Terve! Would you consider doing a Mic Mac write up? I would be so interested to read it! When I first found Jere I listened to CCC and Party, and then I went to search things on him and the Mic Mac video was one of the first I listened to. I think I was in love after this. Kiitos!

Mic Mac is early 2000's nostalgia to the max. I'm not sure how common knowledge it is with international fans, what Mic Mac actually is, so i'll go over it briefly.

Mic Mac, sometimes styled as MicMac, was a finnish clothing brand (not to be confused with a french luxury fashion brand of the same name). Mic Mac clothes were particularly popular with young people and teens. They became popular in the 70's and remained super popular with all young people until the 80's. In the 90's Mic Mac became more associated with hip hop inspired fashion, as they were the only local brand that managed to really score with their loose fit baggy jeans etc. They were still popular in the early 2000's especially with hip hop kids. Mic Mac closed down in the 2010's.

So the fact that he talks about Mic Mac loose fit clothes, and then all of the sound effects in the beginning of the song, like landline phones and dial-up internet, it all immediately takes us to like the turn of the century, maybe like 1999 or 2000 at the earliest, 2005 or 2006 at the very latest. So his childhood from maybe 6 or 7-ish to about 12 or 13-ish..? Immediate nostalgia!

He uses some clever language in this song. I want to give an example from the first verse: "olin merkillinen enkä esimerkillinen" meaning "i was weird, not exemplary". But as you can see, merkillinen (weird) and esimerkillinen (exemplary) are quite similar words in finnish. in fact they are built around the same root word: merkki. merkki means sign (a sign like a symbol or a sign like "give me a sign". not a street sign).

If you break down the word merkillinen, it actually means "with signs", but in practice means odd, weird or strange. Now, esimerkki has that same word in it, merkki, but it's a compound word: esi + merkki. Esi is a prefix that means pre or fore. so if you break down esimerkki, it means "fore sign" or "pre sign", but the meaning of the word in practice is example. And as i said, esimerkillinen, which would literally translate to "with fore signs", means exemplary.

So, he gets a very clever bar, being able to rhyme merkillinen with (esi)merkillinen, and getting a looot of information across like that.

In the first verse he also uses a word you might come across in his other work too: morkkis. His song Morgan means the same thing, morgan is a slang word for morkkis, which is short for moraalikrapula, meaning a moral hangover. Not sure if that term exists outside finland, but a moral hangover is feeling ashamed and not at all good about something stupid. Usually it's to do with drinking: you have both a physical hangover from drinking, and a moral hangover over the amount you drank and also doing dumb shit while drunk. But morkkis can be used quite flexibly to talk about other things you're ashamed of and recognise as being stupid things to do - as in this case, trying smoking as a kid. Again, a simple word but very informative, once you know what it means!

The chorus about the clothes and the whole second verse of him describing himself as someone intentionally annoying bigger boys, getting into fights and doing stupid shit like setting his friend on fire for a trick of some sort, stealing pokemon cards etc.- all of this is paving the way to understanding songs like Takavoltti. I so know this type too, i knew boys exactly like this when i was a kid lmao. But he's telling us he's always been mischievous, wild and a little bit crazy - and in this song he says the apple didn't fall far from the tree, saying his dad is like that too.

So i think Mic Mac is probably one of the more personal songs of his, those key songs to understanding the character. Mic Mac is all about him remembering the past, and i guess Takavoltti is like.. how did the crazy little boy from Mic Mac cope with everything that happened to him.

All in all, Mic Mac to me is a very sweet, very nostalgic song, that paints a lot of vivid pictures about Käärijä - or maybe Jere - as a person.

Pile ones the dynamic of person a and person b is weirdly good??? like it's a pretty funky mix I'll give you that. your person is someone stable and mature. someone that thinks of the future. someone who plans their ass off. like I'm seeing they probably journal and plan events. i don't even know if people use the reminders app but they do. organized, methodical, and so so patient. they're giving off major earth sign energy. they take care of their people as well. living with them is living with someone that always makes sure you have all your favorites stocked up in the kitchen. they're the person that reminds you gently that you have something to do tomorrow and you better go to sleep. and yet even though they're an actual earthy gift to this world they can not for the love of themselves communicate 😭 so sporadic. has so much trouble with telling the people they love their actual feelings. you know that one anime character that always has it together because they don't even acknowledge their own feelings most of the time? yeah that's them. they're always RUNNING, having them in your life is beautiful but they run most of the time so it's like their time with someone is always too limited and too too precious. + and now you. you're someone intelligent and blunt. you get straight to the point in everything. you don't like something? you say it. people can say you're quite tactless at times and it's just because you don't like bullshitting people. you're not afraid to hurt people's feelings. very clever. in relationships you like talking everything out. people could have called you an ice princess/prince in the past because you sometimes put logic in front of emotion and to the people that don't do this it's seen as rude. but you also have this other side where you believe in your partner with such astounding faith. you love quite beautifully. you believe in them more than they do sometimes. with them you kinda just know?? like you could tell them afterwords when all is said and done that you always knew it was going to be them. you have this sense of "I recognize you" when you meet them and just because of that you're so sure of the relationship and it's strength. you just seem so sure. honestly no one can tell you nothing when you really believe in something and you apply this to any situation in life. = adding these two energies together and we have a dynamic where these two people go within instead of out. both your person (who doesn't like looking within) and you (who again people think you don't feel) go within in this relationship. you both come in contact with the true versions of yourselves. you both learn to TALK and do it healthily. they come to you when they want to run. they listen and you believe in them so much that they believe in you just as much. you tell them it's okay and they believe you. they tell you they want to do this with you in the future and it actually happens. plans become real life. they don't smile much but you feel their love. you smile too much and they want to stay. both so soft in each other's presence. there's so much communication here. it's like being with each other is like meeting the same person but in a different font and by doing so you realize just how you both need to confront what is within. honestly because you both have never felt anything like this it means that this makes the love between you crazy. meeting someone who can understand you and can make you go within is euphoric.

