idk why this idea’s been running around my head so much but imagine if you will;

Alphonse, Seth, Finn, and Jack discovering that long before they met, their S/O used to be an acrobat/trapeze artist in a circus as a teenager. They loved preforming, and were actually kinda famous for it. But then there was an incident that opened their eyes to the darker side of fame (creepy fans, stalkers, little to no privacy, etc.) so they left after turning 17, deciding that they wanted a simple life going forward.

Maybe the boys find out when they find an old “(Name’s) Final Show” poster and a box full of old photos in the listener’s closet or attic.

This was is the greatest show!

Your boyfriend told you he'd help with spring cleaning your house. Knowing how difficult it could be because of how big it was. Also remembering that the attic was what you really didn't want to do alone.

Going up the later, you both had work cut out for you. So walking around your boyfriend began looking through the boxes. Going to a dark corner, he opened and squinted. Saying hold on he grabbed his phone added the light. Seeing the poser of a Circus "(Name)'s final show!"

Asking out loud about it, making you pause and turn with wide eyes. This made your boyfriend frown, why did you have that reaction? Gently sitting him down on some old furniture you had in the atticr.

You told him your experiance in the Circus. It was fun, exciting and connected you with so many people. However, it was dark, creepy fans trying to get one on one's. Stalkers that ever Circus employee had to deal with. The smidge of privacy you would have, the ring master saying his Circus his rules.

Alphonse

Alphonse was angry. Wishing he'd could go see that Ringmaster and punch him. Glaring at a photo of the old Ringmaster slightly burned from a group photo.

He hugged you saying he wished he met you. Saying he'd would have gotten you out of there.

But that's in the past, Alphonse then looked at the poster. Told you it looked pretty and was glad you got out at 17. You nodded along and leaned against him.

The pinkette then asked about the happy memories you had. Wanting to know about your childhood, if you'll let him!

He smiles as you tell him the tricks you would do as a acrobat/trapeze performer. Al then asks if you think he could be one? Snorting you nod along and kiss him.

Alphonse wonders how you could be so positive. From dealing with all that shit, but he knows your tough. He then asks about if you still have your old costume?

Seth

Seth was frowning as you told him everything. He saw you holding back tears, telling him all of what happened during the Circus.

Holding you, the brunette felt tears come up. Tells you how strong you are, and how he's proud. Looking at the old photos of people you love and worked with.

Kinda wished he never showed you the poster. But, it was inevitable you were gonna see it and then he was. Questions were gonna be asked.

Seth then asks about if any of the old performers talk to you. Getting a smile on your face as you told him everyone exchanges letters. Some use texting and calling when they can.

Asks if you think he could be one of those strong men. Or maybe something different? You giggle before telling him you don't know.

Seth now understood how you could be so calm in a serious situation. How you can sway the conversation to being eased in under a minute. He then asks about any fun memories.

Finn

Finn was silent, listening to you ramble about everything. Then hugged you tight, shaking from either anger or tears he held back.

After calming down he asked how you got out? Telling him that the Ringmaster got arrested so everyone was able to leave.

Jack

Finn felt bad bring up these memories, but you told him that you had good ones too! Not just bad. He smiles as you tell him how everyone in the Circus was like family.

Speaking about the other performers you tell him about their lives now. There was even one in the city you'd meet up with every so often!

Finn can't help but wonder what Circus act he could be if he was in one? Maybe a plant act? You giggle as you tell him that could be possible.

Finn already know your strong, with learning your past he sees why your so outgoing and persistent. Those are the things he loves about you and is happy you made your life better when leaving the Circus.

As you tell him Jack's mind I going a thousand miles per hour. Thinking how you tried so hard to get here now. He hugs you as you explain more.

When you finish Jack asks how you ended up going to this college? He can't help but wonder about the education in the Circus. You tell him one of the strong men was a very smart man and would teach the younger performers.

Jack when hearing about the dark side of the Circus frowned. Glaring at the floor trying to figure out what to say. You told him it's in the past and none of those creeps have tried to find you again.

He felt himself relax when you told him the older performers helped the younger ones file restraining orders so they would be safe. Along with how most of the younger ones went with older ones to stay together and build a new life.

He does asks why you ended up in this city, causing you to shrug and tell him how it was the farthest from the Circus. Jack nods and then asks you about any happy memories you have.

Listening to you reminiscent about the Circus made Jack smile. The fact you can still smile fondly about that place is amazing. He loves how you didn't let your past shape the way you are now. In college getting a degree to do something that won't ruin your mental health.

It’s the middle of the week, have some dancing turtles

Spoilers below as I gush about my Mutant Mayhem Monday experience 🤗 please feel free to gush with me I wanna hear other people’s thoughts too!

First off… When Seth wanted to put the teenager in TMNT he meant it. Like, all the versions act like teenagers, but like Nickelodeon PG stereotypical teens. MM turtles were the realest PG-13 outta pocket 21st century teenagers I’ve ever seen and I love that shit because it’s the first time I actually felt like I was around the kids in middle school and high school again with the way they talk. Kinda appreciate Superfly cussing too? Like idk it’s Ice Cube and this villain goes hard tryna kill some teenage turtles he formally saw as his lil cousins, let the grown mutant cuss

Also uh, was not expecting to be sad so early in the movie? Like I could tell from the trailers it was gon be an emotional rollercoaster but shit like ten minutes in and these turtles are fuckin depressed. And to see it really hit me because in every other version (except for Bayverse) the turtles literally never let not being part of the human world get to them. In the shows especially they’re so well adjusted and never bothered by sticking to the shadows. Then there’s Rise where they pretty much go out whenever they want and indulge in most of the human world stuff they want to. For these guys to be so stunted and desperate to have more freedom was so heart wrenching. Especially when Splinter grounds them for a whole month and the reality sinks in of how much they know the life they want isn’t an option for them

Wasn’t expecting any kind of ship or romance but that crush Leo has on April hit me like truck because…… holy crap the Leo-April pair has never been a thing? On top of that this is only the second on screen black April we’ve seen and I’ve been a Leo kinnie across the board since day one so to see this combo of my favorite character liking a black girl is making me lose my mind 🥲 and like it got me thinking of several of my favorite shows and the single characters I kin in those and if they’ve ever had black love interests and it’s just still not a common normalized thing honestly.

