also i agreeee. jaemin would be a good doctor. honestly i totally get why his goal before becoming an idol was to be a surgeon. it works so well with his personality. all doctors i know are weird as hell but also calm as hell 😭😂😭😂
and i think his general personality kind of fits being a doctor bcs he cares so much for people and their wellbeing? and is really patient. the amount of times my parents come home ranting bcs they had to explain smtg to a patient over and over and the patient was being irritating is astronomical. like obv they can’t snap at the patient 😭 but when they’re home they legit sit together and rant about their day with all the annoying people they had to deal with.
exactly!! also i feel like with his introverted nature he’d really suit being a doctor since like you don’t get a lot of like real social time ig? idk how to explain it but he’d be in working mode most of the time and then he would be able to hibernate as introverts do cjjfnf
i also love the idea of jaem and the reader siting down and just saying “go” and they each rant about their day and the patients and the new residents and the chief of surgery who was being an ass

oKAY! yellow!! we shall continue.
doctor dramaaaaaa
this one’s real fun because it’s all super petty. sometimes doctors will just.... refer their patients to another doctor??? when they’re lazy??? it’s so weird to me. and most of the time the other doctor can’t refuse. this usually happens on clinic days in the hospital (usually fridays for my parents). often this leads to hospital beef because sometimes some doctors will refuse the referral saying they’re too busy 💀 so now the first doctor HAS to do it.
some doctors (again, lazy ones) tend to do this thing where they kiss ass a senior doctor and make them do their cases. like they’ll be like “oh can you help me i dont know how to do this” and before you know it, the senior doctor is the one doing their work while they just stand there or even sometimes leave to go get them both coffee”. the senior doctors often can’t refuse if there aren’t enough doctors in the department or if the patient is in need of immediate care. also, just bcs you’re a senior doctor doesn’t mean you outrank someone. if you’re both medical officers, you’re of the same rank :/ sometimes 50 year old doctors have 30 year old bosses if the younger one passed their exam and became a specialist.
doctors vs. nurses. this isn’t universal. it’s more of... certain doctor’s experiences. but some nurses can be quite rude and gang up against a doctor. especially when the doctor needs something to be done. like the nurses can just... not do it. or ask the doctor to it themselves. and it leads to a lot of fighting behind the scenes. my dad never has this problem cause the nurses all have a crush on him 😭😭😭 and he’s real charming around the hospital. but my MUM!! ugh. nurses are so mean to her :( i’m convinced they attack her bcs they’re jealous istg. they always compliment my dad but are mean to my mum. it never happened in her old hospital. but this new one...yikes.
houseman drama. ugh this one’s a big one. these days there’s a lot of rich kids who end up in medical colleges and become doctors bcs their parents can pay a hefty amount. and they kind of have this... attitude of not doing much work. so if you’re a doctor working at a university hospital, you’ll come across them a lot. they won’t get their work done, they’ll have excuses for everything and they’ll act like complete know it alls.
once my uncle had this houseman that refused to tag in the operation theatre (tagging is smtg medical graduates do where they kind of follow medical officers and observe what they’re doing to learn). anyway. so this girl was like “oh can’t stand in the operation theatre because i get dizzy very easily if i stand for long hours”. and my uncle was like 🤨🤨 okay...? but he let her sit it out. then the day hour he saw her and she was sprinting around here and there, jumping about and using her phone. so he confronted her and he was like “i let you sit out on a very crucial part of your housemanship today because i thought you were actually sick but you’re here looking as fit as ever. you do realise you lied about your health to a doctor, right? you think i can’t see when a patient is lying to me? i still let you sit it out. but you aren’t taking your job seriously. one more time and you’re out of here. i mean it. i don’t care if you get offended. you can take it heart, take it to kidney, whatever. tomorrow you’re tagging and if you don’t, i will personally write a report”. needless to say, that houseman is now both scared of my uncle but also hates him 😶 kinda deserved tho.
ooo another houseman story! so like... sometimes senior doctors can be brutal. even if you’re a medical officer and it’s your specialist/consultant talking to you. they will not hesitate to insult you in the middle of the ward, in front of the patients. so yeah. this happens from time to time. my dad’s done this to his houseman before bcs he made an INSANE mistake that almost cost a patient their life. and it’s happened to my dad when he was younger where he forgot some treatment’s name or smtg and his consultant decided to embarrass him in front of the patients and other doctors 💀 yikes.
are housemen like residents then? (i watched too much grey’s anatomy when i was younger i only know how their hospital works fjjfjf) bc for that fic i was thinking the reader and jaemin can both be doctors right after their last year of residency and i just looooove resident drama
i was also thinking about using that referral drama yesterday!! i might work that in somewhere too

