This tool is optional. No one is required to use it, but it's here if you want to know which of your AO3 fics were scraped. Locked works were not 100% protected from this scrape. Currently, I don't know of any next steps you should be taking, so this is all informational.

Most people should use this link to check if they were included in the March 2025 AO3 scrape. This will show up to 2,000 scraped works for most usernames.

Or you can use this version, which is slower but does a better job if your username is a common word. This version also lets you look up works by work ID number, which is useful if you're looking for an orphaned or anonymous fic.

If you have more than 2,000 published works, first off, I am jealous of your motivation to write that much. But second, that won't display right on the public version of the tools. You can send me an ask (preferred) or DM (if you need to) to have me do a custom search for you if you have more than 2,000 total works under 1 username. If you send an ask off-anon asking me to search a name, I'll assume you want a private answer.

In case this post breaches containment: this is a tool that only has access to the work IDs, titles, author names, chapter counts, and hit counts of the scraped fics for this most recent scrape by nyuuzyou discovered in April 2025. There is no other work data in this tool. This never had the content of your works loaded to it, only info to help you check if your works were scraped. If you need additional metadata, I can search my offline copy for you if you share a work ID number and tell me what data you're looking for. I will never search the full work text for anyone, but I can check things like word counts and tags.

Please come yell if the tool stops working, and I'll fix as fast as I can. It's slow as hell, but it does load eventually. Give it up to 10 minutes, and if it seems down after that, please alert me via ask! Anons are on if you're shy. The link at the top is faster and handles most users well.

On mobile, enable screen rotation and turn your phone sideways. It's a litttttle easier to use like that. It works better if you can use desktop.

Some FAQs below the cut:

First off! If you're seeing an old version of this post, you may not have seen that we now have our first tool to poison AO3 fics! This is still experimental, and it's likely we'll find issues with it as people start using it! But if you want something like Glaze and Nightshade but for fic, this is what we have right now. Before you decide to use it, please read all the info you can--most importantly, using the poison in its current state makes your fic inaccessible to certain users. All the TTS tools I've tried work with this as long as your readers know to save the fic in a certain way! But people who need to download an offline copy to adjust the colors and can't do that with an AO3 site skin will NOT be able to download your work with the current version of the poison. For downloading EPUBs, it preliminarily looks like Calibre can support "unpoisoning" the fic so it's readable again.

"What do I need to do now?": At this time, the main place where this dataset was shared is disabled. As far as I'm aware, you don't need to do anything, but I'll update if I hear otherwise. If you're worried about getting scraped again, locking your fics to users only is NOT a guarantee, but it's a little extra protection. There are methods that can protect you more, but those will come at a cost of hiding your works from more potential readers as well.

"I know AO3 will be scraped again, and I'm willing to put a silly amount of effort into making my fics unusable for AI!": Excellent, stick around here. I'm currently trying to keep up with anyone working on solutions to poison our AO3 fics, and I will be reblogging information about doing this as I come across it.

"I want my fics to be unusable for AI, but I wanna be lazy about it.": You're so real for that, bestie. It may take awhile, but I'm on the lookout for data poisoning methods that require less effort, and I will boost posts regarding that once I find anything reputable.

"I don't want to know!": This tool is 100% optional. If you don't want to know, simply don't click the link. You are totally welcome to block me if it makes you feel more comfortable.

"Can I see the exact content they scraped?": Nope, not through me. I don't have the time to vet every single person to make sure they are who they say they are, and I don't want to risk giving a scraped copy of your fic to anyone else. If you really want to see this, you can find the info out there still and look it up yourself, but I can't be the one to do it for you.

"Are locked fics safe?": Not safe, but so far, it appears that locked fics were scraped less often than public fics. The only fics I haven't seen scraped as of right now are fics in unrevealed collections, which even logged-in users can't view without permission from the owner.

"My work wasn't a fic. It was an image/video/podfic.": You're safe! All the scrape got was stuff like the tags you used and your title and author name. The work content itself is a blank gap based on the samples I've checked.

"It's slow.": Unfortunately, a 13 million row data dashboard is going to be on the slow side. I think I've done everything I can to speed it up, but it may still take up to 10 minutes to load if you use the second link. It's faster if you can use desktop or the first link, but it should work on your phone too.