I’m sure a lot of people aren’t excited for the prospect of ships coming back (especially after 2012 scarred us) but as a Leo lover and black girl it got me so excited to see something like this. I’m just hopeful and optimistic they won’t mess it up like a lot of shows do. The “this is just as friends line” already makes me a little worried bc that trope never has a good history but I have faith they’ll handle things tastefully and not make it toxic or messy

I will never understand what made Donnie laugh so hard at the name Nardo other than it being because it’s his sibling and that it bothers Leo lmao

All imma say about the puke scene is that I’m glad I heard an “out of context” spoiler about it bc I knew exactly when to look away and I’m glad I did bc the scene lasted for so long??? 😀❓But hey at least I had Unwritten to listen too while I was sparing my eyes 😂

The sequence of them going around and shaking down those gangs and Superfly’s connections. BAD. ASS. And each of them got their own moments to shine? Loved it. Like they each even got to take point and have their moments where they got to kick in the door lol. And the fight scenes were just, muah. Chef’s kiss, they all looked amazing taking grown ass adults down together

Okay Splinter definitely gets the best dad award for putting together that little surprise party, with all the celebrity Chris’s and pretending to wait on them 🥺 so pure. It did make me sad the guys immediately left and you can just see such a sad dejected look on Splinter’s face, knowing he can’t provide what his kids really want or make them happy enough without it 🥲 At the very least they say thanks and that they appreciate but I would’ve at least stayed for a lil bit and gone along with it, Splinter just looked so excited about it and it was so sweet 😭

And he doesn’t even get upset though he knows they’re hiding something, he just says he’ll help them if they’ve gotten into trouble, which is something I’m sure almost every kid has wanted instead of having the kind of relationship where they’re more scared of telling their parents they messed up instead of handling it on their own

I love how musical Superfly’s family is 😂 Ray Filet just starts sing-introducing his name and Mondo and the other couple mutants when they drive with in the car trying to find music they could all sing to together 🥹 not to mention the musical references Superfly makes later that I’ll get to. “Kinda don’t wanna murder everyone on Earth, I just kinda wanna sing” Me too bruh.

Raph immediately going “goochi goochi goo” and playing peekaboo with Genghis frog is so underrated that boy has such a soft side he’s not even that afraid of showing at times, and maybe it’s continuing the trope of Raph having a soft spot for pets/animals? Who knows 😌

Yo I was kinda shook when that government guy knocked Leo out and he just fell unconscious on the ground 😶 Like we’re used to seeing the authorities be brutal especially in movies like this but that’s a whole teenager? You just assaulted a minor? 🙂 Crazy

Also I know it’s sad they got captured and drained painfully but Mikey in that scene was hilarious 😂 like even the way he was dramatically crying and Leo was just started to cry with him like “iM sO sOrRy mIkEeEeEy! 😭” gold. When one of his children is hurting Leo hurts too. One of my favorite moments 🤣

They literally started singing BTS while being tortured they’re so unserious but like in a serious way to them and I love it. Also the fact that they did it just to make Donnie feel better? So pure. Like Raph of all turtles offered to sing while being drained of blood (bc I refuse to use the m word 💀)

The way Splinter snuck in and soloed literal government soldiers single handedly? Badass. Never loved seeing a Splinter save his sons so much 🥹

Oml they’re so puuuuure 😭 I really thought this was gonna be a moment where the guys invite them all to come live with them and Splinter was gonna be like ‘aha 😬 whoa slow down there’ but damn nah he was just as enthusiastic as them inviting all those mutants to come live in their home forever “The more the merrier!” Like ugh he just loves finding family like Baxter Stockman and we see where the guys got their loving nature from 🥹

The amount of his soul Mikey put into that BROSEEEPH was so real like I’ve never heard the name broseph be said in any other way, I’m so glad they put that moment in there

Oml superfly’s a Broadway baby 🤗 he’s a big bad villain marching through time square and talking about King Kong but he’s fill gonna nerd out and make his musical theatre references 😂

I love the Leo Raph dynamic in this movie. Like they don’t always agree or understand each other but they will show love towards one another and show mutual appreciation

Something about any of the turtles shells cracking always gets to me for some reason like those are some serious permanent injuries so I want to see if they do anything special with that in the sequel or show maybe 🤔 And I couldn’t tell if all of theirs cracked or just one, and if so which turtle it was. I think Leo or Raph. I feel like it was Leo but Raph’s are also starting to have a trend of getting cracks in their shells so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also I do not want to judge what other people like to wear but why are Raph and Donnie the only normal dressed ones 😭 like Mikey looks like he’s going on vacation and Leo looks like he’s going to clock in at Best Buy 😂 tell me it’s because they have limited resources for clothes lmao. HE’S LITERALLY WEARING A LANYARD

Them taking off the masks was crazy honestly… like them deciding not to wear them made my brain pause until I realize they’re kids going to school now and not being ninjas all the time… they don’t need them anymore. I’m just so pleased with the fact that this movie was willing to do what all other iterations weren’t. I see why they’re getting a sequel and show already, these guys and the plot development deserve so much more exploration

Maybe I missed something in the beginning but I’m wondering where Stockman went. Like is he still in custody? Did he die? Because not seeing him again that’s what I assumed but we only saw him get arrested or whatever, so if anything I don’t get why Superfly and the others wouldn’t try to break him out 🤔 I was surprised they didn’t make him a villain though, but I’m pretty happy about him getting to be a more optimistic kind character tho

SHREDDER HAD ME SHOOK LIKE THE ARMOR ALREADY LOOKED SO COOL AND I WAS NOT EXPECTING THEM TO GET THE BIG BAD INVOLVED AHHHH I’M SO READY TO SEE THEM REACT TO THIS ANGRY GIANT TIN CAN

Although I do wonder if Shredder’s gonna have some personal gripe with them since they have a different backstory he doesn’t seem to be a part of. And shit now that they’re public and in school it’s gonna be so much easier for him to go after them 😅 pluses and minuses…

