Why do you write Steddie? 

They’re such a compelling and complementary pairing. Like, it seems like an opposites attract / odd-couple pairing on the surface, but beneath each of their exteriors, they’re so similar. They’re dork4dork, loser4loser, idiot4idiot, they’re both huge nerds but in different ways. They want and need and express affection through physical touch and words of affirmation (I mean, just look at the walking through the forest scene!) Plus they just have this insane chemistry that any time I think “there’s no way they did that, it’s all in my head”, I’ll go back and watch those scenes again, it’s just like “no, this absolutely checks out, they are so into each other from the word go”. And they’re just made for each other! I mean, come on! Matching scars? Nail bat and nail shield? Jock and nerd? They’re two halves of the same coin! What I really love about them too is that they’re both Just Some Guy, they’re silly, goofy, dorky guys! But mostly, I write steddie because it makes me happy and really satisfies part of my brain like nothing else. 

What’s your favorite trope to READ?

Other than “Eddie Munson Lives” hahah, I’ll try just about anything written or recommended by a beloved mutual. Mutual pining, fix-it’s, missing scenes, and first kiss fics are top tier for me, and right now I’m really partial to fluffy romcom fics. If it’s got good flirting and banter, it’s got me hooked.

What’s your favorite trope to WRITE?

My absolute favorite to write is mutual pining (aka the love is requited, they’re both just being stupid). Miscommunication is a close second, the kind that can’t easily be resolved with just a sticky note on the fridge. Whether it’s mishearing something or misunderstanding something (even the character misunderstanding their own feelings!), I find it super compelling to write. But for a specific scenario, my favorite will always be Steve having a bad time at a party.

What’s your favorite Steddie fic?

It’s impossible for me to pick just one, so I have to recommend 3 of my friends: Anyway It’s About Old Friends by @fragilecapric0rnn, and wanna be the only one for miles and miles (except for maybe you) by @judasofsuburbia, and everybody else (everybody else looks like they’ve figured it out) by @heybluechild. Anything by these fine folks is just fantastic, they’re all incredible writers and dear friends!

Is there a trope you’re excited to explore in a future work but haven’t yet?

I’d really like to write more AU’s! I’ve been tossing around ideas for college-aged+ aus (writing them a little older), 90s aus, a cowboy au… Mostly I’m just excited to keep writing them!

What is your writing process like?

Ahah it’s not much of a process. I write down every idea I have, no matter how small it is. Sometimes it’s a line of dialogue or a moment of a scene, but it all goes into the notes app and percolates in the back of my brain for a while. Eventually that dialogue or scene might coalesce into something bigger on its own, or combine with other snippets, and then ya got yourself a stew!

Do you have any writing quirks?

I really love writing dialogue, it’s my favorite way to get inside their heads, especially trying to balance what they say or don’t say, vs what they actually mean. I also love adding little details to fill out the world and the scene. It might not be necessary, but it feels like it brings everything together for me. And I like treating writing a fic like building a puzzle, trying to figure out just the right way to get all the pieces to fit together so the whole thing really sings.

Do you prefer posting when you’ve finished writing or on a schedule?

I’m still playing around with what I prefer. With driving in your car, I started out by posting a chapter only when the following chapter was completely written, so I’d always have one in the tank. But that got to feel too much like I was just sitting on chapters for the sake of sitting on them, so I started posting each chapter as I finished it and felt good about it. I don’t do super well with a schedule for posting fics, I’ve got too many deadlines in my life as it is haha.

Which fic are you most proud of?

driving in your car, for sure. It’s my baby, my magnum opus, my kitchen sink fic (it’s got everything). It’s got so much of myself in it, it’s very personal, and very near and dear to my heart.

How did you get the idea for driving in your car?

I wrote a long post about this when the idea was just starting to percolate, but the long and short of it is I wanted to read more fics that reflected my own experiences as an older teen growing up in a suffocating small town, where really the only option you have is to just pile in the car with your friends and drive around aimlessly, because that’s the only way you can get any freedom or privacy. I wanted to see what life was like for the fruity four trying to get back to “normal” while also trying to deal with the fact the world almost ended AGAIN, and all their complicated messy feelings for one another.

