It’s a quiet night. Rare, nowadays, and all the more precious for it. Seungcheol has showered off the last bits of persistent product in his hair and the smell of the airport. Now, finally, he’s one with the bed and in your arms.

No premium threadcount from any hotel could compare to the bliss of being at home. With his home.

The comforter rustles as you snuggle yourself closer, throwing a leg around him for good measure. Without thinking, his hands find home on your waist, pulling you closer to him. You’re running your hands through his hair, the pads of your fingers gentle as they card through the strands. He faintly registers your chin grazing his scalp. His nose nudges the soft, fleshy space between your collarbones.

“While you were away, I dreamt of the stars.” Your murmur breaks the silence.

“You did? Was it a good dream?”

You hum thoughtfully. “Mm. Yes. Your outfit reminded me of the night sky. Couldn’t even tell you were nervous.”

He thinks back to that day—the innumerable camera flashes, the creative work as early as from the hotel room itself. Faces of celebrities and stars he never thought he’d see in person, all dolled up and decked out in their finest efforts to match the theme of the gala. The persona he channeled, and the number of times he said variations of This is Hugo Boss! to every Who are you wearing?.

“Your hair too, it reminds me of the stars,” you whisper, still playing with his hair. Seungcheol, despite himself, grins against your skin.

“Most people just say grey.” Trust that you’d find the poetic even in something that, admittedly, felt a bit understated—if not boring—to him at first.

“Shh, let me compliment you.” Your voice is only half-stern as you tug at his hair in reprimand. He just chuckles happily, enjoying the familiar feeling of you pulling at it.

“Careful, baby.” Both of you know it’s not a night for that kind of fun—you’re both too exhausted—but Seungcheol nips your throat teasingly nonetheless.

“Anyway,” you continue pointedly, though your voice has gone a touch breathier, “you’ve already read through me spamming your phone, but I don’t care. You should hear how proud of you I am. How happy everyone is that you’re shining not just as the leader of your group, but as yourself.” He’s thankful for the darkness of the room hiding the way his earn burn at the sincerity in your voice as you continue with your barrage of praise. Stubbornly, he nuzzles against your neck, avoiding your coaxing to meet your eyes.

“Cheol.” He looks up, and your hands shift from playing with his hair to squishing his cheeks together. From here, the city lights streaming through the window is just enough to bathe your face in a soft glow. The soft affection in your eyes overwhelms him, and he can’t help but twist his neck just that little bit further, capturing your lips in a kiss. 

Seungcheol relishes in the familiar way you melt against him. Even the way you smile against his lips feels like a miracle.

It’s hard to believe he has this, sometimes. Years of steadfast devotion. Being, inexplicably, blessed with a partner who could be so patient and supportive throughout the pains of being an idol—including and especially the days he had been deeply afraid that things would not work out. Having love embrace him in all its beautiful, graceful warmth, even as he was cursed to be unable to proclaim it for everyone to hear.

Overwhelmed again, he returns to hiding into the crook of your neck, staying there even as he feels your chest vibrate with a soft laugh.

“You’re so good to me.” He whispers it into your skin. 

In response, your lips press against the top of his head.

“And I’ll be even better tomorrow. Like you always are to me.”

I really don’t agree with the view of the Marauders as an unequal or imbalanced friendship. Shipping and anti-shipping aside, I think that’s a major oversimplification, exaggeration, and unfair to all four characters.

Yes, James & Sirius were undoubtedly the closest to each other. They were a double act, they were inseparable, they had two-way mirrors + matching t-shirts + identical fluid movements, they trusted and adored each other beyond all others. That is perfectly okay. You know who else had a similar dynamic, and who James & Sirius were explicitly compared to? Fred & George Weasley. They were twins and did everything together, but that didn’t stop them from being good friends with Lee Jordan, nor did it stop them from being a sibling-duo within the wider Weasley family. I have never seen anyone deride those dynamics as imbalanced, and certainly not “toxic”, so why are people suddenly obsessed with referring to James & Sirius in such a way? It is very common and very normal for friend groups to have a pair who are the closest to each other, that doesn’t change the fact that the group itself is close-knit. There’s a reason Sirius put up a photograph of ALL FOUR FRIENDS in his bedroom rather than just him and James.

