What's a niche/uncommon whump thing you love? (Could be a trope, whump for a specific character, a setting, anything)

even if I haven't done it much myself, I love a good apocalypse/post-apocalyptic setting (more Mad Max than Walking Dead though, I'm not a huge zombie fan)

sort of adjacent to that, dystopian settings! I don't know if I've seen much whump on here with those but they're so fun

ahhh I have such a good idea for a secret reverse sugar baby modern AU. it's sprizzy in my head but I think you could substitute other Izzy ships with only minor changes to details.

So basically the premise is that Ed left and took with him half the income that was propping up Izzy's tight budget. now that Izzy has to cover rent and bills in full instead of just half, he is struggling financially. He really can’t afford to live, honestly. But he's a proud man so he tries to hide it. Tries to tough it out and make it work.

But Lucius (or whoever you fancy) notices and tries to help without making it obvious he is helping because Izzy probably won’t accept help, especially from Lucius, off all people.

Lucius, trying to be subtle, starts:

-timing his smoke breaks so he can run into Izzy and annoy Izzy into ‘stealing’ the cigarette right out of Lucius’s mouth. because Izzy won’t ask to bum one, and helping izzy hands avoid nicotine withdrawal is basically a public service. Lucius is a hero for that.

-“ugh, I told them no pickles! Here, eat this stupid sandwich, I don’t want it anymore, I loathe pickles!” (Lucius likes pickles just fine) or getting ‘just sooooo full’ from drinking elaborate iced coffees that he can’t possibly finish more than half of his lunch and he doesn’t want to waste food but he’s going out straight after work and won’t be able to bring it home to put in the fridge for tomorrow and really you may as well eat it, Izzy, or it’s just going to sit in the trash bin stinking up the whole place.

-asking Izzy to walk him to the tube station after work ‘for safety’ but it’s really so Lucius can swipe an extra ride for Izzy on his transit card. sometimes when it’s cold and miserable enough to make Izzy ache Lucius will opt for cab or rideshare instead as soon as they hit the street, insisting it will be cheaper to split the ride. always drops Izzy off first, conveniently forgetting to split the fare

-buying izzy a cozy cashmere scarf and claiming that it was Buy One Get One Free when Lucius was scarf shopping for himself, but he didn’t see any other colors/patterns he liked and this one just screamed Izzy Hands. (And maybe a knit cap that Lucius claims he stole from the lost and found because it coordinates with the scarf so well)

-begging Izzy to come over and ‘fix’ something ‘broken’ at his place, conveniently near dinner time, just so Izzy can spend a few hours somewhere where the heat and lights aren’t turned way down low to save on utilities. Somewhere warm and bright, where the WiFi service hasn’t been turned off because of all the past due bills.

-constantly starting bets that Izzy can win. This backfires when Izzy starts to feel bad about taking Lucius’ money because he thinks Lucius is a typical starving artist type. Not knowing that Lucius makes $$$$ on furry art commissions and just doesn’t tell anyone about it because his friends, much as he loves them, have zero moderation and would cajole Lucius into partying all his savings away.

And all the while he is being sneakily generous, Lucius is trying to figure out how to trick Izzy into letting Lucius buy him a new winter wardrobe, treat him to lunch every day, and buy back the motorcycle Izzy had to pawn to pay off some debts Ed left when he blew town.

Late night thoughts vol. 1

It's 4 am and I cannot sleep so I'm just gonna splooge some random thoughts that I have (some positive, some negative, and some that's probably just nonsense.)

Uhh, I like to get negatives out of the way first so I guess I can start with that.