What inspired love is like ghosts?

Like many people have guessed / suspected, it’s very much inspired by Buzzfeed Unsolved / Watcher Ghost Files, and a loving homage to ghost hunting shows. I’m a huge scaredy cat when it comes to anything horror, but I love a good ghost hunting show. The study room setting is also inspired by the miniscule closet-sized study rooms in the library at the college I went to.

What was your favorite part to write from love is like ghosts?

Parts of their make out scene was the first snippet I wrote and the one that really got the whole ball rolling with that fic, to try to figure out who this Steve and this Eddie are, and what would have to happen lead them to making out that hard in the study room. It was also the first steamy spicy almost-smutty scene I’d written, and it was so fun to learn how to write like that!! I also just love their banter in this fic, they’re both so sassy and ridiculous and completely gone on each other.

How do/did you feel writing where’s the spark??

Ooft this one was a doozy. This is actually the second draft, and the only time so far I’ve all but completely scraped the first draft and rewritten a fic. The first draft leaned really heavily into the loneliness of the holidays, my playlist for it was all of the most maudlin holiday songs, and it really started negatively affecting my mood and mindset. But I got some really great advice and help brainstorming from dear friends, and turned it around into a fic I’m really happy with. The holiday blues are still present, but there’s so much more love there now, and that’s really what the fic is all about.

What was the most difficult part of writing where’s the spark??

Finding that balance of holiday blues and love was really tricky, and I wrote for a lot of characters I hadn’t tried writing before either. From a technical perspective too, it was a big challenge to figure out how to keep the fic moving, and the party moving around Steve when all he wanted to do was wallow.

Do you have a favorite scene and/or line from any of your fics?

It’s so so hard to pick just one, but I love how this line in love is like ghosts turned out: And Steve is dumbstruck, kiss-drunk, half-fucked.

Do you have any upcoming projects or fics you’d like to share/promote?

I have a holiday exchange fic coming out soon (hopefully before the holidays, fingers crossed), and I’m excited to dive into my prompt for lex’s winter fic challenge soon! I’d love to get the last chapter of driving in your car ready to share by the end of January. And there’s a secret [redacted] au I’m co-authoring with a very special friend that I would absolutely love to write in the new year!

Outside of these questions, Is there anything YOU would like to add?

Just that I love this community so much. I’ve made so many incredible friendships because of this show, and I’m so grateful to be a part of this little corner of the internet. I never shared my writing publicly before finding the steddie community, and I’ve been really overwhelmed and delighted by the response to my writing and art (especially to be nominated to do something like this!! Truly an honor!). I was, at best, a casual Stranger Things fan before season 4. I wasn’t even going to watch it when it came out. But then I saw all the gorgeous fanart and gifs, and started reading headcanons, and had to check it out. I’m so so glad that I did, my life has changed so much for the better.

wibta for using characters that might be too similar to ex friends for my own writing/art?

background: i had a lot of friendships that ended very badly while i was in an extremely compromised state. for a lot of them it ended with them giving me a very vague wall of text about my behaviour without explicitly telling me what i did wrong, so i feel i cannot apologize in any meaningful way, and i cannot contact them first, so instead tried my best to cut myself down as small as possible so they would never see me again. this still confuses me, and ive entertained the thought they were 'too scared' to tell me what i did wrong beforehand, but if thats the case, i was too, but i was the only one wanting to work things out. that isn't the point of this, though.

with a lot of these people i did something like collaborative worldbuilding. some of these concepts, ocs and oc ships i was very very invested in while i was at rock bottom, sort of coping with them, though the interest never felt reciprocated despite my efforts to stoke it (neither was i told to stop, though). i wrote a lot for some of them, as certain characters had a lot of stylings of archetypes im very fond of and tend to write over and over again (partially cos they remind me a lot of myself, if i can project) regardless of their involvement.

