Okay, this got way more notes than I expected it to, so I feel like I should say something.

Hi! I'm the anonymous friend of OP who made this!

Just want to clear up a few things:

I asked my friend to post this on my behalf because I was in a severe mental health episode where I wouldn't have been able to handle it if the fandom responded badly to this. Luckily, that ended up being overcautious on my part! No fandom is perfect obviously and I can't say everyone has responded perfectly to this post, but overall, the response has genuinely been so much better than I expected. Thank you guys.

This post is lacking in some detail & nuance, and that's not an accident. I actually originally wrote - I'm serious - a 1600 word essay about this topic, in which I was able to essentially cover every possible nuance of this issue & pre-emptively refute every possible counter-argument. I realised pretty quickly though that probably nobody was going to read all that, so I distilled the basic points into this, hoping it would be a more approachable format.

I've noticed some people in the notes saying this looks like a spotify wrapped presentation. Um, I've been using the youtube app for my music this whole time, I wouldn't know anything about that, it's genuinely a coincidence. I'm not offended or anything, you guys are 100% free to keep calling this a spotify wrapped, I'd just... like you to be mindful of derailing, because frankly, being reminded of spotify wrapped is the dumbest thing to derail a whole serious post for. It's one thing to listen to what I'm saying and then jokingly say "i like your spotify wrapped", it's another thing to only engage with this post to make the spotify wrapped comparison.

People downplaying or defending ocean's ableism (and bullying disabled fans in relation to that) is far from the only example of ableism in this fandom. I know that. I chose to zero in on this issue because (1) I felt it was, in itself, a big enough issue for a whole slideshow (or a 1600 word essay), (2) I've witnessed and experienced this a lot firsthand and therefore felt qualified to speak on it, and (3) I was considering making multiple slideshows similar to this, each focusing in on a different issue, because if I try to cover every issue at once then I won't have time to properly address any of them

I don't consider it inherently derailing that people are bringing up other unrelated examples of RTC ableism in the notes! These are all important discussions that need to happen. That being said - the main reason I made this post was to inspire some self-reflection from abled fans and, hopefully, better behaviour.

I worry that some people in the notes are ignoring criticisms of the fandom, which includes them, and instead focusing on criticising people actually involved in RTC, like the scriptwriters and producers. Those people need to be held accountable too, but let's just be mindful - are you seeing a post that was meant to prompt self-reflection on your own behaviour and instead just using it to dunk on the other abled people for doing ableist things you obviously had no part in, since you could never be ableist yourself?

Okay, above nitpicks aside - thank you to everyone who reblogged this post. Seriously. It gives me a lot of hope to think that I can speak up about the ableism I'm experiencing and have hundreds of people see it, agree with it, and even actively boost my voice. I'm often belittled when I speak up about ableism in fandom - that's kind of what the post was about - and so I had low expectations for how this would go over, but it warms my heart to see the notes on this post go up. I want everyone to know that it really does make a difference when you read and share posts like these, because it makes at least one disabled person feel more welcome in the fandom.

you guys totally free to reblog the base post instead of this addition. i've said a lot of words here and the whole point of the original post was to be simple and approachable - i think sometimes presenting the basic idea in a way people will understand is more important than getting across every nuance. I wouldn't mind this version getting spread around a bit among people who already saw the first part though.

I know people nowadays are probably sick of seeing her with all the beauty and fashion merch around that depicts her and/or Marilyn Monroe but she is considered a classic Hollywood beauty for a reason. Ironically in her day she was more of the alternative beauty when compared to many of her contemporaries. She always came off with such elegance and grace, and she was so charming. Apparently she was a delight to work with considering how many of her co-stars had wonderful things to say about her. Outside of her beauty and acting ability she was immensely kind. She helped raise funds for the Dutch resistance during WWII by putting on underground dance performances as well as volunteering at hospitals and other small things to help the resistance. During her Hollywood career and later years she worked with UNICEF a lot. Just an all around beautiful person both inside and out.

No one could wear clothes in this era like she could. She was every major designer's favorite star and as such her films are time capsules of high fashion at the time. But beyond that, she had such an elegance in her screen presence that belied a broad range of ability. • Let’s say MC is like a cook or something for idk any form of public gatherings. They work their arms off trying to quickly get lots of food cooked- that tastes good enough.