- Does anyone else miss when art/animation communities felt more niche but open? I'm particularily talking about the animation meme community here cause that's a community I've more or less lurked in for a long time. I remember a time when there was the big three of animation memes a lot of people and myself were inspired by. (I'm referring to early 2010's creators like Kay2036, Ezpups and Caramelcat123) It feels silly to say that what got me into art were a bunch of independent artists animating anime cats fighting eachother, but that's exactly what happened. I loved these creators (still do) and I looked forward to seeing what else these creators had to offer. As time went on, more creators came in the fray with a lot of cool talent and craftmanship and it was honestly very cool seeing what everyone had to offer. That's something I loved most about AMC, that so many were able to feel free to create whatever they wanted and how wonderful it paid off to see that creativity put into so many special masterpieces of independent art and animation, and that's something I'll always admire. So it breaks my heart to see what the AMC has became. Don't get me wrong, there's still a ton of great artists out there and y'all are fantastic, but I cannot help but feel like the environment in that community especially had gotten a lot more vile than what it started off as. To be fair, that's pretty much any community these days, I'm well aware of that. But I have never seen so much drama, so much infighting, and so much people being deplorable to eachother in my life that it's honestly sickening! I've always wanted to make my own animation memes and I still do, I have a TON of ideas I'd love to get to eventually, but if I ever decide to post them, don't expect me to engage much with the rest of the community. IMO, the best communities you can have are the small close ones you have with your best pals.

- For the past few years, I've been distancing myself from big social media branches and fandoms because of how toxic the environments can be for some of these spaces especially, and it's honestly helped a lot with my mental health (Deleting my Twitter and moving here has honestly been one of the best things I've done last year). It's partially why I've stopped posting so frequently, because really the only people I truly care about pleasing are me and all my close friend groups and found families I've built. I don't really care about statistics and platform building, if people like my stuff, then that's cool. I can look at a post I made with bigger numbers than usual and go "huh, that's pretty neat" and then move on talking about a crossover AU I've been cooking up with my boyfriend. That's not to say I don't appreciate my followers or people who like my content, I do. But know that what I make isn't catered to what'll get me the most attention, it's what'll make me and my family happy. And if people like that, then that's cool. Maybe every now and then I'll ask my followers what they'd like to see, maybe a fanart raffle or sketch request event, I think that'd be nice. But for the most part, this page is very, and I mean VERY self indulgent.

- Uhh I've been doing okay for the most part, personal issues I don't wanna get to aside. I've mainly been working on plushies, commissions and other self indulgent projects. I mentioned before that I got into the latest Cookie Run game, and that's pretty cool. I've mostly focused on making art for that and mine and my boyfriend's OC/AU projects. I'll post more about it when I get there, but for now uhh... gay people.

It has not actually been asked before! Your the first, so for anyone who’s interested in some Feral and Sly lore well feel free to click the read more since it’s kinda long lol

For the interest in Sun/Moon/Eclipse, Feral was honestly the first one to get drawn in, she has been a long time fan of fnaf, likes to brag about how good she was at the first few games (she is I’ve seen it lol) so her getting interested in SB was obvious, she especially like this one for it highly interactive gameplay

I on the other hand knew of fnaf but I was never in the fandoms or played any games, anything I knew about the games was either seen while scrolling thru tumblr or my little brother blasting a gameplay in our room and I didn’t mind listening in if it was YouTuber I liked as well

Feral got a bit interested in the boys after reading a few fics around last year June, she tried to catch my attention but I didn’t really bite at the time, it was around August were she caught my attention when she first drew them, saying they reminded her of me, even drew Sun with chipped rays as a little call to my SH scars but it kinda dropped off since we were in the midst of fighting with the system to let us get married lol

Around December it really kicked in for her and then me, I started delving into reading fics and searching for fan art and was like “oh shit das me” and feral ran with it saying let’s do self insert shit and I was totally down for it, it wasn’t the first time we did something we’re she put herself in and I was a character that I related to heavily

From there we started planning the storyline but decided to do little meant to be yours animatic to kick off some attention towards our stuff lol

As for what got us interested into writing and drawing? Honestly the answer is the same for both of us, we started drawing young them jumped into writing for our own little stories and ideas, we’ve both always been artistic from a young age and when we met it was one of the first things we bonded over, oh and I do also have a passion for singing as well! Which also caught her attention I used to send her audios all the time or sing on call for her

Just something about being able not only to write your own stories but create visual pieces really helps when you have extremely hyperactive minds and imagination, sometimes we yell at each other cuz someone says something cursed and cuz of how we can perfectly see the image in our mind it makes the cursed thought so much worse 😭

