This is sudden but a mutual of mine has been playing Telltale's TWDG season 3 and they've been posting about how much they dislike Javi... And since I know you're a TWDG enjoyer I was wondering how you feel about him as a character? And the fact that you don't get to play as Clem (except from flashbacks IIRC)

omg thats so interesting LOL. I am actually a diehard lover of Javi, I genuinely think he's one of the best characters in the series. (his name was my url on my old blog wayyyy back when). I actually played season 3 as it was coming out! So I got to see a lot of... volatile opinions about a lot of things in live time.

To start, I'll admit season three's writing is in fact. rather abysmal. It's all over the place and not very concise/clear IMO. And frankly trying to get a fanbase that's entirely focused on Clementine to play a completely new unrelated character... was a big pair of shoes to fill. So IMO Javi was set up to fail by the writers creating what felt like a DLC that had a supporting character of Clementine rather than a season three with her as the main focus.

I think Javi's great! He's funny but he takes his survival very seriously. You get to see him go through some like. awful family stuff and internal conflicts + having to grow so quickly like everyone else did in the apocalpse. He's a family man, he holds his relationships close and frankly, his morals closer. Some of his lines are iconique (I hope you choke on your fucking cake, it looked like shit by the way!) and his VA is just awesome.

It feels like a lot of people didn't like the story which, fair, it was pretty awful, but I personally thought Javi was a highlight and made the game playable. Also his relationship with Clementine as a cool older bro + uncle was sweet IMO, (controversial but I preferred it over her friendship with luke lol) and getting to see him react to seeing someone he hasn't seen since before the apocalypse change for the worse...I thought it was interesting.

Long story short LOL, I love Javi. I think he's probably in my top three playable protagonists and I think a lot of his hate just comes from a shitty storyline.

Coming of Age? IMHO

There is a specific genre when you say coming of age films, but in my case these were the films that I discovered and loved when I was trying to navigate my own sense of taste(?). I badly wanted to be the *chique* wannabe gurl(nothing wrong with that kudos to pulling it off ) with an aesthetic minimalist blog here in in tumblr, but there is no shame in embracing your tween self but embrace them and have better taste! Outside the fantasy world of vampires and boybands go discover sad movies and books. You don't have to pretend to like the full works of Haruki Murakami. I only liked Norwegian wood and the first 100 pages of 1Q48, Kafka on the Shore was so bizzare. I would also like to thank the world of YA, because it is such a great stepping stone to discovering classics and to read books that are going to be classics, and with that comes movies that I loved that are from books and characters that helped shape me and resonated with me. Enjoy my list of movies that I stole their personalities from because frankly I have very little of it.

1. Never let me go

- Keira Knightley, Carrie Mulligan and Andrew Garfield in one movie. Watch it, no in fact watch it and read the book. It is heartbreaking that leaves you hollow, also Kazuo Ishiguro won a Nobel prize and rightfully so.

2. An Education

- My love for Carrie Mulligan started here. An amazing coming of age film, I had phase where I thought if I dated an older man I would be taken seriously, boy was I wrong. The great Emma Thompson is here and Rosamund Pike, need I say more?

3. One day

- Anne Hathaway!!! I remember watching this with my friends and I didn't want to admit I liked it but it was so heartbreakingly beautiful.

4. Serendipity

- THIS, all my New York dreams and fantasies started with this movie, that and Home Alone 2. Such a great film about love and chances. It's a classic to me.

5. Atonement

- I have a thing for period pieces, but also Keira Knightley's *iconique* green dress.

6. Lovely Bones

- I fucking love Saoirse Ronan, fuck she is amazing. I remember watching this so confused about the afterlife that Susie was trying to imagine, the book is even more heartbreaking but I guess we'd like to imagine that in death, we get peace.

