seeing europeans talk abt how americans need to respect the culture + customs of the [european] countries they go to, like yeah, thats a good take, only for them to turn around and essentially just say that american customs (they dont like) are stupid and shouldnt be followed bc america doesnt actually have any culture
#🍯 talks#its so annoying how they expect others to fit in in their country#yet its also fine for them to not do the same here?#and this one tiktoker talking abt how to an american smthg like 'im irish' has an implied -american added on#and her comments are full fo europeans being like 'well um im not american and i disagree'#and 'why would we know that' and shes like 'then its not for or abt u bc americans know what it means'#like yall have to be daft on purpose#my nationality is american bc i was born and raised here#my ethnicity is western european bc thats where my family is frm#my race is white#so ppl in places where their familys been in the same area for generations can have their ethnicity + nationality be the same#ie europeans#and then some of them are literally agreeing w her#and then the ones that act like theyre just askikg innocent questions when its been explained time and time again#and yet they STILL dont get it and continue to argue#which makes the 'innocent' questions not so innocent anymore

2024 reads / storygraph
Chosen. Again.
fantasy adventure
a woman who was a teenage chosen one in a portal fantasy world is suddenly brought back there when she’s 30
the friend she helped put on the throne is cursed asleep, and her friend who’s now the royal wizard is running things - though she’s not sure she can trust him. the evil king they defeated is living in the dungeon, but might be finding a way to escape…
she has to go on an adventure to try break the curse, and work through how she & the people she knew have changed
ace MC
#chosen. again.#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#this is….okay! I have no real feelings about it.#kinda generic (ie european) fantasy tropes - which is obviously the point; but I didn’t feel like it subverted enough to be interesting for#felt a bit like it was plotted to have various things happen and then just. they happened? yaknow?#it’s an interesting concept with coming back as an adult and exploring what’s changed but I just feel like not enough was done with it#the MC is ace which is why I read it. decent. she has a crush/past crushes but I wouldn’t say any romance goes anywhere#I do love a sentient sword. would have liked more of that though.

my plan in life is to marry a wasian man and then our genes will combine so that we will have one completely white looking baby who we will name Beomseok and a completely asian looking baby who we will name Bradleigh. love is beautiful
#wasian genetics are so interesting... i have a very korean face structure... IE round but somehow still sharp jawline and cheekbones#and heavily hooded (sometimes monolid depends on the day) eyes... that are deep-set like a white person and a#very european nose but somehow my nose bridge is actually low like an asian person's. fascinating

Deleting an entire rant on racist double think and the long oft-ignored history of white european cannibalism and the deranged hypocrisy of using cannibalism as a valid legal excuse to make slaves of other people especially in the Indies while practicing truly wild and bizarre amounts of cannibalism in Europe and the whole long sordid history of corpse medicine that we've politely disavowed and tried to forget because while it IS an interest of mine and I DO think it's vitally important to really face and square with these aspects of our history it doesn't need to be tagged onto someone else's post that's already being disrespected in the notes.
ANYWAY read 'Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires' by Richard Sugg for a real hard look at western european cannibal culture and how racist double think of assigning people the role of 'human but not human Enough' made it all possible
#zip it#Also to delve into the cannibalism of other cultures because there are several ways to approach it and justify it to the self#But most of the focus is on corpse medicine ie the primary means by which Europeans directly cannibalized themselves and the Other#it also as a whole helped me really understand the backend mental processes of dehumanization more than any psych textbook ever did

Watching these guys kick a football* around in the late afternoon sun in the Park and it’s amazing. They contort in unbelievable ways, cocking back their lean muscly bodies and firing the ball back in the air to the next guy. Bronzed, glistening torsos. That’s what life is about! I’m gonna start playing soccer!

re: that last quote, i feel like there is this predominant take that the boleyn downfall was inevitable in one guise or another, always, due to anne's unpopularity specifically, which i feel like underrates...that her unpopularity, as it were (at least, outside of court) seems to have...for lack of a better word...plateaued? by that year.
#im sure it reached a spike in the aftermath of fisher and more's and the carthusians' executions#and yet at the same time her progress with henry that year was considered very successful; and has been so by historians as well#coa had died and so her adherents focused their efforts on promoting the interests of her daughter#and the legitimacy of more questionable marriages had been grudgingly accepted in similar circumstances; historically ; before this#(ie; yes there would always be some that would assert theirs was illegitimate because it took place when coa was alive#but they had what many canonists and lawyers would have considered a common law marriage by that point for years#and coa was no longer. so.#retroactive legitimacy is kind of a thing; again depending on who judges it ; of course#but the reason henry's annulment was not granted in the final judgement#was that he had lived with her for so long as to 'deprive himself of the right to protest against it'#ie lived on the assumption of the soundness of that dispensation for long#and he had been granted a similar dispensation to marry anne (of course; only to be applied in the case of either coa's death or the#annulment of that marriage)#(one that elizabeth would ask for a copy of later...btw)#he had not been living with her as his wife for nearly as long; of course#but diplomacy and the need for allies meant that conceivably some european powers were likely going to be willing to either...#airbrush out those technicalities or ignore them#of course he would not have had an actual marriage ceremony with anne which would've been what the papacy would require ; in 1536#because that would suggest elizabeth's illegitimacy and that he'd been an adulterer for three years and that wasn't his belief#but it is all very...things that make you go hmmm