But yeah that’s pretty much it! Love of creativity and such started our art and writing passion and that led to us wanting to create our stuff now here with the lovely robo boys, we do have our projects of course, Feral plans on making a comic/book (2 in one kinda thing) that’s gonna be a trilogy and I have my own OC’s that I still world build with

Not to mention all our world building with OCs weve plan on making into story’s as well in the future ✨

last book/fic abandoned: hmm... i tried to read this rom-com called "you & me: a mlm single dads romance" while on holiday in SA, and i just... couldn't make it more than 5 chapters in. the cringe (& the VERY american focus of... everything...) was just too much for me, especially because i tried to read this right after a super delightful wlw rom-com recommended to me by darling @duquesademiel. after that, this one just... couldn't compare. at all.

currently reading: well, i'm back to work, so my time for books has unfortunately dropped exponentially... all i'm actively reading rn is a bunch of f1 rpf fics, to be perfectly honest

Introduction

This blog is a more realistic take on the Pokémon world that many know and love! Going for a down to earth, adult sort of vibe, so not everything will quite follow the games. Roleplay and 'asks' are totally okay, encouraged even, the Museum is for everyone to explore! Bishop (the Museum owner) and Fawn (member of the Pokémon research team) will be answering questions most of the time.

Museum's Mission

We aim not only to teach about the wonders of Pokémon, but to give you a sense of awe that sticks with you long after you leave! Everyone is welcome, no matter what the age or walk of life, and we have plenty of accommodations for any guest that needs them. We're a 'natural' museum that tends to focus on Pokémon themselves, their history, our coexistence and how they've touched our lives across the centuries. We work closely with various institutions in Galar-especially schools-to share our research and grow, and are always happy to take on new sponsors for those who wish to support our work.

Where we are

We're closest to Hammerlocke, in the 'C' area of the map, just an easy Train or Taxi ride away! If you can see the Giant's Cap, you're getting close! We've recently put up some signs and posters to point you in the right direction, and we've got helper Corvisquire for anyone who has trouble finding us. Just be careful on the way, we can get some rough sandstorms thanks to the Dusty Bowl.

What we offer

We have many educational tours of our exhibits, special events, and more in the works! We want everyone to enjoy what we have to offer, our staff and assistant Pokémon are always happy to help.

Bug Exhibit

We are home to a bug exhibit that is dedicated to bug type research and education! Visitors can learn all about them, while observing them in an exhibit that mimics their natural environment closely as possible. We boast many rare and unique Pokémon here. My personal pride and joy is our Beautifly Conservatory, our gardening staff has done an amazing job of making it beautiful, and it's a crowd favorite.

Aquarium Exhibit

Anyone who loves water dwelling Pokémon will enjoy our aquarium! We pride ourselves in giving our Pokémon the best of care, and sometimes take in rehab cases or Pokémon who would struggle in the wild, although I admit it's not our specialty-I would certainly recommend Dotaku Island for 'mons that need special attention. Feel free to interact with our more visitor friendly Pokémon, there's even a Mantyke petting tank for the kids!

Fossil Exhibit

Kingswood is home to a wide array of fossils, including some fascinating specimens that you can't find anywhere else! An interesting place to explore for anyone who enjoys the more historical side of what we do here. No, we don't have 'revived' Pokémon here at the moment, sometimes they tend to...struggle unless they have very special care.

We have a beautiful café if you need a rest during your visit, and we're growing our menu all the time!

Want special photos of your visit, or maybe you're looking for a fun souvenir? Drop by our gift shop, all proceeds go directly to Kingswood, which means you're supporting our hard working staff and keeping our darling Pokémon cared for with everything that you bring home. Can you revive fossils, like the Pewter Museum does?

That is not something that Kingswood offers at this time, although I admit as our museum grows it might be possible. It's a touchy subject that not all of our sponsors agree on, though...

Hey y'all! I've realized that I never did any type of intro post, so here it is!

My name is Atlas! I use He/Him pronouns. I'm Seventeen as of May, and I'm from Nebraska. I create writing and occasionally art content as well as whatever else comes to mind. I enjoy Steven Universe, Bee and Puppycat, space, paleo-anthropology(early hominids are my jam!), evolutionary bioligy, convergent evolution, marine biology(marine mammals and cartilagenous fish are my faves), clouds, foggy mornings(or just fog in general tbh), and the fall/spooky season!