7. Norwegian Wood

- Amazing book, the movie? I won't blame them for being sub par, you can't really encapsulate the stillness and inner monologue that you get from Murakami's tone. Still watch it though, its a great coming of age film in turbulent times.

hi hello i’m drinking and i have thoughts on yashahime that i’ll put under the cut if u wanna read and try to follow my train of thought tldr; i like yashahime but i have some problems with motivation, tension, and other plot related things

(also keep in mind that i’ve only been watching the dub bc reading is hard sometimes, so i’m only on like episode 10 or w/e)

OKAY SO i’ve been trying to put my finger on what i don’t like about yashahime, though as a whole i do like the anime. so lemme first itemize what i DO like:

so i do really like the main characters, both personality wise and design wise. i like towa and setsuna’s relationship and i really really love that moroha has precisely one brain cell. 

going off of that, i really don’t mind that the central story doesn’t focus on solely inuyasha and kagome’s kid. i think that would’ve kinda been the conventional way to go, so props to the writers for not doing something predictable (though i really kinda hope that we never find out who towa and setsuna’s mother is; frankly i can’t believe sesshomaru could have sex at all)

also going off of design, i like the design of the demons and the main group of bad guys. it’s all very reminiscent of inuyasha and i think it works

i also think it’s a nice callback to have characters from inuyasha come back in yashahime! they don’t feel entirely shoehorned in (except for maybe kikyo as the tree of ages??? don’t really get that) and they don’t detract from the main story revolving around the gals

not really plot related, but i’m SUPER happy that kaoru wada came back to do the score. his music is very Iconique and really just makes the show, in my opinion (and i love that opening. very catchy)

BUT i’m still having problems getting really invested in the show. for me, what really made me like inuyasha when i first started getting into it when i was like, 12 or so, was how interesting the characters were and how they were motivated by a united threat, i.e., naraku. while i think our main characters are interesting and fun, i’m so not interested in the main villains for a couple reasons:

there’s too many of them, for starters. and yes, naraku had 800 million incarnations of himself, but naraku was the main threat and main villain. his incarnations or whatever other demon of the week were threats to the main gang, but there was still a clear motivation to defeat naraku

on the subject of naraku’s incarnations, i compare them to the four perils in yashahime. the four perils are there to provide a challenge for the gals and impede them on their way to fight kirinmaru. HOWEVER, 2 of the four perils are pretty much immediately killed by the gals in the course of one episode apiece, which to me kinda defeats their purpose. i’ll concede that some of naraku’s incarnations were one-off villains, but they actually posed a threat to the OG gang. the rest of the incarnations lasted pretty much the whole series (i.e., kagura, kanna, the douche kid whatever his name was, etc.)

on THAT note, i feel like the motivation for the four perils and kirinmaru kinda sucks. like they wanna get back at sesshomaru for being a dick by killing his daughters?? compare that to naraku’s motivation for doing what he did: be a terrible bastard man who wants kikyo, hate inuyasha, wants to become a full demon and threaten pretty much all of japan by doing so, enjoys manipulating and tricking ppl into doing his dirty work, etc etc. maybe we’ll find out more about kirinmaru as the series goes along, but idk nothing can really top how disgusting naraku is

aside from what i feel like are weak motivations, i just don’t really feel worried for our gals !! they easily best pretty much any kind of demon that comes their way (as seen in their fights with the four perils) with no real danger or concern. they already seem to be masters of their abilities, which i feel like was more interesting in inuyasha. inuyasha had to improve and get stronger to overcome more powerful foes, and that was exciting to watch!! like how will inuyasha fight ryuukotsuke with his heavy ass sword? how will he figure out the adamant barrage if the red tetsusaiga doesn’t work anymore? will he improve enough to beat naraku? i don’t want to call the gals mary sues by any means, but this kind of improvement to me is just more fun to watch

also with that, in inuyasha, we see inuyasha and the gang lose fights, and they lose bad. call it sadistic or whatever, but when our main characters lose, it adds more weight to the story and it’s a lot more satisfying when they win! like the whole band of seven arc was awesome because we got to see our heroes lose then work to beat them against all odds. and even THEN by the end of that arc, naraku is pretty much at full power and it’s like oh shit !! yeah, the gang beat the band of seven, but naraku is stronger than them now!! how will they win??