I'm from Asia, and the overwhelming majority of us would straight-up not date white people. Some ethnicities are more likely to date out than others, but overall we're good, no thanks. Women who do date white foreigners tend to be levelling up economically (no judgement there from me) which is a well-known fact. While there is definitely white colonialist beauty standards at play in the majority of places, I have lots of experience with the corners that bs hasn't reached (Nepal, for a generally big example, where they love dark skin and certain features) - and even within the spaces where European-centric standards do apply, the majority of non-white people aren't interested in dating actual white people as a first choice. It has nothing to do with white people's racism or disinterest in non-white people lol. I don't know about the Middle East of course, but I think your experiences of Asia seem limited to the more English-speaking, cosmopolitan areas perhaps - or maybe you are talking about Japan, which I am not familiar with personally. However even in Korea I have a white friend (born there) who can't get a boyfriend because- in her words- men there sort foreigners as "fun times only" and local women as "marriage material". It's a bit ridiculous to think that billions of non-white people are genuinely thirsting over white people, it's simple not true - most people prefer to date within their race. Lots of people do feel attraction to white people, for the reasons you outlined or naturally as well, but your experience does not seem univeral (outside the Western sphere). It was kind of bizarre at first to come across this thinking in Western spaces but now it's just deeply agitating, because I notice non-white people in Western countries really do act like they're less attractive and it's insane to me. Like sorry, but here in my part of the world, certain Asian features on women are considered the height of beauty among these communities (to the point where that's problematic in and of itself). Definitely white beauty standards have wormed their way here too, but again, it didn't change most Asians' sexual preferences - it just made them look for those features in their own (not everyone, but most - yes some people would date white).
interesting… my experience has been the exact opposite. while i know some people would not marry a white person, they’re still the standard of beauty and marrying a white person can be almost a status symbol & people do act like dating them means you’ve won somehow. this applies for the middle east and i know similar standards exist in south & east & southeast asia. my gf explained the same type of phenomena exists in taiwan and neighbouring east asian countries & ive observed similar mindsets around white ppl being considered the most beautiful among south asians and west asians overall.
i’m not referring to english-speaking cosmopolitan areas either, i’m thinking of countries like the philippines and india and pakistan and basically the entirety of the middle east. admittedly i’m not familiar with nepal tho— it’s interesting to hear they prefer dark skin there, which is in contrast to the rest of asia in which colourism is very prominent.
i did notice white people are generalised as more of a “fun time” thing in many cases but people will still not look down on you for marrying a white person & shun you for it the way they would for marrying a black person, for example. the people generally think white people are the most appealing but often prioritise marrying people of similar backgrounds for the sake of cultural and familial standards.. not bc white people are deemed unattractive in asia. in fact, the whiter you are, the more beautiful you are deemed.
#felt like parts of what u wrote seemed quite dismissive of my experience#and made it seem like bahrain is an english cosmopolitan place#anyways it seems like ur using marriage as the standard when i’m talking about beauty standards#features like pale skin larger eyes double eyelids long noses long faces light/coloured eyes and blonde hair etc are deemed more beautiful#ie features associated with europeans. this is the case for asia in general#people will prefer more white-passing ppl within our countries bc it’s the closest u can get to white ppl without upsetting ur family#a lot of the time at least. but what do i know 😭 i only grew up being berated by people from different parts of asia for being visibly brown

Facebook group post P1: what did people feed quail before purina was a thing? P2: they didn't! quail are wild animals and they didn't keep them Me: did anyone inform 11th Century China they weren't supposed to keep and breed quail? Or 12th Century Japan, who bred and competed them as song birds with benefits. What about the ancient Egyptians... and not sure what bird they were eating the Bible - better double check that quail are kosher. Also those pesky Victorians, can't keep their paws off keeping and breeding every single animal known to man.
#ffs just because quail weren't commonly kept outside of japan and china until the mid-19ths century#doesn't mean no one else was keeping them#like not to be that person but coturnix coturnix is literally called PHAROAH quail and JAPANESE quail#honestly I suspect europeans weren't keeping them because they had pigeons which are more or less quail that fly LOL#or quail are pigeons that don't fly#anyway they fill the same niche along with bantam chickens#which were more popular in the new world than either pigeons or quail#until cities started systemically banning them#after the world war 2? I believe it was 2#I suspect the reason quail are becoming popular in the US right now is people are trying to skirt those restrictions#because they're realizing they want some control over their food supply#its like domestic rats#people don't seem to realize rats were kept in Japan before the Victorians started breeding them as pets/novelties#very few common place animals of today weren't kept in the past by various cultures#there are several species of domestic finch that come from SE Asia and straight up don't exist in the wild#see also mule canaries ie. hybrids between canaries and goldfinches