with the rug pulled out from under my feet irt that i didnt really know what to do with my parts from all that (going from thinking about them almost once a day to having to stop myself from ever thinking of it again was. extremely hard) and even thought about trashing the characters i had. after months of deliberating and trying to refocus the characters to be single and building up casts of all my own characters, i ended up liking the chemistry between some of them and the old ocs i almost threw away and decided to work that angle. the more i focused on these new characters (which id created to be a vent pit for the feelings i was trying to sort out irt all this) the more they fit into those archetypes i love, but i tried to lead them away from the ex friends characters.

but i did give one character brain damage, while i was trying to figure out what mine had done to me. ive been coping with it and what it did to me through them, but i remembered one ex friend gave their character brain damage as well. it feels like a sort of stand out trait and im worried if they ever see my shit again they will look at this and the archetype and use this as evidence im trying to steal their character or something. im not sure what is too similar. fwiw when they cut people off before in this sort of situation i know they would make fun of and kill off the other person's characters, so i know they've probably done that to expies of mine (one person liked to joke about doing this to one of my happier characters while we were still talking). for my part all i did was axe theirs from the story entirely.

tldr: i accidentally created characters that have similarities to ex friends' to fill in the holes for characters i didn't want to throw out. if i keep them, will i be an asshole?

I’m placing these in one post. These ones linked + other minor ones from the past few days since the drama’s premiere.

yibo and shengyang similarity “when what you love becomes a career.” , covernat, them as the sun and pechoin ad spotted in sbms.

• XZ studio posted a video where shengyang was doing some hand tricks with Shengyang’s card. It was pretty sus to me cause it looked like something WYB will do. I can think of a few ways that he can show off SY’s ID card without doing this but he chose to do it that way. Is he influenced by WYB? Maybe he’s been watching Bobo do this a couple of time. Or WYB is teaching him to do it. We know how they like to try what the other’s hobby is. 🫶🏼

• In one of the SBMS BTS, GG is show drawing lots of sketches which is in line with his character. But it brings is back to those LRLG entries where it said that ZZ likes to draw for WYB.

• One of Shengyang’s work bag is something that is especially designed to also hold a motorcycle helmet. Hahahahahahaha! Why!!!!! I really have a feeling that Shenyang and WYB will get along cause they have similar styles. Do you think XZ was looking at stuff WYB was using and thought SY could use it? Of course not the expensive ones but more of the “look”.

• THEM!!!!!! I don’t care! They will always have amazing chemistry 🤍🤍🤍

• In one of the “letters” Shengyang left, there is a drawing that is obviously by XZ. CPFs have discovered that this is from an emoji and we think that it’s one of his favorite emoji pack to use, enough that he drew it.

It reminded us of the skull emoji (p2) WYB uses and that specific one, where it sort of “bows down” is what was captured that he used to reply on wechat. So they use different emoji packs, but the same action? Lol.

I will make a separate post if something comes up that stands out to me, if not, it will be in a Volume 2 post. tbh, this is not the first SMBS CPN post cause we had ones from the wrap. GG really feeds us well. ^^

I cant really think of any duos but id say just anyone who doesnt have chemistry HELP. So just imagine the opposite of what I’m gonna say now.

Cubscar is built on mutual respect and admiration, despite being fundamentally different as individuals they have many shared goals which is why they can work so well together.

They excel in what the other struggles to do so they form a very solid pair.

They also have similar mindsets, neither of them builds alliances on trust but rather their own interest so they never expect actual unconditional loyalty from each other, which helps TREMENDOUSLY. Chaos is always the ultimate goal, who cares if people get hurt?

There are no expectations, they’re free to do whatever they want and they wont hold grudges against each other unless its something really stupid and inconsequential.

They are a secret third thing. No one gets them like they get each other, they’ve shared so many moments and they’ve grown accustomed to every little quirk the other has. They are also incredibly ruthless and evil if needed and they often enable the other to do as they please.

I was going to talk about some OCs I made for my comic, but seeing as I think they're better suited to be introduced through that, I'll talk about some ocs I made for an abandoned project

You just gave me the opportunity to yap about them and their universe. I will probably never get around to doing anything with them, bc of other projects that take priority. But gosh! If money wasnt a problem, Id talk to a video game company about them!

We gotta start with Melanie.