I dislike bigots, capitalism, tacos, lavender, bananas, complete darkness, jumpscares, extreme gore....

We need some rules to keep the peace

- This should go without saying but: no incest ships, no shipping of minors with an age gap of over 2 years, and no minor/adult ships, including aged-up characters. The monks and Jack are 15-17 + Omi being just 12-13 in this universe anyway, and that part of the cast has known and had regular contact with adults such as Chase and Wuya since they were kids, not to mention the fact that that shipping them as freshly turned adults with much older characters would be really unsettling, and I'm explicitly saying this due to fandom spaces' unfortunate tendencies to think shipping a minor with an immortal being is okay due to their immortality somehow. People who support these ships or the people who ship them are not welcome here. Simply unfollow and dni if you do.

-No proshippers allowed, related to the above I guess. Will get blocked since I don't want to interact with them.

- No nsfw content of any adult characters either, but only since we want to keep this mostly sfw. Silly nsfw-ish jokes are allowed tho

- Please, if you are going to draw something for this au, drop the yellow skin racist caricature and make Omi look like an actual tan-skinned Chinese boy. And do not draw yellow skin Asians in general.

- This is my fic/au and I am thus the moderator and in charge of what is and is not canon to this au. Shows discrimination, starts drama, etc. I’m not here to tolerate your bullshit, get lost. This is not highschool, my blog is a safe space and it shall remain so.

Steals the art of other artists especially without crediting them and if you use AI for written responses. All this shows me is that you are an untrustworthy individual.

(On the topic of blocking) If I blocked you it could be for a number of reasons: I bothered you and want to avoid upsetting you further, I feel like we wouldn’t meld/vibe well, or I just feel ‘off’ about you. Don’t take it personally, I block liberally especially if I feel like if I don’t do so, it will lead to further conflict. This is done for my benefit and my mental health/wellbeing.

(If you contact me on a burner/side account or on someone else’s behalf to discuss why I blocked you - this can lead to one or two outcomes depending on level of severity): Outcome A, both you (and the person who contacted me on your behalf) will be blocked. Or, outcome B, depending on who you are and what happened between us, I’ll gladly talk things over civilly on DMs.

If l've upset you to the point where you'd rather not speak to me, please feel free to block me instead of soft-blocking. l'd rather have clarity than feel like our friendship is hanging by a thread. Blocking me makes it clear that we're done, which helps me heal and move on. I'm not one for grudges or petty fights—I prefer to avoid them and focus on living a happy life.

⭐️NOTIFICATIONS & SPAM: I've been around tumblr since 2013 and l've owned a wide variety of different blogs that have all eventually shut down since then, after i eventually settled down on my newest one and since that time I can say one thing for certain - I am not bothered by people spamming any of my blogs. I'm not too sure how it works for desktop users but tumblr has a way to organize your notifications (see image below), so, if I ever do get spammed as a precaution I just save my threads onto my drafts so that I can reply to them later and not lose them.

Updated to add: The only and absolute only exception to call-out culture / cancel culture that I will make is if and only if the individual being accused is a known abuser, stalker, pedophile, etc. However even then, I am one to require stone cold hard irrefutable evidence.

Do not drag me into your problems that you have with another RP blog - that is between you and them. If I personally feel the need/desire to block an individual who I believe will cause more problems for me or the people I interact with, then I will block them. End of story.

Omg hahaha i didn't expect this many people to like my lame ass farmer (i love my child 🫶). Tbh i haven’t pieced out everything about em myself and i'm just making doodles/illustrations of em and putting them together, especially in the cryptid department. But i can tell you some of the more basic stuff and maybe some of the cryptid things that I think are not gonna change…?

Anyways here are some of the writting stuff:

TRAITS:

The farmer can speak but just doesn't cause it, well they don't want to. They do occasionally when they feel like it or when it's necessary. Otherwise they just use a notepad or sign language. 

Tends to be quite curious, like borderline dumb curious. Went inside a water cave once because they thought there might be treasures inside of it. Got dragged out by their older cousin.