I can envision them peaking at you from under their lashes when you're not looking. they're still very naive when it comes to love even if they don't want to believe they are. + and then there's you. you are a leader. someone that watches from up above. you have it all figured out. you don't necessarily believe you need anyone. relationships sometimes bore you. it's all the same with people. why can't they show you something new? the energy feels very much "been there, done that". you're the one planning. the one that will not chase, you consider yourself too valuable for that. let them come to you if they're brave enough. you're very private as well. anyone approaches you and you don't go telling people about it. it's more like you want to keep it on the down low because until it's official because you don't want your name tied down to anyone. honestly I love the energy even if it is screaming avoidance attachment issues 😭 = and yet!! when we add these energies together it's pure bliss like what??? you TRY with this person. they call and you answer. you're there for them. you have the urge to be there for each other. they wouldn't betray you because of their past and you wouldn't because it's just not who you are. "why would you when you can just leave if you don't like something? no use betraying you" would be along your thought process. the dynamic is supportive. you both support one another. you're there for each other. you both do well in career and work and adding these energies together makes for a partnership where financial security is highlighted and excelled in. they've been through a lot and you understand but you also force them to face it head on. they soften you up. they love you without restraint because they see your strength. they know you won't run from the depth of their feelings. you love them because the way they love is almost beautifully tragic. they've been through so much and yet they still find it in themselves to feel and not block you out. being surprised every time you guys do something nice for each other but this only making you both even more determined to do more nice gestures. you gradually realizing that you've fallen in love with them. I am seeing that there's a tendency to overthink here though. for both of you. they overthink because of their past and you overthink because you always assume you don't need anyone when things go bad because by yourself that never happened. but you both will come to see that not only does being together bring you both stability and peace but it will also bring you abundance in all areas of life. this relationship brings you both piece of mind. remember this. you will no longer feel lonely and they will no longer feel cold.

🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them.

sirius has a scar on his chin from when james punched him hard after his poorly thought-out stunt with snape. it's small, barely there, and he can get rid of it with magic, but he keeps it there as a reminder of what he had almost done. he's let his hatred for snape and desire for retribution cloud the very real and terrifying fact that he had almost exposed his friend, his brother.

at some point, james decided to actually try forgetting about lily and started dating someone by the name of charlotte fairchild (any story i've written where james is in a previous relationship, it's always with the same character. she's not even canon, i don't think) but that proved to be unsuccessful (at this point either charlottes honestly tells him it's futile effort or charlotte ends up becoming a backstabbing girl and betray him).

(i also have like a thing of unrequited love so hence this particular headcanon)

🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?

sirius just because i love him lmao. he's my bias sdlflksdjflksdj but he's also one interesting character to explore, like, being morally grey, and being complex, and always having this shadow of evil always lurking behind him even though he's obviously a good person and was trying his best to be a good person. sometimes that evil wins, like when he was bullying snape in hogwarts, but he makes sure that good wins. gosh i hope i made sense.

okay but also, this is going to sound strange, the lesser known characters are also fun to write. so like benjy fenwick, for example. it's more of the possibilities of what i can turn them into that makes it fun. i mean yeah they have established fanon traits, but it's always fun to explore how i see them specifically as characters? so like, for instance, for me benjy fenwick's the golden boy of hufflepuff, like the cedric diggory before cedric lol.

i try not to, it starts making everyone sound the same, but i can't help it. it's gotten to the point where i do it too now, in real life lol.

🤯 What's a genre you struggle with as a writer (ex. romance, action, etc.)?

COMEDY. COMEDY because like... my humour, whilst super unhinged and broken and utterly disgusting (not that that's a good thing. i don't even know why i framed it as a good thing dsklfjsldk im sorry), is not something i can translate well in writing. like, i have humour, but it's too beyond comprehensible to use and write into a story.

and this goes with any kind of comedic writing. so comedic scenes, jokes, clever pranks, quips, puns... any kind of comedic writing at all.

that's not to say i won't try, but i'll probably limit it to a paragraph or something.

horror is a close second in terms of... scares, if that makes sense. i feel like i can do the atmosphere enough, cause i'm good at over-describing, but when it comes to the scares itself i can't. i'm too marshmallow and potato for that.

(some) Riordanverse characters (bc I never read TKC) and which Hogwarts House I think they would be in

Warning: this is a long one

Nico: the dude is definitely Gryffindor without a doubt. Like Sorting isn't about some traits and some characteristics, it's about core personality. He may have gone through some of the roughest stuff when he was 10-12, and he was resentful and bitter, but he was brave and bold af throughout everything he did. From learning about his powers, to using them relentlessly despite knowing how exhausted he is afterwards, to his willingness to do whatever is necessary to do what has to be done, because it has to be done. You can't change my mind that he's Gryffindor lol.

Grover: Do I even need to explain why he's Gryffindor? He's a satyr, and even if we're shown strong satyrs, they're not really supposed to be brave fighters. Yet he is one of the strongest, bravest nature spirits we've ever encountered in the Riordanverse, and one of the bravest in general. Like he's so passionate about doing what is good, he's a hero, and the only thing he doesn't match with common Gryffindors is that he's humble and as far from arrogant as could be possible, but it doesn't take his courage away.

Hazel: She's Gryffindor, and core personality-wise, she and Nico are very much alike. They don't ever think about themselves, like Hazel really always does what has to be done, no matter the cost, I mean she literally died preventing Gaea to rise the first time, and she freed Thanatos while believing he would take her back to the Underworld. She's brave af, and she has one of the most strong willpower we've seen in the Riordanverse. She's a passionate hero, and she's the closest thing to a real knight in shining armor.

Lester: I'm gonna place him in Gryffindor because I don't think he fits in in the other houses lmao. That said, as Apollo he's very shitty, but as Lester, he's one of the most courageous people. He's grown so much, he's so willing to actually do stuff now, and sacrifice everything to do what's right, including his life, even if he doesn't know he's gonna survive. Hell, he really went most of TTT with an incredibly painful wound that nearly turned him undead, and he cared more for the future of Camp Jupiter than his own life. Additionally, he's a bit arrogant and cocky, but he truly means well, I love Lester so much.

