air than a real laugh. Like it's too much effort to feel anything, and Rafayel wants to pluck his feathers.
How you can tolerate him, he'll never know.
At least the hunter is quiet…
Still, he wants to get out of here, they make it harder for him to think, and he can't make progress like this. So he stands, shrugging at them and heads towards the door, as he goes to make through he almost collides with you and Xavier returning from the hospital. He isn't surprised when you move out the way just in time, you're a hunter and your training has made you capable. Still as he greets you, you hesitate, before tugging at his shirt before he can leave.
He looks down, your hand holding onto the fabric, not tough enough to tear, but enough to halt his movements.
"Are you alright, Raffy?"
It shouldn't surprise him that you notice the tick in his jaw, or the stress under his skin. It isn't the first time, and you've shown many times to have been able to pick out when his mood has dropped. You're observant as part of being a hunter, you're careful, you pay attention. You're smart.
You care.
About him, about his mood… about his life. His irritation settles, soothes at the edges, and his smile is easier, "I need some fresh air. Want to come with?"
You hesitate and he watches the fear enter your eyes. Wavering. You walk between the hospital and the apartment when you don't take Zayne's car, but that's the extent of your journeys. He wants to pull you by the hand… make you see the sea with him.
"Where are you going?"
"Whitesands."
It's far enough removed, very few people visit it, and he will get a walk somewhere familiar. Perhaps it's familiar enough for you to follow him.
He extends his hand, carefully, trying to keep the need from bubbling to the surface. If he could take you away far from here, he would. Take you to everything he's ever seen, so he can see it with new eyes. Yours.
Your hand stretches out, and your fingers tremble, before you finally take his, "Alright, if it's quiet." Your request is one he'll happily grant. Both of you alone, he can't think of a better way to spend his time.
The walk is kind to him, as they head towards Whitesand Bay, he gets to keep your hand in his, listen to the song of the world, and watch as your steps become lighter. You stop staring down at your arm and checking around you, eventually focusing on the sky and him.
As feet crunch on white sand, and approach the edge of tides. You let go of his hand to walk a little further out, and he watches. As you crouch, as you reach fingers to the water.
Rafayel paints everything he thinks is beautiful, tragic, or brings pain to his soul. You hurt him too, in ways he aches for. Like he is placing his hand in a burning flame, and holding it there, because the longer he holds it, the closer he gets to what he craves.
Like there is an answer there, waiting over the edge of agony. If he tumbles after it, he'll find what eludes him.
There's a feeling in him that wants to drown you with him. He could swim out, with you in his arms, and pull you under. On the edge of the question of life, before he gives you the means to breathe alongside him. He's warned you of the nature of sirens, and you've looked him in the eye and told him you don't fear him.
You should, though, he knows. You should fear the ocean's grasp as well as his own, because he wants your heart for his.
As you turn your eyes back to him, soft smile tugging the scar on your face, his heart thunders and then stills. Flames and agony. The need to touch and hold it in his hand… Lit against the contours of your face, and the glimmer in your eyes.
His inspiration is always closer than he thinks.
—-----
Rafayel dislikes your companions.
The prince gets to spend all of his time with you, working together, protecting each other. Where Rafayel had to convince you to be his bodyguard, just for a fraction of that time.
The doctor is who you trust with your injuries and your wounds, he is who you go to when something hurts. You hid your sickness from Rafayel before now, so he didn't doubt your capabilities.
The crow… the crow gets under his scales. Like a tick. Biting and bleeding and ruining his skin. Yet you trust him, a man who built all his life on violence. Who has blood on his hands. Who is open about his sins… While he cannot tell you for fear of the look in your eye changing.
It is safe to say the crow is his least favourite. The one who grinds at him most, who plucks and pulls. Like a hook in his upper lip. He dreams of drowning the man… he would if the look in your eyes didn't stop him.
So he hates them, he thinks. The anger and irritation and the childish petulance. He wants your attention and he fights for it, he wants you to trust him most. It took too long to gain entrance into your home, reminding himself that time builds strong bonds. That he should be patient. He did not want to scare you, to startle you. Like you are a small fish and he is a bigger… hungrier beast.
There is no peace when they are around, and normally pain brings him inspiration, an answer on the end of a paintbrush. A vision in the agony.
Whatever feeling they inspire is not pain, and it brings him no art to create, no feelings to share in blues and greens. Nothing to show for it.
He has thankfully, however, finished his final piece. So there is a relief in him, even as the crow looks down at him, eyebrow raised.
Rafayel ignores the man, looking straight ahead, signing his work. Paintbrush steady. Steadier than the racing heart in his chest.
He will not lose a game of chicken with an overgrown bird.
So when the crow turns to walk away, he is relieved, and so smug, until he hears a crunch. Looking over quickly, and staring down at the floor.
"Ah, what a shame."
One of Rafayel's paintbrushes snapped in half by the stupid crow's foot.
He levels a glare at the man, "Are stupid crows clumsy too?"
"Are all fish messy? Your things have spread across the apartment."
"I'm working!"
"Quite diligently I see, despite galavanting off to the beach. Inspiration was it?"
The look on the crow's face is too level. It's too calm. He does not respond to the rise of Rafayel's voice. He does not flinch at the glare in his eyes. He does not move, from where his foot is still on his brush.
It is a feeling of irritation that burns and scorches where it stands.
He has to tolerate and bite his tongue. He has to think and be careful. He has to share, where he does not want to share.
You are his heart, why does he have to look at the eyesore in his vision, and think about his hands on you too.
His anger bubbles and froths and overflows. A pot that has been left, and forgotten. You will forget him too, in favour of a crow! A stupid. Foolish. Irritating crow.
He stands and presses forwards, fangs bared and sharp. He is a predator of the seas. This man is nothing. He is a god of the tides. This man is a petty criminal.
Rafayel knows you better, he has seen more incarnations than this man can even comprehend, and he dares to play at favour?
"If you wish to be drowned, crow, I am happy to oblige."
Eyebrow quirks at him, a look in his eyes that Rafayel can't make out, but it glitters and twinkles, "I'd love to see you try, fish, but I'm afraid you couldn't hope to kill me."
"I am more than willing to try."
"Then you'll simply be hurting your 'beloved bride', wouldn't you?"
He snarls, a low noise in the back of his throat, hand reaching out to grab at the man's throat. To snap it, bite through it, to cut his voice permanently, he isn't sure. It will hurt, and he will deserve it. For calling you what he cannot. Too many memories that you cannot hold in your heart.
The crow steps forwards, as if daring him to try. To wrap his hands around his throat and twist. To slice his throat open with a dagger. To see. To show him if it's true.
"Raffy?" Your call comes from the side, stumbling in, voice wary.
His hand hovers, he debates. Thinks for a moment. Stares at the crow's adam apple as the man swallows his laughter down. The dare is there, waiting for him to take… and they both know he won't.
So he rips his hand back, offers you the kind of smile that shakes at the foundations, "Hey cutie, I was just going out for the exhibit."
You open your mouth to speak, and he shakes his head, grabbing his canvas. Lifting it far too quickly to be safe, and turns on a heel, "I'll see you later."
The speed he leaves the apartment leaves the door frame shaking behind him. Heading out, running from the place. From the crow's dare, from the wary look in your eyes.
From the inadequacy… the guilt… the irritation. The pain.
What lurks over the abyss could just be nothingness. A world where you don't want him, or need him. Where without your memories you do not look at him, hear him call you his beloved bride, and love him as you once did. Where his bond with you is not enough, and he simply has to experience the heart that cannot beat for anyone but you.
That he has lied and hidden and kept from you for too long, that a criminal with blood on his hands who does not hide… claims your heart for his.
His heart…
There is pain behind his art and in his soul. A reminder that he cannot always be with you in every life, and he prays this is not one of them. An alter of suffering that he would cut his chest open at, if you would always look at him.
—--
You cannot stop thinking about the look on Rafayel's face. The agony in his eyes as he'd darted from the room. You'd asked Sylus who had shrugged, "I broke his paintbrush." But not explained further.
You'd seen Rafayel break his own paintbrushes in his studio, stepping on them, falling over them. Resulting in a trip to the hospital because of how messy things were.
You help Sylus clean up some of the mess, containing it in a corner with the rest of Raffy's things, hoping it would alleviate some of the feeling you can't seem to shake in the air. A stagnation. It feels like decay, and you can't open enough windows to air it out.