• Even if more they have lots of co-workers, they still have to do so much to have enough for so many people. Hell, they’re still cooking to keep making enough while the gatherings go on.

• Clotted Cream found a little defect in his food, maybe a dessert that was a bit undercooked. So he quickly sneaks into the kitchen to tell one of the chefs, just so they could fix the food before anyone makes a commotion. After all, he is a very kind-hearted, empathetic consul isn’t he…?

• He ends up talking to MC, showing the small defect. To his surprise, MC is panicking like crazy, afraid of losing their job. They quickly go out to the foods and take the tray of the desserts with a defection and shove it in the oven. They’re thanking him greatly, bowing a few times.

• Clotted Cream notices their hands look a little wrecked, with a few bandages over their fingers. “…Say, are your hands alright? They look to be in a quite- rough state.”

• MC is surprised at the question, answering that they have to work a lot to get the food out in time.

• Clotted Cream ends up talking to them longer than needed, and he’s- interested to say the least. He wonders what they’re life is like, given he was adopted into a noble household.

• Clotted Cream ends up scouring through official files to scour more information about them…He ends up seeing all the bills MC is paying, it could be literally anything: debt, medical, whatever. He feels an odd sense of pity? Or is it…something more humane?

• He ends up throwing himself into a hole of complete curiosity- and soon obsession. He wants to know more about their life, how they survive their endless hours of work. He works endless as well- but not in the way they do.

• At every public gathering, [where they’re serving food] he’s talking to them more than he is to the guests, always asking questions about their life and how they’re doing.

• At some point, he can’t take it anymore, seeing them suffer to keep their surviving. So one day, MC finds that all the bills they had to pay are just gone. Paid for. It confused them.

• The next day, MC goes over to the bill issuer, questioning things. Which the bill issuer responds, “Oh, a cookie came in and said he was your fiancé so he paid them all for you.”

• MC, absolutely flabbergasted, tries to question the bill issuer, wondering who the cookie was. But the bill issuer didn’t know. Only noticing he had green eyes. He’s in a disguise.

• MC goes back home, confused af. For one thing, they don’t even have a fiancé, and two, they don’t even know who this dude is.

• Meanwhile, Clotted Cream is laying in his bed, giggling like some girl that has a stupid school crush. He couldn’t believe he managed to get away with it! Not that it would matter, he could easily trick people into thinking the two of you were engaged.

• A few days later, when MC comes home from a long day at work, they notice literally ALL of their stuff is packed up. And guess who comes out from the closet with clothes in his hands? That’s right, sir fucking Clotted Cream.

• Before MC can even question him, he pressing a kiss to their cheek and smiling. “I’m just getting everything ready for you to move in with me! Don’t worry darling, this is the last of everything.”

• MC can try everything to question and defy him, but he’s just pulling the “I’m sir Consul, I can ruin your life. Now love me.”

• Poor MC, going from poor to confused and weirded out.

• If MC is compliant, he’s a needy mf, who’s super affectionate behind closed doors. Constantly giving them hugs and compliments.

And ykw, in re: queer people eating up terf rhetoric uncritically, I'm STILL reeling about how, when I came back from Twitter, i was seeing all these ads for Folx and Plume on Tumblr, and the ONLY comments and reblogs were attacks, things saying "this company exploits trans people, don't use it."

Plume is a company run BY trans people. It's a bunch of trans doctors who will prescribe you HRT via telehealth and do all your labs, refills, needles etc for like $99/mo (last time i checked). Folx is the same but a bit cheaper and operates in different states, in an attempt to cover gaps in trans Healthcare coverage.

As soon as I started blocking terfs I stopped seeing those comments. But I also stopped seeing anyone talking about Folx or Plume. Point blank. I dont even get the ads for it anymore. It's like everyone just absorbed the idea that they're "preying on trans people" by giving you HRT, which is TERF 101 LEVEL SHIT. None of you even fucking Googled it!!!

Like honestly I'm pretty bitter about this whole thing, and the fact that I've not yet seen ANYONE talk about this or own up to it in the 2-3 years since???? Folx and Plume are both still around. I've had to consider using them multiple times even in relatively "safe" states like Michigan, because sure, your insurance might cover HRT, but good luck finding a doctor who will prescribe it, because PP doesn't do HRT there, there's like 4 doctors in the whole state that will, and they will be like a 6 hour drive from you if they're accepting patients at all.