I also don’t understand the fanon emphasis on Remus and Peter supposedly feeling “excluded” from the group and jealous that James & Sirius were so close when canon goes out of its way to emphasize the exact opposite. It’s made clear that Remus and Peter felt happily included in the group:

“To Sirius’s right stood Pettigrew, more than a head shorter, plump and watery-eyed, flushed with pleasure at his inclusion in this coolest of gangs, with the much-admired rebels that James and Sirius had been. On James’s left was Lupin, even then a little shabby looking, but he had the same air of delighted surprise at finding himself liked and included.”

The very foundation of the Marauders is one of inclusion. The whole point of Remus’s backstory is that he found acceptance and comfort with his “three great friends”, that they broke the law and became animagi just so that they could keep him company during full moons, that his otherwise-painful transformations became the happiest times of his life specifically because of their actions to the point. Even when after Remus's death, he looked happy to be back in the Forbidden Forest because it reminded him of their adolescent wanderings together. I don’t understand how people can twist and rewrite this dynamic into one of exclusion and imbalance. What on earth is the point?

I get that fanon often experiments with group dynamics to make them more complex and angsty, which are then automatically viewed as "more realistic" (they're not). But I don’t think the Marauders make sense unless their friendship (rather than its assumed drawbacks – and at any rate, all friendships inevitably have problems, they don’t diminish the characters’ closeness) is given centre stage, because that’s what primarily drives their story. The reason James, Sirius and Peter became animagi is because they loved Remus and wanted to keep him company. They were a little patronizing to Peter, but they looked after him and would have died for him, which is exactly what makes his betrayal so shocking and tragic.

Honestly, the way I’ve seen people call the Marauders “toxic” and “dysfunctional”, it’s like they've forgotten how messy the Golden Trio were and how much they fought with each other in canon, and have instead softened and overlooked all their bad or complicated moments. Paradoxically, they accept the worst possible interpretations of all four Marauders (especially Sirius) to make their claims believable. It doesn't seem fair or logical to me - quite the opposite.

I also think the idea of the Marauders being imbalanced partly stems from perception of James being the central and most-liked friend who kept the group together … even though that is 100% fanon and has no explicit basis in the text (one of the very first things we’re told about the Marauders is that James and Sirius were both ringleaders). It makes no sense to use that perception of James as the base-point of a canon compliant analysis, because it is simply your personal interpretation of canon that others can interpret very differently.

He plans cute dates every day and takes pictures—one day they cook together, another day they walk their dog, organize the house, or go shopping.

Then he ends the book with a photo of him proposing 🥹

We made it to the 100 swords scene. At first I could tell she really thought they wouldn’t stab XL. Oh mom :(

She still kept making a sad noise every time Juan appeared.

At one point the book goes “if they stabbed him 100 times what would be left of him?” And my mom through her worriedness goes “ground beef” MOM NO

During the stabs she was in absolute shock. Like she had to stop knitting and kept saying ���oh my god this can’t be happening” and “oh poor Xie Lian oh no”

She also began sniffling a bit :( mom was going through it

She was just feeling SO bad for our poor little XieXie like she couldn’t believe it. Through the aftermath she kept repeating “no how could this happen, poor thing”

Then was shocked at Feng Xin leaving. We haven’t had a full talk about him yet but I’m curious to know what she thinks.

She was also mad when FX punched him (bc he didn’t know what XL went though obviously but mom was on full XieXie protector mode she was traumatized 😭).

She was also like “please tell me they later realize what happened”. I had to tell her no and explained some fanfictions write it and she immediately went “we’re reading fanfictions when we’re finished” lmao. Maybe I’ll write one for her it was moms first hurt no comfort experience pftttt SHE NEEDS THE COMFORT

Then the parents part. She felt so much for the mom, and was like “oh that’s why he names the food 🥹”

She thought they had left. When I read they hung themselves mom once again had to stop knitting to look at me in shock and kept sniffling. She sniffled for a while. She kept saying how bad she felt for XL.

Was S H O C K E D when he finally became the white clothed calamity but she thought it was justified.

