so..... i wanted to edit a short video. its true, i did. so instead of purchasing or subscribing to yet another program for a kindling hobby i looked up free editing software. but i needed to get it Quick and Without Much Thought - cause my hands were Oh so hungry to edit the thing i'd filmed for this specific project today,

aaand so i picked the top placement of a top twelve best free editing programs of 2023

(can you count the potential pitfalls of mistakes in this one sentence?)

and so. i clicmked it and wow! in browser!! thats great.

opened it up and:

wow! its easy to understand,

it reminds me of old programs i used before way back,

and its just. intuitive user friendly enough,

but also with enough bigger boyer tools for me to work with, so i can feel like a bigger boy.

and yea, many features are paywalled, but theres cheaper and manual versions for all of them -

(and those features not being this i minded, i find manual subtitling for example to be kind of a fun and fulfilling problem.)

it was seeming. cool!

but. as i have now layed an hour or so on working on this progrem and project.... i realize to my intense fear and budding dissapointment........

Making Of: Soundless's New Opening

Opening sequences for our visual novels have always been something I've dreamed of, but now, THE DREAM IS REAL.

Opening movies are what first got me into visual novels. If it weren't for (a misheard lyrics version of) Nursery Rhyme's opening (link)* appearing in my recommended on YouTube when my age was in the single digits, I don't really know if I'd be here writing this right now?

Because of that, I've always really wanted to make an opening movie for a visual novel I made. I've played around with various editing programs throughout my life, and unfortunately, it's been easier for me to comprehend timeline-based editing over node-based editing. Making a proper opening video with motion graphics would have been a time-consuming process and wouldn't have even been considered for Final Verse had it not been for a friend helping me get the full Adobe suite. Thank you!!

Opening Fanatic's First Opening

Now with a tool that I could easily understand nearly right out the gate (After Effects), it was time to get started on the opening. I always personally regarded Ramine's (link) 裏路地 (Backstreet) as the "main theme" of Soundless, primarily because it fits right in with the oppressive, industrial tracks that really make the Three Denpa Kings shine to me. It also serves as a rather defining leitmotif of Mercy's situation (or at least as defining as a free-use track can get). So, selecting it as the opening song was an easy decision. I cut it to a good opening-friendly length and that was that.

Next, however, came figuring out exactly what would happen. I took inspiration from both the opening sequence of Jisatsu101 and SayoOshi's demo movie, as well as the various Makki, shoujobyou. teasers that had been released while it was in production hell. I also wanted to continue the trend of everything in Soundless looking like it's part of a time period that's older than it actually is, meaning that everything had to stay simple, as if I were working on older hardware and software. This made things very easy for someone like me, who is, by all accounts, an After Effects newbie.

I wrote out what I wanted to happen in a Notepad file. Originally, two characters were going to appear on the screen at a time with less credits interspersed between them, but then I found out that took way too little time, and there was a huge gap between the roll call and the final sequence with all the CGs and quotes flashing by. So, instead, I did one each for all the kids and then a final double cardn for the adults, and viola! It fit perfectly!

Beyond that, it was a simple copy and paste job. The part at the start, too, didn't really take much thought or time. After Effects even has a cool built-in typewriter effect. I learned pretty quickly that you could edit smaller things in compositions and then drop that into the larger composition (I didn't try out precomp, though). The dissolves that resemble the in-game dissolves were done with the same images I use for those transitions.

Sorry to anyone who actually knows how to use this program efficiently for showing you this.

If I had to point out a part that gave me a lot of trouble, it would definitely be when the screen fills up with "No mercy for Mercy!" at the very end for a transition to black. Like I said, I'm new to this, and I also wanted to finish it in a day, so I just did it on the fly in a comp without looking up any tutorials. There was a LOT of copying and pasting and adjusting, but eventually, I managed. This part was inspired by the first scene of SayoOshi, by the way! What filled up the screen in SayoOshi was just "...!"

The photosensitive version was then edited in Sony Vegas, where I changed the contrast some and then dropped a dim over the flashy bit for good measure. This is the version uploaded to the YouTube channel; for those of you who don't need it, you'll be able to see it in-game when Final Verse releases!

