Maybe it's the eternally distrustful loveless child in me but idk something about the way DC has been writing familial relationships in recent years rings so false to me. There's no room for the complex, nuanced, unnamed relationships Batman and Nightwing used to have, nothing like the warped mother-daughter-sister thing Barbara Gordon and Cass Cain had, nothing like Superboy's weird obsessive hero worship/bone-deep dread of his clone fathers or Max Mercury's weary undefined protectiveness of Bart or Wonder Woman's dogged loyalty to her little "sisters". Cause — for me, at least, I know I actively seek little moments of connection in stories; when I write or when I read it is to seek comfort. I think that's why DC has made this shift. Readers like me gravitated to those little warm moments, and DC noticed that we did without stopping to think about why.
But there's a point at which I notice diminishing returns of comfort from fluffy writing — it ceases to register as real. It's too good, too saccharine, too empty of any of the pain and frustration it takes to express genuine love for the other person. It's all hand-holding and no sweaty palms. It's so easy for someone to say they love you. It's so easy to see when it's all just words. And part of this is, yeah, bad writing; all that stuff about show not tell. They're trying to tell us these characters care about each other without giving us any real proof. but. idk. I need my love to be real. I need to feel the bones behind each embrace. I can't accept affection without struggling my way into it. Honestly I'd rather get a grim gritty Batman who forgets he HAS kids until they throw themselves into the line of fire than a milquetoast helicopter Batdad who tells his kids exactly what they mean to him without actively being in a state of bleeding out.
#idk don't listen to me i haven't read any comics closely since they killed alfred#but what i see in screenshots makes me. incredibly dissatisfied#maybe love is all about the striving!!!! maybe it's about the blood under your nails as you claw your way back to your beloved!!!!!#maybe it's hugging your dad and all you can think about is how stiff and unwieldy it is around the body armor and utility belts#y'know#and i DO enjoy wayne family adventures. it can be nice. but yeah i can tell that i would not endure it if that was all i had to read#dc#oli rambles

asks from the slaughterhouse #5
A FUNKY QUESTION WHICH DC CHARACTERS WOULD THE LI interests be 😭 🙏🏻 def not askig for stuff i do v as batman (this is meme coded), idk if i should see angel was harley a friend suggested but EH IDK Misaki was batgirl according to them ronin was joker but a little moral with him def idk its their opinions but i need something 😭 🙏🏻
v - batman or red hood!
angel - personality-wise i don't think she's very harley; she'd be more apt as black canary, catwoman, or poison ivy (re: femme fatale)
misaki - i can kinda see it but it depends on the batgirl - stephanie brown!batgirl for misaki would be super adorable and makes sense imo :pleas: other than that cass cain batgirl or barbara gordon batgirl wouldn't make much sense
ronin - joker would check out! red hood as well (slightly "tamer" ronin, also crowbar lol) or even batman who laughs if we want to have some fun with it ^^
(you know you want to join the slaughterhouse, losers ;))

Idk how to do this but
I need a Reverserobins!au right now
I need like eight year old Damian to have the door for the Wayne manor opened by a young adult Bruce, who's doing even worse than when the canon Damian met him. I need him surviving and growing up as an only child, getting so much attention from him father and Alfred, taking on the mantle of Demonbat (or somrthing of your choice!) and slowly learning the consequences of his actions, knowing how he hurt people, and learning how a family loves, learning how he does not have to fight for his own place.
I need Batman and Demonbat, finding an alone and scared teenager Stephanie, one who ran away from her parents after finding out the truth about her father. Damian finding empathy in the girl that was made to fight, Bruce finding sympathy in the scared, lost child, and now, we have Batgirl.
Batgirl, who is legally missing as Stephanie Brown, but chose to carry on the mantle Barbara Gordon left for her when becoming Oracle. Batgirl, who fought for what was right, Stephanie, who bonded with her brother regularly, enjoying his blunt personality.
Batgirl, who dies by the hands of the Joker.
The Waynes, who mourn the death of a daughter, the loss of a sister. Not differently from the death of the canon Jason Todd, Batman and Demonbat become more violent, Damian especially, feeling the impact of a real, permanent death, a life the pit couldn't bring back.
I need young Tim Drake, who was never that interested in superheroes, was very obssessed with a new circus coming to town, The Flying Graysons, even learning a few moves and becoming quite acrobatic.
I need a Tim Drake, watching Batman and Demonbat barely holding themselves back from murdering the man who kidnapped him for money, Demonbat almost decapitating the villain when he asked about Batgirl.
Tim, who was impressed by their skills, and innocently asked to be trained by the pair.
Bruce, who refuses in immediacy, but has to deal with a young teen bothering him every night at patrol, wondering how the kid could always know where he was... Realizing the brightness of the kid.
Damian, who despite his grievances of his beloved baby sister, still decided to accept the young boy into his life, seeing part himself in the kid with an imperfect homelife, desperately begging for attention, but not knowing how to ask for it.
Tim Drake, who becomes Batboy in admiration to his predescessor, and hides it from his parents. Batboy, who may not be the strongest, but is very bright and agile, and would give his life for the others.
Damian, who was once wary to let Tim join them, quickly cares for him as one of his family members. Damian, who see as much light in him as he saw in Steph, Tim, who he loves so much despite not being as great as showing it as the other.
Bruce, who took so much longer to truly accept him, but slowly realized that he isn't just "the one to replace Batgirl", but a kid of his own, one who survived a not-so-amazing household but still shines so bright.
Tim Drake, who meets a boy his age when fighting a small mob in Crime Alley and befriends him, or tries to.
Jason Todd, who lives on the streets, struggling to get anything to eat, and is not ecstatic to befriend a random vigilante that appeared next to his street.
Jason Todd, who after many visits from this Timothy, finally understands why he even bothers to come around.
Jason Todd, who finds a friend in the rich kid he keeps meeting on weekday.
Jason Todd, who after so many conversations, finally accepts Tim's request to hang out, and realizes what life could feel like. The warmth on Timothy's hug. The approval of Bruce's glare. The soft words on Damian's speech when he tells him he can stay anytime if he wants.
Jason Todd, who had nothing, but now has a family.
Jason, who quickly found out about their now not-so secret identities, who accepts but asks to join, becoming Batboy alongside his best friend, now brother.