Clarisse: Look look, all I have to say is that no one could have pulled off less than half the stuff Clarisse has done, she's so Gryffindor it hurts. She's reckless and impulsive, but she's driven by her passion to do good, even if she's the daughter of war, and was bullied by her own father. She's daring, she's bold and she is the hero. She's also arrogant and thinks she can solve everything by herself, something characteristic more of the canon Gryffindors in the books, rather than what the fans have shaped. In fact, she's very much like Gryffindors in the books, who are actually very rude to other houses and think they're the best. Still, at heart, she's in this house.

Alex: I'm in a huge dilemma about where to put them, but I reckon they'd fit pretty fine in Gryffindor. Not only are they daring and courageous, they're proud of who they are, but not in a too full of themselves kind of way, rather in a 'I am who I am, and if you can't accept me, fuck off' kind of way. They can get carried away rather easily though, and very arrogant, thinking they don't need anyone else, when they do in fact need some company. They are one of the kindest and at the same time most ambitious characters we've met, but they are brave beyond understanding in a very personal way, thus, Gryffindor.

Percy: I think it's fair to say he'd be Hufflepuff, because loyalty is literally his fucking fatal flaw, and he is the kindest sweetheart to all those who deserve it, he goes out of his way to help those who need help, whether that be mortals, halfbloods, gods, magical creatures or even his own enemies. He's too good for this world, and even if he's grown a bit bitter, he always looks to fight justly for what is right, and never loses faith in others. That, and the fact that he turned down immortality so that the olympians were more inclusive of minor gods, and their children were treated better. He's just a lovely soul, he's like 80% Hufflepuff so that's enough for me. All that and he's stubborn as hell.

Jason: Hufflepuff. Just, undoubtedly Hufflepuff. Like he seems to be this cold and self centered hero with a superiority complex (bc of all the son of Jupiter stuff) but he's the softest guy there is. Not only is he hardworking, open minded and kind, he appreciates justice but he doesn't seek for revenge or anything, he makes sure people are treated fairly and wants everyone to be accepted. Proof of that is how he continued Percy's job of including more gods, and made sure Nico felt comfortable with who he was. He truly has a heart of gold. (He deserved better btw)

Meg: God I can't decide between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, but I think I'll go with the former. She's so strong, my baby, she's faced so much wrong, but she's still so kind and understanding of others, especially those who deserve kindness. She puts up such a hard facade, but she's so patient and warm and inclusive. She's brave and strong (as strong as the big three kids, if not stronger), but she's also so loyal to her beliefs despite how she was forced someone else's beliefs for years, so I'll keep her in Hufflepuff. Also, she's stubborn af, and she can be lazy, so that settles it.

Will: I KNOW some people will say Will could be in other houses that are not Hufflepuff, BUT I won't have it any other way. Will is literally the warmest person ever. He is kind and sympathetic and enthusiastic and patient and inclusive. Like Helga Hufflepuff would take one look at him and lose her shit screaming "mine". He's the guy who saw the son of Hades so many people were scared of and immediately grabbed his hand and transfered him some warmth and didn't let him go ahead and get himself killed. He's also the one who everyone loves and likes, so much that Clarisse gets along with him and he can calm her down. He's the ideal Hufflepuff, you can't change my mind.

Magnus: I mean, what else can you expect from the son of the god of summer? He's literally a guy who heals others with warmth. He's also the guy who spent years on the street with the most difficult situations, and accepts every single person the way they are. He's inclusive af, and tolerant of everything. He's the guy who's closest include a deaf elf, a Muslim valkyrie, and a black dwarf, and he's dating a genderfluid person. Yes he's brave, and he's kinda smart, and he's ambitious, BUT none of those qualities overpower his Hufflepuff nature.

Piper: Kinda debated whether Gryffindor or Ravenclaw fits more, but in the end I went with Ravenclaw. Even though she isn't a fighter, she's very very brave, yet her bravery isn't compared to her wits. Like others in the PJOverse, she wins her fights by outsmarting her opponents, but unlike others that's one of her strongest traits. She's witty and creative and a little on the negative side, she really struggled to work in a group rather than by herself. On another note, she's able to keep calm in crazy situations and come up with the craziest most unthinkable solutions (I'm talking borderline ridiculous) that always somehow work. She's not booksmart, but she knows so much about everything, and she's lifesmart you know?

Reyna: Why are some of these so hard? Deeply debating whether she'd be Ravenclaw or Slytherin. In the end I'd go more for Ravenclaw though. Reyna's smart as hell, she's strong and sharp, and she always sees the best way out of a situation. She's witty and observant, being able to keep her cool in battle and lead others in the best direction. She's always looking to grow, and she prefers to do things on her own, but she's a great leader. She has some Slytherin qualities, and she's not learning as learning oriented as others, but she's definitely Ravenclaw.

Sam: Let's face it, Sam has the only active neurons in all of MCGA, she's definitely Ravenclaw. I'm gonna be honest though, I've only read MCGA once, so I can't remember much of their personalities, but Sam is witty and clever, pretty much the only one who can come up with competent plans, while the others rely mostly on luck and whatever plan they can cook up in 5 seconds. She's loyal and true to who she is, and she's extremely courageous and proud of who she is, but her sharpness is what she stands out for me, which is why I put her in Ravenclaw.

Annabeth: I know the obvious option is Ravenclaw, but I genuinely think she's also Slytherin. Yes she is booksmart and wise like Ravenclaw, but her personality matches Slytherins' ambitious, cunning and resourceful nature. She's smart as fuck, but she's calculative, she always finds a way to end up winning, and while she does so by outsmarting her opponents, she wouldn't need to outsmart them if she weren't so competitive. I feel like there's this 40/60 odds on Slytherin rather than Ravenclaw, but it's that small difference that counts. Plus her leadership skills are so powerful that people don't ask, they just know she's the boss.