This opening will also be getting an update if the 2023 art update happens. I think it would be cool if you could also toggle between openings that either use the new art or the old art when you choose your preference.

That concludes this issue. Tomorrow I'll go over modifications to the content warnings at the start.

*I didn't know this was a misheard lyrics video when I found it. It's only after I looked through my old favorites and saw it again a few months ago did I realize that's what I had watched all those years ago. I'm never not going to hear 切ない穴と尻 (painful butthole and ass) when I listen to it anymore.

If you're like me and have sworn off Adobe, I highly recommend it. I've been messing with it all day to begin setting up my first volume for print, and I love it so far, especially after trying other budget publishing softwares. Can't recommend it enough.

BATW Update + Ambrosia’s Tips

Good evening, everybody! Some of you might recognize this from Ambrosia’s. It’s also one of her future costumes and hairstyles in Beauty and the War (X Playing Pieces). Now, I assume you all would have voted for which style you prefer, so I won’t have to make two different versions all the time.

If you’ve played Ambrosia’s, you’ll be able to see the animation as well - her shoulders rising and falling as she breathes. Her eyes flicker and her hair rustles.

The other characters will have similar animations with some differences. 

About this costume specifically, it’s meant to be evocative of a rose. The red shawl makes up the encircling petals, while the green floor-length skirt is like the stem. Can you see it?

Anyway, I’ve been working on the programming/writing for Beauty and the War (X Playing Pieces) lately. Let me give you a brief preview. I’ve edited it to be in first-person story format (from Ambrosia’s perspective) since I feel odd just plunking it down here in game format.

“It’s the Vi I can’t really trust,” Sir Chase said, his eyes like hard flints. “Especially that prince. What’s his name?  Alexandrite?”

I scarcely nodded before he continued, “He’s responsible for more than half of our battles – the ones that could be called massacres. He’s the one who has Onyx on a leash."

At that, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Oh, Sir Chase!"

“What? It’s true, isn’t it? Onyx is the prince’s dog. The king’s too, but it’s not like the king does anything other than lay with our women.”  His frown deepened. “For that matter, I don’t trust Onyx either. I feel like he enjoys seeing our men bleed.”

His hazel eyes darkened as he added in a mutter, “Stinkin’ war chief." He snapped his gaze back to me. “In fact, I don’t know which one of the Vi I would really want to sit down and share a meal with."

I wished I could have changed his mind by extolling a few of the Vi’s virtues, but what could I have said? Would he have wanted to hear about how strong and stalwartly the Vi defended us when it spelled their demise?

Would he have wanted to hear how they were our hero when they were the perpetrator behind the Trold’s downfall?

Truth be told, I scarcely even knew the Vi on a personal level.

I couldn’t say that Sir Onyx was an experienced veteran with sage wisdom and a hearty laugh when I never ate with him myself. I couldn’t even tell you how his laugh sounded like.  I had never seen him without his helmet myself.

No, that wasn’t quite right.

I had seen him without his helmet once. I had seen the prince’s visage at that time as well. However, it was so long ago and amidst so many people that I could hardly begin to remember.

Something I will note about the above:

❀ Depending on your choices, you may miss this scene, but I wanted you to learn a little more about the Vi’s reputation, so there you go.

✿ Within a social circle, Ambrosia tends to be the quieter one. In the demo, Jasmine and Rosemary will sometimes go back and forth, while Ambrosia listens or gently tries to keep the peace.

Rosemary is outgoing, Jasmine is opinionated, and Ambrosia is the shy sweetheart. She doesn’t want to interrupt the flow of conversation, and she sees herself as a person who neither draws attention nor deserves it, so it’s better if someone more interesting speaks.

Of course, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have thoughts or strong feelings, as you might have observed in the excerpt above.

By the way, I’m not sure if anyone’s realized this, but Ambrosia is meant to speak with a hint of an “imperfect” accent. Reminiscent of British and oriental - but not the stereotyped sound you might hear in a movie or TV show. Closer to the kind you might hear when someone speaks another language and English isn’t their native tongue.