Melanie is a college student who has had night terrors and sleep paralysis her whole life. She has hallucinations of shadowy creatures watching her from dark corners on the daily. One night she "breaks free" from her sleep paralysis and gets up to face one of the shadow creatures, but it slips away. She follows it and ends up in a hellish dimension, where she meets Candice.

Candice is a ghost, a poltergeist to be exact. She's very sweet, but a little gullible and very excitable. She doesn't remember her life before she came to this dimension, but every so often she gets glimpses into it. Nothing she sees has ever been very good, and it makes her really upset to remember any of it.

Part of the reason she's so trusting is because she doesn't remember who she is. She runs into this shadow demon named Whisp, and becomes incredibly close with her. Eventually Candice started living in this dusty laboratory she found, and she and Whisp stopped hanging out so much. Something about Whisp and the lab owner hating each other....

Candice has a bunch of ghost powers. She can pick up objects and mess with technology. If she feels strong emotions (intense anger for example,) the objects around her start flying around. She feels things very intensely so this tends to happen fairly often.

Candice finds out the lab is owned by Billius, my knock off bill cipher oc (basically after gravity falls ended me and my friend wrote stories of how we thought Bill would act at the end of weirdmaggedon.) Billius is a horribly depressed, angry, ex powerful demon who had all his powers stripped away after he tried to take over the entire hellscape. His punishment is to essentially live out a few millenias without his magic, which really sucks because this entire dimension relies on it to do everything.

The one thing they let him keep was invincibility and immortality. And he's um. Not happy about it, if you catch my drift.

Billius has thrown himself into studying "Earth magic." That is to say, science. His studies range from chemistry to computer science, but seeing as he has to rely on heavily outdated material (that, and he's not very good at following instructions) he tends to mess up a lot.

He doesn't like Candice very much. He finds her incredibly annoying. Ghosts aren't a common species in this dimension (not in his part of it, anyway), so for his entire existence he had no idea they were real. That is, until about a decade ago, his technology started going haywire and lab equipment started floating in the air. Billius thought he was going crazy and talked to his partner Argus about it. She broke the news his lab was being haunted, which he promptly laughed in her face over... Candice quickly introduced herself after.

Argus is a "political figure" in this world. I use the term political figure loosely. They're what people on Earth would call an angel, but she's very much a demon based on this universe's standards. They're one of the powerful beings that stripped Billius of his powers, and thought ":) wow. He's kind of pathetic. I like that in a guy" and they started to get to know each other while he was doing community service. She keeps Billius on the right track, and basically sprays him with water like a cat whenever he starts doing "bad things" again.

Gonna circle back. Candice and Billius had a one sided friendship for the longest time. Once Billius found out ghosts existed, he changed his studies to ghost biology. Candice became his lab rat, and he began running tests on her to figure out "how she works."

These tests were incredibly painful but Candice went along with it, because she fully trusted Billius. It wasn't until Argus + another oc (whom I will not be talking about as he's not my own oc, but in fact my friends oc) called him out on his bullshit, that Candice realized "friends don't hurt friends"

Candice exploded. Argus, Billius, and the unnamed oc got to witness the full extent of her powers, and after they calmed her down (and cleaned up the lab) Billius swore to her he'd stop using her as a lab rat. Candice was distant with him for the longest time after, but they're okay now! Truely!

Now lets talk about Whisp :]

Whisp is a shadow demon. Their job is to essentially gain power (magic, energy, etc) through fear from other dimensions. They haunt people who are more suseptible to their influences. It's a relatively outdated occupation, but there are a few like Whisp who get some sort of kick out of it.

At one point, Whisp haunted Candice, back when she was a human. She'd whisper (get it??) horrible intrusive thoughts into Candice head. And unfortunately, Candice acted on them. Whisp convinced Candice to commit suicide when she was twenty years old. At that point, Whisp learned she gained far more power by absorbing energy through death, and later found out it didn't just stop at humans. It worked on other demons, too.

Nobody knows Whisp is responsible for Candice's death. Whisp was the very first person Candice came across in this dimension. Candice still trusts her with her full being, not realizing the "familiarity" she feels about Whisp is a huge warning sign.

