you know how sometimes theres some popular character and most of the fanstuff is mostly accurate on the surface but you personally have some lived experience shared w this character that enables you to have a deeper understanding of little nuances under the hood that inform things like their decision making and stuff. its on a sliding scale of accuracy of course. personally i mostly get this with my mental disorders with characters such as ogata but sometimes theres LITTLE TINY THINGS that bother me about specifically the various violence related fetishes. and the fact that it bothers me itself bothers me cuz i feel like. "oh Clearly you havent received or inflicted wounds for sexual pleasure". yes obviously they havent done that. nobody else does that. i am abnormal in nature and insane in the head

If you're still doing the character ask game - Ray Vecchio, 1, 8, 12, and 22 <3

Yessss I am always here to talk about Ray, thank you!

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

Idek man, I imprinted like a duckling or something. I love everything about him. Love his loud mouth, his loud clothes, the armani, the shift between the two fashions, the big nose and green eyes, love his dickishness and complaining, love his selflessness and steadfastness and how they go hand in hand with the complaining, love his family and his shitty dad backstory and his zuko backstory and his childishness with Frannie and his catholicism, love that he will always put his loved ones before anything else he cares about and Fraser gets the highest priority position, love how the show constantly seamlessly shifts from two dimensional cartoon to deep and thoughtful characterization with him as well as Fraser.

I love how he's skeptical but intrigued by Fraser anyway and always ends up convinced by him, love how he was burnt out at first but gets promoted in season 2, love how he vanishes from Fraser's life for the sake of duty, essentially, in what could be read as an ironic consequence for Fraser, love that he'll do absolutely anything for Fraser and feels unappreciated for it because Fraser doesn't prioritize him, love that they get closer and closer to resolving this issue but Ray leaves before it can fully happen.

Character of all time for me.

8. What’s something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

Ohhhhh boy. I mean I can't stand people characterizing him as Fraser's mean ex of course, but it's pretty rare that I ever saw that because I couldn't get into the season 3/4 side of fandom. Anything that characterizes him as physically abusive in general, which ime pretty squarely rests on italian stereotypes (not cop statistics when every character is a cop) since iirc he never uses violence impulsively in the show - it's always a deliberate choice he makes in the line of duty as part of the cop show format - and the show specifically contrasts him with his abusive father that way. (Though I may make an exception for very thoughtful post Vegas characterization that takes his actual depiction on the show into account.)

Even just like, eg this one Ray/Ray fic I once read where they got into a mutual physical fight kind of bugged me lol because I legit don't think Ray V would.

Among F/V shippers, I really loathe the headcanon that Ray shot Fraser on purpose either consciously or subconsciously. I can respect the attempt for more conflict and angst in theory, but I will die on the Ray V defense hill lol, and he would never. He was clearly aiming for Victoria, we saw that from his point of view in the scene itself, and Fraser deliberately took the bullet to shield Victoria. He sees where Ray's aiming, he runs faster to reach her in time, and Letting Go parallels it with Ray V taking a bullet for Fraser. He also casually protests that it was an accident when they're both over the drama in the tag, which would never happen if that wasn't the case.

12. What’s a headcanon you have for this character?

He wouldn't exactly describe himself as bisexual, but Fraser isn't the first guy he's been with. He had a thing with a bff in high school or college, and because his priority system goes: loved ones > abstract ideals, he doesn't feel guilty about it. Bff is gay, bff isn't bad or disgusting or whatever else, therefore gay sex is fine, at least with him. If asked he might still say it's a sin in general, but Ray absolutely has loopholes for people he cares about.

And if Fraser is his first then again, Fraser takes priority and Ray doesn't even have a sexuality crisis. Oh, Fraser is into men? Totally fine, it's Fraser, and he's never refused Fraser anything before so why should he start now? Especially when he looks so good in the brown uniform.

Relatedly I also envision a backstory scene where he once drove Frannie to an abortion clinic, casually bitched about it on the way accidentally triggering Frannie's guilt and making her cry, then instantly switched to pro-choice talking points that he'd always dismissed before to reassure her.

22. If you’re a fic reader, what’s something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don’t like?

I love that it's not an uncommon characterization choice to have Ray just bypass internalized homophobia because Fraser takes precedence over all that. Love fic where Ray is attracted to Fraser and knows it, however he deals with it. I love post-canon F/V fic a LOT. Give them their happy reunion and happily ever after!!!

