the night we met [tsukishima kei}
It was the night after the volley match between Karasuno and Aoba Johsai. kiyoko invited me to watch the match with her since she stopped being the manager for that team. when the match was over I went straight home, even though kiyoko told me that he wanted to introduce me to the team. but I didn’t really want to be drained from meeting a lot of new people, even though I wouldn't really talk to them it's enough to made me feel tired. I believe that kiyoko realized by now what kind of person I am. since I've been always hanging around her these last couple weeks since I moved to this high school for the eleventh grade.
The route I have been walking to my house is tiring and I know I could’ve just used my bike, but I would rather spend my time outside rather than inside my house. It was then when I heard someone ring his bicycle bell at me, I could recognize by their blonde hair that it was him, karasuno’s middle blocker, Tsukishima. he then stopped the bike to my left.
He said “you know something unpleasant might happen to school girl like walking home by herself in the middle night."
“You know that it’s rude to think that all girls are weak?” I retorted.
"I’m just trying to give you a ride, that’s all.” he said sheepishly
i chuckled “I think it’s very easy to piss you off.”
I sat on the back of his bike, He has yet to say anything since he started cycling. It’s been 10 mins of silence, but it was then I realized that he's been taking me down a wrong turn. Yet I couldn't even tell where i was.
“Eh.. Kei?” I whispered
“Why has it taken you so long to realize that I have been taking you the wrong way?…”, he laughed. “…I know what i’m doing”
Finally he stopped at the river next to my neighborhood. He leaned the bike onto a nearby bench, and laid down on the river bank.
“I've recently found that I love to spend my time here, it’s quiet you know?” he stated.
“I think you forgot that you’re gonna take me home.” I jokingly jeered at him.
“Just stay in here for a bit, plus I need someone to vent at....” he replied. I rolled my eyes and sat next to him. His brown eyes were looking up at the brilliant night sky. and I agreed, it’s very peaceful here.
“....You know my neighbor has been pretty loud for a couple weeks.”
I honestly don’t really pay attention to him, I am drowned by the night sky.
He continued “yeah, my neighbour’s uncle is kinda awful though, always screaming all the time. I can even hear him from three houses away.”
Then I realized what he was trying to say. but there is no way he’s my neighbor.
“Do you even know that I live right next to you?” he whispered.
“I'm not sure…” I replied.
“Gosh I don't think you ever pay attention, you're always deep in your own mind I bet.” he stated.
It’s just embarrassing, I never realized that he lived next to me. I always leave my house early and return very late so I don’t need to go through the chaos that happens in my house. I stood up and left, but yet he stopped me.
“You don’t need to explain anything to me. I understand if you never want to be around or talk to anyone.”, I was trying so hard to hold my tears back because it’s gonna be embarrassing if I cry.
“I’ve been watching you lately (y/n). I understand why you’re trying to avoid people.” He seemed very worried about me but I still can’t look at him in the eyes.
“Even my mom is worried about you, we can hear your brother beat you every night. I know that’s the reason why you're always wear those long sleeves.”,
I can’t hold back my tears any more, I bursted out tears. My chest started to hurt. I covered up my face, I did’t want him to see me cry. I don’t want anyone to think that i’m just a pathetic girl. The second after my outburst he started to hug me very tight. I still can remember what he smells like. He rubbed my head and just kept saying
“you’ll be alright (y/n).”

Found you
Oikawa Tooru x gn!reader
Summary: you fell in love with him at the wrong time, slight enemies to lovers trope
Warnings: angst (disappointed but not surprised)
Word count: 1909
a/n: sorry I’m a sucker for pain and I’ve been CRAVING unrequited-love-kinda-heartbreak for the past week so yeah sorry again. Also I just finished reading the song of Achilles and didn’t cry so I NEED this
———————————————————————
You first thought he was an asshole. Always wanting to be the center of attention, being the teacher’s pet but talking shit about them as soon as they turned around to continue with the lesson. He was the typical perfect boy who everyone loved, so sweet, so polite, so talented. Or so they thought.
You changed school during your third year of high school and started going to the same one as your childhood friend, Aoba Jōsai High. Kyōtani (aka mad dog) wanted to join the volleyball team but didn’t want to go alone ‘cause he knew he’d screw it up and go back to training by himself. So, you offered yourself to go with him and apply for the manager position. Boy was that the worst choice you’d ever made. Not only did you have to spend lots of time (worth of studying) in that stupid gym but you also had to deal with their self centered captain. The first thing he said to you was “hey cutie where’s my hug at” (a/n: I’m so sorry but he would) you wanted so badly to punch him in the face, but you knew better so you just rolled your eyes and ignored him.
He kept flirting with you every now and then but he grew tired of your indifference pretty quick and started behaving like the spoiled child he was. He’d argue with you during practice over some stupid shit or blame you for having given him really cold water to drink during the last match on purpose just to make his throat sore and sabotage his performance. You were petty and didn’t let him off with this behavior so easily, you’d point out every wrong answer he gave during class just to piss him off or boo him every time he’d miss a serve.
The team seemed to find your relationship with Tooru entertaining. They’d make bets without the two of you knowing, wondering who’d win the next argument or how long it would take you to punch their captain in the face.
After a few months as the team manager you grew closer to the boys and started to listen to their personal problems, giving them the best advice you could think of in order to help them out. They became your friends. Even Oikawa came to you every once in a while to ask for your opinion on some ugly outfit he was thinking of wearing to some party, only to then clarify that he was asking you so he’d do the opposite of what you’d said.
Eventually the bickering ceased and you two started to get along, greeting each other when you crossed in the hallways and making small talk when you were the only ones left in the gym. That last one happened very often. Oikawa was known not only for his good looks and popularity but also for his hard work and volleyball skills. You’d seen him staying at the gym practicing until god knows what hours of the night, Iwaizumi always being the one trying to get him to stop but failing.
One night it was just the three of you, you were about to leave when the two boys started screaming at each other. You’d seen this exact same scene before, Iwa begging him to stop and Tooru yelling at him for not being a good friend and support him. But this time it was different, Iwa was tired of this and didn’t know how to help his stubborn best friend so he exploded.
“ You are a stupid, selfish asshole ” were the words that left the boy’s mouth “ You’re so blinded by your goals that you don’t realize how bad the people who love you are suffering. All because of you and your stupid need for perfection. And I’m tired of this shit”
After that he left the gym and headed home, leaving you alone with Oikawa. The boy seemed to ignore your presence as well as his friend’s words and continued with his practice. He served over and over again, running out of breath with every hit. You didn’t really understand what the big deal was, why he would overwork himself or why Iwa was so mad at him.
“Hey, shittykawa ” you called, expecting him to ignore you. He turned around, volley ball in hand and nodded his head at you.
“What? You gonna yell at me too?”
“No, actually I just wanted to ask you what is going on. I’m still new to this whole manager thing but I’m pretty sure part of my work is to make sure you guys’ heads are working all right, and yours seems to be a bit fucked up ” it wasn’t until the words left your mouth that you realized what you had said. You looked up at him and waited for the argument to start. Again, you were surprised.
“I know, I can act like an idiot when I’m hating myself” his answer was meant to be sarcastic but his face said otherwise.
That day something changed between you two. You sat in the middle of the court and Oikawa opened up to you. He told you about his dreams and goals and how close he had gotten to achieving them, only to have them snatched away because of some mistake he had made. Kyōtani had told you about the match against this Karasuno team and how the lost had affected them, but you felt there was something he wasn’t telling you. Now you understood. Oikawa blamed himself for it. And that wasn’t all, he also talked about the amount of stress and pressure he had put himself under and how tired he was of giving it all only to be beaten by more talented people. You watched him cry and throw balls at the wall, screaming about some first year student who was a better setter than him even though he had worked ten times harder. He was mad, furious but also exhausted. You didn’t really know what to say so all you did was listen to him. Once he had calmed down he apologized for his behavior and walked you home.
That night you couldn’t sleep. You hadn’t expected to see that side of him, you hadn’t even considered that maybe that annoying egotistical self was just his shield, a mask. Ever since that night you started being nicer to him, asking him how his day was going, if he had drank enough water, etc. You were becoming friends.
It wasn’t long until Oikawa’s fans started rumors about the two of you being a couple, the team would make fun of him but he’d just brush it off and deny it. He was Oikawa Tooru, the great king, he couldn’t date someone like you. That’s the lies he’d tell himself but the truth was that he had found a good friend in you and was scared to loose that.
Late night talks in the gym became a regular, he’d always walk you home after practice (along with mad dog ‘cause he was your neighbor) and every now and then you’d have lunch with him. At first it felt nice, you liked being friends with Tooru and being able to help him out with his problems, letting down his walls and showing you his true self. It was close to the end of school that you started to feel weird around him. Suddenly the gym seemed a bit smaller than it used to be, the air felt a little dense too specially after watching Oikawa train intensely, sweat running down his neck. It’d get harder to swallow and talking to him without going blank was a challenge, something was wrong with you but you couldn’t tell what.
You didn’t tell mad dog about it, knowing he wouldn’t really have an answer to give you, so you kept it to yourself and waited for it to go away. It didn’t. You started to think about him on a regular basis, wondering what it’d feel like to hold his hand in yours or to cup his face and give him a soft pe- wait what, oh shit. Could it be? Could you be in love with Tooru?
One night, while he was walking you home after practice you decided to put your feelings to the test. Without really thinking much about it you got your hand out of your pocket and grabbed his hand. It felt cold, harsh, it wasn’t soft at all like you had imagined but you still liked holding it.
“ What are you doing?” you looked up at him with a boring expression on your face, his cheeks were... red?
“ I’m holding your hand” god you were stupid.
“Yeah, I can see that. Why?”
“ I don’t know it just... looked cold, I’ve heard you have cold hands and so I thought I’d help you out” it sounded like a better excuse in your head.
“ Oh, eh okay, thanks I guess?” He gave you a small smile and squeezed your hand, holding it tight until you reached your home.
After that incident you decided you were definitely in love with him. That same night Oikawa realized his feelings towards you were purely platonic, he loved having a friend outside of the volleyball team who could see him for who he really was and would not be afraid to judge him, you cared about him and weren’t afraid to show it. He remembered the words you’d said to him that night at the gym after his fight with Iwa.
“You’re lucky to have someone who cares so much about you, I can really tell he loves you. I know you probably can’t see it right now, but all those things he said he only did cause he’s worried you’re gonna get yourself hurt. He loves you”
He loves you.
The graduation day came and you all cried, laughed and hugged each other. You had planned to confess your feelings to Tooru once the ceremony was over, but before you could get a change it all went to shit. It’s like it all happened in slow motion, him grabbing your hands and pulling you into his arms, making you feel so warm inside.
“ Thank you for giving me a second chance, you’re such a good friend” Ouch. “ I need your advice once more, please?” He looked at you with his puppy eyes and you couldn’t say no. He took you away from the crowd of students and guided you through the halls, finally sitting on the steps of the stairs.
“Okay, so, what is it?” A part of you hoped this was a love confession, the other part knew that it wasn’t.
“ I’ve been thinking about what you said to me that night at the gym” he started “ The night I had a fight with Iwaizumi” his checks were turning red, he was playing with the rings on his fingers, and suddenly you understood. This was a love confession, except he wasn’t confessing to you.
“ You love him” Tooru looked up at you and smiled, you’d never seen him smile so bright.
“ I think I do, but I’m scared. He’s my best friend you know, there’s a lot at risk. I couldn’t bare to loose his friendship over some crush.” He let out a frustrated sigh. “But I’m sure this isn’t it, it’s not just a crush” Ou-“ I love him” -ch.

the art of obliviousness
feat. ushijima
a/n: aoba johsai, specifically makki, being a good friend! makes! my! heart! go! ba boom! reblogs are always appreciated. find the rest of the soulmate au special here
2k words
6 fucking tallies. the marks on your arm mocked you, letting you know the opportunity to meet your twin flame slipped through your fingers like sand over and over and over again.
III
excitement overwhelmed your body when you stripped down after a long day and noticed the first three marks on your forearm. most people didn’t meet their soulmate on the first pass (or in your case, three passes in one day), but this meant he was definitely in miyagi.
to makki:my tallies showed up !!!
to makki: [image attachment]
From makki: aye thats great
from makki: watch it be the obnoxious johzenji guy who wouldnt take a hint
to makki: why would you wish that on me
to makki: best friend card = revoked
from makki: be still my beating heart.
from makki: you’ve wounded me
you giggled lightly, reminiscing on the events of the day
the volleyball tournament was brutal. aoba johsai lost their chance to go to nationals. your throat was raw from screaming and cheering for them. nonetheless, you were proud of your boys. oikawa put in his all, iwaizumi was blossoming into a great future ace, and makki and mattsun’s blocks were immaculate. you were sure by the next tournament they could destroy shiratorizawa.
transferring to aoba johsai in your second year and meeting makki changed your life for the better. he’d roped you into managing their rowdy team. you had to admit, the other volleyball teams were… intimidating. the tall guys from the other teams towered over almost everyone and walked around with stern looks on their faces. even worse were the guys that hit on you despite your obvious manager uniform (iwaizumi helped you to fend them off). the most physically imposing team by far was shiratorizawa. their stony faced ace and crackhead-esque middle blocker were jarring to say the least. but at least they were professional and polite to you. (expressing the sentiment earned you the privilege of dealing with a pouty oikawa).
your first tournament was a whirlwind. you had barely registered anything other than encouraging your boys. it was all so intense. checking your arm for tally marks wasn’t exactly your priority, especially with your tracksuit jacket on. consequently, you weren’t too discouraged by the three marks glaring back at you from your arms. you would find him eventually
IIII
the first tournament of your third year had commenced and the pressure was on. oikawa’s intensity was enough to make you want to tear your hair out. he was now not only determined to beat his long time rival ushijima, but some random underclassman setter from karasuno. nonetheless, makki had your back and reminded you to occasionally check your arms for tally marks in case your soulmate was once again in attendance. thus far, the stubborn three marks glared back on you. soon enough, your manager duties consumed you. you held iwaizumi back from killing oikawa in front of his beloved fan club. as soon as oikawa and yahaba eyed kiyoko, karasuno’s manager, you grabbed the back of their jerseys.
“don’t even fucking think about it,” you gave them both a stern look.
“but why-” oikawa started to whine and you cut him off. “think about how angry you get when someone bothers me. give her the same respect.”
both boys sulked off, dejected. iwaizumi clapped you on the shoulder and gave you an appreciative smile.
the match between karasuno and aoba johsai was absolutely brutal. the neck and neck competition had you sweating from the sidelines, watching the teams barely hold their composure. when the short redhead’s spike got blocked and aoba johsai got the winning point, your body moved on its own. you ran straight over the boys, hugging them as tightly as you could.
a shiver ran through your body and your hairs stood on end. it felt like someone was watching you. glancing over your shoulder, you caught a glimpse of someone in a purple tracksuit leaving the stands. you shook your head at your paranoia. of course you were being watched, you were standing on the court with the winning team.
after the match, the team was eating and taking bathroom breaks. during a rare moment of solitude between you and makki, you leaned over and whispered, “do you really think he's here?”
He looked back at you and rolled his eyes, “only one way to tell,” gesturing to your right arm. letting out a deep breath, you slipped off your jacket. the tallies had climbed from three to four. makki grinned at you.
“have i mentioned how much i hate this soulmate system?” you huffed. makki simply ruffled your hair.
IIIII
somehow, the aftermath of the match was even more hectic than the match itself. you had so much paperwork to sort out, so many water bottles to fill, and a large group of boys who you had to babysit. that’s how you found yourself briskly walking through the halls of the stadium, praying no one would bother you. the seven full water bottles and stack of paper teetering in your arms were incredibly heavy. if someone came over to make idle chat with you, you decided you would bark at them. your patience was fraying from your own anxiety over the coming matches. of course, there was a wall of purple jacket adorned jocks crowded around right where you needed to walk.
your annoyance completely masked your judgement and you walked right through them, muttering very blunt “excuse me’s” the whole way through. You finally emerged from the large group of guys when your brushed shoulders with someone, effectively causing you to drop everything in your arms.
“fuck,” you muttered, dropping to your knees and trying desperately to pick up all the papers and bottles littered around your feet.
a large figure appeared next to you on the floor.
“im sorry, that was my fault,” a deep voice rumbled from next to you, causing you to jolt. a calloused hand brushed over your own, handing you a messily gathered stack of papers. you looked up and made eye contact with shiratorizawa’s illustrious captain. You were overcome with embarrassment.
“thank you,” you said quietly before quickly making your escape. upon returning to your team, oikawa immediately noticed how flustered you were.
‘oh manger-chan, what got blushing?” your patience was entirely gone, as you shoved the papers into oikawa’s hands and put down the water bottles.