So like idk especially with all the absolute HORSE SHIT that you guys like to put TPOC, intersex ppl, asexual ppl, and trans men thru at the mere SUGGESTION of terfs, I just have to wonder how many of you are STILL repeating word-for-word terf rhetoric without unpacking it. (I mean, in addition to those of you I SEE STILL DOING THIS.) You may be critically/outwardly against TERFS, but if you don't actually take ANY time to block them, or even recognize and challenge their rhetoric in your head, you arent doing enough to avoid them. Signed, an asexual gnc transmasc. This was another instance of queerphobic, divisive terf rhetoric getting passed around uncritically for YEARS. (I can't speak to this bc I'm not a lesbian but it does feel eerily similar to "bi lesbians are harmful to our community" as well, that whole, "anything that could even feasibly one day sorta be tied back to Men means its #unsafe" vibe, but also a very, "anyone queerer than a cis political lesbian is a threat to our community," vibe, which feels r/dfemmy to me.)

I see people TALK about the dark ages of asexual hatred on this site, but I dont see a lot of you dissecting how that happened or how to prevent it from happening again to other communities. Final fest idea future-present-past

I know that a lot of people have said this already but this is what I think they will do/ what I would do.

Future/Present/Past

I know that it sounds backwards but Shiver is def more future and I would switch Frye and Big man but future/past/present sounds worse but that would be the ideal team for me.

Future- 1. next gen, like if the current idols were to have kids, it would be them, or at the very least kids their age. We could see adult donny and shelly, Harmony could be older, this is self indulgent but I would be down for a pearlina child (besides 8). I dont know what the story would be, maybe something to do with the zapfish again but someone new, it could be more about the metro, but idk how that would work exactly. It could also be virtual… idk. 2. Far into the future. Squid sisters, off the hook, deep cut, they are all legendary, but many many many idols have taken their role since then. Captain 3 is nearing the cuttlefish's age. Its a completely new cast with only mentions of long times ago when these idols were in their prime/alive. This woul dbe great for a new species, as octos have been basically fully integrated and not a new group is the minority(the cycle continues and such).

Present- 1. More of what we have. We see all the idols again, maybe not as big but they are all existing, doing something in the world. We would probably see the zapfish get taken again, similar formula but basically what theyve been doing, maybe we get 4 idols, new species maybe? Idk but you get the idea. 2. Same time period, different part of the world. We could have oth world tour mentioned, maybe instead of squids and octos, this city is a whole different species, like we could get sharks or vampire squids, probably in addition to the pre existing squids and octos though. But this would be a great opportunity for more species to be added without having to be like “oh they escaped/ are being integrated” again. The story could be basically anything, it could be something to go with the other species history, or maybe it can play into the second place, like if future wins then it is about planning, if its past then maybe more on the history, but it takes place right around now.

Past- 1. Octarian soldier. I would say squidbeak, but there is only so much you can do with Callie and Marie, you would need to retroactively add a whole agent… yeah. I think this could be sick, we could have to fight inklings, we can have Mariana come back, een some agent 8 references. I think that the goal would either be to get out of the octarian society or like be an elite. Maybe this is where they could make choices you make change the story… but that might be a bit ambitious for splatoon. I can still hope. 2. The past past. Like og squidbeak splatoon. You are in a war with the octarians, or inklings. Maybe we get 2 story modes. Who knows. But this takes place long before the squid sisters, gramps isnt even a father yet. We could see how they got to the separation, we would have skinny jude. The hud would be kind of bornign but I would king of pokemon legends arceus, we could wven have other characters ancestors show up and stuff. 3. Like before inklings and octolings were fully humanoid. Like this is crazy unrealistic and they would be starting from scratch but it would be sick for them to be like “ok we are going back to prehistoric times, no new hair styles, no current gear, you dont even have the news, you have to read everything on scrolls.” like that would probably sink the franchise but you have to admit, it they really went through with it that takes balls

