“Mmmfhhhhzzzzz”
“…”
I brought Halo to help Noon recover. They are so cute! Wish I could be there.
Halo does not actually sleep like this for he is a robot. But he still likes cuddles, and he likes making people happy so he pretends to nap.
This image brings me indescribable joy.

I'm still laughing about the last tabletop session I had in ICRPG where the gang casually went to a public execution, conducted an impromptu prison break, ended up saving what might be a key NPC, and then I made my character look like a looser in front of her.

#RPGaDay2024 August 15th.
This is a good opportunity to talk about loot as experience in fantasy roleplaying games. Part of #RPGaDay2024.
An RPG with great character gear: Index Card RPG. This is a great opportunity to talk about gear as experience in fantasy TTRPGs. I was first introduced to this concept by Index Card RPG where the character’s gear is their experience in the form of improvements to them. The +1 To Hit and Damage sword is the same as gaining a warrior level in some other d20 system games. Casters can grow by…

Thanks for the response. In my case, this was a group of people that were completely new to me. I wanted to see if I could get back into 5e.
I played two sessions and mostly just felt tired after each one. My character was mostly along for the ride and didn't draw much attention. I wasn't doing anything particularly zany or cool. I was just playing the game.
The GM did give me a bit more for my character specifically to work with, but by then I decided 5e wasn't for me.
That game taught me a lot though. Recently I've been trying out playing non-combat sections in my games in a turn order to ensure that everyone gets to share the spotlight. It's been working well.
Don't forget to tell the other players in your group that you like playing with them every now and then!

Why I stepped away from the dungeon

I've been saying it ever since 3.5: Play something that isn't D&D. And it seems a large amount of people are now just figuring that out.
But why? Is it just contrarianism that keeps me from wanting to play the biggest, most popular game? I wish. It's more of a multitude of smaller reasons and personal beefs.
Plus, you know, there's the fact that they sent the Pinkertons after that one person. How about their attempts to modify the OGL? And let's not forget what I perceive to be attempts to push D&D into a purely online space, laden with microtransactions and AI, while shutting out smaller game shops. Maybe I'm wrong about that last one. I hope I am.
I hate listicles, but here's a small one.
1. I don't care much for medieval fantasy
That's a pretty easy one right there. It's not that I hate the genre. I liked the LOTR movies. I played the hell out of Oblivion and Skyrim - unmodded, even. And I even own PDFs for three different versions of Pathfinder (1E, 2E, and SWADE).
But overall, I find the genre kind of done-to-death. I'd much rather explore a world of supers, sci-fi, cyberpunk, alternate history, "Weird West," or something else. While a lot of other people were hard into D&D, I was playing TMNT, Robotech, Shadowrun, RIFTS, and more.
Again, this isn't some sort of hipster contrarianism. If you like D&D, keep liking it. Don't let the words of some internet rando sour you on that thing you enjoy.
2. Homogenization
It was really hard trying to get people to try literally anything new in the years of 3.5. I literally had someone look me in the face and say they wouldn't play anything except D20.
It was a weird time to be in a gaming store. It was as if people weren't aware of other universal systems (many of which, in my opinion, were far less clunky).
For a huge chunk of the general public, WotC owned all of the tabletop space. And that felt grimy to me.
3. Clunky
I've played 5E a few times. I do not care much for the system. Having played Savage Worlds, Cypher System, ICRPG, and even GURPS 4E, I just really can't get around a lot of 5E's mechanics.
Savage Worlds' "wound" system does a lot better than incessantly counting hit points, as does Fate's physical / mental stress counter. Even the notoriously clunky Shadowrun has a better way of tracking damage. Ouch.
Honestly, try out some combat or skill tests in other systems, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
4. Supporting small creators
That's pretty much it. Maybe you can chalk this one up to contrarianism, but I like supporting small game studios, rather than large multinational conglomerates.
Moving forward, this will be a general TTRPG blog. I'll be talking about different games and systems, giving tips, and maybe even uploading some homebrew content for anything but D&D.

I've been making an ICRPG one shot during my time in the bus while going to work and I finally finished it!
It's a 2-3 hour adventure where the players try to steal a painting from the Louvre, Da Vinci's lost painting: The "Mona Arrugada".
I also made character creation incredibly simple so it can be played on the spot whenever I want.
Can't wait to get the chance to play it with friends.
#I don't want to limit myself to only sharing gamedev in this account#I didn't name it tomimi does stuff for nothing#so expect random stuff like this every now and then

Keep on the Borderlands Battle Report Session #3
Link to previous post
Keep on the borderlands continues! We've now played for three sessions of Old School Essentials & Keep on the Borderlands, and I reckon I'll run at least 3 more before considering changing up the rules to a new system. (ICRPG is very appealing right now).
Good session all up, click for the details.
Today we had some new players, a Thief, an Assassin and another Elf. They rolled terrible on their hit points and it was a miracle they didn't die.
They journeyed toward the forests in the north, encountering a mad old man and his pet mountain lion. One of the NPCs was killed, as well as a player character.
I increased the rewards substantially from what was written in the module, but players are leveling up very slowly.
I think I'm beginning to get tired of the incremental XP present in older editions like B/X and AD&D. It's a big hassle to calculate how much XP the players get when it won't actually result in them levelling up. Games like Maze Rats and Deathbringer have solved this by having all XP be in single digits. ICRPG also just allows the GM to simply grant additional abilities at their whim.
These systems look really appealing, so I'm unsure if OSE will continue beyond 6 sessions.
Players weren't really prepared for the fight with the Old Man & his pet mountain lion. One player did attempt a backstab, but it didn't hit. The assassin didn't get a chance to assassinate either. (not sure if that works as a ranged attack).
The second combat encounter, the players fought a werewolf, I was convinced they would all die, but I got them to team up with a werewolf hunter, prep some ammunition, and they seemed to go along with the Werewolf hunter's plan to ambush the werewolf.
They did extremely well in this encounter, but it almost felt too easy, and most of the planning was done by the Werewolf hunter character which I was controlling. At least, that's how I remember it.
Players are still having fun and it seemed to fine for one of the players who had never played before.

People are always like "icrpg isn't really osr" and j think I don't really understand that tbh, like dude doesn't claim osr in the book(s) but he's definitely within the osr blog sphere, and plenty of other osr games are targeted mostly at being easy for 5e crews to jump into(shadowdark &c) and people don't say this about them. Like, you for sure can just play icrpg in a neotrad way, but this is literally also true for into the odd and knave and whitehack, like

Some weeks ago I started experimenting making a TTRPG system to play with my pokemon mystery dungeon OCs. I decided to start sharing what happens when I play here because it counts as OC lore and I have been having a lot of fun.
So here are their current character sheets!

This is Team Helping Paw. They are currently traveling to "Lake Oran" on a mission to get rid of what the locals call "The Pestilence". They are camping right now.

If you have questions about the system let me know! (I'm using ICRPG as a base to make everything else)

#RPGaDay2023, 8/20: Game I'll Still Be Playing in 20 Years.
#RPGaDay2023. What will I still be running in 20 years?
Assuming I’m still alive, because of my family curse and sketchy health, I’ll probably still be trying to stay as current as reasonably possible. Dungeons & Dragons will still be on the menu in some form. So will ICONS. From there probably FATE, Cypher System, and ICRPG as well.If I’m still into horror games at that point, Monster of the Week and Call of Cthulhu are probably still going to be on…