Honestly I'm surprisingly easy for Ray V fic in general, it's pretty rare to find characterization that annoys me. Even if I disagree, I'll usually still buy in for the duration. I love fic where Ray V is there <3 Like, I'll read het fic for him. I read basically every Ray V/Stella fic out there ffs, just for Ray. That should tell you something lmao.

Something I don't like - well there's everything I complained about for question 8 lol. I don't like when fic writers buy into the bitching and moaning and miss the selfless devotion, but that's pretty rare in Ray-centric fic, it's more when he's a side character or just part of Fraser's backstory.

More commonly, I don't like when Fraser wants to get together and Ray pushes him away at first because of internalized homophobia. I'll still read it, but like, I'll be shaking my head the whole time lol.

And lastly, I don't have impassible top/bottom preferences for F/V, but I can't read anything kinky where Ray doms lol, pure personal bias there.

currently TES has been getting the gears going the most, but ER is my perennial love - and once in a blue moon I am compelled to do something TLU! SM is still very dear to my heart but I've been pretty dry on fic inspiration/drive for it for a while now :(

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

these are ALL OLDER PIECES haha so don't look too closely: it still burns - fluffy OPM piece for Knight c: what else can I say! too cold for you here and now - fluffy little Makoami piece (are you sensing a pattern already...) featuring terrible puns, because I have always loved characters trying to make each other laugh you do it for her (that is to say you do it for him) - another one written for Knight; OPM/SM crossover. with TWO chapters! left, left, left right left - introspective Romano piece re: arm. I actually now disagree with some character choices I made in this one so seeing it still getting attention has me like no... this doesn't represent me... Across the Western Ocean I Must Wander - Makoami pirate AU. also not a oneshot! (shock!) I don't think it holds up as well as I'd like, but the premise still compels me and there's some cute moments :'D still VIVIDLY remember being up late on a class night listening to one song on repeat while working on The Kissing Scene™

almost always! it may take me a bit sometimes, but I do try to make sure I do

frankly idek - being completely honest, "angst" just as a word at this point turns me off so immediately and so hard that I can't engage with the concept that way. I prefer endings with some hope, but I like some emotional complexity too! all my baggage about fandom and "angst" is for. ANOTHER TIME

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

again I'm not totally sure how to answer this one! I guess Ocean? doesn't get much more stereotypically happily-ever-after than "and then they ran away together the end"

8. Do you get hate on fics?

no, thankfully! I've gotten the occasional comment here and there that make me go "??" but more just sort of confusing, not malicious as far as I can tell lol

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

sdlkghlsj sex-repulsed asexual here and not for the first time I say: I am reasonably confident nobody wants me doing that. it can happen but offscreen to spare me the inevitable mortification... fade-to-black is about as far as we go in the House Of Mouse sorry!!

I have before! it's not my preferred stomping grounds but I like a good one. I don't know about "craziest" but wouldn't do us any harm I think is probably the funniest of the handful I've shared (again: written primarily for Knight! warning that it is from 2016 LOL)

yes! baby Mouse ran a fic awards "show" (in the written medium obviously) with a friend back in like 2010 or 2011 on FFN... it was loads of fun!

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Makoami Princess and the Goblin AU :( still means a lot to me but SM just hasn't been where I've been drawn to write for a while!

16. What are your writing strengths?

dialogue + characterization is most often what I get compliments on (<3) - I'd like to think I have a fairly decent hand for little meaningful details too, but I think these more often than not end up just being for my own benefit because I like my symbolism subtle aha

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

LONGFORM... plugging together things into ordered chapters and maintaining momentum over longer spaces is my greatest struggle. I've had to come to terms with the fact that I'm much more a sprinter than a marathon runner, and it's been very freeing letting myself step outside of needing all the surrounding context to just do things as I come to them and then getting to string it all into chronology via series ordering

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

done well I find it really impressive! it's very hard to do well though ahaha.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

without the context of "fandom", the first story I ever wrote was about the Boxcar Children hanging out with me at age 6 (the entirety of chapter three was all of us singing the alphabet together and it was narratively crucial that this happen. for some reason.). with the context of knowing about fandom though, Scooby Doo at 11-12!

