i just think it's interesting that dropout was like "we as a company cannot express any political opinions towards the israeli/palestinian conflict" yet their BIGGEST show is currently discussing the ethics behind one group of people taking a "home" away from another group of people, and figuring out who started the cycle of fear and violence, and debating which violence is justified in this circumstance. like an npc literally said The Zionist/Apartheid Thing of "if we stop our Killing Them On Sight policy, they're gonna turn around and do that to us."

like. im not claiming this was an intentional analogy for the palestinian genocide (or even that it lines up perfectly)... just that media is inherently political, and this particular media company has branded itself as being anti-capitalist and, ironically, has profited off of this stance (from both selling anti-capitalist merchandise and from customers wanting to check out/support a company that aligns with their values). so it's kinda fucked up that they claim they don't "want the company to have political opinions" when the current show they're airing COULD BE VIEWED AS THEIR STANCE ON THIS VERY ISSUE.

listen it keeps popping up and I just gotta do this or my brain will melt (if you don’t see it around then god I wish that were me) there’s an age gap!- erm there’s also an age gap in farcille (ily), the most popular ship in the series...also chilchuck looks like a kid but a lot of fans recognize him as a dilf because of his relative age, so there should be no age gap discourse among adult characters because it feels so conditional tbh

kabru taking care of mithrun is racist!- marcille likes to take care of others as well. is that sexist, or just an aspect of her character?

he's also not the only one to care for mithrun. pattadol is shown to worry for him and milsril was the one to start taking care mithrun in the first place after he…...y’know. speaking of which-

they probably met when kabru was a kid!- neither of them showed signs of recognizing each other the entire time mithrun was introduced nor when they were together. and im pretty sure KABRU of all people would show some kind of recognition if they'd met before. it's kabru!!! the people person!!! mr. "i-noted-down-50+-characters-in-this-dude's-backstory-for-fun-and-actually-enjoy-social-gatherings"

you would think some kind of memory would come back to him especially after hearing mithrun’s backstory if milsril had even told kabru about him as a kid. but nope. it’s just fan speculation unless there's a side comic suggesting otherwise that i haven't seen

mithrun doesn't care about kabru, his shapeshift double looked like shit!- it's obviously because of mithrun's (then) lack of desires that it looked like that, but they really grow on each other

i think it's safe to assume it'd look more like kabru after they spent so much time together (also laios can barely even remember kabru's name..also saw his face multiple times and didn’t recognize him when they talked for the first time)

mithrun is racist!- he’s actually the least likely character to be racist since he lost his desires and that includes a desire for superiority over others. he even calls his past self out on that part of himself. the other elves in that side comic were being just as racist to shorter lived races but just didn’t use ‘outdated slurs’

(unfortunately literally every main character in dunmeshi is at least a lil prejudiced, but I believe it’s worldbuilding and a sign of the times rather than a reason ryoko kui is giving to hate each character)

taking care of others is a pain in the ass!- saying this as a reason kabru and mithrun shouldn't be together is basically saying disabled people shouldn't be allowed to have romantic relationships because they're a "burden"...if someone is actually willing to put in the work, then let them be.

that's not even all of their relationship, mithrun is the fighter of their duo and kabru would've been killed by the shapeshifter or something if he'd fallen down the hole on his own since he sucks at fighting monsters. mithrun helps collect ingredients for cooking every time, too (barometz fruits and griffin egg). he pulls his weight and then some!! i feel like people forget that part of mithrun a lot somehow.

+senshi literally cooks for everyone all time. it's kind of an important aspect of the narrative.

+also, while it is a popular fan thing I see around that kabru handfeeds mithrun, he literally never does lol this is mithrun using his own hands to eat:

just saying because people like to treat mithrun like a baby even though the narrative respects him as a capable adult who also has special needs because of an accident. he’s captain for a reason

kabru hates taking care of mithrun!- not exactly, he was initially surprised and put off but got used to it quickly. i’m sure he’s grateful for all the times mithrun saved him from a monster and teleported them out of danger as well

he even starts doing “unnecessary” things for mithrun’s comfort and safety like when mithrun pushes himself too hard fighting, even after his mission to take care of him was complete when the canaries came back