AND OMG YES LET ME TELL YOU THE STORY so i've talked about this play a lot on here i think!! it was the one where my director got really mad and yelled at people backstage and the asm back there put his headset mic down so we could be nosy and listen in LMAO (while we were all hiding in the booth and then got jumpscared when his bald whiny head appeared outside the window) etc. it was that show!!! so also what happened was that bc i'm a little catwalk monkey lights kid freak i was always up there or asked to go up there to help with things!! and sometimes i have to do not osha safe things like climb on the batons!! (allow me to find a picture for reference)

OKAY I ALMOST COULDN'T FIND A PIC BUT THEN I FOUND EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR (i'm going to guess my school is just especially unsafe LMAO like when our theatre was constructed it was NOT done right we have so many violations and like not all of our channels work...some of them are double channeled...etc SORRY THIS IS ME RANTING DW ABOUT FOLLOWING ALONG)

OKAY SO ANYWAY IF U SEE HOW LIKE THESE "BATONS" ARE JUST THESE METAL RODS LITERALLY JUST SECURED BY CHAINS??? WE HAD A BUNCH OF THESE ON OUR CATWALKS (so not all of them had these curtains on them!!) and sometimes we'd have to hang lights on ones that were far out (like not easily accesible) so what i would have to do is climb over the railing of our catwalks and step onto these little tiny poles and basically sit on two of them (yes there was a lot of space between these batons. that's why it was not safe and not a job we trusted a lot of people to do. yes my director forced me to try and wear a harness my last year of hs [after an entire year of not wearing a harness doing this stuff] and no he did not succeed or actually care that much [so i basically never wore a harness risking my life LMAO]) BUT ANYWAY so basically during this show i needed to go out onto these batons to hang a light!! but i was just thinking about where i wanted to put the light and everything and i needed to hold my phone!! so instead of putting it in my pockets or on the floor like a normal person i held it in my mouth!! which i had done multiple times but apparently this time i bit it a bit too hard and so the screen broke and would no longer register touch!! a wonderful time honestly!!! and so then i had go back to my super ancient phone bc i didn't feel like trying to get the screen fixed and didn't even know if it was worth it but that phone was always on its last life and started giving out this summer so then i finally got it repaired yay!!! (AND ALSO FOR REFERENCE old phones were built different yk. like my old phone, the show right after this play where i bit and broke this other phone yk, i accidentally dropped this old phone from the catwalks bc my hands were really shaky one day and it SURVIVED LMAO)

tw for blood ofc!! so about my finger!! so also during this show!! in the catwalks we hung up a little curtain that reached like halfway to the ground or so so that we could project cute little patterns onto the curtain (this was a horror show btw. very cutesy. very demure.) but after we did the show, i was sent up there to take the curtain down, well that curtain had been a BEAST to hang in the first place like it had taken i think two separate groups over the course of two weeks to get that thing secure so like there was wire wrapped around one of the catwalk bars a thousand times PLUS there was tape all around all that wire so i'm like tearing through this all trying to get the wire undone but then it cut me!! :( so my thumb started bleeding and so one of my kids kept a blood covered wire (my blood ofc) as a souvenir and i left my bloody thumbprint on that bar :)) and then i think we literally just put like spike tape around my cut it was a crazy day but that happens often!! i remember moving a bed once and then i was like "EW WHY IS THE BED WET" but it was actually bc my finger!! was once again bleeding 😭 I HAVE TONS OF CRAZY STORIES ASK ME ANYTIME ABOUT THEM!!

accent enthusiast and yorkshire citizen here: tho posh pricks and classists attack regional accents (even though by nature these accents are arguably MORE english and retain more germanic features because of less education and/or more rurality, while they sound french) because they hate poor people, i am going to hypothesise that they are also racist

so. i assume youre northern by the sound of your h dropping. h dropping is a very white northern accent trait, people who grew up in places with a significant white majority. however, t dropping is very recent addition to working class northern english which originated with estuary english and spread across the country by ethnic minorities - mostly by second/third gen a. carribbean, south asian and polish people. this creates a new type of working class english which is unique to every city, every ethnicity and every household across britain. its called MBE (multicultural british english). it is usually spoken in places with diverse population. and although not much research has been done on these accents (apart from the one in london bc of fucking course), they are spoken by many many people.

mbe is usually a mix of a. carribbean, south asian, polish and regional slang amd accent features. but one defining characteristic is the t dropping. which again is a pretty new accent feature outside of london. so my hypothesis: they focus on the t dropping specifically because it's unique to ethnically diverse english.

