favourite characters !

sirius black: has been my favourite marauders era character since i got into the fandom. mostly because i can relate to his family dynamics and also his relationship dynamics. my favourite headcanons for him is that he played a beater for quidditch, his favourite subjects were care of magical creatures and arithmancy, he is demisexual and gay, he braids a rat tail into his hair, first tattoo was a pair of antlers on his ankle (james has a complimentary dog paw on his ankle). he got it when he was 14 and the placement was so that his parents couldn't easily see it. he also loves mechanical engineering. has loads of muggle textbooks about car engines and bike engines because he's just fascinated by how they don't need magic to move.

barty crouch jr: again, i relate to his familial relationships. the way he thinks about his father portrayed by the fandom and also how he behaved in canon reflects A LOT about who i used to be (and who im trying not to be). i also really love his character because of how flexible he is. like, there are so many different variations of barty i love it. my favourite headcanons is that he is a ravenclaw, he is demiromantic and asexual (although i also love the freakazoid version of him dearly). i believe he regretted what he did to frank and alice and in a way, a stupidly fucked up way, him treating neville with all that kindness was him trying to make up for it (even if he didnt consciously admit it). i love how he's viewed as being really sensitive but also extremely headstrong and also how dearly he loves his friends. i just love how complicated he is. i haven't thought much about him as a student like i have with sirius, instead (sounding like a broken record here) i just love to see how he handles different dynamics with people

remus lupin: he's just as complex as every other character and while he appears to be a rule follower he definitely has an air of moral ambiguity that not a lot of people explore. just look at canon remus again and tell me that man isn't someone who has conflicting morals. to me, he's like a less confident version of light yagami if that makes sense. also...not as much of a misogynistic asshole. okay that's a lame analogy but i understand what im saying and if you don't toughies for you. and then there's also fanon remus (LOML) corduroys, scuffed doc martens, record players, old books, mars bars, gay panic, etc etc. you get the picture.

what are ur headcanons for buck and tommy's nuptials

I've said some of these before but:

Tommy does something small and intimate for the engagement. It's them at home, very sweet and very subdued. He spends weeks planning it with Maddie's help, recruits Eddie for the whole display he does (idk if it's flowers or some other craft, but there's definitely a display). Dozens of electric candles (because fire safety kids!). In my head, he uses the candles to spell out "marry me" (or some variation of that).

They talk about eloping, just getting it over with in a weekend, not because they aren't excited about it, but because they're not 20-year-old kids anymore. They just want to get on with the next phase (settling into marriage, whether that includes kids or just a bunch of dogs, building their house, making sure their advanced directives are in order), and being married is an important part of all of that. Still, their friends are not okay with this. Hen tells them how important her wedding was with her mom in attendance. Maddie reminds them that they can still do something small and intimate AND allow their family to celebrate them. Eddie, the consummate romantic, tells them that they can't skip the wedding because he wants all the romance without the commitment. Bobby and Athena tell them they'll support whatever they decide.

They have a short engagement, just like Bobby and Athena, and decide to get married in the backyard.

There's an argument over best men. First, they both want Eddie. Then, Chim intervenes and they both argue over him. Somehow, things really get switched up and Bobby ends up as Evan's best man while Tommy has Chim. Eddie gets to be the one that marries them. (Eddie might have lost his spot as best man for Evan because he misplaced the rings a few weeks before the wedding, but who's to say 👀)

When asked "who gives these two away", the entire 118 (and Maddie) says "we do". It's fucking emotional.

Jee-Yun is the flower girl and baby Buck (Connor's kid) is the ring bearer.

THE SPEECHES: Chimney definitely mentions Maurice. Bobby's makes everyone cry. Eddie manages to bring the mood back up by roasting both of them. Maddie also tries to give a speech, talking about how happy she is to see her brother so happy and settled, and how much she loves how Tommy has become a part of their forged family, but she can't get the words out.

HenRen find a moment in the midst of the reception to ask Tommy if his intentions are honorable again. He basically is like "look, I have cake. Can I enjoy my cake? You're literally at my wedding reception."

Phillip and Margaret are there, mostly out of a feeling of obligation to invite them, but Evan pays little mind to their attendance. It's the private speeches about love and marriage Athena and Bobby give him that night that mean more.

Evan went full Clipboard™ on the entire process, down to color coordination. Fall wedding, fall colors. (I'm imagining emerald green dress shirts under their tuxes - color scheme actually found here)

As always, Tommy thinks Clipboard Buck is hot, so he just lets him go wild on the whole thing.