The soundtrack: golden. Cultured. Nothing but range. Goes from a 90’s rap song to Natasha Bedingfield’s soulful 2000’s song. Most movies only ever have all pop mainstream songs or only rap songs because they think they can’t mix but MM does it effortlessly. The turtles are so versatile not just with music genres but they make old and new references ‘cause they’re well rounded kings 💪🏽 Between rizz, Adele, broski, Hey Arnold, K-Pop, Ferris Bueller, etc… I mean Donnie’s literally doing the sprinkler and the funky chicken in that gif up top 😂 they’re born in 2008 I doubt any kids today know about those dances anymore

Clearly I have all the thoughts and feelings about these boys and the movie, but I think this is probably my favorite TMNT movie? I’ve loved all of them but I think this one definitely brings me the most comfort fr

ohhhh hmmm i think tamsyn is a talented writer with a fun style who’s clearly done her time in the trenches of fandom space and is therefore understandably uninterested in engaging in certain elements of it. just being honest i don’t know much about her personally and frankly i don’t think i’m all that interested in knowing much about her! like she’s fine ig. i’m not saying death of the author or anything i just don’t think about her too much tbqh!

that said i think her ability to layer things in-text so that each subsequent reread is more intriguing than the last is really interesting, and while her prose is not my favorite (i think that really might go to seth dickinson honestly) among contemporary authors i think she really does have a certain je ne sais quois about the way she writes that wraps you up and doesn’t let you go, and then the book is finished. i think she’s got a dab hand at fleshing character dynamics out farther than any other author i can think of — it really does get complicated and i enjoy the way she complicates it even if in fandom these dynamics also get pared down for the sake of easy shippability or w/e (general statement not meant to be applied to any one ship just so we’re clear; the blorbofication of any little guy is inevitable in fan spaces and i get that)

if i had one major critique i really don’t love how tamsyn handles character descriptions especially pertaining to her nonwhite chars; i know gideon was published around a time when there was a lot of conversation around white authors and how they deal with race (for anyone wondering and about to send an ask about it i have seen the naberius tern monitor lizard post many times), and while i know she’s specified how she envisioned characters outside of the books i wish those descriptions were made manifest in the text more often. it could also be that some of that has to do with writing style and how she likes to approach things and maybe publisher interference or whatever idk but it leaves a gross taste in my mouth that i’ve talked about in private spheres before.

i really enjoy her stuff overall — i’ve read a few things written by her outside of the locked tomb and i think she’s a skilled writer and the way she establishes her worldbuilding is definitely fun in that it lets people sort of grab it by the horns and go crazy without like. authorial interference if that makes sense. like i enjoy the lack of clarity and rules to a degree and i think it takes a certain finesse to be able to do that without having the books feel messy or inconsistent

Fascinated by Cody Rhodes, The Rock, Seth Rollins and Roman Regin's dynamic. Especially after Monday Raw.

It seems that Rock has devolved respect/hate dynamic with Cody, but the line 'Champion or not, I am coming back for you' makes it seem a little obsessive. Kinda like Roman losing WrestleMania because he couldn't let his grudge with Seth go, which could become a interesting parallel. (IDK what to do with 'Don't break my Heart')

We haven't seen much form Reigns since Mania so we have no clue how he is feeling. I can see a Face run starting with a Road to Redemption kinda dealio but honestly, I think he is going to be dedicated to getting revenge on Seth and Cody. We don't know if his relationship with the Rock and the blood line got soured because of his loss but it is a possibility which makes more interesting ideas.

Cody hasn't mentioned Seth, even though the guy saved his red and white butt at Mania which could hint at a heel turn for either of them. If Seth becomes the Heel he's probably aiming to take Cody's tile since he feels unappreciated for his help at Mania while Cody is trying to apologize. If Cody becomes the Heel and goes back to bisexual menace days, I can see him trying to go for more power but isolating himself form others at the earliest sigh of questioning him which would lead to people trying to take his title for his own sake and because he is being a dick.

If the Rock comes back to Heel!Cody then we could ether see Rock turning Face to help the others bring Cody down or the Rock and Cody team up to cause some major havoc or just two super powerful heels running amuck. If Rocky comes back to Heel!Seth then we might see him helping Seth take down Cody which might parrel Roman and Seth's old dynamic.

Roman depending on ether becoming a worse heel or turning face could interact very interestingly with either Heel or Face Cody.

Heel!Cody + Face!Roman could be Roman trying to help Cody avoid the mistakes he made during his Regin, maybe he doses the thing where he never gives up on Cody and they do 'Disgraced Champions' bit much much later down the line. Or Roman fixing his past relationships and working with the others to take down Cody and prove himself a change man.

Face!Cody + Face!Roman might be a story about forgiveness and when it is okay to forgive someone, but this is WWE, so I find that kind of unlikely. Well, make if Roman gets all self-sacrificial about it.

Heel!Cody + Heel!Roman makes mayhem where people have to choose between two controlling bastards who hate each other's guts. Or they could team up and just become the most powerful team in all of the WWE and dominate.

Face!Cody + Heel!Roman = Roman wants vengeance, Cody Rhodes is Cody Rhodes about it. Mostly just the status quo.

I have so many more thoughts, I'll probably make a PT2 later. Asks are open blah blah.

I am very interested to hear what others think, what options they want, why and what they actually think will happen. Do you have any theories?

ok Exordia review time (not spoiler free!) since i finished it a few days ago. this is long and rambling and unedited.