(Also just picture the sweet and loyal Hufflepuff boy with the strong and cunning Slytherin girl, like it should be as opposite as it is with Poseidon and Athena, but they're so cute)

Leo: Idk what you can expect that's not Slytherin. This boy is the embodiment of ambition and determination. Reminder that not all Slytherins are bad btw (I'm slytherin myself), but like he's life smart and cunning, and he can analyze situations faster than anyone else. He's charismatic and talented, and there's no one to stop him from triumphing. I don't have much to say, I just know he'd be in Slytherin.

Rachel: She's kinda a difficult one, and I struggle between Gryffindor and Slytherin, and tbh I'm still not sure. But I think I'd place her in Slytherin, because even if she's brave af (especially since she was a mortal fighting in a war out of her power), her main trait is her determination. When she's set on something, she gets it done. You can't tell her she can't do something, because she will find a way to do it. She's kind, and she's only a mortal, but she still has incredible power unlike any other. I don't think I can really name it, but I think she'd be put on Slytherin with much difficulty from the Sorting Hat.

Luke: Where else could Luke possibly go? On the meaner side Slytherins have created themselves, Luke would be part of those misled by who preceded them, by those who want to take advantage of their mistreatment (bc let's face it, Slytherins are mistreated by both students and Hogwarts staff), and turn them cold and bitter. Luke is ambitious and manipulative, being manipulated himself, and it comes easily because of his natural charisma and talent. He's very freaking determined and cunning too. He'd fit right into Slytherin, but he'd be viewed as one of the rotten lot.

Thalia: I don't have much to say about this, but Thalia is the girl whose fatal flaw is their desire for power (or smth along those lines), just like most Slytherins. She's ambitious, she's smart, she's truly talented, she stands out between the rest, and she knows it, and she actually kinda likes it.

(Also I put Annabeth, Thalia and Luke in the same house because they're all kinda similar, even if their beliefs and postures are different.

Frank: Ngl I'm having more difficulty with Frank than anyone else. I'm kinda torn between Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. I literally can't choose. He'd fit perfectly in any of them lmao, I just can't decide where he'd go. You decide this one yourself.

1.) I'll dislike it if it turns out that Best Jeanist is still alive since I don't see a scenario where Hawks not killing him makes sense, unless of course if it turns out that it was all staged before hand for the villains (for some reason). The reason why I think this is that Hawks pulled out his swords on BJ after saying "how unfortunate" when BJ say's he'll be going public again. To me this reads as the equivalents as you and a "friend" being together alone in your home.

see, I see it differently. to me, what doesn’t make sense is for Horikoshi to not show us the conclusion of that flashback scene even after Hawks kills Twice. like, if he originally intended for it to build up suspense at the start of this arc, back when we weren’t sure whether or not Hawks would go through with it, that’s one thing. that actually played out beautifully. but to leave Jeanist’s fate up in the air even after Twice’s death makes no sense to me in a scenario where Jeanist is actually dead. at that point there’s no reason to keep it hidden anymore. we know Hawks is a murderer; we know how far he’s willing to go to complete his mission. so at that point there’s no longer any narrative purpose in leaving it ambiguous, right?

like, so we’ve got this mystery. did Hawks kill Jeanist or not? and there are only two possible outcomes. either the twist is that he did kill him, thus stunning the readers with the reveal that a hero would actually go so far as to kill another hero; or the twist is that he didn’t kill him, in which case the payoff comes later, when Jeanist makes a surprise entrance revealing that he’s still very much alive.

as far as the first of those two outcomes is concerned, there’s no longer any reason to keep Jeanist’s death a “secret” now if that’s the case. we’ve already seen his body. we’ve already seen Hawks kill someone else. what possible reason is there for Horikoshi to still be cryptic about it? we already know he’s not above showing us VERY detailed and gory and plain fucked-up things in character flashbacks, so it’s not like he’s barred from showing it to us because it’s too controversial or disturbing. there is just no reason I can think of why he would be so deliberately wishy-washy about it for so long only to have the eventual twist be “yes actually he really has been dead this whole time.”

but if the payoff is instead meant to be “surprise he’s actually alive!!”, then it makes perfect sense to not reveal it beforehand. in this case Twice’s death only adds to the twist and makes it that much more of a surprise. and imo it’s a much more satisfying outcome, and much more consistent with what we know about Hawks’s character. there’s all this talk about how this twist makes him “less morally gray”, as if moral ambiguity is something all characters should aspire to, but what this shows instead is that his morals are consistent, which is much more important to character-building in the long run. Hawks is someone who can see and understand the big picture and figure out the best action to take for the objective, logical greater good. but he is also someone who’s still fueled by his emotions enough that he’ll put the Greater Good at risk in order to try and do what he thinks is the right thing. and so he almost blows his cover at Fukuoka because he helps Endeavor battle the High End Noumu, and he does blow his cover at Gunga Mountain and is nearly killed by Dabi because he tries to arrest and capture Twice rather than killing him. it’s not until he has no other choice that he finally does the deed, and he pays dearly for it.

it is entirely in character for Hawks, when faced with a situation where the Greater Good requires him to make a sacrifice that doesn’t sit right with his conscience, to instead attempt some risky and convoluted “fuck it, let’s see if we can fool ‘em” solution which puts the whole operation at risk, but which allows him to spare the life of a man who’s done nothing wrong. the hubris of Hawks’s character is that because he’s so clever and is usually one step ahead of everyone else, he tries to have it both ways, and attempts to simultaneously stick to his principles and be faithful to his mission, and eventually that’s what does him in. you can’t be a walking, talking Icarus allegory and not expect your wings to eventually be burned off by the metaphorical sun.

anyway. so this outcome ultimately makes a whole lot more sense to me, ngl. as for why Hawks pulled out his feather sword when he was talking to Jeanist, I don’t know! we literally cut off right after that! almost as if whatever action or line of dialogue immediately followed that scene would have explained everything, and so is being withheld from us for exactly that reason lmao. it absolutely is a very odd thing to do while chatting with your friend; but speaking of said chat, let’s take another look at the dialogue here.