i do however know a bit about midlands' accents/rural english accents, and from what i know of them, the 'dropping Ts' part of certain dialects has been present for centuries. it's called the glottal T (which is v funny to me bc saying that out loud on its own will reveal to people if you t-glottal or not). it's really hard to find out where this originated from and i cant speak for up north but ik in my area the general consensus is that it's just. always been around (which i know can't be true so again! if anyone has any sources or knows anything im such a nerd about these things so pls dont be shy!). still, i always thought it came from old english and a lot of influence from scots? and from my knowledge from its origins in england i always thought it did START with the rural areas like mine? alas for my own sanity i try not to research t-glottalling too much bc even the 5 mins i did for this to double check my facts had me seeing words like 'insidious' and 'lazy' and 'ugly' being thrown about literally bc of a single letter. like insidious are we being serious rn. someone tell barnaby from kent to take deep breaths.

the polish thing really interested me here though bc ive heard once or twice people say about my dialect/region that there are polish elements, and as someone who knows nothing about polish i couldn't really pinpoint to you what it was or anything but seeing it in your ask i was like !!!!! fr !!!!! it's interesting that this could be why people say that.

going back to h-dropping and t-glottalling, my region is actually RENOWNED for 'dropping letters and syllablles left right and centre' <- direct quote from someone trying to explain it lmao. like we've got very farmer accents to the point my flatmate once - very rudely - went on and ON about me having a west country accent and even when i explained it to her over and over that no just bc i have a RURAL accent doesnt mean it has to be west country, she still wouldn't let it go and tried to make a joke that my accent was 'inbred' bc of it. this is the flatmate i made cry and is now too scared to stay at our flat though so all is well <3 so yeah it's not just the northerners! even if we all have to suffer at the hands of the RP folk

the mbe thing is super interesting though bc while i dont know enough about it to speak on the letter dropping, i do know that my own accent has picked up a couple mbe features since coming to uni (mainly just new slang than actual accent but ive had to catch myself a couple times icl). not only is my uni city one of the most multicultural cities in england, but a lot of the student population are from london, which IS the most multicultural city in england. i know there's the stereotypical roadman accent that a lot of people tease about, but that is of course hugely inspired by the ethnicities you listed, particularly caribbean, and a lot of that comes right out of london. there's definitely something to be said about the fact that the people who most often get called chavs/get slated for being rough are also the ones who speak with that multicultural accent. like i WONDER what that's about

i spent like half of last night thinking about the liam plotline in The Andreadis Gene and i have way too many ideas. IF i reintroduce tobias at his death scene that offers me an opportunity to make jesse so pissed that he punches his best friend in the face.

which like. i love that because it’s jesse. the only “violence” he’s cool with is fencing. it would really fuck everything up. and THEN, with the timeskip, that leaves jesse almost completely alone (still debating if i should keep jesse and liam’s friends from the academy? i think i probably should, but i thought previously how liam’s death would screw up their relationship, especially since they werent there, they dont know the truth, and jesse is so guilty for drawing liam into rhys’s shit that he couldnt possibly risk getting his girls involved, so clearly he needs to go back to being casual and dismissive towards them like he is the rest of the academy.)

however. i don’t know how i could have liam’s death be explainable. maybe they say he was mauled by wolves (true enough. haha werewolf murder moment) but how is he found? how do they explain his presence on the evans estate, and right by the old groundskeeper cabin, no less? AND it feels kind of cheap to add a new character immediately after killing the last off.

BUT it also offers me an opportunity to use liam’s siren song. i was vividly imagining jesse trying to go after him after he tells them to cover their ears and rhys having to grab jesse and cover his for him (this offers “rhys is unaware that he’s a supernatural being” foreshadowing, when he isnt affected by the song. ofc if anyone asks he’d just say “its because i barely even tolerated liam. obviously his stupid little song can’t seduce me”) AND supplies further reasoning for tobias to show up (he heard the howling first, and would probably think “eh, theyre just doing normal wolf stuff” however if he heard the sirensong in addition to that, it gives him an opportunity to go “oh fuck, thats jesse and rhys’s friend”)

the thing i cant decide on is how affected the wolves are by the song. if rhys isn’t affected due to being supernatural… well, i could excuse that as his soul being one that has a soulmate mechanic, which also means birch would be unaffected by sirens (not that there’s going to be a chance to test that) i think maybe some of the wolves are affected, and others aren’t. this would be based upon omegaverse bullshit, like idk, maybe the alpha is immune.