4/5 i love Seth's writing and im glad they got to play with scifi again BUT i think they needed a better editor OR to split it more cleanly into sections- in one of the interviews they said it was originally a series of novellas each from a single POV, and i think the constraint of that would have made it a much tighter story.

one of the best things about their Destiny lore is how much they do with so little- thinking of this section from the Beyond Light CE:

Disaster at the worksite. Clearly we will not be moving Clarity Control like we did the K1 artifact. It reacted violently to the attempt. I have entered 19 casualties into the log, since 19 engineers from the Hannu team were caught in its reaction...though there were many more than 19 bodies when it was finished. I have sequestered the recordings. Especially the sensorium telemetry. Quite upsetting. Yet I do not believe it was an act of hostility. Even this outburst carried themes of duplication...as if Clarity Control wanted to show it could help me.

which i was originally thinking of as a first run at Blackbird, but i think these may have been simultaneous? i'm not actually sure. i know Exordia was started after the first Baru book was published, but i'm not sure how much lead time there is for the CEs.

or the clarity of Unveiling compared to a lot of what felt like similar ideas that took much longer to get thru in Exordia. primes. pink noise. math. alright lets fucking gooo oh wait. five more pages of ethics first. okay sure i'll do that for ya Seth bc i love your prose. which also. a) conway game of life mentioned!!! b) this part from Exordia made me LOSE MY MIND:

at the same time, idk what i would remove- at very few points was i reading something that dragged, with the exception of spending a LOT of time with Erik and Clayton in the middle (this is when i put the book down for a month and a half or so). and i know so many people were like sickos.jpg about them However their dynamic did sooo little for me and i don't think Rosamaria was given enough time on the page (and i think having her Be the ship was weird- i recognize that Blackbird needs to have a voice to make the plot go, but i don't think this was the best or neatest way to do it, and collapsed a lot of what i found fundamentally so interesting about Blackbird into something akin to a standard scifi Ship AI).

again i think the restriction of each section of the story being from a single POV might have been the restriction needed to end up with a tighter story- at no point were the multiple plot threads & POVs confusing, per say, but i'm not sure what the structure did for the story bc we could switch to whoever could tell us the most about what was happening whenever convenient, instead of having to piece things together from a limited POV. i'm thinking again of the BLCE, this time the part where Clovis is talking about Maya Sundaresh behaving erratically- i'm no Ishtar group expert but i believe we are supposed to put together that these are all different iterations of her from within the garden). oh- i also wonder if Aixue and Chaya are another run at Maya and Chioma to some degree...

anyway. i also think i am also less the target audience for this book because seth loooves their trolley problems and i simply do not have the patience for it! i loved the hard scifi and the first contact aspects and the character work (Seth's character work is, as always, spectacular. their characters always feel deeply real and flawed in very human ways, while still being exaggerated in the ways characters have to be to function as plot fulcrums), but this isnt something like Baru where i can be like yes you should read this to everyone i talk to.

I think the language in the book is DELIGHTFUL, as always, especially how Seth plays with the idea of an alien translator that sometimes can get an English equivalent to something and sometimes can't! i think that's very fun. because it's on my mind bc ive been listening to the Shelved by Genre episodes on it, it makes me think of Book of the New Sun, and how the "translator" figure of G.W. talks about picking words that are close but they aren't being used like we would use them now- e.g. "metal" in BotNS isnt the same thing we think of as metal! its used more broadly! but its close enough in purpose and point to work just fine. the destriers have horns. i need to know if Seth has read these books.

but back to Exordia. here are some specific prose parts i fucking loved.

this part of the full-page loving, detailed, and technical description of 40 alien nukes detonating in atmosphere:

In the band of thickening atmosphere twenty-five to thirty-five kilometers above the Earth, these gamma rays slam into atoms of oxygen and nitrogen, stripping their orbiting electrons. The orphaned electrons hurtle away at 90 percent of lightspeed. They want to go in a straight line, but hold on now, it's not so easy to leave home. Earth's magnetic field bends their course. They begin to spiral down. When an electron moving near lightspeed has to turn, it emits synchrotron radiation. Poison light. And beneath each bomb there are 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 electrons swerving at once. The result is a blast of electromagnetic noise. No: not noise. A coherent pulse, spiking and faling in harmony. Shiva's own beat drop on electrical civilization. An EMP.

This part. i love Anna and wish we got more of her.

He gives her back her Glock. She accepts it with resignation. "You'd better get your men ready," she says. "It's going to be bad." "Women too," he says, trying for lightness. "The pilot's a woman. We've got a female forward surgeon, a psyops lead, a linguist- she's pretty badass, ran with SEALs in Afghanistan. And Lt. Gainer, she might have some advice for-" "For what?" Anna says calmly. "Advice for what, Erik? How to get killed in a feminine way?"

Seth has such a good and specific way of writing metaphors. a little bit Douglas Adams:

The upshot is: the air around the engine exhaust beam explodes outward with a sound like a tuning fork hit by a Space Shuttle launch. Lung-jellying power. Anything in the beam path suffers the short, severe influence of a needle faster and hotter than a vajra thunderbolt. Anything around the beam eats fireball.

& this part. again. i wish more of the book was Anna and Ssrin's fucked up kismessitude. or whatever.

She slides the barrel of the weapon into the uppermost crater on Ssrin's spine. hello! havent done these in a while. im currently "extremely unemployed" lol well see if i go back and do any of the previous months i skipped ㄟ( ▔, ▔ )ㄏ i think its nice to force myself to summarize my thoughts like this

BOOKS: the tyrant baru cormorant by seth dickinson: most recent book in the masquerade series, which is a thriller (?) about the mechanics of empire. dude this book was so great. no notes. there were some incredibly gratifying payoffs in here and some craaazy twists. idk i wish i had something more to say i just thought it was really really good im glad that baru gets to have some good things as well as bad. of course, seth dickinson has amazing prose and the ending was so like, uplifting? and inspiring? i was very surprised lol

when the angels left the old country by sacha lamb: queer jewish immigrant YA, apparently for fans of good omens. an angel and a demon from a small, small town go to america to track down one of the town's mising daughters. despite neither being a gomens fan (although i did read it) nor jewish, i really enjoyed this! it has a dreamy, fairytale, eva ibbotson-like tone to it that made it a pleasure to read, despite the somewhat foreboding topic (let's all have a fun time on ellis island while visibly jewish!) the stories of the humans and the non-humans feel equally important, but i really especially enjoyed the way the angel changed over time as a response to the world it saw. its just a really nice book :3