She was like “oh he’s sending them all to hell huh”

Still felt super bad tho. And was like AAAAA at Juan being Wuming. Plus once again cried at the flower being stomped (and went oh my god! When I told her XieXie chocked Wuming in the revised edition)

Every time BWX appeared now she went “oh this asshole again go to hell fuck you” she was so mad and angry for XieXie :(

When he mentioned stabbing him again she also went “NO STOP HES TRAUMATIZED” and made a little sad noise

Like poor mom was going THROUGH IT we read the saddest chapters today

We left it at that cuz I was falling asleep and couldn’t read anymore pFT but when we took a break to get some food and drink tea she was anxious as heeeeell, she kept grabbing my dog and going “oh no Isha what’s going to happen” or “nooo poor XieXie” and my favorite (all said in a cute pet voice btw) “oh he’s going to kill them all! I think fanon could be whatever you want, but like, if you just make an entirely new guy or replace who they are then what’s the point yk?

And as a Cass/Steph fan I’ve come to despise fanon sometimes for how they’re treated (Erasing Cass’s disability to give her a NEW one- execpt now she, the Asian woman, can’t speak. Treating Steph like she’s just the happy go lucky Waffles girl). That being said fanon is transformative and there are some real gems.

Actually a lot of Duke/Cass/Damian fanon has a lot of unchecked racial bias. Duke turning into the ‘only sane one’ and always following and being guided by the white characters. Cass being completely silent (erasing her canon disability in the process??? This is like if you made Daredevil deaf instead of blind for ‘inclusivity’ to me), losing her ‘Gruff and bad at emotions with a heart of gold’ swag, being treated as a therapy dog for the boys. Damian being treated as a borderline feral animal, taking away all his kid interests??? Like that isn’t really racist??? (Honorable mention for misogyny, Steph always treated like Tim’s abusive Ex like he wasn’t equally horrible to her, or sidelined. And Babs, THE Babs, sidelined.)

Of course I doubt any of these people are doing it on purpose, but y’know, unconscious bias.

Fanon is fun, but like, you see the source material first usually? This fanon is full of people who’ve never even read a comic (not saying saying OP- and the batfanon to comic reader pipeline is actually how I started reading last year! So no shade!) so they’re building on their own barley reconisable goncheroved story.

That’s not saying bat-fanon is only bad, I think keeping Babs as Oracle is a great example of something good done!

Anyway I have no quarrel with fanon, but like, bat fanon in particular is one ‘they would not say that’ post after the other, clogging the posts of fans who really want to engage and see THEM. Like in other fandoms we have fanon, but generally you can go into their tag and their fanon will at least be based off canon. It just gets annoying- especially as a Cass fan, it’s hard to look for Cass fics without getting dealt 100 points of psychic damage.

OKAY so recent post went viral in a not so great way which is fun- but now im curious because I was strongly of the opinon that canon is a sandbox to enjoy and then do with as one pleases

Especially for DC which has rewound and rewoven so many times canon is a whole multiverse of possibilities depending on which writers you like/accept

Thanks for the response and the immense level of detail! It isn't easy to design games in the first place, let alone release them. Seeing y'all's advice is great, and it also points to a few points I myself overlooked and am 100% going to have to include in the panel.

Social Media

Social Media, as much as it sometimes can be difficult, is indeed one of the best ways to get a game out there. I think going in depth onit is also enough of something for its own hour panel, but not including it would really be an oversight on my part for those who want to sell what they make, or have others see it.

Paywalling and Cost of Games

The insight on not paywalling is something I already included too, but I just want to double down on what you said here. Indie TTRPGs don't really have the luxury of being high cost most of the time, and certainly don't have the luxury of being required payment to have. At least digitally. IF indie TTRPGs are going to expand, they need to be accessible in cost and trust folks to pay if they can when they can.

Starting small and the size of games

While the smallest section, I am also happy you included actual figures on size. It's hard to tell people "make something small" because I often see the response to that being a one page ttrpg. Which themselves are effectively Game Design Challenges. They are NOT easy, and require lots of work to still communicate ideas well (which even then, rely on assumptions). Many new ttrpg designers (myself included, unfortunately) want to make our Big Thing, and that isn't usually feasible. While I am all for Make It If You Must, you should still TRY to make something smaller if you can.

Designing with Intent/Play and Read TTRPGs (and not just copying or spiting media)

A lot of my panel is going to be "Do what I say, not what I did" and this one is... very true. Painfully true, really. To add though, I want to point out that rules matter, and that means every rule added should be in service of a main design goal or mantra. From the small addendums to the massive backbones of the system like what dice should be used.