in yashahime, i don’t really get that same weight or tension. maybe more of the tension is between towa and setsuna’s relationship, which i think is fine, but with an external threat of some powerful demons and the established world that takahashi made, it’s a little disappointing not seeing our heroes struggle against their enemies. any kind of struggle that they do have against any of the four perils or the demon of the week is pretty much resolved by the end of the episode, unlike in inuyasha, where arcs spanned several episodes

yashahime is probably going to be a much much shorter series than inuyasha is, so maybe they didn’t plan on really fleshing out certain elements in the story that i think could be better. that’s kinda my problem with shorter anime series as a whole; with less time to work with, the details of the plot become rushed. but when you’re following up one of the most iconic anime ever, it’s a disservice to do a shorter series and leave out story elements that would really give yashahime a boost to make it a really quality, fun series

i just answered an ask about rory’s main love interests but now i’m gonna go into lorelai’s

quick disclaimer: i have seen s1-s5, read scripts of key episodes of s6/s7. so. let’s get into it.

jason:

jason is literally trash lmao and i Dislike Him. least favorite of lorelai’s love interests. garbage man. if men have one thing it’s the Audacity.

okay first of all his whole introduction to canon was that he wanted to leave the business his dad groomed him for..... to piss off his dad. like. that’s his reasoning. that’s why he wants to go into business with richard. literally just to piss off his dad. Sir You Are Nearly Forty.

and then. and THEN. like his FIRST scene!!!! with lorelai!!!!! is when lorelai is like “hey you shouldn’t have gone behind my mom’s back and planned this business trip when she was planning a party! that’s kinda shitty of you!” and his response was to REMINISCE about their time at summer camp and he’s like “you still hold a grudge” because. BE. CAUSE. he stood up and tipped over the canoe when lorelai was fully clothed, and when lorelai pointed this out, this man. has the AUDACITY. to say. “i remember. green t-shirt, no bra. trust me, i was the hero of cabin five for the rest of the summer.”

GROSS. GROSS GROSS GROSS GROSS GROSS. FUCK MEN. as if THAT isn’t gross enough he came up with the nickname “umlauts” because her nipples were showing through her shirt!!! diSGUSTIN!! men! are! nasty! and literally less than TEN one-sentence lines later he ASKS HER OUT.  

and then literally the rest of his character is basically just “business.” like. that’s it. when he takes the day off to come to stars hollow literally almost the Entire Time he’s focused on business calls and not on lorelai, his girlfriend who he came to spend time with. and then when richard, being a Shady Bitch, double-crossed him and went back into business with his dad, jason wanted to SUE HIM??? BRO???????? YOU STILL EXPECTED LORELAI TO STICK WITH YOU WHEN YOU ARE SUING HER FATHER?????????

this doesn’t even go INTO all the other stuff about hidden relationship and they’re literally dating just bc it pisses off their parents, it’s just. jason sucks. dude sucks. don’t like him. not one bit.

christopher:

i have..... complicated feelings toward christopher. to steal a quote i saw from twitter when someone was like “he knows lorelai so deeply!” they said “he knows her past, it doesn’t mean he knows her.”

so, like, on one level. i think that christopher was a bad dad to rory. right. like, he isn’t a good dad. i come from a home with split up parents, so, like, i understand the complexities there, but. he wasn’t a good dad. he just wasn’t.