After Melanie ended up in this hellscape with no way to return home, she's relying on Candice, Billius, Argus, and the unnamed oc to bring her home. And if they gotta go through the 7 layers of hell, so be it

omg what r ur thoughts on cronus.. i never liked him but id like to hear what u have to say

UGH. I ADORE HIM. HE REALLY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS IN MEDIA I JUST REALLY ADORE HIM. Hes one of those characters whos really really good to love to hate. I think hes also a really well written example of what an ableist actually looks like instead of some sort of extreme caricature or whatever, I've known so many people like this in real life its one of the most accurate approaches especially if you view him through the lense of him also being some sort of neurodivergent. I think the fact that he and Mitunas tragic backstories (fought a giant evil thing that was connected to kurloz, got a face scar and a severe personality change due to it, no one believes them or knows how to deal with it) is so fascinating because it really starts to paint a picture on why cronus is so jealous of the attention mituna gets

im not the kind if person to assume that his otherkin woes are real or that hes actually dysphoric or whatever, i don't think many of the issues he claims to have are actually issues at all. i think hes an autistic incel who got far too into "nice guy" rhetoric after having a WWII phase. I do think that hes autistic, though. He fucking sucks ass at socializing. I cant believe he falls for MITUNAS shit, like, for as smart as he boasts himself to be they really are ob mutual footing because the two of them are both naive and overly trusting in the other. I think Cronus recognizes all these issues he sees in himself in Mituna, but due to Mituna being higher needs autistic and physically disabled Mituna isnt able to mask like Cronus does, and then Cronus sees Mituna getting successful quads and positive attention and connections and doesn't understand because he thinks Mitunas being rewarded for something he gets punished for.

Beforus is so fixated on medication and positivity and calmness and friendliness that I think niceness and masking go hand in hand for Cronus, especially as a high blood. And I think that means he also thinks that if he were to "be himself" that'd include "reverting" to his old violent castest ways, which he also KNOWS will get him scolded and shit on in his friend group, so he doesn't understand. Can't win while faking, can't win while being genuine. No one wants the normal ones, they just want the broken ones.

I just think hes really parhetic and is a perfect example of how like autistic people can be some of the most ableist people in the world. I also love his and Mitunas chemistry being ppl who hate eachother but willingly choose to hang around eachother because they're on equal footing with eachother and have similar faults, while also having the same backstory. I also just like sexy ableist men sadly I tend to have bad taste.

for my personality, id say im pretty bubbly and excitable. i’m an isfj & cancer, & i try to look on the bright side and try to listen to/help when they’re sad. im very affectionate with the people im close to, and i tend to cling onto my friends arms and hug them a lot. i love anything soft or cute, especially animals!! im kinda scared of bugs though, but i still always try to take them outside. i get distracted pretty easily, and have a hard time dealing with change. i tend to be a bit bossy and unreasonable when it comes to something i’m interested in. i also really like going for walks, shopping, yoga, baking (even though i’m dreadfully awful at it), and reading. i like complimenting strangers, and i try to see the best in everything & everyone! though i can’t really tolerate it if somebody is overly cruel or rude to the people i care about. i have a very “do no harm, take no shit” mentality :) my ideal date would probably be some kind of picnic or a walk in a park on a nice day, i like very aesthetic things ahsjsbsj

mai has such a gentle soul that she hides behind her prickly personality. she doesn't want to show any types of weakness in case there are those who underestimate her, but with you, it's very different. you have open empathy and kindness, something she wishes she could publicly show, and she has so much admiration for how you carry yourself. whether you're comforting a friend or saving a bug from the corner of your kitchen, she's in utter awe with the natural beauty of your heart. as your relationship progresses, she hopes some of that goodness rubs off on her and gives her the courage to show her true self to her peers; which is something that only you can encourage her to do.

I'm a 22 year old dude with a long history of experimenting with random substances out of curiosity. A few years ago, I purchased a load of estradiol and bicalutamide online (I believe from aphrodite? Something like that), and took 50mg oral bica and 2mg sublingual E for 2 weeks. The idea had always intrigued me - how much of the emotional effects of sex hormones are real and how much is stereotyping? What does it feel like to have the wrong sex hormones in your body?

