General AU Notes

in my head the au is slightly based on this analysis. mostly i was just really into the idea that cloudbank works as it should (a perfect democracy where everyone votes what they want) because they're computer programs. things run smoothly, until people start to become self aware... or at least are very close to becoming self aware.

most of the thieves meet ren through his music somehow - they just feel a connection that something is off about cloudbank... but they can't put their finger on it (hehe almost self awareness). the only people that might have met under different circumstances is haru (most likely through school at traverson hall - she feels like the type to encourage ren to go for music instead of city planning actually) and futaba (i cannot separate these two not blood related siblings). anyway maybe they don't find answers but they find each other at least !!

Thieves Notes

ren was on track to become a city planner but an incident made him change his mind- i have yet to figure out what this incident is because red's bio doesn't say anything about it but i'll be interesting to see how it made him select music and linguistics. aside from personal interest in music, i think he uses music to navigate his feelings and respond to events in cloudbank, which in turn resonates with the citizens of cloudbank. otherwise, he's a great performer on stage, but rather quiet and elusive off stage, especially after an altercation at one of his performances. he's been working on his most recent album after an hiatus.

the game (or at least the wiki ) suggests unknown is not a registered citizen so considering goro is an orphan...i'm sure there's some shido reasons here that i haven't figured out. i also considered making his past in reference to henter jallaford for the "detective" reference but not sure how it would work since henter "disappears" so i just scrapped it. i did think it would be funny if makoto and him worked at the same precinct - they'll get on each others' nerves but will respect and work extremely well together. anyway, at the moment he's just a mysterious man with no records who bodyguards ren hehe

considering there is a specific role in transistor of someone literally painting the skies - yusuke!!! he is very content painting the skies and takes requests - until he receives a very specific request that inspires him enough to break the law and is now banned for a specific amount of time from skypainting. cue internal struggles on what is his purpose in life now. meeting ren helps him realize he can do art in other ways, which is why he ends up doing the art direction for ren's music

ann could've been a model but a lot of the characters in transistor are "creators" in some way so i thought it would be interesting if she was a designer like her parents. maybe something like not being taken seriously because she has her designer parents backing her designs and she wants to make it on her own. another idea i wanted to explore was the concept of going to the country. citizens in cloudbank just all agree that's where you go after a period of time. but even if you are ready, are others ready for you to go? so have shiho as ann's fashion muse that recently decided she completed her life to the fullest and went to the country. my girl is strong so she will be ok!!!

ryuji is a retired athlete! i based him off olmarq but i am not sure if i want to make the reason for his retirement simply a bad injury or if i should follow closer to olmarq's canon background. either way he did have to leave his career behind. he gets a little lost but finds his way. ryuji becomes a broadcaster because he can be close to the sports industry but found people enjoyed listening to his commentary on the events in cloudbank. he seems to be very good at collecting rumours because of this. he should be careful not to know too much though.

makoto's the truth seeker in this au as she's a detective. in the game there's a string of disappearances in which she is trying to figure out but can't solve. as we know the central administration took the northwestern edge of goldwalk offline and evacuated the residents because of the disappearances but she's still very suspicious. she is investigating this case, but finds no answers (or not yet at least).

futaba basically works for the central administration as an archivist. internet search tells me an archivist's job is to acquire, appraise, arrange, describe, preserve and facilitate access to records that have ongoing and permanent value. i find that very interesting to the transistor lore - it means she's privy to a lot of secretive information. i took a lot of inspiration from asher kendrell who was piecing the history of cloudbank but him being fed up because it made no sense the more he dug into it. she's young and with great talents!! most likely she has a hunch but may be staying quiet until she has allies- will she ever get to the bottom of it though?

haru is our city planner basically - i thought of p5s with mariko for this haha. haru's based off nicola chein's profile in transistor mostly word for word so not much to say!!

mona is just a cat in my doodles but maybe i can figure out a better role for him aside from sneaky cat futaba uses to spy on things

Camerata Notes

sumi is sybil in this au (probably guessed it because of her role). i think about how sybil became infatuated with red's music first before red as a person. the music itself must have spoken to her - maybe sumire felt comforted about her feelings towards her sister through ren's music? sumire is my baby girl so i am like somewhat upset putting her in this role but i also think it could suit her very well. her ella persona also reminds me of process!sybil too haha

i also??? have this extremely vague but convoluted idea that the city of cloudbank only knows of the existence of a "sumi yoshizawa" and not that there is actually a kasumi yoshizawa and a sumire yoshizawa. why there are two? mostly because sybil is considered to be the life of the party and i think it suits kasumi more? (though i feel sumire can be just as fun if not for her sister lol). perhaps kasumi decided her time was up and she accomplished all she wanted and decided to go to the country and sumire took up the mantle because sumire didn't choose her selections yet but kasumi did??? just my random incomprehensible thoughts

i have no idea who should really be in the camerata aside from sumire. our classic evil antag shido (and the rest of the antags like madarame, etc) feels so wrong here. in my head i think the lineup would be maruki, zenkichi, ichinose, and sumire just because they were written as somewhat antagonistic but not like, evil evil. who would be who though... hm...

initially i thought royce could be maruki but when i think of ichinose i am like oh, yeah that could also work!!

i also did think the ovc terminals can be based off sophia haha

Other fun stuff

ren regularly performs at multiple locations because i said so. he performs at crossroads and jazz jin regularly but his big performances are at the canonical location: the empty set in cloudbank. lala and muhen beef it out on trying to get ren to sing at their locations exclusively simply because i think it is funny and has no actual impact on anything. i like to think they truce down the road because they can rake in double the income if they just shared ren lmao

ren is called red by fans simply because he wore red and they enjoyed it a little too much on him hehe

goro's chosen weapon is his brass knuckles, but will use weighted-knuckle gloves as part of work protocol. he can also handle a gun because no reason other than sexy.

goro is probably a smoker until he finds out it's bad for singers. not that ren smokes but it's funny to me to make goro reason it out that the second hand smoke hurts his bf's ability to sing.

leblanc replaces junction jans because i said so.