“im going to the bathroom” you growled, glaring at oikawa. as you stomped away, you heard iwaizumi smack the back of oikawa’s head and scold him.
you splashed your face with cold water, overwhelmed. the pressure of manager duties mixed with your lack of professionalism in your interaction with ushijima had you feeling inadequate. your desperation about finding your soulmate clouded your judegment. you knew full well this might be your last chance to find him for a long time. if he was a third year, he likely would not be at the spring tournament. composing yourself, you stood straight and pieced together your put together facade. outside of the bathroom, makki was waiting you.
“spill. what happened.” a looked at you with masked concern. you explained the past ten minutes to him and expressed your worries.
“the team appreciates you, you know. i dont know what they would do without you. and if you dont meet him today, fate will bring you together. likely sooner rather than later.” makki said as he pulled you into a hug.
“really? sooner rather than later? what is that supposed to mean?” you snorted. makki only responded with another pointed look at your arm.
“are you fucking kidding me? i missed him again?” you grumbled.
“dont worry your pretty little head about it,” makki gave you a knowing smirk. what the hell was that supposed to mean?
IIIIII
6 fucking tallies. the marks on your arm mocked you, letting you know the opportunity to meet your twin flame slipped through your fingers like sand over and over and over again. your frustration had built and you found yourself crying with the rest of them after their loss to shiratorizawa. the third years vowed to stay for the spring inter high tournament, and you let out a sigh of relief. you had one more tournament with your boys. fuck a romantic soulmate. you had your platonic ones right here.
you all slowly exited the gym and you once again retreated to the bathroom, freshening up and removing your jacket. you were far too sweaty from anxiety and hugging the boys.
you looked down at the six tallies, resigned. it was whatever. shit happens.
you were met with both makki and mattsun whispering when you exited. you raised your brow, suspicious of the plotting best friends.
“y/n! come on, we’re going for a walk before we have to get on the bus,” makki softly smiled, clearly exhausted.
“i’ll hold your jacket,” matsukawa piped up, taking it from your arms. you three walked through the halls, idly chatting to distract yourselves from the somber feeling in your chests. rounding the corner, you stiffened. at the start of the secluded hallway stood shiratorizawa. the two boys on either side of you were strangly calm, as if they knew this would happen
“let’s take another route,” you suggested, wanting to save them from the exasperation of passing the winning team.
“it’s fine y/n,” makki smiled at you, gripping your arm. as you passed shiratorizawa, his grip became damn near painful.
“ow makki what the fuck-“ you started looking down to rub at the now sore skin on your arm. you froze. IIIIIII. it stared back at you, mocking you. you turned around and walked by the group of boys again, staring at your arm. another tally appeared.
IIIIIIII
you glanced between your arm and the boys, clearly panicked. makki and mattsun watched from a distance, slightly amused by your reaction. however, their eyes were not the only one on you. the “guess monster” had quickly figured out why you were pacing by them, staring intently at your arm. he counted eight marks. he subtly glanced at his teammates forearms, earning some confused looks. wakatoshi, ever clueless, had completely missed the marks building up on his arm.
tendou grabbed him and rubbed at his forearm.
“tendou, what do you need,” his voice tapered off as he noticed the marks. with tendou’s obvious looks between him and the pretty girl standing on the other side of the hallway, he quickly realized what was happening.
internally you were freaking out. how the fuck were you supposed to know which one of the 10+ boys standing in front you were your soulmate? should you just walk up and ask?
you were so lost in your own thoughts that you didn’t notice the tall man approach you until he was looming over you.
“may i see your arm?” for the second time today, ushijima startled you. without thinking you held it out. his strong hands grazed tallies on your arm. to your surprise he leaned down and placed a kiss on the marks adorning your skin and glanced back at you with a soft look in his eyes.
“hello, i’m ushijima. i never caught your name.”
“it’s y/n,” you breathed out, relieved. then it hit you.
“oikawa is going to kill me!” you squealed. ushijima looked back at you quizzically, “why does it matter so much?”
“you two are rivals,” the exasperation was clear in your voice. ushijima just responded by knitting his eyebrows together, clearly not understanding why this had you distraught. “you don’t have to deal with him pouting and being a brat over this, i do,” you said with wide eyes. ushijima just chuckled at you. he took out his phone and handed it to you, “put your number in, i want to see my soulmate again soon,” he paused, then added, “you could come to our celebratory dinner with us.”
you looked at him incredulously, then gestured to your uniform. he simply squeezed your hand and pulled you into a surprisingly firm hug. leaning down so his lips were level with your ear, he whispered, “oikawa is going to have to cope with this. i don’t want to lose you. what are you doing tonight?”
“after i spend time with my team? nothing as far as i know,” you answered honestly.
“meet me at the park, i want to get to know you,” he stated bluntly. ushijima was full of rough edges and unending honesty. for the third time today, he had you flushing. you were sure it wouldn’t be the last.

What about us? Oikawa x Male Reader
Despite having to be at work at 6am on Monday, spent all Sunday night writing this up. Anyone else unable to get a wink of sleep when an idea gets stuck in their head?
h/c hair color, d/n dogs name, d/t dog type, n/n nickname
Angsty. Also SPOILERS from the manga. If you haven’t read the manga and are only on the anime, there are spoilers ahead. Sorry. Also pretty long.
What about us?
The snow gently fell towards the ground. Y/n felt a shiver run through his body, but despite the breeze, y/n enjoyed winter and the blanket of snow that covered the city. Indeed, the way it reflected the light never ceased to amaze him.
The h/c was pulled out of his trance by d/n, pulling forcibly on the leash, eager to get to the park and the lure of freedom to run. Y/n gave his dog a quick pat on the head and resumed his stroll towards the park.
He wasn’t the only one out. New years preparation had people shopping, decorating, visiting shrines, and in general enjoying the festive air with friends and family. However, y/n was content enjoying the fresh air that filled his lungs with each breath on his own. Continuing his walk to the city park in peace and quiet y/n sighed in content, d/n pulling on the leash again, wishing for y/n to move just a little bit faster. And when a shrill voice called out to him, y/n momentarily wished that he did indeed move faster.
“Y/n-chan, is that you!?”
He turned his head towards the voice, recognizing it as his heart skipped a beat.
Tooru? But isn’t he in Argentina?
“Y/n-chan, it is you!” He called, running across the street to greet his old classmate.
Oikawa came in for a hug, but rather than meeting y/n he found a d/t leaping up at him. D/n, seeing a chance to make a new friend, and being the attention whore he was, hoped to receive pets and scratches that y/n, at times, can be stingy on. At least from d/n’s point of view.
Oikawa stumbled as the dog leapt at him again, licking Oikawa’s face. Y/n can do naught but laugh,
“D/n get down!” He called, pulling on the leash a bit to take a hold of the animal, rubbing his sides to get him to calm down.
“Sorry about that Oikawa,” y/n says, still laughing a bit at the brunette.
“No you’re not,” Oikawa pouted.
“Oh, don’t be so dramatic. D/n just wants some love,” y/n said, still petting the animal, “Anyways, what are you doing here? Moving back from Argentina?”
“No, no, just visiting family and friends for the New Years.”
“I see,” y/n said, trying to feign disinterest.
Y/n’s laughter faded away as d/n was content with the attention he was now getting from his master. Oikawa let his eyes wander and y/n kept his attention on his companion, not knowing what to say to his former boyfriend. It had been years since they last spoke.
“So...since I’m around,” Oikawa starts, hand running through his hair, a sheepish smile on his face, “maybe we can get lunch together? To catch up?”
Y/n shook his head, “No thanks. I don’t really think I’ll have the time,”
Oikawa’s smile fell from his face. “Oh, sorry to bother you. I guess I’ll see you,”
He begins to turn around, but y/n’s voice stops him in place. “Wait. I just don’t get a lot of free time. But catching up sounds nice. You’re welcome to join d/n and I on our walk.”
Oikawa brightened up immediately, “I was on some errands for my sibling, but his seems more important.” He gives a mischievous smirk and falls in beside you as you continue your way towards the park.
“I caught all your games at the Olympics, you know,” y/n said, trying to fill the uneasy silence that had sprung between them
“You did!? All of them?” Oikawa asked, his chocolate eyes seeming to glow as he looked at y/n.
“Yea, all of them. I’ve watched all of your games since we were in middle school together…”
Y/n cheered along with the rest of the Seijoh crowd as the freak quick attack of Karasuno’s number ten was slammed back down on their own side of the court. Aoba Johsai won the third set, carrying them further in the Interhigh tournament. The teams shook hands and came to thank the crowd, Y/n’s boyfriend giving him a thumbs up as he approached the line, which y/n returned, smiling and cheering him on.
Y/n turned to leave the stands. Entering the halls beyond, y/n ran into Oikawa’s arms, squeezing the (shorter/taller) male into a bear hug.
“Congrats babes!”
“Ugh, thanks y/n-chan”
“You were great!” Y/n said, giving him a quick peck on the lips.
Oikawa blushed, still unused to the physical affection y/n gave him right in front of his team. Even two years into their relationship, he could never control his emotions, or stop the blush from rising in his cheeks whenever y/n called him his. Or jumped into his arms. The team just chuckled, some teasing Oikawa as they passed. Iwaizumi just stared blankly at the two of them, unable to comprehend how y/n was able to hand Shittykawa’s nonsense day in and day out.
“We’re leaving soon trashykawa, so hurry up!” Iwaizumi said before passing by with the rest of the team, leaving Y/n and Oikawa alone in the gym’s hall.
“Thanks for cheering for me n/n. I always play better knowing you’re in the crowd,”
“Oh, Tooru, you know I’d never miss a game! Now you ready for tonight?”
“Well, actually…”
The smile immediately fell from Y/n’s face. He knew what was coming. Tooru was cancelling their date this weekend. For volleyball. Again. Resisting the sigh building in his chest, y/n shook away his disappointment and forced his smile back onto his face.
“It’s okay Tooru. I know you need to focus on volleyball right now,”
“Y/n-chan, I’m sorry, it’s just…”
“You don’t need to explain babes,” Y/n interrupted, “I know how important this is to you, especially since we’re third years. Last chance, right?”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you y/n chan!” Oikawa said, squeezing his boyfriend tight and peppering him with kisses on his check, “I promise we’ll spend all Sunday afternoon together once we win it all!”
Y/n smiled sadly, “Go get em my Lion. Rule the Court!”
Tooru squeezed Y/n into a tight hug once more, forcing the breath out of him and turned to join his team. A few steps away he turned to apologize to Y/n once more, but when he did, the hall was quiet and empty. Tooru walked back towards his team, his eyes set on only one thing; defeating Ushiwaka once and for all.
Y/n wasn’t able to meet with Oikawa after the Shiratorizawa game, teh team having already left with the coach. Y/n didn’t even head to the cafe for their date. He knew Tooru wouldn’t show up. Instead he strolled up to his house, Oikawa’s mother opening the door before he even had a chance to knock.
“Ah, there you are Y/n, right on time, as always. He’s upstairs.”
“Thanks,” y/n said, climbing the stairs two at a time. As he entered Tooru’s room, he found his boyfriend curled up in a ball on his bed.
“Tooru?” Y/n called
“Y/n-chan, what are you doing here?” he sniffled.
“Comforting you. As I always do. Besides, I figured you’d forgotten about our date.”
Tooru turned towards Y/n, his eyes red and puffy and wide with guilt. He began to sit up, but Y/n sat down on the bed and pulled him back down onto the mattress. Y/m wrapped his arms around Tooru and pulled him close, intertwining their ggs, giving him a quick peck on the forehead.
“I’m here Tooru. It’s okay,”
Tooru sniffed and pulled Y/n in closer, “I’m sorry, it's just…”
“It’s okay. We can cuddle a bit, then go practice your serves and end with some ice cream if you want. Not the worst date we’ve ever had.” Y/n said, rubbing circles on Tooru’s back, and then get ready to beat Ushiwaka next time.”
“You're the best n/n! I don’t deserve you,”
“I know. And you don’t. You’re lucky you give great cuddles. And you’re cute,” Y/n joked, “but, I’m here for you. I’m here for you.”
Y/n let Tooru cry in his arms, letting his boyfriend vent his frustration and anger, allowing Y/n to hold onto him, to pull the shattered pieces back together. And then Tooru led him to the gym where Y/n chased balls and helped Tooru serve the rest of his frustration and self-doubt away. He spent their entire postponed date on building Tooru back up. Comforting his pain, reassuring him and pushing down the doubts building in his mind, doing everything to assure the volleyball captain that he was not only an amazing player and setter, but a great boyfriend as well. And finally, Y/n got an hour back with his boyfriend when they could take one damned hour away from volleyball and Ushiwaka as they walked hand in hand through the town, enjoying some ice cream as they went.
And Y/n said that it was okay. He loved Tooru, and despite everything, Tooru loved him. Despite the cancellations, despite his obsession with beating Ushiwaka, and the constant beating himself down, Y/n knew that Tooru was sincere when he said he loved him back.
“And, what did ya think of the games?” Oikawa asked, excited to hear that, even after all the years, he still had his number one fan watching his back.
“You were amazing. I can see all the hard work paid off. Your game against Japan and those Karasuno blokes was the highlight of the tournament.”
Oikawa nodded, remembering the match against all those who he had sworn to rise above.
“I was actually there for that one, you know,”
“What!? You were?”
Y/n nodded, “It was nice to see you play in person again. Anyways, how is Argentina? Meet anyone special?”
“Argentina is amazing! Best career decision I could have ever made, but what about you? What have you been doing?” Oikawa asked, turning the conversation towards Y/n. Y/n didn’t fail to notice that Oikawa had dodged one of his questions, but he let it pass.
“Oh, I’ve been getting by,” Y/n said as they reached the park. Moving towards the fenced section for dogs, Y/n stepped inside, allowing d/n off of his lease, as there were no other dogs around, and throwing a tennis ball, which d/n gleefully bound after.
“I’ve been working in animation.”
“That’s what you always wanted Y/n! You got your dream too!” Oikawa cheered, patting you on the back,
“It’s not the happy ending though, Oikawa.”
Oikawa looked at you confused. “Wasn’t that your dream? Using your art to help create anime?”
“It was. It is. It’s just,” Y/n sighed, suddenly deflated, and Oikawa took another look at Y/n, but this time he truly saw him. He saw the bags under the h/c eyes and the red of exhaustion and worry that rimmed Y/n’s eyes. He saw the stooped shoulders and y/n’s slouch, as if the world was bearing all its weight down on his friend, and it took everything he had just to force himself out of bed each morning. He saw the fake smile Y/n gave him, to stave off his worry. It was the very same Y/n flashed at him while they were dating, telling him that he was okay, when really he was tearing apart inside. And finally he searched y/n’s eyes once more and noticed how the light inside, which always filled Oikawa with butterflies, was faded and dim.
“Y/n,” he said, barely a whisper, his entire focus now on Y/n, “what happened to you?”
They weren’t together anymore. Y/n didn’t really love him anymore. But under that gaze, beneath the concern and care in Oikawa’s eyes, Y/n broke, a tear beginning to drop from his eyes.
“It’s just,” Y/n let out a deep breath, not even realizing what was about to come out of his mouth, “I work seven days a week. I never have time to take a day off, because if I do, I don’t get paid. You know how much I get paid for my art? You know how much I get paid for dozens of hours of animation? One hundred dollars. One hundred. I have seven different animation projects at any one time, and despite working over seventy hours each week, I can still barely afford rent for a god damned studio apartment, let alone everything else.”
Y/n’s voice raised and as it did, so too did his emotions, and the dam he had built up; it didn’t just crack, it burst. Half-sobbing, half-yelling, he continued, unaware of how much he was holding in or how he was falling apart in front of an ex he had spoken to in years.
“And d/n has a vet bill coming up, which I know I don’t have money for. And I wouldn’t even have a dog in my situation, but he was my moms, and...well…”
Y/n’s voice trailed off as his tears and sobs became too much for him to speak through. Oikawa put his hand on the h/c’s shoulder. Oikawa had known Y/n’s mother was sick. She had been for years. All throughout high school she battled cancer, teetering back and forth between recovery and death. Oikawa hadn’t realized she had passed away.
“Y/n, I’m so sorry,” Oiwaka said, but his friend couldn’t hear him.
“And, I just couldn’t let him go and…” he choked between sobs, “but I know I don’t give d/n the time he deserves, and I don’t know what to do. I’m angry all the time because I work in an industry worth billions of dollars, but I, and hundreds of other animators, barely get paid for our never ending work to get anime’s out, and now matter what we do or say, nothing ever changes. And some days I just get up and want to quit because I can’t do it anymore. It’s making me hate art and animation. It’s making me hate my dream and I just want to give it all up. I just...just don’t know what to do…”
Y/n slumped to the snow covered ground, his knees giving way. D/n, sensing his owners distress, strolled over to y/n, dropping the ball at his feet. D/n raised his head up against Y/n’s, nuzzling it against him and licking at his tear stained cheeks.