I was a little taken aback by how quickly the emotional affects started to set in after a week or so I started to feel much more emotionally open, even uncontrollably tearing up at a few things that I normally would never react to. Feelings of anger and anxiety also diminished by like 90%, but I also felt like I had lower energy. There was also a subtle sort of vibe shift in my consciousness in general, I can only describe it as feeling like a kid again. Makes sense I guess, with there being way less test in my body, like how it was as a kid.

Eventually though I had to pull the plug on the experiment, after about 2 weeks. TMI, but my dick went completely dead and my libido was pretty much nonexistent, which kind of scared me. Also my nipples had become noticeably puffy and prominent. It felt good asf to touch them though ngl.

It's been almost 3 years now and I've decided to revisit the experience, and I'm now on day 3 of 50mg bica and 4mg E (maybe the potency declined so I upped the dose). I think the shift in worldview hrt gave me was actually pretty cool tbh, I view it in a similar way to shrooms or some other psychedelic. It's just nice to shake up your brain chemistry every once in a while.

Am I stupid for doing this? I think it might become a once or twice yearly thing where I just chill out and take HRT for a couple weeks. Are there any serious long term effects I should be worried about doing it this way?

I Know What I’m Don’t… I Think!

In one of the meetups id occurred to me that I needed to start working on the project portion of the capstone. My original plan was to finish the research paper first. Then I would know exacly what to do for the project. However, at the slow pace that I’m reading, It doesn’t look like tht will leave me much time, if any to work on the project. So, I decided I needed to get started on my game ASAP.

Deciding on an Idea

The first problem that I encountered was that I didn’t know what game I wanted to make. While getting my Associates degree in computer science I was often angry that I had all these ideas for games based on the things I was learning, but know time to make them. Where were all those ideas now?

One idea that stuck with me was an idea for a game about chemistry. It was a simulator where players could bond atoms together to create substances. For example, drag to Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom to create water. The problem with this idea was that I didn’t sure how to implement it. I also didn’t know how far you could take this idea. I knew of several molecules that you could make using Hydrogen, Oxygen and Carbon, but how complex would the molecules need to be befoe they could form real world objects that the player would care about.

This semester, I’m taking a class on creative writing that includes a large section on poetry. Common advice given to writers is to read a variety of books. Poetry or whatever it is you want to write. So, I thought it would be interesting to expose players to some short poems through a video game. One of the few games that I’ve managed to finish, Monument Valley, contained a short story that was presented in something resembling poetry. I wanted to do something similar. However, when I thought about all the work involved in creating a puzzle game (the assets, the mechanics, etc.), I didn’t’ think I could finish everything on time.

I started to notice a pattern. In all the game ideas that I have, I seem to think that they’re too much work for the time I have. Like many aspiring game developers, I have a lot of unfinished projects. If you look at my itch.io page, I only have two games published, and I’ve been making games (or learning about making games) since 2012! The fear of not finishing the game (and not graduating) was keeping me from making the games that I wanted to make.

Wit that in mind, I decided to start from the beginning. The first tutorial that Unity offers to beginners is the Roll-A-Ball tutorial. The finished product is a game where players psuh a ball around to collect objects. The game ends when the player collects all the object. At the end of the tutorial, you are encouraged to modify the game to make it more interesting. That’s what I decided to do.

I was reminded of the physics classes that I’ve taken and barely passed. This could be an interesting way to introduce physics concepts. I could change the play ara to include slopes, half pipes and other obstacles. The materials for the environment could also be changed to simulate different amounts of friction. Each level could focus on a different concept in motion such as friction, plasticity (how bouncy something is, torque, circular motion, etch.).

The Roll-A-Ball game reminded me of Katamari. It’s a game where you push around a ball to pick up random objects. You are judged on how big you can make the ball within a given time limit. I thought it would  cool if the ball grew as the player collected more objects.

Now that I had my idea, I could start building a prototype.

I started by reproducing the Roll-A-Ball game without the tutorial. I knew that my software engineer brain would kick in and I’d want to do things “right.” And it did.

When the player collects an object, several things should happen.