yusuke wears black because it is my stupid joke that creatives who work at an agency generally just end up wearing black all the time. my more poetic reason is that he is just mourning the fact he can't paint the sky anymore

the request yusuke got to paint the sky is actually from ann because she is giving shiho one last gift before she goes to the country (cue my own tears). the game states the sky becomes a "shimmering sapphire for the solstice" so i imagine it's like a pretty night sky? yusuke isn't mad about it because it was his choice to do it but i feel that ann feels very differently. i'm sure they sort it out though ;;;

ren saw that same sky and wrote a song about it. in my head i kept thinking of the words "into the crystalline blue" so that's what the song is called. it's the same song yusuke hears the first time he goes to see ren perform. this is not canon to the transistor game but it's my au so hehe. i have a vision ok. i want to draw some sky meets the sea bs

hilariously i had a note that says mishina and the newspaper girl at shujin should do ren's pr ??? im sure they can work something out with ryuji. but this also insinuates that all the other confidants exist and i have not thought beyond lala, muhen, and sojiro?? like who would iwai be...?

sojiro most likely retired from the central administration. plot potential, but also how far do i want to take this because i think i should just let the poor man retire

makoto definitely has a thing for bikes. i don't think she'd be a racer but i think she tinkers with bikes now and then.

hilariously the game wiki says olmarq is in the same area as red (highrise) so i like to think ren and ryuji are neighbours but only found out when ryuji got locked out of his house by accident. they're big fans of each other so ren invites him inside while he waits for a locksmith. they vibe well together because ryuji is a sweet boy.

haru and ren surely must have suffered through school together. i think it'll be cute if they did part time jobs at leblanc while they were schooling too. i'm sure they trauma bonded through school before ren decided to say maybe i should do music??? and haru is betrayed but she's also the sweetest so she will also encourage him to do music too haha

im assuming anyone who has played the game can probably match who i based the thieves on but it only goes so far as who they are in cloudbank and how they contribute to the city as citizens but very loosely. it’s more fun to me to play sandbox pre-transistor events but i digress!!

thinking about it now, im not sure if i want their abilities to stick too closely to the game? for example, i based yusuke off farrah yon dale - because the concept of a skypainter who could not paint anymore is very delicious - but her function switch() doesn’t feel like yusuke? compared to say ryuji where i took some inspo from olmarq and wave tennegan but respectively the function load() and cull() could potentially work for him. open to being convinced though if you have any thoughts ✨

Ur genuinely one of the best fanfic writers I've ever had the fortune to come across. So i have a question for you, do you have any tips on writing in general? How do you decide what should be sfw and what should be NSFW?

Sorry if it's a weird question, I've gotta pick ur brain about it tho

to answer your question on how i decide what’s sfw or nsfw: tbh, it depends. sometimes i sit down to write something perfectly wholesome and it winds up horny. sometimes i sit down to write something filthy and it gets soft halfway through. sometimes it really rides the line between smut and fluff. it just depends on wherever my idea takes me. i consider anything more than kissing OR anything with saucy dialogue should be tagged with nsfw just to be safe, but this is subjective!

for general writing tips (honestly, i’m tired af rn so i’ll probably come back tomorrow to reblog this with more tips but here’s some i think are very helpful for both sfw and nsfw fic writing):

a lot of times authors (including myself) get stuck writing repetitive or mundane scenes. especially when i write smut bc really sex is just the same thing over and over and over again, sometimes at varying speeds, but still.

if you’re stuck on where to go in a scene, remember to not only describe what the characters are doing; describe how they feel, what they’re thinking, what they’re considering doing. remember to describe the internal point of view as well.

how does this character feel towards the other character? has this changed? if so, why, and how do they feel about it?

how do they feel about whatever action they’re doing with the other character? how does the other character make them feel?

do these characters know each other well? do they notice mundane details about each other? if so, include it.

if a character is thinking, feeling, or doing anything, it can be included.

think very hard about how YOU are imagining this scene. you probably forget to mention a detail or two, like a character looking around or running their hands over marks on a table or absentmindedly kicking at the ground.

every minor detail is important to the atmosphere of a scene. adding or omitting certain things can completely change the way a scene feels

also, be very intentional about word choice. why use “angry” when you can use “furious?” why use “break” when you can use “shatter?” why use “yell” when you could use “shriek?” think hard about that sort of thing, it makes all the difference.

and, last one for now: remember to describe emotions physically. do not just say that a character is angry; describe their brows furrowing, hands balling into fists, or their eyes clouding with fury. do not just say a character is sad; describe the tears they are trying to hold back, the quiver in their voice, or the shake in their hands.

eh, it changes. for a long time i wanted to be an actor, then a writer, then back to actor, then to writer/director/actor. so it just kind of goes all over the place. definitely something creative though, it's my favorite type of environment.

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

Oh my god, SO many. So so so many. I could not list even a small portion, we would be here all day. And not even in this fandom, I have other fandoms that i lovingly go back to occasionally and just go through my faves from time to time just to experience the feels again. I am a HUGE rereader. Once a fic makes it into my rotation it stays there.

Are we talking like "This isn't working and I don't like it dsjafhah!" upset or like "They're sad and it's horrible waaaaah!" upset? Bc i am number 1 at least once a week lmao. And yes, i am currently avoiding the part of Stellar Flare i have to write bc they are having an argument and i don't like it and it's making me sad but it's needed for the Plot! I really need to get over it and write it bc it has been a YEAR since i posted the first chapter to that fic and not that more than five people are interested in that fic (this is not me being self-deprecating, this is just me being aware that scifi isn't really this fandom's jam it's fine) it's fun and i get to play with Tropes.

Indignation was rising in his face, and if he'd had any other color to the soft green glow of his form, he'd probably be flushed. "He had a little spray thingy, with vervain water," Kol whined, miming pulling a trigger. 

Caroline stared. "A squirt gun?"

Kol's lips twisted a little in thought. "Maybe? Came out of the sink, with a hose."

There was a pause, and then Caroline practically yelled, "A spray faucet? You got yourself killed because a kid too young to vote turned a spray faucet on you?"