"My fic isn't there.": The cut-off date is around February 15th, 2025 for oneshots, but chapters posted up to March 21st, 2025 have been found in the data so far. I had to remove a few works from the dataset because the data was all skrungly and breaking my tool. (The few fics I removed were NOT in English.) Otherwise, from what I can tell so far, the scraper's code just... wasn't very good, so most likely, your fic was missed by random chance.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the cost to host the tool! I appreciate you so so so much. As of this edit, I've received more donations than what I paid to make this tool so you do NOT need to keep sending money. (But I super appreciate everyone who did help fund this! I just wanna make sure we all know it's all paid for now, so if you send any more that's just going to my savings to fix the electrical problems with my house. I don't have any more costs to support for this project right now.)

so idk if i only liked it or if i actually put it in my queue but i saw a post that talked about a few pieces of tech that focus on user repairs and being sustainable (fairphone and frameworks laptop) and after doing some more research into what they have to offer i actually really excited that these products are finely hitting the us market and that people are moving away from the belief that super smooth streamlined glassy = the future. being able to reliably repair and keep what you have alive verse throwing the whole thing away when maybe all you needed to do is add more ram to your current laptop (something that i would do with my laptop to keep using it for a few more years if it wasnt glued shut and i was at risk of cracking the screen) or swap out a fuse.

i know big corporations dont like it but i truly do believe with how much tech we use on a daily basis that the way that we are going to be more environmentally friendly is to move back to tech that we can hang onto for as long as we can and to recycle and then reuse what we cant. like with the frameworks laptop. i saw that they just partnered with coolermaster to create a case specifically so that you can reuse you motherboard, cpu, etc and make a portable workstation. you could dual wield with the laptop you just upgraded if you want to dedicate specific tasks to one or the other. they also specifically mentioned that you could screw it into the back of a monitor and create your own all in one. guys thats cool as shit??? if you had a 3d printer and some time you could even create that yourself

on top of the actual hardware part moving to open source programs when your able. when i update my desktop i plan on running linux. it might have a learning curve compared to windows but in terms of performance??? ive heard that it runs smoother even on older machines, that its more efficient because isnt running stuff in the background that tracks your data and shit. now i understand that not everyone can do that because there are some programs that dont play nice with linux but for my needs at least it does everything i would need it to. and maybe a couple years down the road we do figure out how to run these programs on certain flavors of linux since its open source and people fiddle with it so much. (still looking for alternatives to like word and excel though, i use google docs since its free but i want to move away from them as much as i can too since they laid of their youtube music team (i believe?? it might of been a different branch) for trying to unionize)

if anyone knows of any other smaller companies that actually focus on sustainability and user repairability please let me know. theres certain pieces of tech that i think are now unfortunately behind a software repair paywall, things that used to be just machines and are gaining more bells and whistles like cars and refrigerators if that makes sense. but the more we push for these things to be repairable by us the consumers id hope that would change, or there would at least be options that dont need specific companies to repair them or else they blow up

As I was doing that, I heard the entrance door opening. I assumed that it was probably someone trying to get a tattoo, but I was busy, so I was focused on my client.

I took off my shoes, placing them on the shoe rack as I walked upstairs towards my bedroom. I plopped down on my bed, sighing.

INSTALLING SIMS 3

OPTIMISING YOUR GAME

The sims 3 has yet to be optimised for modern pc's which causes many crashing issues and bugs for players. This step is crucial in order to play the sims 3 smoothly. You can use this application to easily match your graphics card to the game. You can then follow THIS TUTORIAL from minute 21:17. Up until that time, the video explains how to manually match your graphics card which you can still do if you’d prefer, however the application does it all for you instantly . From minute 21:17 it will walk you through how to

match your CPU

limit your frame rate

RESHADE

You may want to use a reshade in sims 3. In order to use reshade in sims 3 you must download a modded version as sims 3 is technically an online game and reshade isn't supposed to be used on online games. Follow THIS TUTORIAL that guides you through the process of downloading the modded version of reshade for sims 3.

If you are wanting to use gshade presets (such as the preset, I use which is my simsvie preset) then the tutorial also walks you through making gshade presets compatible.

CREATING A MODS FOLDER

For some strange reason, the sims 3 does not auto generate a mods folder in most cases, which means you will need to make it yourself. Luckily you can just download the folder HERE (when downloaded you may need to right click and click 'keep' to allow the file to download). Drag the mods folder into Documents > Electronic arts > The Sims 3. There are some random folders inside the package folder so just delete those.

INSTALLING CC AND MODS

It's important to note that any cc/mods you download that end in .package gets put into the package folder. Any file you download that is a sims3.pack (it has the sims 3 logo as the icon) you should change into a package file. Sims3.pack files can cause lag and are just annoying to install, so to convert these into package files you will need THIS APPLICATION.

Create a folder on your desktop where you will put your sims3.packs into and open the application. Select that folder and then underneath select your Documents > Electronic arts > The Sims 3 > Mods > Packages folder and click extract. Your sims3.pack files will get converted to packages and will be ready in your game!

The downloads folder in your sims 3 folder is only for sims3.pack files and they need to be installed through the launcher if you do decide you want to use sims3.pack files.

Any mod you download that is a script file, will need to be in your packages folder as well.

MANAGING YOUR CC AND MODS

Sims 3 dashboard tool

This application will scan your sims 3 packages and will tell you whether they are corrupt, duplicates or a sims 2 or 4 file. Id suggest scanning your folder every time you install new mods/cc

*If your files show up as conflicts you don't have to worry too much especially if they are objects or cas cc. Its only really important if the conflicts are with your script mods.