Y/n gave a dry chuckle, “stop d/n,” he said, scratching the dogs ears before standing up, “I’m sorry Oikawa,” Y/n began, wiping away his teams, “I didn’t mean to…”
Y/n didn’t get a chance to finish as Oikawa had pulled him into a close hug, pulling Y/n’s head to his shoulder. “I’m sorry,” Oikawa whispered in his ear, “I’m sorry you’ve had to hold so much on your shoulders alone again. It’s okay. I’m here for you. I’m here for you.”
And much to his embarrassment, Y/n cried into Oikawa’s shoulder, cried in his arms. His mothers death, the sense of hopelessness as he tried to make his way in Japan, the feelings of his dream dying in front of his eyes. Y/n let it all go while Oikawa held him, rubbing his back slowly and whispering to Y/n that he was here, that it was okay.
A few minutes passed before Y/m pulled away from Oikawa, once again wiping away tears.
“How embarrassing. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean our ‘catching up’ walk to turn into my sob fest,” Y/n chuckled.
“Hey, it's alright. It’s not as if I haven’t done the same to you. It looked like you really needed that. It’s okay.” Oikawa said, stepping back to give Y/n his space. “How long since your mother?”
“Two years.”
“I’m sorry,”
“Thanks,” Y/n said, throwing the tennis ball for d/n once more.
“Your father?”
“He left. I always was his great disappointment.”
“I’m so sorry Y/n,” Oikawa repeated, unsure of what else he can say to comfort his friend.
“It’s okay. I got past that one.”
“And you’ll get past all the rest,”
“I...I don’t know,” Y/n said, looking back down at d/n.
“Hey,” Oikawa said, lifting Y/n’s chin and turning his eyes towards his own, “The Y/n I know doesn’t give up that easily, not after what you’ve been through.”
Y/n gave him that ghost smile once more, but before he could speak, Oikawa continued.
“So here's what we can do. You clearly need some help,” Oikawa said, sticking his tongue out at Y/n and pulling down on the skin below his eye, “So I’m going to help you.”
“Oikawa, I’ll be fine…”
“Be quiet Y/n!” Oikawa said, his voice high and childish, just like back in high school, “We’re gonna get some exercise running with d/n. Then we’re going to the store and buying some food. You will graciously invite me over for dinner and we’re going to have a good time.”
“Oikawa, I have work to do tonight,” Y/n protested
“What’d you say? I couldn’t hear you,”
“Oikawa,” Y/n said with a growl
“Doesn’t sound like an invite to me,”
Y/n sighed, “Oikawa...you’re not going to stop, are you?”
“Nope.” he said with his stupid, adorable grin on his face, “but really, I wasn’t there for you in high school, not like I should have been. I’m going to be here for you now, as your friend.”
“Just as a friend, right?” Y/n asked to clarify
“Don’t worry, just as a friend,” Oikawa said, putting his arm around Y/n, “Now let’s play with d/n already,”
They stayed in the park for over an hour, playing with d/n, running him to make up for lost exercise. For the first time in what felt like years Y/n laughed, truly, freely laughed. Mainly at Oikawa being an idiot. But Y/n knew he was doing it for him.
And Oikawa, each time he was able to pull a laugh from Y/n, but slipping in the show and having d/n trample him, or reminiscing about times they pissed off Iwa-chan, could feel the blood pumping through his body, his heart pounding in his chest. It wasn’t what they were, but it was something. The awkward air between them when Oikawa first approached had dispersed like dust in the wind, and they were friends again. It was enough.
Keeping his promise, Oikawa dragged Y/n to the store and went inside, shopping for their dinner (and then some, much to Y/n’s chagrin), and followed Y/n home.
D/n collapsed on his bed right away, falling asleep, content with the day’s excitement. Y/n just looked around his tiny apartment and sighed once more, having forgotten about the disaster he called home.
“Sorry for the mess.”
“Wow. Y/n, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a piece of clothing on your floor before, and now...I don’t know where to begin,” Oikawa teased.
He was right. Y/n was always organized, meticulous, and immaculate, but the stress of the past year had taken a toll on Y/n. Work stuff overed the small table and dest in the room, and the two chairs as well. Clothing, probably dirty, was strewn about the room, dirty dishes and half eaten meals covered the remaining space. And the small bed in the corner was a mess of sheets, pillows and half folded clothing.
“It's been a tough year and a half,” Y/n muttered.
“Well, we’re going to forget about that tonight. Clean yourself up and I’ll start our dinner.”
“Since when could you cook?” Y/n teased
“Just go get cleaned up!” Oikawa ordered
` Y/n nodded. There was no point arguing anymore either. His small apartment had a main room, where his entire life was stored with a small kitchenette, and then a tiny bathroom with a shower.
Y/n turned on the hot water and stepped in, wondering what he had just gotten himself into. He hadn’t meant to break down in front of his ex like that. He hadn’t meant to bring him home for dinner either. It wasn’t that Y/n didn’t like Oikawa anymore, but he just couldn’t get involved again. Stepping out of the shower he resolved to keep his feelings hidden and returned to his one room, seeing Oikawa scanning through his work.
“I thought you were making dinner,” Y/n said, making Oikawa jump.
“Uh, I am. Sorry, I just saw some of your work, and then kept looking.”
“I see.”
“It’s amazing. You really don’t get paid for this?” he asked
“Doesn’t feel like it. Here, let me show you some of the animation work I do,” Y/n said, opening his laptop.
Y/n spent the next few minutes showing off his animation work on scenes from a growing new anime that was rapidly gaining popularity.
“And you work at least seventy hours a week and still barely make enough? What assholes,” he says, being angry for you.
“Yea. Some nights I fall asleep at the desk. Iwa-chan says I overwork myself so much that I’m hurting my body. Sound familiar?” Y/n asked.
“We’re both two stars lost in the universe, hurting ourselves in order to shine with our dreams.” Oikawa gave Y/n a sad smile, “You hang you with Iwa-chan often?”
“Not really. No time. Not since the just after the Olympics a few months ago. Anyways, dinner.”
“Yes, yes, I’m on it.”
“Sorry again for the mess. And the lack of space,” Y/n said, clearing off the chairs
“No worries. I’m actually used to it,”
“You are?”
“Yea. When I first got to Argentina, well it was rough. I didn’t know the language and had almost no money at the start. The first two years I lived just like this. And to top it all off I overworked myself. A lot. I have to learn to take care of myself.”
“Did you? Learn I mean? Doesn’t sound like you.” Y/n teased, his old smile finally emerging from its slumber.
“Nor really,” Oikawa admitted, “But I’m doing much better now. Caught a good break and even met the Karasuno shrimp in Brazil. That actually really helped. And well, now I’m doing alright.”
“You’re an Olympian. I’d say you’re a sight better than alright,” Y/n pointed out.
“It wasn’t always easy, ya know. People don’t realize what we sacrifice.”
“I know, sorry. I didn’t mean to brush aside your struggles.”
“I just want you to know, it will get better. I believe in you.”
Y/n’s true smile faded, and the ghost he’d become resurfaced. He nodded anyways, nor really wanting to talk anymore about it. He’d already cried far too much for his liking today as it was, in front of Oikawa no less. And as Oikawa served the food, they ate dinner in silence, the unease from before returning like a storm cloud that just wouldn’t pass through.
“Thanks Oikawa,” Y/n mumbled as they finished, “I’ll clean this up,”
“Nonsense, I’ll do it. You relax. Is there anything else I can do for you,” Oikawa asked, winking at the end.
Y/n suddenly tensed. The last thing he wanted was Oikawa attempting to flirt with him right now.
“Jeez, calm down, I’m joking,” Oikawa said when he noticed Y/n tense up, “I said as a friend, and I meant it.”
True to his word, Oikawa cleaned and they hung out. Sharing stories, reminiscing on their days at Seijoh. And never once did Oikawa overstep his bounds or overstayed his welcome. Never once did he try to flirt, never once even asked or expected more for what he did for Y/n. Oikawa had grown, and for a moment, Y/n was really glad Oikawa was there for him, as his friend.
“Do you ever wonder how things would’ve turned out if you went with me?” But of course, in typical Oikawa fashion, he just had to ruin the moment. Maybe he hadn’t grown that much after all. But then, maybe Y/n hadn’t either, as his guard had to slip at that exact moment.
“Oh, Tooru…” Y/n said fondly, a weary look in his eyes.
After the loss to Shiratorizawa, Tooru threw himself back into volleyball with a fire that burned so hot, it threatened to consume the boy who possessed it. Y/n went to every game, even practice when he could. Tooru had a dream. Tooru needed Y/n and Y/n loved him. But Y/n needed Tooru too.
Y/n’s mother fell ill again, and his father was less than pleased with his son. The stress built until Y/n collapsed in class, in a puddle of exhaustion and tears. It was only then, after months of suffering that Tooru even noticed his boyfriend's pain, his terror. Tooru carried him to the infirmary. It was then he saw the fear and fatigue in his beloved’s eyes. Guilt overwhelmed him. They spent the weekend together, and for once, Toorus was there, entirely and completely for Y/n. With Tooru, he could pull himself through.
But Oikawa Tooru had a one track mind. Volleyball and rising above his nemesis, Wakatoshi Ushijima; nothing else could compete for space in his mind. Missed dates and meetups, waiting at the school gates for an hour, only to walk home alone and miserable. Y/n suffered, but knew that, despite everything, Tooru sincerely loved him.
Tooru always apologized. He was so sincere. He never meant to forget, to hurt Y/n, and he always made it up to him. A nigher here, a lunch there. But Oikawa was so singularly focused that it never lasted long. Y/n had to beg, or be on the verge of collapse for his boyfriend to momentarily let go of his obsessions with volleyball to focus solely on their relationship. But it was only ever for a fleeting moment.
Then Y/n’s mother’s health declined again, and as it all piled up on Y/n’s back like gravity forcing him down to earth from orbit, he burned up and broke apart. He couldn’t take it all anymore. He couldn’t help his mother, or change his abusive father, but he could take the stress of their relationship out of his life. However, that very next day, Aoba Johsai fell to Karasuno in the prefecture tournament for Spring Nationals, and a run down, broken Oikawa made his way to Y/n’s home. Still sobbing, Y/n led Oikawa to his room and helped him as he did all those times before. Maybe now that it was finally over, they could fix their relationship. But that was naive.
Y/n sat in the cafe, glaring at his phone, as if he was wishing he could stop the clock from turning. Maybe he hoped that it was running fast. But it wasn’t. Oikawa was late. Again. Y/n sipped at his hot cocoa as a tear slipped from his eyes.
It was supposed to be better. Volleyball was over. It was supposed to be easier. Y/n thought. But every time he...I can’t do this anymore.
“That idiot.”
Y/n jumped at the angry growl and looked up to see Iwaizumi standing next to his table.
“Iwa-chan? What are you doing here?” Y/n asked
“Shittykawa is an idiot.”
“He’s not coming...is he?” Y/n asked, though he didn’t need to. He already knew the answer.
“He was only supposed to practice for ten more minutes. I was on my way home, but then wanted to check in on you. To make sure he got here.”
“Thanks Iwa-chan. Is he still at the gym?”
“Probably, knowing him. I’ll whack him good for you tomorrow.”
“No need Iwaizumi. We’re done.” Y/n said, getting up and brushing past Iwaizumi
“I’m sorry Y/n,”
“Thanks for letting me know, Iwa-chan.”
Y/n took to the street, turning back towards Aoba Johsai, his blood pumping furiously through his veins. As he approached the gym, he could still see the lights on, and as he made it to the doors, he heard the tell tale sound of a volleyball pounding against the gym floor. Y/n entered, not even trying to hold in his tears.
Oikawa didn’t even turn, “I’m almost down Iwa-chan, don’t worry.”
“I’m not Iwaizumi,” Y/n sniffled.
Oikawa heard Y/n’s trembling voice, his sniffles, and turned with a look of pure horror and guilt on his face, the voice jolting the forgotten promise of a Friday night date; cafe, dinner, movie, and cuddles. He rushed over to Y/n, apologies rushing out of his mouth, and tried to embrace his boyfriend. But Y/n shoved him away before he couldn. Hard. And Oikawa stumbled back.
“Y/n?”
“Again Tooru. You forgot again! You don’t even have a tournament coming up and you still forget me for volleyball!” The venom in Y/n’s voice ripped through Oikawa.
“But Y/n, I still need to practice,” he argued.
“Is that practice more important than me? Than my feelings? What about what I need?”
“Y/n-chan, that’s not fair…”
“No!” Y/n screamed, jabbing his finger into Oikawa’s chest, “You don’t get to do that. I’ve accepted cancelled dates and rainchecks. No matter how hard I try, the plan is somehow always rearranged. I’ve been there for you, for three years. Every win. Every loss. I spent dates helping you practice. You don’t get to do that. It’s not fair that you can’t take one moment for me unless I literally collapse!”
“Y/n, I’m sorry,” Oikawa said, and the sincerity in his voice, in his eyes, tugged at Y/n’s heart. But he forced himself on.
“I know you are. But I can’t do it anymore. My mother is still sick. My father is a homophobic ass. You are supposed to be my escape, my pillar too, just like I’ve been for you. But I find myself ever more stressed because of you. I can’t stop worrying about if you’re going to grace me with your presence for oncfe. I can’t do it anymore. You are so obsessed with volleyball, with beating Ushiwaka, that you don’t see anything else through your tunnel vision. You don’t see the blood and tears left behind in your rampage. I can’t do it anymore,” Y/n screamed through his sobs at the end. It was over.
“Y/n, I can’t choose between you and volleyball, I love both. I need both,” Oikawa said, tears beginning to glisten in his chocolate eyes.
Y/n took a deep breath and pulled his temper back under reign. “I know, Oikawa, I know.”
Oikawa flinched at the use of his last name. That hadn’t happened since before they were dating.
“I know. It’s your dream. You can’t give that up.”
“I love you too, n/n”
“I know Oikawa, I believe you do. But clearly you can’t do both. We;re done. I need to do what’ve best for me right now. You’ll be fine.”
Y/n turned to walk out, but Oikawa had grabbed his wrist. Angry e/c glared at Oikawa.
“Let go.” Y/n hissed, pulling away from Oikawa and storming out the gym doors. Oikawa followed him out, only to see Y/n crying in Iwaizumi’s arms.
“You moron,” was all he said before turning to walk Y/n home.
“I’m leaving.”
A cold, early spring breeze, pushed its way across the park, and Y/n shivered. Yet it wasn’t for the cold. He ran his hands through his h/c locks and looked at everything but the boy in front of him. He noticed the new buds on the trees, and the hint of green pushing out of the thawed ground. Spring was always his favorite season; new life, new beginnings, a chance to start anew. His gaze moved up towards the clouds passing overhead.
“I know” Y/n said
“And?”
“And what?” Y/n responded back, tone devoid of any feeling
“What about us?”
“What about us, Oikawa?”
“I still love you Y/n,”
“What do you want me to say Oikawa? That I’ll jump on a plane with you, to Argentina? Leave everything behind? Even if I wanted to, what would I do? Sit in your apartment, waiting for you to come home? After how you treated me?
They were on speaking terms again. It had taken a few months, but Y/n was willing to be in the same room as Oikawa again, at least as long as someone else was there. But this was the first they’ve been alone.
“I...I,”
Y/n sighed and pushed down his love that still shone for the brunette. Despite everything, Oikawa was always honest and sincere.
“I know. I believe you do. But am I supposed to leave my sick mother? No Oikawa, this is it.”
“I’m sorry,”
“It’s a little late for that. I need to get home. Good luck, Oikawa.”
“Do you ever think of…”
“Oh, Tooru…” Y/n stopped as the name slipped from his lips, hoping Oikawa didn’t notice. Oikawa’s eyes widened in surprise at the use of his first name, but carried on as if nothing happened.
“I do, sometimes. When volleyball isn’t going well, I think of that moment in the park.”
“Honestly,” Y/n admitted, “so do I.”
Oikawa perked up.
“But, really, what would’ve happened. I’d have no job, nothing to do, nothing but to wait for you, and we both know how that went.”
“You’re right. I know it. Doesn’t mean I don’t think about it.”
“I know,” Y/n said, “and I’m not angry at you. Well, I was, and I was very hurt. But I know that volleyball was always going to claim the larger piece of your heart, and with everything going on, I just couldn’t do it. We had different lives I guess. But I’m not mad any more.”
“Thanks. For not being angry anymore,” Oikawa said, perking up a moment later, “Anyways, let's put in a movie we can laugh at and then we’ll have a sleepover, just like the good old days. Don’t worry, I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“Oikawa, we’re…”
“Just friends, I know, but do you really want to be alone tonight?”