"I was trying to avert an apocalypse!" he said indignantly, "I had a lot going on that day."

i used to have the entire kung fu panda and secrets of the furious five scripts memorized complete with vocal impressions. i do not have them memorized in their entirety anymore but if i hear a little snippet from either of those things i can sometimes recite the rest of the scene verbatim. i Fucking love kung fu panda and i always will

texas. it was within an asian community which was nice bc i was able to find a lot of my culture’s food at the grocery store growing up

My thoughts: Whenever I get writers block i just work on this a bit more bc it’s easy. It’s just a fairly lengthy one shot.

Titanium Tin Man- Donnie gets an invite to a big fancy science convention where a famous multibillionaire is going to supply funds and endorsements to help kickstart one ‘aspiring inventor’. No surprise Donnie wins, and he gets very very famous. This power obviously goes to his head because he’s Donnie.

Inspired by: Cabinet Man by Lemon Demon

My thoughts: I am very very very excited to write this and have considered dropping Two Birds multiple times so i can get started. However, I already dropped the first fic I ever wrote, so i wanna try and stick with this one. I’m really mostly excited for the second arc of the story, which is also inspired by a Lemon Demon song, but just saying what the song is a massive spoiler so.

Drift Away- Donnie gets kidnapped by Big Mama, but he is confident in the fact that his brothers will find him. However, Big Mama has powerful connections in low places, and her web of lies extends farther than anyone could guess.

My Thoughts: This is kind of a remake of my first, dropped fic Purple Rain has Fallen Down except it only hits like three of the same story beats. I am also very excited abt this bc Big Mamas new ally is so cool to me man i can’t wait to write him.

Burn it All Down- Donnie invents nanotech, which he turns into an alter ego called Pyras he uses as an outlet to let out all his anger and emo stuff into. Basically he sneaks out in his nanotech suit and sets stuff on fire while disguised. However, things start to get complicated when his brothers start to take interest in bringing Pyras to justice. And then Baron Draxum gets involved and it all goes to shit.

My thoughts: I was OBSESSED with this concept for a while, but i’ve kind of fallen out of love with it. It’s still cool, just not amazing. Also i struggled so hard to explain the plot there oml.

Echoes (Name Highly Subject to Change)- Donnie hears the voices of the Krang in his head after the events of the movie. After determining they are not controlling him in any way, Donnie builds a complicated, morally ambiguous contraption that can be used to turn thoughts into reality using nanotech in the hopes he can use it to confront the Kraang. Idk it’s kind of hard to explain.

Inspired by: Turn the Lights Off by Tally Hall and Maya the Psychic by Gerard Way

My thoughts: This started as two different concepts: the one inspired by Turn the Lights Off where Donnie makes what is basically a non-virtual reality machine and the one inspired by Maya the Psychic where Donnie hears the Kraangs voices, but i was having trouble fleshing them out so i just kinda… smushed them together. Idk what else to say.

Emotionally Unavailable- After an accident while experimenting with a mystic crystal, Donnie’s emotions are separated from his body and manifest as ‘ghosts’ nobody else can see. Basically Inside Out but the emotions have no control and just yell at the person.

Hey hi I hope you're well!! I'm sorry this is knida long but can you or the authors or whoever this might concerning to share how they perfectly plotted their stories/fic/writing?? Like the transition between each scenes which not left the readers confusing. How they build up character development?? Most importantly, i wanna know if they write sci-fi/fantasy/history where did they find the ideas to create a new world or place (where the author not living in)?? And how do they write a character's profession and impressively described the activity of a profession even though they aren't one? Or using a medical terms, laws, psychology, etc. Is it crucial to do a research before writing?? I'm asking this bc i am very interested in writing nowadays but still lacking in every way especially to keep the plot in order. It's amazing to see how the authors can write anything easily like its at the top of their heads.

This could have many different answers and you'd be able to get some great answers and tips from asking specific writers, but one of our mods (smittenwithlouis) will try her best to answer!

Personally, I get inspiration from pretty much anywhere or anything, no matter how big or small. I enjoy writing in the fantasy and supernatural genres because I thoroughly enjoy worldbuilding. I get inspiration from the many movies, shows, and books I've read throughout my lifetime and although the writing process itself is on the harder side for me, worldbuilding is something that comes super easy. I love the concept of making my own rules and world that no one has heard about before but like many things, anyone can see the inspiration from various sci-fi movies and I love when people say "hey this scene reminded me a bit of xxx from xxx." So don't be shy of taking a concept from a favorite movie or book and adding your own take on it when writing!

The writing process can be the same for some authors with all of their fics, but personally, mine depends on the specific fic I'm writing. It's rare that I plan or outline every scene out like some writers do. Most of the time I just have a few scenes in mind and the general gist of the direction I'd like my fic to go and start writing. Other times, however, things change in the middle of writing and I have to change scenes or scrap certain things that wouldn't make sense anymore. I usually let my writing take the reins and whenever inspiration strikes, I go in that direction even if I had originally planned something completely different.

A lot of other writers I know do choose to outline at least the basic scenes they have planned for their fics, and sometimes other details that they think are important to include. Most of the writers that I’ve talked to do allow themselves to alter their outline as they write though, as you always discover things and come up with new ideas throughout the process.

For me, whether I'm writing about a profession or setting, I tend to want to make it as realistic as possible. I do so much research for whatever I feel like I don't know much about. Obviously, fiction doesn't have to be accurate or realistic in any way, but I like for some of my stories to stay true to a profession, setting, or subject. I write mostly in the fantasy genre, so obviously, realism doesn't have to apply, but doing research on how a spaceship flies, or the origins of mythological creatures helps me world build so I do intensive work even if the reader might not catch on to it or care for it.

Again, at the end of the day, every author has their own writing process and I always encourage people to try different methods so they can know what best works or doesn't work for them. I hope this helped a bit and good luck on your writing journey!

Oh my god, I cannot tell you how infuriating it is to see “stalker” get thrown around like that. I would need two hands to count the amount of words that have lost meaning to me because people throw them out wildly and without any self-control. Stalkers engage in far more aggressive and obsessive behavior than Marinette, and usually also feature them harrassing whoever they’re stalking (such as calling them a lot), and they also never stop when they’re asked to. Marinette doesn’t fit the description of harrassment at all; Chat Noir does more than her and I don’t even call his behavior “harrassment” because that’s another word that’s lost all meaning by now and I wouldn’t use it in the first place.