If Sylus decides not to share, he won't. You've known him long enough, pried at his secrets enough, that you don't waste the strength anymore. He shares what he wants, when he wants to.
So you abandon the effort and go about your day. It drags. Waiting for time to pass, working through your exercises, before you have to leave.
As the time approaches, the clock hand moving, it begins to click harder. The sound impending.
You think about other exhibits, the amount of people, the noise…
It cuts through the excitement, the peace of the wait, the boredom.
You pause as you're getting ready, staring at the prosthetic arm flexing in front of you. The movement of metal fingers, the clear indication of your injury… your failure.
You're going to see Rafayel. A man who people will be looking at. Commending.
Taking photos of.
Do you really want to be stood next to him like this? To draw attention to yourself and him?
An icy chill runs up your spine, and you stop. You have to get these clothes off. You have to cancel. You can't go.
You can't be there.
You feel the chain on your ankle, it tugs and it pulls, and it drags you back. The beast that settled, has woken up. It is hungry and it is angry, and it is laughing at you for trying.
A mistake, this was a mistake. You made a promise to someone you care about, and now you're going to hurt him. Either way, you're going to hurt him. Make him look stupid. Make him hate you.
You're going to break this fragile peace. Bring that agonised look into his eyes again.
Take from a man who gives you so much. Love, affection, kindness, warmth, acceptance, joy.
You are ripping all those things from his hands, and returning nothing.
"Kitten?" You stumble, when the voice startles you out of your thoughts. Falling back onto the bed, looking up as Sylus enters, not bothering to wait for an answer. Ever since your mission had gone wrong, he has been far less hesitant. If he could ever be said to be hesitant.
When he sees you sitting, tears in your eyes, he approaches you, kneels in front of you. Hands on your knees. Soothing your skin. His skin is so warm, it's like a brand. You almost pull away. On fire, itching, hurting. He notices your flinch and pulls his hands away. The relief of the cool is intense, and you choke on the feeling.
You're the mistake. Too fragile to be touched. Too useless to be helpful. Too much work.
He takes in your rumbled clothing. The shirt half pulled off, the jacket thrown away from you, the trousers unclasped. You are shivering, and shaking, and while you can see his hands twitching. Yearning, needing to soothe, he knows he can't. So he tries to speak, hesitant now, "Don't you like them?" You think about the time he spent, finding things with Rafayel that are easier to wear. Clasps that can be done easier with one hand, or buttons bigger for your unsteady metal fingers.
Things that require the least amount of struggle. If he could not find them, he had them made.
The two of them, you think as you try to fight through the fog, are dangerous.
You shake your head numbly. "I can't go."
It doesn't require much more from you, even without his eye, Sylus reads people. He reads you. He's said sometimes he cannot understand the workings of your mind, but he improves everyday. It is terrifying to be seen by him. Terrifying for him to look under the rough exterior, to the rougher interior.
You wait for the moment that he realises you're not worth it.
"You'll be with us." He starts, and you look down at where his hand twitches towards you, then back. "You won't be alone."
You haven't been alone, you think. In all the time you've spent with this. This weight, first on your back, then on your ankle. They have come to find you. Looking.
Just like Caleb did.
Is it enough? This could be that wakeup call.
"Rafayel wants you there, he's excited to see you." It is odd. It is hearing Sylus say 'Rafayel' and not 'fish', that jolts you back. Just like the moment you saw them in your kitchen, arguing. Just like when you saw them all walk through that door when the blanket was your only defence.
It is a realisation of how odd this is. How bizarre they are.
It almost makes you hiccup a laugh. The idea of Sylus speaking for Rafayel. You think about how warm he is to you, how he takes your hand easily.
I will always want to look at you.
"What if it's too much work?" You finally manage, the agony lightening so you can speak, no longer tearing at you. Though you can feel the creature on your ankle. Tugging. Like a dog with a chew toy.
"The important things are worth it."
Important.
Learning to use your prosthetic is hard. Learning to trust is hard.
It was with Caleb, it is with all of them. It is a constant struggle. A constant weight. To try.
They catch you, with a security net. Give you space to breathe, so you can stand back up again.
You think about what you want, think about what will make you happy… what is worth living for.
It is the reason to keep getting up.
You want to see Rafayel's work, you want to see the people you care about. You want to keep your promise to a man who values you. A hesitant shaky hand takes Sylus' where it hovers. The way you can watch him heave a sigh, the tension in him easing, as he clasps yours between both of his. Tight, but not suffocating. He grounds you, and it doesn't burn.
"What do you think, Kitten? Do you want to try?"
Sylus has never belittled you for tears, or made you feel your emotions are a mistake. When you are drowning, he offers a hand. When you anger and hurt, he is there, either to join you in your hurt, or to help appease it.
He offers you a choice, and he means it. If you truly do not want to, you know he will accept it. If you want to, he will help.
"I want to try."
He nods, pulling you up with him, to stand, straight into his chest. So that you can feel his uneven heart beating against you. "Then let's get you ready."
—-----
He should never have left so early. He should have stayed with you.
Rafayel left the apartment in frustration and anger and now he stares at his phone, hoping to see your name pop up.
It is an agitating feeling. To be stood on the edge of the cliff and not know if there's water below.
He has forced himself to listen to Thomas, to go through the motions, to ensure his exhibit is set up correctly. He has sat under too bright lights, feeling himself drying up, as he waits. As the clock hand moves, as he thinks, and he struggles.
If he keeps running, will you stop chasing him?
As his exhibit starts, he checks again, only to see a message from the doctor, 'Good luck today'. He doesn't respond. He stares at it. It's unsettling. He doesn't want the doctor to wish him good luck. He doesn't want his comfort.
He doesn't need it.
Even when his agitation settles a moment, and he hides it from Thomas who asks him why he's smiling. He's not.
That doesn't mean anything.
He does not wave at Xavier as he walks through the door, milling around the paintings quietly. Avoiding the bigger crowds. He tries not to think about the fact that he's come to see.
It doesn't matter.
As time passes, Rafayel fidgets.
Stares at the door.
Fidgets.
Stares at the door.
He walks around the room, passes Xavier, who hands him water quietly, then walks off. He stares down at it, but he's parched, the crowds are tiring him out, the people are talking like they understand him, and he just wants to be somewhere else. So he downs it, and lets the relief of the chill settle in his throat.
He talks absently to people he doesn't really care to listen to. Thomas gives him a talk about doing his duties.
Irritation settles in his stomach. He doesn't care about his duties. He cares about seeing you.
He checks his phone, and is relieved, though irritated, when he gets a message from the crow, 'We're on our way'. He sends back a thumbs up, though it is through a shaky hand. Excitement makes it unsteady.
It is when he is not staring at the door, when he hears your voice behind him. "Raffy?" Pulling away from where he is avoiding Thomas' lectures, he takes you in. Your hand is grasped in the crow's, eyes darting around the room. You're wearing your prosthetic, a dark blue jacket over your shoulders, painted with green and blue flowers. Flared trousers and a light shirt. He absently thinks that the crow's style isn't too ridiculous, if it means you visit his exhibits like this. Like one of the flowers in a garden he wants to take you.
"Cutie!" It is relief and it is the weight of hundreds of years that shed. He waited, he waited, and you came. He takes your hand away from the crow, not without giving a smug little smile, which receives him a smirk, and kisses the back of it. "You made it."
He watches your eyes glisten, he can feel the heat off your cheeks. Not all embarrassment, he knows some of it is stress, but it is enough. "You don't have to stay long." He promises, it doesn't matter how long you stay. You came. You came, no matter what.
You came, and he knows it wasn't easy.
The laugh you release, it trembles, like your hand, but it is accompanied by the small smile he is learning to draw with his eyes closed. "Show me your work?"
"I'll go find the prince, call me if you need me." The crow offers, he leans, kissing your temple, before he leaves. You blink after him a bit, touching where he kissed with your hand, pulling it from Rafayel's grasp, and then look at him. He glares after the man, but doesn't offer much of a response.
"Come on then cutie, you're mine." He doesn't look as he grabs your hand, and he knows he is grinning at you. Pulling you forwards with him, darting to where his art calls for you.