Y/n shook his head, “Not really. Thanks...Tooru.”
Just as Tooru promised, they laughed with a good movie, and Y/n felt his stress melt away for the first time in nearly a year, all his adult worries fading away with the sound of Oikawa’s voice. And just as he said, he never tried to push past being only friends. If Tooru still felt the same, he hid it well. All except his chocolate eyes which gave him away, gazing a half a second too long on the male.
Morning came, and after Tooru made them a full breakfast, the two took d/n back to the park for his morning walk.
“I’m heading back to Argentina tomorrow.”
“I guess this is it then…”
“You know, my offer still stands.”
“To go with you?” Y/n asked.
“Yes. You mentioned last night that during the pandemic that you worked mostly from home. You could do the same in South America.”
“And what else Tooru? I’m not sure I want to leave Japan. Besides, I’d only end up on the back burner to volleyball. No. I won’t go.” Y/n said, his eyes determined.
“I understand. It was silly to ask. Give me your phone though,”
“Why?” Y/n asked, handing over the device.
“There,” Oikawa said after typing in a set of numbers, “You have my new number. We can keep in touch, and talk when things get too real, as friends. And I can curse out your awful bosses for you.”
“I could do that.” Y/n said, his smile returning from the graveyard it had been lost to for so long.
“And during the off season you can come visit me. You and Iwa-chan both.”
“Tooru, you know I can’t get the time off.”
“Don’t care. You’re gonna visit. Or I’ll tell Iwa-chan how beat down you actually were and he’ll drag you by your ear to the airport.”
“You wouldn’t dare.” Y/n challenged
“Try me,” Oikawa said, sticking his tongue out at Y/n, pulling up Iwaizumi’s number on his phone.
“Fine, fine, just don’t call him. I’ll try to visit, okay?”
“Good. I should get home though. I never did tell my family I’d be out all night. It was good to see you Y/n.”
“It was. And thank you. I needed this.”
“Anytime, it’s what any good captain would do,” Tooru said, turning to walk away
“And Tooru?”
“Yea?”
Y/n’s eyes were glued towards the ground, a slight blush rising on his face. “Oh, nothing, nevermind.”
“You’re blushing like a schoolgirl and you think I’m going to let this go. Tell me.” He said, stepping closer to Y/n.
“I...I won’t wait for you. But if the day ever comes when there is space in your heart, and we’re both still wandering through this world alone...well, maybe we could try again…” Y/n said, looking up and meeting Oikawa’s gorgeous chocolate eyes.
Oikawa nodded, giving Y/n one last final hug before heading back home, and eventually to where his heart really rested; his volleyball team, and Y/n, back to his apartment, with a new outlook and determination to build on his dream.
Sorry this was so long. Also was originally supposed to be an Oikawa x Male Reader x Iwaizumi, but clearly that didn’t happen. Story kind of took over itself.
Also, if you don’t know, animators in Japan are actually living in poverty despite the industry being so damn lucrative. They barely get paid anything for their art, so most of the people creating your favorite anime’s are barely making it by. If you don’t know much on it, here’s a Nytimes article that talks a bit about it.

Might be a part II. Don’t know, depends on if inspiration hits in the middle of the night forcing me to write.

ch. 19: comfort
Her foot bounced, eyes flitting from the rallying ball, to her boys, to the clock. The whistle blew, a sigh of relief leaving her. They had easily won back to back sets, and now she’d have just enough time to catch the last bit of the Seijoh match.
“Congratulations on your win.” She bowed to them before looking at Coach Saito. “I’ll take my leave now, Coach.”
“Have fun, (L.Name)-chan.” He smiled, giving her a nod.
As (Name) turned to race off, a voice called out, rooting her there. “I will come with you.”
Olive eyes met (e/c) orbs as she hesitated for a moment longer. “I would like to see how Karasuno plays.”
The Omega nodded before walking away, picking her way through the crowds. Behind her, Ushijima was stopped left and right by reporters congratulating him on his win, asking him questions about U19 and his expectations for his post-graduate life. (Name) ignored it, easily finding herself beside the crowd of teal, picking a spot near the railing as she eagerly watched her mate play. Satisfaction filled her - it had been too long since she was able to support him. Peeling off her Shiratorizawa jacket and shoving that into her duffel, she switched into her teal Aoba Johsai jacket - thankful that she was wearing black leggings instead of the maroon track-suit she typically would have to wear.
Brown eyes looked up into the crowd, easily finding hers. (Name) cupped her mouth, cheering loudly for her pack-mates who glanced up at her during their time-out. Mattsun gave her a lopsided grin along with a cheeky wave. The underclassmen all waved, giving her various thumbs-up and nods. Oikawa had his eyes closed, sitting apart from his packmates in order to retain his focus. Iwaizumi nodded at her, not showing any sign of emotion but she could tell. Love, appreciation, and gratitude pulsed through her body. (Name) cheekily sent him a flying kiss, causing the male to roll his eyes at her though his heart fluttered at the sight. The whistle blew, ending the time out and the match continued.
******
(Name)’s jaw dropped as she leaned over the railing - watching in shock as the ball bounced. The whistle blew and she was gone, racing down the stairs towards the court. How did they get better so quickly? Her heart ached, knowing how badly her pack-mates wanted this. Her mark pulsed with anguish, causing her footsteps to quicken. She ducked into the court, ignoring the signs and ignoring the people as she launched herself into Iwaizumi’s arms. He buried his face into her hair, shoulders shaking slightly. The hot droplets splashed down and soaked her shirt.
Loud slaps hit his back as he lurched in her grip - the scents of his pack-mates washing over them. “Go greet the audience,” she murmured. “I’ll be with the coaches.”
Iwaizumi’s grip tightened over her, squeezing her almost painfully as reluctance filled his senses. He didn’t want to lose himself when they separated - needing her to ground himself. (Name) pressed a dainty kiss to his cheek, scenting him slightly. “You’ll be okay,” she cooed into his ear before she stepped away. Iwaizumi nodded, fists clenching as he made his way to stand along the rest of his team - his mate slipping away to stand beside the coaches.
“Thank you!” The boys chirped in varying degrees of emotional turmoil - bowing to the audience members. As soon as he had straightened up, she was right beside him once more. Her hands clasped over Iwaizumi’s as they made their way off of the court, squeezing it tightly as their fingers intertwined. Her thumb swirled around the crescent-moons he’d absent-mindedly left on his palms.
Iwaizumi blinked furiously, looking down at his mate who kept her face neutral and forward. He was thankful for her - for her calmness. His own emotions ran rampant, making it difficult for him to steady himself as he plopped along beside her. She had been beside him through every single victory, through every single loss. Love blurred his eyes as he pulled her closer, squeezing back. (Name) leaned her body into his, subtly scenting him while they walked.
“I love you,” he murmured for her ears only.
“And I love you.”
She pressed her plush lips against his knuckles, their marks pulsing with warmth and affection. (Name) shifted, looking back to the rest of her packmates just as another third-year threw himself at Iwaizumi, dragging him away from her grasp. Her heart leapt as she looked at their interaction, a small smile on her face.
The Omega went towards the first-years, standing beside Kumini and Kindaichi. “You did well.”
Kindaichi jumped, a shiver running down his spine. “I didn’t know you were here, (Name)-san.”
“Of course, how could I miss my boys' play?” She teased, sadness and pity in her eyes as the sorrow in Kindaichi’s eyes.
He shrugged, averting his eyes and staring at his sneakers.
“C’mon, let’s go get ramen! Oikawa’s treat,” (Name) announced, turning to face the rest of her pack.
“Hey!” Oikawa protested, frowning.
“You missed your serves,” Makki teased, his face lightening up. He knew what (Name) was doing. Typically whenever the team faced a loss, the Omega would host dinner at the apartment and she would invite the rest of the pack over to make sure they were well-fed and resting instead of punishing themselves.
Kyotani blew past the pack, storming off in the direction of the gym doors. (Name) made a move to go after him, knowing that he wasn’t used to playing in tournaments like the rest of the pack was when a hand grabbed her shoulder. “Let him go.” She looked back, staring into Mattsun’s hooded eyes. “We all cope differently.”
She frowned but nodded. “Let’s go then, yeah?”
(Name) linked arms with Mattsun and Makki, leading the duo towards the doors of the stadium as the rest of the pack trickled on behind them. Iwaizumi walked with Oikawa, making up the rear as everybody else followed.
Upon entering the restaurant, (Name) sat down at the table, offering the seat to Kindaichi and Kumini who slid in. Iwaizumi and Mattsun occupied the other seats beside her, Iwaizumi resting his chin on her shoulder as he took the time to breathe in her soothing scent. All throughout the meal, (Name) was ordering them food, ensuring that they were eating and drinking water as she helped keep their minds off of their woes. She constantly reminded them of how well they had played, mentioning things she noticed that had changed from the first time she’d seen them play until now. When Kindaichi started crying, she scooted closer, letting the male cry into her shoulder as she kept offering him napkins in order to wipe his streaming nose. Iwaizumi watched, resting his head on his palm as exhaustion washed over his entire body. He kept fading in and out mentally, too tired to even think about what had happened as the realisation of the loss really settled.
This wouldn’t be the end, not for him.
Not by a long-shot.
*****
“Haji?”
The Omega asked hesitantly as he unlocked the door to their apartment. She had returned first, letting Iwaizumi and the rest of the third years play together one last time at the Seijoh gym as she made her way home. (Name) knew that they needed this last chance to themselves.
Iwaizumi stood in the doorway, glossy eyes staring out. (Name) could only imagine the thoughts, the self-doubt that coursed through Iwaizumi’s head and veins. Sorrow pulsed through their shared marks, causing tears to well up in her own eyes at the borrowed emotion.
Silently she took Iwaizumi’s hand, tugging him towards the bedroom. (Name) pushed Iwaizumi to sit down on the edge of the bed, tugging on his shirt so that he could change. They could shower and change the sheets tomorrow. Now, she needed to comfort her mate. As she stood next to him, her arms draped over his arms, Iwaizumi turned to bury his face into her stomach. Hot tears mixed with sweat as it dripped down his face.
“I couldn’t do it,” he muttered. Her heart clenched. “How could I be an ace if I couldn’t even score that last point for my team?”
“Haji-”
“Maybe you shouldn’t be with me,” he whines softly, the sound breaking both of their hearts. “Maybe you do deserve to be with Ushijima instead of me.”
“Don’t say that.”
“Why not?”
He leaned up, his dark brown eyes meeting hers. The silvery streaks of tears cascading down his face.
“You deserve to be with a real Alpha. Not someone who-”
“I want to be with you. I deserve to be with my bond-mate,” (Name) said firmly as she pressed a chaste kiss to his forehead. The salt of his sweat filling her senses as his pine scent dampened. “And my bond-mate deserves to be happy. Who was it that said that being good in volleyball meant having six strong players? You’re a strong player, Haji.”
“But I-”
“You did your absolute best and there’s nothing more you could do about it.”
As the Omega held Iwaizumi closer, his shoulders began to shake.
“C’mon, let’s get some rest, okay?”
Iwaizumi buried his face into his arms, curling into himself. (Name) frowned slightly, taking a seat beside him and wiggling into his arms. He tightened his grip around her shoulders, but refused to look at her. “Hey, you can’t get rid of me so quickly,” she murmured softly.
“Who said I was trying to get rid of you? You’d probably get rid of me first.”
“Hajime.”
He flinched at the sudden use of his full name, peeling his face away from his arms and looking at her. “Who am I bonded to?”
Iwaizumi swallowed. “Me.”
“You know what that means right?”
“That you’re my mate.”
“And how long will you be my mate for?”
“Always.” He replied softly, unshed tears finally spilling as he buried his face into her hair, holding her face close to his chest.
“That’s right.” (Name) gently covered his chest with kisses, her arms tightening around him. “And I’m yours, for now and always, okay?”
“I love you, (Name).”
“And I love you, Haji.”
*****
“Stay close, we don’t want to lose you.”
“Yeah, not again,” Semi snickered beside her, throwing his arm around her.
(Name) rolled her eyes, shoving his arm off. “That was your own damn fault, Semi. You should’ve told them where I went.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
The pack filed into the gym, Ushijima leading the way. It appears like Karasuno had arrived first. Her eyes scanned them. They were definitely a bunch of misfits. But these were the boys who had knocked her mate out of the running? Stolen his last chance to go to nationals? Anger flashed through her, disappearing as quickly as it had come. (Name) shook her head. As much as she knew that Iwaizumi hated Shiratorizawa and probably disliked Karasuno for beating them, perhaps Karasuno would be a sharp wake-up call for everyone.
“They beat Seijoh?” Semi asked, standing beside her and looking over her shoulder as they examined them. They both blinked in shock as the orange ball of energy leapt into the air, slamming a sharp spike straight down.
“This is going to be an interesting match,” she muttered, meeting Semi’s brown eyes.
He shrugged. “We’ll overcome them. We always do.”
“Didn’t you lose at nationals?”
“Hey! Players at nationals are very different,” Semi protested.
She chuckled, patting his chest. “Whatever helps you sleep at night, Semi-Semi.”
The male opened his mouth to protest only for Washijo to summon them. ‘We’ll talk about this later,’ he mouthed to her as he joined the rest of the pack.
*****
They shouldn’t have underestimated them.
All throughout the match, she couldn’t help but be impressed by Karasuno’s sheer tenacity, the amount of dedication and pressure that they had placed on the Shiratorizawa pack. It was clear that they had managed to rile up even Tendou, which was difficult to do to begin with.
“I hate them,” Tendou growled, glaring over at the Karasuno pack as they rested. He sat on the bench with (Name), leaning his head against her shoulder. She patted his head affectionately, silently agreeing. Ushijima drank water, resting his legs as he tried to keep his focus.
“You’re doing well, all of you,” (Name) soothed. “Don’t let them rile your feathers up, okay?”
“Just need to break their hearts,” Tendou muttered. “Destroy them.”
“You go do that, ‘Tori.”
The whistle blew, sending them all back into their respective positions. The Omega stared at the scoreboard, frowning. Karasuno had many tricks up their sleeves, but ultimately this would become a game of endurance. As a team that’s reached Nationals so many times, it’d be easy for Shiratorizawa to beat them. She had to hold out hope that this would be the case.
But of course, life loves to throw curve-balls as the fifth set dragged on longer and longer. Beside her, Washijo’s face was set into a deep frown. It was evident that he was deep in thought.
“I always thought that strength would prevail over everything else. That’s how it’s always been and how it always will be.” Washijo’s fists clenched. “A team of Alphas is better than a misfit team with no clear strategies or strength.”
(Name) jolted, startled at the sudden confession. She mused her thoughts carefully, the words heavy on her tongue. “Perhaps with the new generations, that will prove differently. We cannot always remain stuck in our ways otherwise we cannot progress as people, as a society.”
He clicked his tongue, crossing his arms as he stared at the court. “You’ve been a good influence on the team.”
The Omega blinked, surprised at the sudden confession. She waited for more, until it was evident that he wouldn’t say more on the matter. She swallowed, nodding. “Thank you, Coach.”
Their eyes followed the ball as the long rally surprised them. (Name) chewed on her bottom lip, anticipation in her gut. Her eyes widened as the troublesome short middle-blocker blended in with his team-mates. Something was wrong, they won’t be able to catch it. Her heart was heavy as the whistle blew, the ball bouncing out of bounds after making contact with Hayato’s arms. Her shoulders slumped as shock ricocheted through her mark. Her head swiveled, staring at the ace as he panted.
He was silent as he joined the rest of the pack, silent through the award ceremony as well though it wasn’t like he spoke much to begin with. If it wasn’t for her mark, she wouldn’t begin to know what the Apex Alpha was thinking. Pangs of shock, resignation, sorrow, and irritation through her body, yanking her emotions this way and that.
Tendou and Semi were more blatant with their feelings. Tendou practically latched onto her, laughing in that somewhat higher-pitched voice that alerted her to his internalised feelings. She let him, bringing him away to a hidden corner so that she could squeeze him in a tight hug, letting his body quake in her embrace.
Semi, on the other hand, seemed perfectly fine. After all, the male was already forcibly torn away from his starting position, and even if he went to nationals again, it wasn’t like he would play much more on the court. There was more to life than volleyball, and he already had a taste for what came next.
“Come check out this cafe,” he had told (Name), texting her a photo of a flyer. “I might be performing there.”
The Omega simply smiled, patting him on the head. “I’ll always support you, Semi. I’ll be there.”