On one hand, her soft-spoken intonation is a product of her demure nature. On the other...well, I’ll let you find that out yourself later, but it’s why X wonders (in X’s Notes and the bonus scene, pictured directly below) whether she really has an accent.

I’ll leave that there as food for thought. On a side note, I’ve updated Beauty and the War (X Playing Pieces) recently to fix minor bugs and typos! I’ve also increased the volume of Ambrosia’s lines since someone mentioned it was a tad low. A big thank you to all of you who are helping us this way.

Now then! Let me give you some tips for when you pay a visit to Ambrosia’s.  ♥

- This is a super short game! Think of it as being episodic, with each update bringing in new features.

- You will run out of questions to ask her. At that point in time, feel free to put down the game and wait for the update. Pay her a visit any time you want some company! The game will automatically save your current number of relationship points.

- When you’re talking to her, don’t forget that it’s a conversation. In between questions, you may want to wait around for her to say something. It shouldn’t take her too long to speak. If you shoot off questions in a row, it’ll sound like a job interview or an interrogation, right? But you can certainly do that if you want to.

- If you raise her suspicion/make her feel Guarded, this is easily fixed. You don’t have to re-download the whole game. In real life, what would you do if you accidentally alarmed someone? You could change the subject to something happier or do something else (like play a game or watch TV). You could also exit the game and come back.

- If you want to know if she’s feeling Guarded, make these choices: Talk to Ambrosia >> You wanted to ask... >> Something in general. >> Ask about how she’s doing.

If you get a statement similar to the screenshot above, that means she’s feeling Guarded.

You can ask her how she’s doing as many times as you want! She won’t treat it as hostile or like an interrogation. She’s happy and honored you’re interested in seeing how she’s doing.

- You don’t have to play in real-time! This is only an option. If you don’t have time for that, you can simulate it by exiting the game and coming back in.  Exiting the game and coming back in is kind of like your webpage’s refresh button.

- You can share your problems with Ambrosia by talking to the screen OR making the following choices: Talk to Ambrosia >> You wanted to talk about... >> You’re feeling down about... >> Any choice (except for Back) >>  Any choice (except for Back)

If you wait around, she’ll say something different when you wait around for her to speak.

If you tell her about an upcoming exam/test or doctor’s appointment, she’ll say something different when you close the game and come back.

- When it comes to watching TV, she won’t recognize every series you type down, but you may be surprised by what she does! As a general rule, she doesn’t like graphic series or shows with offensive content.

If you do pick something that she’s not comfortable with, she’ll let you know! Other times, she may try to push herself to watch what you want. She tries to look for the positive in anything you watch.  But expect her to close her eyes during any scary scenes!

In the screenshot above, this is something she murmurs during one of your TV sittings. (In this case, we randomly went with Game of Thrones.)

- What’s that Update button for? Beauty and the War (X Playing Pieces) updates. Each game update/episode will see something new when you click that button!

- Do you want to restart the game? We strongly recommend reading the in-game How to Play, which shows up as one of the beginning choices when you start up Ambrosia’s.

To summarize, here are possible ways to approach Ambrosia (whether it’s the best way or not is up to you!):

♥ Have a conversation with her and don’t ask her too many questions straight in a row. (Make statements by choosing to talk to her about something or wait for her to speak. You can also do some other activities if you like.)

♥ Periodically ask about how she’s doing if you want to know if she’s feeling Guarded (and thus, less forthcoming).

♥ Playing games, watching TV and talking to her will give you a better relationship. When it comes to talking, don’t forget that you might want to treat it like a conversation (i.e. occasionally make statements and/or let her say something to you).

♥ Exit the game and come back to give Ambrosia some space. She’ll treat it as if you stepped out the room and came back. Made a mistake with her? This is what you want to do. It’ll be like refreshing your web browser! 

♥ Forget all that and do whatever you want! If you want to grill her with questions, go for it. Do you want to ask her how she’s doing after every action? You can! How you interact with her is entirely your choice.

♥ Please be patient when waiting for the next update. The story will continue in, shall we say, the next “episode.” After you’ve done all you can do, all you can do is answer the survey and/or wait! Your relationship will carry over to the next update.