For Shattered Neon, the big gripe I'm going to be discussing and my cardinal mistake was this. I'd say about 70% of Shattered Neon is built for the purpose of making a tactical cyberpunk-fantasy TTRPG. The other 30% has been there... well, largely because of my initial goal of "Make Shadowrun, but actually playable and fun to learn". That could be a goal, but in reality it is simply a comparison. It also showcases how, while I like the genre and had a lot of movies and shows at my back, I didn't read enough TTRPGs early on in the genre to really make educated choices. Something more obtainable that would make a good end result would be something like "Make a horror ttrpg that explains the trans experience in governmental work" (my next project) or "Make a party game about a solarpunk library after the bombs fell" or whatever. The big point however is none of those are tied to one system or inspirational media. They have legs to stand on and whole genres to pull from. They also have clear and executable "fantasies" to create. But that is a whole other addendum.

Playtesting and Feedback

Feedback is important, playtesting is important. That much is obvious and I already included it (as well as the many ways to playtest things and get playtesters) but I hadn't thought of making the point you made. Feedback isn't always useful, and it isn't always something that should be listened to. Don't just kowtow to playtesters and fans. Look into what you can use for your art first and foremost.

If any of y'all had tips for aspiring TTRPG creators, what would they be? I'm hosting a "How to Make your own TTRPG" panel at a con this weekend, and anything to show folks from a fellow indie studio would be great!

Yeah a bunch. Each one of these could basically be its own post, but here are the condensed versions.

Social Media

You need social media. No one will ever hear of your game without a strong social media presence. And as much as it sucks, your best bet is probably tumblr. It’s the only populated social media site that allows your posts to be widely circulated without you having to pay, and also long form enough to actually include information. I dedicate one day a week entirely to social media and that’s just about the only reason we make any money at all.

Also, when using tumblr, the first five tags you put on a post are the most important, those are the tags that make it show up on people’s dashboards. The first twenty tags are the ones that make it show up in search results. Don’t put the name of your game in the first five tags generally, because if no one has heard of it yet, no one is following those tags.

Don’t Paywall Your Game

You deserve to be paid for your work if you indeed did any work at all (we’ll get to that), but that just isn’t the world we live in. Unless you have an advertising budget to essentially trick people into buying a game that might end up being crap, you need something to prove that your game is worth spending money on. Without an advertising budget, that proof has to be your game. Setting your game to pay-what-you-want, or providing “community copies,” lets people try your game before they buy. Plenty of people will buy up-front when given the option, and others who can’t afford it at that moment will download it for free then come back and pay later. Some people will never pay, but what that means for you is that they either never experience your game, or they pirate it. People experiencing your game, showing it to their friends, and talking about it is one of the most valuable pieces of advertisement you can ever have. It will ultimately lead to more people who are willing and able to pay learning about your game.

Start Small but Not Too Small

Do not make a one-page game for your first game. Do not be like us and make a 700-page game for your first game. Try to aim for something between 20 and 200 pages, especially if you’re one person or a small team.

Play and Read a lot of RPGs or Your Game Will Suck

Would you watch a movie by a director who had only ever watched one movie? Would you read a book by an author who had only ever read one book? Hell no, those would suck.

Read many rpg rulebooks, from many different genres and decades, play as many of them as you can (by the rules) to understand how the rules work and why they’re there. This will give you the creative tools you need to make something that isn’t just a weaker version of the last RPG you played. No, listening to "actual plays" does not count.

Most actual plays stray significantly from presenting a regular gameplay experience in favor of an experience that is entertaining for an audience. If you want to learn martial arts, you should be watching martial arts tournaments, not WWE.

If you want an actual play podcast that has my “actually mostly presents a real gameplay experience” approval, try Tiny Table.

If you say you don’t have time to read rulebooks, then you don’t have time to design a good game. Studying is part of the process of creating. If you don't, you won't even know about gleeblor.

This will let you know whether your "innovation" is more like "Cars don't need to run on gasoline!" or "Cars don't need crumple zones and airbags!"

The Rules Matter, So Design with Intent

The rules matter the rules fucking matter holy shit what you actually write down on the page matters I can’t believe this is actually the seemingly most needed piece of advice on this list. The. rules. matter.

Design your game to be played in the way you designed it. The rules affect the tone and genre of your game, they affect the type of people PCs can be and the kind of stories that will result from gameplay. Bonuses encourage PC behaviors, penalties discourage PC behaviors.