Silent fucker, doesn't make any sound usually when walking to places unless they are carrying something heavy. 

Got quite strong after moving to the farm, the farmwork and construction helped them build more strength. 

Falls asleep easily in uncomfortable places. Idk why the guy is just weird.

FAMILY:

The farmer has a family back in Zuzu city and some relatives near the valley, like a couple towns away( more lore I guess? There is so much haha). I have actually made a family tree for em but it's mostly sketching and the portraits are quite old so I will need to update it at some point. 

The farmer's family consists of one sister and two moms. The farmer and the sister are not adopted. 

Baby farmers' first words were bark. 

They are only close to one of their mom’s, their sister keeps them at arm's length (no idea why) and their mother is quite strict.

POST-FARM:

The farmer is in their mid 20’s and did not go to university, the guy took one lecture and dropped out. Instead they took some courses and job hopped until they landed in Joja. They worked there for only 3 years. 

Used to volunteer in the animal shelter, quite fond of animals. Sometimes they thought they could understand them.

Very minimalist when it comes to stuff like clothes, food and activity. They keep a certain amount of clothes since they don't find it necessary to have more than what they can use. If they do get new clothes it is usually because the old ones are destroyed. 

Used to live in a tiny apartment (I mean TINY, I will make a sketch of the old apartment if i remember.) somewhat resembled a studio apartment but less picturesque. But they liked it, felt cosy to them. 

Has actually quite a lot of friends even though they never tried to socialise, the guy is often described as “magnetic”. They do have a couple close friends and usually talk to them in their free time. 

Likes pickles as a snack and collects bear related stuff. On their weekends they would go to the animal sanctuary to look at bears and eat cucumbers.

RELATIONSHIPS:

HA, this bitch cant pull. They do attract but they can't pull, horrible at socialising, just awful. 

As said before even though they absolutely suck ASS at socializing, something about them is magnetic to people. But those people are usually kept at an arm 's distance, since the farmer knows that they don't seem to really have an interest in em.

Has had a couple relationships before, mostly stiff and boring ones since they never desired anyone to THAT extent. But if they do fall they fall hard. 

Their closest relationship right now in the valley is Linus, The wizard and Evelyn. They are trying really hard to befriend others but don't know how to properly approach it besides just giving them gifts and doing tasks for them. 

Does in fact have a thing for Shane. Poor guy is going through it. 

CRYPTID RELATED:

The farmer does have avian genes from the non grandpa side of the family.

The grandpa had “relations” with a forest guardian. By relations i mean that Gramps and the forest guardian become friends after Gramps comes across the secret woods and FG was like “hey i think you are cool and a good candidate as a future holder of the valley” and gramps was like “nice” and then he gave them some hair, skin and sweat. FG mixes it and after a year the farmer's mom and other siblings are born. 

They are kind of a “fae” I guess but i don't know if they qualify as they do have some of the traits but not all?

 When the green rain happens it  causes them to forcefully transmute into their more avian form. They have no control over it, since it's a new thing to them. Their wings are usually as big if not bigger than them and they get a tail. The change is mostly painless as for the most part its natural materials around them that helps them shape it. Besides the fur and feathers that shit is coming out of them.

The aftermath of the transmutation it's usually a lot of shedding and getting their instincts in check since when it happens their senses get heightened.  

Shane has seen them in the midst of a tranz when walking back from the mines, it was one of the first times the farmer started noticing the weird stuff going on with them.

Oh yeah, they do have fangs or something similar to it, they occasionally puncture their tongue so they are unable to speak for a certain amount of time.

Chi Sao sucks

I remember being at a seminar some years ago and doing chi sao with some guy. I had already become more relaxed about chi sao in terms of not seeing it as a scrap or a competitive tool. This guy was confident and good and I rolled to what I thought was his level. i.e, I wasn’t struggling to hit him as often as I could. I would enjoy the conversation without the need for too many exclamation marks. This meant I was quite happy to let him dominate the flow a little and just respond. Sometimes he’d make good use of the space he created. We’d have a good exchange, I thought. At the end he said “How long have you been doing Wing Chun?’ I think it was around 10 years, so I said so. He started laughing.. literally laughing.. “10 years? I’ve been doing it for 2!” in a way that meant, how come I’ve done so well against you? So that, unfortunately did hit my ego.. because to him I looked like I had taken 10 years to do what he did in 2. I wanted to say “I went easy on you” but man that would sound like sour grapes or something. Instead I let him have that good feeling anyway. What do I care? He was definitely good and deserved the confidence, but I remember that event as being a turning point in how I think about, and observe ego (my own, especially) in chi sao.