NRAAS mods (master controller, error trap & overwatch)

These NRAAS mods pretty much catches and cleans any glitches, bugs or stuck sims etc to eliminate the chances of your game lagging or crashing. You can just drag the package files into your Documents > Electronic arts > The Sims 3 > Mods > Packages and nothing else needs to be done, however you can mess around with the settings in game, as demonstrated in the tutorial mentioned.

Sims 3 crash log analyser

This application can be useful to diagnose why your game is crashing, however I personally use it to clear my game cache every time I close my game. Cache files are just useless junk the game generates whenever its opened and they can cause lag, so this application deletes them for you. To do this click file at the top left corner and then click on "Delete all TS3 caches".

Regul save cleaner

This mod is super handy as it cleans up your save file! I don't use it too often, but I usually use it after a few sim weeks or if I have moved town etc. Anything you select under 'cleaning options' BESIDES PHOTOS (prom photos and greeting cards will be deleted) will be regenerated after a little while of playing in game.

IN GAME SETTINGS

These are just my personal suggestions that work well on my computer so modify them to what suits you

all my graphics are on high except for

reflection quality = mirros and water

edge smoothing = off (only because I use reshade as mentioned earlier)

Tree detail = low

High detail lots = 1

Under game options I also have shop mode, lessons, and memories disabled which helps to reduce lag.

Sims 3 is quite old so who is wanting to spend their money on store content? Not me. Head over to HERE to download all the sims 3 store content as package files (yay package files <3) Be sure to read the instructions in the download file. Refer to THIS POST on further instructions

*downloading all store content can cause significant lag so you may choose to only download specific content you like which can also be found through their Tumblr page!

Chapter 2

Summary:

A glimpse into a slow day at Top Gun, complete with minor inconveniences and lonely wallowing, hurray!

This is my first real attempt at a long fic, and trying to come up with a story. This chapter was started over *checks notes* 267 days ago.... I've spent that past (almost) year reading RoosterForMe fics on tumblr and trying wrangle a similar vibe for this. If you want to read *chef's kiss* TG:M fics I cannot recommend her works enough. <3<3<3

Tuesday morning, 10th June.

Laundry, and sweeping. Groceries-MILK and creamer

I was writing my day plans out, my coffee getting colder next to me. Scribbling in the dates of upcoming appointments and services. My pen settled on the square for Saturday, scribbled in hasty pencil marks was ‘Dinner w/ Kazansky, Kans. Barbeque’.

This would be fine, it wasn’t going to suck. Barbeque is good, and therefore things around barbeque are also good.

“That’s a normal thing to think,” I mumbled to myself, taking a sip of coffee. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy being around other people, quite the opposite.

It’s fine, no one would look at an archivist and assume they’re a party animal. Tom seemed to enjoy my company, he somehow made it easier to talk to him. Like he understood when to give me space to talk, not bowling me over to finish what I was saying.

I stowed my journal in my backpack and set out to work. Stopping by my door to plop my basil plant outside.

“Bye, Boski Boo!” I hollered at the small aquarium in the living room before shutting the door.

I drove up to the MA at the base’s gate, holding out my ID, and sliding my bag to the front to let him check it. The ammunition pouches on his kevlar vest sagged inward without clips to hold them open, but the clip in his gun kept the impression that he very much would shoot me if he had to. I drove past him, continuing down a road leading along the edge of base. Despite working here for almost a year I had rarely seen further into the base, my clearance only allowing me a few blocks in. But, I still got to see the buzz of military life in the distance. I had started getting used to the sound of aircraft zipping overhead and buzzing buildings when they came in to land. Although it made calling people while on base a nightmare with jet engines often drowning out both ends of the line.

I hopped out of my car slinging my bag over my shoulder. The brick building stood in the middle of a perfectly kept green, the paved paths clean and swept. As I walked up the path I remembered my first week here, I would cut the corner and step across the grass. Finally I noticed each time I did a sailor would wince or grimace to themselves. One finally told me they’d had it beaten into them to Never EVER walk on the grass. Apparently one of the Officers liked to make sailors who broke that rule crawl on all fours on the grass next to the paved path.

The doors to the archival building stuck as I moved inside, the sea air eating away at the metal. I waved quickly at the receptionist (Katy?) making a b-line for my office. I pushed the power switch on my computer and set about emptying my bag while it booted up. Digging through the mail for any updates on requested materials and orders for copies.

Stacking file-boxes full of newly printed copies, I pushed through my office door towards the archives. Walking down the aisles, carefully returning the cassettes to their boxes along with their CD copies. I’d finished up the day after Tom came by. I'd spent the rest of that day thinking about him sitting quietly, flipping through manila folders. ___

I sat clicking my pen, glancing up at Tom through the open doors. His head was bowed, nose almost touching the papers he was looking at. Leaning on his forearms, his hands cradling his head.