Do not fall for the trap of “oh well people will just play it their own way based on vibes anyway so it doesn’t matter what I write the rules to be.” Write that you wrote this game to be played by the rules and that significant changes to the rules mean that players are no-longer playing the game you made. Write like you deserve for your art to be acknowledged by its audience. If you don’t, then there is no point in anyone playing the game you made, because if the person who wrote it doesn’t even care what the rules say, why should anyone? The people whose “playing” of TTRPGs consists of never opening the rulebook and improving based on “vibes” will still do that no matter what, but the people who would have actually tried to engage with your game will find that it sucks if you don’t even care what the rules are yourself.

Playtest

You need to playtest your game if you want it to work as intended. You need multiple sets of eyes on it. If you don’t have the opportunity personally to do so, just release your game anyway with the acknowledgement that it’s unfinished. Call it an alpha or a beta version, and ask for people that do play it to give feedback, then update and fix the game based on that feedback.

Ignore Feedback

Most people do not have any game design credibility, perhaps least of all TTRPG players. You do not, in fact, have to listen to everything people say about your game. Once you ask for feedback, people will come to you with the most deranged, asinine, bad-faith “feedback” you can imagine, and then get really mad at you when you don’t fall to your knees and kiss their feet about it. You do not need to take this feedback at face value, instead you need to learn to read between the lines and find out which parts of the rules text are being misinterpreted by players, and which incorrect assumptions players are making about your game. Then, you update and improve the game by clearing those up. Only like 30% of “feedback” you receive will actually be a directly helpful suggestion in its own right at face value.

You can’t please everyone, and shouldn’t, so appeal to the people who actually like your game for being what it is, not the people who don’t.

Read Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy

Yeah this one sounds self-serving but hear me out. Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is as much a treatise on TTRPG game design as it is a game itself. When it presents mechanics and rules, it tells you what they are, why they are, how they are, and what you’re intended to do with them. This makes it an excellent example to read for anyone wanting to get serious about game design and learn how TTRPGs tick under the hood, and an excellent example of a TTRPG that expects players to play it the way it was written to be played, and why that is a good thing. At this point I don't think Teruki's parents are exceptionally horrible individuals (long-term psychological consequences still happen in cases in which the abuse isn't considered particularly severe + everyone is capable of harm, even "good" people), but they weren't the best, without a doubt.

Okay, they got too busy with their jobs and had to move overseas to progress on their career. External circunstances. Things that happen. They left their son behind, but that could always be justified by hectic schedules of ever-moving businesspeople. How else could he have a stable routine to focus on his future? They're just busy. Teruki hasn't seen them in long but that's not their fault, right?

They cared for Teruki, didn't they? His parents made sure that there was someone home to watch him whenever they were far away. It was inevitable that there would be times he would be with himself, though. But that's not bad! It only became a problem once those strange espers tried to take hold of him on the street. And even then, they were so weak he could barely give them the title of a psychic. It wasn't an issue that it happened more and more and there was no one to intervene. Or that Teruki had to torture descriptions of "Claw organization" and "brainwashed soldiers" out of these grownups to know what they wanted with him. His parents couldn't know. Why should they know? Better put: what could they do?

What could a normal person do against someone with psychic powers?

It was Teruki's choice to live by himself. He could manage it all. Contrary to the other kids, he was an independent and responsible young man who could be trusted with a house and money. Such a great boy. His parents were so proud to have someone as competent as him as a son, one which wouldn't mean hard work for them. One who always had the best grades and was the soccer team's best player and was the best student on the town's best middle school.

Of course they would suddenly allow Teruki to live on his own. Any parent with a child like him would, wouldn't they? Anyone on their right mind and who knew the slightlest about him would be sure he could do it.

And even if this "Claw" organization scared him a bit and he felt a bit lonely at times, it wasn't an issue. Issue would mean it was an obstacle - which it wasn't, as Teruki did perfectly on his own. His parents believed on so. That's why he had his own apartment at 12 on the first place. Teruki was so wonderful at this. It wasn't horrible if they didn't answer his calls, because they were so busy and he wasn't a little kid who depends on his mommy. None of this was their fault. He shouldn't bother them or himself over this.

Because they cared, right? On the end, it was only a pile of tragic circunstances and coincidences no normal person could act against. It was part of life as someone special like him. He couldn't expect that his parents could change any of this, and this made his loneliness the best possible choice. It was obvious that they would support such a decision.