20. Favorite fic you've written?

of what's posted: Ocean has a lot of personal meaning because it was the first multichapter piece I was able to finish in several years, but on a technical level I've been really proud of some of the more layered pieces I've been practicing in the last year or so: Thermal Equilibrium and skipping stones I think are good examples of that :')

First ever ship: first ship i remember getting into was spuffy (btvs) (i think i was like. 5) but first one i got involved in fandom for was frerard

Last song: "Common People" by William Shatner lolll. as much as that song is bizarre for existing (william by covering that song you became exactly the kind of person it's about), it's a real fuckin jam my god. the way it accelerates and the two voices get increasingly intertwined as it goes on is mesmerizing to me

Last film: I think Paranormal Activity a few weeks ago? I've been on a haunting kick. if anyone has good ghost/possession/etc recommendations i'd love them

Currently reading: went through a few more stories from Gothic Fantasy's Asian Ghost Short Stories collection, I've been reading it for ages but it's always a good time. of the ones I read recently my fave was "The Magnanimous Girl" by Pu Songling. it's super short but i loved the girl lol

Currently watching: just finished the Plagiarism and You(tube) video by hbomberguy (highly recommend), but more generally i've been watching a lot of Phasmophobia gameplay vids and streams (again, I'm fr on a haunting kick)

what is a fandom-related pet peeve that you have?

ough... i don't have many like fandom-related single things that tick me off. not to say that nothing pisses me off bc i am. extremely easily annoyed. but there's no one thing that repeatedly drives me completely and utterly bonkers as compared to anything else. i guess i really don't like it when ppl misuse tags for reach, but i've like. altered my behavior to not even bother going in the tags so idek if that counts lol.

my irl broad pet peeve is condescension and that definitely also applies on here! once saw someone calling ppl who (politely!!!!!) disagreed w them re: calling all gen zers media illiterate morons w a craving for violence (bc said zoomers [who were not. all zoomers. lol] disagreed on/made jokes abt a driver's longevity/skill/washed-or-not-ness) "girlypops" and saw red lol. fastest block of my entire life for MANY reasons

Had the weirdest dream about your universe/OCs/idek!!!!!

Somehow me n my partner found a giant egg in the woods. And in this dream I knew all about ur OCs and in my mind I was instantly like „THAT‘S NOAH IN THIS EGG OMG!“. But I could not talk about my knowledge since I was under some kind of spell. Yeah. We took that egg home.

That’s when it got rlly weird lol.

You (in the sense of you running this blog) appeared and knocked on our apartment door. You were dressed like an old druid and were like „I live here now“. And me n my partner were like „weird but okay“. Once again I knew everything and was like „!!!! That‘s Elia!!!! They want to make sure we take care of the egg and protect it!!!!“ but I still couldn’t say something due to the spell. And you made sure to be rlly vage with what you said to us since you also couldn’t drop the entire lore on us due to a spell you were under. And I tried to be like „!!!! My guy!!!! I know everything!!!!“ but it didn’t work.

Then there was this evil cooperation(TM) that somehow found out we found the egg. And they wanted the egg too to turn Noah into a weapon to use against the current ruler of the planet. So you gave us the mission to break into the cooperation‘s HQ and destroy it so that they would stay away and not hurt the egg. My partner n I made it into HQ and found the control room. And right before we pressed the „destruction button“ I woke up.

also you will be delighted to learn that i do have this au!!!!! kind of. amorphous immortality research setting nickname code:metallia which is so ancient it doesn't even have a tag (it was huge in 2010-14 me's brain from before i oc dumped on here lol) can't overshare bc rsi typing restrictions but the basic setup is. alternate reality where true rulers don't exist and the nerice research team tm is trying to make their own gods. the original plot of it was very tide family centric (jumie gets fridged at the start for once lol) and most of the other immortal-adjacent ocs are in some way being used or created in the process of this research. i haven't actively worked on it since 2014 though and that was pre-moon lore overhaul so i can't say much more abt it here & now :x

what feels even better than getting followers after posting a url though is when someone follows organically. can you tell how starved i am for connection and friendship? lmao this post is kinda sad. But honestly like there’s a couple people who followed my hair blog semi-recently and i got to follow them back and we post some similar stuff, i like it a lot. feels a little like i’m finding my people.