After all of that, when the family is doing... Slightly better... Damian, a supportive older brother that moved out a little recently, but still visits frequently, Tim, recently being truly taken in once his father had passed, his mother already having fallen long before, still a little shocked but accepting of the support, Jason, who is doing the best out of everyone, living his best life as a rich kid, and Bruce, loving in his own way, all still slightly grieving Stephanie Brown.
Well.
There she was.
In the Wayne manor, they met a young adult Steph, with white tips on her hair. She was not as angry as the canon Red Hood was, but still affected by the pit in a way, her eyes than usual, of course.
Stephanie Brown, who had come back to life and on a mission to convince Talia Al Ghul's son to come back to the league. Well, she knew that would never happen...
Spoiler, as she called herself now, who was slightly more violent than before her early death, that now wanted to knock a certain clown's teeth off.
Spoiler, who had been hugged tightly by Damian Wayne, who missed her dearly, an embrace that was rarely given, but there it was.
All of them were a family again.
A family... Goes out together, right?
Dick Grayson, who had been following the footsteps of his parents, circus veterans that still partook in it.
Dick Grayson, who could do quadruple flips on command, could not be ready to his parent's early demise.
Dick Grayson, who had to hold himself back from lunging at the incompetent officers that refused to listen to him, but was held back by a tall figure.
Batman, who had empathized with the child, and decided to take him in.
Robin, who had a mountain of cool older brothers and sisters to look up to, all of which that love them.
I can expand of this if anyone shows interest, theres more id loove to talk about, especially stuff involving Duke and Cass...

any thoughts on batman: black mirror? i really enjoyed it (as a non-batfamily fan) but i'm wondering if there is a difference of opinion with people who are actually acquainted with the context behind black mirror, i guess. which parts did you find the strongest + which parts did you find the weakest?
anyways, im a huge fan of your comics-posting (which is both, in the best way, entertaining and insightful). have a great day!
Ahhh thank u!! I'm glad I'm not the only one having fun 😁!!!
Thank you so much for sending this, I loved the dick!bats era and I liked The Black Mirror!!
I thought it was a decent Dick story, and I loved that it had Babs and Tim as the supporting cast. It was good to see them back(mostly) in their 90s early 2000s element.
I thought that the A plot was better than the serial killer B plot-; it had a lot of personal connection for Dick without being about the Graysons and orcas(which are some of the most vicious and borderline cruel predators that terrify me to my core and it was really cool to see them get some use)- even if I didn't find the ending super satisfying.
I thought James was interesting, and his story was more linear but the addition of the Joker into the situation was kind of just...messy and not entirely necessary? It kind of killed it for me. Idk I might just have Joker fatigue. I did like the coloring and a good portion of the art better in that part of the story, tho. I thought the mood they set was really cool and a little scary.
My high points were all (unsurprisingly) character based:
I loved the way Tim saving Dick from his own shit here
Kinda paralleled this scene in NW 96
But more mature. Watching them go from Dick mentoring Tim to them having a much more balanced relationship where Tim can fully have Dick's back has always been super satisfying and seeing it making a come back after their little fallout was cool
I also like the attention paid to the differences in Bruce and Dick's philosophy (specifically here:
) and the difficulty that Batman presents Dick because of it. Part of the appeal of Dick being Batman is the reluctance and the chunk of flesh it takes out of him and I think this story really got the tone of that right. He's making mistakes that he wouldn't normally, he's not sleeping; you can really tell that everything is getting to him. He feels like the walls are closing in on him with no way out (sometimes literally) and it makes the whole story kind of..weary? It's as much man vs man as it is man vs self. Love that many of the action sequences in the book happen in enclosed places that have an unstoppable deadly force converging on him with no way out and how that emphasizes the theme
OH and my absolute favorite analogy for the mindset that dick operates w/ is in this book
And how that works with his parents rules for survival
There's like... a debate on whether Dick plans or if he acts on instinct and I like the way that this breaks it down to: yes, he's planning from the start and if it seems like he isn't it's because that's what he wants you to think- but he understands that leaving space to bob and weave is a part of that process. Ultimate planner that is liable to start behaving erratically as fuck at any moment is such a fun look
Favorite fight was probably the horror forward snap at the auction, with honorarable mentions going to Dick v.s the compactor, Dick v.s. the orca, and of course Dick v.s. The bends
Worst was by far this one:
There is no way he should've been able to waltz into Babs' hideout without her knowing I'm so sorry it's just not realistic, like, that's Barbara Gordon???
#dick grayson#barbara gordon#tim drake#asks#bitch I might wing#sorry this is so long I suffer from overly verbose disease and it is terminal

FANON batfam things to (dis)like
To like:
Tim Drake taking photos at night - you know what I'm talking about.
Lazarus Pit's influence as some intrusive thoughts.
Jason Todd being literature nerd.
Not mentioning Cassandra Cain's second "adventure" with Lady Shiva, because I love Cass and I'm happy for all the stories it didn't happen.
Not destroying Clocktower.
White streak in Jason Todd's hair (I know, I know, it was in some comics too, but I consider it as fanon thing because— the ones who read comics would probably understand (I hope) what I mean).
Cassandra getting her name even without Barbara Gordon naming her.
Bruce accepting Tim Drake as a son almost immediately.
To dislike:
Bruce accepting Tim Drake as a son almost immediately.
Cassandra Cain having no personality outside of her weird body-reading thing/outside of her being Batfam therapist (which is— just WHY???? She's the worst option for this! I love her but she can't be perfect and she has SO. MANY. PROBLEMS. She deserves better than being that!) Guys she will beat all the criminals up if it means she doesn't have to talk about feelings and all that. Besides, knowing the person's intentions or guessing emotions doesn't mean knowing how to talk through it or how to handle these emotions or how relationships between people 'should' or 'should not' work.
Assuming that she understands everything people say before she learns how to speak.
Not mentioning her problems with reading&writing and thinking she would learn ASL immediately (and MAYBE she would, in some stories, IDK, but I saw only one fic that actually discussed why ASL would be as difficult for her as other languages)
Fucking... autopsy scar. it should not exist.
"Replacement". It's a good thing, actually, I just don't like it.