The group walked into the gym at the end of it all, passing the batons to the newer generations. (Name) stood silently to the side. There was no Omega to replace her. Not yet at least. That’ll be a problem for Shiratorizawa’s Omegas to figure out. All she could do was hope that her replacement would benefit the pack in ways she couldn’t possibly have done so. It’s not like she was around that much to begin with - having split priorities and the drama of the love triangle she had unknowingly been drawn into. Perhaps next year, their Omega would be solely dedicated to the pack like the pack deserved.
*****
The Omega waited patiently, her maroon jacket folded over her arms as she watched them finishing up their reps. Members slowly trickled out until it was just her and one other person. Ushijima, the Alpha and former captain, was the last one of the pack, doing extra reps as he waited for all members to complete their reps.
“Wakatoshi.”
Ushijima grunted, eyes locked onto the opposite court as he prepared for another serve. “Let’s go get food.”
He blinked, muscles freezing up before olive eyes landed on her. (Name) stared at him, face unwavering.
“Food, Toshi. You need it to fuel your body, or have you forgotten in your haste to better yourself overnight?”
Ushijima stood from his semi-crouched position, tilting his head. “I do not think I will get better overnight.”
(Name) chuckled, shaking her head. “Is that all you got?” She shrugged on her jacket. “C’mon, let’s go eat. I’m hungry.”
“Okay.”
The duo made quick work of cleaning the gym, ensuring that everything was right while they left. They made their way to the dorms, bringing the Omega into the kitchen as she hummed slightly, bustling around to gather ingredients.
“Think you have enough brain-power left to teach me that hayashi rice?”
The slightest flicker of amusement and happiness filled Ushijima’s expression. “Of course.”
He stood beside her, helping her prepare the ingredients as the low rumble of his voice filled the stagnant air of the kitchen. Beside his gentle instructions, not much was exchanged between the two, even while they were eating. A silence hung in the air, stiff. It wasn’t awkward though, which Ushijima appreciated. As a man of few words, he knew that his quiet nature often made people uncomfortable.
He finished washing the dishes, eyes narrowed in on the task as (Name) cleaned the rest of their mess. Ushijima cleared his throat, drawing her (e/c) orbs to him. “I will walk you off-campus.” Ushijima swallowed, a bitter taste in his mouth. “Will Iwaizumi pick you up?”
She hummed, nodding. “He will, in a bit.” (Name) chewed on her bottom lip. “Let’s talk before I leave though. Is that alright?”
He nodded as they sat down at a stone bench near the track field. A heavy silence settled over them, suffocating as the weight of her words hit him. Even the wind became quiet, as if the world was holding its breath. Ushijima had known that this was coming, but he wasn’t prepared. Not so soon after the defeat he had faced earlier that day.
“Wakatoshi.”
Ushijima swallowed. “Yes?”
“This may be poor timing, but I think I’ve made my decision.”
Ushijima took a sharp breath of air. “I see.”
(Name) looked up into the sky, nails digging into her palms. “I think that…”
BONUS
“I’m going to go fill the water-bottles. I’ll meet you guys there!” (Name) said to Semi, who just shrugged and waved her off. He was on his phone, replying to his parents to let them know that he had arrived at the stadium. The rest of Shiratorizawa had already dispersed. Semi and (Name) had arrived late due to picking up the bentos for their lunch.
The Omega walked off with a spring in her step, humming to whatever song she was listening to.
“Where is (Name)?” Ushijima asked, looking at Semi.
Semi looked up at his phone, tilting his head. “She’s right-” he turned, pointing at the empty space where she’d just occupied. “Oh fuck.”
“How did you lose Omega-chan?” Tendou asked, raising an eyebrow.
Ushijima’s jaw clenched, swallowing his frustration. As Captain, he had interviews to attend to which is why he had entrusted (Name) to Semi. “When’d you last see her?”
Semi hesitated, thinking hard. “She was literally just here.”
They all sniffed the air, searching for her scent. Unfortunately, there were too many Alphas present for them to really discern her scent.
“At least you have the food,” Tendou commented, looking at the bags at Semi’s feet. “Where could she possibly have gone?”
“Well, she is a manager. Maybe some manager stuff?’
Ushijima turned, walking towards the fountains. He let out a sigh of relief when he spotted her amongst the other managers. “(Name).”
“Oh! Ushijima-san. Have you finished your interviews?” She asked, turning away from the other manager she was talking with to give him a smile.
“Why didn’t you tell us where you were going?”
(Name) raised an eyebrow, tilting her head. “What do you mean? I told Semi.”
“Next time, let us know in the group-chat. We don’t want to lose you.”
“Uhh, okay. Whatever you say, Ushijima-san.” She turned back to the water bottles.
“Can I help you?” Ushijima asked, stepping closer to her. He threw a look at the other managers, scaring off the Omegas and causing the Alpha managers to puff out their chest in an attempt to stand up for themselves.
“You don’t have to! I’m just about finished.” She flashed him another smile before turning back to the managers. “It was nice to meet you all! Best of luck.”
“Bye (Name)!”
Pouting slightly, Ushijima wrapped his arm around the Omega as he took a tray of bottles in his other hand.
Next time, he’d just bring her with him, he promised himself.
*****
“So, will you stay?” Oikawa asked, crossing his arms as he looked between them. The third years were at a local cafe, meeting up a few days after the tournament.
Makki snorted, rolling his eyes. “Aren’t you the one leaving us?”
“Yeah, we don’t need a head Alpha who will be in a whole different country,” Mattsun teased.
“Hey!” Oikawa protested. “This is my dream.” He swallowed, a bitter taste in his mouth. “You’re my family, and I don’t want to lose you. No matter where in the world I’ll be.”
“Who said we’re leaving you?” Iwaizumi piped up, leaning back as he raised his eyebrow at them. “You’ve been a pain in my ass ever since we met, Oikawa, and I plan on returning that for the rest of your miserable life.”
Oikawa opened his mouth to protest only to have arms wrap around his shoulders from behind. “Yeah, Oiks. You’re an integral part of this pack and you’re stuck with us, alright?” The soft strawberry met his nose as the warmth of her touch filled his body.
His lip trembled as tears spilled down his cheeks.
“Awh, we made him cry,” Makki snickered, covering his mouth slightly with his palm.
“I-I’m not crying!” Oikawa protested, aggressively wiping his tears away only to have (Name) tighten her grip on him.
“You big baby,” she teased, grabbing a stack of napkins from the table and dropping it in front of him. She peeled herself off of him before plopping down at the seat beside Iwaizumi. “So, does that mean Haji is the new head Alpha?” She blinked innocently at them before they all exploded into an argument. The Omega only giggled, leaning into her mate as she watched in satisfaction at the chaos she had caused.
*****
“So what now?” Semi asked, sipping from his tea as they sat in the cafeteria together. “Are we just gonna say farewell and go our separate ways after graduation.”
Ushijima paused, looking up from his food. “I do not wish to lose our friendship.”
“Awh, are we your friends, Wakatoshi-kun? Are you going soft on us now?” Tendou joked, nudging the male in the stomach. “You know you’re my best friend already!”
Ushijima blinked stoically. “I would like to remain in a pack with you all, if that is alright.”
They stared at each other before looking back at Ushijima. “Aren’t you going into volleyball professionally, Wakatoshi?”
“Yes and?”
“That means we’re going our separate ways anyways,” Hayato pointed out, brows furrowed.
“Distance does not mean that we cannot remain pack-mates though.” Ushijima frowned. “Is that not something you all want?”
“No, no, that’s not it.” Tendou protested, waving his hand. “It’s just that, we’ll be separated by our own journeys. Are you sure this is the pack you want to stay in? I’m sure you’ll have pack offers in whatever team you end up joining.”
He blinked. “You are my family. I do not want anyone else.”
“You’re going to make me cry, Wakatoshi-kun.”
“Don’t!” Hayato protested, frowning. “If you cry, I might end up crying too.”
“So are you all going to bawl like babies or can I ask the Captain something?” Shirabu folded his arms, appearing behind Semi’s shoulder.
“Shut up Shirabu.”
*****
FUN FACTS
💟 Coach Saito always supported (Name) whenever it came to Seijoh. He knew how difficult it had been to be an Omega with Shiratorizawa - especially with how Washijo typically mistreated Omegas in general
💟 Ushijima watched from the stands as (Name) embraced Iwaizumi after his loss to Karasuno before slipping away and being stopped by the news station for an interview
💟 To this day, (Name) has deep respect for the Karasuno pack members - especially considering how well they performed at the tournament
💟 That day was the first time that a majority of Seijoh had seen Iwaizumi cry. Only the third years had seen that sight before that moment
💟 After the tournament had completely concluded, Kyotani reached out to (Name) and Iwaizumi and ended up crashing at their apartment for a night in order to talk out his aggressive tendencies to resolve them for next year
💟 If it wasn’t for (Name), Iwaizumi could have potentially sunk into an Alpha depression - which is extremely rare
💟 Semi was confident in the ability of his pack-mates, even if they didn’t necessarily believe in him as a setter anymore
💟 A week after the tournament, (Name) hung-out with Tendou and kept him company as he made chocolates. This gave him the perfect opportunity to talk about his future and how he felt at the conclusion of the tournament
💟 Washijo did feel slightly guilty about the whole situation with the Omega, and vowed to himself at that game to do better in the future
💟 Teaching (Name) how to make hayashi rice gave Ushijima a lot of hope, and made his mood a lot better. He hadn’t realised it himself, but food was his ideal method for comfort
💟 They had lost (Name) at the beginning of the Interhigh tournament months ago
💟 The group decided that both Iwaizumi and Oikawa would be the head Alphas of the pack, though they typically still ran it as a democracy
💟 The other third-years ended up crying when they were finally alone. They each had their own misgivings about the state of their pack and relationships with one another once they graduated, but Ushijima had eased their worries without even really trying
AN: So... we’re almost at the end. Who are we feeling? Iwa? Ushi? Are y’all ready for next week’s chapter?

–The Life Cycle of a Butterfly
Characters: Daichi Sawamura / f!Reader
Genre & Word Count: fluff & 2.9k
requested by anon:
Would you do a fluff Imagine for Daichi Sawamura where proposes to his HS sweetheart infront of Ukai’s shop because it’s the place of a lot of their relationship firsts like he realized he had a crush on her when they were first years running to each other after their clubs (she played soccer), where she told him she loved him after they lost to Aoba Johsai third year, got yelled at for kissing in front of when they found out they were going to the same university, etc? Your Bo fic got me ❤️
A/N: song rec for the fic is a Nocturne of Chopin’s. also pls keep it in mind i did the ending at 2am so there may be few sentences w/o verbs that slipped my attention.
Sakanoshita Store is a familiar place for many. A meeting point for teens, a store full of wonders for kids and a vantage point for Karasuno High, especially for the sports teams.
It is the place where you first hung out with your new teammates, some of whom you’d become life-long friends in the future. It’s where you found your second family and felt at ease, discussed tactics and laughed about funny memories.
For you, Sakanoshita Store was where you first laid your eyes on the infamous team, though unaware of it at the time, they managed to attract your attention. An usual after-practice snack, you and your friends had crowded the place. Upon entering and seeing there were no absent tables, they had bought whatever they came for and left. And in their absence, there was an air of unease. “Hey, who were they?” you asked one of your friends but the curious expression on her face made it obvious she hadn’t noticed them.
The next day in class, a stroke of silver hair you recognized from the store. “Hello Sugawara-san.”
“Oh, hi (Name)-san. Did you need something?”
“Yes, actually... I was wondering, which club you were in?”
“The boys’ volleyball club!” “Since when Karasuno has one?” The face he makes sends regret through your bones. With a soft giggle, hand scratching his head, he offers a sad smile; similar to the air they brought with them the other night.
“Well the club surely didn’t meet the expectations we had but Daichi-san has hopes for the future.”
The way he says the words gives you hope too, for their club and future success. “Who is, Daichi-san?”
“Square chin, broad shoulders, very nice back? Never captured your attention?” “I will… make sure to look for him next time. Thank you, Sugawara-san.”
“Please, you can call me Suga.”
Suga was right that day, because once Daichi Sawamura captures your attention, it’s downhill from there on.
Exchanged greetings were awkward at first but in a short time, you two would take the time to greet one another and ask how you are. With it began small talk, usually outside Sakanoshita Store, snacks in hand, standing like that for god knows how long.
“So what sports are you doing?” “Soccer!” His face a mixture of surprise and amusement, a moment you hoped would be engraved in your memory forever. Playing the sly, you invited him to one of your practices and he invited you to one of his. Working out and exchanging tactics and suggestions on health were a given after that.
When Suga invited you to the first of many study groups to come, you were none the wiser. “Hey (Name)! I’m holding a study group tomorrow for the upcoming exams. Would you like to join?”
And for your luck, it’d always be the seat next to Daichi or across him that was empty. They either liked to meet up earlier; Suga, Daichi, Asahi-san and Kiyoko-san, or Suga would tell you the time few minutes late for you to show up last.
No complaints though, as fierce as he is on court, Daichi was expectedly good with classes too. He would take the time to explain things patiently if anyone ever needed help, seeing that side of him would make you feel you were included in on a special event. One too delightful to watch and fluttering you in the process.
Firsts is something you experienced quite a lot in High school.
First low grade, first time you had to stay up all night to study, first time you had a bad game and first time you had someone in the audience that you cared for deeply. The first goal you scored was in the very same match, the finishing blow to the game and your winning point. It was the first time Daichi hugged you with an iron grip.
The first time you had snacks at a time so late was when you joined the team. Practices going longer than planned and starvation coming over the lot of you, Ukai’s store is where you all would [go].
The first time Daichi realized his feelings towards you may be bigger than anyone could foresee, it was another late night after practice hangout. As the chill air brushed your cheeks and left clouds of steam in its presence, you were having an energy drink, thanking him for it. One sip and your face was taken over by a new emotion, the surprise of tasting your favorite fruit in the drink, you asked how he knew and he just shrugged with the same small smile of his; a hint of knowing was hidden there but “Dumb luck.” was all he said.
As he started taking notes of what you like and what ticks you’ve got, the small details spilled during study sessions; you found yourself doing the same for him. Study group leading to study dates after an unexpected proposal one evening; a joke with a hint of serious in it.
“Hey have you been to this café downtown? The one that opened recently? I’ve heard they make discounts for couples, we could pretend to be one if you’d like.”
Pretending was easier than asking, little plays for gentler dreams, to avoid the possibility of stern truths and harsh rejections. Something close to disappointment passed through his face but he shook it off quickly, offering a big smile and a nod, “It’s a date, then!”. Oh how the both of you hoped for the words to come true hereafter.
Juggling on the thin line of what-nots, teasing remarks from your friends could not be escaped. And with people who don’t know you two, assuming you were more than just friends, it’d make things more sufferable occasionally. The close calls and the brushing of hands, his breath tingling your cheeks and your eyes watching him with an ever-lasting spark whenever he wasn’t looking around…
Safe to say you were always there for one another, could talk about anything and everything, a shoulder to cry on and a chest to bury your tears deep, a rooted support system at the matches and great consolation for any kind of losses.
Although fights and arguments rare and in-between, one came by after the biggest game of that time, ending with the victory of Aoba Johsai’s epic win. The morale was down, the third years now more lost than ever, for they were so close, fingertips almost grazing at what they’ve been chasing after for the last three years. As everyone started to leave one by one, back to their homes, it was only Daichi and you left behind, back at where it all began.
Frustration clear from his face and the air around him, you reached out a hand, only to stop midair, not touching him, grazing his shoulder or offering a soft pat. It was clear that wasn’t what he needed. Putting on a face of the strong leader for so long, doing the best he could to keep the team up and hopeful; it took everything in him to hold himself together. You wanted nothing more than to help him stay together, stronger than before, than ever.
Consoling words falling short at one point, it was clear he didn’t want to hear.
“Why do you even care so much about this? It’s not like our team faces a great defeat at the beginning, you are not the flightless crows, the depleted ones fallen out of their strenght-“ “Because I care about you, you idiot!” You didn’t mean to yell but maybe it was better to put it out like that.
For the first time in the past hour, his face softened to something new, curious and tender. The “why?” hanging from his lips could be heard from the silencing weight on the street.
“Because I care for you. I love you, can’t you see, how much it hurts me? Do you think I can’t feel your pain and anger right now? Your disappointment and doubts eating at your guts?” Hands acting on their own as words came out of your mouth, you held him in a gentle grip as you kept going.
Aware of the tears gathered at the edge of his eyes, you were numb to yours until he wiped away yours with one step, one touch.
A second step and he was hugging you tight, pressing to himself as much as he can. As if the world around you was reaching its end and he wanted to shield the both of you no matter the consequence. Words mumbled into your hair, you didn’t need to hear to understand what he was trying to say.
Seeing you hand in hand, it was Suga first to cheer on you. A little “Took you long enough!” coming from him didn’t go unnoticed and you could only laugh in response. He did have a point after all. Knowing that, he wouldn’t miss any chance he could get to brag about how it was him to get you two together.