Anyway, I think the Wayhem example is valid because Marinette’s crush on Adrien is written very much like a celebrity crush, so it’s similar territory.

On the note of “Volpina,” I do not understand it considering that Tikki was all on board with Marinette following Lila for the sake of getting the book back; that was one of the cases where there was an alternative motive out of just “follow Adrien” (which is not really something we see Marinette frequently doing; usually when we see her watching Adrien, it’s because she wants to approach but can’t bring herself to).

And yeah, most of the time, it’s just the narrative. The show basically puts it all on Marinette to solve all her personal problems (while constantly piling more stuff onto her) instead of getting active encouragement (no, eye rolls, verbal jabs, and groans do not count) from her friends and Tikki.

Like, what am I supposed to expect from Marinette when her friends still actively support Adrienette? By supporting Adrienette, regardless of the comments they make, they’re supporting Marinette’s behavior. Same with Tikki.

That’s been a common topic of salt for a long while, yeah, I just don’t talk about it much.

It’s a difficult subject because I’m the type who can’t hold it against the guy characters (so I won’t dislike Kagami for “being similar to Chloe/Lila in terms of aggressiveness,” for example) because it feels wrong to, but I can hate the trend itself.

It’s also doubly unfair because Marinette’s crushes blip away quickly (like Nathaniel and Nino) while Adrien’s crushes stick around specifically to upset Marinette, so it’s like the show is saying, “if there’s a character who loves/supports Marinette, they gotta either stop or leave” (I’m pretty sure I got a “Didn’t Need Burrow” about the narrative sending Luka away and I don’t doubt it).

In canon, Chat is ignorant of Ladybug's feelings and agency and doesn't comfort Marinette when she's sad; instead, she has to comfort him. In fanon, Chat Noir cares about how Ladybug feels and values her agency, his jokes are genuinely funny(although canon Chat can be funny too, it's just the where and when), and he backs off when Ladybug is uncomfortable. In fanon, Chat Noir genuinely helps Marinette when she's sad and sometimes comes to see her just because, not out of plot convenience(and calls her "Purrincess" a lot more, why did the English dub just change it to "little lady"?).

It makes me think, maybe, just maybe, if these things were canon and the world was fair to Marinette, I might actually ship it; it might actually have a fighting chance against Lukanette and Adrimi. But while all these things are cute, it only makes canon more disappointing. Fanon is doing what canon should be doing. Fanon is supposed to build off of what canon gave us and expand on it. Fanon shouldn't create its own alternative because canon isn't giving us enough to chew on, it shouldn't have to.

Sadly, I think most of the fans, including the Adriennette-shipping ones, should be on some level in charge of the show; things would be SO MUCH better for the main ship(which isn't even progressing that far) and SO MUCH fairer to Marinette if that were so.

I feel this very much so. The show has been around for a long time and fandom can shape a lot of things. I think the love square wouldn’t be as beloved as it is if not for the fandom expanding on it and making it better (obviously, in some cases, they don’t make it better, but the love square is plentiful so there has to be some good takes out there).

Some shows do in fact let the fandom build off the foundation it makes and then you have things like Astruc outright lying and saying that Chat apologized in “Frozer” when he, in fact, did not, which makes everything more muddled.

The show can be very, very predictable that way. The way I’d describe it is that I do expect these bad things to happen in really convoluted and dumb ways, but it still surprises me by exactly how predictable it ends up being. I mean, I catch certain things really easily and the phrase, “the whole episode just flashed before my eyes,” is something I commonly say.

Predictability isn’t entirely bad, but when the prediction is unwanted? Yeah, there’s a problem.

Marinette would probably be blaming herself for not being “sensitive enough” to Adrien/Chat’s feelings, which is what led to him being akumatized.

I could also see the girl squad forcing Marinette to give Adrien the present similar to canon, but maybe the beret doesn’t have a heart and Marinette isn’t actually interested, but rolls with it because the girl squad insists on it (probably convinced that she’s denying her own feelings).

I guess it depends on what you consider a strong female character. Like, can a shy female character be “strong” if maybe she holds firm to her morals or can fight people off?

I think Marinette has the potential to be a “strong female character” but the show nerfs her using her crush on Adrien (which raises so many red flags that I can’t cover here) and all it’s really done for her is get her laughed at and humiliated. If her life didn’t revolve and get ruined so badly due to her crush on Adrien, I think she’d be a strong female character (I know what the Season 3 finale did but I’m not buying any of it until we see proper results in Season 4).

That’s not to say that characters with crushes can’t be “strong” but it has to not control their life. I mean... okay...

Would Sabrina be considered a “strong female character” if she recognized Chloe’s treatment of her and worked hard to get out of it? Is the want and attempt to move on from something what constitutes “strength,” or do they have to succeed?

My conflict is always... I want to give Marinette credit for trying to move on from Adrien, but I know that it’s just the writing trying to make things seem tense/strained just to make it feel “better” when they actually get together. You see it all the time in anime/manga where a misunderstanding/self-doubt ends up hurting the relationship of the main ship; it’s to force conflict and separation, giving the ship something to overcome so they can get together.

I will say though that shy characters can be strong, physically strong characters can be weak, and so on. What defines a “strong” character may be vague to me, but I take it as I go. I would like to say that Marinette is a strong character on her own because she wants to improve even if she fails, but I also don’t want to give the writing credit for something that ultimately means nothing. I want to say that she’s strong but the narrative seems to do everything in its power to tell me that she’s weak.

Let me give a non-Miraculous example: say that you have a pacifist character, but there’s a villain who has done terrible things, cannot be redeemed (plz do not swarm my inbox with “anyone can be redeemed” comments, this is a hypothetical), and any method besides killing them right there and now would lead to more destruction/lives lost.

You might say that that the pacifist character would be “strong” in sticking by their morals and trying to find another way even if they ultimately would fail and the villain would get away, but an argument can also be made that the pacifist is being stubborn and letting people die because they are unwilling to rethink the morality they’ve chosen. Is a pacifist a pacifist if they’re letting the blood of other people spill because they themselves aren’t willing to have the blood be on their own hands? Are they “strong” because they stuck by what they believe in or are they “weak” because they refused to expand what they believed was “right”?