Shiny Dick. (KDJDISKSOXBXJSKOSSLSS I LAUGHED AFTER I WROTE IT I WON'T CHANGE IT)
Jason slitting Tim's throat at the Titans Tower. I know it would be kinda poetic after THE BATARANG ™ but - no. I remember Jason/Clayface thing with Hush and I accept this canon but all I see at the Titans Tower fight is beating. I'm not even sure Jason wrote the note in blood, because guys, have you ever tried to write big letters with BLOOD? I DID. It's so fcking inconvenient. and takes too much time! and oh my god, even if Jason DID write it in Tim's blood, why slitting his throat? do you have any idea how ridiculously difficult the whole thing is? I think people just kinda confuse Tim-Jason situation at the Titans Tower and Tim-Jason situation with Hush. Because. Slitting throat thing. And they often forget about that Jason/Clayface thing with Hush. I forget it too, sometimes.
Lazarus Pit Madness as a form of mind control or something that excuses everything Jason did. And turning him to a different character.
Impulsive Jason Todd who has no control at all. like with the white streak - I mark it as a Fanon thing despite it being in comics. not because previous reasons but because. because retcon. fuck off. I mean, as Robin he could be, sometimes. But all Robins were like that sometimes. And they all still were professionals. Well. Can vigilantes be professional????? I don't think so but who knows.
Shiny Dick [2]. I won't apologise. (wow I just found out that apologise and apologize are both correct, just British and American variants. Cool!!)
Duke Thomas having half-existence. - would it hurt to actually choose if Duke exists in your story or not? he's an amazing character and it's better not to write him at all if he's a ghost here, my guy.
Weird Tim who worships Jason while getting beat up by him. Did you see how Tim's all sassy while fighting? NOT a deer with big eyes at all. ROBIN. He's Robin!
Not acknowledging what Damian al Ghul or Damian Wayne has been through. I get it, you like Tim and Damian's acting hostile makes you hostile towards him but— seriously?
Woobifying any character while completely changing personality. Dick, Tim and Jason are suffering the most from it. Damian is there sometimes too.
"Jason doesn't try to kill Bruce anymore". He never tried to kill Bruce except this one time in Lost Days where he decided not to do it after all.
Not acknowledging Jason Todd being a hypocrite.
guys do you remember Jason's dead eyes in Lost Days. literally the last glimpse of life in him was when he found out that Joker was alive. It's sad.
___
okay there's a lot more than that but I just can't remember anything else right now. And I'm not going to touch all the fandom's opinions on Bruce Wayne as a parent because it's even more meaningless.
___
sorry for bad English.

It's me again from the overexcited ramble from earlier BUT I'M NOT DONE
Bart knowing about Gar before others feels so real because he's spent his childhood surrounded by people who felt like Gar does right now, and maybe Gar (not to mention Bart himself) felt like that in the future as well. I wonder how well Bart knew BB in his own time, if he ever really knew him at all, and if it has impact on their current friendship
Oh to see the effects of Bart's childhood on his behaviour in the present, you've sprinkled bits and pieces, and I'm taking it all in like a starving man
And the Thawne DNA confirmed!! GOD it was so good, the love he has for his mom and the despise he has for his grandfather (not Barry obviously) is perfection, I hope Thad got what he deserved when Bart got out
And FINALLY the recognition he deserves with his intelligence, like you said: he knows his stuff. So happy to finally read a fic which shows that Bart is GOOD at what he does, he built a time machine for heaven's sake!
BUT ALSO TYE WAS SUCH A LEGEND LMFAO I love the friendship (or more like feigned frenemyship?) he has with Bart, their dynamic in your fic is hilarious
Okay that was all, thank you for reading this rollercoaster
Your work is absolutely incredible and I can't wait to see where the story/stories are going from here
love the energy 😍 sdfghjkl
yeah i like to think that as soon as gar came back from Mars bart took one look at gar and was like damn he’s going to be going through it
i just imagine mental illness would be extremely prevalent in bart’s original era, i think it’s by-product of a post-apocalyptic society that makes too much sense. And with no system in place to treat it as normal, well bart must have seen some pretty intense stuff
honestly i really don’t know (or have an idea lol) of how well bart new gar in his TL, in my opinion he didn’t know him personally at all. I’m usually in the camp that most of the team had died in one way or another in bart’s time. The ones that i usually do think he knew or knew of “in person” some what at the very least are Barbara Gordon, Wally West (this is a maybe), Lian and maybe that’s about it. It varies with either more members or less, hoe stay i’m unsure, but these r the ones that i typically think of. With how coy bart was when he first came to the past and spoke to gar, honestly anything is possible though lol
i just usually don’t think that the original members were as involved i. his childhoos as some fics make them out to be, one of the biggest reason is because i think the ones who were alive, dispersed to different locations to take part in rebelling etc so it would make it hard for him to know many personally, he might have heard of and gotten details, but beside that it’s really up in the air. The only HC i sometimes think of /include is Barbara Gordon being the one to teach him how to read/write etc education stuff when he was really young and the tornado twins were still alive (so before he was 5), but other than that, idk
“Thawne DNA confirmed” sdfghjkl LOVE THIS, yeah u heard it here first folks, it’s confirmed 😁 jk lol yeah it makes me super happy to include it in AAIT i feel like it really fleshes out his backstory on time related things and i just love all things related to him and his mom and his thawne side, it’s just very satisfying to think about so being able to explore that and HCs in my fic, very fun. I have such a specific vision for Thads involvement in Barts and (ofc as a result) Melonis lives and there will be a little more on that in future chapters, so stay tuned 🤩
PREACH omg the only thing that’s left for us is to see the day his wiki page is updated on it !! capability and intelligence to me is such a key bart feature idk if this make any sense but it just is lol i’d update the wiki myself if i could try to understand the editing process i just don’t have the energy to go thru reading all the rules or figuring it out to do it rn
tye + bart friendship is everything to me i just feel like they’d be rlly entertaining together just so much potential lol
thank u so much for sharing ur thoughts and kind words with me i appreciate it so much <33 and again thank u for reading AAIT, i really appreciate it 🧡

My Beef With Barbara Gordon
I'll start off by saying this isn't any hate post to the character, merely an analysis because although she's never really stood out to me, i believe she's an interesting character and I'd like to share my point of view and if possible hear others' takes on her too
the basics, babs is the daughter of commissioner gordon and the first batgirl, later taking on the mantle of oracle (usually because of the killing joke thing, which I'll address later on)
usually the reason i don't get along with most representations of babs is because she's mostly written to be "the girl bat" instead of "the bat girl". I've only seen some clips from btas but i can mostly tell that's the case. it's a smurfette syndrome classic. i apologize if I'm getting the wrong idea out of it, though, as i said, I didn't watch the series.