so, the alpha kills liam, and tobias kills the alpha, and, as if we dont have enough shit going on, rhys starts getting his visions and passes out? actually, idk if i kept that part of the story in the second draft plotline. will have to check: it is important to a lot of later plot points that rhys starts getting the memories of the people who’ve shared his soul.

i was ALSO thinking about the final showdown between birch and the gang. it seriously did not make sense in the first draft that he changed his mind about killing rhys solely because he professed his love to jesse.

and i had the brilliant idea of the return of rhys’s mind setting. tobias, using his illegal mind manipulation, in a last-ditch effort to save them all, draws birch into rhys’s mind. there he sees his soulmate oak and oak talks them out of killing rhys. this would have the emotional payoff of one thousand love confessions. but also while we’re there mind-rhys needs to act like its completely obvious that he’s been in love with jesse this entire time.

on another note, i was thinking about arthur’s religious background and instinctual homophobia, and how rhys and jesse would react to arthur going “wait… are you guys *queers*???” (jesse goes “NO ABSOLUTELY NOT” and rhys is like (to jesse) “coward,” (then to arthur,) “yeah, i am. what about it?”) but i was also thinking of it in the context of rhys and arthur having a private conversation about liam and jesse’s relationship, and rhys ensuring that arthur keeps his mouth shut regardless of “what God thinks”.

its interesting to think of the differences between the boys and their queerness. like, liam is the most out-and-proud about it, which is important to jesse learning to accept himself. jesse is aware of who he is, but unable and afraid to show it due to what happened when his dad found out. rhys is completely okay with being gay, but he doesn’t see any reason to talk about it. berry casual. arthur is, obviously, very repressed. tobias offers the perspective that things like that are *normal*—he’s seen it in nature, hes been among the other fae and seen their indifference to gender.

And yeah access to those spaces is difficult and often gatekept to shit so I don't think that's anyone's fault, esp not transfems. Your brutal exclusion is never your fault. Still, I think it is possible to have these CRUCIAL conversations about transmisogyny and how transfems are affected... without making sweeping statements about what other trans people do or do not experience. It might be easier for people to check their transmisogyny if they could understand how it does in fact affect them sometimes, their behavior, language, and the spaces they frequent, in addition to how it perpetuates this awful exclusion. Being hypervisible and yet constantly excluded IS something that transfems should have a word for. That IS something I do not understand the pain of as a transmasc. It must make them feel utterly insane. By all means, coin more words! It enriches these conversations when we can relate to each other more and we have more language for the discussions we're having. We want to tear down the walls keeping us apart, not build more.

to be clear, I don't think tma/tme are "unnecessary." Transmisogyny is real and transfems do really experience uniquely awful shit, especially from within the community. But that in an of itself is not a unique experience. Being excluded from "women and nonbinary only spaces" is actually not a uniquely transfem experience. So many transmascs do NOT benefit from patriarchy and I am tired of this claim coming from non-transmascs.

HOW we all get policed by our in-groups presents differently, but policing each others experiences is not something that bridges understanding. And I'm sorry but in 3 years of this convo I've not once seen someone bring up tma/tme to discuss transfems without entirely dismissing swaths of other queer people in the process. A lot of other bad-faith misinformation is STILL getting passed around about the coiner of the term "transandrophobia" and what it supposedly means, and how the term itself is transmisogynistic. None of that ever matches up with what I actually see in transandrophobia discussions. I see a lot of diverse people discussing and relating to transandrophobia, specifically a lot of tpoc and intersex people, even a lot of transfems. The people who talk ABOUT 'transandropobia truthers' present a much different idea of the discourse we're having than what i actually see. That inconsistency is a red flag for me.

my post is about winwin from nct! (he’s my fav i’m so protective over him hhhhhhhhh)

idk how familiar you are with nct or the mess that it is lol but basically one of its subunits debuted on july 7th, 2016 (7 years ago today) and winwin was one of the original 7 members. his first group is called nct 127 and the 127 represents the longitude of seoul, but there’s also a theory/cute little thing saying that it also represents the number of members and how they were added:

7 + 2 + 1 = 10.

he was kind of phased out/removed from the group at the end of 2018, and there was never any announcement saying he left officially so the group has 10 members on paper but only 9 active members

a lot of fans have accepted he probably isn't coming back :( but the issue is the group got more popular after he left so to a lot of people he isn't super important especially cause solo/single unit stanning is really common in this fandom. also because he was neglected by the company he never really had a lot of lines/center parts/screen time so it's easier to "forget/ignore" him as horrible as it sounds :(

and it's unfortunate but a lot of people don't treat him well, and what baffles me is that he wasn't removed cause he did something wrong ;-; most of the time people dont like past members cause they were removed for problematic/illegal behavior but that's not the reason why (the reason is mostly political, since he is chinese and went to promote in the chinese unit wayv starting in jan. 2019, and to my understanding china occasionally has kpop bans it's easier to get around them if none of the members are in an explicitly kpop group such as nct 127. this is a whole complicated issue in itself and there's some discourse on twt rn about it (read the qrts if you want but be ready for drama lol))

a lot of his fans and wayv stans are much happier with how he is now, because he really opened up as a person and grew as an artist following his departure from the group. he was definitely limited before due to the neglect and also cause he occasionally got boxed in as being the cute guy everyone likes and dotes on but never really an artist or even person in his own right. also he struggled with korean sometimes so he got to express himself much better when surrounded by his chinese bandmates

(though it is really important to note that people push a narrative that he hated being in nct 127 and didn't really love the members which i think is very untrue, you can tell he really worked hard and enjoyed their music, he notably has a strong bond with many people in the group)

i love him in nct 127 and i think he was a very special addition to the group, i would welcome him back anytime <3 but i am happy to see him where he is now, more successful than ever before.

but here is the issue:

since most 127 stans see the group as 9, they celebrate the debut of nct 127 and its 9 active members (which is kinda ironic cause winwin debuted on 160707 but most of the active lineup (literally everyone except yuta and haechan) did not but i digress). due to the nature of nct, he debuted again in 2018 (nct u) and in 2019 (wayv). but his first debut, the day he became an idol, is july 7th, 2016. and what hurts is because when people celebrate the debut of the current 9 member group, they overlook the debut of an original member of the group. which is why later yesterday night i also praised a big fanacc for posting ot10 pics and videos. i dont mind people wanting the focus on the 9 active members more, but i think its weird to call youself a fan of the group or an nctzen and ignore the debut of a member so blatantly :( there are random journalists who were posting articles but someone who claims to be ot20 or ot22 or ot23 or ot25 ot ot26 or whatever u people are this week to not say anything is kind of weird. and it's also why i dont like this other big fanacc because they post throwbacks but always ignore him, how can you be a throwback acc and not post a PAST member ;-; like i said if he was horrible and dishonorably discharged (lol) from the group its a dif story but this is just ridiculous.

anyway i hope that going forward we can love all members of nct and celebrate all of them <3

A random tangent on collectivism and individualism

This is literally just my thoughts on something take it with a grain of salt. I'm no expert but would love to research these topics, especially on how they manifest back home.

I was raised with a somewhat collective cultural mindset, I don’t just care for myself but that same care and concerned is extended to the others around me no matter the setting. I’m aware of the web that extends far past my circle and myself. In contrast I grew up with media from the States, which is Individualist. Everything is about the individual and the individual is more important than the rest that happens to be there.

This clash of mentalities manifests in my person as:

“I’ll care for the communal and public spaces because others have the right to enjoy them as I have”

“I’ll wear a mask in the work space especially after I traveled because I don’t want my coworkers to get involved in My Risky Decisions to get in a plane”

and

“My room looks like a tornado but I fail to comprehend how that affects anyone, my space my mess my problem. Don’t look at it”

“my looks, dressing style and hair is my business I don’t care if it doesn’t fit into what the culture taught you to be feminine/attractive”