ooo doctor jaemin. let’s see....
you wanna maybe do something like doctor strange? not the superhero part but... stephen strange’s personality. he’s a successful doctor and he’s a lil cocky, meets this lady who was accompanying her idk parent or friend or smtg to the hospital and she’s immediately unimpressed by how standoffish he comes off. whenever he’s sarcastic with her, she quips back which only intrigued him further.
it can be like... an enemies to lovers slow burn kind of thing? with a bunch of angst bcs stephen strange do be an angsty character that made a bunch of wrong choices and lost the woman he loved bcs of it. but like you can make jaem and reader have a happy ending ahhahha
unless you’re not looking for a longer fic idea. as a blurb all i can think of is like... a time stamp? him wanting comfort after a long shift being on call. he comes home late in the evening and he’s dead tired from a surgery that lasted 12 hours and reader’s already home ready to shower him with love and affection and listen to him whine about his housemen that almost messed up a report or the rude patient that filed a complaint because he “didn’t smile and was not friendly” when really he’d been polite all day. but now he has to write a stupid reflection to send to his boss explaining the event and why he got a complaint.
(lmk if you want detailed experiences of daily doctor activities lol. my whole family, from my grandparents up to my cousins are all doctors so it’s all i hear)
okay okay i love ALL OF THESE especially the doctor strange one like,,,, cocky arrogant jaemin??? yes pleasee!! aaanndd that actually fits with the little idea i had hhmmmm
also i’ll definitely be taking you up on that doctor experience!! thank you sooo much for sending this in you’ve been a great help aaahhh

heheh i did check the tags!! and sure! i’d love to help out more. dm me any time you want.
also, uhh i think it’s a bit of both, actually. it’s not as dramatic as western media makes it out to be. but my parents have had days where they come home when they’re on call to put us to sleep when we were younger. but that was mainly when we lived 5 min away from the hospital.
but yeah there have been times my parents were at home and suddenly they’d get a call and have to go. but it’s all very... calm. like “hello? oh is dr. xyz not available? okay i’m on my way”. and then they just get up and leave.
or they’d come home and stay in their scrubs, drop off some food, check on how we’re doing. and then go back. sometimes i’d get scolded if i had to do smtg quick cause my mum would be like “i’m on call, hurry up. i don’t have a lot of time i need to be back”.
also, if you’re in a department that isn’t as busy, you can leave and be at home even when you’re on call. you’re not supposed to. but you can. once dad took me grocery shopping when he was on call and his boss was at the supermarket 💀 so he was like... sneaking around and trying to avoid him. it worked for exactly 5 minutes before he gave up and was like “lemme just go say hi to my boss real quick and explain why i’m here so he doesn’t assume i’m slacking” 😂😂😂
BDJDJDHS THAT MADE ME LAUGH I CAN IMAGINE A FULLY GROWN MAN LIKE HIDING BEHIND THE FISH REFRIGERATOR CNFJFJBF
yeah i would assume it’s a bit of both! it’s just always been weird like they go home and have drinks and stuff and miraculously none of them are on call or even get called ?? idk maybe i’m being clueless bc that’s likely as well fjfnf
also! thank you for letting me pick your brain about this! i truly appreciate it!