Jeanist says he’s planning to step back into the public eye shortly, and Hawks replies with, “that’s too bad.” of course we’re immediately meant to jump to the conclusion of “WTF, JEANIST, RUN,” but there’s another possible interpretation, which is that Hawks is apologizing because he’s about to explain to Jeanist that he’s gonna have to put a rain check on those plans. the sword might simply be his not-so-subtle way of saying “okay you better listen up you beautiful bedenimed man, because shit’s about to get real, and you’re either going to have to go along with the completely ridiculous plan that I am about to propose, or else I am going to have to straight up kill you, which I do not under any circumstances want to do.”

at which point Jeanist is presumably all “okay calm down kid wtf”, and Hawks proceeds to explain how they’re gonna take some random John Doe body from the county morgue and have one of the HPSC’s people use their quirk to transform the body into a perfect clone of Jeanist using a sample of Jeanist’s DNA or something. or whatever secret agent bullshit they pulled out of a hat in order to fool Dabi and the rest of the League. only we don’t see any of it, because Horikoshi does not want us to see any of it, because it would have removed too much of the tension and suspense from the Hawks spy arc.

this to me makes sense. it makes sense with what we know of Hawks’s character, and doesn’t sacrifice all of the work that Horikoshi put into writing his arc for the sake of cheap shock value. it builds on the conflict between Hawks’s own personal morals and the things he is asked to do by the HPSC for the sake of the Greater Good that don’t always sit well with him. it leaves room for the continuation of that arc as more of the HPSC’s secrets come to light, and as the heroes face widespread criticism in the wake of the Jakku disaster, which seems more and more inevitable. and, as a bonus, it provides an unexpected yet plausible last minute save for the heroes against Gigantomachia and Tomura and the rest. because it’s honestly going to take a miracle for them to make it out otherwise at this point lol.

anyway, so I think it works! we’re still missing some pieces here obviously, but all in all I’m more than willing to give Horikoshi the benefit of the doubt until he fills us in on whatever we’ve missed. I just wish we didn’t have to wait two weeks until the next chapter yet again sob, but such is manga-reading life.

Ok, so I haven't been able to comment much on my Riverdale rewatch mostly bc i'm watching it with my boyfriend and we have an agreement of no cell phones when we're watching, otherwise we can't pay proper attention to it. But I wrote down some notes about the episodes I did watch (I watched up until ep 6, which is very ironic bc apparently today is its anniversary, so yay for my perfect timing). I actually remember most of the stuff that happened in s1, so here's mostly a few things I paid more attention to or noticed about the characters and the ships, or things i'm able to look at through a different view now that i've watched all the seasons. Strap in if you want to see my notes, if not just scroll please, no ship or character hate here please. Also, feel free to ignore, this is really just a personal look in some stuff I didn't notice in my first watch.

- Betty's character used to be much happier and lighter in season 1. I know we're introduced to "Dark Betty" right in episode 3, but still, I feel like the way Lili played Betty in season 1 did not hold the same "darkness" as it does in the following seasons. The scene where she is dancing happily in her bedroom because she's going to homecoming with the boy she likes? The scene where she introduces Jughead to the Blue & Gold and gets him to work with her? Her genuine innocent happiness at seeing her sister again after so much time? The way she interacted with Kevin and Veronica? Those were all chef's kiss because she actually feels like a teenager in them. In all her girly glory, she radiates youth energy and it's a thing that was sadly lacking after s1. Btw this is not a critique at Lili's acting at all, I blame it entirely on Ras and his obsession with dark Betty.

- There's actually so many indications of Cheryl being a lgbt character in the first episodes that I have no idea how I missed it the first time. But then again, there were many indications with Veronica as well, and sadly that's not the path Ras chose for her.

- Jughead in s1 is truly so superior in so many ways that it's not hard to see why he quickly became such a fan favorite. I think even if he wasn't played by Cole Sprouse, he still would have conquered many fans' hearts. Sadly, the things that made Jughead such a loving and interesting character for me also fizzled out in s2 when the writing team decided to make him a woke serpent leader instead of allowing him to sticking to his true personality as a passionate mystery lover, a dedicated friend and very nerdy, which was very cute. I feel that we got some of that back for him in s4, which was good, but sadly s1 is where my love for him really stayed to stay. But I still care for him, and s5 has a promising storyline for him which i'm excited about, so let's see if s5 Jughead can become better than s1 Jughead.

- Going back again to Cheryl for a sec, I just noticed that the red lipstick actually wasn't that common for her in s1? At least not in the first five. I wonder when did it start becoming her trademark? Anyways, it's actually a really good look her and allows you to appreciate Madelaine's natural beauty even more.

- Also, did anybody notice how Alice lowkey figured out who killed Jason in ep 2 lmao, like... in episode two she legit says she wouldn't be surprised if the Blossoms themselves had killed Jason, which... is what happened LMAO, considering we know it was his father. And even more hilarious and tragically ironic note, in ep 6 she's laughing at Betty suggesting that Hal killed Jason because "do you think your father has the stomach for it?!"... Ma'am... i'm-.... 😂😂😂😂.

- This rewatch has reminded me of how much I adored and how I much I miss Josie and the Pussycats. The girls were such a nice addition to the cast, and their songs were so beautiful. I truly wish we get to see them again someday, but at the same time I also think the actresses deserve to be at a work place where they're given the treatment they deserve and not completely ignored and treated like extras.

- Archie/Valerie was super cute and is very underrated in the fandom, but i'm glad Valerie stood up for herself and didn't take any of Archie's or Cheryl's sh*t. Still sucks because they were really good together, though.

- Why was Jason not allowed to talk, lmao? Like, i'm sure it's become a running joke in the show at this point, but back when season one was airing what was the excuse for it? He appeared in so many flashbacks and scenes and we still never heard a single word ☠️☠️☠️☠️. I just want to know what was the reason lol.

- I liked s1 Reggie, but I feel like Charles Melton's Reggie is better because he actually feels like a douche with good intentions lol, and he has more of a personality. Most of the time I even forgot about Reggie in s1, but after s2 he definitely made me more aware of him. So for that, I like Charles Melton's Reggie more. But the actor from s1 still did a good job with what he was given.