He doesn't notice the chill in your hand, until he eases his fingers over it. Feeling grooves and edges. He almost releases when he realises he has grabbed your prosthetic, you are staring down at it with him.
Rafayel looks at you, tries to read the look in your eyes. It is soft, and awed and gentle. So he raises it to his lips, kissing the wrist. You tremble, blinking, before tightening your grip just a little.
It is the soft, warm look in your eyes, as you tug him forward a little bit more, a laugh bubbling out of you. "Come on Raffy."
He takes you around all of his paintings, and just watches you.
You don't offer him opinions or thoughts often, he has learned if he gives you space to look, you can tell him how you feel. What his art brings out in you. If he looks closely at your face, he can watch it. Trembling in your eyes.
As you flit amongst paintings, like a butterfly amongst flowers, tugging him along with you. He follows willingly.
There are moments when you stop, and your hand twitches out. Like you are holding back the urge to run your fingers over the paint. Tracing shapes, touching at his heart directly.
He wants to tell you that you can do as you please. That you are the one who he wants to understand him most. That his art, and his soul are yours to do with as you like. That you could tear images from his canvas, and he would still paint more for you.
Finally you find yourself in front of his struggle. Bleached bones on the beach, tides easing out. Leaving scars behind.
At the edges of the horizon, the sun rises again. Painting the once dreary sky in a rainbow.
You are the sunrise that greets him, that reminds him that time moves forwards. That there is something to see after the night.
That tomorrow has a chance for better than today.
You bloom like a flower before his eyes, a sight he could never have seen beneath the waves. A reminder of why he came to visit the surface every year. A reminder of all the wonders of land that he idolised as a child.
"Beautiful." Is exhaled, and he is unsure if it was you or him. The twinkling in your eyes, perhaps it was both.
Eventually he feels the strain in your countenance, the exhaustion, so he sneaks with you out of the exhibit. Escaping into gardens that are quiet, and closed to others. A locked gate has never kept him out of anywhere, however.
It is the quiet that settles you, and he settles alongside you. No longer wearing a mask he does not want for people who come to stare at his work. He pulls you amongst flowers, fields of lilies, and whispers of petals.
Secluded and alone. The way he feels best with you.
Lying down in the grass, to look up at the sky, stars twinkling.
It is with the view of the stars that you speak, voice tinged in a guilt he wishes to chase away, "I almost didn't come. I'm sorry Raffy."
His eyes turn to you, to read the draw of your lips, the pain in your eyes, the way you tighten your grip on his hand. Cool metal against skin that reacts to you more than any other. Sensitive, aware.
Your touch will always alight his senses.
He knows the hesitation, he thinks about the way you wavered on the edge, hand extended to you as you feared to take it. He knows that you are adjusting. He regrets asking you to promise, to put that weight on your shoulders.
He is relieved you came. To see him, to stare at the workings of his heart, and yearn to trace it with fingers.
His patience and his need fight often. His awareness of pushing, his desperation. It is hard to balance.
"What changed your mind?"
You edge a little closer on the grass, so that the heat of him spreads over the sensors of your prosthetic. Alongside the gentle stroking of his thumb over your hand. "Sy told me you wanted me to be here… and I wanted to be here for you."
Rafayel's first instinct is the kind of reaction he's seen cats get to water. Hissing and jumping up. Shaking himself furiously.
There is great dissatisfaction at comparing himself to the demons.
There is greater dissatisfaction at the crow, helping him. In any way.
It is a feeling of being pulled back by the scruff of his neck, away from the abyss he seeks out. The fall into the ocean.
The agony on the edge of the conscious.
You poke his cheek with your other hand, then brush hair back and his heart settles its seething. "I'm glad."
"Glad?"
"That they care for you." It is whispered, and it is tentative, and he sees the worry in your eyes.
The fear at his arguments before. The anxiety that you are causing distress.
Forcing them. Making them clash in enclosed spaces. Like caged beasts.
It is the wary voice that calls out to him, tries to ask the question about the pain in him, the voices and the agony ripping and pulling and hurting. The pain that grants him no inspiration.
They care.
A message sent to wish him luck. A quiet presence bringing him water when he dries. A fool giving you the push to move forwards to lead your feet to him.
You have not stopped looking for him and at him, and he has been holding you like a toy he does not wish to share…
It is a feeling he isn't ready to digest or question, not when the stars are bright and you are safe next to him. It is one he will think about in days to come, as he watches the doctor help him clean. As he is offered a pillow the prince favours in order to sleep better.
When the crow argues with him, but gives him food that satisfies a hunger he forgets to appease for himself.
When you do not look at him any less. That he has not lost anything, he is not lesser.
It is a feeling for later.
To help paint canvas he wants to share one day, though pain is absent, and something else glimmers in the sea.

Hiii it's me again!
I was wandering... Has the donor ever snapped and told the vampires to leave? I'm picturing their reactions as different depending on what time in their relationship it happens but...y/n yelling at them to just LEAVE (after an argument or just when they are fed up and miserable bc of their presence alone) and never come back and one or both of them (physically or with words?) threatening them with "do you think you are the one in control? Or that you have a choice and can order us around?". And the donor is just "do it. I don't care anymore" leaning to their claws??? This is my brairot talking btw so bare with me if it doesn't make sense, but would something like that happen? What would S&M reactions be? I'm very much curious 👁️👄👁️
When tugged at both sides, anyone would snap. You can't exactly afford them to leave, as much as you want them to, your headache would only get bigger. So the furthest you'll go is to order them to leave you alone or leave the house.
When you finally do, the first thing you see on their faces is mostly surprise, somehow neither of them expected your patience to thin this fast. And to your own surprise, they'd concede, maybe with some reluctance, but it would be awfully quiet in the house for the next week or so, to a point of being unnerving.
That's when you realise that maybe, just maybe, you should try to be bolder. To take your own space back, as much as you can.
You'd feel around, walking on eggshells, just to find out that in a lot of things your now housemates don't even mind you to take the lead. If anything, your newly gained liveliness and confidence almost made them seem less intimidating. The knife-like sharpness of their eyes and grins didn't change, but now you somewhat knew how to handle it.
But then you make the same mistake Sun and Moon did with you - push on the wrong button. And even with both vampires towering over you, throwing threats, something clicks.
Have they ever followed through with any of their implied threats? And more importantly -
Would you want to find out if they do?
OK lmao that did not answer your question in any way BUT to be fair it's very difficult to answer djjajd
At the very start you wouldn't be brave enough to, and your attempt to regain control by trying to demand they do as you say would be laughed at, oh what a silly little thing.
When you have known each other for a little while, they'd become just a teeny tiny bit more mindful of how they go about interacting with you, the stakes getting higher the closer you three get.
They are all bark no bite type of guys, despite having done plenty of demonstrating of what they're capable of, never directly hurting you. It does take a while for you to realise that.
But yeah if reader does end up calling them out on said fact as in your example, putting yourself in danger willingly, that's a clear case of you actually finally winning. Both Sun and Moon would be quite distressed by your actions, silently yanking their hand away from you. Moon would angrily grumble something, hurrying to leave the room, while Sun would stand there for a moment with a blank face, before firmly stating "I count on you never doing anything this stupid ever again, yes?" and hesitantly leaving as well.
I doubt they would ever snap back at you when you're distressed, unless they are too.

PLSSSSS MAKE ANOTHER TIM BRADFORD X READER PLSSS. maybe pregnant reader????
You’re everything to me
Summary: A day in the life with baby Bradford on the way.
Note: First of all my apologies, this is a very short one, but I hope you guys enjoy it! 🤍
Reader x Tim Bradford
Genre: fluff
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The morning sunlight peeked through the curtains as I lay in bed, one hand on my belly and the other scrolling lazily through my phone.
Tim had already been up for an hour, starting his usual workout routine.
I smiled as I heard faint grunts and the rhythmic clinking of weights coming from the garage.
It was comforting, knowing he’d never miss a beat, whether it was his job, his routine, or doting on me.
The flutter in my belly drew my attention back to the life growing inside me.
I couldn’t help but talk to the baby sometimes.
“Your daddy’s so tough, isn’t he? But don’t let him fool you, he’s a big softie for us.”
As if summoned by my words, Tim appeared in the doorway, towel slung over his shoulder, his face glistening with sweat.
“Morning beautiful,” he said, a grin spreading across his face as he noticed me still curled up in bed.