okay final one!!! this one’s a little sad. well, not really. but i guess some people would find it sad. i don’t. maybe bcs i’m desensitised lol
so doctors deal with so much death, that death becomes a banal, everyday thing for them. so if a patient dies, the doctor doesn’t cry or get emotional like they show it in TV shows. very rarely does that happen. and often it happens to very very new doctors. but even with a few years in, you’re used to people dying so much that you stop caring.
i asked my aunt about this once and she painted a picture for me. she said that sometimes you can save a patient, sometimes you can’t. it’s not really in the doctor’s hands sometimes. all they can do is try their best. that’s something you have to accept as a doctor. so if a patient dies, they walk out, give the family the bad news in the most respectful way. and then they walk to the back where the pantry is and stuff and continue chatting and laughing about things like normal. as if they didn’t just witness someone die before their eyes. they just... get so used to it that it no longer matters.
often for some doctors this also means that if you’re mildly sick, they won’t care. like if you have a fever? “oh you’ll be fine. here take these meds. you’ll sweat it out”. or once i had a stomachache and my parents didn’t believe me. until my non-doctor aunt was like “i don’t think it’s a basic ache. she seems to be in a lot of pain”. and they took me to the paediatrician and found out i was hours away from my appendix bursting and had to go in for an emergency surgery 💀 so yeah! you’d think doctors would worry more but really they get very chill about illnesses that they know can be treated. that doesn’t mean they won’t like... care for you. my mum tends to baby me quite a bit when i have a fever. but i think it’s more bcs she can tell i want to be taken care of. she’s not actually worried unless the fever is like 40 degrees. not all doctors are like this tho. i have friends who’s doctor parents get very strict about health and stuff but overall doctors are pretty chill. nothing really phases them.
i think in general to be a doctor you have to be kind of calm and composed. you can’t be frantic and panicky. because you’ll cause the patient to panic. so they’re just very... calm under pressure. it’s because as med students they go through hell and back. so they’re just so used to being under high stress situations. it’s really an insane talent. every doctor i’ve met is just always so... calm. and they make you calm. it’s really nice ^^
i thought it was a bit unrealistic?? like things happen in my life all the time and when i tell people how i feel they’re like woah what how are you okay rn and i’m like bro this is a tuesday for me dw cjjfjf
i was also thinking of doing something with losing a patient hmmmm...

oh yeah of course!! i don’t watch medical dramas bcs ever since i was small my family would complain over every scene and how the show gets every single protocol wrong. i mean i get that they do it for the drama. but it’s really not that dramatic usually 🥴
but yeah it’s not bad at all! it’s a part of life. and it’s weird when people show doctors crying over losing a patient. unless you’re a friend or a family member, they will not care. doctors are sympathetic and ready to help. and they take on a lot of pressure to make sure people are okay. but at one point, they kind of lose their empathy and completely disconnect emotions from their job. which is fine. tbh i myself am pretty desensitised bcs i hear about this stuff ALLLL the time.
oh also! another tiny detail. a lot of doctors have a bunch of pics and videos of wounds, surgeries, cut off limbs, tumours, x-rays, etc in their phones 😭 i used to have my icloud linked with my dad and istg all i saw was severed fingers and sewed up legs 🤚🏻 it’s a lot.
HELP DO THEY LIKE COMPARE WHAT THEYVE HAD TO DO THAT DAY WITH EACH OTHER???? THAT WOULD BE SO FUNNY PLEASE FJFJBF

oh also!!! from the perspective of someone who lives with doctors, i’d say it’s definitely hard. doctors work very long hours and it’s really as difficult as people make it out to be. both of my parents are doctors so i spent my childhood mainly on my own. i don’t remember them being home much or being present at my school events because they were always on call. some nights they wouldn’t come home because being on call means sleeping at the hospital because you can get called for an emergency at any given minute.
so yeah! usually doctors tend to have relationships with other doctors because these people are all they have time to see. they don’t really get much free time to go out and meet people. most of the doctor x non doctor couples i know are either childhood friends or they got set up through a mutual friend. or it’s arranged lol. most of the doctors in my life come in pairs 😂😂😂 and yeah it’s really just bcs their lifestyle is so exhausting and they’re always so busy. there was a time i only saw my parents 4 times a week bcs they were doing double calls and they’d come home while i was at school and be gone by the time i came back. ORR they’d come back late in the evening and just sleep. once my mum had a 16 hour long surgery and she hasn’t slept in 60 hours so she came home in her scrubs and just collapsed on the bed. then woke up the next morning and was off to work.
so yeah! if you’re writing a doctor jaemin with a reader that isn’t a doctor... this would be a crucial point. doctors don’t have a lot of time. they do get some in between but they’re so tired usually that it’s hard to do anything but stay indoors and sleep. it gets easier as they age. like the older you get, the higher your rank, the less work you have. you have bigger responsibilities but you don’t work as much so you get to rest more. but young doctors have it rough. once you’re a specialist or consultant though, you get to rest more because your MOs will do most of the work and you’re just there to kind of... supervise.
oh! they showed that sleeping in the hospital and getting called for an emergency in hospital playlist! i thought that was more realistic than what i’ve seen on western medical shows bc like if you’re on call you’re not gonna rush home and then have to go back like as you walk in the door?
being away from people is really hard and yk your heart hurts when you have to be away from someone so idk if i could write that bc i’m so bad w angst like i get too into and i get sad fjjfjff