Since the media’s portrayal of w*ndigo is a skeletal, bipedal, deer like creature… but that is apparently not at all what they look like… why not just give the deer thing it’s own name?

Especially since the deer thing’s “problem” is cannibalism, while a Wendi’s is, iirc, like… greed/gluttony?

Like come on… I know it’s a much more… interesting? Name than like “Bigfoot” “mothman” or “squonk” (or however you spell the name of that pitiful crying creature) but like… here’s our chance! Give it a decent, ORIGINAL, cryptid name. Bc from what I’ve heard, at least from some indigenous folk’s version of it (as I presume there’s the potential for variation?) the only thing the emaciated deer and their creature have in common is a name. A name that, again, from what some say, shouldn’t even be said? (Although few have said that also isn’t the true name of the creature but the equivalent of like… ‘boogeyman’ or ‘baba yaga’ but again I can’t exactly verify that nor do I feel like coming across it’s true name, if that isn’t it, is something I’d like to do)

Like… idfk pull out the Latin on this thing, devourer of flesh? Google translate (take me out back and shoot me if you must but I am monolingual and doing my best) “Edax Carnium.” Or even “of the flesh” (this deer thing comes from the devouring of human meat, leading to a hunger for human meat, eat to become… idk) is just “Carnis” 🤷‍♂️

Idk, I’m just spitballin ideas for if any of my info was right- that at this point all the two truly share is really the name, and if it would be okay TO rename the deer creature to separate it from indigenous culture’s being.

Hi, my mom just told me about how she wasn't taught Zapotec as a child because of anti-indigenous racism. She was born in San Juan Teitipac, I believe my grandmother and past relatives spoke Central Valley Zapotec. I'm not sure where to go from there to try and learn the language.

Note: a few words she remembers but not sure of spelling:

Muchito/mushito/muxito?- little boy

Wixa/wija/güixa/güiga? - field rat/large rodent they ate

Hi! Ooh, okay, I'm not sure how much help I can be because I only know a few words and phrases in the variation of the Zapotec language my family speaks.

I found out more about the Zapotec we speak from this paper. However, it focuses on the village my mother and her side of the family was born in and it's only in Spanish and I have only read a small part of it. If you can read Spanish this might help. For example, according to the paper:

The Zapotec spoken in Oaxaca is divided into four variants:

Zapotec of the Valley (Bene Lashe)

Southern Zapotec (Bene Chhaa Nhisdao)

Isthmus Zapotec (Bene Yeze’e)

Zapotec of the Sierra (Bene Ya’a)

From my understanding, San Juan Teitipac is in the Tlacolula District which has many variants of the Zapotec language. This would be the "valles centrales" (Central Valleys) shown here.

Furthernore, according to wikipedia:

San Tlacolula Valley Zapotec is a cluster of Zapotec languages spoken in the western Tlacolula Valley, which show varying degrees of mutual intelligibility. All varieties of Valley Zapotec are endangered. The languages in this group include:

Connecting to other indigenous Zapotec speakers may help you too in case they have other resources. I've seen a good amount of Zapotec people and other indigenous Mexicans on Tik Tok. I follow hundreds of people (majority of Mexican descent at @kurami_rocket) so, I'd have to go through all of them to find my fellow Zapotec people 😅 BUT you can simply search #zapotec on Tik Tok as recently as a week since they uploaded vids to find them and ask for help. And please don't be afraid to ask others for help like with me! Many of our fellow indigenous brothers and sisters would be more than happy to try and help!

I wish I could give more information, but I would need to try and do very in depth research to find pieces and clues that may help you.

It's definitley very hard and difficult reconnecting because of the colonialism and genocide our people suffered and continue to experience. Information online is vastly scarce and hard to come by. Especially learning indigenous languages online. Finding any and all resources truly is valuable.

If you haven't tried already, the best bet is always to ask your family members if you can. Especially older family members such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc as they may know a lot that they have never told you.

Hey so a bird came to me and whispered in my ear... it says I *really* want to know more about your magic headcanons! Strange coincidence isn't it?

No but for real, your worldbuilding ideas are always so thorough and well thought-through, I'd love to hear more!

I have not slept yet so this might not be readable idk. This is half developed from a rp angle and half from a "how do I make x ingame skill work in this system" angle, which is why I both talk about how ingame classes don't really apply but also quote specific skills. Enjoy your read.

Okay so cast spells you need three things: Aptitude, Association and A Focus. You can work with one of them missing but the other two have to work overtime to compensate.