when she's not written as such, she can be a good character. i love her version of the harley quinn show, i think it fits what I'd usually expect out of batgirl//oracle, a computer nerd who wants to help people and might be a little impulsive, but means well. though there's not much media of her where she's like that.
and although she's not exactly like that in the lego batman movie, i think that version is also pretty good (not when she's introduced, i think she gets better when she shows bruce that she's batgirl and yk, badass and such). not a computer nerd and also a bit older, but i think she's pretty neat.
I'll admit the fact she gets with bruce in the timmverse (specifically in the timmverse) pisses me off... age gap things are not my thing and it feels like grooming, i believe that's why it's not a very popular ship for either but the fact it's official in at least one dc media makes me sweat (cough cough and they say superbat is a stretch cough cough /j)
like i just mentioned with the lego batman movie, i have no problem with it when they're about the same age or, idk, at least he doesn't meet her as a teen or whatever. I'm not crazy for finding this weird, right?
and there's the fact she dated dick on the timmverse as well, which makes me even MORE uncomfortable. if it was me dating my father's previous lover, for example, I'd probably take that as a weird thing. dick is already traumatized enough, thank you very much.
and also she's bruce's friend's daughter? that's not so weird, i myself have friends who are way older or way younger, but it be creepy af to see one of them dating someone my age, specially if it was someone close to me, I'd be very concerned and it'd take a while for me to get used to it.
but yeah, if it's an au or multiverse shenanigans, it can be alright.
and then comes the killing joke thing... honestly, I don't know what to do out of it. I'm a new dc fan, I've been for nearly six months now, and I can't really decide how to feel about it.
on one hand, oracle is badass and shows that it doesn't take superpowers or immense dexterity or inhuman strength to be a hero. i respect her a lot, and when she's written well like in wfa, i appreciate her character as is.
but the killing joke itself... it doesn't make much out of barbara, and focuses more on her father and personally i think that sucks. i know it must hurt for a dad to see his daughter paralyzed, but joker using it as a means to make him snap doesn't seem, idk, very jokery. even with the picture things, i think babs in that situation is used more as a plot device than as a character and it makes me uncomfortable idk.
and then they made her able to walk again...? honestly that's where i lost it. there are too many versions of batgirl//oracle in my head already and that just made me more confused??
so the reason I don't like her as much is because she lacks consistency, every time I'm reading about her i gotta guess which version is it and every single piece feels more like au fanfiction of itself. like, okay, i do enjoy those, but if I'm seeking something official it's hard to understand where it's at.
but i still love her with every cell in my body when she's written like the true sarcastic girlboss that she is <3

Michael Mitch is a bat family oc (find some stuff if you want to know on @erroritserror )
Rover is @ezzyraccoon 's. Idk why I made this-
Rover: "so how many bat-family is there?"
Micheal: "a lot. But I can name everyone for you"
Rover: "....ok..."
Micheal: "there is Alfred. He is the butler, the first to know who batman was and is the best cook you will ever meet."
Rover: "Terrance would be friends with him..."
Michael: "then there is Bruce Wayne. He is a rich billionaire that adopted me and my siblings. He is in public a rich play boy but at night he is a crime fighting vigilante. He didn't plan to have any kids but here we are. Anyways Bruce is a good guy....most of the time-"
Rover: "what do you me-"
Micheal: "THEN there is Dick Grayson! Raised in a circus, first robin, saw his parents die infront of him. Sad stuff. But kind and funny goof, probably the most traumatizing past not including me! He is now Nightwing and a big loving older brother!"
Rover "...well damn-..."
Micheal: "first batgirl aka Barbara Gordon was the daughter of a cop and she is in a wheelchair because joker broke into her house and shot her. So yeah- acts like a big sister to us. Bruce basically adopted her."
Micheal: "then Jason Todd. 2nd robin now a anti hero that is a huge foodie, me and tim are cool with him. His mom was a doctor that sold drugs and his dad was a small criminal that left to get the milk. Jason was also beaten by a crowbar to death by joker"
Rover: "do you all have trauma from clowns and circuses?"
Micheal: "yeah pretty much-"
Micheal: "Tim Drake was the 3nd robin, now red Robin...Yumm, he is smartest of us, lived a good ish childhood, his parents died- he is also is coffee addict and very sleep deprived. Don't ask the last time he slept!"
Rover: "should Bruce be-"
Micheal: "we all are sleep deprived Rov. Anyways there is Steph brown. Tim's ex, was the first female robin. Was second batgirl, smart gal, her dad tried to kill her many many many times, faked her death before, all that."
Rover: "im- do all of yo not have parents or have crappy parents?"
Micheal: "yep!"
Michael: "Cassandra Cain, 3nd batgirl, now is orphan (I think-) was trained without language so she doesn't talk much, she can read movements to tell what you are gonna do next. Doesnt understand everything but is badass!
Rover: "...wow-...im kind- wait is that all of the family?"
Micheal: "not even close. Anyway now their is Damian Wayne. The 4th robin, obsessed with animals, the only vegan, filled with rage pretty much, trained by the league of assassins. Mother is one of the leaders, Bruce's only biological child. And kinda a snappy kid but fun to hang with at times"
Rover: "sounds like tea and Elizabeth"
Micheal: "im not gonna ask who they are! Anyways Duke! Called The Signal, the first mutant in the family I think, the only bat person that has a good sleep schedule mostly because he works on the day. But very sweet and cheerful dude, also his mom is insane because of joker and he is trying to get her to at least remember who he is"
Rover: "their goes the joker trauma-... Holy shit your family is hu- wait what about bat woman?"
Micheal: "oh yeah she isn't important-"
Rover: "batwing?"