You could apply that to Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender (I know he’s not female but stick with me here). He was faced with having to murder the Fire Lord to the point where a past reincarnation who was raised on the same values as him didn’t agree with him. I think it was acceptable for him to try and stick to his morals and find another way, but he came up empty and the show had to give him a way of taking away the Fire Lord’s power so Aang didn’t have to make that choice in the end (there’s also that thing with the rock to his back and having to give up Katara but we’re not getting into that).

People could argue that, “oh, he admitted to himself that he’d have to kill the Fire Lord and then he got the Deus Ex Machina so it’s okay!” but the problem there is that the narrative basically gave two options: Murder or Take Away the Guy’s Bending, but there was incredible risk involved in the latter option. Aang almost lost himself against the Fire Lord and risked everything so that he would not have to kill him.

I would argue it makes him weak. I would argue that needing the narrative to favor him makes him weak (which is one plus for Marinette I guess the narrative is usually against her???). The lack of ability to understand his past lives and see things from their perspective made him weak for me, as him holding so stiffly to his values made it appear that he felt his ways were “better” than everyone else’s (which had been a long-standing problem for me and I never forgave him for “The Southern Raiders”).

I see her like I see any dead mom in media (I know she’s comatose, not the point); a tool for angst. Her reasons for using the peacock could be anything (might even be that she was given it and simply wearing it was damaging to her, or she transformed once to try it out and that was that), but I just don’t feel strongly about her because I’m not invested in the Agreste plot.

Me personally, I headcanon that she’s kind of like Bustier where she appears good but is actually very damaging. Instead of the generic “good mom who tried to do good things for her son but folded to angry dad’s demands,” I would like to imagine that she’s selfish in her own right and was part of the reason for Adrien never going to public school; she’s possessive herself (a contributor to why the Agrestes are so wealthy) and wants her son to remain close to her even if she genuinely cares about him and should want him to be able to go and learn from the world.

But I imagine they’ll probably make her either “pure good mom” or “villain like Gabriel where she’s ‘sympathetic’ but also evil.” The show has never been good at doing gray morality (see my MC Audrey for example) and usually messes things up if they try.

Like, it did make me genuinely sad in the New York special to see Liiri come out and call out Gilbert’s name, only to see this other guy standing there and we know that this Gilbert guy is very much dead by now.

On a related note, I’d be all for a special getting into a kwami’s problem and not making everything Marinette’s fault, so having Marinette maybe helping a kwami through theri issues and it leads into getting more lore on the kwami.

Orientation-related inclusivity isn’t even that hard. Have a character get a call from someone and just be like, “oh, it’s my boyfriend/girlfriend,” and then other companies can just dub it if they’re so afraid of characters who like the same gender.

Firstly, I’d have Marinette learn and become more of a mentor character to other characters (male and female), lean more into more “females in power” (like Mylene showing genuine interest in being the next mayor), either less focus on the “girl antagonists are evil/unredeemable” plots or at least make them legitimate threats that don’t need the narrative to cater to them to make them threatening.

Secondly, Adrien needs to STOP being the one to keep telling Marinette/Ladybug what’s right or the way to do things. I can’t stress this one enough.

Thirdly, maybe not having a season dedicated to three guys getting miraculouses while all the girls are either questioned, self-reveal, or get their miraculous revoked. That might help. :P

I struggle to get fully behind Felinette because so much of it does rely on fandom interpretation and playing with fanon in general (plus, having to clarify “I ship fanon Felinette” is weird).

I do however agree that it’s interesting that it ultimately comes to a character built on fanon grounds, and how much more acceptance characters get when they’re based on “canon”/originally canon characters.

Things are starting to change for the better and I want Miraculous to capitalize on that emergence of female empowerment as much as possible. Plus, with the New York Special, the magical girl aspects of the show have been toned down if not obliterated entirely: the transformations for the superheroes only last one minute, and they feel more like the Avengers than Sailor Senshi(which I don't mean in the most literal sense, of course, I am in no way saying that none of them can be male.). Plus they pulled the whole "Samus is a Girl" thing TWICE! TWICE! Come on, if you're show is really about girl power, it shouldn't come as a surprise when girls are, well...powerful! And especially not in Magical Girl for obvious reasons.

So while I'm not saying it's bad for a show to shift from the original genre it was meant to be in(although it must be done carefully, otherwise it looks like you don't know what you're doing), and there is of course no wrong way to do Magical Girl(except for Madoka Magica and Yuki Yuna, do NOT go there!), it does make me wonder. And it's kind of disappointing, because I really love Magical Girl and I feel like shows like these could introduce the genre to a wider audience and could renovate it as well. But unfortunately they're going a different direction, and that makes me sad. If not for the transformation phrases/sequences and the fact that they have animal companions, I imagine most people would be totally clueless as to how on Earth this show counts as Magical Girl. It still counts as such for me, but it's deviating farther and farther away from the genre to the point where it becomes nigh unrecognizable, or like even the show writers forgot what genre it's supposed to be. Sadly.

Yeah, I can’t imagine how seeing this show must be like for people that are more savvy with magical girl shows. Me personally, I had to be told that it was a magical girl show because it honestly just gave off the “superhero show” vibes even with the magical girl-esque transformations.

Here, we have Ladybug and Chat Noir, who the writers keep being like “they’re equals” which... yeah, that’s fine but it doesn’t really work with the idea that this is a magical girl show? It's one thing to blame a character for something even when she's clearly written by a writer, because characters are supposed to be consistent yet flexible and have free will in-universe. But when she's written this inconsistently/it's obvious the writers have it out for her(to the point where they even say it) it is nigh impossible to pretend it's an aspect of the character herself and not the writers at fault. THAT'S where you draw the line between blaming the character vs the writer.

In fact, speaking of Luka, she also said that she wants the show to get rid of Luka because he's just a "plot device" and has no reason to like her beyond the fact that she's a "funny girl". She also said that Luka is a stereotype of the "cute bad boys who are emo", when that's blatantly untrue. She's allowed to not like Lukanette but all the things she's saying really ignore the point of his character and that his life DOESN'T revolve around Marinette; the writers simply don't respect him.