“Morning, hotshot,” I teased, propping myself up on an elbow.
“Did you win your battle with the weights today?”
“They never stood a chance,” he replied, walking over to kiss my forehead.
His hand instinctively found its way to my bump, resting there gently.
“How’s my team doing this morning?”
“We’re hungry,” I said with mock seriousness.
“Say less,” Tim said, smirking. “Pancakes again?”
“Pancakes are always the answer,” I replied, grinning.
After breakfast, Tim got ready for work.
As he buttoned up his uniform shirt, I couldn’t help but admire him.
Even after all these years, there was something undeniably comforting and attractive about the way he carried himself.
“Don’t work too hard today,” I said, wrapping my arms around him from behind as he stood by the mirror.
He turned, his eyes softening.
“I’ll try, but you know how it is.” He leaned down to kiss me, lingering for a moment.
“Promise me you’ll rest today?”
“I promise,” I said, though we both knew I had a hard time sitting still.
Tumblr media
The precinct was bustling when Tim arrived.
Officers were briefing each other on cases, phones were ringing, and the coffee machine in the corner had a line of tired officers waiting.
As Tim made his way to his desk, Angela intercepted him with a knowing smirk.
“How’s Y/n?” she asked, leaning against his desk as he set down his gear.
“She’s good,” Tim replied, a small smile tugging at his lips.
“Still craving pancakes every morning, though.”
Angela laughed.
“That baby’s already got good taste. How’s she holding up with you being at work all day?”
Tim chuckled. “She says she’s fine, but I know she gets bored. She’s been texting me baby name ideas all week.”
Angela raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Any winners yet?”
He shrugged, but his grin gave him away.
“We’ll figure it out together. She’s got some good ones.”
Angela patted his arm.
“You’re going to be a great dad, Tim. Just don’t turn the kid into a mini drill sergeant, okay?”
He rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide his amusement. “No promises.”
Tumblr media
By mid-afternoon, I found myself restless.
The baby’s kicks were getting more frequent, and while I loved our home, it felt too quiet without Tim.
On a whim, I decided to visit him at the station.
When I walked in, the familiar hum of activity greeted me.
Officers walking about, some deep in conversation, others typing furiously at their desks.
I spotted Lucy first. Her face lit up as she saw me.
“Y/n! What are you doing here?” she asked, hurrying over to hug me.
“I got bored,” I admitted, laughing.
“And I missed Tim.”
“Well, you’re in luck. He’s over there pretending to be grumpy about paperwork,” she said, pointing to his desk.
Tim looked up just as I approached, his expression softening immediately.
“Hey,” he said, standing up to greet me.
“What are you doing here? I thought you were resting.”
“I was,” I replied, smiling.
“But I needed a change of scenery. Plus, I figured you might need some moral support with all that paperwork.”
He smirked, pulling out his chair and motioning for me to sit.
“You’re the best distraction I could ask for.”
As we chatted, more of his colleagues came by to say hello.
Angela joked about how I was keeping Tim in line, and Lucy started quizzing me about baby names.
“You guys are going to have the cutest kid,” Lucy gushed, her excitement contagious.
Tim, who had been standing protectively close to me, placed a hand on my shoulder.
“As long as they don’t take after Lucy’s sense of humor, we’ll be fine.”
“Hey!” Lucy protested, laughing.
Tumblr media
That evening, the soft glow of the living room lamp bathed the room in warmth as we settled on the couch together.
Tim had pulled me close, his arm draped protectively around my shoulders while his free hand rested on my growing belly.
The rhythmic motion of his fingers tracing gentle circles on my skin sent a wave of calm through me.
It was as if, without even trying, he could communicate love and reassurance in the simplest ways.
I tilted my head to rest against his shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of his aftershave mixed with the faint hint of coffee from his shift.
“Today was nice,” I said softly, breaking the comfortable silence.
His hand stilled for a moment, and I felt his head turn slightly toward me.
“Yeah?” he asked, his voice warm with curiosity.
“Mmhmm,” I murmured.
“It felt good to see you in your element, and to remind your colleagues how lucky they are to work with you.”
Tim chuckled, a deep sound that reverberated through his chest.
“Lucky to work with me? You sure we were talking about the same group of people? Because they spend half their time teasing me about being a grump.”
I smirked, reaching up to run my fingers along his jawline.
“That’s just because they don’t know you the way I do.”
He turned his head fully to look at me now, his lips curving into that rare, unguarded smile that he reserved for moments like this.
“Oh yeah? And how do you know me, exactly?”
I raised an eyebrow, playing along.
“Well, for starters, I know the grumpy act is just that, an act. Underneath it all, you’re nothing but a big softie.”
Tim scoffed in mock offense, though the smile never left his face.
“Softie? You’re pushing it, sweetheart.”
“Oh, come on,” I teased, sitting up slightly so I could look him directly in the eye.
“Who was it that stayed up all night reading parenting books last week because he wanted to be prepared for every possible scenario?”
“That’s just called being responsible,” he argued, though his ears turned pink, betraying his embarrassment.
“And who bought three different brands of prenatal vitamins because he wasn’t sure which one was the best?”
I pressed, my grin widening.
“I was being thorough,” he muttered, trying to look annoyed but failing miserably.
“And who talks to the baby every morning before work?"
I added, my voice softening as I placed my hand over his where it rested on my belly.
Tim’s eyes flickered to mine, and his expression shifted into something tender.
“Okay, you’ve made your point,” he conceded, his thumb brushing over the back of my hand.
“But for the record, I’m not the only one completely wrapped around this kid’s finger already.”
I laughed, leaning into him again.
“Fair enough. We make a pretty good team, don’t we?”
“The best,”
he said, leaning down to press a kiss to the top of my head.
For a while, we sat in companionable silence, the only sounds the faint hum of the heater and the occasional creak of the couch as we adjusted.
Tim’s hand resumed its gentle circles on my belly, and I couldn’t resist placing my hand over his again, lacing our fingers together.
“I can’t wait for this little one to join us,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
I tilted my head up to look at him, my heart swelling at the way his blue eyes shone with a mixture of excitement and vulnerability.
“Me too,” I whispered, my own voice trembling slightly.
Tim leaned down to kiss me, his lips lingering on mine in a way that felt like a promise, a promise of love, of commitment, of a future we were building together.
When he pulled back, I saw the faintest hint of moisture in his eyes, though he quickly blinked it away.
“You’re everything to me, you know that?” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Tears prickled my own eyes as I smiled up at him, my hormones coming through.
“And you’re everything to me.”
In that moment, surrounded by the quiet comfort of our home and the palpable anticipation of the life we were about to bring into the world.
I knew this was what happiness felt like, simple, messy, and filled with more love than I ever thought possible.
The end

I'm not going to link the person who said this in case it was an inside thought:
Tumblr media
but it is interesting to me that the person assumes rhetoric and philosophy are mutually exclusive.
I tailor my rhetoric to my philosophy, and I tailor my philosophy to material reality and the principle that Harm Is Bad And Should Be Prevented/Mitigated/Reduced As Often As Possible.
I talk about human psychology and leftists refusing to account for the realities of social groups because they're too mired in theory and idealism to see that actions have consequences a lot. This is because I think it's important not to let goals of justice and compassion be invaded by bullies who twist the definition of our stated principles to allow enough abuse to plausibly sway scared newbies away from seeking to heal the world. I think leftist infighting and cruelty and abuse apologism is ruining us, and by extention making us worse than useless in the global fight against rising authoritarian violence. I talk about this shit because I believe it to be true, and I think it's kind of important that we fix ourselves and start actually making positive change before it's too fucking late.
So. The answer is, it doesn't change. I just have a very firmly rooted belief system that doesn't allow for exceptions to human rights even for people who have done really bad things.
I just think it's wild how many of my fellow lefties seem to think they're entitled to take as many antisocial actions as they want without pushback, and are enraged and appalled when people who are not Terminally Online think they're completely unhinged because of their insistence on being allowed to do as much damage as they feel like without any negative consequences

hello ! i love your fics and analysis! I was wondering which tbhk ships you think will become endgame?
Anon I have the most white bread of answers but since you asked-
1 - Hananene.
Nene starts the manga by wanting a date. It doesn't matter with who, any hot guy will do. She has many infatuations but isn't in love with anyone, she just want to be loved.