“We have magnifying glasses if you need one,” I softly called out. Tom's head popped up, still hunched over the paper.

“That'd be great, thank you.” He pushed up and rubbed at his eyes. I pulled open a desk drawer, grabbed what I needed and headed over.

“I'm surprised you don't need glasses,” I joked, handing him the magnifying glass.

“Hm. Not yet, but I don't doubt that grandpa reading glasses are in my future.” The mental image of Tom with glasses popped into my head. Oh. That's not bad at all…Maybe he's a horn-rimmed glasses guy, maybe more classic chic,

....

Okay, she's definitely thinking about me in glasses, now. I had no intent on telling her the grandpa glasses were fully in use already. Thankfully I'd only ruined my near sight from shoving my nose in books all day. I'm not sure I could survive Mav knowing I need glasses.

“I'm sure you'll look very distinguished when the day comes.” I felt her hand land on my shoulder before she walked away. Back through the two doorways to sit behind her desk. My face a little warm at the thought of someone finding my glasses attractive

My eyes dropped down to the papers in front of me. A-5 Vigilante variable geometry and their wind tunnel results. My brain goes back to running its two trains of thought. Half of my mind was focusing on the words, the other half combing through ideas to get her to come back over. I cleared my throat, leaning towards the doorway.

“There's one configuration for the A-5 that's an almost wingless design..” ___

The quiet of the archival room pressed against my ears. Layers of paper and cardboard softening the outside world as it slips through the roof and chatters along the metal I-beams.

“Weh, Wil, WILLIAMS! James E.,” my shout of triumph cut through the silence like a knife careening through a window. Pulling down the box I gently laid the cassettes and CDs onto a new cardboard divider and closed the box. My eyes cast around the large, quiet room as I gathered up the box to put it away. The desk by the door, the foldout steel chair looking morose and empty. He’d even pushed it back in. The magnifying glass neatly tucked against the wall. I hadn't had anyone come into records just to read for leisure in a few months. Mostly older sailors coming in on a slow day to peruse photographs and battle plans. I huffed and pushed the box onto the shelf and headed back to my office.

My open notebook caught my attention as I sat back down, Dinner w/ Tom circled in red on the 14th. The day before catching my eye, Friday 13th, making me smile. If I made it through that BBQ would be a nice reward for not getting murdered.

“Lieutenant Kazansky to tower, pre-flight checklist complete, awaiting orders.”

“Acknowledged, await further instructions,” the operator’s voice took on a less professional tone as she continued, “Get comfy, Ice, the engineers are still checking the runway for debris.” A jet had come in after hitting some birds and had left some nasty gifts for the ground crews, no one was injured thankfully. I shoved my head back as much as the crowded cockpit would let me. I'd gladly spend all day in my jet but for God's sake usually I was flying. I felt Slider jostle around behind me as he sat forward in his seat.

“Since we have some time to ourselves, let me tell you about that blonde, Rachel,” Slider said, his mask clunking against my chair.

“Is this the dumb one or the pretty dumb one?” I joked, remembering the two from last week. We'd gone to a bar far enough off base that the girls were excited to see a pilot but not total tag chasers. Slider had spent the night with a blonde on each arm like he was weighing his decision on who to stick with me. He was a hell of a RIO, and a decent wingman. Meaning he'd figure out fast if I wanted a girl that night and happily take home both if I didn't.

“Ha-Ha. Condescending laugh. She was plenty smart, works as a receptionist for some big company. Likes old planes. Anyway, she's got a friend, a stewardesses, coming in to visit next week who just adores the strong silent type. Said she'd love to set you up on a double date with us.”

“She sounds less like a hit it and quit it and more like a date, Slider,” I joked. He huffed and sat back in his seat. I waited for him to say some snappy comeback.

“Slider?...She was a one nighter, right?”

“...”

“Oh-ho-ho, Cupid landed a shot last night? That's great Slide, why the hell'd ya keep it from me?” Slider wasn't some chauvinistic prick who'd rather die than say he gets the warm fuzzies.

“Well, she was, a one night, ya'know. I spent the night-,” “Nice.” “I was going to head back home but she offered to order some food and we started talking. Then in the morning she said there was a nice brunch place on the way back to the bar. Her car is cool too, shitty driver though. It just kinda smacked into me, she's so cool, man. I was like some dopey highschooler, cracking jokes and being terrified I'd annoy her somehow.”

“You? Annoy someone? Impossible, you only chew all your pencils and think out loud, have awful hygiene…” I joked, Slider pushing against my chair, before continuing. “I'd love to meet her, blind double date be damned.”

“Tower to Lieutenants, clear to proceed to the runway.”

This sucked. Okay not suck-sucks, but I was getting tired of this E-3 and his adherence to Not Helping Me. The wobbly stool was not helping me either, threatening to tip over as I grabbed boxes from the top shelf. He had been courteous when he’d told me what he needed from the archives, though his kindness ended there. Letting me climb up and down to retrieve the hefty boxes.