Even worse, she contradicted herself by saying that Lukanette is pointless because "we all know that Marinette is going to get with Adrien; it's endgame so why does the show even bother with Luka?" Then right after that says that Kagami's okay and that it's okay for Adrien to move onto Kagami because Ladybug has rejected him as Chat so many times(which is apparently not the case for Adriennette because "MaRiNeTtE's JuSt InCoMpEtEnT" right?). So teenage girls aren't allowed to like other boys or date more than one boy, yet teenage boys can date as many chicks as they like. Nice.

And apparently, any problem in a relationship or potential relationship is the girl's fault no matter what. She can't approach him because Goddess forbid girls not always be perfect and capable? She's incompetent and it's all her fault she can't properly talk to a perfectly nice, cute, FAMOUS boy. She rejects him every time he confesses despite him knowing it will fail. Her fault for being mean and not giving him a chance. She gets tired of chasing him and decides to look at someone else since it's not like she's legally married to Boy #1? She should stick with the original boy since they're gonna get together anyway. He gets tired of chasing her and decides to look at someone else since it's not like he's legally married to Girl #1? She should've realized his feelings for her and returned them since they're gonna be endgame anyway. Has this lady ever even been a teenage girl?

Plenty of teenage girls get tongue-tied around the one they love even if he or she is a perfectly nice, sweet person, it doesn't mean they're incompetent(especially when the girls are fictional characters in a world set out to punish them for not making progress and for trying to make progress at the same time, and the fact that the boy is a celebrity who is always made oblivious and kept distant enough from the girl so she can keep putting him on a pedestal and never truly get to know him). Plenty of teenage girls lose interest in one boy and so fall for another. Yet it's somehow only okay for boys to do it? Seriously?

And then for the episode "Ladybug", the reviewer continues to rag on Marinette, blaming her for the fact that her reaction to getting expelled was "I can't let that nasty Hawkmoth win", claiming she wasn't reacting like a normal teen or human in general would react in that scenario, completely ignoring the fact that it's TIKKI who doesn't comfort Marinette and forces her to focus on her duties as Ladybug and almost getting akumatized. She's right about the plot moving too fast, but she doesn't take into account WHY it's moving too fast, because the show doesn't focus on Marinette's inner struggle and what she has to go through. Instead of giving her time to process her thoughts after all that goes on and providing Tikki as a source of comfort and support(which she's, you know, SUPPOSED to be), they make Tikki berate her and force Marinette to push it to the side.

She's never allowed to feel. And that's why it hurts all the more when this woman insults Marinette for her perceived ineptitude, and she's fully allowed to dislike Marinette, critique her behaviors, dislike Luka, critique his role in the story etc., just don't reinforce a double standard as you do so and look closer: ultimately most of Marinette's problems are due to her not being permitted to FEEL. She's not allowed to be nervously in love, or be calm, or be offended, or be just not ready.

The writers keep pushing her in one direction, to be emotionless, to be selfless, to be nice, to be honest, to be "the mature/responsible one" to be a perfect little "Purrincess", to not push for or want anything for herself, even though the show is supposed to be about girl power! She does somewhat touch on that by saying that Ladybug never gets to "take a hit" and that the Marichat scene in Glaciator was too short, but she never goes into why everything is too-fast paced. And if she did, she wouldn't be saying everything she does about Marinette and Luka. Because Luka is more than just the "plot device" she dismisses him as.

He's like a calm oasis, the apple of the hurricane who keeps Marinette calm and just lets. her. breathe. He's possibly the only person who doesn't berate her, who doesn't mimic her, who doesn't insult her, who doesn't ignore her. And the one time he does, he apologizes RIGHT AWAY when he sees how sad she looks. And the funny thing is, I used to hate that scene, because when I first saw it, I thought "Oh man! Luka did the same thing as everyone else did once!" But now I see that it serves as a contrast, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to the other characters in the show. Whereas they never apologize for how they treat Marinette(and often she somehow ends up apologizing instead, sadly) and in fact seem oblivious to it at times or just don't care, Luka notices, Luka cares, and Luka apologizes. That shows that he cares about her and her feelings, unlike the rest of the characters in the show.

And while they do care about her, they're never held accountable for how they treat her. Anarka and Plagg are probably the only exceptions that I can think of(who contribute to the plot of course), but they're obviously not love interests, and the video doesn't talk about them, so I won't talk about them either. But my point is that this review, while good in other ways, is still problematic in this regard, for how it completely ignores Marinette's struggles and how they affect her, as well as the value of Luka's character(even if the show doesn't recognize it at times) and the POSITIVE effect they have on each other(especially since he actually, genuinely, wholeheartedly loves her and is patient with her, since Adrien is barely even her friend and Chat is pushy and entitled. And he has a life outside of her too, which this video chooses to ignore.)! So yeah, I'm sorry this took so long, but I just had to protect my favorite characters because that video did them so dirty. Thank you for coming to my Lukanette Ted Talk! Have a miraculous day! ;3

Can I just say wow??

Firstly, kudos to you for having the patience to not only write all of that, but simultaneous deal within Tumblr’s limitations while doing so? I almost wish I had a video detailing all of these topics (not exactly a video response to that person, but just detailing all of this without explicitly calling people out).

Secondly, I absolutely, 100% feel you on the double standards. I have seen so much hypocrisy in my experiences and it’s insane how people will bash Marinette relentlessly and then let Adrien off with a bunch of excuses, or hate Luka for essentially existing and then accept Kagami.

I also hate the idea of disliking Luka because he’s there to make Marinette feel better, and then liking Kagami because she causes conflict, like the implication is that conflict equals good and things that make Marinette feel loved and cared for are bad because love square endgame, I guess.