that episode in season one? it’s the first time he comes to stars hollow. the. first. time. in sixteen years he has never gone to see where his daughter (and friend/romantic interest) lived, which follows: he hasn’t been to any of her parent/teacher nights, he’s never gone to any of the performances she was in as a child, he’s never participated with her when it comes to town events that she’s so passionate about (being a pilgrim, all the things taylor lists when she turns down being ice cream queen, etc) he wasn’t there. he wasn’t there for all the small moments that make up being a dad. no helping with homework, no sitting with her and listening after a long day, no actual parenting—no being there when she’s sick, no disciplining her if she does something wrong, no being there to celebrate her victories. he isn’t a good dad to rory. he has his occasional moments (he starts calling her more often post that visit, but it drops off again post-sherry) but all in all? not a good dad. i would go far as to say “deadbeat dad” as the first significant financial help he offers, that we see in canon, is him paying for yale. not helping with chilton, or any other childcare costs.

that’s an important factor when it comes to evaluating him and lorelai. because, quite honestly? i think that if rory didn’t exist, christopher and lorelai would have been firmly in the realm of “we dated in high school.” maybe a former flame that gets a fling when there’s a high school reunion. but since rory exists, they’re tied together forever, and therefore those feelings keep cropping up and flourishing (esp in situations when they shouldn’t) and they’re so stuck in the past.

i think that teenage christopher and teenage lorelai are well suited. i don’t think adult christopher and adult lorelai are well suited. lorelai had to grow up very quickly when she had rory, so she got a job, settled down in stars hollow, and put in the work of being a responsible parent who provides for her child. christopher doesn’t start keeping a job until s2/s3, he’s still very much stuck in the past. his pursuit of her is almost entirely rooted in nostalgia, as is her returning interest. they keep coming back to each other because it’s comfortable, it’s what they know. but once they look past that lens of nostalgia, their compatibility kind of falls apart. christopher is still immature in general (getting angry over the character reference she writes for luke, getting drunk at emily and richard’s vow renewal and basically shoving himself in the middle of their relationship like “but THE OOOOOLD DAAAAYYYS” and that WHOLE storyline of where he turned off his phone and ignored lorelai’s calls when richard had a heart attack, do NOT get me started) and lorelai is very independent and she likes her life where it is and how it is.

so to sum up: christopher and lorelai’s relationship is almost entirely doomed to fail because they can’t remove their rose-colored glasses when it comes to their (mutually romanticized) past together, and when the glasses are knocked off, they aren’t compatible. they just aren’t. what ties them together is that nostalgia, where they’re most natural is when they’re joking and being friendly (like the old times!) and when it turns into a romantic relationship, reality is too much for that tenuous connection to handle.

luke:

OBVIOUSLY i am team luke. this is the ship i’m most dedicated to within the gilmore girls fandom. he’s there for her, they push each other to become better (lorelai keeping his father’s boat, for example, and him encouraging her throughout the opening of the dragonfly) they have that Longing and Yearning. they have amazing chemistry, they’ve been crushing on each other since SEASON! ONE! and honestly they are fantastic when they work together.

i will say that they have their issues, and it almost entirely boils down to lack of communication.

if lorelai had communicated the occasions in which she had seen chris, luke wouldn’t have been so caught off-guard at the vow renewal and cut off their relationship. if luke had communicated about april’s existence with the full honesty that he didn’t know about her existence, lorelai, as a mother, as someone whose child’s default father figure is luke, would probably take some time but ultimately understand the importance of a child. they should have communicated about the wedding being too soon, and all their other issues. that bickering that makes their flirting and crushing so great also gets in their way sometimes; it’s hard for them to have a serious conversation without lorelai deflecting or luke shutting down. honestly i think it would have been great if they’d gone to couples therapy (okay, look, almost everyone in gilmore girls needs therapy, including emily and lorelai, so i’m glad that at least that one got tackled somewhere in canon) and it would have really helped fix that main problem.