Chi sao is fun. Chi sao is kind of the only thing people really want to be doing when they go to Wing Chun. I remember watching people doing chi sao and thinking “Man, I want to do that, not stand here stepping and punching”. So when people start doing chi sao, they sort of feel like they’re actually doing real kung fu for the first time.

What feels great about chi sao is that you’re in a state of flow. You’re not practising the same technique over and over while being corrected, like some kind of task.You are truly in the moment and you can’t think about anything else. You are reacting to the smallest and quickest of movements to avoid being hit, or so you can land something on your training partner.

So, chi sao doesn’t suck? Well... chi sao itself is great, but only if you and your partner are doing it in a way that means it doesn’t suck. Chi sao is nothing like sparring, it’s nowhere near a fight. Chi sao is, when it’s viewed properly, an exercise with a limited scope.

There are things in Wing Chun that are truly brilliant and really speak to how a martial art trains us to be aware of our mind-body connection. ‘Lut sao jic chueng’ for example is a concept that chi sao can develop that is a genuine asset to the art. It roughly translates as ‘hand free, spring forward’. If you have contact with someone and through that contact you can feel that their guard/path to strike is not open, as soon as that path opens up, you strike. This doesn’t mean you’re pushing against someone’s arm and as soon as they drop their arm your potential energy is turned into kinetic energy. Lut sau jic chung is about your brain registering the change/loss of contact, and engaging your body to strike. Chi sao being a dynamic exercise means that you’re training to recognise that stimuli/response again and again. 

Chi sao also trains you to ensure your positions are sound. If your elbow in tan sau is too close to your body, someone can tell you by hitting you. It can teach you distance, timing, and angles like nothing else.

So what is the problem with chi sao? It’s when people muddy the waters and mutate chi sao into something it isn’t. We are all human and I am as guilty of the things I’m about to raise as anyone else. Maybe I’m more guilty of them and that’s how I’m so keenly aware of them. Everyone has an ego. When you become a martial artist, you go through differing processes depending on your chosen style. You might line up in rows with a white belt on while the black belts stand the other side of the room. You might be put in a corner and taught how to stand up properly, while people are doing the fun stuff over in the other corner. When you reach a certain level, either through belt systems or just by seeing the ratio of people senior and junior to you shift in balance, you will likely have experienced some of what I’m going to say.

When you engage in sparring or in something chi sao, you are holding a mirror up to your ability and therefore your ego is pricked.

This is an unhealthy approach in any martial art. The problem when it comes to chi sao is that chi sao isn’t simply about hitting your opponent. If chi sao isn’t full-contact sparring, then there is a limited scope to it. That limited scope clashes with people and their egos and manifests in several ways.

HItbacks

If someone senior to you, let’s say it’s your instructor, hits you, you take it in your stride. He/she is your instructor, you want them to be better than you. Why? Because it gives you a feeling that the power balance / progression exists for a reason. Your ego isn’t damaged at all. When you train with someone quite new and inexperienced, you would assume then that you would be to them as your instructor is to you i.e. again, the ranking and standing in the world of you dojo is written in the cosmos. So what happens when someone you see as inferior to you, hits you? This isn’t meant to be, is it? They must be doing something unfair, or outside of the rules of the art! You try to respond with dominance... I have to show them I’m senior to them and I know more and I’ve trained more.

So when someone gets hit there may be a tendency to do all they can to hit back as soon as possible. Tit for tat.

In theory, there’s nothing wrong with this. You SHOULD train yourself to retaliate even after being hit. That’s GOOD. Right?

Chi sao is not a fight. Real fights can be messy and scrappy. If you want to fight, put on some gloves and put 2 minutes on the clock and really hit each other. No, seriously, do this! When you’ve calmed down again, do chi sao.