It’s exhausting, especially when Marinette is fourteen, clearly tries, but is getting no support. Like, have you ever thought how weird it was that Tom and Sabine seemingly knew back in “Gamer” that Marinette was crushing on Adrien, but in “Weredad,” they don’t worry about the fact that Marinette is into someone else or wonder what might’ve happened with Adrien, like if he might’ve hurt her in some way? If the assumption is, “oh, they just think that’s a teenage thing, flip-flopping between love interests,” well... Tom clearly takes what he thinks to be her current crush very seriously, and even if it was true that they presume she’s just flip-flopping, that really doesn’t show them to see Marinette as more than just a clumsy teenager-in-love stereotype.

So yeah, the characters who are meant to be there to support her ask no questions, but here’s Luka with his sweet “you can tell me everything or nothing, you can be yourself around me,” line, and yet... Luka is the problem???

Relating to the ask about Marinette imagining the events of the series. For me it would be realistic as I sort of see myself in her position for some parts, especially how her friends are represent (mainly Alya) and I can see myself picturing the events of the story (surrounding them) to some extent.

I'm continuing on to explain and rant about how I relate to Marinette. So about Alya's pushiness with Marinette's crush and how she won't let her move on. I used to be sort of friends with this person and one day we hanging out at school and she started badgering me to tell her who my crush was, even though I told her I didn't have one (I didn't have one but even if I did it wasn't her business, especially because we hadn't really interacted for a couple years).

She pressured me enough that I felt the need to make up a person, then she called me out just after I did it because she knew I was lying but didn't realise how uncomfortable I was lucky we were by ourselves so no one could hear how embarrassing it was. It still is but I sort have gotten over it (that's why I'm hear complaining). For her being made to sit by herself because everyone else paired of, I can relate.

I have never been the person who is really close with the friend group (probably because I'm quiet and struggle to interact with others), but I still I hang out during class time, but there have been times when two of the friends sat together and the other friend chose not to sit with me but just in front of me (the tables can fit two people at them) until one friend I went to primary school asked "what about [me]", so them she sat next to me.

The person I went to primary school with also has chosen to sit with the person who was not to sit with me so she could sit closer to the other two friends diagonally across from me on the table next to mine. I can understand Marinette in The Chameleon for how she would of felt when her friends turned in because I am left wondering if my friends even like me, although primary school friend sometimes tried to get to wait with them when we were waiting for the teacher to show up.

As I mentioned earlier I anxious when trying to interact with people who are even considered my friends so I wait for them to invite me to hangout with them. And for the ending of The Chameleon when everything went back to normal, in primary school we had this task we were told research a person and write a biography on them so as the teacher told us we were writing a good copy and the work in our books was a rough draft.

I wrote the information down as I would the good copy to make sure I was happy with it. When we were writing the good copy, I started to worry I had done something wrong as I had seen my friends work and they bith had just written down the facts. So as my friends and I kept having arguments and fights so I told them that I hoped I remembered to spell all the names correctly because they were not names I was knew how to spell which was true so they didn't question it as I could tell they did

yknow.. i kinda wanna talk about the difference between a retcon and a reveal for a minute, just cause i see those words thrown around a lot (particularly wrt kh) and i think a lot of people don’t really grasp the difference between them sometimes, so i just wanna delve into it a bit if ya’ll don’t mind indulging me.

im also going to preface this by saying that none of these are inherently bad (yes even retcons). and all are probably going to be present in any story medium the longer it exists. all the examples are gonna be kh based bc that’s where my brain lives and bc it’s such a long running series it has plenty of examples of both

so first off. retcon

a Retcon is short for retroactive continuity. it’s when a writer explicitely changes past parts of a story to suit their current needs (or ignores them). this is the one that’s usually used with the most derision, and well.. it’s because yeah, the most glaring retcons tend to be handled badly. sometimes a thing needs to be retconned however. like tifa saying a slur in the OG ff7. we did not need that.

retcon example: in Dream Drop Distance, Young Xehanort lists the three rules of time travel, which is integral to the Big Villain Plot going forward. 1. you cannot take your body. 2. you will not remember your experiances in the other time. 3. you can only travel to points where some version of yourself already exists. however previously in kh2, sora visited Timeless River (Disney Castle in the distant past) and appears to have broken all three of these rules, having not existed on that world (or probably at all that far back), taking his body, and remembering it all afterwards (probably? i think).*

*this being said there remains every possibility that this could still end up being explained somehow. it’s kh it can do that.

A Reveal on the other hand is when the audience is deliberately misled about what is happening in the story, only to have the truth shown later on. Most people know this as a Twist, but many Twists i feel lack the buildup and foreshadowing a good Reveal has (imo). KH is littered with reveals, reveling in it’s winding and confusing plot (despite what people say, it has extremely consistent internal logic considering the length and breadth of the series, it’s just presented in a confounding and often nonlinear manner) to keep people guessing.

a good reveal example (and one that many accuse of being a retcon), is that nobodies can regrow their hearts, which was given in DDD. accusations that this is a retcon are innacurate due to the sheer amount of evidence from as early as Chain of Memories (where nobodies as a concept were first introduced, though i don’t beleive they use that name or explain what they are until kh2) that nobodies could in fact feel things. the reason this gets called a retcon is i think largely because many, many characters outright state it as fact that nobodies cannot feel, and the audience simply goes along with it. however, most of these characters, while they do beleive in their words, are wrong (yen sid, most of the Org13), and the remainder are outright lying (xemnas, xigbar). The key difference is whether clues were left for the audience to follow, or if in hindsight the new information makes perfect sense (which it does).

using old things in new ways is a thing i don’t have a snappy word for but i think is a further subsection of this, bc it’s neither really a retcon nor a reveal in that it does not have the necessary forethought to be a reveal but it doesn’t actively contradict anything stated previously either like a retcon. this one is also harder to pin down as it often requires Word Of God to be confirmed, and otherwise is mostly speculation. you can kinda get a feel for this sort of thing though, if you’re paying attention. some writers are better at it that others, and as always this can be subjective. (personally i think nomura is a mastermind at this sort of thing, incorporating old, completely innocuous things in incredible new ways almost seemlessly, and giving them a whole new context without breaking the narrative)

A good example of this would be the Hollow Bastion science pods, which existed in a single room in KH1 and were left completely alone for another 17 years (*17? ish). Given that the first game in the series is more or less completely self contained and the possibility of it’s continuation not at all a guaruntee, i am inclined to doubt nomura had planned that small detail so far in advance when khux probably hadn’t even been seeded as an idea yet.

and finally Not Anything Actually is when Word Of God says something one time in an interview ten+ years ago and then had a better idea later. that’s just called writing, it’s not a retcon stop calling it a retcon.