Sweetheart are you sitting down
Tired: finding a sealed tomb from Egypt or some other non white culture and declaring it cursed
Wired: doing the same for the catholics
#Catholics very very very much do magic And curses#the reason Catholic dead stuff isn’t considered cursed but Egyptian dead stuff is has to do with racism#and while yes anyone from any culture or race can be Catholic#Catholicism itself was born in and remains predominantly a European thing specifically#you got a lot of bias going on here that you might benefit from examining and reflecting on#there’s no reason for non white cultures dead to be considered cursed but white European Catholic dead to be sacred#and magic and curses is something your defining based on your personal experience but the reality is#people from other cultures very much look at catholic practices and consider it to be one hundred percent related to magic and witchcraft#it’s a racial prejudice referred to as mysticism#meaning what non white cultures do is morally bad but when I do it’s perfectly fine#ie Catholic dead is sacred but Egyptian dead is cursed#you have to understand that other people could say the exact same thing about Catholicism that you’re saying about Egyptian culture because#cultures are going to define magic and cursing and what counts as religion versus culture versus occult very differently from you

"I know JK Rowing is a terrible person but her books are so good-"
You sure about that?
I mean, just for a start, have you taken a good look at her fantasy creatures lately? A whole bunch of them are straight-up based on malicious and dehumanizing stereotypes about actual people.
Remember the werewolves? And being a werewolf was made into a kind of metaphor for having AIDS?
And you know how AIDS was first associated with gay men? And how conservatives back in the day were claiming gay men were preying on children in order to convert them to gayness?
Remember how Fenrir Greyback preyed on children in particular? Yeah, she put that subtext in there. She was an adult in the 90's. She knew damn well what she was doing.
Remember the house elves? Remember how most of them loved to serve and needed to have a home and a master or else they just wouldn't know what to do with themselves?
Did you know that's literally what slavers in the American South said about the Black people they kept enslaved? Go look up the happy slave myth.
Do I even need to get into the goblins and the antisemitic tropes they're based on? No, folkloric goblins were not gold-hoarding bankers waiting for their chance to stab humanity in the back.
"But the characters are so good!"
Are you kidding me?
Most of her characters are pretty one-dimensional, including Harry. Her idea of making a morally complicated character is giving a tragic past to a bully. Numerous characters are little more than stereotypes. (Looking at Fleur right now.) Literally anybody, including you, can easily make dozens of characters just as good, if not better. (It doesn't exactly take a lot of character designing skill to go, "hey, actually, having a sad backstory doesn't make it okay to bully children" or "hey, maybe I should not base a character on the first stereotype that pops into my head.")
"But the rest of the worldbuilding!"
Sorry, but her worldbuilding is just as basic as her characters. Magical castles and secret passages are stock tropes. Magical people who keep their true nature secret from humanity is the premise of pretty much every White Wolf TTRPG. Most of her fantasy creatures are just common European fairy tale and folklore creatures with shitty stereotypes projected onto them.
I'm not saying "basic worldbuilding bad." I'm saying, you could do just as good, if not better, with minimal effort.
Also there's her magical bioessentialism, where only Harry's abusive blood relatives could provide him with supernatural protection from Voldemort. Rowling thus effectively declared that non-biological family isn't quite real family, and that abusive biofamily can give you some essential thing that a loving, supportive family that isn't related to you just can't.
The Hogwarts houses are one of the most insidious elements of her worldbuilding. The idea of being sorted gives you a little dopamine hit because wow now you have a li'l niche where you belong!
But the actual function of the houses and sorting system and the House Cup is teaching children to see each other as rivals, and ensure that the most toxic views of the upper class get passed on to every new batch of kids sorted into Slytherin.
Hogwarts effectively prepares children for a dystopia where magic serves to distract its citizens from how nightmarishly awful it is. Economic inequality is so bad that people like Arthur and Molly Weasley can barely afford to put their kids through school, casual sadism is just an accepted norm in everyday society, and non-humans are second class citizens. Rowling sorta acts like she thinks this is a bad thing with certain lines she gave to Dumbledore, but in the end, her special boy protagonist becomes an auror; IE, a defender of the status quo. So.
If you've never seen it, Lily Simpson's video goes into even more detail on how the worldbuilding of Harry Potter is actually incredibly fucked up, and how it betrays small-minded attitudes on Rowling's part. There's no separating the art from this artist, because Rowling's rotten values pour out of nearly every page.
youtube
Yes, there are many things in Harry Potter that evoke feelings and inspire people, but there's absolutely nothing in it that this series has a monopoly on. You can find those same experiences in much, much better media.
