“Heliophobia”

This book was created during winter on the far northern hemisphere were sunlight is almost obliterated during the worst period. After illustrating for a good ten hours, I felt the need to get energized and decided to do something I hadn’t done in more than a decade, visit a tanning salon.

When I got there, there were no major differences from my youth except there was no staff present. So I chose a booth, cleaned the bed, put coins into the machine and headphones in my ears. When I closed the lid the whole bed felt a little raggedy, but I was tired and didn’t think much about it. After a couple of minutes it started feeling really hot, so I went up to check the settings. When I lifted the lid I heard a bang and everything turned black.

When I woke up, I saw the brightest light I ever saw. The clasp must have broken and the entire lid had fallen on top of me which made it impossible to move. I don’t know how long I was out or why the fluorescent tubes didn’t turn off, but It felt like my skin was burning, boiling and melting at the same time. Whatever I tried to do, I felt the pain of burnt flesh being scraped of my bones. Finally the light took over and I walked in to it.

“Ophidiophobia”

It was when my neighbor asked me to help him move a table that I realized he had an entire wall turned into a terrarium. He saw me being quite shocked and just said, “Yep, thats my baby. She’s a blue coral snake, beautiful but deadly. Need to keep antivenom here so I don’t go into paralysis if she bites.” He thanked me for my help and I went back home.

A couple of weeks later I heard some weird noises from my neighbors apartment, so I went over to see if everything was alright. He opened the door a bit sweaty and nervous. “You ok?” I asked. “Yeah sure, I just lost my......keys. Thanks for asking”, he said before shutting the door. I went back home, had myself a chill evening and fell asleep.

I woke up in the middle of the night with a feeling that I wasn’t alone. Before I could get up to check, I felt something biting my leg. Seconds after my muscles started cramping, it felt like I turned to stone while the snake crawled up my leg. The snake continued to linger up my body, I tried to grab it but I couldn’t move. The last thing I felt was the snake crawling into my mouth.