“Why weren’t you given a ladder? Shouldn’t there be a ladder just for this room?” he asked, shifting the boxes next to him with his foot. He reached up and steadied my back as I climbed down.

“No, there isn’t. The building flooded a few years back and it rusted. Now, we have stools.” I dusted down my shirt and took the box from him. “S’That everything? Good.” GET OUT. He pulled a smile and lead the way out. Catching the door with his shoulder and nodding me past.

I dropped the box I was holding in his arms (probably harder than I should given the contents), pulled a smile, and went to my office. “Thank you, Ma'm. I'll be sure to get these back to you, all papers present.” He flashed a grin and adjusted the boxes to keep them stacked.

“Hope this isn’t the only trip you take over here,” the receptionist, (Katy, no Kathy?) said, pushing her chair back to get the main doors.

“Oh, I don’t think my CO will ever stop sending me here, ‘course you could always come see me.”

I pulled my door closed to avoid hearing them flirt. Kathy (I’ve decided that had to be it) liked uniforms more than the person in them, always chasing around the sailors who’d recently been stationed here. I sat back in my chair with a sigh, trying to calm myself. I shouldn’t be upset. That E-3 wasn’t doing anything wrong. I had no real reason to be annoyed with him. A small flush of guilt spread up my neck. I hated being mad, I hated losing control over myself, I hated how people treated me like a child when I got upset. I blew out a breath, leaned forward, and started typing in the logged out materials.

My keys slid into the lock as I shoved my body weight against it. I dropped my bag inside the door, and scooped up my basil plant. The door clicked shut behind me, shutting out the last bit of light. The light of Boski’s tank barely lit up the room as I walked over to him. Boski, my comet goldfish, stared in my general direction from his tank as he swam slowly around. I watched with a small smile as he passed under the sign I hung above his cave, “Lord Byron Boksilous the Spacious”.

“Well, Boski-nova, I had a very boring day, I don’t know how you manage.” I sat down on the floor then let my body fall flat on the carpet. I really did like this job, the hours were fine, pay was decent. My dad had told me stories about how good it was to be contracted by the military in some way. While I wasn’t directly contracted I still had nice benefits.

“Only reason they're so good is no one else is there. It’s one of the largest on base repositories and they hired one person, Boski.” The hand I had raised to make my point clear to Boski flopped down beside me.

“One, angry, lonely person…” Drowning in a little pity pool sounded like a good ending to this day. I layed there watching the reflections of the tank on the walls.

My truck's engine rumbled against my back as I stood across from Cary in some hotel parking lot. I’d driven her back after Slider went home with Rachel again, leaving Cary to get a cab. She’d hesitantly accepted my offer to drive her and I’d spent the whole time salvaging my image. It'd been a rocky start to our double date. I spent a good while getting back into the swing of flirting. Cary’d spent the date flicking her attention from me to the first round college game over my shoulder. Slider was right, the two women did enjoy aviation talk. We'd regaled them with training tales and finished with our great tale of flying with Mav, I embellished his prowess for the night, no use adding to his reputation. Now, she stood a few feet away smoking under a half-alive lamppost, the sickly green light making her dress look a weird ocean blue.

“Are you leaving or do you wanna come up?” She’d been smoking in silence for so long I jumped a little. Her eyes were locked on me, her expression was fixed between boredom and bedroom eyes. Or just tired. She’d told me how little sleep she got when she worked, catching a few hours in a cramped hotel room with three other girls. I weighed my options, the evening was awkward and she wasn’t as nice as Rachel was. She wasn’t bratty, she just didn’t care to work around feelings. Preferring to speak as frankly as she could without being overly rude. She was hot, pretty tall, and seemed to have gotten over my rocky start.

She walked to the hotel door and threw away her cigarette, standing by the side entrance. I opened my truck's cab, turned the engine off and put the key in my jacket. My legs carried me to her side as she opened the door, leading me inside.

k havin some trouble keeping out of The Ennui this past while and i realized i had 7 core values listed on my blog (listed on the little explore thing on my desktop theme as "live life on purpose • step off the path of least resistance • take care of myself • contribute to the community • get things done • always learn • appreciate beauty") sooo score thats a weekly challenge right there.

im just gonna start tomorrow (its the night of the 5th as i post this) since im lucky and my week isnt bounded by things like "weekdays". lets do them in order!