The object that was picked up should be deactivated (or destroyed).

The player’s score should be updated.

The Text displaying the score should be updated

The player should get larger.

All of these tasks occur in different areas of the game and SHOULD NOT be dependent on each other. But how do you make that happen? I had heard something about Event Systems in Unity and looked up a few tutorials and got it working. I almost understand how it works, so I’m going to attempt to explain it here. I’m hoping that, by putting it into words, I’ll understand it better.

There is a Scriptable object called GameEvent. Scriptable objects are a way for you to create assets that store game data. GameEvents keeps track of a list of GameEventListeners. A GameEventListener is a component that has the gameEvent that it’s listening to and a Unityevent. The UnityEvent allows us to designate functions from other scripts that cann be called when the GameEvent occurs.

I created a game event called “OnUpdateScore.” Both the player and the Text object that idplays the score have an event listener that targets this event. Then, I created public functions to handle the updating of the text and the scaling of the player. The items that they player picks up are responsible for updating the score and invoking the update score event.

I’m not sure about having the pick-up object updating the score. I have the scor stored in it’s own score keeper script. The score is a static property because I want to be sure there is only one score. However, this makes it tricky to manage in scripts because I cannot access a specific component from a static function.

What does that have to do with the problem? Why can’t the Score Keeper hook into the event system too? As I’m explaining my reasoning, it occurred to me that the functions that update the score could be member (component) functions. Then, I could attach a listener and add the function to the event. Something about this seems sloppy, so another thing I could do is to change that entire Score Keeper class to be a singleton, with the score encapsulated. That way, I can ensure that there is only one score and make use of the event system.

At this point, my explanation has gotten fuzzy. I’ve worked through the problem but haven’t explained the basic concepts. It can be challenging for someone who is not familiar with Object Oriented Programming. You can see the code for the project on GitHub here:

Having worked in web development for a while, I’m always thinking about how the code could e architected for maximum efficiency and maintainability. In most of the game development tutorials and twitch streamers that I’ve watched, they don’t seem to care about architecture. They are more concerned with getting things working. It seems like most people treat game development like fine art where it doesn’t matter how things are built, just that it looks and feels the way they want it to. That’s important, but I think it’s easier to do if you think about how you are going to maintain your code.

Wrapping Up

I’m also noticing a larger pattern in the two problems I’ve had this week. The reason that I hadn’t started on the project was because I wanted to be sure I knew what I was doing before I got started. The reason I obsess over architecture is because I like to know what I’m doing doing before I get started. This can be a god thing because it ensures that I’m more likely to accomplish my goals. However, it can also make the process boring because you know what’s going to happen and you can be almost certain you’ll reach your goals. If you are almost certain you’ll reach your goal, where’s the fun in reaching it? I’d like to try and be a little more spontaneous in my work, just maybe not when my ability to graduate depends on it.

+ Gemini moons tend to make friends really easily unless badly afflicted in the 11th house or to venus, these people can charm the pants off of anyone.

+ Aries sun, water moon are really cool people. However lots of them don’t even seem to hold the stereotypical aries traits but when you cross these individuals, Lord have mercy, they scare the LIVING hell out of me istg. Aries is a pretty sensitive sign, put that with a water moon which is intuitive and connected with their emotions, they really can be brash with their actions and act on impulse but they do it with such force it’s impact is long standing, this can be both a good and bad thing.

+ Mercury in cancer are the people to give advice based off their personal experiences, depending on where mercury is placed or the aspects to it, their advice is connected to emotional sentiment. Therefore their advice can be very heartfelt but at times not rational. Cancer,ruled by the moon, doesn’t lead with the head but rather the heart, this can cloud their judgement on situations. These people are great at influencing others as their power of persuasion is real, they can get into people’s hearts and make them feel something.

+ If you don’t relate to your sun sign look to where it’s placed in your chart. You may hold traits of the sign that naturally rules that house. For example an aries sun in the second house may relate to more of the traits taurus has because taurus rules the second house.

+ 4H stelliums are really sweet and care deeply for others. For some reason no matter what sign dominates their chart, a 4th house stellium eases it out.