From now on I will be talking about the ships, so bear with me, and know that I am a multishipper. Yes, I have my preferences. No, my word is not law, it's just an opinion, so please respect it.

- Bughead is still super cute in s1. I feel like from s1 they will always be my otp, even if I no longer feel as strongly about them now and have a different insight as to where I would like their story to go, and now I definitely see the problem others had mentioned before of how they kind of took over the show, which is something I kind of closed my eyes to before... But I really loved them in s1. It felt like a very juvenile teenage relationship, they didn't give much thought on why and if they should be together, they just went for it like teenagers usually do, and they were very very cute together.

- I feel like if you don't count Beronica (because they really were the best no matter what you say or ship), if there's a ship that deserves "best chemistry" award for s1 is probably Varchie. I lost my interest in them years ago, but this rewatch reminded me of why I actually loved them once. They never really became an otp for me, but Kj and Camila's chemistry in s1 was VERY GOOD, and I really liked them. Their kiss in the pilot was electric and the s&xual tension was OOF, and that chemistry carries on through the season. You can easily tell something will happen between them eventually. It makes me sad bc I don't know what happened after s1, but their chemistry from s2 onwards was just... not there for me. Which is ironic bc it's the season they truly started dating and they got a lot of smexy scenes, but I just... didn't feel it. But I'll leave that comment to my s2 rewatch. For now just let me enjoy Varchie's chemistry in s1 while it lasts because it was really good.

- Now we get to Barchie, who I made clear was the reason for my rewatch, so let's get to it. I LOVED the way Barchie was written in s1. I remember when I first watched Riverdale, I was curious about their dynamic but didn't put much thought into it because I loved Bughead too much and wanted them to be together, and I thought Barchie would be the traditional "first og ship" thing and wouldn't have a big follow up, but boy was I WRONG and am I GLAD for it. I'll talk more about their development in the next seasons when I get there, so for now let's focus a bit on s1. Just in like the first two episodes, there is so much Barchie foreshadowing, like, it's legit insane how it was right there in my face and I missed it the first time! "I have never felt what i'm supposed to feel with betty", "it's not my fault he doesn't like you", "I can't give you the answer you want"... Omg, those are obvious eyebrow raising "this will come back to bite you in the a$$" moments and it's incredible how they actually DO! I would call it clever writing, but like... it's Riverdale lol. So I really am just glad that the ship was done this way, i'm glad Barchie has the back story that they do, they've really come a LONG way and i'm happy I get to experience their whole growing storyline. It's also especially good because s1 actually provides you with scenes that show you their friendship and how they're so close, you see them hanging out, talking, their pictures together, everything was just really done well with them. Still have a bit of critique with the way Archie contradicted himself sometimes regardinf his feelings for Betty, but let's be honest, we've watched enough Riverdale to know that's just a problem with the writing.

- Kevin/Joaquin is still my favorite Kevin ship, i'm sad it's completely impossible to go back to them someday so for now i'll just be really glad it existed and that I got to see them even if it was short-lived. They had great chemistry and their kiss scenes always outsold.

- Beronica... sigh. Beronica. The most wasted chemistry i've ever seen on CW and I've watched a LOT of CW shows. There was so much potential there, s1 was practically overflowing with them and it's one of the reasons it became some popular. I remember when the Beronica fandom was the biggest one, ah, good times. Veronica and Betty were easily the best part of season 1, their friendship, their lowkey romantic moments, they were just superior in every way. This ship deserved better, not even just as a ship, but as a friendship.

- Veronica's s1 hair >>> Veronica's hair in seasons 2-4. I loved the side part and I am glad it's back in season 5, it looks so much better like that.

- Cheryl, as always, deserves better. Can't wait for her to meet Toni so I can watch again Cheryl finally get to love someone and be loved back, which is exactly what she deserves.

1) it would've been really clever... If Furuhashi had actually foreshadowed something about it. Pulling the rug from under the reader is fine, it can even be great, but you need to prepare the field for it, and it might just be me that wasn't able to see it, but after that happened i didn't looked back and went "of course! I should've seen this coming, it all pointed to it and I was blind! A fool!", but instead "what the fuck"

2) I decided to believe that he had a few of those places ready around the tower, because my mind is starting to fry itself, it's almost the level of plan that I hear people tell me are happening on JoJo

3) with the revelation of a bomb set under the roof, saying that it was luck rather than planning starts to become more and more plausible...

4) again, it is not that it is impossible, but it feels cheap when it happens in a story. A good unexpected event is one that later you look back and go "should've seen this coming, it was clear this is where the story is going!" and sure, birds in the middle of the city are to be expected, but would you say you expected one of them to get in the way of knuckles?

Thelreads, Vigilantes 56, Replies Part 1

1) “It’s time or some quality bullshit boyos! The Fight between Gunkleduster and McBee is about to start, since this is apparently what the arc was supposed to be about this whole time. Sure.”- It was a neat narrative trick Furuhashi pulled, playing up CC’s importance and role throughout the build-up to this moment to obscure knuckleduster’s own efforts working in the shadows, so when his plan becomes unveiled, both No:6 and the readers are equally unaware of the prep work he’s put into planning this fight and ambush, so he’s got some leeway to have pre-panned a lot of booby-traps specifically to counter No:6 and his tactics. Granted, it’s a bit of a stretch, but Knuckle is a batman expy, and Batman has preparations for everything.

2) “Aaaaand I already lost. Oh my god that one was fast but- Again Knuckles, when did you start going after McBee specifically? Also, when did you came up with this conclusion? Not to say, do you know how many fucking buildings there are that McBee could be sitting on top of? How did you even managed to find a place with a clear view of the exact one? “-  I think the diagram is a bit simplified for convenience’s sake. Odds are, yes there are a lot of buildings around that No:6 could stand on top of, but since he’s so arrogant, it’s pretty much guaranteed that he’d be standing right out in the open, under the impression that his speed would let him handle any such attacks that came at him in a wide-open area, not considering that fact that somebody might already have a high-powered gun in place aimed at his head from the start, so being in a location where he’s got a good view around him actually works to No:6’s advance in his eyes, since he should be able to see any incoming heroes and vamoose before they reach him. 