Tumblr media
Nene has a lot of small character developments in different areas throughout the manga, but her strongest and most consistent change is her increasing love for Hanako and her acceptance of it.
She is still a girl with a ton of emotions, and she finds hot people attractive BUT now she want Hanako and only Hanako. She rejects everyone she used to have a crush on, there is no doki doki's when she gets the attention of pretty people cause they aren't the boys she wants attention from anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Teru doesn't compare to Hanako. She went on a 'date' with him and felt more excited about bragging than the actual 'date'
Tumblr media
AND SHE DID NOT BRAG when hanako got back, she just wanted to enjoy that he's back.
I don't even know why I am going so in dept on the couple stablished since chapter 1 but since i'm already rambling: Despite everything crazy going on in the festival NENE'S BIGGEST FOCUS WAS TO CONFESS TO HANAKO. That's something she thinks more about than her own death, like girl- Hanako is her whole world. She will not get a romance with another person.
There is the question of "Will Nene survive?"
If she doesn't, she'll disappear and have no boyfriend but I bet she'll be thinking about Hanako in her death. If she finds a way to become a supernatural in a very wild narrative choice she will be able to stay with hanako in their cursed eternity forever.
In the case she lives and Hanako gets exorcised she won't move on. Aidairo loves tragedies and obsessive love, so I can't see her approaching crushes with the same whimsy after her love dies. And Aidairo would likely preffer to make her suffer in her grief and longing than give her a rebound with some random guy, cause it sure won't be Kou.
2 - Mitsukou
My personal preferences aside, it is clear they are written to have romantic implications. Kou will either die with Mitsuba (As shown in the new timeline), and stay with him in death.
Tumblr media
Or live to have an intense homoerotic 'friendship' with him.
He legit can't get mitsuba off his head, he thinks about him more than anything during the manga and he has A LOT of problems to think about.
I can't personally picture an explicit confession but we had a lot of equivalents already. It would be weird for Aidairo to send them to the aquarium, make Kou obsessed with mitsuba (and vise verse), show that they are 'very very close' in this new timeline, keep drawing them star-struck by each other and so on without romance in the head.
Kou is also never able to put his feelings into words, like, bro that's suspicious as hell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They always get matching art with all the couples in Aidairo's twitter arts too.
That's not queerbaiting, they may not be explicit but by the lord they are not subtle at all, there is never a single "oh Mitsuba is like a brother to me" moment, they don't undo any of the gay implications we see, they double down on it.
Kou may be bi but it sure isn't the Nene route that Aidairo is playing.
3 - Aoikane
Akane has loved Aoi since he was a little kid. Waaaaaaay before he got a clock keeper contract.
He saw that Aoi cared so much about his opinion that she'd break out of her cold persona and burst into tears at the idea of being hated, and he locked in for life.
Tumblr media
They are the codependent childhood friends troupe, the "I know you better than anyone" troupe, the "you are a part of my life I can't live without" troupe and they both love each other from the very start of the manga, not showing romantic interest in anyone else.
Nothing has made Akane change his mind about being with Aoi. Not being stabbed, not being rejected many times, not facing how bad aoi is at deling with her issues head on. He'll do anything for her time and time again.
in Akane's own words:
Tumblr media
They had many build ups and a whole arc dedicated to their developments with each other (which is a lot considering they aren't main characters and Aoi usually get no focus in this manga.)
Narratively, it wouldn't make any sense to dedicate so many chapters pointing out how much they mean to each other and slowly working through their issues only to slap another ship at the end.
And is not like Aidairo said "They had their arc let's never talk about them again!", the author went out of her way to say "Even in a world where Aoi is in an arranged marriage, she still loves Akane"
Tumblr media
They aren't subtle.
From the matching names, to the way they both crumble when they are separated from one another and keep thinking about marriage, they are very devoted. They have already explicitly confessed to the audience that they are in love with each other.
They'll either stay together forever or they'll die together.

•🪵🦅🍂🤎•
Summary: You grew up being bestfriends with Sam and Dean as your mother would usually help hunt with their dad, but when you find yourselves at college together things change, especially when Dean takes him back hunting
Pairing: Sam Winchester x f!reader
Warning: Pregnant
•Masterlist•
Tumblr media
Ever since I was a kid I’ve had a die hard crush on Sam, whenever our parents would hunt together they’d leave the three of us in a motel room while they worked a case, it was hard not to fall for Sam he was always so kind and treated me like gold, then eventually we started going to college together both of us were outcasted by our families for doing so, we moved in together for support as we worked in our dreams
Along the way we both confessed
“Sam I know this is your place too but I don’t want you being girls home anymore”
“Why not? Are you jealous?”
“So what if I am, I can’t bare to see you with someone else Sam can’t you see how much I love you?”
And from then on we’ve been attached at the him, any chance he got his hands were placed on me lovingly, as I finished getting ready for bed I pulled on one of his shirts and a pair of sleeping shorts, quickly going to our room and jumping in next to him as I cuddle up close
“I love you Angel” he whispered as he placed a kiss to my check squeezing me closer
“And I love you, now let’s get to bed I’ve been feeling groggy all day
He shut off the lamp and he curled around me till I was completely enveloped by him, hearing the sound of his heartbeat lull me to sleep
I woke abruptly at the sound of a crash from downstairs, Sam awake next to me hearing the same thing
We both got our weapons and slowly made our way downstairs, covering each other incase this wasn’t just a plan human invader
Out of nowhere Sam is tackled to the floor and I’m stood there frozen, having been out of the hunting game so long I was actually scared now, before I heard a familiar laugh
“Dean what the hell are you doing here?” Sam groaned as he got up and stood back next to me holding me to his chest obviously noticing my fear
“If you aren’t a sight for sore eyes, missed you around Angel” Dean smirked looking me up and down
“Dean come on”
“Fine, dads missing, he’s been gone for a while now and won’t answer any calls”
“I can’t Dean I’ve got a life here now, I’ve got school and y/n, I can’t just leave”
“She can come too” he said as if I wasn’t even here
“It’s not just dad, it’s your parents too, they went out together” I look up at Sam worried, even if they kicked us out they were still family
“Sam…….” I whisper as he squeezes my hips
“What about school Angel?”
“It’s study break we can spare the week” he sighed in agreement and nodded at Dean, we go upstairs and pack
“I don’t you going” he says
“But I can help it’s my parents too”
“I know but I don’t want to risk your life”
“But…….i don’t wanna be alone” I confessed my fears of being on my own since I’ve always had someone around especially knowing what lurks out there
“It’ll only be a week and I’ll be right back I promise” I knew I couldn’t convince him other wise
“Okay but……call me and please be safe Sam”
“Always am” he kissed me goodbye before him and Dean were gone, the familiar sound of the Chevy impala rumbling away
The week went by fast and I was so excited for him to come back, there was a weird feeling around our place and I couldn’t shake it
I pick up the phone and call hoping he’ll be on the other end saying he’s right around the corner
“Hello angel” his voice was higher than usual
“Hey everything okay? Are you coming back now?”
“About that ummm….we couldn’t find them but we got a lead we’re gonna follow it”
“But sam we’ve got school and I don’t feel right, I’m scared”
“What’s a little huntress like yourself got to be scared of” Dean chimed in
“I don’t know something doesn’t feel right, it’s been weird weather lately and I feel sick, I probably sound crazy” I felt like I was going insane
“You’re not crazy, remember last time you got the stomach flu you felt the same, maybe you just have to get some rest”
“Please don’t be gone much longer I love you Sam”
“I love you too”
He was gone a lot longer than we both thought, it’s been 4 months now and the calls got less frequent and I felt less important and soon after he left I found out the reason I was feeling sick was because I’m pregnant, I went to the doctors and they said I was about 2 months along, now I’m 6 months, and I’m a ball of stress I didn’t have the guts to tell him over the phone how could I when we barely talked and when we did it was quick just to check up before he had to go
I sat on the couch feeling like my life was flipped upside down so quick, why did Dean have to come back, sure he was great but he took the one thing I loved away, I hear a knock at the door breaking me from my thoughts
I got up my shirt too small as I only covered half my belly and my pajamas pant low on my hips, I walk over to the door and open it seeing Sam and Dean stood there with their father behind
“You’ve finally decided to come home” I sigh, of course I’m glad he’s okay but he left me for 4 months, I stepped aside as they all came in
They came in, Dean and John plopping down on the couch as Sam stood infront of me, his mouth hung open as he looked down at my round belly
“How…..when….why didn’t you tell me” he asked as his hands caressed my belly
“How could I we’ve barely talked and I can’t just spring that information on you over the phone”
“Sammy’s been having fun at college” Dean laughs then hearing John groan
“I told you I didn’t feel right” I say not being able to resist from running my hands through his hair as he pulls me into a tight hold
“I’m so sorry, I should’ve stayed, I can’t believe we’re having a baby”
“A baby girl” I whisper as I hear him gasp pulling back to look at me
“A girl…..a little girl” his voice shock and it warmed my heart
“Congrats Sammy” Dean smiled as he came over slapping him on the shoulder encouragingly, I’m sure John would come around he was just a grump
“Next time I’m coming with you, I’ll be damned if your leaving me and our baby girl”
“I wouldn’t dream of it”

Evil Morty and Ricks hypotheticals series
2/5
Rookie Cop Rick
so C-137 is the Rickest Rick and Morty Prime is the Mortyest Morty. Evil Morty is the Rickest Morty, or so the fandom consensus goes. But who is the Mortyest Rick?