♥ If you want to restart the game, read the in-game How to Play for more details. By re-downloading the game, you can restart it...but the How to Play will give you more details! 

♥ Feel free to join the Discord. Whether you’ve played Don’t Take This Risk, Beauty and the War (X Playing Pieces), or any one of our other games, you’re welcome there.

As a side note...if you want to maximize your relationship with her, it’s your conversations and activities that matter most. If a week passes but you don’t speak with her, it’ll count for very little. 

What does this mean? If you don’t want to play the game over the course of a few days, spam the exit button and then charge straight back in.  As I said, exiting the game and coming back will be the same as you leaving and returning. An alternative to playing it in real-time.

Tips for the Don’t Take This Risk easter egg:

♥ There’s a 1-in-23 chance of getting it when you first open the game!

♥ You have to specify yourself as female in the prologue.

♥ It won’t show up at all if you exit the game and come back under an hour. Wait at least an hour before trying again.

An update for the game is on the way, so be sure to get your survey answers in! This is your time to let me know what you want to do.

You might have noticed that it’s impossible to go outside. Not to mention, there’s only one game you can play with her (Rock, Paper, Scissors). That’s because I wanted you to tell me where you want to go and what you want to do in the survey. While I could think up a series of random events and activities, I wanted you all to get involved this time. How do you make the gifs with the characters faces over them?

H-h-ho boy. Lemme take you on a journey friend. 

It starts with a friendly site called ezgif.com/split!! 

You simply find a GIF file that you’ve seen online and upload either the file or the URL to get the image out. :0cI used a URL from google images for this.

The site then splits the gif into every s i n g  l e  frame that’s in the file; Like so! (Make sure to set it to where it outputs PNG formats :0c )

Download as a ZIP or else you gonna have to download all the frames one by one ///and I don’t think anyone has the time nor effort to do that///

Once you have all the images in a ZIP, you’re going to make a new folder, specifically for all the frames, and extract them there. Name the folder whatever you please, so as long as it’s recognizable and easy to access. 

This is when I carry everything over to my handy-dandy Paint Tool SAI. If you don’t have it, then you can get it for free here from this DeviantArt journal. (Warning for those virus ads on the download sites, download at yer own risk, though I’ve had no problems so idk)

Now depending on the number of frames, I will either make a whole sai file or open up the PNGs individually. (Normally if it’s 25 frames or less I’ll open them individually. 26+ gets its own sai file.) Thank goodness this gif only has 20 frames… o-o

Then comes the fun part: the character of choice. Now, since I’m neck deep into Don’t Starve and consider myself absolute trash, I have chosen to use the Amazing Maxwell for this simple demo.

Maxwell and the other Don’t Starve characters all have transparent example sheets that I use when making these gifs, which is way easy to edit and manipulate; though if your fandom/show/game/comic doesn’t have these, you’re gonna have to rely on original content, some screenshots, or just simply drawing your own faces. ; o ;

Ironically in this case, I wasn’t satisfied with any of the given expressions so I took matters into my own hands,,,,

Once you have the character’s head, with the right expression(s) you then copy and paste the head over the frames and adjust to your heart’s content. You do this to every frame until you’re satisfied. 

Finally, when all the frames are complete, you may add a watermark if you wish though it’s not necessary. If your gif requires you to make the sai file with all the layers, you’re gonna have to save the frames individually one by one, otherwise all the frames are stand-alone.

When the frames are 100% done-a-rooni, you’re gonna carry your haul over to the blessed site known as http://gifmaker.me/ where you’ll then upload the frames in order. 

After that you adjust how fast you want your frames to transition and click the create button!! :Dc

Then you download it and do whatever you wish with the gif. Spam it in a Discord group? Fine by me. Upload to Reddit as a quirky response? Go ahead.

Now disclaimer to this all: this is simply the crude way I make these types of gifs without access to Photoshop or whatever Adobe programs the pros use. It’s really just a time waster in my opinion and takes an hour or two… or more… to complete correctly and perfectly. However, if you have the time and energy, then I highly recommend trying it! :D I honestly hoped this answered your question, Anon. If not, just hmu in private messaging. o3o
