Day 1 - Straight A Students

While we meet Open Heart's MC on their first day as a resident at Edenbrook Hospital, she had to work pretty hard to get there, and she didn't do that by slacking off at school.

My original Open Heart MC is Casey MacTavish and in my HC she grew up in a lower-middle class neighborhood in Philadelphia, PA. Her family did not have a lot of money, primarily because of her mother becoming very ill when Casey was a child. Exorbitant medical bills left her family with extreme debt (welcome to America!) and solidified Casey's desire to be a doctor. She wanted to help people facing serious illnesses like her mother's, but she also wanted to help change the system. She didn't understand why becoming ill should destroy a family in a nation as wealthy as the United States. From a very young age she knew she'd have to be an excellent student in order to achieve her dreams.

Later, I created a second MC, Dr. Kaycee MacClennan. Casey and Kaycee have the same background, but slightly different character traits and different LIs in my HC. But all that is included here, would apply to Kaycee as well.

Elementary School: She attended elementary school (Kindergarten through Grade 8) at a public school in Philadelphia. It didn't have the same resources as wealthier schools in the surrounding suburbs, but Casey made do and worked to maintain excellent grades.

High School: By the time High School came around, her family was doing a bit better financially. Her father had become a School Principal and her mother was working part-time as an English teacher/writer. They decided to move to Berwyn, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia, to provide Casey with a better high school.

Casey wasn't thrilled about the move. She was/is a city girl through and through, and preferred a diverse community filled with influences from different cultures to the more bland, monochromatic world she found in the suburbs.

But, she couldn't deny it was an excellent school. Now that she was surrounded with students who could afford extra tutoring, etc., she had to up her game. She was well liked and had friends, but didn't date or socialize much, as she wanted to focus on academics. It worked out well, as she managed to graduate at the top of her class. She knew she would need scholarships to have a choice of top universities.

College: She had a choice of several top-tier universities, but she ended up choosing New York University. She fell in love with the school and the city. She liked that is was far enough away from her home so she could become more independent, but close enough that she could still see her family. Expensive plane travel wasn't in the card for them, so it was nice having home a couple hours away by train.

In college, she studied Biology, but it was there she became more involved in social activism. It was during these years that she came out as bisexual (though she had told her mother in high school), and she became involved in causes that supported women's rights, LGBTQ rights and social justice.

While her scholarship covered most of her tuition, it didn't cover all expenses, so she worked part time throughout her undergraduate career. She assisted with research at the university through their work/study program; but she also worked as an usher at a Broadway theater, as a clerk at the Strand bookstore, and for a brief time, at a car wash with character themed workers. Casey was dressed as Little Orphan Annie as she worked the register.

Medical School: She was accepted at many of her top choice medical schools, but in the end went with the one that gave her the best scholarship. That was Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. It was one of the top ranked in the nation, and she'd be back on her home-turf in Philadelphia, which was very appealing to her. Med school was some of the toughest years in her life, but she was determined to get into her top residency pick, Edenbrook Hospital in Boston, MA. She ended up graduating third in her class and was readily accepted to Edenbrook's program, so all the years of hard work paid off!