Micheal: "oh! He is another batman. Alfrican soldier that is another version of batman but he has a different kids suit, he is retired now but he i think had the most teched used suit then all of us"
Rover: "your family is huge, is there more?"
Micheal "yeah. Oh there is a lot!"
Rover: "cute..."
Correct me on any mistakes I made. I want to make sure I did all that right
Also the reason why I didn't do batwoman is because I dont know much about her-
This took me so fucking long-

Hmm I was thinking about something and it has to do with Bruce and Barbara and Jason and that whole little circle of what they see or feel about Bruce and to me it’s complicated because I guess I do see them at looking up to Bruce and then of course that changes for two different reasons. Like Barbara bitterness towards Bruce at the beginning comes from what was written in the Killing Joke and then of course there is whatever is written later between Jason and Bruce but like for me it’s hard to like.. like I love that Bruce who was these things that Talia saw in him but then like how do get that writing with this other type of writing without like diminishing the agency of those characters as well. Like I’m saying this as someone who loves Barbara Gordon but who also equally loves Bruce and sees how Bruce is written to be this type of character when Barbara and others are involved. And even so I can blame so many things oh like Jason’s death and then what happened to Barbara playing an impact on so much of who Bruce later becomes but even there like Jason and Barbara would feel that loss of that Bruce and probably would be tied in some way to that and what happened to them. Idk I feel like I had better thoughts about this the other day but I just remembered I had wanted to send you an ask about it because like there is something there. Like I love the issue when Barbara was Batgirl and she wants to quit and Bruce tells her she shouldn’t and later he says something about a pawn turning into a queen or like when Barbara is speaking to Superman and tells him that Bruce isn’t as dark and everybody makes him out to be. And like there is something deeper there too with Jason and Barbara and Bruce and that little circle. Like I don’t think I ever seen anybody ever talk about what Jason and Barbara would respond to each other towards their view of Bruce.
i cannot remember if this is an old ask that got buried or a newer one so if it's the former i am so so sorry for not getting to it sooner but YES.. it's very interesting how everyone talks about jason's death (and barbara's paralysis by extension) being the big game changer for bruce's personality despite the fact that it's allowed modern writers to sort of retroactively make it to where bruce has always been this way rather there being an acknowledgement that bruce changed and lost a part of himself that was there prior. like in the morrison era esp it's hammered in repeatedly that bruce is neurotic and obsessive to the point of harmful alienation of his own child but the contentions with bruce's reaction to jason and barbara are so isolated from the actual main storylines that there's this.. disconnect? and i don't think we ever get enough of an acknowledgement that the way bruce acts now is in part a result of fears exacerbated by what happened with barbara and jason. that was more a feature of 90s bruce's development and what i think made the grant era of comics so compelling bc (for whatever character assassination jason underwent along the way) there was a constant emphasis on bruce's decline as a result of that trauma and sense of failure and with knightfall esp (and later the rucka arcs) always an inkling of hope that bruce could come back to who he used to be if he tried to process his trauma properly and unburden himself from working selfishly
but yeah in addition to that there really is so much lack of perspective from characters who know what bruce used to be like before everything changed and besides dick and talia who else could be more crucial to that? obv it would fall to jason and barbara and doubly so with their particular traumas, so the fact that writers have never tried to connect them to each other and to bruce in that manner is incredibly puzzling. i honestly think barbara just got really unlucky bc by the time jason came back into comics her prominence had began to decline so we missed out on that sweet spot in time where barbara and bruce's close friendship was more highlighted and might have played a bigger part in jason's return had it been timed earlier than it actually was. like barbara was the only person other than alfred that bruce had left after jason died! dick was gone and had his own life, talia was in a period where she barely came into contact with bruce and they were already strained bc of what happened with damian, bruce's relationship with gordon was steadily deteriorating, etc. even before jason died barbara was the one still operating in gotham alongside the two of them like she was there she knew bruce's face before it all crumbled to pieces she was literally his best friend in the 90s so why that all of faded over the years is so.. so.. likejtglkdfhgdf god it's incredibly frustrating
#outbox#jason being excluded from the bruce and barbara narrative of the 90s#versus barbara being excluded from the bruce and jason narrative of the 00s#terrible. bleak. depressing. antithesis of capitalization

Hello there :) may I please have a DC matchup?
At first, I come across as aloof, calm, and socially awkward. I'm very to-the-point, and can sense BS very quickly. I never get involved in drama, but I might make a witty joke while I sit in my little corner and watch with popcorn. I've been told I'm very observant and I've been called an old soul. But when you get to know me, I can be a bit of a gremlin😆.
I have a huge imagination and I'm always daydreaming. I'm creative and I love storytelling. Especially theatre and writing. Once I start writing, I find it hard to stop (as you can see here😂). I'm a film geek who likes psychological horror movies (Hitchcock films, The Shining, Carrie, etc). But I also love Scooby Doo. Another thing I like is archery and being outdoors.
I'm also a complete basketcase and 24/7 stressed. I try to look on the bright side of things when I can, though, and consider my life to be an adventure. I know my problems will be a fun story to tell at parties someday.
One thing I despise is people being condescending, and talking down to me. I'm neurodiverse and I look younger than I am, so I've had my fair share of that. I also hate when conversations get needlessly intellectual and philosophical. Like, if I ask: "What's 1+1?" And someone tells me: "Well...what IS the number one, really? Numbers are just symbols on paper. "
I'm like: "...right, but what's 1+1?" Me wanna know HOW math. Me not wanna know WHY math. Oh, and speaking of math, I hate math.
I also hate watching people argue, because, often, I'll understand both sides, and have an existential crisis over who's right, and who's wrong. Like, if I pick a side, I could pick the WRONG side! What kind of witchcraft is this😱
Fun facts: I was born with weirdly shaped pinky fingers. They're both bent sideways. Apparently it's called "clinodactyli" or something, so that's cool. Also I have OCD, sensory issues and trichotillomania. My favorite movie is Gremlins. One time, I accidentally printed, like, 87 pictures of a cat because I was a dumb 7-year-old, and the entire computer room was flooding with cats. My mom was so mad😂. Also, I'm terrible at videogames. I tried to play World of Warcraft once, and spent over an hour trying to get out of the canyon I accidentally jumped into.