i know most my blogs are just reblog blogs, but i love to curate my little spaces for my interests and engage with other people who are also curating their little spaces for their interests

using tumblr very much feels like putting together a collage sometimes, or decorating your bedroom wall. and idek. i’m trying to find other people who rip out the same magazine pages as i do. tumblr is a creative outlet for me. it’s where i come to appreciate art on a daily basis. and also feel a sense of camaraderie, knowing there’s other people who connect with the same art i do. it would be nice to have this irl but i’ll take what i can get lol.

and idk how else to find followers on my smaller blogs other than just wait it out and occasionally post my url to my bigger blogs. i barely even know how to find other blogs that i can follow for like more hair/makeup content. we need a tag for our niche so we locate each other on here. clothing blogs are easier to find than hair/makeup blogs.

is it just me??? like, I don’t really like the way tina and lola are portrayed.

warning: unexpanded thing™ bc ik if i put this in my drafts and i don’t finish it now, i’ll never come back to it. so yeah, please enjoy this very poorly written thing, or don’t.

tl;dr: looney tunes’ portrayal of tina and lola is subtly stereotypical/bordering on misogynistic maybe. i’m no expert and this isn’t like a full in-depth analysis of the show/video bc i’m ignoring my hw for this lol so take my words with a grain of salt.

firstly: physically.

body: tina and lola have the same unrealistic body type – relatively large boobs supported by tiny, tiny waists and faces that are the same as the guys (except, of course, for the styled hair (and ears in lola’s case...? she even curls her ears specifically for a date with bugs, which is not only unrealistic bc they’re her ears lmao but it also encourages the notion that women dress up for men) and long, obvious eyelashes (presumably just to make sure you know that they’re women).

and while it’s of course okay to portray a woman with eyelashes (many women do lengthen their eyelashes or something bc it makes them feel good), if you portray all the women in something with eyelashes, it promotes having a certain type of eyelashes. this is further supported by tina’s sister’s baby son, of who(m?) daffy mistakes for a girl. the only defining trait of the baby that could differentiate the sex of the baby is his eyelashes.

the girls are more humanised in their portrayal; their skin is closer to more human skin tones in comparison to daffy and bugs. daffy is completely black except for a white band around his neck, which is a pretty plausible duck colour scheme for the general audience (I’m assuming the audience, like me, is duck-ignorant lmao). bugs is grey. very rabbit-like.

lola’s a caramel colour – plausible for rabbits, but it’s specifically chosen to be more human-like. tina is yellow, kind of like a rubber duck i guess? still more human-like than daffy. this could be a bit of a stretch, but this could have been a conscious choice so as to make a more adult audience subconsciously less guilty for possibly lusting after them.

clothing: well, firstly, they’re actually clothed lmao. it’s perfectly okay to portray anthropomorphised animals in clothing, but if only female animals have clothes... there’s something wrong here. throughout the video, daffy and bugs almost never have clothes on (bugs dons a suit for his wedding and daffy wears a towel once). they’re animals, it’s natural. so why bother always portraying the women with clothes? well, it’s a simple logical path: if it’s sexual, children shouldn’t see it. this means the producers don’t have to worry about any genitals showing, so the bottom halves are fine. so logically, the reason characters wear clothes at all is to cover their top halves. men being topless is socially acceptable; if it’s hot out, you’ll likely see men outside – chests exposed to the world – to cool off. women’s chests, however, are seen as sexual organs, and therefore should be censored via clothes. i won’t get into that issue here as it’s probably been discussed a lot.

voices: daffy and bugs both have slightly annoying nasally voices which I see as conventionally unattractive. both of the girls have obviously feminine “human” voices. ngl i don’t know how to expand this further so i won’t. someone else can if they see this

and secondly: personality.

tina: judging from what i’ve seen, tina is kind of portrayed as a tame-ish bitch/jerk type. she’s not very good at her job in a printing 

lola: lola’s depicted as an airheaded ditz. (she also appears to be blonde-ish, so that also contributes to the dumb blonde stereotype). lola also plays the role of a crazy girl at times – namely the part where she was possessive of daffy and trespassed into his room/house (that’s not acceptable behaviour, kids).

on a date with bugs near the start of the video, she’s shown as someone who can’t make up her mind about the most mundane things, like if she wants soup or not.
