Madonna & Infant Jesus Visit St. Nicholas in Jail (Ukraine icon)

Uliana Krekhovets is an acclaimed icon writer in Ukraine. Her most recent exhibit included this interesting icon: - painted on glass like many she creates.

I love Uliana's aestheric style, but was not familiar with this story. So a search gave this summary of the story:

During the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, St. Nicholas was angry with Arius, who taught that Jesus was created by God and not equal to God the Father.  

St. Nicholas punched Arius in the face, and was stripped of his bishop's robes and thrown into prison.  

That night, young Jesus and Mary appeared to St. Nicholas in his jail cell, freed him from his chains, and dressed him in his bishop's robes again.  

St. Nicholas told them he was imprisoned "for loving you".  

When the jailer came in the morning, he found the chains loose on the floor and Nicholas dressed in his bishop’s robes, quietly reading the Scriptures

Saint Nicholas is a popular subject portrayed on Orthodox icons.

Two days ago I was at one of the three annual Greek Orthodox festivals in my area. I bought a small plastic tripartite icon set with Madonna and Child, Jesus giving a blessing, and St. Nicholas in his bishop's robes.

Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated on December 6 in the Orthodox Church.

Born in 1987 in Lviv, Ukraine. Uliana Krekhovets is an artist, icon painter, designer, art manager, coordinator of art projects of the development department of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), teacher of the Icon Painting School “Radruzh” of the UCU. She graduated from the Lviv National Academy of Arts with a degree in “Design” (2011) and the “Radruzh” Icon Painting School at the Ukrainian Catholic University (2013).

In her works, she uses natural wood, levkas, yolk tempera, organic and mineral pigments, as well as gilding and silvering techniques. By combining these traditional materials with modern ones, she imitates and at the same time interprets the synthesis of ancient and modern Ukrainian iconography. A special place in her work is dedicated to the Ukrainian folk icon on glass, which is for the artist an object of research, a means of continuing the tradition and a field for her own interpretation.