Aptitude

Aptitude defines what kind of magic naturally comes easy for you. This is not always easy to determine, and it is not unusual to find one kind of magic you are decent at and never find out there's others that are even easier for you. Many cases of of people who "Just don't have a talent for magic" just never happened to try out the kind they would be good at. Maybe because they wanted to practice a specific kind of magic and found out they suck at it, maybe because their Aptitude lies in an area that is rarely practiced by their culture.

Aptitude lies on a spectrum, kind of like light but with several axes and doubling back on itself. See elementalists and necromancers both using ice, teleportation, etc.. The classes focus around one particular area of this spectrum but overlap in many areas and are thus mostly arbitrary distinctions (as proven by many of the elite specs mixing things up).

There is also some variation in how specific one's Aptitude is. Some people only have a very small range, while for others it might be a more gradual decrease.

Some examples from my characters: Aerana is a excellent air elementalist, she can wield air magic effortlessly enough that she regularly skips using a focus entirely (we will get to that part) however anything else, even just other elemental magic, requires significantly more effort and concentration for her. Ruck on the other hand is also in game terms an elementalist, but can easily work with all of the elements, and even occasionally dips into areas more closely associated with mesmer and thieves. (again those assosiations are no hard borders)

Foci and Association Chains

Having a natural predisposition only brings you so far. What really distinguishes a powerful mage is the training.

Casting spells requires concentration and a clear vision of what you wish to achieve. For this purpose there are two tools the tyrian mage has access to.

The association chain helps visualise what you want your spells to do. You start with something physical in your surrounding, ideally an object your are very familiar with (a focus) and find images, emotions or similar you associate with the object, and then you go from that image in small steps to the effect your spell is going to have.

For example: You are pursuing someone and want them to stop running away. You grab your trusty knife and concentrate. The knife is a precise instrument, you only want to exert a small force where it is necessary. You remember using this knife to cut up a hare for dinner. You remember cutting through tendons and muscles. You imagine yourself cutting through your targets tendons and hold onto that image as you let the magic flow through your focus. Congratulations, you've just cast Necro Dagger 3

As I have mentioned foci play an important role in starting your association chain. A focus can be any kind of physical object, but there some classics such as the staff (easy to visualise range) or scepter (power or control).

Proper foci and association chains help with precision and speed, but most importantly greatly reduce fatigue.

Association chains can be taught, memorised and practiced, but the most powerful ones are deeply connected to personal experience. Similarly any object can be a focus, but one you have spent time familiarizing yourself with will work better.

Additionally your surroundings obviously impact your ability to follow these association chains as well, especially if you are not following a chain you have memorised by heart. An elementalist might find it harder to conjure flames in a frozen cave, while a guardian might find it easier to project a barrier while manning the walls of a fortress.

Some more examples from my characters: Reevus doesn't usually use his pistol as a focus for his magic. He uses it as a pistol. However, if he for whatever reason doesn't want to injure his target he has learned to knock people unconscious with magic. He had knocked someone out with the handle of his gun once, and he project this memory onto his target. (yes this is pistol 5)

On Ritual Magic

In many ways complex rituals are mostly just more elaborate foci and pre written associations. The difficulty here is to have every participant to concentrate on the same result, thus the complexity.

Coincidentally this is why Grawl worship "any odd statue". Group worship is an easy way to handle this problem. And we see the grawl perform some pretty powerful rituals. They don't worship random things because they're stupid, they worship then because it's a tool.

Okay so i just wanna start off by saying the potential i see with u and writing is insane. Heres some feedback to improve it:

don't compliment the driver too much -> obviously theyre gorgeous but from a reader viewpoint, it could come across as a bit too much. you have to mention the attraction the reader has to the driver, ofcourse, but maybe try and make it a bit subtle.

show, don't tell -> i honestly think you shouldn't live by this phrase because sometimes telling is necessary but in this snippet i think showing would be more beneficial. (e.g. instead of describing the drivers features in the beggining and then saying that he looks much more attractive now that hes grown up, you can describe it from the very start. So, it would go something like, "Familiar golden flecs in his emerald eyes, slightly longer curls cascading perfectly down to his ears, and stubborn baby/teenager fat no longer hiding his lean, sculpted body.") ***btw im guessing that the driver is lando bcs of the green eyes + curls but i may be completely wrong & also is this a childhood friends to lovers type situation or??? just curious��

sentence structure variations -> honestly i should take my own advice because i struggle so so much with this. basically what this means is that when ur writing, every sentence shouldn't be short and at the same time, every sentence shouldn't be long. There has to be a balance. A short sentence here and there. Maybe a slightly longer one to get the read more invested in your writing. And, then, once the reader i fully engaged and hooked onto your words, you can transition into longer sentences. Ha, see what i did there. I played with sentence variations!!! (E.g. you could rewrite, "As I step out onto the patio the warm, thick, Monoco breeze blows gently over my skin, I lean my head back, close my eyes, and take a deep breath, a deep breath that was immediately halted when I take in an all too familiar scent." into, "When I step out onto the patio, the warm, thick Monaco air blows gently over my skin. Relieved, I lean back. My eyes close and I breathe in the refreshing air; a breath almost immedietly halted when the all too familiar scent fills my lungs.") ***thats not the best example of sentence structure variation, i'll admit, but again, im so shit at it.

Unfortunately culturally Christian, and while my craft mostly avoids that unless it’s folk stuff or research stuff, I can’t deny that it probably influences/biases me in some areas so…yeah (I grew up Methodist and also have very mixed feelings about the denomination specifically, but this isn’t the time to get into that)

I also don’t like saying what “type” of witch I am per se, but I do like to categorize the different types of magic/work that I do and I think that makes things easier for tags

okay i rambled and took like 4 days to answer this so UNDER THE CUT

she is a tieflingggggg and that's what she's sticking with! if/when she does 'change shape' or w/e its a uhhh . spell. i forgot the name of it. disguise shape spell LMAO. but its only got a handful of variations compared to like. the mask of the shapeshifter yknow. okay so my like concept of amma and the winding water is that when "amity the first" is sent to investigate some like bhaalist pop up, bc its been a while since theyve been active but hey you cant trust a bhaalist. the first however convinces these like weeping devoted weirdo bhaalists that shes one of them, dives into the water and retrieves a babe from the like long dead watery remains of bhaal, but it's not really a child. like just some sort of . ok im losing words i was gonna say jellybean LOL but like equivalent of holding a very warm piece of light in hand. like divinity. and it's the weirdest thing for the first because bhaal literally wrecked personal havoc for a good few hundred years, pre and post death, and he's technically still dead by this point too when like they shouldn't be finding anymore spawn really popping up (or at least ones with enough divinity to warrant watching over in case of death and then resurrection of father dearest). but the divinity is warm and small and sweet, nothing like what the first had experienced with the crisis. and when the first like breaks through the surface of the river with a child pulled from bhaal's remains, it more than anything puts a good amount of fear back into them.

because the gods are Very Real, still, apparently, despite the spellplague and troubles causing all kinds of havoc around them. the first gets to the shore with this child who is not a child but is all at once, just a formation of river remains, bone, blood, weeds.

but this not-child opens its eyes and looks at her and as it grows, the first starts to notice it resembles her. not completely, there are some things that even the weirdness but also lack of magic can't replace when someone is created from their father's bones. yet horns grow, and a tail, and the child is a tiefling, by all accounts. the child is kind of hers.

as for like. how amma gets Educated™ and shizz, raised by the first and primistresses. introduced to maiming biting killing etc. definitely comes into her magic girl moment early as well, divine soul and all that (but evul!). amma is a weird quiet kid, takes well to like. everything outside the bhaalist attempts to foster their perfect little bhaalspawn considering it failed the last few times. attends like idk random ass colleges or like academies for one yr or smth. just randomly appears in the back of a class, learns, leaves. i would think it would be hilarious if she was at blackstaff academy in neverwinter and gale was there too at some point LMAO like lets start that rivalry off early. as far as like 'adopted' by another family goes, that did happen kind of, but she was also introduced to other bhaalist peers like torlin silvershield (who assisted with bringing back bhaal rip to gorions ward ig), thalamra vanthampur (funded the dead three when elturel was pulled into the hells), nysene eomane, rillyn family and other mostly devil worshipping families because its baldurs gate. you can throw a stone and like not 3ft from you hit someone who rly shouldnt worship a dang devil or god like.

granted she's not living this upper city lifestyle - these people are coming to the lower city, her domain. not an assassin for hire, but like, easy to bait and intrigue. is Known™ to some people but like do they want to know about her? probably not. especially when they see her collection of preserved. idk. eyeballs? spleens? choose a body part?

but amma is mostly just idling her and studying and picking up skills around the place, doing some sightseeing, maybe some unfortunate stabbing. the first kind of does try to get her into like. a family or two while amma is a wee child but there are uncontrollable urges and then combined with the blend of a child's emotional reaction and sharp objects and loud noises, it just becomes best for this kid to not be fostered. THERE WERE GOOD TIMES but there were also more bad than good. which is unfortunate and the first adds it to a long list of regrets. but amma pretty much starts going to these places and doing these things in her teens, well until what she remembers as like her late 20s early 30s, before returning to the temple of bhaal in baldurs gate. taking over. you come to me on the day of my daughter's wedding (has no daughter). freshly slaughtered class blood all over her and then like takes control of the bhaalist temple.

fucks around. finds out. in her downtime honestly still finds herself picking up books and whatever - debates attending lectures and the like at public forums. goes to a museum. looks at the sculptures. uses one for a weapon. moves on. culture !