Chi sao isn’t about scoring points or ippons. If someone managed to execute a technique that resulted in you receiving a clean and deliberate hit, just accept it. Actually, no, you can stop what you’re doing and ask them what they did, and you can develop the ideal response and then drill that for a minute. That would serve you both so much better. Giving them a flick with the back of your hand as a call and answer thing is shitty. Long strong arm

Sometimes in chi sao you break out into single arm contact on the outside gate. Like crossed swords. If the shoulders are angled and the contact is closer to the wrist of each person, you’ve essentially changed range. If you have to step to make contact, you’re really in a boxing or long range now. So many people, including sifus I have a great deal of respect for, will step to this range and tense/strengthen their mun sau arm to the point that the other person is unable to do anything without stepping in (it’s a trap).

This is not to say that this is illegitimate in some way, but why are you breaking the range of chi sao? It’s part of a non-verbal body language of domination and torment that someone who feels superior will do. Which brings me onto the next point. Starting and stopping

Chi sao starts with the characteristic rolling of interlocked tan/bong and fook sau. This serves the purpose of creating a dynamic neutral starting point. The movements would disguise any small twitches and flinches (magicians always say that the big movement hides the small one). The double-handed rolling leads to someone creating an opening somehow and then the free-flow of chi sao commences. 

There’s a strange non-verbal agreement as to when to return to rolling after a period of free-flowing interaction. Through subtle body language when there’s a pause in the action, both participants will reset to a neutral state. 

One way in which people can make chi sao an antagonistic experience is by forcing a return to rolling early. Let’s say you’re rolling and your partner initiates an opening. You defend, you capitalise on something in their position and you are looking good to take control of centre and possibly set up a trap, or whatever.. then they step away, drop their hands out and offer them up in the tan/fook position clearly instigating rolling again. Hang on! You were about to do some amazing Wing Chun there! Well they decided they wanted to return to rolling and they’re in charge, ok?

The opposite can happen to. When you clearly reach a kind of stalemate position where you’re kind of both trapped or both your positions are looking less than textbook, you know it makes sense to just go back to a neutral rolling. But when you clearly go to reset, they throw in a punch to your ribs. You want to say “Oi, that’s cheeky” but you realise it looks like you’re a sore loser. You can’t say “I wasn’t expecting that”, because how petty does that look? So then you’re tempted to do a hitback (see above). Sometimes if someone is being domineering in chi sao, they’ll seemingly be the one to decide when to roll and when to have free play. It’s a weird power move. The only way I can think to deal with it, is to ask to slowly repeat what just happened and ask if you can dok sau (slow collaborative chi sao) from that point on. Maybe also saying “I was going to look at how I recover/capitalise on this position we’d got to”

Glancing blows

As chi sao isn’t a fight and nor is it a sport, there’s no real way to evaluate a strike. Common sense would tell you that if you’d trapped both your partner’s hands and could slowly and definitively draw a line to their chin with your fist and forearm aligned, you’d have been able to deliver a proper blow. But what about when you use some lut sao jic chung and your hand moves about an inch limply onto the chest of your partner. Is that a ‘hit’? Is it a ‘win’? Perhaps they’d eat that hit for breakfast and follow it with an elbow strike to your nose?  So a hit in chi sao isn’t necessarily a checkmate. Surely the goal is to land contact on the person’s face/chest/ribs? That’s the ultimate goal of chi sao right? No.

If you fail to strike when there’s a clear opening, then yeah that’s bad and you should feel bad. But hitting at all costs is how chi sao descends into a schoolyard squabble. 

I’ve been here. I’ve felt like the more times I can touch my partner’s torso or face, the more I am winning. But I’ve also felt really annoyed when someone has just gone to hit me, I’ve done a nice gang sao or jum sao and with their hand a few inches off course they’ve just jerked their hand like a dead fish to slap a knuckle or two against me. Even though I know that’s not really worth anything, it still pricks the ego. It pricks the ego partly because you know they feel like they got you, and now you want to hit them back or yell “doesn’t count” or something childish like that.

So what’s the answer?

Ignore it. Really, just ignore it. Let them have it if that’s what they want.