there's nothing more to their relationship!- they actually have had a very tight and consistent dynamic since they met and they incite the most change within each other by the end. kabru is the one who inspires mithrun to create new desires so he doesn't waste away, and mithrun is the first person we see kabru being genuine with and it leads him to be more honest with others by the end instead of tiptoeing around everyone all the time (that mask was also the reason some ppl initially disliked kabru…)

kabru’s relationship with mithrun is honestly so important for his character and vice versa, but it’s often disregarded because of one over exaggerated aspect of it (an aspect that isn’t even the first way they interact with each other) or because people want to just straight up ignore it for some reason 🥲🥲

kui dedicates many panels to them that don't particularly serve the narrative as a whole in order to demonstrate this and i think that's pretty significant

you're taking this too seriously!- as if i'm the first person in the world to be crazy about a ship or the characters 😭 i love analyzing text and it's upsetting to see them mischaracterized when kui lays out the characters so clearly and deliberately

sometimes it feels like lewis has a degree of distance from the rest of the grid that makes it hard to connect to him (i, a newer fan, took a while to even get a proper sense of his vibes). he’s such a legend and icon in the sport there’s always a little bit of separation i think — maybe subconsciously for some of the older drivers, but i think it’s more prevalent in the younger drivers because so many of them actually idolized him for years and are suddenly racing with him. max may be getting there but he also grew up with most of the grid, and he has his funky little hobbies (twitch streaming sim races) that give fans a glimpse of him casually. i’m not sure why lewis doesn’t participate in grill the grid/f1 videos but when you think about it that’s how a lot of people get some more casual impressions of the drivers they don’t follow as closely (or at all), and then he’s not there. there’s just this air of legendary about him so when you see him standing alone it seems intentional, in a way. he is always standing on his own as a leader in many (metaphorical) ways so i can understand why the drivers might see him minding his business during the parade and think he wants the space.

anyway all this to say there is a special kind of happiness in seeing charles decide to break through the wall of godliness to keep lewis company and bring him back to their level. lewis seems so much more engaged and lively and mortal when he’s happy chatting with the other drivers and being a bit mischievous and it’s like oh, i’m finally seeing the lewis hamilton he was before the myth and fame and weight of leadership. i think he’s really going to seem like a whole new person next season with charles and ferrari for those of us who didn’t know that lewis and i really really like the idea of getting to meet him ❤️

saw some people over on twt reading neil's reaction to jean comparing grayson to drake as anger at jean and that didn't even cross my mind. I saw it as recognition of a threat to one of the people he cares about, a situation he thought had been dealt with only to happen again to another person in his selective circle. he obviously doesn't know the extent of what happened to jean in the nest, his own experience a blur of hurt and confusion, but at the moment he decides he's going to deal with it the best way he knows how.

Because it's such a big part of Shadow's progression as a character. Yes, she's dead. She died at the hands of humans. She's a prime example of the needless cruelty they're capable of. And yet she didn't doubt her love for earth/humanity for a second, not even while she was bleeding out on the ARK's floor in front of her little brother. She was dying and she still asked him to protect humanity, to watch over the ones who took everything from him.

And even though she's dead and gone and he's never getting her back in any way, Shadow makes the conscious decision to protect the earth in the end. He finds it in himself to believe that humanity is worth it, despite having lived through the horrors it has to offer.

Idk, I feel it wouldn't hit as hard if we just found out that whoops, Maria was actually alive all along!

scaramouche is definitely the type of person who would find you enjoying the smallest things childish, but he secretly enjoys it as well because he actually loves seeing you so happy over the smallest things <3

let's say one time, you and he decided to stay up because neither of you could sleep. and when the sun was slowly starting to peek out, you got all excited and started slightly tugging on his sleeve, "kuni, look! the sun is rising!" scaramouche doesn't get why you're so happy over this—it happens every day; what's so special about the sunrise? he finds it... a bit childish. (though he'll never actually admit that to you, or else you'd be pouting at him all day long, and he doesn't want that.)

but seeing your face being astonished with how the colors of the sky gradually change and how the sun slowly starts to shine, maybe scaramouche understands it a bit more.

Your recent post about all the female rep in the game is the same exact conversation I had with a friend last night! I really love how this game has normalized the presence of female leads to the point where it's not even noticed until it all kind of hits you after you've been playing for a long time!