I’m reminded of Tomura viewing the Nomu rampage at Hosu atop a water tower, because it didn’t matter if anybody spouted him, he had a warp gate ready to go the second they got close to him. Secondly, just because there are a ton of buildings, if Knuckleduster can pick some of them that have a higher elevation that the rest that gives him a wider scope of view to see most of the buildings around him, raising the chances of him being able to shoot at No:6’s position even if he’s not exactly in the prime spot for a sniping shot to the brainpan, since that would play to his backup plan anyway. As it stands he was in the best spot Knuckle could hope for, but not even he can plan for the hand of the author throwing a bird in his face at the crucial moment. True, if he was in another location on the opposite side of the dome then Knuckle’s position wouldn’t work, but I bet he had about maybe 2-3 such locations mapped out in a triangular location around the dome to widen the range of his available shot, and he merely headed towards the one the afforded him the greatest view of the area No:6 was in and took his chances from there. 

Technically, the bullet doesn’t even have to kill No;6 to do its job- it’d be excellent for Knuckle if it did, but if all it does it catch his attention, then that’s fine too, because them he can move onto the backup plan and finish things with an explosion to the face, which also negates the chances for No:6 to survive his  bullet wound and escape whilst Knuckle’s hurrying over to the spot where his body collapsed. Honestly, given the chances that Knuckle suspected that No:6 was modified or enhanced in some fashion, he might have had doubts that the sniper shot would be sufficient to kill him even if it did land perfectly, but if it doesn’t, then it pretty much guarantees that No:6 will coming running right to him and step into his prepared home-field advantage, which is frankly the best chance a quirkless man has of beating a close-range fighter with a superpower. 

Still risky, but by fighting him alone, Knuckle maximises the chances that No:6 will step into the trap of his own free will, rather than running away if he sees Knuckle has a heroic type backing him up. In a way, Knuckle’s plan here maximises on exploiting the weakness he has fighting quirkless to lure No:6 into a location where he can best negate his advantages, so working out where to locate the best viewing angles in the surrounding areas to shoot from was a necessary first step for him to start taking on No:6 in Knuckle’s kind of fight- a totally one-sided, unfair beat down.

3) “Not only you found a building with a perfect clear view of him, but it was less than a quarter of a mile away from him- sure, Knuckles probably saw him and just moved to a closer building, but I choose to believe he was simply that lucky.”- Well, yes, there was a degree of luck involved in that, but from his position, I think Knuckle has a fairly good view of the surrounding rooftops for a much larger radius than he needs to shoot from, so it really is luck that No:6 happened to pick one that gave him a prime killing shot opportunity. Even if he picked one further away, I think Knuckle could still take the shot and it’d achieve the end result regardless, it’d just be more likely to be a wounding shot due to the distance and bullet drop involved in landing a more accurate hit from further away.

4) “OH WHAT THE FUCK

A BAT NOMU SURVIVED THE VORTEX?

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT, I CAN’T BELIEVE IT, THAT WAS WAY TOO CONVENIENT”- More like a random bird, which is even more convenient. The problem with making a character like Knuckles hyper-competent in fighting and planning is that for things to go wrong for them, it is necessary that the world somehow throw the more unlikely circumstances at them to derail their carefully thought-out plans despite all their efforts. Nobody can account for pure random chance, but given the timing and how laser-focused Knuckle’s vision was to land the hit straight to the skull, it really stretches disbelief that a random flying rodent would go through his line of sight at the exact moment he was squeezing the trigger.

5) “Shame that the Gunkle’s GUN is already about to be thrown aside, because only one shot would be allowed, and unfortunately God-furuhashi is a trickster deity, and wouldn’t allow things to be simple after throwing so many good ideas under the bus to allow this moment to happen. “- Well, more like one shot would be allowed to hit, since he did manage to reload and fire again, but the good thing about explosions is that you don’t have to be exactly nearby them to get hit with them, and from the looks of it, that Blast was right under No:6’s feet.

6) “And there McGoes McBee McJumping around

…

Alright, that was definitely not something that someone with a speed quirk would be able to do, but since there’s some debate over his origins then there’s a high chance of physical enchantments allowing him to do so.”- Hey, if you wanna be better than the original, sometimes the newer model needs an overhaul for better performance. Get some new tires, a new engine filter, faster electronic systems and your car will outperform the old model in every category- it’s the same principal. The only question is how much of No:6 has been modified over the years by this point…

7) “Is that- is that the fucking- no, it can’t be, it flew to the right, while McBee is coming at Knuckle from the front. This just so happens to be a random bird to happens to in the wrong place at the wrong time and now is going to be goomba-stomped by McBee…”- Or No:6 just decided to kill the same bird that accidentally saved his life because he’s a prick like that. Ok, it was a convenient mid-air foothold he needed to close the distance quickly, but still he probably had other ways of getting up to Knuckles besides that, unless he really wanted the air time to pull his ‘teleports behind you’ move on his ‘old master’.

8) “Holy crap he did end behind him, god fucking dammit I was right on the mark with that joke I hate the gift of prophecy.”-

9) “Oh boy okay, so we immediately jumped on confirmations left an right. So McBee has some serious enhancements under the hood that explains those super-human feats that have been happening so far.

Thank you for getting straight to the point Knuckles, now throw the gun to the side and throw hands with him, I demand the fight of the century after that bird bullshit”- Well, throwing hands in a fair fight against a man who can beat you to death in less than a second is a suicidal move, but Knuckle is more than happy to throw bullets and bombs at him until he can’t use his Overclock easily anymore and then throw some good old-fashioned hands into the mix.

10) “Oh… Oh boy, time to delve into the past? Are we about to hear how Knuckles got his quirk stolen? Are we going to see how McBee got created? Actually, you know what, please refrain from throwing hands, we need to hear about this first.”-  Not exactly, but we do, at least, get some confirmation that the incident that caused him to stop being O’clock was the same one where he got his trademark scar, and presumably also cost him his quirk as well, not to mention his family life in the aftermath once the factory was done using him and moved onto his family to set an example. 