long live evil by sarah rees brennan: villainess isekai, but western tradpub. a woman dying from cancer at a young age is given the chance to live again--as a two-bit floozy villainess the day before her execution?! how will rae find a way out? and how well, really, does she remember the time of iron? sarah rees brennan is sort of a comfort author to me; in other lands meant a Lot to me as a mentally ill teenager. all the same, i almost dropped this book during the first couple of chapters. in my opinion, this book has a REALLY rough start that evened out into a ride that i enjoyed quite a bit despite many other factors. while some parts of the part are clearly deeply personal (this is the author's first book published after recovering from late stage cancer), it also has a tendency to hammer in its points over and over again and undercuts too many serious moments with quippy dialogue in a way that deflates tension rather than increasing it. also, one b-couple takes clear inspiration from one of her previous works (but this time more #toxic --they kill each other in time of iron) and as a result unfortunately outshines the main couple at times, who also have to share screentime with a huge cast that often feels improperly balanced. but also, i thought the main couple was pretty cute, actually! the ending twist, while not unpredictable (and also very, uh, danmei?) was also very enjoyable and nice to let creep up on you. i feel like i'm being more strict with it than i am with a lot of villainess isekai i read though, haha… i agree with ineedacatchyname's review of it (and a lot of these thoughts just echo theirs. woops!)--a lot of this could be fixed with a bit more editing, but ultimately i spent the second half unable to put it down and i'm still going to read the sequel.

against football by steve almond: fairly short nonfiction. one diehard football fan's searing condemnation of the state of american football today (and what we could do to make it better). this was recommended to me by megafaunatic, and i really enjoyed it :3 i come from a pretty "ugh, sportsball" type of family, and so it was really interesting to see why people love watching football (especially a team as "wretched" as the former oakland raiders) as well as playing it--but also how the continuation of football in its current state is pretty much inexcusable (one bright side is that division i graduation rates have actually gone up quite a bit since this book was published in 2016!) id easily recommend to both football fans and non-fans.

GAMES: pikmin bloom: pikmin bloom is a game about walking around, growing pikmin, and planting virtual flowers. i didnt play this game for a while bc i was like "well, its pokemon go but with pikmin -_-" and like. it is. but niantic has also taken the opportunity to overhaul a lot of its base game mechanics with a focus on actually getting you to GO OUTSIDE and WALK AROUND, which i think is to its benefit! like, yeah it actually did get me to go on some walks when i wouldnt have otherwise. the microtransactions kinda suck but as long as youre willing to kill your darlings (pikmin) its fine i think. < guy with a very high deathcount in pikmin 3 and 4

return of the obra dinn: stylized mystery game about unpacking what happened in a scaaary voyage by seeing the moment surrounding the crewmembers' deaths. dude. this game is so fucking good. it was like everyones goty in 2018 and as soon as i finished it i was like "i wish i could get hit in the head so i could play it again." imo, its a really good game to play as a group (with one person driving) bc so much of the gameplay takes place outside of the game--deducing, speculating, etc and it's really fun to do that as a conversation with someone else! the game does a good job of disincentivizing random guessing--when i played this game with my family, we did guess on a couple but it was almost always a 50-50 "choice A or choice B". and the game can (apparently) be completed without any chance guesswork whatsoever! can be a little gory at times, but its all in this sort of dithery monochrome style so you don't really think about it until you're walking to the bathroom in the halflit moonlight and youre kinda like hey this kinda looks like return of the obra dinn haha. wait. anyways play this game!!

unpacking: cute little game about unpacking/moving in during the various phases of one person's life. probably a masterclass in "environmental storytelling" that invites you into making your own stories for our unseen protagonist while also providing these understated beautiful little moments of understanding. also, it was really theraputic getting everything perfectly placed in order when i currently live in a very messy house ;-_-

umineko chapter 2: ahhh year of umineko 2024 continues. im definitely not finishing the whole game this year (lol) but i might end up finishing the question arcs at least..? anyways ive been lbing this the whole time (#year of the seacat 2024 for blacklist) but man this was pretty harsh compared to the first episode. it even makes battler break down..! i was secretly wondering how it was going to try and turn around my opinion on rosa, but, well, i still really dont like her. has bright points in more beatrice!!! the introduction of the meta, some ???really horny??? parts and the [You are incompetent] scene. also, everyone seems to really hate george for some reason but i feel like i still dont get it.

SHOWS:

the decameron: drama about fucking and dying in black plague-era italy, and a villa meant to be a getaway from it all. in high school i wanted to read the decameron because it was mentioned in theatre of coolty--just so you know, this is nothing like it. its just really fun! and full of light intrigue and twists and reveals and tragedy. a lot of the plague-based humor hit in some pretty uncomfortable places, which the showrunners were definitely going for. neifile and panfilo hands down had my favorite relationship.

witch from mercury: revolutionary girl gundam?? this is how everyone pitched it to me, which honestly put me off a little bit. wfm is clearly aware and respectful of its predecessors but also takes the first episode to go "nah were going to do something a little different though." like, its kind of like instead of tackling rape culture it decided to tackle the military industrial complex instead ? ? i guess?? it seems like a good entry point into gundam for many (including me!) i enjoyed the first season very fun and currently watching the second. looking forward to seeing how sick and twisted things can get

in terms of music ive been listening to a lot of zerobaseone.. every time were in the car together neil is like lets listen to yurayura and im like yessss. yurayuraa oh ive also been listening to counter//weight while driving but im not going to include it bc its been slow going lol. all my thoughts about it so far is like "this is the thing neil really likes"

Writer Q&A Tag Game

Hello. I got tagged for this by @squarebracket-trick on this post and I thought it sounded super fun. So, here we are!

1. What motivates you to write?

I started out as an artist, but I began writing once I realized that visual art as a medium wasn't enough to tell the stories I wanted to tell - it had no way of codifying lore, defining character traits, or even just easily telling a long story. I think it's still largely that, in a way. I come up with all these stories and I "get them out" through writing because I sure as hell can't keep them inside my brain for eternity.

2. A line/short snippet of your writing that you are most proud/happy of. If not maybe share a line of someone else's work you love (just please credit them)

This one is pretty recent, from a few chapters ago in DoS, but I'm really proud of it. I just feel like it emphasizes how much Seth's experience with souls connects with the body, which is the Goddess of Time's domain. A lot of metaphors in this story centre around bodies and physicality because of this. Here's the snippet:

And yet, there was Theo, with her soul so unwound there was no fixing it anymore. The most she could do was keep healing and healing, covering the cracks of the bowl with her own hands in the hope that they'd go back to normal. Keep filling the ocean so that, no matter how many holes lined its bed, it would never be empty. [...] She held her so tight she thought her hands would fuse to her skin. As if she could cover the cracks of her soul with her own body.