I'm a Genini-Cancer cusp, (technically Gemini) Libra rising. INFP (although, the second time I took a test I got INFJ so idk lol).
(Firstly i just wanted to tell you that 16p test is totally bs🙄. I took it and it kept saying that i was ENFP but my personality doesn’t match with that. So my advice is, just read each description of the personalities and pick the one who suits you the best. I found ESTP the closest to me!)
ANYWAYS
I match you with…
BARBRA GORDON!(Also known as Batgirl or Oracle)
She is a complex character with unique sets of traits. Like you, she is initially portrayed as someone far off, calm, and socially awkward, but she is pretty observant and possesses a sharp sense, making humorist jokes while watching from the sidelines.
Barbara is known for her incredible imagination and love for storytelling, this is noticeable in her role as Oracle. She shares your passion for theatre, writing, and creative business. Additionally, her interest in psychological horror movies could align with your film geek side!
As someone who despises disdain and dislikes overly philosophical discussions, Barbara's very straightforward and blunt personality would resonate with you. In my opinion she's a strong character, but she also has vulnerabilities and struggles with her own daily challenges, which could make her relatable to your basketcase tendencies.
Her experience with being neurodiverse and facing challenges due to her physical disability (she uses a wheelchair) adds depth to her character, much like your experiences with clinodactyli, OCD, sensory issues, and trichotillomania. (I don’t have disabilities so i hope I betrayed this right omg)
Overall, Barbara Gordon's multifaceted personality and ability to adapt to different situations makes her a great matchup for you!!!

Anyway, after you figure out that you like someone you got to figure out if they like you back. Now, you could, you know, just ask but it’s absolutely mortifying if they say no, so you can’t do that. You could always pass them a secret note because then they’ll never know that it was you who asked. Or, you could pass it down the telephone. Something like, “Tanya said, that Larry said, that Sarah said that so-and-so likes you” and hope that they have a positive reaction.
Or, you know, you could spend a decade mutually pining in silence. Which… does not work. You end up going your whole life without the person you love, and that’s just awful.
There are ways that relationships can be more complicated though. Specifically, if you crush’s uncle’s (who is also his legal guardian) grandson comes from the future and accidentally reveals that he’s your crush's son. Which means you don’t end up with him because you guys don’t have both sets of plumbing to be able to make a baby, so of course he can’t be yours.
Or well…. That’s what you think…
Or: What if Bart was Wally West's son who accidentally travelled from the future?

okay. let's re-establish our characters:
main bat-cast:
TIM DRAKE as BATMAN
STEPHANIE BROWN as ROBIN
BARBARA GORDON as ORACLE
CASSANDRA CAIN as HERSELF
DUKE THOMAS as THE SIGNAL
other people that are in Gotham:
JASON TODD as RED HOOD
ROSE WILSON as HERSELF? (possibly Ravager. uncertain)
KATE KANE as BATWOMAN
BERNARD DOWD as HIMSELF
DARCY THOMAS as SPARROW
characters who are Not In Gotham for at least part of the story but are still fairly important somewhere:
DAMIAN WAYNE as NIGHTWING
DICK GRAYSON as ???
HELENA BERTINELLI as HUNTRESS
BRUCE WAYNE as BATMAN
TEAM SECTION
NOT-SO-YOUNG JUSTICE (less a team and more a friend group):
CASSIE SANDSMARK as SANDSTORM
KON-EL as SUPERNOVA
BART ALLEN as IMPULSE
CISSIE KING-JONES as HERSELF
ANITA FITE as EMPRESS
GRETA and SLOBO may or may not be around too
THE BIRDS OF PREY:
as mentioned earlier, HELENA and BABS
DINAH LANCE as BLACK CANARY
um. I do not know the Birds of Prey well enough to say who might be on a team with these three approximately five years after the current state of canon. Steph and/or Cass would probably go here if not for Extenuating Circumstances. Would Rose be invited to the team, given that she’s on better terms with some of the other vigilantes? No clue.
OTHER CHARACTERS THAT SHOULD MAYBE, PROBABLY AT LEAST CAMEO:
Clark, Diana, other characters that are theoretically Bruce's friends and would be sad if he died
idk a few of the Gotham rogues. Scarecrow? Selina? Ivy? Harley? The Penguin? I'm not including the Joker I don't like him enough for that
OTHER CHARACTERS I CAN'T FIGURE OUT BUT WANT TO INCLUDE:
GHOSTMAKER
yeah that's it
some explanations under the cut
there are definitely more characters operating from Gotham. I brought up some in some of my earlier posts about this AU. I just don't think Batman matters enough to them to justify their inclusion (Xanthe) or I don't know enough about them to say accurately what they would be doing (Claire Clover).
I don't think Sandstorm is a terrible name for Cassie. Yes Bart plays Darude a lot. There are some regrets. It is still too cool to give up.
Supernova!Kon is just cool. There are already two Supermen. We can chill. Kon should get a new identity to himself.
Anita is back in the vigilante business because at this point the kids are...definitely old enough to be in school full-time. It is still pretty chaotic. Greta I know has made a recent ish appearance. Slobo is still stuck in comics limbo I think? But the whole squad is here. YJ is primarily there to be Tim’s friends, so their hero selves don't matter as much, but they (esp the other core 4 members) are who Tim calls for backup first outside the Bats because it simply would not occur to him to call Bruce's friends when he needs help. He has his own friends.
I really want Khoa to be in this because the personality clashes between him and Tim would be insane. Alas I can't find a way to fit him in. I don't think Batman Inc is sustainable especially with Khoa as the leader...Khoa is not a teamup guy. This is like. The basis of his personality clashes with Tim. But I think the future of Batman Inc should be that Khoa pisses off everyone on his team to the point where he's left alone.