frankly, i think a lot of their problems are bc ASP and the other writers wanted “drama.” which fair, it’s a tv show, but frankly leave the drama to rory and there are other ways to manufacture drama other than breaking up your main couple: dragonfly drama, for instance, or liz and tj and jess, or dealing with rory’s dramas, or something like the emily and richard and luke drama but sustained to a point where it causes a similar family fight that might have even paralleled lorelai leaving the gilmore household for someone she loves, and seeing that relationship knit up. like i get this show was in the 2000s but honestly let the couples actually Be Together!!! let them explore those dynamics!!! the whole “break them up, put them back together, break them up, put them back together” thing is tired and it seems unrealistic. like!!!! luke says “i’m all in” to lorelai and less than like TEN episodes later he’s like “it’s too much. this relationship is too much.” LET THEM WORK THROUGH THEIR STRUGGLES AS A COUPLE AND LET THEM C O M M U N I C A T E. LET THEM!!!!!

otherwise? iconique. the Flavor. the taste. the vibes are immaculate. chef’s kiss. luke/lorelai is So Good. their chemistry is unparalleled. their support of each other unmatched. 

i can’t really remember any other love interests lmao OH SHOOT

lol forgettable uh, i think that he and lorelai had an interesting partnership, but it clearly wouldn’t have worked out to the point of a wedding, which i feel like lorelai knew because she kept holding back on actually answering him for the proposal after the s1 finale. i think that his dynamic could have also really been utilized to play with the dynamic of lorelai re-entering her parents’ world and the different expectations that that maintains; i don’t think it should have gone so far to, like, proposal, i think it could have been maintained then max wanted to get serious and lorelai hesitates and pulls something similar to the show. anyway, interesting first love interest for lorelai, also helps ground the world of chilton, so nice little twofold purpose for max there

i will say his proposal was super cute tho the thousand yellow daisies thing was Excellent

Haaaaaaaaaaahahaha this conversation with Ward and Coulson is KILLING ME on a lot of levels. Funny because Ward can’t say “sex” and then justifies everything by saying they haven’t actually done it on the plane. But also funny because EVERYONE is going to be doing EVERYONE on this team in a couple seasons. You can’t stop the sex Phil Coulson. Just accept it.

Is anyone more amazing than Melinda May??

The answer is easily no.

I think Ward realizes that May and Coulson have a real connection here. Good thing he didn’t hear them worrying about their kids too.

This is the second time in a short period that Fitz has had to yell “Jemma!” in an agonized way then watched Simmons potentially die. Poor guy.

It’s very impressive to watch Simmons go from freak out to in control in the blink of an eye. 

Jemma sounds like a robot talking to Coulson there, but Fitz is clearly not fooled. He knows she’s dying inside, and he offers her up the best support he can. One has to wonder if they’ve ever even hugged like this. As far as we’ve seen, up until this point it seems as if there is a line where that they very clearly don’t cross. Poking, playful touching, supportive one-handed shoulder grabs...this we’ve seen. But until Jemma breached that invisible line between them with the cheek kiss in FZZT, it had been an obvious attempt to stay friends4lyfe. So we had the kiss on the cheek when Jemma almost died the first time, and now Jemma was attacked AND Daisy is dying and Fitz offers up his arms (and frankly entire body) as support and comfort for both of them.

But he still kind of leans away some during the hug because obviously there’s still a line there he doesn’t want to cross.

This appears to be genuine rage from Ward as well. We know Daisy getting shot wasn’t in the grand plan or whatever. And he says he’s not blaming himself which I just now realized probably means he’s blaming Garrett. Interesting.

This is a great episode. It gets 10/10 for Bus Family Feeeeeeeeeeels, 10/10 for Amazing Undercover Work, 10/10 for DRAMA!

Strangely no, I didn’t get this one! (I’ve gotten... so many... it’s going to take a while for some lol)

Top 5 favourite characters: Maia, Isabelle, Raphael, Alec, and Magnus.

Other characters you like: Marise, Camille, Jace, Jordan, Luke, Valentine, Jonathan/Sebastian, Meliorn, the Seelie Queen, Lorenzo... so many.