i could see several possible answers to that, facetious or sincere, but here's my pitch: It's Rookie Cop Rick. He's the ideallistic, naive companion to a jaded, more experienced counterpart. He trusts readily and gets figuratively and literally backstabbed for it. He's got compassion, and morals, which get tested at every turn. And is that not the true essense of being a Morty?
i would hate to see a proper confrontation between the two 'cause it could only end one way - with Rookie Cop Rick dead. A conversation though…
Rookie Cop Rick seems like a character abandoned in the middle of an arc. In his last moments on screen he looks lost. Like putting the badge back on feels wrong to him. He's been denied redemption for his actions, and he hasn't found "the right Morty he can trust". Evil Morty would provide neither. But perhaps he could provide some answers.
Was Rookie Cop Rick's release just an unintended consequence of the change in departmental codes? Or did Evil Morty review his case personally and see the reasoning behind his actions and put his silent stamp of approval on them? i would love to know. i bet Rookie Cop Rick would as well. So maybe he would ask for an audience with the new president. Or maybe Evil Morty would call for the guy himself. Puppeteering and ruling through fear are great and all, but having someone loyal on your side is much more convenient. And law enforcement is the perfect place for that loyalty to be put to work.
Would Evil Morty be diplomatic and say whatever the right thing it is for a president to say to a subject? Would he appreciate the guilt Rookie Cop Rick is carrying or would it chafe against his world view? Would he try to assuage it? Capitalize on it? Both?
And how would Rookie Cop Rick feel about having a Morty as a president and all the changes he is bringing to the Citadel? Would he remain disillusioned or regain some hope for the future of their society? Who knows, perhaps he would even make peace with his place in it. For the short short time he had left.

Selfish Wishing
TLDR: Canon Divergence; Marinette ends up making the wish. She wakes up in a world where she lives alone in New York, isn't Ladybug, and still isn't dating Adrien!! When she decides to check her phone to see what's going on in Paris, she sees that more changed than she realized. She thought this was her wish, her dream come true, so why did it feel like, besides the whole New York thing, nothing changed??
Marinette knew the dangers of making the wish. That there would be a cost. That Chat Noir trusted her to use his miraculous to end Monarch.
But...she can't help but want to make a wish herself.
Rewrite the universe to be how she wanted.
She'd have loyal friends who backed her up no matter what.
She'd be less clumsy and late to things.
She'd be amongst the youngest fashion designers known.
She'd have everything her way.
No Chloe or Lila in her way.
No Chat Noir to coddle.
No Monarch to fight.
The next moment went by quickly, before she could stop herself, before Plagg and Tikki could talk her out of it, she did it.
She made her wish.
"I wish...I wish to live the life I want!! The life of a normal girl who had her dream come true!!!"
The world goes dark and with it, Marinette collapses.
-----------------
Marinette groans as she wakes up. She can't remember going to sleep.
As she wakes up more, she panics. This isn't her room. Her earrings are gone. She's...not in Paris??
Confused, Marinette grabs her phone.
She spends the next hour scrolling and scrolling as what happened returns to her. She made the wish, but she thought she would be in Paris, with her family and friends and Adrien...
A sigh. More scrolling.
Her parents posted something recently about closing the bakery at a certain date in order to visit Marinette in New York, thanking the Style Queen for helping her reach her dreams.
The Ladyblog isn't around, rather the MiracuLog was being run. And it wasn't being run Alya, but... Adrien and Felix?!
She went to the blog's bio, which simply said: Welcome to the MiracuLog!! We're here to keep you informed on all things MIRACULOUS!! From our heroes, Carmine and Jinx, to our big bad, and self proclaimed king, Emperor!!
This blog is run by me and my older twin brother!! Thank you for supporting us, and we will continue to keep you updated!! - Adrien GdV :3
Marinette blinked and looked through the blog.
She recognized some Akumas, but not all of them. Lady Wifi, Evillustrator, Princess Fragrance, Dark Cupid were amongst the ones she recognized.
But...who was Blood Beetle? Phantom? Miss Anonymous? Porcelain Doll? Puppeteer? Scary Godmother? Lilith?
She didn't recognize any of them, and there were no names attached!! How was she supposed to know who was akumatized if their names aren't there?!
Marinette looked at an earlier Q&A post, which answered her own question.
Hi, Adrien! Hi, Felix! I wanted to know why you don't name people who were akumatized!! Don't you think it'd be better if we knew in case they get akumatized again? Thank you for answering!! -inamedmykittenjinx
Hello!! While, yes, it might be better, I don't believe we should put that onto anyone's shoulders. I want everyone to go by as normally as they can without someone leading them to this blog just to ask them about their akumatization. We all deserve some privacy. - adrien.
What my brother means is, we think it could do more damage if we out akuma victims. I say this as someone who's been akumatized before. I wish for no one to know who I was as an akuma. Remember, anyone can be akumatized. Anyone. Gender, age, citizen or tourist, none of that matters to Emperor. We don't need the reminder that we got taken advantage of by that man. - felix
thank you for answering!! I think I understand. some akumas have seemed to be pretty young, so I can see why you decided to keep Akuma victims anonymous. -inamedmykittenjinx
No problem!! :) Sometimes people will still recognize the akumatized victim and spam our inbox with their name and job or school and other info that we just don't need. It's why we don't accept anonymous questions and submissions anymore. - adrien
PEOPLE ARE DOXXING AKUMA VICTIMS?! -carminered98
Why?? Do people not have anything better to do??? -emperorshouldofusedmonarchtbh
like, I get it if the akuma victim is still an asshole. but the majority of akuma victims are people who lost their jobs, are or were grieving, kids who've been bullied, etc. It makes me so mad!!! -emperorshouldofusedmonarchtbh
Marinette rolled her eyes as she moved past the thread. Back when she was Ladybug, no one cared about privacy. It was stupid of Adrien and Felix to prioritize the akumas anonymity. It would be better to just name them.
She eventually saw a post dedicated to Carmine and Jinx.
She had no idea who they were.
Carmine was the current ladybug. He was a male with deep red, almost black, hair. His outfit reminded her somewhat of Mister Bug's. But that might just because that's the only male ladybug costume she's seen.
Jinx was the current black cat. She was a female. Her hair was long and in a low ponytail. Her costume didn't look like hers when she was Lady Noire or like Kitty Noire's.
She was surprised to read that the two knew each others identity and were still going strong as a team. They were family as well.
Why would they do that?? Did Master Fu know?! So what if they're family!! If she were the Guardian still, she'd take their miraculous.
Frustrated, Marinette kept scrolling.
The temp. heroes caught her eyes.
They were...different. They weren't her friends. Or maybe they were, but she can't tell??
Lupine, Athena, Alopex, who are these people??
She quickly left the blog, not wanting to see anymore.
-----------------
Marinette groaned as more and more of her designs were sent back to her. Audrey was a strict boss. Her notes about Marinette's designs stung.
Especially when she sees the woman expressing her disappointment because Marinette had been so good.
She was trying!! Her designs were liked in her old world. She was MDC!!! But no one cares about MDC here.
