Of 嵐 and their Indefinite Hiatus

Of Arashi and their indefinite hiatus starting January 1, 2021

ARASHI had their farewell [This is 嵐] concert, December 31, 2020, at 8:30pm JST.

I honestly have conflicting emotions behind this.

On one hand, I am happy that each member will finally get to live their life unshackled by the strict J-idol lifestyle. They have spent the last 21 years or so sharing their lives with their fans—almost “living” for their fans, really, that I believe it is time they get to live for themselves for once.

However, I am more predominantly sad as well, because it honestly feels like it is the end of an era. And, it is!

ARASHI may not always have the spotlight, but they have been a constant force in the J-Pop world. And quite frankly, though there are many other stars that have come and gone, none of them ever shone quite like how ARASHI did.

ARASHI is different.

They have reached a point where fame and fortune no longer mattered to them. They have said in multiple interviews that they are grateful enough to have the love of their fans—and it shows in their interaction with fans in concerts, interviews, variety shows, etc. They are simple like that.

And I practically grew up with ARASHI.

They were with me during my college years and med school years. Their music serves as a companion, a friend, and a guardian, throughout all my struggles, not only in school, but also in my personal life as well.

ARASHI going through an indefinite hiatus feels like losing a friend that has always been with you all along.

And I will miss them.

Of course, I will.

But at the same time, I am happy for them. I truly am.

And I understand that their hiatus, perhaps, is a necessary part of our growth, and theirs as well. And it is very comforting to know that their music will always be there, even if they are no longer active as a group, because that would feel as if they never really left us.

And in a way, they didn’t.

Not really.

ARASHI… will always be ARASHI.

And they will always have a space in my multi-fandom heart.