“So our loss to Seijoh was a plan of yours as well?” Daichi said one day and Suga toned down the bragging about being the best wingman.
Joining the club on their practice matches whenever you can was more than just an excuse to see your boyfriend. Getting to see the improvement of your underclassmen made you feel like a mother who first witnessed their baby walking and running. Still doing your best to encourage them whenever you can, you were there with them ‘til the very end.
As school drew near, the immersing? Fear of separation hovered over. It was without a doubt you all would keep in touch but there was something saddening about having to leave high school behind and begin a new chapter of your lives. No more cozy lunch breaks with your friends, you could never get to enjoy the sudden taste of spotting Daichi across the hall during your breaks, waving at each or blowing kisses at one another. No more after school practices together, farewell joint work out sessions and early practices.
With the ever pressing matter of this, all you could was to live in the moment, enjoy it fully and through, take as many mental pictures as you can, laugh your heart out until tears come out and Suga’s face hurt from smiling so much, until Kiyoko cracks down a smile and joins in on your schemes, Asahi watching the rest of you with worry…
And Daichi by your side, almost all the time. Suga would say you two were attached by the hip. On the walks home, you’d offer him your arm and he would pull you to himself instead, an arm wrapped around your waist, your head on his shoulder, inhaling each other’s scent and watching the sun set.
When the awaited time came at last, first thing you did was to run to him, yelling where you would be going for studying. Joining on your joy and little celebration dance, he pulled you to himself and wore the same proud smile he always had whenever his thoughts lay on you.
“Let’s have a treat like always to celebrate!”
“You mean- Ukai’s store?”
“Why not? We should have as many Karasuno snack memories as we can there.” Seeing the unease on your face, Daichi placed a kiss on your head and leaned in for a hug.
“Come on. My treat.” With a quick nod on your part, he grabbed his jacket and the two of you were on your way out. Your feet practically skipping, you couldn’t contain your enthusiasm and started rambling off about anything you could spot on the way, hands never stopping once.
“Hey! Wait a second. You never told me where you got in!”
“So… hungry… cannot- talk…” He said in a rather mimicking voice, low, his unoccupied hand reaching out to a nonexistent table of feasts, clearly impersonating the many times you’ve done the same thing to him.
“Okay, so be it. I can wait!” At your words, he shot a grin your way and pulled you further to himself.
By the time you reached Ukai’s store, purchased anything you craved and got out- another request of Daichi’s, “For old times’ sake.” he simply said. As you were busy unwrapping, his eyes lingered on the store and the trees around, each stone and person passing by.
He speaks so quietly, you don’t register his words at first: “It’ll feel weird coming back here as college students. I’ll miss seeing through the eyes of a crow.”
Your hands coming to a halt, you look at him, at his eyes and the corner of his mouth, and he doesn’t keep your expecting eyes waiting. “But it’ll be a new beginning for us. Visiting again as the students of (University Name) this time.”
Turning back to face you, with the same smug grin of his, it catches you off guard, even if only for a second. Food be damned, you throw yourself at his arms, the very same ones you found consolation and comfort many times before, and before either of you can realize, you lock your lips, Daichi holding you in his arms, spinning you around.
It feels so normal and natural yet magical, another first in the chamber of joy and the course of living, in the cycle of life and everything. As everything else around you seems to tone down, colors faded back into the background as well as the sounds, you are startled by the shout, a little too familiar. Offering Coach Ukai a sheepish grin, you pull Daichi by his hand and run off to where your feet guide you; the laughter coming from the both of you ringing in the air, bubbling up in your chest and making you feel.
The cycle rounds up again and you take on the new step, from now on comes new beginnings, each one a new adventure test, new taste to try, to drink, run and yell, scream and dance.
It always leads back to certain places engraved in your lives. The same café you first went for an impromptu date, the same park you had a picnic, the familiar front of Sakanoshita Store, the same benches you’ve sat together many times before and fell asleep many more…
Be it a celebration after the tiring week of finals, or a study date gone rogue, a party to celebrate one’s birthday or just a quick run-down the store due to an emergency craving; it always rounds back to the same places, although new settings come once in a while to be joined.
Seasons pass, people come and go, things change and flowers bloom.
The waters wash down the worries just as hit against the rocky cliffs, sharpening some and softening the others, the breeze gently grazing your cheeks and the sun leaving little kisses.
Another day of walking together, nothing particular in mind to do and you find yourselves in front of the Sakanoshita Store like many times before.
“Do you want anything?” you ask Daichi and he just shakes his head. Whispering “I’ll be out in a minute.” you go in.
By the time you are out, Daichi’s attention seems elsewhere, gazed focused on far away, on something that’s not even here. Breaking out of the trance upon hearing your steps, he turns to face you, an expression you haven’t seen in a while, at least not directed at you.
“(Name)-“ he begins, “The past years I’ve gotten to know you, live with you and by your side, they have been the greatest years of my life.” Your breath comes to a pause, unsure of what will follow his words.
“And ever since I’ve met you, you have become a butterfly in my heart. In my stomach, exciting me with your presence; in my mind, entrapping? My thoughts and ideas; flowing in my blood like the oxygen and filling my heart with emotions I could never imagine be true.”
Holding your hand with his, in a manner he has done before, his gaze follows your fingers and trails up back to you. “And just like a butterfly, my life has entered a cycle. A mere caterpillar meeting you, chrysalis never seemed so easy with you, and with that I’ve emerged as someone bright new. Over and over again. Each moment we’ve shared, a new cycle; each day coming to an end, the cycle would carry us back here; each tender memory now engraved in my heart is a gift from you and my days I’ve spent with you.”
Another deep breath and he adds lastly. “So thank you. For giving me this opportunity and letting me live through so many lives, more chances than a butterfly could ever have.”
As your heart stammers in your chest, torn apart on how to feel and what to say, you just stare. “I… I don’t understand-“
“My butterfly-“ Daichi says as he squeezes your hand, “Would you be so kind and allow me to experience more cycles by your side, take me into your heart and life, share a leaf for now and ever?”
When put out like that, it seems clear as day, as the sky above you in that very moment. And all you can say is to let out a “Yes!” and throw yourself into his arms, like you’ve always done.

The king of your heart
Kageyama x fem reader x Kunimi
Bold=Flashbacks
The sun shining throughout Miyagi, driving down road is the mini bus with the Karasuno High boy’s volleyball team. They are heading Aoba Josai High school dor a practice match. Everyone on the bus had different emotions Tsukishima didn’t care, Tanaka was pumped up as always, and Hinata was sick in his stomach ready to vomit any second now. Kageyama just staring out the window worrying about his old teammates. He knows his old classmate and him didn’t end on the greatest note.
“Why aren’t you taking this serious?!?!” a loud voice from an angry Kageyama was heard throughout the gym. The first years were shaking in fear of there senpai while while the third years were starting to get aggravated by his constant criticism about the way they play. Kunimi looking at the time he knows that Kageyama has to be somewhere. “Um...Kageyama it’s getting a bit late-” “We just started practice and hour ago, what’s important?” Kunimi shaking saying never mind and went to his phone to send a quick message to someone.
Kageyama was then brought back to reality when he heard Tanaka shouting. Everyone on the bus turned around the see vomit on Tanaka’s pants. After everyone calmed down the bus pulled up to Aoba Johsai, everyone getting out of the bus Tanaka led Tsukishima, Yamaguchi and Kageyama around the school when they heard someone speak negatively about Karasuno. Tanako poked his head around the corner with a scary face, to be faced with Yahaba and Kindaichi. The rest of the group walked around the corner giving off a terrifying aura scaring Kindaichi and Yahaba, right when Tanaka was about to snap at them a female voice was heard. “Yuu-kun?” “Yahaba-Senpai??” The groups of boys all turned to see a girl with big e/c eyes with long beautiful h/c hair in the Aoba Josai’s girl school uniform. Kageyama’s eyes widen at the familiar silhouette approaching.
“Tobio-San” a girl with short h/c hair and with big e/c eyes, said with a dark blush covering her cheeks. With a gentle smile Kageyama gently hugged her. “Y/n-chan, how was your day/” Her snuggling into him with a warm feeling spreading throughout her body. “My day was great.” Her deciding it’s the perfect time to tell Kageyama something important, how she actually feels. Y/n had a crush on Kageyama since there first year of Junior high, they are now starting their 3 year at Kitagawa. “Tobio can I tell you something?” “Sure, what is it??” Taking a deep breathe Y/n spoke “Kageyama Tobio, I have feelings for you and I was wondering you would like to go on a date with me?” With a small smile Kageyama nodded his head and agrees. That was the start of the relation ship between the two teens.
“W-what’s going on here?” Y/n tried to sound serious but the height difference between her and the guys it quit intimidating. Stepping in front of her friends she stares at Tanaka with an angry expression. Daichi came to grab the boys before they cause any trouble. Kindaichi decided to speak “So, your Majesty finally whipped his new royal subjects into shape?” Kageyama looks at Y/n but she is scrolling through her phone. Kageyama then with a blank just responded with an uh uh. Y/n walked past the group to head to the gym and find a spot at the bleachers. The rest of the boys arrived and they started warming up, kageyama looks at the stands and he see’s y/n,Kageyama remembers how she always loved watching the boys volleyball team play.
The boys in Kitagawa were cheering for there win against Yukigoaka, a young y/n went over to congratulate them and too also check on her best friend. She was worried for Kunimi because she thought he injured himself when he digged for the volleyball. She found Kunimi, so she went over and wrapped her arms around him in a gentle hug. “Nice job out there, you did amazing...” “Thank you n/n. I’m glad you could make it.” She released the hug and gave him a big smile. “I never miss one of your games Akira, which reminds me are you ok?? You aren’t hurt?” Chuckling softly he booped her nose, “I’m fine y/n, don’t worry about me.” The two walking back Y/n saw Kageyama, he turn to look at the the two. Y/n lifting her hand to wave and prepare to walk over to him. Kageyama just brushed past her saying he is going to do some extra practicing, “Y/n...if you want? We can have a sleepover.” Smiling at the idea she grabs Kunimi’s hand and they leave the arena.
Y/n was reading a book under the cherry tree near the boy’s volleyball gym, waiting for Kageyama to leave practice early so he can go on a date with her. Y/n hoping he won’t forget another date this time, Kageyama missed multiple dates and it seems to Y/n that he is growing distant. Expressing how she feels Kageyama promised to take her on a date. Checking the time again, tears started to fall from y/n’s eyes. ‘He’s late again...’ Filled with so much emotion Y/n fell asleep under the tree. Practice has just ended and Kunimi was the first to leave the gym when he saw y/n asleep under the tree. Shocked he sped walked over to her, gathering her school bag Kunimi picked up y/n bridal style to take her home safely. Kageyama walks out of the gym to see his girlfriend in his teammates arms, and he saw red. “Why are you holding my girlfriend?” “Tsk, I’m taking her home. It’s getting late and I didn’t want her to be here alone.” “Why was she-” “Out here? Maybe because you promised to go on a date with her? She was crying, do you realize you were the reason she was crying? How you’re not giving her the right love and affection she deserves?? NO!! You only care about yourself and not about her.” Kunimi walks away holding y/n more closer to him leaving a shocked Kageyama there staring at nothing.
The match between the two schools have begun and Aoba Josai was in the lead because of the mess ups Hinata caused because of his nerves. Kageyama getting angry grabbed him by the shirt and yelled. “Come on!! Stop being a nervous wreck or I’ll kill you.” Kindaichi and Kunimi on the other side weren’t surprised about his outburst. “Well won’t you look at that, huh” Kunimi scoffs “He hasn’t changed a bit.” Y/n just rolled her eyes and looked and Kunimi who was looking at her, smiling she gave him wink which caused the boy to trying to hide his blush. It was Hinata’s turn to serve, the whistle blow and it startled Hinata who accidentally spiked the volleyball at Kageyama’s head. Tanaka and Tsukishima suddenly burst into laughter but what caught his attention was a familiar laugh. Looking from the corner of his eye he see’s y/n laughing, he doesn’t really remember when was the last time she laughed when they were together.
Today is Y/n’s birthday and Kageyama promised to spend the day with her. Finishing the last touch ups to her appearance, y/n was ready for this special day with her boyfriend. Waiting in the living room 20 minutes have past, then another 30 minutes past until Kageyama was officially 2 hours late. Not answering any of her texts, Y/n grabbed her bag and her keys and left the house. She walked across the street and knocked on the door, with a hopeful look when Kunimi opened the door. “Let me guess, he didn’t show up.” Looking at her eyes seeing tears threatening to fall, Kunimi grabbed her by the waist and hugged her. “If you want? We can spend the day together doing whatever you want.” “I would love that Akira.” Kunimi gets ready to head out and once he was ready they left the house to spend the rest of the day together. Y/n didn’t even think of Kageyama once.
“Tobio we need to talk.” “I can’t right now. I’m late for practice.” Y/n had enough, this isn’t the Kageyama she fell in love with. “Tobio Kageyama. Your practice starts in an hour, we need to talk this is important.” “What is it” Shaking because of her mixed emotions of anger and upset, she couldn’t take it anymore. “Kageyama maybe we should-” “Break up” Y/n looks up at him, “Huh?” “Tsk ok then Bye” Kageyama turns around to leave the girl in the hallway. Kageyama just arrived in the gym when all of the sudden he was pushed to the ground. Looking up to see an Angry Kunimi grabbing him by the shirt. “DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU’VE DID” “LET ME GO!!” Kunimi punching Kageyama in the face twice, “You don’t fucking deserve her love” Kunimi pushing Kageyama to the ground left him alone to go look for Y/n.
During the 2nd set Oikawa arrived, wanting the team to win coach decided to switch Oikawa and Kunimi. Kunimi went up to where you were at, to watch the remainder of the game with you. When Oikawa spiked a ball straight to Tsukishima the ball flew in the direction the two were at. Before the ball hit the railing Kunimi quickly grabbed Y/n by the waist and moved her closer to him. The boys from Aoba Josai cheering Kunimi for his actions like “Nice save lover boy!!’ “Look at Romeo!!” “ Get yo girl Kunimi!!” Those comments didn’t go unnoticed by Kageyama, which got him wondering ‘Is Kunimi and Y/n dating?’
After the break up Y/n and Kunimi refused to leave each others side, Kunimi took y/n on ‘dates’ and y/n got to see a romantic side of Kunimi. Two months after the break up Kunimi tried to show y/n that he can show more love that she deserves then Kageyama can ever do. So he decided it was time to ask her out. Meeting her after school under the cherry tree. “Akira is there something you wanted to tell me?” “Y/n L/n, I've been keeping this a secret.” Looking into her eye Kunimi pulled her into a hug, “I’m in love with you and I know this might ruin our friendship but I-” Kunimi was interrupted when Y/n pulled him into a kiss, pulling away with a beet red face Y/n looked at him with so much love. “I return your feelings Akira” “So your my girlfriend...” Nodding her head yes responded with “Yes, and your my boyfriend.” The two just staying there holding on to each other happy they have one another.
The practice match came to an end with Karasuno winning. Kageyama was walking around the halls when he ran into y/n. Y/n saw him so she stopped to congratulate him. “Nice job out there King.” “Um...Thank you.” Kageyama wanted to confirm that one question, “L/n. Are you and Kunimi-’’ “Together? Yeah we are.” Kageyama tensed when she said it, “For how long??” “A few months now, i’m sorry but I got to look for Akira.” Y/n walking away from sight Kageyama walked to join the rest of the Karasuno team. The team kept walking towards the gates after Oikawa confronted them when they heard that familiar laugh. All of them turning to see Y/n and Kunimi walk past them without a care in the world. It was obvious how the love between the two is strong. Sugawara sighs fondly and says “Aw, young love.” Kageyama looks at the two of them feeling his world falling apart, seeing how Kunimi leans into to give you a gentle kiss. That made Kageyama realize one of the most painful things in his world.
‘I lost her..’
‘I’m no longer in her heart. Those two love each other, she is his queen.’
‘While...he is her king. The king to her heart.’

Because I can't keep only making Haikyuu videos, I'll just do this here
(Part 1) I'm gonna go ahead and rate every match in the series
Rules:
1) We need to see a significant portion of the game, so simply glimpses of practice or official matches or just really short games don't count (so let's say more than 2 chapters long in the manga (with one exception as it's kind of a crucial one), I know this will miss out a few great moments, and basically the entirety of the training camp, but this list would be like 1000 pages long otherwise)
2) I'll go in chronological order as opposed to preference order because I'm too lazy for that
3) This first post is gonna be all the matches already in the anime, and I'll make a second about the manga (I'll post a link to each other on both) so this is spoiler free. Here's part 2 with the manga matches-
Alright
Yukigaoka Junior High Vs Kitagawa Daiichi
Okay, obviously this was more like a prologue than anything else. It holds a place in my heart for introducing us to these characters, and later on for not dropping Kouji and Izumi, and I liked the little details like how being in the football club meant he was able to make a good save or 2 with his foot. But of course this was hardly a match necessarily. Still fun and I enjoyed a lot of it, though.