6. Tue - live life on purpose: to keep myself mindful I'm going to write down what I've done after every half hour of my day, plus im gonna plan out a couple things at certain points of the day and attempt to stick to those plans 7. Wed - dont get dragged back into my comfort zone: i do have a dentist appointment that day, but im going to also go to the library while im out, which ive been trying to do for a while but just never felt right. im going to wear a cute but maybe a bit weird outfit, and whenever i have an urge to do something (i should go read, i should cut up and eat an apple), im going to do it instead of succumbing to the Nah. ...also this isnt relevant to the daily challenge but i do need to pick up a prescription so im going to try to remember that 8. Thur - take care of myself: im going to try to do all of my self-care habits ive set up. most of them i do once in a while, but i havent managed to do all of them at once in a few weeks. so that means doing my workout, brushing my teeth, turning my phone off at 1 and reading instead for bedtime, making sure my laundry is put away... etc. this one's only a small part of the day but i guess that means its a good chance to rest lol 9. Fri - help others: its a terrible time of year to do things like volunteering, plus short notice, so im going to focus on chores around the house and donations and home political action, that sort of thing. maybe text my siblings to find out how theyre doing. 10. Sat - get shit done: i mean what else is there to say. at the beginning of my day im going to write down a list of things to get done (attempting to include things that are low on my priority list so just keep repeatedly getting pushed back, like calling my grandpa and working on a video edit) and see how much of it i can do. the slogan for the day is gonna be "if i think to myself 'yknow i could go do this thing' i fucking will" 11. A month with Journelly

I’ve been using Journelly on a daily basis for about a month now, and I wanted to reflect on how my current workflow affects my usage of Emacs in general.

As I mentioned in my post after the first week, I mostly dictate my thoughts to get them into text in Journelly; sometimes Scully speaks to her recorder as she performs her postmortem examinations.

Dictating like this, especially with my accent, is far from perfect; I’d say it roughly captures 70% of what I want to put down. It contains enough errors that I should do some quick review later in the day, especially if I want to develop these thoughts later or share them.

The other thing I do with Journelly is take pictures. Much like the dictation, these are rough and unedited, nothing like the ones I have in my photos section. A picture can quickly capture the mood and the event I’m in with the location in one quick glimpse, which works well with a journal.

Later in the day, usually before bedtime, I refile my Journelly entries into my big journal file. This is also when I transfer over photos from Journalley’s asset folder (which I host on an iCloud-shared folder on my desktop, as I explained previously) to my journal as attachments.

So far, I recaptured the proccess I more or less explained in my previous post. Not much changed. But let’s talk more about the details.

For the notes I take with dictation, I try to do at least minimal editing as soon as I’m done recording. I use Grammarly, which has a built-in keyboard app for iOS, and it’s usually good enough (after a short fight with it and iOS’s built-in spell checker on unique words and nicknames I use that don’t necessrily exist outisde of my own head) to make the entry usable - that is, to the point where I can reflect on it a year later without trying ot figure out what the I was saying.

If the entry contains something that needs a deeper intervention (for example, brainstorming or writing down notes after a meeting), I will try to do that later in the day when I get the chance or in the evening. To be honest, this part requires improvement. I leave too many notes that will confuse me later on.

For photos, I am shifting from using Photoshop to resize photos (from their default 3000 something pixel width down to 700 pixels) to using Ramirez’s awesome dwim tools - the same guy who created Journelly. If you’re reading this and you’re an Emacs power user and you don’t know about these tools, do yourself a favor and look at them right now. This post can wait. You’ll thank me later (and if you don’t believe me, check Irreal’s reviews of those as well)1. With dwim-shell-commands-resize-image-in-pixels, it’s a matter of simply marking (m in dired) the images I want to resize (usually all of them), running the command to resize, and then attaching them withorg-attach-dired-to-subtree to the entry I’m reviewing in the other window.

Two challenges with the above: first, the file names created by Journelly have unique IDs, which tell me nothing about what’s in the picture. Second, as much as I try not to edit photos that will just go in the journal, sometimes I’m itching to crop or correct the color balance. Both of these issues have simple workarounds: I can use image-dired-display-thumbs to quickly see what the image are (the thumbs buffer convinently has a frame around the thumbs I’m viewing, which corresponds to the name of the file in the list of image files in the other buffer) and then I don’t care much about the name; and for the editting - I remind myself that if I like the picture, I should work on it and edit it in its original resolution and not mess with the low quality 700px wide version anyway2.

As for refiling at the end of the day, this is straightforward enough. The only kink here is that my journal is built on a weekly date tree, which appends the most recent changes at the bottom of the file, while Journelly is doing things the opposite way and files the latest entries at the top (as it should). This means that when I capture something in my journal file through Emacs, it will be all the way down in the 2025 header, then all the way at the bottom for the current week number header, then again all the way down to the latest the day, and then once more, it will be at the bottom for the most recent entry. When I refile from Journelly, it works backwards, so I post the most recent entry at the top of that day header instead of the bottom, while the parents headers are still in a reverse order to that. Somehow, this works (at least for now), so I stick with it3.