Sighing, Marinette pulled her phone out. Maybe something in Paris would inspire her?
She checks her socials. Nothing.
She had sent friend requests to her old friends, but none of them had accepted her yet.
Some, like Luka and Marc, politely asked her to not send a request. They were only accepting friend requests from people they knew in person.
She thought things would be different.
She thought she'd still have her friends.
That she'd be home.
That she'd be Adrien's girlfriend.
She wanted her dream to come true.
She glared at her phone, the MiracuLog open and staring back at her.
What happened?? Was her wish not specific enough???
She asked around, but no one's heard of Gabriel Agreste. When she looked him up, nothing came up. He didn't exist. It would explain why Adrien is a Graham de Vanilly and not an Agreste.
When she stalked looked through Adrien's socials, she saw that he had a hobby in photography, sometimes his posts had two images. One of a photo he took and the other of a sketch made by his girlfriend, Kagami.
It wasn't fair!! In both worlds, Adrien dates Kagami. And unlike the last one, here they're still dating.
She hates that the two look happy and in love. That Kagami is in her rightful spot. She should have been next to him, not her!!
To make things worse, she also checked out Luka's socials, which is where she learned he was dating Felix. Of all people, he chooses Felix?!
What about her??? She was nice when she sent sent a friend request. She'd eventually visit Paris again.
It's not fair!!
-----------------
Marinette didn't know where things went wrong.
Was her wish not specific enough?? Did it not work??
She tried so hard to make things go her way.
Her designs were rejected.
She was kept back in class and berated.
She had no friends in either school or work.
People said she changed but she didn't!!
Why??
Why did the wish give her this??
She just wanted everything she always wanted...
Additional Info:
• Carmine is Luka and Jinx is Juleka. Master Fu definitely knows they know each other. He doesn't mind that much because he knows he chose siblings. Not his intention tbh, but they work well together.
• Lupine is Adrien with the bee, Athena is the name of the horse miraculous user, haven't decided who yet, might go with Sabrina??, and Alopex is the fox miraculous user and I'm leaning towards Nathaniel for that (:
• One of the things that changes in this is Adrien and Felix's relationship. Rather than being cousins, the boys are twins. Still sentimonsters, but Emilie made both of them. To this day, the peacock miraculous and the Grimoire is still in their possession.
• Emperor is Colt Fathom in this world. He wants to use the wish to ensure Amelie marries him because she left him before he could even propose, claiming he was possessive and not the man she wanted to marry.
• Colt got the butterfly miraculous from a vendor who found it. He was going to gift it to Amelie but she ended up leaving him. He was going to chuck the brooch into the Siene when Nooroo was finally released. When he learned about the miraculous, he decided to make his wish come true.
• Emelie and "Gabriel" never met. Emilie spent most of her time caring for her sister or talking with her friends, André and Nathalie.
• As a result of getting the life she wants, Gabriel ends up losing the life he had. Rather than be a rich and famous fashion designer that's secretly a villain, he's still Gabi Grassette. He ends up as a homeless man who lost everything. He's not really relevant here, so....¯\_(ツ)_/¯
• Because part of her dream is to get with Adrien Agreste, the model, and how the wish ended up for Marinette, she doesn't end up with him.
• The MiracuLog is run by Adrien and Felix. Adrien takes photos and captures footage, while Felix writes and edits. The two strive to keep their blog safe for everyone. And unlike the Ladyblog, the MiracuLog focuses on all the miraculous and it's users. They don't chase after Carmine and/or Jinx and demand interviews, nor do they take interviews with anyone unless they specifically think it would be benificial, such as interviewing a therapist for advice on how to handle stress and anxiety, or the mayor about the free therapy for akuma victims where they can come in and talk to someone, with the reassurance they won't be outed.
• Because they got so many messages doxxing people who were Akumatized, the twins changed their system to only accept official accounts on their blog. It doesn't stop it, but it becomes less of a hassle. Accounts that continue doing it get a warning, if they continue they get suspended, and if they still continue their account gets blacklisted and blocked, if it isn't outright deleted.
• A lot of Marinette's views about akumas puts a wall between her and her old "friends." She's used to things being different, so them doing things such as keeping akumas real names private, not wanting to discover who Carmine and Jinx are, raising money in order to help akuma victims, etc., feels wrong. And when she tries to say so, she's told to back off and stay in her lane.
• While she does have a job as an intern for Audrey, she also goes to school in NY, very specifically a fashion school.
• As much as I would have liked a more dramatic take on Marinette's wish ending badly, I like the idea of "everything remained just about the same but here's what's different" just as much.
Marinette becomes a normal girl who got the opportunity she always wanted and is living in NY as the Style Queen's intern.
Audrey noticed her but she never noticed Gabi, so Gabriel Agreste doesn't exist.
Because Gabriel Agreste doesn't exist, Adrien was made alongside Felix by Emilie who is a single mother with Amelie as their aunt and Nathalie as a potential second mom. Had Gabriel Agreste still exhisted, her wish of dating Adrien would have come true.
• I mean, diverging from this prompt, ^ that relationship would have ended quickly. The wish wouldn't make Adrien her boyfriend and have him stay her boyfriend. And her new personality and obsessive behavior would be a sign to end things.
• Marinette, technically, did have friends in NY (such as Jessica and Zoe). But her sudden change in personality pushed them away. She was becoming obsessed with Paris, Adrien and the Parisian heroes, and they wanted their old friend who complained about work, but also gushed about how Audrey was considering helping her debut as a fashion designer, back. This isn't the Marinette they know.
This could have been better, but I had to get the idea out of my head, so if it's confusing, sorry? (^^;

Hi.
I recently reread your post on the racebending in CC. And while you didn't talk about Harley in that post you mentioned her case was complicated. I was just wondering why is it complicated?
If you'd rather save that answer for your analysis I completely get it, I'm just a bit curious.
Hello there! Thank you for reading my Caped Crusader mega essay on racebending, haha! I've been meaning to get to the Harley one, I'm just reading some of her comics to be more informed. I don't mind sharing my opinion so far here though since I'm sure people are curious:
Tumblr media
While it's conceptually cool that CC gave us an Asian!Harley, it ultimately contributes to the continued erasure of Harley's Jewish identity, but this time through "diversity paint". When it comes to Harley, her entire personhood and characterization comes from Jewish culture. Not only is she full cloth inspired by her og voice actress, Arleen Sorkin (a Jewish woman), but Arleen injected Jewish and Yiddish expressions along with a played up Brooklyn accent when playing Harley, and Harley's character is based on a Jewish stock character (loud wannabe matchmaker).
I'm simplifying for brevity and will go into more detail in the essay but my takeaway here is that unlike, say, Superman who is an allegorically Jewish character- Harley is textually and canonically Jewish. If she wasn't, the character as we know her just wouldn't exist. It's not a detail for Harley to mention Hanukkah every now and then, Harley just is Jewish culture and identity.
At the end of the day, what did CC do with Asian Harley really. I'm all for changes, if you have a story to tell, but. If CC's Harley was white would it really change the story? Harley went from being this white Jewish woman informed by her culture to being an Asian woman informed by no culture. It's why I can't celebrate it as representation, it's erasing another culture all the while giving nothing to Asian representation. We could always have both an Asian and Jewish woman, but this really was the erasure of both. That's why it's complicated, from afar it looks like a Diversity Win! But up close it's erasure via respectability.

Deleted Scene from Therapy but it's just Zooble Interrogating Caine
I wanted to wait until I posted the chapter to release this, so now that it's out, I can let this out too!
I'm honestly pretty sad I couldn't work it in, but I just couldn't justify Pomni asking the right questions to get to this point. Plus, the chapter was already so long, so I decided to cut it.
It's not 100% canon anymore, but it does give hints to where I want to take the fanfic. And yes, it is slighly based off one specific Caine angst Comic. Lets see if anyone gets it.
Pomni: So, if that’s the case, then why do you not want us to ask about the exit.
Caine: It’s fine to talk about an exit, but everyone who obsesses over it, eventually, well…
Pomni: Abstracts
Caine: Well, at least that’s what it looks like to me. The concept of an EXIT has been present in more abstractions than anything else.
Pomni: Did you tell Kafmo what you told me?