Idk, I just vibe with it.

5. What part of writing do you think you are the best at? (Yes stroke your own ego it's okay)

I'd say back-and-forth banter, probably because of my time in theatre, but also horror description. It creeps up on me. I keep writing horror on accident. And I always really like it. Just something about describing something weird and spooky.

6. What do you enjoy most about the Writeblr community?

Mostly the fact that there's all these other writers who have cool stuff and also wanna see my cool stuff. I already loved writing on my own, but knowing that there are people Out There who also care about my stories just feels amazing.

And also, the casual friendship between people. You interact with someone's blog, they interact with yours, and you suddenly feel like you're friends, kinda. I can only compare it to making quick friends with someone on the playground as a kid. I like it <3

7. A writing tool/device you use that helps you with writing? (It could be speech-to-text, a writing program etc)

I am a very ✨analogue✨ person, so my best writing advice in this scenario is always: put that shit on paper.

Feel unsure about a scene? Put that shit on paper. It's like a 0.5th (hehe "halfth") draft that you will copy onto your document and you will always improve it with that second look.

Worried about perfectionism? Put that shit on paper. Even pencil, at least to me, feels hard to erase. It's mostly about living with the stuff you've written and not looking back - erasing is such a pain in the ass that you might as well just keep going forward.

Wanna write secretly during class/lectures/whatever where you're not allowed to have a device? Wadda ya know, the answer is also paper.

Wanna edit? Printing stuff out helps you get some distance from your own writing and it also makes you see it more as a book than as just something you've made.

It also generally makes you feel less bad about changing stuff later in the document, because you have a solid, physical record of what you've written before.

Put that shit on paper. It works well.

8. A piece of worldbuilding that you like in your own story? (It could be the magic system, a particular place in the story, a law etc)

I once made a post about the art movements in the world of the dystopia WIP (yes, seriously) but I can't find it anymore. I'm not gonna explain it again, it was stupidly long the first time around.

I guess, outside the dystopia WIP, I'm pretty proud of the whole Three Sister Goddesses thing from DoS. I have drawn designs, but I'll make another post sometime. I'm also proud of the relationship between the Goddesses tho.

They're at war with each other, but they're just doing it for entertainment. They kiiiinda hate each other but not as much as their desire to have fun. Like, they will send their daughters to decimate each other's armies, but they'll also hang out together in the Plane of the Gods. The war is kind of like a decades-long game of Monopoly they're having at the family function. And I just think it's cool. Goes into that whole thing about mortals being like ants to uncaring gods that I like.

9. What piece of advice would you say to encourage others to write if they are having a rough patch?

Kinda cliché, but I'd say this: it happens to everyone, dude (gender neutral). Everyone has periods of time when they feel bad and can't write. Or where they feel like their writing is terrible. Doesn't make you less of a writer.

Even if you're not as productive as other people: who cares, honestly? As long as you're having a good time and doing something you love, it doesn't matter how much time you need or don't need to finish something. Even if you never finish anything. And if you feel like you're not as good as other people: who cares either, you know? Everybody starts somewhere. And everybody has different strengths. You'll get better. You always do.

At the end of the day, we're all just doing this because we love it. Don't force yourself. The time will pass anyway.

I was brainstorming before I go to sleep and I was just thinking that if bloodline is say not able to sort out their buisness till SummerSlam who does Roman face then?

Tbh I want Seth to be back in the fray, he was and is Roman's original problem and as much as I love Ro I want him to suffer Seth's antics. With the bloodline obviously falling apart Mr. visionary's mind games is the last thing he needs and I want it to be the only constant he has.

Like come on make it happen hunter I want Roman to suffer a Seth Rollins.

Another interesting thing would be how Solo deals with it, when Seth plays he plays well and knowing that Roman is having control issues he is definetly try to get under Solo's skin too which he can succeed in bcz its what he does best, get under people's skin.

Another thing I though abt is what is Solo is drafted off? Which is a very minor possibility but it can happen and it can leave Roman with the usos and once again another opening for Seth to invite himself to the family drama.

Or if Usos do get drafted to RAW and fall under Seth's games cutting them off Roman which will piss the big guy off.

I like the idea of ​​Seth and Roman facing each other again because kind of like with the rivalry between Roman and Brock, Seth has always been his rival. No matter how different their paths have been or where they are now, there has always been rivalry between them. They call out each other even when there's no possibility of them being face to face, it's something they naturally have because they started their careers together and many of the steps that made them who they are now, have done with each other. So yeah, I love the idea of ​​them.

Was coding SeTT when many burst into my mindspace looking for healing. The doctors healed as many as possible and then the Liew witchy 6 made their appearance with their brand of pouncing on thoughts and striking multiple people, joined together, who have skeletons in their closets.

I made a stand against them and they seem to be on the backfoot at the moment. Took my meds early. Tomorrow, will be heading out on a long walk. Was able to run earlier in the afternoon. Had ramen for dinner. Tastes good with pressed garlic, olive oil, and a bit of Japanese soy.

The plot for ACT 2 of “Inexact Science” is rather hazy still. IDK how to write 5k of interesting words on a world rebuilding effort. Maybe Seth dies or is presumed dead -that would be a conflict point -that he’s missing and many pine for him.

So I watched the mario movie and here are my thoughts. I really fucking loved the movie and was a lot better than anticipated. Some stuff I wasnt a huge fan of but like, it's still just more of a kids movie. I loved I thought it was really enjoyable, but felt a bit rushed at parts and at some points it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Overall I had a great time and am probably going to rewatch it for all the details and Easter eggs.

The trailer

Some things in the movie were noticeably different from the trailers that we had seen. Some scenes and lines were different. What I noticed is the things that the trailers received backlash on were either changed or fully removed, like Chris Pratt's voice at some points. Like the "wahoo" he does in the trailer is different, it was a lot better executed in the movie. And some lines like the "let's a go" that people hated were fully removed. I think it's p obvious why these things got changed.