My mentality is still mostly collective until it comes to creative expression through the self and personal space, which are things that are inconsequential to the survival of the whole. The problem I have with collectivism is that its in fact cultural, so its informed by the rest of the cultural elements. In my own experience some of said elements are catholicism and evangelicals... you can see where this is going. Yes religion is an important aspect of culture and the collective and theres nothing wrong with that, the problem lies on the exclusion of many individuals. For example back home for a while the catholic church didn’t care much for people who practiced spiritism as an extension of catholicism, they weren't in agreement but they didnt exclude them from the community. I guess this subject manifests in my artwork on how the collective culture treats ppl who diverge from it. They’ll still include you into their space and care for you. They make sure you don’t fall completely off the wagon, but it comes with a mentality of fixing you so you can fit into the collective, similar to an "re-abilitation" but there was nothing wrong in the first place. From my experience the fixing part was very intense until something happened and the family chilled out. Theres still some of it precent but is a lot more subtle.

That being said nothing beats having a community that cares for each other especially when you’re a neurodivergent mess who struggles with keeping up with things. Individualism in contrast shames you when asking for help or for depending in others to keep afloat. individualism is also heavily influenced by capitalist ideals, so I'm having a hard time telling when one starts and the other ends.

I personally don’t know if my experience is just a rural Puerto Rican thing. I dont know how collectivism manifests itself in other cultures especially other island cultures. it still stands that collective mentality is essential in to my rural folk, not only you’re in an island but even further away from most of the population, since they live in the coast. The roads that lead to these mountain towns are a VERY recent addition from a historical point of view so yeah collectivism and giving and receiving from the community was essential.

Idk this tangent went all over the place but yeah its an interesting topic I guess? maybe next time I can go on about the people from the puerto rican country side "Jíbaros", and how they were an exploited agricultural working class, turned cultural icon for consumption, but at the same time mocked and their name became an insult.

I think a lot of this comes down to like... I feel like they forget the audience for the game isn't all just who they themselves are a background of. and its weird because there were spots in FL they have tried for stuff and it hasn't panned out. So i know they are Somewhat Aware (seeing as they have responded to crit ive been involved in about stuff in the past) of other backgrounds playing the game, but they dont seem to write beyond the expectations of this. Which is how you end up with the expectation of building a church and referencing bible stories in the games, intentional or not its likely just being based off of the writers own experiences and knowledge.

Thats the thing like, its a hard balance between having no set expectations for a PC and having some, and it feels like Mask kinda went the worst of both worlds tbh. Like ive been fillin my time with other visual novels in the meantime and they tend to have specific backgrounds in mind for the PCs and work with that, and then allowing you to mold your character around them. (some games even manage to have the church and stuff play a role and still not make assumptions about the PC).

And yea the gender stuff is... kinda weird. These things take very different contexts depending on the gender background of your character, and it seems even less acknowledged in Mask then it is in FL somehow. I understand not wanting to adress some things of the times, but like you said it feels so... awkward with how homophobia is explicitly mentioned tbh. I'm not sure what a solution would be. I know its hard with the variations of how trans people present and the way pronouns vary so much that not everyone could ever possibly be represented, but sometimes I think having genders and backgrounds to choose from and that having a slight influence on dialogue may be the better option. But thats gonna vary between the preferences of each person, idk if theres any real solution here.

(This goes with other aspects too, like antisemitism is very much still referenced in the game but never like... actually explored upon. So this puts it in a weird area.)

All in all I think its a very weird worst of both worlds situation when it comes to defining your PC. its a hard balance, but this is something Visual Novels need to take great care in, and many cames have their own complicated approches to them.

Like i know I already made a post on it but the literal description of the game makes it seem like you can pick who you are!!! ‘who were you before the Fall? Who will you be now?’ sounds nice, but the reality is ‘who will you be’ can only be christian and english. This was an issue I had hoped wouldn’t be carried over as much from Fallen London, but the capability for the suspension of disbelief of being anything else is worse here due to the dialogue. I understand limiting the scope of writing if you feel you are unable to write anything else properly, but this needs to be specified at least in the backgrounds or the description.

 It is always disheartening to be presented with a game that aims to advertise its option of playing as ‘yourself’, which then turns with the expectation of only one type of person. It is a shame the game will not let you be of an  Irish, Jewish, Scottish, etc. background, with the added aspect of those types of characters being present in the game making it all more confounding. Having a diverse cast does not feel as meaningful when the game doesn’t let you, as the player, be a character of your own background.