Aight the time has come

TMA / DIVINE COMEDY META POST

I loved their idea and really think they're onto something with that, there are quite a few parallels in the whole Two Men, One Of Which Non-Mortal and with Absolute, Supernatural Knowledge, Going Through an Hellscape.

Source for this is gonna be the three years I spent studying the Divine Comedy as part of my Classics high school degree, and also the hyperfixation I had on it when I was 12 - buckle up!

The thing I really love about the Divine Comedy and the way Dante describes the soul in Inferno (hell) specifically is the lack of judgement which seems so counterintuitive like

Medieval Europe was a time where mankind - and especially writers - abode rules very strictly, subjectivity and personal feelings weren't something important. Writing was symbolic. I think it's something people overlook a lot when they do those "Dante just wrote a self insert fic!" posts about the Divine Comedy and similar like yes yes absolutely he did and he got to hang out with his literary bud Virgil, but to him that was very different than what self insert fics are to us today. He's writing himself as a symbol for all humanity (he's well intentioned, but a cishet white man nonetheless), and then he needed someone to show him around. A dead person that to him represented Moral and Knowledge so naturally he goes "oh yeah Virgil is that. Obviously." - TO HIM that's simply the most obvious thing because Virgil is the author of the Epic Poem that founded Roman culture, the Aeneid, so if he's gonna write the next Epic Poem to found Florence/Italy's value (Italy wasn't a thing yet but he still uses the word) he HAS to be guided by who did it before him.

Jonny Sims does know his fair share of classical myth as proved by his work with the Mechs, Ulysses dies at Dawn has some slightly niche references that did impress me (I don’t know a lot of the mechs’ creative process tho so it might just not be him writing those bits in the album?)

I don't know if any of this is useful for metas but I definitely do think the fact that Virgil does not get to be in Heaven at all, no matter how good he is, is interesting if we compare it to Jon because he is doing his Best to not eat people, and not give in to his nature, but eventually we all know it is not gonna go well. In the Divine Comedy - Purgatory specifically - Dante has to leave Virgil behind before going to Heaven, and it's one of the most tear jerking bits of the whole work. We read it in class and there were literally 30 teens sobbing.

But this is a massive tangent on the issue of judgement which is where I think the juicy TMA parallel can also be bc as I was saying everything in medieval times follows very specific rules. The rules the Church has decided, and the Church is seen to be the absolute power of God.

So no matter how Dante feels about morality, that Truth is there. An excellent example of this is the circle of Sodomy - aka homosexuality: there Dante finds his teacher, a person he loved and admired. He feels immensely sorry for him and he shows him all the affection and respect he has for him. This most likely reflects Dante's real, personal opinion on homosexuality. however if the Church and therefore God says u go to hell for being gay, it's out of Dante's hands. U go to hell. So he cannot change that, even in a text that he himself is writing, cause it’s not about his own pov at all - he's writing a poem to reflect the word of God and he's showing how even "sinners" are just human and some sinners did literally NOTHING wrong on a human level but still end up there.

I think when it comes to TMA this is pretty similar to how Jon feels about the Avatars. Some of them are awful evil people eaters like Not!Sasha, and some sort of stumbled into it and while they might not be great people it's really not their fault either (the kid I can't remember the name of, or Oliver Banks, and so on)

And they all ARE monsters in the same way Jon also is a monster and doesn't really shy away from that anymore, but also there isn't that much judgement in that state of monstrousness. Sometimes no matter what you do you end up in Hell.

(Also the “punishments” work in a very Dantesque way where what you were most afraid of in your past life is coming back to torment you forever.)

Hmm oof i am probably not the best person to be asking this cause I dont write fics or anything but I’ll do my best

So i realized that i just wrote plot stuff but im posting anyway cause i spent way too long on this ahaha

Headcanons:

Khun would be that subtle overprotective boyfriend 

He’d just kinda silently watch from afar but he’d totally kill anybody who hurt bam in any way, shape, or form

But he’d like be SUPER sweet with bam like

Pet names yall PET NAMES like khun and bam would prob both mutually melt when they call each other pet names

Khun would always help bam with hw and whatnot, let’s pretend bam’s a physics genius cause thats just how i imagine him in modern life, always has trouble with law class (he’s  taking it just for khun so he can understand what khun’s talking about) so khun helps him

Khun would be a super smooth talker, can woo a n y b o d y, exceptional at speeches, captain of speech and debate team

Khun would never admit he’s jealous but like the whole gang would know (except for bam who’s clueless as usual) 

Like bam is friendly with everybody so khun’d just be like ugh screw yall 

But then bam always confides in him and spends a crapload amt of time with him so he knows he’s just doubting himself and he’s mad at himself about it cause he knows bam is loyal to a fault and would never betray him

Poet!khun and uni student!bam as a literature major who’s a big fan and wanted to meet khun at one of his signings but is too shy even though shibisu drags him there, accidentally bumps into khun in the bathroom, is all flustered, ends up talking to khun for super long, khun loves bam’s enthusiasm for the subject, offers to give feedback on bam’s poems, bam is literally about to combust, they have lots of meetings and khun flirts with bam who’s clueless but blushes a lot anyway, they kiss *ahem* the rest is history

Spy!khun and bam, khun realizing he doesn’t want to hurt bam, sends fake info back to his country (ruled by eduan and jahad), eduan finds out (sent khun out in the first place bc khun was a threat to him cause the ppl liked khun better), sends out an assassin to get khun, who knows this and escapes with bam somewhere, some complicated plot taht idk how to figure out but you get the drift, eventually khun rules the country with bam

Real estate agent khun and contractor bam, eventually start their own business together

Khun as student pres, also known as the ice king bc he’s turned down dating everyone who asked, bam as the transfer student who catches his attention  (bam with more of a jue viole grace complex), the silent physics genius who is also on par with khun when debating in speech and debate club