The voices:

Okay so, Chris Pratt is a bad actor and a terrible voice actor, but I'm going to be very honest with you all, it's horrible at first but after like 5 minutes you get used to and don't notice it anymore. He doesn't sound like himself too much, bit of an accent twinge which is already a lot more than I expected tbh. It's fine, but at some moments you are horribly reminded that picking Chris Pratt was not a good choice.

Jack Black was amazing as bowser, though I felt like his voice could have been a bit lower and a bit more grovelly.

I'm personally not a big fan of anna taylor joy, and I really don't think her voice fitted peach. Like with peach I'm more used to her high pitched and I feel like Anna's voice was too low. Too "" basic white girlie"" idk how else to explain it.

Charlie Day as Luigi was fine, though I felt like he could have been more Luigi-er. Like it would've been amazing with just a biiiit more effort.

Some of the voices for the characters just.. Didn't fit to me. Like cranky kong or that one toad with the really low voice.

Seth Rogen as DK was surprisingly great! And yes, he did do the laugh!

Easter eggs, details and small bits:

Omg there were so many cool Easter eggs and details referring to like Nintendo stuff and Mario's history like wrecking crew, jumpman, punch out, duck hunt etc. And the scenes were filmed with SO much detail holy shit! I am so going to rewatch it so I can spot everything bit by bit.

I really liked some references to like the DK song and everything. For someone who like grew up with mario it was soo cool!

Some stuff I didn't quite like:

One thing i didnt like is how small the roles were for like luigi, Pauline and foreman spike. The way spike was announced made me thing that he had a bigger role in the mario origins but nah he was in like 3 scenes and that's it. But disappointed. And once again they did my boy luigi dirty, like he didnt really have a lot of screentime. I get you can't do much when you're Captured but also like come on man... And Pauline only had like.. 1 line. I expected a bit more of that.

Some stuff or scenes didn't really make sense to me, like the whole dog fighting scene and adding Mario's family,,, like?? I don't get it. I also thought the jumpman at the arcade was related to mario as a small nod the way donkey and cranky kong are father and son but making him a random stranger felt weird?? And suddenly giving the bros a full family also just... Felt wrong!

Also personally am not a fan of the 'bowser wants to marry peach' plot that some of the games and now the movie uses

One hand I liked how many references to the games they made but on the other hand it felt like they wanted to reference everything in a very short amount of time? Felt a bit too much or rushed at some point but I still appreciated it. Like the little bloopers were so cute!!

Mario calling luigi lou is adorable! And the toads were cute af too!

And they way they turned iconic mario songs into like cinematic tuned was great!

The jokes were funny, but you gotta keep in mind that it's a movie rated for everyone including kids right.

I love! The personality that they gave donkey Kong, it's different from what I know about him, but I'm glad they didn't make him into a brainless smash monkey lol.

Overall, it really wasn't as bad as people were going to say it was. Yes, it could have been a lot better, but it also could have been a lot worse. I really enjoyed and was so excited and pimped, and still am, after seeing it. It was great!

For playable characters I feel like it's gonna be Oz bc he looks really cool! I can see him possibly romancing Scott (Loves a himbo), Damien (Everyone loves a bad boy Boo!), Polly (She looks nice!), and maybe Zoe (idk she a freak I fuck w that)

But I feel like he'd probably stick to like the same few romances but doing different decisions to see what happens. Is laughing at all the crazy shit he gets pulled into bc of these romancing characters he choose.

I can see him picking Brian as his playable character. He's a bit heartbroken he couldn't be a cryptic, but also wanted to try and be kinda true to him? I can see him romancing everyone at least once. Doesn't really have a preference.

I think he'd love the concept of the game since its really well thought out! He loves the multiple endings you can get and might try and get a few before deciding he's done.

Charlie

Mf saw Ox and was like lol that's me. I can see him liking Damien (He's hot, like literally), Scott (honestly crush me w those arms), and Vera (okay yes I loved to be dommed stop laughing Cas!)

Likes how the art style is, I feel like he tries and friends Liam. Reminds him of someone he knows, also likes Polly she's really cool. Some scene's of the game made him go wide eyed like woah okay so that happened-

Chooses to play Oz, he likes how the guy has lil shadow creatures around him! For trying to romance I can see Damien (Okay yes, Sunflower it's cliche but yeah..), Scott (he seems really nice!) and maybe Calculester (is it weird bc he's a robot?..Computer?)

Gasps and wide eyed at how some of the people act. Like how Miranda who seems so nice is from a tyrant family?? Along with how she treats the people who follower her around basically doing everything fore her??

Has placed as every playable character for fun and romanced every single romancible character. Except Liam, reminds him too much of Auron and is just....no....

I feel like he really likes Vera how headstrong she is a headstrong woman. Also kinda likes Zoe bc she kinds reminds him of himself.

Auron

Looks at the playable characters and picks Brian. Thinks he looked similar enough to him. Doesn't really care for these types of games so he just goes where ever his choices takes him.

I can see him romancing Vera (She knows what she wants and I respect that), Polly (She seems nice I wonder why she parties so much?) and Calculester (I kind of like him). I can see him after a while of just having the game play the other routes just once. I can see him kinda liking Liam

Idk if I’m allowed to say that Kevin is an underrated character. I really don’t think I am. But if I was allowed to say that I WOULD. I am so very passionate about Kevin I would absolutely die for him and he’s not even real. So let’s talk about his hand.

Can you even begin to imagine what was going through Kevin’s head that night? It looked like practice, then The Master talking about potential, then Riko is mad, then pain and blood and how do I get out of here? Then is it worth it if my life is over?

