tgcf book spoilers, but one mu qing and xie lian snippet that I think about a lot is this one, at the start of xie lian’s second banishment when he’s surprised to hear mu qing being described as generous and kind:

as opposed to this memory from before his first ascension when mu qing started giving out cherries to the kids in the city:

I think it just really goes to show 1) how deeply mq’s actions truly affected xl and what he thought of him, but also 2) just how different mq and xl are fundamentally in the way that they think and approach things.

I don’t have a lot of commentary on xl that hasn’t already been said, but bc we get the story from xl’s pov, we see a lot of mq’s actions being framed as selfish or suspicious (which is fair, bc again, we know how much his actions hurt xl), but we also see a lot of misconstrued kindness, like in book 8 where it’s revealed that he knocked out fx in order to save him. it’s also pretty obvious how much mq still cares abt xl, with how quickly he volunteers as fu yao and the lengths he goes to protect him when he deems hc a threat, so I also think it’s very likely that mq leaving the trio first was exactly what he said it was — that he thought becoming a junior official, ascending quickly, would be the best way to take care of not just his mother, but also xl, fx, the king and queen, and himself, and so in a way, him leaving was him acting on his kindness. but ofc it doesn’t work out, and he spends the next 800 years fighting w/ fx about it, defending himself, his decisions, and his kindness, and nitpicking the accuracies of his statues while he himself remains completely misunderstood by the two people he probably cares abt the most.

and idk, I guess I just think that’s probably a really lonely way to spend 800 years.

sonic has a grave for shadow. only he knows about it. he thought about telling rouge or amy, but he never got around to it.

he made it after the fall. after shadows death. after sonic failed to save him.

since he couldnt save him from death, he could at least save him in death. he knew shadow wouldnt be forgotten, hed live on in rouge and amy and sonics and the others memories, but sonic wanted something physical. so he made a grave. its shitty. its just a normal rock with 'Shadow the Hedgehog' written on it with sharpie. but its better than nothing.

after shadows death sonic would spend a lot of his time there. hed talk about things he wished shadow couldve seen and done and experience, and he cried each time, knowing that would never happen.

he didnt stop visiting the grave after shadow came back.

he still went there, to talk about him, current him. things he wanted to do with him, things he think hed like, his thoughts on him. anything sonic felt like he couldnt tell shadow, hed say outloud to the grave.

maybe shadow finds it one day. he asks sonic what it is. and sonic says (embarrassed) that he wanted shadow to be remembered, and that was the best he could do at that time. he thinks shadow would think its stupid.

shadow didnt think anyone cared. no one aside from himself cared enough to give maria a grave, why would anyone care to give him one?

but sonic did. sonic cared.

something about jackie planning her life in a way that always included shauna and not realizing how those plans made shauna feel so unseen by her. something about shauna planning to get away and then after jackie's death staying rooted in the place that reminds her of jackie and with the people who will forever tie her to jackie and seeing her everywhere

(having a thought) yknow i always think abt that moment where X says he gets invited to a lot of parties actually. considering his nature you'd almost think he isn't that social bc they're quite meek and docile but the thing is. a lot of characters like X because they are very friendly too. so it's interesting to me that X stays with Four despite them being fairly mean, when clearly other characters like them a lot. it wouldn't be hard for X to make new friends because pretty much everyone who they meet likes them. so... why do they stick around? sure, loyalty is probably one reason. but I almost wonder if X is drawn to Four for being someone who doesn't immediately treat them like this sweet, soft character.... Four is willing to be blunt towards them when no one else really will because of the way they view X. and I think that's part of the reason why X stays. Four's confidence is something they are trying to learn from and is something they slowly do gain more of.

and that goes for Four as well. X is everything Four struggles to be. both of them inspire the other to try and change and grow. they are both learning from each other and becoming more like the other as the show continues on. okay im done having thoughts now

the most important thing abt being an artist is being an Enjoyer of art bc every few days i get the urge to delete my posts, but then i remember how much i hate when editors private their edits or when writers delete fics instead of orphaning them, and i come back to my senses. tortured artistry be damned, i can’t do that to my fellow art enjoyers