#dc#au: gotham needs a batman#<- please. if you're confused as to what's going on. check out the rest of this tag

Whenever I hear some talk about really loving Barbara Gordon or her being their favorite Batgirl for nostalgia reasons I just know that there’s going to be something about the writing that ends up…just not right. And I am saying this as someone who has loved Barbara Gordon as Oracle but also appreciated her era as Batgirl, but doesn’t want to see her in that Batgirl role in comics or film ever again. Even in that era when she was introduced as Batgirl her personality wasn’t very…cutesy I guess? There is a certain era of Barbara’s period as Batgirl that does feel like this woman would later become the Oracle we end up knowing in comics. I feel like when she came into The Batman Animated series and later Batgirl: Year One she suddenly was written more cutesy and it has followed her ever since when writers write her as Batgirl or look to writing her as Batgirl or are fans of her as Batgirl and in turn it has affected the characters who have been in the role after her. Barbara’s tenure as Batgirl wasn’t very long (she wasn’t even the original) and her popularity died with the audience which is why she was so easy to discarded for them when they wanted to get rid of her. And I don’t feel like Batgirls is doing Barbara any favors in Batgirls either even if she is the one that the writers know more of. Because yeah these character (Cass, Steph, Babs) are getting introduced to a new audience but when it feels like you can just swap all their personalities with each other like it’s not good? It’s like loving a character but loving the most shallow aspect of them and focusing on the most shallow aspect of them. I remember the editor (who is currently also the editor of Nightwing) talking about how they wanted this book to be like Spider-Man into the Spider-verse but it feels like when you try to force something to be something else you aren’t being true to like what should come naturally. The same editor as said similar things about Nightwing and about it being a book they wanted to enjoy which is yeah… But Shadow of a Batgirl is a great example of writers writing with love and who weren’t forcing something to be like something else, and it actually came out great.
Yeah, I tend to focus on Cassandra Cain specifically, but I don't think Batgirls has written any of the characters well I just don't have as much knowledge for Steph and Babs to proclaim it every time. For me especially with Babs there's been a consistent want to keep her from progressing as a character. Her new progression went Batgirl ->Oracle->Batgirl and they saw no issue with it and many new fans came in during that time so when people were asking for Oracle proper and either Cass or Steph to take the reigns back as Batgirl it was met with heavy resistant from DC and fans. Hell I still see people calling Cass Orphan and Steph Spoiler. They'd rather nobody be Batgirl than it not be Babs.
Anyway, I'm aware of the editor. I didn't hear the Spider-Verse part, but I do know that she was a HUGE Burnside fan and basically wanted Batgirls to be for Cass and Steph what Burnside was for Babs, which IMO fucking sucks, but also based on the reaction they are succeeding.
Also it's weird to me cause Batgirls is clearly meant to be a book that's supposed to be for a casual/new audience, but it doesn't read well for a new audience cause for the first few issues you had to have read Fear State and they barely went into who these characters were, not even caring to actually *introduce* them and a quick summary of their origin or their journey to being a hero and Batgirls. So it only worked if you'd been following these characters for a long time. Idk it was weird to be told Batgirls is on "Best Comics of the year" list, but I think ppl assume cause I talk about how much I don't like it I'm part of some bigger group of people, but in actuality I'm in a small circle and Batgirls is somehow continuing to succeed despite no one involved seemingly caring about these characters.
And yeah Babs wasn't the first Batgirl and I remember ppl kept asking for Bette or even Tiffany or Kate to show up in the book and honestly, people after reading a few issues I think wanting them to poorly write more of the Bat women in this world just seems cruel.
READ SHADOW OF THE BATGIRL

...i've never been threatened like this before and i'm not sure how to feel about it but hey. here you go.
Premise: Tim gets adopted late AU where Bruce never took Tim on as Robin, and Dick didn’t come back from Blüdhaven. As a result, Bruce ended up killing idk a gangster or something, lost it, broke into Arkham to kill the Joker, and then retired. That got Dick to come back and reconcile with Bruce, and it made Jason’s return to Gotham go smoother, cause while he doesn’t understand why that caused Bruce to “lose,” the Joker is dead and he knows that the no-killing rule is vitally important to him.
The only problem is that Tim remains un-found familied. He continues running rooftops, collecting evidence and dropping it off at the GCPD or at the Batcave, who try their best to get him to stay home. Steph got mentored by Dick and Barbara, and later Jason a little bit. Then Cass came and got adopted by Bruce. She’s not a vigilante, but she comes out sometimes when her family needs help because she too has eldest daughter syndrome. So: Nightwing, Phoenix, and Spoiler patrolling the streets, Oracle on the cameras and Batgirl as backup.
Tim stalks Phoenix to confirm for himself that it’s Jason, returned from the dead. Unfortunately, a little big birdie told Jason to be on the lookout for a little stalker, so he finds Tim.
"Listen. I’m only gonna say this once. Go home. Next time I see you out I’m tattling to the ‘rents. Got it?”
Oh great, so Dick told Jason every embarrassing thing Tim did when he was thirteen. He must have been a special type of evil in his past life to have his most embarrassing teenage memories constantly thrown back in his face by his heroes. Heroes who now all despise him. Wonderful.
Janet dies. Jack ends up in a coma. Tim sends his mom texts he knows she’ll never answer. So nothing changed. Nothing has changed, so why can’t he stop crying? Tim buries his feelings by going out and videotaping idk something.
Nightwing stops by. “Hey, Tim. We, uh, heard about your parents.”
Oh, God. He’s trying to be sympathetic. Sure, he knows what it’s like to have your parents ripped from you, but not parents that never wanted you in the first place. Plus this doesn’t change the part where he despises Tim and is only trying to comfort him because it’s the nice and right thing to do.
Nightwing awkwardly tries to say that Bruce is willing to take him in, which strikes so many visceral emotions so quickly that Tim has no idea which one prompts him to say “No! God, no.”
Yeah, no. He’s not getting pity-adopted into the family of vigilantes who think he’s a creepy little stalker with no sense of boundaries and no respect for those grieving lost loved ones. Especially since they’re right.
“I already filed for emancipation.”
“Well, if you’re sure that’s what you want,” Dick says doubtfully. “But remember our door is always open.”
I bet you say that to all the half-orphaned kids of Gotham, Tim thinks spitefully. Well, not as spitefully as he would like. He knows Dick says that because he’s stalked him for years. It’s good that Dick can find the kindness to comfort even the kid he hates.
“Okay,” Tim lies.
Dick offers to take him home.
“Oh no, that’s okay, but thank you for offering,” Tim says politely. “I was just about to call an Uber.”
Damian asks who this Timothy character is. (Ah yes, the newest member of the Wayne bunch. His integration into the family is…going. It’s going). Dick gives a sanitized version of the story, and they end up trading stories about Tim.