Least favourite characters: Jocelyn was dull. And I didn’t really care for Clary, though after s1 I didn’t mind her much either.

Otps: Isabelle/Raphael, Isabelle/Meliorn/Raphael. And I really, really dug how this show did “utterly messed up disfunctional exes”, it hit all my spots (Camille/Magnus, Jordan/Maia, Marise/Valentine). I also liked Isabelle/Sebastian, Isabelle/Maia, Isabelle/Aline, Isabelle/Aldertree, Isabelle/Simon(/Raphael) sometimes... Outside Isabelle (lol), I appreciated Alec/Aldertree (THE CHEMISTRY), Maia/Magnus and recently I experience a burst of Jace/Magnus feels that isn’t going away LOL. I’m even entertaining the idea of writing something and I’ve spent months without touching my SH wips smh. And frankly, I was there for tons of rareships and polyships. This fandom needed them, it was too ship-centric.

Notps: Alec/Magnus (the ship was not my thing but I could’ve ignored. The fandom, however? Yeah, no), and Clary/Isabelle. It’s basically a damped down version of Bonnie/Elena and that’s my most hated type of dynamic ever xD

Favourite friendships: Raphael & Magnus, Alec & Maia (I could dream), Jace & Isabelle.

Favourite family: the Lightwoods, in all their fucked up glory.

Favourite episodes: 2x08 (aka THE RIZZY EPISODE). Really, 2x08-2x14. I really enjoyed myself there.

Favourite season/book/movie: season 2a, be still my heart.

Favourite quotes: NOTHING beats “If there’s any good that comes out of being at the brink of war, it’s being able to stand here in front of you.” Raphael, you smooth fucker.

Best musical moment: I really liked Simon’s song in 2x13.

Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: every Raphabelle scene but especially the first one in 2x08 (I actually crack shipped them a little in s1 before they properly met, so imagine how I felt LOL. That actually happened to me with KC in s2/early s3 of TVD too xDD).

When it really disappointed you: s3(a; I still haven’t watched s3b) was zzzzzz.

Saddest moment: I HAD TO WITNESS THREE (3) RAPHABELLE BREAKUPS LMAO. Nah, I actually dig breakups xD. Err... honestly? Hearing Alec turn down a promotion in 3x01. At that point I knew he was lost to me *sniffs*.

Most well done character death: I thought Jace’s temporary death was well-done (though I wish they’d done more with the after-effects. I love resurrection stories soooo much).

Favourite guest star: Asmodeus. He’s iconique.

Favourite cast member: ALAN VAN SPRANG. I loved him since his Reign days, it was inevitable.

Character you wish was still alive: was here ever any clarification over what happened to Dot or...?

When did you start watching/reading?: I watched s1 at the behest of my sister (she’s a books “fan”. By which I mean she reads them, tells me what happens, and endlessly complains about them xD). I was immensely frustrated by it but agreed to continue with s2.

Best animal/creature: I’d want to be a Warlock. You’re immortal, you have powers, AND you can walk in the sun and lie. The origin is the only thing that would put me off :/

Favourite location: Seelie court.

Trope you wish they would stop using: “Magnus suffers horribly because of his relationship with Alec, the sequel” xD

One thing this show/book/film does better than others: I thought it did a really, really good job of portraying parental abuse with Jace and Sebastian.

Funniest moments: Alec maneuvring people as Head of the Institute was always a joy to watch for me.

Couple you would like to see: I really, really can’t get Jace/Magnus out of my head lol. But in truth, Isabelle/Meliorn/Raphael would’ve been AMAZING.

Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: I WANTED TO SEE CAMILLE AGAIN. And I was interested (and fearful, but mostly interested) in the show adapting the Camille & Maureen & Raphael & Simon storyline from the books (I actually wanted to use it for a WIP... I should try to finish those, yup.

Best promo: n/a. I always forget this stuff LOL.