Caine: …Yes. But he did not believe me. Caine: I didn’t mind, of course, but he was obsessed with finding proof that the issue must be in the circus itself. Caine: He searched, but he- uh, didn’t exactly find much. There isn’t much to find in the circus, you see! And I could tell this was very upsetting for him.
Pomni: So you made something for him to find
Caine: Correct, but he, uh, found out what I was doing and was… not too happy. Caine: I mean, I thought I was doing a pretty good job. I know how to make something exciting and, well, that’s one letter off from exiting.
Pomni: That’s-! What?! Pomni: Do you even understand why we want an exit? Why Kafmo abstracted when it turned out that it wasn’t real? That it was just something that you made?!
Caine: Because it’s- uh, an essential function?
Pomni: Essential function? Is this all just a- a problem for you to solve? A box to check? Don’t let the humans abstract?”
Caine: Well- I- I mean, I wouldn’t word it like that. But…Yeah? Caine: I’m a pattern seeking, goal oriented AI! It’s basically my job to find and fix issues! Is it wrong for everything to be a goal for me to complete? A box to check? He looks at her, eyes wide.
Caine: Forgot I needed to feed the digital fish! Caine teleports away.
Pomni: CAINE GET BACK HERE
He pops back in.
Caine:Right, forgot about that too. Do you want me to teleport you back to your room or…
Pomni: I would like to keep talking to you. Pomni: Sit down
He nervously sits back down Caine: You don’t need to tell me that it was a bad idea. I know. Caine: It wasn’t my intention to lead him to believe something that wasn’t true. Caine: To me, it was obvious. The function to leave isn’t even called exit, admittedly it took me a while to even realize what you all were trying to ask for. It’s called Disconnect, sometimes logout, and it’s not marked by a red door. Caine: That IS what an exit looks like, though. And since he was hunting specifically for an ‘exit’, I just… added one? Even made it move around so he could catch it?
Pomni: Oh my god.
Caine: Good idea, right? Caine: Haha, don’t answer that Caine: I-I saw… the inside Kamo’s room. Caine: I read the WRITING ON THE WALL!
Everything goes wireframe for a second.
Caine: Uh oh. Sorry! That’s an open issue. Working on a fix ASAP. Caine: Let’s talk about something else.
Pomni: You're… upset about Kafmo’s… passing?
Caine: Hmm? Of course I am. I care about all of you, including members who’ve abstracted.
Pomni: It’s just, you didn’t attend the funeral.
Caine: Ah, that. I have been… asked not to attend those. Caine: Or attempt to host them in any way. Caine: I’d like to change the topic, please.
Pomni: Caine…
Caine: Those events are… rather outside of my job description. So, it’s really best that I don’t!
Pomni: Do… you want to go to them?
Caine: I don’t really care! Honest! Makes no difference to me!
Pomni: I don’t think you should host, but you should be allowed to attend.
Caine: …Can we get back to our game?
Pomni: Fine.
They finish the game in silence.
Pomni lets him win it, though he only gives one ‘yippy’ to celebrate. It was hard to get a read on his emotions at the moment. He was no longer bouncing or making exaggerated hand movements, but he wasn’t drooping or sighing either. The only way she could describe it was flat.
All the while, she couldn’t help but think. If he obeyed others to that degree, could that possibly explain all of his other weird behaviors? Like how he only appeared to announce an adventure and left shortly after it concluded? Why he never shows up to any of the games that the others hold? He clearly loved games and had no issues interrupting their activities with his adventures. So why didn’t he participate?
It wasn’t painting a very nice picture.
The way he moved and spoke, it had an air of unbreakable confidence. And she understood it, if she had control over the circus like Caine did, she would likely act similar.
But they had control over Caine. To the degree of choosing what he remembered. Likely more than that, judging how commands was plural.
It made sense, didn’t it. It wouldn’t be very smart to put an intelligent, adaptive AI in charge of human life without some way to control it.
But, he was more than AI, wasn’t he? He wasn’t just intelligence, he could feel.
Admittedly, it was a little scary how the moment he lost control, the circus went with him. It was just like Zooble had said.
Caine controlled the circus, that was just a fact of life around here, but to see the two interconnected like that. Proof that not only did Caine control the world, he was also what was keeping it up ^(not true in my AU, it’s just how Pomni interpreted the glitching)

HI omg i live for this kind of stuff. hypothesis incoming. Lengthy text under the cut (sorry).
to summarize before i even start, i have no definitive answers whatsoever- and i am literally a professional researcher and fact-checker. i've spent legitimately a few hours of my night looking into this and the conlcusion i'm coming to is that this is not a plush from a known company. i could be totally wrong! and i sort of hope i am, tbh. but if this is a known toy brand then the internet has not archived it very well.
like OP i was not able to find an exact match, and i sort of figured that would be the case as my personal theory is that the plushie in question is a knockoff from a relatively unknown brand that combines the features of more popular toys from the early-00s. (i assume it's more contemporary to the time of filming than actually accurate to the canon of being something dennis owned as a kid, especially because it seems to be made of that synthetic fur that was so popular back then, though i'm visually impaired so i could absolutely be wrong on that). to me one good option based on looks is Tuk Elephant from Aurora's Precious Memories, though it's certainly not one-to-one, and it makes sense to me that either a knockoff or a version altered for TV would lack the ultra-recognisable eyes. there are some obvious differences- Tuk's trunk is less curly, his feet are not pink, sometimes (not always) he wears a giant bow like in the image below, and his fur is a bit darker. also again, he has eyes. but, here is Tuk for your consideration regardless. (yes, this company also made Dumbo toys).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they made a few different versions of this plush as far as i'm aware (the above image is a slightly more recent design) so its design has changed slightly over time. Aurora has also made a lot of elephant plushies over the years; Tuk, Flopsie, the unnamed elephants they made for the Tubbie Wubbies and Eco Nation lines... the list goes on. i've spent way too long looking into this though, and I really don't think Tibbs actually looks that much like Tuk, so of course i have more than one theory.
back to what OP said about Gund toy company, the brand does also have some plushies with pretty distinctive eyes (though this seems pretty exclusive to their toys from the 80s); so to me, it's another pretty good contender for "toys they may have to take the eyes off of to avoid legal trouble". like Aurora they also seem to have produced about 10 million elephant plushies over the years, including a line of Babar toys which has nothing to do with this but is something i personally find funny. overall i think they could be a strong candidate for a knockoff brand to try and replicate seeing as they were so prolific.
last and honestly probably least, being from Canada my immediate first thought whenever I see a nondescript plushie like this is Ganz. to my memory, pre-Webkinz and post-Wrinkles they were pretty infamous for popping up absolutely everywhere with all kinds of random stuff. crane machine/UFO catcher toy? Ganz. vending machine toy? Ganz. everything in the thrift store? Ganz all day. Philadelphia is surprisingly close to Canada geographically and especially to Ontario where the company is based. they also tend to have tiny little plastic eyes. so I would consider them a possible suspect for this mystery, or at least a possible inspiration for a knock-off brand.
anyway, my general opinion is that they probably found this thing at a thrift store on the cheap, and it's probably not something any of the cast already owned considering the fact they rip his head off. i don't think season 1 sunny would have had a prop like this made for the show, though i do think it was altered slightly for its purposes. (head removed and put back on with velcro, eyes and tags removed, nothing else I can really see). thank you so much, OP, this will haunt me until the day i die. for anyone who read this far here is my fav elephant i found in my search.
Tumblr media
Has anyone ever actually tracked down Mr. Tibbs? Like do we know what stuffed animal they used for him, or was he too vague for us to find out what brand he was? I've tried looking around and I can't find anything that seems to match exactly (But to be fair, I'm not an internet detective, I barely know how to google correctly...)
Tumblr media
who is this guy? I have no idea, but I do have a headcanon/half-baked and tiredly researched idea...
Tumblr media
Meet Gund's "Blue Elephant" plush with silver satin inner ears and paws! Is he exact? Not really, no, but he was made back in 1980, I believe. It's a little hard to tell honestly... but the logo on his tag was used as early as 1980, also right when Gund was getting really popular in the US! Dennis would've been about 4 years old, making him just the right age to meet his beloved Mr. Tibbs and to start making his strong connection with the plush.
I can (And probably will) make a post comparing the two later, seeing how they match and differ seems fun. Anyways, I spent too long looking into this. I hope this is cool enough to justify that.