When S2 ended, some guy friends of mine mentioned they thought it would be nice to see some male leads in S3 because they wanted to see themselves represented more. And then I shared with them my experience of seeing normalized female leads and it sparked this whole conversation about being able to relate yourself through a character and their traits instead of what they look like.

These guy friends of mine had been using the inkling girl for their character model since S1 just because they liked it better. Even as new hairstyle choices have come along, they've still stuck with it because they've come to like the game for its style and design over some kind of gendered rep that keeps their interest.

I think that's where Splatoon really excels! Not just as a game but with its environment as well! The world and what we're presented within are so normalized, people don't think much more of it once they've already digested the information they were presented with! I think that's really cool because it shows that games can be likable, relatable, exciting, and hugely successful without a male lead focus!

I think there should be more talk about this because Nintendo really nailed their nonchalant normalization here!

I wholeheartedly agree with you that Splat does such a good job "normalizing" (in a lack of better words) situations/stories(?) like this, and not really making it needlessly obvious. I don't really know how to explain it, but do you know how other media sometimes makes it feel like the girl is "shoehorned" into the trio group? Splat does a good job of not doing that.

It's hard to talk/explain about this stuff without it sounding like it's "abnormal" or asking for the bare minimum, but how can you when the entire shooter market is super masc-centric? I also agree that there should be more conversations about this topic because it's really interesting! There really isn't much precedent for something like this so I would love to hear someone else talk about it (especially someone who can talk about it more eloquently than I can LOL).

ok so because it seems riptide is gonna be coming up on a VERY interesting point in the story in regards to reveals, with them on their way to the hole in the sea and on their way to arlin and etc etc etc, i figured i might as well put this hunch of mine here as a monument to see whether it’ll get disproven or not.

i have a feeling that chip is far more important to the story than we’ve been led to believe, not just to the story as we know it, but the WORLD of mana as a whole, or at the VERY LEAST with everything going on with the hole in the sea.

a lot of stuff is up in the air and very ambiguous, especially in regards to what actually happened to chip when down there; however, from what i remember it seems incredibly likely that he somehow learned celestial when down there, and is the only one of the og black rose pirate crew that we know of who can speak celestial and READ THE MAPS.

IN CELESTIAL.

ON CHIP, DRE, AND FINN’S AS BACKS.

from what we know, or at least what i remember, lizzy also doesn’t speak celestial. dre can’t speak celestial. finn probably doesn’t speak celestial.

it also seems that whatever caused all of them to not remember most of what happened in the black sea was INTENTIONAL.

there’s a near complete absence of memory for pretty much everyone after a certain point. with how the black sea canonically messed with dre, finn, and arlin’s memories in the one shot, corrupting their perception of their memories to make important moments to them instead be painful (as seen with arlins memory of picking up chip and taking him onto the crew being ruined with a sense of betrayal as an adult chip stabbed arlin, which i won’t even get into how that could make chip reuniting w arlin that much more tragic because arlin can only associate chip w betrayal now coupled w how many more of his memories might’ve been corrupted over the course of the past DECADE in the hole in the sea with him apparently being the most susceptible to failing the necessary save to not have his memories corrupted) which makes it incredibly likely that whatever influence the black sea has not only impacts MEMORY but also DESIRES.

this tracks w how almost all of niklaus’ deals involve people’s desires and twisting them, and when their desires corrupt them enough they begin to die and spew BLACK OOZE.

SUCH AS A CERTAIN OTHER LARGE BODY OF LIQUID COLORED SIMILARLY WITH CORRUPTIVE PROPERTIES AND TIES TO DESIRE.

in the one shot the weird egg thing and the entire area they were in dealt heavily in desire.

when corrupted people in the black sea are slain their strongest desires from when they were alive were passed on to the person who killed them (jays newfound desire to find the dread queens tomb, gillions desire to help the tree, and whatever chips desire was cuz i’ve completely forgotten but it’s probably incredibly relevant 😅).

whatever chips ties are to the hole in the sea, and possibly to the prophecy, and the entirety of the black rose pirates legacy, i feel like we’re gonna find that a lot of the things regarding chips past is gonna be a whole lot more important to mana than we thought.

and i’m incredibly excited.