Entries created by Journelly have the weather and location included in the properties drawer, something that’s missing from the entries I make directly to my journal with org-capture, but I can live with that. My journal template changed to look the same as Journelly’s, something similar to what I saw on Jack’s blog:

When I capture a journal entry like this through Emacs, I change the dash to add the location manually. I could get fancy with the OSM package for Emacs, which I have installed, but “home” or “office” or whatever place I happen to be in at the time is usually good enough (the temptation to create a capture template that integrates OSM into my journal entry “Journelly style” is there).

Lastly, I tried ot use Journelly more as my “brain dump” place for all my notes, including those for meetings, for example. The idea is solid, but the problem is that when I’m actually in a meeting, I have the org file with the meeting already open with the org-clock running, and adding notes to the log this way (C-c C-z) is a second nature at this point. Writing down quick notes this way feels different than writing down my thoughts in journal-style mode. I think it’s just a matter of time before I start directing all my capture notes into the journelly file so I just have one place with everything4.

It was another case where I heard about something, but it never really clicked. I’m becoming more of a fan of the guy and his work, but the tools speak for themselves.

2: another solution I’m leaning into: if I take a picture that I like, I can also lightly edit it on the phone (usually cropping and level adjustment or similar) and then attach it to the entry in Journelly

3: The manual refiling system I’m describing here is cumbersome and slowly starting to annoy me. It’s also prone to mistakes. I will be better off just starting a new journal file in a reverse order, that is, with the latest entries at the top. I believe org-mode has this option built in, and if not, I’m sure there are other tools like org-reverse-datetree out there. So why haven’t I done it yet? I don’t know. It’s a huge file (my biggest org file) and one of the most important ones, so messing with it feels kind of wrong.

4 : On a technical side, this may present a syncing problem. If I use Journelly this way, its file, journelly.org, will be synced between my Mac, my iPhone, and my Linux desktop - possibly also my Android. This can cause issues with syncing. Even iCloud is not perfect, and sometimes the file won’t sync, and I only discover this when I need to use the file, thus presenting changes on top of changes that were not yet synced, which will cause a conflict or loss of data.

Nicest thing I've done? My housemate had a friend who was trying to raise money for their dogo to go to the vet. That struck a chord with me, so I sent them enough for a general visit/assessment so they didn't need to wait any long than necessary.

I've also found the occasional wallet and dropped it off at the listed residence on the ID.

Most regular thing I do is shovel/mow neighbors sidewalk/yard. She's in her 60s and has a wicked cough/health problems. I just do it since I'm out there already. She thanks me with bottles of wine a couple times a year xD

How you can manage and implement moderation into your GCP/Firebase apps

In this day and age, many moderation tools are AI-powered, automated or even outsourced internationally. More especially if you’re a smaller firm or a startup , saving on $$$ and manual labor can really make a difference. 

GCP Natural Language Processing API

Biggest concern I have seen is that this can very easily run through the free initial $300 you are given in credits if you aren't careful.

Through this Natural Language processing API, you can utilize custom JSON files and strings to call for specific entity sentiment analyses and syntactic analyses to break up a phrase. By utilizing methods such as analyzeSentiment or analyzeEntity you can really dive deep into the details and specify certain settings within these methods.

GCP’s Translation API can auto-translate strings of text within conversational settings and chat rooms. This can work seamlessly with your other API’s and can provide feature rich experiences for international users. This is especially important if you plan on moving past the anglosphere and your home country as well, adding a net positive to your app’s reach and value. This is also super neat for video games - ROBLOX actually implemented similar tooling during the Pandemic - so users can have automated translation while they enjoy their games.

Within a moderation perspective, this is great if your keyword catching is strictly in one or two languages and you want to moderate in these primary languages themselves.

These two API's I have listed above are really stellar at processing language and helps you have a great start to your moderation journey. I would highly recommend having a linguist or copywriter on board as well if necessary.

Lastly let's talk about Firebase! Firebase is a suite of back-end services for your app that provides hierarchical setup, scripts, Crashlytics, and A/B testing. This is a cheap and effective option if you do not wish to go the AWS or Azure route. 

With Firebase you can access a desktop / web suite of moderation tools so you can manually moderate usernames and posts users input. I personally utilized this feature extensively when I was at Blue Fever and although it is a very effective tool, we did have to input AI-Based tooling based off of a list of words and sentiment / past posts as well. 

Some words we input for the AI (Not an extensive list obviously….) were obviously cuss words and sexually charged words, and any alternate spellings. 

For example, stupid could be also spelled out stewpid, stup1d, stüüpid, etc there are many more examples, but this is a short and sweet one that we potentially put into our list. A lot of younger folks especially will try their best to circumvent rules, so as a custodian to moderation you need to find the fine line between keeping your user-base stickiness and moderating with high quality standards.

Now…. how does this all factor into Privacy Laws, Child Safety etc.?

Apple’s strict requirements force most app developers to keep users 12 years old and up. under that age you should ban or restrict these underage almost entirely.