And as far as we can see, this all resulted about from him infiltrating some supervillain’s lair and getting into a fight with someone he shouldn’t have, which makes me think Knuckle found out something about the overall plan the VF is working towards, and they went totally overkill on him to shut him up, stealing not only his hero identity, but his civilian life as well. Lord knows what it is, but if that’s the extent of what they’re willing to do against somebody who gets in their way, then whatever they’re planning must be big.

11) “Wait what

Knuckle, you- you just said that you were looking for him? What do you mean by that? Didn’t you knew who he was? That certainly isn’t the vibe I got when you were talking with McMole, you certainly seemed to know exactly who it was that was using your quirk.”-  Not exactly, but he knows how dangerous his own power is in the hands of somebody who lacks his moral compass- plus, the fact that it’s his quirk he’s using means that this operative is somebody high-ranking and trusted within the VF, given that their last front-line man was his own possessed daughter, so he won’t be a cakewalk to take on. In fact, the advice he gave about how best to counter No:6’s speed sorta foreshadowed his entire plan here, starting with just trying to shoot him in the head, showing that he knows the weakness of the quirk in intimate details- even more than the man using it right now.

12) “Well, I sort recall where we last dropped, Koichi getting a new older brother figure in Aizawa, McBee losing his McShit, and the fact that there’s a good chance that Knuckle is either O’Clock, trained O’clock, or at the very least is McBee’s actual fucking father.”- 1 out of 3, but in fairness to that last one, No:6 is so obsessed with Knuckleduster even an outsider like Phelps can draw the parallels between them, and it takes Knuckleduster literally confirming it to his face to clarify that they’ve never actually met before. It’s sort of a Red hood/Batman situation, except Knuckleduster never actually trained this younger version of himself in his ways- he just got lucky enough to wind up with another deranged fan of his innate badassery deciding to model themselves on his example, though No:6 takes it far more literally than Future-Stain did.

13) “Oh- Oh fuck we’ll be tackling this problem then. Knuckles didn’t liked what he heard, because he knows exactly who this person might be. Fasten your seatbelts buckaroos, the hole goes way deeper than we were expecting…”- Turns out, No, he doesn’t know the Individual who has his quirk, but he does know the threat level his own power in the hands of a ruthless criminal can be. For all his pragmatism in a fight, Knuckle does has standards and morals that prevent him from being a murderer or killer worse than those he targets, but O’Clock’s power and ability to always make the first move in a fight is simply too great an advantage to leave in the hands of somebody lacking a moral compass, so he knows that this person is somebody he absolutely has to take down, otherwise they won’t be stopped by anybody, with Koichi and co unaware of the gravity of the situation, and the police’s rules and regulations preventing them from making the first engagement the decisive one, instead having to give 2 O’clock here a ‘fair warning’ first.

14) “First off: Bullshit that you don’t know, but that’s not what we should be focusing on here, its actually the fact that you suggested that they gun him down.”- And that makes me think that, whatever the reason he’s hunting the VF, it’s not to get his quirk back. Knuckle’s dealing with the person running around housing his stolen Quirk, and he’s showing zero hesitation in advising others to blow his brains out at the first opportunity, and trying to do so himself with Zero warning. I’m pretty sure not even AFO can drain a quirk out of a dead cadaver- only living bodies house quirks, so if he kills 2 O’clock, he loses his quirk forever, yet that’s exactly what he’s trying to do, and he’s more concerned with the possibility of letting 2 O’clock continue to run around with the sizable threat of his quirk in his hands than getting it back from him. Knuckle has some other personal reason to track down the mastermind, and it doesn’t seem to be just revenge for his family, or getting his quirk back.

15) “I thought you were here to save your daughter from a mind-controlling insect that killed your wife? Knuckles, you okay there? Did you forgot something or it turns out you enjoy the thrill of the fight more than your family?”- Or maybe he’s just looking forward to putting another piece of his sordid history with the VF in the ground, one that’s arguably just as personal to him as getting back his brainwashed daughter, considering Scarface is basically a villainous corrupted version of the past hero he used to be, and is bastardising Knuckle’s own quirk for his personal gain.

16) “Oh okay then, sure, there’s nothing about McBee since he was created in a lab, but I still feel like there’s something off, I was really under the impression that Knuckles knew who McBee was, if not having met him at least trying to track his trail, but now… now they are saying that Knuckles only got to know that McBee even existed recently, which, as said, is not the implication I got before.”- If somebody’s out there using his quirk, then Knuckles know exactly the threat level they have, and if they’re somebody who was chosen by the VF, then they’re clearly bad news, especially since whoever’s running the show seems to be taking a hell of a lot of pleasure out of tormenting Knuckleduster in ways big and small. 

They destroy him as a hero, take his quirk, take his family, further warp them into tools and test subjects of the VF and then further basterdise his legacy through giving his speed-based quirk to a direct operative? That operative is nothing but bad news, and has to be stopped regardless of the cost, even if Knuckle doesn’t know exactly who they are, simply because they’re just another kick in the teeth to him by whoever’s running the VF, so they’re guaranteed to be another twisted taunt to Knuckle, in much the same way that AFO went out of his way to twist Tenko into his successor just to screw nana and Yagi over out of petty spite and mockery towards their efforts. Even if No:6 has been raised in a lab, if he goes around using Knuckle’s quirk for evil it’s nothing but a twisted echo of the hero he once was- and in fact, becoming said twisted mirror of Overclock is exactly what No:6 wants, which might actually be the whole reason he was even given the quirk in the first place, just to further spite Knuckle.

17) “The only thing that now I feel I can safely discard is the theory of McBee being a clone of Knuckles, since, you know, I feel like he would’ve mentioned the resemblance to his younger self, so it’s either a genetic experiment or an actual Nomu, I doubt this fucker was just hired for this position.”- Ironically, the whole ‘clone’ thing wasn’t too far off the mark. Just, y’know, not a direct clone.