6/10
Karasuno 3 Vs 3
Oh, Tsukki, to think you aren't as big of a douchebag as you seemed here.
I really do appreciate the entire situation, though. Tsukishima never disliked volleyball, it wasn't like he suddenly started getting serious after never doing so before when the Shiratorizawa match came, he was always one who could be riled up but he just didn't want to show it because it was irritating to him that people were so intense.
The match itself was really nice for what it was. The early matches really contained a lot of foreshadowing, like Yamaguchi messing up the serve we saw him do. And of course this was the start of the partnership between Kageyama and Hinata. Still warming up to proper matches, of course.
6/10
Karasuno Vs Aoba Johsai practice match
Okay, this is undoubtedly the funniest match of the show. Not necessarily the funnest (I won't forget Jozenji) but it was kind of hilarious. Poor Hinata freaking out, I love him, but it was so endearing. And of course there's the serve mistake he made. Baby crow grew up afterwards.
But then Oikawa's introduction was badass as hell. I love the entire Seijoh team, they're great, and I love every opposing team, but Oikawa is still the best rival in the series in my opinion. And people like Tanaka got some spotlight too which was nice.
7/10
Karasuno High Vs Neighborhood Association
Listen. I may be biased because I love the Neighborhood Association, but I absolutely loved this match. It was hype even though it was low stakes. We got Noya and Asahi playing for the first time, and Suga as well in fact. The introduction of the jump float serve. Some fantastic saves and spikes. I love it. And it was emotionally fulfilling.
7/10
Karasuno Vs Nekoma practice match
NEKOMA! Sorry, sorry. Just love them.
Anyway, I'm only talking about the match so I can't count how much I adored Kenma's introduction and the two of them meeting (Hinata, you're my cinnamon roll), nor can I count the ridiculous interactions before and after (Yamamoto and Tanaka, Kuroo and Daichi, and Yaku and Suga, are just too perfect) but other than that, I REALLY liked how Nekoma was the first team to show us how any spike can be countered. I loved Hinata and Inuoka's rivalry, and I so appreciated how they showed Kenma being a strategist. Also, in the manga, there's like 20 panels of him like this
Which is a) a freaking mood, and b) one stupidly endearing quality about him.
Maybe this match is just about how much I love every character?
But it was so fun. Oikawa is the best individual rival, but Nekoma is their best rival as a whole. It's just so great.
7.5/10
Karasuno Vs Tokonami
I loved how we got backstory for Daichi. I don't know why, but I didn't exactly expect it? Like I expected development, but I guess I'm used to the focus being purely the main characters in terms of backstory, at least this early on, in most series. But I really like Ikejiri and I find his dynamic with Daichi endearing.
Not the best "match" but I appreciated the sentiment
6/10
Karasuno Vs Dateko
Oh, now we're talking. Gonna be honest, Dateko is one of my least favourite teams (I still love them! I love every single team. They're just on the lower end of a really highly appreciative scale) but this match was fantastic.
Again, I may be judging this based on one aspect, but I mean to this day Noya's save is one of my favourite scenes in anything. It was so well done, both anime and manga, and I just fell even more in love with Noya. And the symbolism of smashing through the iron wall was so great.
8/10
Karasuno Vs Aoba Johsai (1st official match)
And we come to the only team which Karasuno faced more than once in an official game (that we see) and that means I can't help but judge it harsher because their second game was awesome
HOWEVER! I still 100% love this game. It's such an important game to everyone and though I won't count the after effect, in the restaurant and all, I will count the immediate aftermath. It was so sad but also understandable and the entire match itself was intense. I could go into it, but it just paid off. The build up and the animosity between some of the players, the background we got for the characters during this game, the freaking soundtrack which is incredible in any of the matches.
Fantastic.
8.5/10
Karasuno Vs Oghiminami
...Meh
4/10
Karasuno Vs Kakugawa
...Meh again
With a side of interest in the idea of facing a 2m tall player, but...yeah, meh (neither game was bad, I just hardly cared about the actual matches. I enjoyed the surrounding discussions and all way more)
5/10
Karasuno Vs Jozenji
Most certainly NOT meh!
I love Jozenji so much. I want to see them more! They're so, so fun, and this shows you don't have to stick within a specific type of play. Be able to have fun while also being serious, it's important!
And, like, they're good! They're not bad or anything, even though they're messing around. They're entertaining as hell but also try hard.
I love them
And we got to see Suga playing too. I love him so I need to point this out.
8/10
Karasuno Vs Wakutani
Firstly, rip Daichi.
Alright, but seriously, I'm so glad we got to see someone like Takeru. His playing style is completely different to Hinata's at this point, yet they admire the same player, but neither of them are actually cruel or rude to the other team. This was such a respectful match while also being intense.
And we got to see an injury of a key player who couldn't go back on the court unlike Kags in the previous game, which, while unfortunate, is actually really, really good to see. It happens and can throw a spanner in the works, but it allowed us to also see 1) Ennoshita stepping up, 2) Tanaka's reaction to accidentally injuring Daichi (though it wasn't really his fault), and 3) an entirely different type of dynamic on the court.
Also, Yamaguchi! My baby! I felt like crying for the poor thing, but this was the start of his confidence and I love him so much.
I really, really, really liked this match.
8.5/10
Karasuno Vs Aoba Johsai (2nd official match)
YES!
Okay, firstly, the strategies in this game. Using a double edged sword like Mad Dog from Aoba Johsai, and Karasuno going with a more tactic savvy thinker when in a bind, like Suga, even though Kageyama is over all a better player, it was SO great to see. Suga may not be a genius or a prodigy, but his intelligence doesn't just lie in volleyball, so he can use general knowledge to his advantage so well, and teach Kageyama something too.
Kyoutani is such an interesting character and forms a brilliant dynamic for the team to play with, it's great.
Oikawa being shown to make genuine errors is such a fantastic thing. No matter how good you are, Oikawa, Kageyama, Ushijima, whoever, you will never be 100% perfect, and you will always have moments where you make mistakes. I really enjoyed seeing that. Especially his serves, which we were introduced to before his setting.
And, of course, the Hero of the match...
I WILL PROTECT YOU! BUT RIGHT NOW YOU DON'T NEED PROTECTING, YOU ARE SMASHING IT, YES BABY!
Sorry. Got over whelmed. But real talk, I also liked that they did eventually lose that set. Miraculous plays don't automatically win the game, but it also doesn't diminish their importance.
9/10
And finally for this list
Karasuno Vs Shiratorizawa
Well, do I really need to say it?
Yes, Tsukishima owned this match, this season of the show, but he wasn't the only great player
Nishinoya had some amazing moments, Hinata is such an idiot but he utilised that to his advantage by...not thinking. Like, he deliberately received the ball with his face. I mean, come on.
Yamaguchi played great too, Suga was such a key part even when on the bench (yelling at them from the side lines is absolutely brilliant), pretty much everyone was amazing here.
But while it was longer, I still preferred the Aoba Johsai game. Only slightly. Still-
9/10
Okay! So that was the anime, now...
I committed to do the manga too, didn't I?
Alright, it does contain my 2 favourite matches, so you know what? Yeah, let's go

Soulmate AU: Oikawa x Reader [Rewind Part 2]
So this is part two of @mou-ikaihaikyuu's request! I hope you like this one too!
Oikawa's POV
"Hey, are you okay?" She asks, and I don't reply, instead I wave my hand, signalling that she shouldn't mind. I check my phone and see the date: July 16, 2018. The date is familiar.
"O-Oi." Was all she could mutter when I started to bang my head against the window lightly. Yes, it was that painful. "Stop that," she tells me. I grunt in response.
What the hell is happening? I don't feel light-headed at all, so this isn't the Rewind.
When I don't stop, I see her reach over and put her hand between the window and my head to make it stop. When her hand comes in contact with me, the pain lessens. I stop moving and simply close my eyes, leaning into her touch. We stay like that for a couple of minutes until it becomes a bearable throbbing sensation. "Feel better?" She asked. I hum in response. She pulls away and hesitantly sips her drink.
"What the hell was that?" She questions. I shake my head.
"Maybe it's something we all have to go through." I absentmindedly mutter.
Reader's POV
"Wait, what did you just say?" You ask, your heart pounding against my chest. Those were the exact same words that you heard before you rewinded last week.
Could it be?
Is he..?
"What?" He opens one eye, resting his chin on one fist. "I just said that migraines are something we all go through." You shake your head. "No, what were your exact words?" You had to make sure.
"It's something we all have to go through." He mumbles. His eyes widen in realization. "Where did you hear those words before?" He asked, gripping the sides of the table.
You hesitate. "That's... Not something I can tell you. I barely know you." You're too scared to rewind once more so soon. His eyes roam around the room, thinking.
"Then... Let's go for more dates. You just said you barely know me, right? So let's use this opportunity to get to know each other. Well enough so we'll know what's really happening. It's for our own good, isn't it?" He suggests, a small smile creeping up his mouth.
You don't really like the idea of going out on more dates on someone you barely know, but he's right. You'll both benefit from this.
"All right. We have a deal." He extends his hand towards you for you to shake, and you timidly take it. He shakes for the both of you and gives you a genuine smile. Once you pull away, he turns to check his phone for the time. "It's almost 6:00. I have to go pick up my nephew from practice." You nod, standing up.
"I'll see you next Monday, L/N-chan!" He grabs his things and rushes out.
He looks way better when he smiles genuinely.
***
Two more dates have passed, and you still don't find it in your heart to tell him. The risk is too high and you still need at least one concrete proof to encourage you to tell him. Proof of him being the person who shares the same fate as yours. Although the chance of him being your soulmate is slim, you've made it your mission to find out.
The headaches still come, and even you experience it. It comes randomly, but it's mostly in his presence. But if he so much as touches your head, the pain goes away. Maybe the headaches are one of the reasons why you're so invested in finding out. It couldn't be a coincidence that your heads hurt whenever you're in each other's presence.
As time goes by, you notice a difference.
Hallway meetings with him gradually became moments that you cherished. Crossing the road became easier every time. You saw his genuine smile more often.
You could say that you've formed quite the bond with him. You both got to know a lot of details about each other. How addicted he is to volleyball, how he got his injury, and this 'Iwa-chan' he frequently talks about but never makes the effort to introduce him to you.
You've never seen him play yet. He doesn't really give out details about his matches, but you didn't really force him to talk about it either. You just let him. It's the same case for you. He never insists that you talk about something you don't want to talk about. He's just there, listening.
The third date was most interesting. You had asked him why he had a narcissistic, teasing, or 'trashy' personality as a joke. You didn't expect him to take it to heart. He kept asking you if that was what you really thought about him, in all honesty. You simply replied that it was your first impression of him. You told him that if someone truly got to know him, they'd see beneath all of those.
You didn't know that it was some sort of wall that he had put up for other people. A wall that he lets down for chosen people. And without question, he considers you as one of them.
"Oikawa—"
"Tooru." He replied. "Call me Tooru." The both of you were walking towards the same old coffee shop. You were pretty sure that you've made the owner richer these past few months. That's right. You've been dating him for almost six months now.
Girls have started to take notice of you spending time with Oikawa, even if Oikawa does his best to not let them see the both of you on dates, wearing hoodies. Laughing at his needless worry, you reassured him that you wouldn't mind what other people say.
Honestly, you don't know what you've gotten yourself into. Are you his girlfriend? Or is he just spending time with you because there's something the both of you need to find out?
"T-Tooru." The name is unfamiliar on your tongue. But it felt good to say. "Doesn't that sound nice?" He gives you another one of his smiles. Your heart skips a beat.
That never used to happen before.
You ignore the feeling and continue to ask him about his upcoming volleyball match. "Can I come and watch this match?"
Oikawa's POV
My eyes widen once she asks that. If she goes to that match, she'll see Iwaizumi.
You're wondering why I haven't made any effort to introduce Y/N to my best friend. Actually, I'm doing everything I can to prevent their meeting. I've always had a bad feeling that she'll end up liking my best friend over me. Why?
Because I think Iwaizumi already likes her. No, I know he likes her. I know my own best friend. But he doesn't outright admit it to me. He would never. That's how selfless my best friend is.
"Oikawa?"
"Hey, didn't I tell you to call me Tooru?" I try to change the subject. I smirk as I see her blush in embarrassment. It's become one of my hobbies to make her blush as much as possible.
I push open the door to the café for her.
"Oh, Tooru-kun, Y/N-chan!" The lady greets us. A few weeks ago, I introduced Y/N to her, since she wouldn't stop referring to her as 'Tooru-kun's girlfriend'.
"Hi, we'll get the usual." I pull out a few bills and pay. It's like this every Monday for us. Y/N goes to our usual table. Once the lady gives me our food, I sit down at our table.
"So, Oi—Tooru, can I go to your match?" I try to hide any sign of worry and give her a smile.
"Sure."
***
We enter the gym. Bag slung over my shoulder, I scan the crowd for Y/N. I see her at the front row, wearing the sweater that I always liked to see her in. I give her a wave. Girls around her scream, each one thinking I was waving at them. She gives me a smile and screams, "Go Oikawa!" I smile back. It doesn't reach my eyes.
***
Tobio-chan does his god-like combo with the Shrimp. I know exactly where it's going. I know where to go to receive that perfect attack.
But I couldn't.
I watch in horror as I see the ball bounce off my arms out of control and onto the floor. In front of me, Karasuno cheers as they celebrate their victory. That was my last match as a third year.
I couldn't even reach nationals.
I head over to my school's side of the gym alongside my teammates. "THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!" I shout. The rest of my teammates follow suit. I bow my head, avoiding eye contact with her. I don't want her to see me like this.
I didn't want to see her like that. I knew she'd be crying. She's all for crying. But I had to look at her at least once. My heart stopped when I saw that she wasn't looking at me. She was looking at...
Iwaizumi.
Yes, she was crying, but she wasn't looking at me. Why wasn't she looking at me? I was close to letting my tears fall, but I blinked them back. Jealousy overcame the feeling of loss. I don't wait for her after the event. I go straight into the shower room. Pathetic. I'm pathetic. I'm like this because she was looking at someone else.
But she was looking at your best friend. A voice inside me whispers. I let the sobs I was trying so hard to contain escape me. I don't care if someone hears me. I lost today and she...
Why was she looking at Iwaizumi?
I keep beating myself up with that question. I need an answer. I rack my brain, my memories, for an answer. My memories which contain a countless number of lives repeated and relived.
A date pops into my head. July 16. Why is that date so familiar? The same day I rewinded out of old age.
"Agh!" I try not to collapse against the shower's floor as I feel my head throb with unbearable pain. Y/N's not here. I need to get through this alone. I rush out of the shower and pull my clothes on. I lean against a sink to try and keep my calm. A memory unfolds before my eyes. What is this?
I see myself holding my phone. I'm texting someone. The number is familiar. It's Iwaizumi's number.
Oikawa, Y/N and I are getting married next week. You should come....
The rest of his message is a blur as I watch myself hold my phone to my chest and cry. I clutch my head in pain. It's subsiding, but it's still there. I remain there until I can keep myself up.
This memory... It's from a lifetime ago. How could I forget?
You always forget.
***
Reader's POV
Tooru loses control of the ball. I feel my heart stop as my eyes widen. I see the other team cheer in victory. I feel tears fall down my cheeks. I should try to stop crying. I wipe my tears on the sleeve of my sweater.
I focus on Oikawa. His head is down. I know that he's trying his best not to cry. Scanning Aoba Johsai's volleyball team, a familiar face is among them. I lean on the barrier to get a closer look. I gasp and instantly feel a surge of tears falling down my cheeks like a waterfall.
Among the Aoba Johsai's volleyball team was my husband of my previous lifetime.
***
Oikawa's POV
I see her waiting outside the gym. She approaches the janitor.
"Excuse me, sir." She got his attention and he immediately stopped sweeping the floor. "What are you still doing here, young lady?" He asks. "Um, has the Aoba Johsai volleyball team left?"
"They left two hours ago. You should go home before it gets dark." He responds.
"I-I see. Thank you, sir." She makes her way out of the gym. I follow her from a safe distance. I made sure to wear a hoodie that was unfamiliar to her.
I just want to make sure she safely crosses the road. I don't make a sound as I follow her, making sure she doesn't notice me. I notice as she paused near the café, our regular dating spot. I pause too, and quickly hide in an alley.
I hear her sobs. I cry too.