“Remember when he hacked into Babs’ servers?" Steph recalls. "I’ve never seen her so embarrassed.”
“He used to drop information off with Gordon in person, dressed up in all black and doing his best imitation of Bruce’s growl. Called himself Shadow.”
“Wait, seriously? Tell me you have footage,” Jason begs.
“He even tried to copy Bruce’s disappearing trick,” Dick says between bouts of laughter. “Stopped when the Comish got too worried about this random kid who knew more about Gotham’s criminal underbelly than him. That’s when he hacked Babs’ servers.”
“He only stopped that when I threatened to tell his parents,” Babs cuts in, fondly exasperated. “And that’s after he tried to give me tips on how to encrypt files. And I only found his identity ‘cause I told Dick about an anonymous informant who referenced an alarming number of memes and he immediately guessed who it was.”
“Seems like that’s the only way to get him to stop,” Jason remarks.
“We could never get him off the streets, though.”
“Couldn’t stop me, either,” Steph points out cheerfully.
“Yeah, well, you were too annoying.”
Tim, about a mile away, takes off his headset with shaking hands. He has only himself to blame for overhearing all this. None of the Bats would've recommended stalking and placing hidden mics in their living room as an effective method of getting to know them. Yet his face is burning. Ears ringing. Annoying. Please. Tim is annoying. Spoiler is annoying like a little sibling. Tim annoys them the way a civilian not dangerous enough to be a Rogue but still engaging in criminal activity is annoying. Like the disposable goon of a Rogue, but without the violence. He bugged them because he is, as previously established, a creepy little stalker. He wanted to learn more about the newest edition to their family. Instead of hearing from Damian, he heard about himself instead from the mouths of his heroes. Heard too much. Learned that it’s so much worse than he thought. They don’t despise him because of a handful of crushingly embarrassing things he did when he was thirteen. According to them, he never stopped being a bother. All of it, the information tips, the hacking advice, was annoying to them. According to their own words.
[end of chapter one]
go away
After Bruce Wayne dies, it only takes Tim about three weeks to show up on Dick Grayson’s doorstep with a 3-ring binder full of evidence. He runs a finger along the top metal ring of the binder over and over as he waits for a response to the doorbell. All at once he feels thirteen years old again, clutching months of painstakingly collected notes written up neatly and sorted into sections. Dick never read any of it, yet Tim did it all again. Had his photos developed for ease of viewing access, included sources for all of his claims, stuck to his main points for clarity’s sake but has pages and pages of extra information in the back of the binder for when–if–Dick decides to give his idea a thorough look.
But Tim is seventeen years old now, old enough to know where he went wrong the first time. Yesterday he spent hours coming up with argument after argument, approach after approach, to get through to Dick. Mr. Grayson, I’m so sorry for your loss. He’s probably tired of hearing that. Mr. Grayson, I have something I think you’ll want to see. Too quick to the point. If he doesn’t recognize Tim, maybe he’ll try Mr. Grayson, I know about your night life and I want to help. If he does, then maybe Mr. Grayson, I want to say I’m sorry about last time, but this isn’t like last time, I swear–
The door opens. Tim knows that it’s Dick by the smell. Sweat, unwashed clothes, and misery. How like last time. Dick looks like the epitome of grief, which is to say, not like himself. Dick Grayson is a creature of happiness by nature, of high-flying freedom, of beloved family and friends, a picture-perfect cover boy, always adored, always with a beautiful redhead, Batgirl or Starfire or Arsenal, yes Tim knows his type, always kind, always charming, always happy to be there. But Tim only ever seems to know him in these liminal states of horrible tragedy.
Worst of all, Tim can’t quite tell if Dick recognizes him.
“Mr. Grayson,” he begins, heart pounding so loudly he cannot hear himself speak, “I don’t think Mr. Wayne is dead.”
For a moment longer than Tim’s entire lifespan, Dick just stares at him. Blue eyes hazy and unfocused. One hand on the doorframe, one hand dragging through the stubble growing on his half-shaved jaw. He’s wearing an AC/DC shirt. Given Dick’s fashion tastes (bright colors) and Bruce Wayne’s music tastes, neither of which Tim should know, he is 98% certain that the AC/DC shirt used to belong to Bruce Wayne.
When Dick finally speaks, his voice sounds like the death of all joy.
“How many family members do I have to lose before you let me grieve in peace?”
Tim’s pounding heartbeat becomes a deafening white noise as Dick’s question pangs around his chest. His eyes sting so fiercly that Tim knows it is as visible as Dick’s misery. Nevertheless, he persists, if only for Bruce Wayne. No one else will save him if not for Tim. So even though his hero thinks Tim is a creepy little stalker with the unbelievable audacity to swagger into Dick’s life and tell him how to fix it, well. He’s not wrong, is he? What does it matter if Tim once upon a time dreamed of more? Saving Bruce Wayne is far more important than Tim’s nonexistent chances of becoming friends with Nightwing.
“Jason came back.” Tim’s chin, lifted stubbornly, trembles.
Dick’s face clouds over with a rage so terrible that Tim sincerely believes he’s about to get punched by Nightwing. Which wouldn’t be so bad. Tim deserves it, doesn’t he? Intruding on a stranger’s grief like this is probably a punchable offense. He’ll bear it all if only Dick listens, but it looks like he managed to blow it in the span of two sentences.
In the end, though Dick’s hands curl into fists and his shoulders shake like traintracks, he turns his head at the last second and rests his forehead on the doorframe. Tears streak down his perfect jawline. Watching Dick Grayson cry is like watching Atlantis sink. It’s like watching the Mona Lisa go up in flames. Tim knows stuff like this is why Dick treats him like a celebrity-obsessed stalker living in a weird fantasy world where he’s a part of the Wayne family. He knows it’s why Dick hates him. Tim still can’t help that it’s captivating to watch.
“Go away,” Dick begs.
Tim has never felt more like the scum of the earth, yet still he’d persist if he thought there was a chance of getting Nightwing to listen to him. But there isn’t. So Tim, as lonely, rejected, unworthy and fucking correct as he is, sees himself out of the apartment building.
Two weeks later, he catches a flight to Lahore.