Okay so Honeybee by SPG gets (understandably) used for romantic couples a lot but I was thinking abt it in terms of Nat and Arthur and then I got thinking abt how. They clearly don't have the words for it, since queer platonic relationship (and all its other variations) is a relatively new term (though the concept of asexuality or aromantic is NOT-- go away aphobes, this ain't for you), but that's what they ARE. And it just makes me happy that they accept that wholeheartedly. They acknowledge that they are each other's most important relationship and they act like it too. When I was writing your Christmas present, I thought I'd insert a little kiss in there as a joke (you know, like how we talked about the both of them being like 'yeah I think we should make out because that's what... people do, right?' and then immediately going 'oh no, that was weird let's never do it again'), but it just didn't feel... true to them or their moment, like. also, there’s stars drawn on the walls in the dark world room, like the glow-in-the-dark stars around asriel’s bed in the normal room. it’s so many similarities you kind of wonder how... ralsei got all those details right

another spelling puzzle detail! when berdley is remembering the spelling bee, where noelle locked up and couldn’t speak and he won, the word she got frozen on is “DECEMBER.” i didn’t get a screenshot (kind of hard, considering the buttons are broken up over a very wide space) but when you’re walking alone with noelle, and she talks about how she kind of likes scary things and how she feels about the dark world while you both press buttons to lower forcefields for each other, the word she’s slowly spelling out is... DECEMBER. which i think represents that she feels comfortable here/with kris and is sort of getting over her anxiety? idk but it’s another cute detail

this is a joke from chapter 1! right after you get assigned susie as a partner, when you’re sent to get chalk, if you talk to other kids in class temmie will tell you that suie is “very mean” and “said egg... never hatch!!” (because it’s hardboiled.) i guess susie was later like “...but will it?”

all the addisons will say variations of this if you go and talk to them after the spamton fight.

Writing appendix time!

They had reached the stage of full alphabetic development, but older modes in which only the consonants were denoted by full letters were still in use.

So this has always been kind of fascinating to me, since it seems very different from Tolkien’s usual Eurocentrism?

Also while I admit that I don’t know enough about the history of writing, I had the impression that a lot of the consonant focused systems (idk what to call them since I don’t think this case is a proper abjad?) were in some way ultimately derived from scripts originally used to write Afroasiatic languages where it makes a lot of sense because they tend to have consonantal roots. Which is not the case for Quenya.

(Sindarin maybe has some aspects of this? The plural conjugation at least... I don’t know that much Sindarin, sorry. But these systems would have been developed for Quenya from what I can tell.)

I could be wrong about the Afroasiatic origins of course, I don’t know all the writing systems in the world. Maybe there are examples of this sort of thing developing without consonantal roots being involved at all.

The Fëanorian letters are kind of a nightmare to read ngl. I imagine it’s even worse for dyslexic people. I mean they look very pretty, but that’s mostly because THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME. (okay fine they don’t but ykwim)

This script was not in origin an 'alphabet', that is, a haphazard series of letters, each with an independent value of its own, recited in a traditional order that has no reference either to their shapes or to their functions.

I do find this system very interesting, I don’t know if there’s a good real world counterpart to this? I mean there are familiar elements but the letters not having any kind of predetermined value (even one that would change drastically between languages and eras) seems very unusual. Maybe it was inspired by runic scripts though? I don’t know enough about them to say.

The part where phonetic features are represented with modifications to the letter reminds me of Hangul, though. Did Tolkien know about Hangul?

I have to admit that I’m kinda skimming all this though, I’m sure other people have written about this in more detail. There’s definitely stuff that I feel like I could be paying more attention to but I don’t have the focus right now.

I don’t think I have the energy to really read the spelling section with any sort of proper attention either, maybe I’ll come back to it later idk.

I do find it fun how much thought Tolkien put into this and how chaotic it is. It gives you the vibes of the kind of variation that you get in pre-modern scripts.