 Additionally, with many privacy and data laws such as CCPA, GDPR, COPPA and TRUSTe Guidelines, it is going to be considerably difficult to collect data on children to determine if they are actually children (Meaning, themselves or their parents would likely have to tell you). Also, you can't catch everything on an app or website and that is why so many policies and app platforms have strict requirements regarding age boundaries.

Aside from the features app developers can utilize and import into their developer toolkit, inputting the ability for parents to make Parental Accounts and Parent Settings is very important. This is especially important if you want parents of kids under 12 to keep a close eye on their kids internet activity.

Some companies have recommended that forced ID be put in place to circumvent the issues; however, ROBLOX (one such company who implemented this for voice chats during the Pandemic) noticed that many users were being auto-approved with a fake Spongebob ID. This begs the question, "How quality are ID checkers and how far is too far??"

Some teenagers circumvent laws by doing the Spongebob ID move, some just get their parents ID's because most don't have full on Real ID or Drivers Licenses. So this begs another question to be asked, "how far is too far with enforced app rules/age requirements before shutting down these features?" I would recommend some version of ID checking, just not too hardcore to the point where teens feel the need to do this regularly (and it has to not be sloppily implemented.)

Some places such as China banned gaming for more than 3 hours a week a few years ago, and recently Australia banned social media usage for teens under 16. (Sweden is planning something similar...)

My current CSP Asset spreadsheet now has a front page and some other pages to make browsing easier. The problem, now, is that Google Sheets crashes when I open the file.

For now, it's suggested to browse this outside of the mobile sheets app (at least, for iOS) if you're suffering from crashes. If need be, I'll make individual pages separate from the master one so that they're not so beefy. Which is what I'm assuming the problem is.

It seems to really hate when I try to use the filtering feature, which is kind of the damn point of the sheet. Not on desktop, though.

It could also be that I've been using a custom function throughout the sheet religiously (like, every row uses it.) It only concatenates the ID of the asset with 2 parts of the url to save time linking them. Could that also contribute?

The Best HIDs for the Mac

HID stands for human interface device. This usually refers to keyboards and mice but can refer to anything that lets you provide inputs to a computing device.

I use the term HID rather than simply saying "keyboard and mouse" because the best HIDs for the Mac aren't a keyboard and mouse: The best HIDs for the Mac are a keyboard and trackpad.

The Mac has evolved a lot over the years, and so has its HIDs. There was a time where mice on the Mac only had a single clickable button in contrast to the PC's two: left mouse button and right mouse button.

I don't know if the Mac did this to differentiate itself from the PC or because Apple had done the hard work of researching to all hell mice and determined that an extra mouse button was superfluous. It might have been both.

While the Mac works very well with a variety of HIDs from third-parties, the best HIDs for the Mac are first-party HIDs, which is to say Apple HIDs.

The Best Keyboard for the Mac

While I enjoy a mechanical keyboard as much as the next nerd, the best keyboard for the Mac is one of the Magic Keyboards with Touch ID. There's a model with a Numeric Keypad and one without. Take your pick. I prefer the one with the Numeric Keypad because it has a Numeric Keypad but also because you can get it with black keys.

You can try to live your life without Touch ID, and while you might be able to accomplish much without it, Touch ID on a purchasable keyboard was a big deal for me when it came out. I had been waiting for Apple to create one for years as a Mac mini user, where BYOK (Bring your own keyboard) was the philosophy. This unlocks Apple Pay directly on your Mac without needing an iPhone or other device with biometrics (Face ID or Touch ID). Additionally and obviously: It lets you unlock your Mac or several applications that would normally require a password. Very cool.

The Best Mouse Trackpad for the Mac

We aren't going to talk about the Magic Mouse 2. And the reason why we aren't going to talk about it is because you can't charge it and use it at the same time, which is a ridiculous and indefensible design decision. Shame on you, Apple.

This leaves us with the Magic Trackpad. In 2024, it's technically the Magic Trackpad 2. The original Magic Trackpad was grey and took 2 x AA batteries and worked great. I liked it a lot; but the Magic Trackpad 2, while being rechargeable, also comes in Black, with a wider surface, feels silky smooth, and comes equipped with Force Touch, giving you more versatility in the input commands you can provide. Plus, as a flex: It has no moving parts. You aren't actually clicking it when you press down, it's just providing force feedback to simulate a click. Groovy.

I find it fascinating that an HID normally designed for laptops would make its way to the desktop and would become the best way to interact with your Mac. I supplement the functionality of the Magic Trackpad with the application BetterTouchTool, which lets you program additional gestures than those available in macOS. With the amount of gestures I can make on the Magic Trackpad, I never once feel like I'm less productive than with a mouse. I say this as someone who rocked a Logitech gaming mouse on the Mac for years specifically because I wanted to be able to do more with my HID. While I won't be gaming with the Magic Trackpad anytime soon (I think Minecraft was vaguely playable with it), I much prefer the touch and feel of the Magic Trackpad.