I think there probably was a minute where Kevin sat alone, covered in his own blood, just thinking there was no point in being alive anymore. His playing hand didn’t really look like a hand anymore, his life and reputation and everything he had worked for just pumping out of his hand and staining his shirt. He didn’t remember passing out but when he came to Riko was gone, and his body was running on fumes trying to keep the pain from overwhelming his system. He probably threw up, all over the locker room, his blood trickling through the tiles, the echo of his own screams ringing through his ears like a non-stop siren. He probably couldn’t really see properly for a little bit and he probably couldn’t move for a while, either. Riko was a foot shorter than him, but he made up for that difference by channeling every ounce of anger and jealousy he felt for Kevin into his feet to stomp the shit out of Kevin’s hand until he knew he would never play again. Jean found Kevin not long later, maybe a couple minutes, or an hour. Kevin begged him to get Riko out of his room. Jean wrapped Kevin’s hand up as best he could, and promised him to deal with it as long as Kevin was there when he got back. Jean had figured he was a flight risk, and knew if Kevin left, Riko’s French personal punching bag would come in handy to take out all his egotistical frustration on. Kevin promised he’d be there when Jean came back. Jean came back to his jacket and wallet missing, a tiny scrap of paper left on the bed, an almost illegible ‘sorry’ scrawled across it. He burned it in the bathroom sink before Riko could find it.

So Kevin’s in his car, and he’s driving. He doesn’t know where yet, and man, is he a hazard. Twice on his journey he nearly knocked out behind the wheel, his head bobbing as the pain begged his body to sleep. He probably had to pull over a couple times to be sick, or to have a panic attack, or both. I know he went through the stages of grief on that drive to Virginia. He probably turned on his radio at some point and laughed, how ridiculous he looked, how dangerous it was to be driving one handed. It took him double the amount of time it would normally have because he just. Had to keep stopping. There’s no way he made that journey in a solid drive.

But also I think he probably didn’t have a plan before he was driving. He knew the Southeastern district were holding the Christmas banquet that night, but that was a secondary thought. His first worry was getting out of the nest. His second worry was whether he was going to kill himself or not. The reason he didn’t just do it? David. The thing that pulled Kevin back off that metaphorical ledge was Coach David Wymack. The only other people who knew about his moms letter were Tetsuji, Jean and Riko. Kevin knew well that none of them would be calling up to break the news to Wymack if he died, and David would grow old and die without ever having known that Kevin Day was his son. David was the reason he was risking everything on busy streets and highways and whatever roads he drove too fast or too slow on.

So, he’s in Virginia without a plan. He doesn’t know what hotel David’s in, if he’s even still in Virginia, if the foxes even bothered to show up. So he looks at as many hotels as he could find. He narrows down the list by looking at the ones he knew the Class I teams frequented, and he called the all pretending to be David, looking for his rooms number. After the fifth call he found it.

Small whimpers into chesty, heaving, heavy cries, his body teetering on the edge of a panic attack. David had seen his foxes in bad ways before. He’d seen one of his kids convulsing on a stretcher after an accidental overdose, or a fox who’d choked on their own vomit after an intentional one. He’d seen his foxes in their worst moments, panic attacks and withdrawals, anger and sadness, pulling their hair out and on the brink of death. Something about this was the same but different. When Seth first overdosed on the team it was a cry for help, or when Janie admitted herself to the psych ward for a week, it was because she wanted to try. When Damien asked for a second, and third, and fourth chance David gave it to him because that was what Foxes deserved. It took him a moment of watching Kevin heave, snot and spit running down his chin, his hair falling over his face, his body shaking with anxiety, to remember that Kevin wasn’t a fox. Kevin was a Raven, and by god, that was so much worse.

I think we all know that Abby cares for her foxes like she’s their mother, but Kevin is just different. Abby had been seeing David long enough to know how much Kayleigh Day had really meant to him, and how much it hurt to watch Kevin do her proud. Now Kevin was sitting in front of her, his hand practically lifeless, his heart pouring out of every place it could. She tried not to look at David’s face as he paced the room, watching her patch up Kevin’s hand as best she could. Kevin only started to calm down when she handed him a bottle of Diazepam and some water.

And then Kevin whispers that Riko did it. David almost didn’t hear him. He nearly asked for him to repeat it until it hit him. Riko did it. Riko smashed the hand of his number two so badly it would take a long time for him to play again, if he even wanted to. Abby sent him a deathly glare when he mumbled to himself; “I’ll kill that little jumped up piece of shit”.

The rest is history; Kevin passes out not long after, David carries him to the bus, and they drive to the stadium to pick up the foxes. Kevin sleeps the rest of the way until the sun is starting to rise and they’re back in South Carolina. Kevin doesn’t stop crying on and off again for a couple days, and Abby had to hold him back from escaping more than once. After watching his anxiety consume him, and when he told her none of the Ravens were allowed to be medicated in any manner, she got him a script for some quick-acting anxiety meds for him to keep. It took him a week of energy-sapping panic attacks before she could convince him to actually take them as he needed them.

David took out a loan five days after Kevin had arrived into his care. He called Edgar Allan on the sixth, and the seventh, and the eighth day. By the ninth day Kevin was released from the grips of Ravens. By the tenth day they had started the process of making Kevin Day a fox. I suppose it’s for the best Riko fucked up his hand so badly, isn’t it? At least it gave him the ability to fit into the eligibility criteria for being a Fox. Welcome to the club, Kevin Day, and prepare to be gravely disappointed.

I saw Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers movie and as per usual, have thoughts. Here are some after a few hours of reflection:

- I am very very mad at the depiction of Peter Pan. They took Bobby Driscoll's life and made it a villains story when the reality is so much darker and so much Injust. Someone else wrote a very long post on this topic so please search it out or Google him yourself. I did a deep dive while doing research for my Note on Children's Rights in the age of social media and....yeah....children vloggers and family vlogs are a mistake.

- I can't unhear John Mulaney and Andy Sandberg. It's frustrating just for me, I think

- John Mulaney helping someone keep Clean (plot spoiler? Idk) feels...ironic? Funny? Odd? Idk. Again, might just be me

- STOP MAKING WARRANTS SEEM BAD. I stg I heard Ellie go "there's so much red tape -- we need a warrant and probable cause" and I screamed "YES. YES YOU DO" Because that's how you get innocent people getting tangled up when they are innocent! Fucking...ahhh

- it's kinda funny. The meta feels like it's bashing me in the head though....too many Seth Rogans'...