Something I would do is decide that I’m not going to try and hit them. Just defend. They don’t know that’s what I’m doing, but somehow it changes the balance of things. I know that if I start to try and hit back in this situation, it’ll just deteriorate. Both of you will start flailing wildly as it becomes a war of attrition. Perhaps one of you will try to look as though you’re satisfied and then return to rolling like nothing happened.

Grinning and looking away

Ever seen people doing chi sao and one of them grinning inanely? There’s a few things going on, i think. Firstly I think people want to seem relaxed and breezy while they’re engaged in something where their ego might take a knock. Their faces beam with a wide grin as if to say “actually guys, I’m super chill about this, even if I look like I’m fucking tense as fuck”. If you look like you’re concentrating and intense, then when you get hit, or fail to hit, you might look worse for it.

I think it also is a natural response to show lack of aggression, which is probably an evolved social behaviour.

The problem is that it can look condescending. I’m not saying not to smile, be happy when doing chi sao. Smile! Just make sure your chi sao is congruous with your emotions, be lighter, be easier, be less rooted in your ego.

Another thing that happens a lot is people looking away. Are you even paying attention? The weird thing here is that sometimes chi sao is easier when you’re looking away. You are responding to the feeling of contact, rather than what you perceive to be about to happen by looking.

Conclusion

I will say now that I’ve definitely experienced all of these myself. But not only that, I’ve seen very very respected and great sifus do chi sao with each other and this behaviour emerge.

The truth is that we place too much onto chi sao in Wing Chun because there is no sparring that doesn’t involve gloves or doesn’t change into another style. We need to recognise that chi sao is another drill; just a drill with a lot more variables at play. A drill is something where both partners are working to improve each other. Improvement is not seen through the sloppy substandard behaviours I’ve outlined in this post.

We need to develop in Wing Chun a hybridisation between drills and chi sao and a more realistic application of technique that borders on sparring. Chi sao is about close range/double hand contact. Whereas in reality people will stand out of range, will throw longer punches, flail with wider arcs, go to grapple or takedown. Chi sao doesn’t cover any of that so it can’t do the job of replicating the chaos of an actual fight. Learn to train in harmony with your partner and chi sao is great.

LMAO okay so I've seen a good handful of older/mafia au designs for Floyd and Jade and a lot of them have either both of them with double sleeves or Floyd with sleeves and Jade with a back piece- though I've also seen somewhere both of them having one sleeve on the opposite side

Right now I'm just messing around so I don't have any official tattoo designs for either of them, but I do know I want Floyd with at LEAST the double sleeves, and Jade with some pieces he keeps hidden by mostly wearing business attire lmao

Though you also reminded me! Eels also have terrible eyesight! So I've seen people both having the headcanon that the twins wear contacts, and also the headcanon that Azul needs glasses now because he did a deal to give part of his vision to both of them

Absolutley he wouldn't mind helping anyone set up games on their computer lmao, especially if it's a hard to get visual novel that he's a fan of because he's the type to want everyone to play and love the games he loves

He's definitely dropped hundreds of hours into "creature crossing" with one of those islands with tons of customization and cute shit, and his "island creatures" are mostly cats with a couple dogs and the pegasus LMAO

Also while he's not directly inspired by any specific character, since he's in Ignihyde he does have a little Greek mythos theming and has some inspiration from Eros, which is also why he's very "love" themed/romantic

OH MAN I'm actually not 100% sure which moray I think the twins would be, I'd have to look more into them specifically

But I did want to mention that my idiot self is tempted to make Yet Another Oc (though I probably won't post this one since I feel very oc heavy already) that's also a moray- but specifically a snowflake just because wow I want to make a design around the coloration they have 😭

I wasn't able to screenshot everything you sent but it was absolutley fun hearing about the dorm idea you have!! I love hearing about new dorm concepts and I've seen a couple nightmare before christmas dorms so it's neat to see the different ideas people have! Also no way do Eri and Rika sound like knock offs of the twins lmao they both sound really fun and I like how they juxtapose one another- also how you have their whole family worked out??? It just reminded me I need to do some more backstory work for my group lmao but honestly it was really cool reading about them so don't even worry about long asks or anything!