***
The next Monday, I don't wait for her to go to the café. I head straight home. For the past week, I don't talk to my teammates as much.
It's by luck that the café is located on a road that leads to my house. I pause to look inside. She's there, seated at our usual seat. She makes eye contact with me. She just stares at me, her expression empty. I don't think I should come in, but I do either way.
I go inside to sit at the table. The lady doesn't greet me. It seems that she senses the misunderstanding between us. "Oikawa." She acknowledges my presence using my last name. It hurts. "L/N." I do the same.
"I'm sorry about last week."
"What are you apologizing for?" I ask, looking outside the window. "If anything, I should be apologizing for leaving you there. I shouldn't have done that."
"You followed me home anyway. Thank you." I chuckle. She knows? "I don't know what I'm apologizing for either, but I still want to—"
"Why were you looking at Iwaizumi?"
Reader's POV
I knew it was the time to explain everything. "Because he was my husband." His eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"
The idea of telling him the truth was daunting on it's own. There's a big chance that I'll rewind. But, I love him. He deserves an explanation. "Have you ever heard of the Rewind?" I close my eyes and expect to feel light-headed. But I don't go anywhere. I open my eyes and I'm still here.
Oikawa's here. He's smiling at me. Tears were freely streaming down his cheeks. "Happens to me every time." I cover my face with my hands and sob. After so many years... I found him.
He pulls my hands away and wipes away my tears. He cups my face. His lips meet mine.
Although we already know the truth about each other, doubts never failed to come. We wait and wait until one, or the both of us rewind. What if we made the wrong choice?
The Rewind never comes.

Loss--Giveaway for Shaolinqueen
Here is the story for our second place winner @shaolinqueen ! They wanted the aftermath of the Karasuno game with a side of angst and some IWAOI. And Kuroken which are mentioned but I could not find a good way to have them be bigger in the work and I offed Bokuto, Hanamaki, and Matsukawa as my apology presents for that :) I hope you like it!
Read it on AO3
The loss hurt.
The dropping of that ball near the wooden bleachers. Oikawa’s ravenous eyes glaring off behind him, a red spot growing on his arm where the ball propelled backwards.
The silence seemed to hang forever until—cheers. Screaming fans erupting in shouts to celebrate the great victory of the no longer clipped crows.
Iwaizumi spun around quickly to look at his team. Oikawa was standing now, Iwa had no idea how. He looked so broken. But he quickly attempted to blink it away spreading his arms wide to welcome his team.
Iwaizumi had no idea what he said. His vision blurred and sound seemed to switch in between frequencies like the radio on the bus to the match. He knew he was crying. He could feel the searing tears slide down his cheeks. He could not care less. He felt Oikawa’s arm slam against his back and he forced up whatever pride he could to thank the audience for their support.
He knew his feet were carrying him through the hallways to the changing area, but he was completely unaware of where he was. All he could see was the final ball—how could he have stopped it? How could he have led them to victory? He was the ace—there had to be something he could have done to win.
Now they would not get their fabled chance to take the crown from Shiratorizawa…Their last chance to knock down Ushijima before they all moved forward. What had they trained and fought so hard for all season if not to beat their rivals once and for all?
He ran a shaking hand through his sweat soaked hair as he tried to focus on his breathing to calm down, but all he could see was Oikawa’s broken face when he closed his eyes. His hands and arms stung where the ball ruthlessly pounded into his skin. He could practically feel himself spiking that one hit from Oikawa’s serve as he tumbled into the tables on the side of the court. His head sank, He trusted me…his ace…and I failed him…in our last game together.
The thought came before he had the chance to suppress it. He knew thinking about that would lead him down a long and dangerous road—but it was too late he was already there.
Oikawa would be heading off to the top collegiate volleyball team in the country…and he would be on the sidelines…
This very well could have been the last game he ever played with Oikawa.
Air seemed to stop coming into his lungs. He felt as if he were drowning as he gripped his chest to try and slow his heart and concentrate on breathing. He gasped violently for another breath when a warm hand landed on his shoulder. He opened his eyes for the first time to see Tooru squatting down in front of him. Oikawa placed his hand on Iwaizumi’s cheek to wipe at a long stream of tears and smiled gently at him. Iwaizumi had not even realized he had been crying again.
He blinked rapidly as he attempted to call in his surroundings. He was in the changing area sitting on bench while the rest of Aoba Jousai stood quietly, changed, bags packed at the other side of the room by the door. Tooru kneeled in front of him, also changed into his track suit, two bags slung over his shoulder, the sun setting just behind him through the doorway.
His eyes were red and puffy but there was a twinge of burning pride in his chocolatey eyes. He heard Hanamaki sniffle quietly leaning against Mattsun behind Oikawa.
“The bus is here.” Tooru’s gentle smile remained as Iwaizumi nodded slowly rising to his feet. He stumbled slightly, balanced by Tooru, who grabbed his hand and pulled him quietly out of the room, the rest of the team following dutifully behind their captains.
…
Hajime did not remember falling asleep, but he woke up laying across Oikawa’s lap as the stars danced in the sky outside the bus window. The lights of the bus were off and it was clear that most of their team mates where either asleep or silently mourning the loss of the match. It was such a juxtaposition to that morning where the bus was full of raucous laughter and singing. Now the air felt heavy and uncomfortable whereas before it had been so light and cheery.
He shifted his attention to Oikawa who leaned gracefully against the window. Iwaizumi felt as Oikawa’s hand carded slowly through his hair while his eyes drifted out to the passing cars on the road.
“Stargazing?” Iwaizumi whispered harshly against the oppressive silence. Oikawa jumped slightly at the noise before smiling down at him,
“No, just enjoying a break from your horrible snoring.”
Iwaizumi stuck his tongue out playfully before falling serious again,
“Did you sleep?”
Oikawa shook his head as his eyes shifted back toward the night sky,
“No…but I’m okay, I’m not tired-“
“Bull shit. That was a long ass game everyones tired.”
Tooru frowned slightly,
“You’re sleeping in my bed tonight.”
Oikawa attempted to laugh but it came out more like an exhale as he nodded against the window.

…
Saying goodbye to the team was hard. They would have practice next week, and they still had several weeks of school to go, but the crushing loss of their dream victory against Shiratorizawa coupled with the future loss of the third years seemed to weigh on everyone’s mind.
Iwaizumi made sure that everyone had someone to walk back to their dorm with as Tooru leaned almost silently on Mattsun. Once the underclassman disappeared down the sidewalk he turned to this three best friends.
“Fuck us,” Hanamaki mumbled as he turned and began walking towards the Senior dorms. Everyone gave a resounded moan as they turned to follow behind him. Tooru shifted from leaning on Mattsun to Iwa like a leaf in the wind, the emotional and physical fatigue finally starting to him them.
The third years walked in relative silence only occasionally complaining about random aches and pains they experienced as they walked. The thrills of getting old Iwa had claimed.
They reached the dorm slower than they usually did. The sky was fully dark by now with the street lamps brightly guided their path. Their classmates populated the area laying in the grass around the large building, some tossing frisbees others chasing after girls as they weaved in and out of the people happily enjoying the warm weather outside the dorm. Everyone seemed to look up at them with excitement but quickly pretended like the had not when Iwaizumi sadly shook his head “no” as they passed. The group entered the dorm and elected for the elevator riding only up to the second floor before making the slow walk down the hallway to their doors. They reached Hanamaki and Mattsun’s first.
“See you in the morning guys,” Hanamaki sighed giving them both a quick hug before kicking his door in. Mattsun shook his head and followed in quickly after them.
They walked to their dorm in a silence that was uncomfortable but necessary. Iwaizumi looked over at Oikawa’s defeated expression. What was he supposed to say to that face? How could he make any of this better? He could never give Oikawa that victory…the one thing he wanted for the past three years.
Oikawa unlocked their door and pushed it open with his toe. The poorly taped polaroids of them flopping in the breeze as the heavy door swung open. Oikawa tossed his bag onto his bed and the flopped forward onto Iwaizumi’s bed with a dramatic sigh.
At least he is being dramatic again, that’s a good sign.
“I can’t believe we lost-“
“I’m sorry-“
They locked eyes as they both attempted to fill the silence. Iwaizumi felt the tugging urge to cry again but he attempted to swallow it. Seeing the shiny tears fall down Oikawa’s cheeks broke his will.
He slowly walked over and flopped onto his back next to Oikawa, their sniffling filling the room. Oikawa easily slithered on top of him locked his arm and leg around Iwaizumi’s body and burying his head into his chest. Iwaizumi wrapped his arms tightly around him at first just grounding him but then eventually tracing slow lines over his neck and back.
“I know how bad you wanted this,” Iwaizumi whispered. The moon illuminated a long streak of white light cutting through the ceiling of the dorm. Pale green starts twinkled across the white ceiling dancing in the moonlight. “Destroy Shiratorizawa” was hand written on a post it note stuck to the ceiling above Oikawa’s bed. It was a faded pink note, ripped from being taped and re-taped to ceiling after ceiling over the past three years. He swallowed hard and looked over at Oikawa. He was surprised to find him sitting up on the bed looking out the window again,
“We can’t win them all.”
Iwaizumi snorted, “Yeah we could’ve.”
Oikawa frowned shaking his head, “There were two things I wanted more than anything in my whole life…I got one of them…I’m happy.”
Iwaizumi rolled his eyes turning his attention back to the ceiling.
“Yeah and you’re going to kill at that school next year,” he scoffed. The bitterness was unintentional, but he was too vulnerable after the loss of the game today to control the venom that came out at the mention of Oikawa’s perfect future. The thoughts of him sitting on the sidelines, watching, waiting for Oikawa to win game after game. The flashes of him groaning through coursework he would probably hate because nothing mattered more to him than being on the court with Oikawa and now that would be gone.
“Why are you talking about that?”
Iwaizumi turned to find Oikawa staring at him in confusion, his head titled slightly to the side and his eyes impossibly wider than normal. Cute.
Iwaizumi shifted pushing a tucking a long piece of light brown hair behind his pointy ears, “The two things you’ve always wanted…to beat Shiratorizawa,” he struggled to choke out the name, “and to play on a great team in college.”
Oikawa stared blankly before his eyes crinkled into tight lines as he laughed loudly, “You’re so stupid Iwa-Chan! Dumb Iwa-Chan~!” He sang. A rush of anger filled Hajime’s mind as he struggled to push away from his teasing boyfriend, but Oikawa’s death grip on his body made it impossible to move,
“You’re an ass what do you want!?” He grumbled while squirming helplessly,
Oikawa regained full composure instantly and smiled a soft smile that many were never graced with, “You were right about Shira…Shiratorizawa,” he swallowed hard before returning to his smile, “but not the second one silly.” He leaned closer, his long eyelashes teasing against Hajime’s face and he began again, “The only other thing I have wanted as bad as that,” he placed a feather light kiss on Hajime’s nose causing it to wrinkle slightly, “is you.”
His lips found Iwaizumi’s easily and they met with a soft expertise that only comes from experience. After several moments they parted searching for breath. Iwaizumi rubbed his nose against Tooru’s softly watching the other smile,
“It was just a game,” Oikawa whispered lightly.
It was a lie, they both knew it. That game meant more than anything in the world to them—well almost more than anything. There was one thing that would always mean more no matter who was playing volleyball in college, no matter how many times Ushijima would boast about their loss to Karasuno in future meetings, no matter how hard they trained to win that game. Nothing would ever matter as much as the relationship they fought so hard to have. Nothing could ever mean more than their love.

Hyper Projection Engeki Haikyuu: Winners and Losers
Just got back from our second viewing of Winners and Losers tonight (Thursday) and I just had to note some things that happened.
Thursday-specific notes:
Shouri forgot to clip on his hair braids as fem!Kuroo/Oikawa’s fangirl when he first came on. They kept falling off during the performance, too. I wonder if he’ll keep increasing the comedy from that bit and if they’ll keep it in the stage play.
During one “off-screen” practice, one of Kousuke’s spikes hit Allen in the face and careened towards the audience. It definitely didn’t seem intentional as everyone in the crowd gasped and everyone on stage started cracking up. Allen ran off stage for a quick second and came back in time to threaten violence to Oikawa and say his next line a few seconds later.
Kaito carried on the joke later when the first years were gossiping about Yahaba. His weak spike hit Iwa-chan in the forehead and he said, “Déjà vu!” I wonder why... >.>
The hit became a light-hearted running gag. During another side practice, Sonde pantomimed tossing at Shouri’s fangirl twice and Shouri acted like he’d been hit in the forehead both times.
At one point, Hiroki had Kouhei and Shiota in a double-armed headlock and was alternating giving them cheek kisses. Confirmed by the multiple twittering fangirls around us.
The intermission introductions with Kuroo and Kenma were different. This time, instead of not understanding Kenma breaking the fourth wall, it appears he’s okay with the phone instructions but not something else? This time, a phone rang and Shouri went into the audience to find the perpetrator. Kenma picked up and I /think/ the person might’ve been asking for Kuroo’s digits.
Kenta added some improv during the “Good work” that Hinata says to Kageyama. He and Kazuma played charades in varying the syllables in the phrase.
Mart-san didn’t give Yamaguchi a banana this time before the start of the match. Kairi did some… weird impersonation that will remain untranslated.
When Tanaka was getting all over Tsukishima asks why Kageyama sounds like Tanaka-san, Hiroki drags him back and totally says, “Shaddap!” I think we were the only ones out of the audience who laughed at that.
They’re getting sillier with the dokidoki’s for each senpai when Yamaguchi comes out as pinch server. I can’t imagine how it’ll be for the DVD.
Takato kept snickering during the second intermission introduction. He was losing it when Shouri was talking about the other Nekoma players. This version won’t make it into the DVD but it would’ve been nice to know what was happening.
Kenta didn’t say “Kenma?” this time when fem!Kenma/Oikawa’s fangirl was hanging around.
Sunday-specific notes:
When Takeda calls Ukai to rephrase his “first sip of beer” line, Hayashi uses Ryoutarou to portray the store manager during the Keishin-chan, I'd like some mirin sake line (previously, the skit was a one-man joke). Ryoutarou took it in stride and was able to play with his part.
Kousuke hits Karasuno, either Ukai or Nishinoya, during that one spike (the Iwa-chan spike) that emits smoke off the side of the stage.
During Kageyama’s serve, Tatsunari was supposed to serve it out of bounds... but it didn’t go out! Matsukawa had to pick it up and throw it off stage. Everyone’s “It’s out!” line changed to “Was it out? Yeah, it was totally out... >.>”
Players with athletic tape this show: Tacchan (a single band around his left elbow), Allen, Ken-chan (one of his legs and the entire left side of his neck), and Kenshin (one side of his left arm).
Correction: When Suga gets switched in, he puts Nishinoya and Tanaka in headlocks and blows them silly kisses.
After the first intermission, Kageyama comes out instead of Kenma when Kuroo calls for the Brain during his Nekoma chant with the audience. Kuroo gets suuper confused, especially when Kageyama starts asking the audience to turn off their phones, and even more confused when Kenma comes out, tries to give the same instructions again, and pretends not to see Kageyama. A better summary is here.
During this bit, I think Kenma calls Kuroo “Shiro”. Which is funny because kuro means black and shiro means white, but Kuroo’s stage actor’s name is Shouri... ha, ha...
Ken-chan ends up rubbing young!Daichi/Nishinoya’s stomach during the baby third year flashback.
Yamaguchi got way close when he was practicing his kabedon with Mart-san! That was new.
The bag of groceries that Mart-san gives to Yamaguchi before the stage of the game contained glasses this time. So he picks it up and does Tsukishima’s “Shut up, Yamaguchi!” line.
Judai and Sonde stole Kousuke’s thunder during the Aoba Josai thank you’s by saying “Thank you for supporting the two of us” before the rest of Aoba Josai could finish their comments. More details on the curtain call here.
Ryoutarou was the only one who cried during his part in the curtain call. He posted after about it in his blog.
But honestly, everyone appeared to be truly crying during the ending dinner scene until the end of curtain call. As expected of the last night.
Common to all shows:
Hinata’s “Television of Oikawa’s Mind” where he acts out Oikawa’s thought process between Hinata’s “bring it" and “to me” signs. Kenta looks like he’s having a blast when he does his sultry “bring it”.
Ken-chan breaks the fourth wall during Yamaguchi’s practice flashback. Ennoshita is playing a female customer at Mart-san’s store when Daichi counts one of the team members on stage during the flashback. He calls to Ennoshita and the female customer/Ennoshita answers. XD
The admin for engekihaikyuu also saw the show and posted her reviews there. Go check them out, as they contain much more analysis than my impressions.
These really were three awesome performances. They make me want to start saving for a future trip to the next stage. I can’t wait until the DVD comes out!
