When June Foray passed away on July 26th 2017, just shy of her 100th birthday, I was asked to do the artwork for the WB tribute ad for her. Here is one of the prelims for that print art. Having had the pleasure of working with June as she voiced her iconic Granny character, it was an honor to draw this for her.

to me vocalsynth characters are like voiceactors

theyre living in their own sort of industry where they can get called on for like singing songs and sometimes acting in music videos if theyre iconic/popular enough like cryptonloids and yeah sometimes you’re in the recording booth and youre recording with a fairy (lapis) or the endless amounts of cyborgs that vocalsynth has. And sometimes ur literally just a normal guy (kiyoteru) who’s taking time off of his job as a teacher/rock star to get in the studio. Cest la vie.

Scream ( 1996)

Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far. Solving this mystery is going to be murder.

A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.

~ Scream (1996) facts ~

The original title of the film was Scary Movie, but it was changed to Scream by the Weinstein brothers—then the heads of the film’s production company, Miramax—in the middle of production. They allegedly decided on the change because Harvey Weinstein was listening to the Michael Jackson song “Scream” in his car with his brother Bob. They both liked the title for a horror movie.

The Weinstein brothers initially approached noted horror directors George A. Romero and Sam Raimi for directorial duties, but they both turned the project down. Wes Craven, who had directed the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, initially passed as well, but he signed on to direct after Drew Barrymore agreed to appear in the film in the lead role of Sidney Prescott.

Barrymore changed her mind about playing the lead five weeks before production was set to begin. Barrymore instead suggested she play Casey Becker, the teen terrorized by the killer in the opening scene, to cleverly subvert audience expectations that a star of her stature would survive the movie. Casting directors approached Alicia Witt, Brittany Murphy, and Reese Witherspoon to take over the Sidney Prescott role before eventually casting Neve Campbell.

Barrymore worked for less than a week . Barrymore shot all of her scenes in the first five days of production

The killer’s now-iconic mask was a simple off-the-shelf Halloween mask. Craven and a producer found it at a house they were location scouting.

Besides Scream, Roger L. Jackson’s credits include the role of Mojo Jojo from The Powerpuff Girls. Craven separated Jackson from the actors and had him actually talk to them over the phone to make their reactions feel more genuine.

The film was originally given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA for being too gruesome, and despite the fact that Craven initially refused to cut anything, the movie was edited and resubmitted by the studio nine times before it was given an R rating.

The 42-minute final act, taking place entirely during the party at Stu’s house, took 21 successive nights to shoot. The cast and crew jokingly called it “The longest night in horror history.”

Eventually, the high school scenes were shot at a community center in nearby Sonoma because it didn’t fall under the jurisdiction of a school board. As a joke, in the “Special Thanks” section of the end credits it says “No thanks whatsoever to the Santa Rosa city school district governing board.”

Linda Blair, the star of The Exorcist, makes a cameo as one of the news reporters outside of the school. She’s the one with the bright orange blouse. Later on, she’s the reporter who confronts Sidney in Dewey’s police car. Craven previously directed Blair in the 1978 TV movie Stranger in Our House.

You're right! It's impossible to beat the original! Though a part of me would love a dub that's just the cast speaking English, ala They Cut Wrong My Hair

I know plenty of dubs that have done a good job, or a better job, sort of how Weird Al’s movie UHF is funnier in the Latino dub (in my opinion), but I think it’s for the best in this case to not stray that much from the original voices, because of them being so iconic, and not to mention, them hinting at their personalities perfectly, more to this later. 

Sure, maybe to someone that gets to know the characters for the first time hearing the puppets talk in a different voice other people know them with won’t be that weird, but I think the voices are the way they are because of cultural context too, like how they’re based on a lot of chilean celebrities and how the setting at it’s core is the kind of news channel one would see in Chile in the 80s. The US equivalent of the 80s are...ehem, different to say the least, so there’s that trouble of how to approach/translate that too. 

The delivery of the jokes, of the slang words is also so so so important. It’s what makes people laugh again and again even when they’ve heard the joke before. Jokes can land or not land depending on the way you say them, especially the type 31 minutos has. 

At the baseline, you have to have voices that communicate the type of personalities these people have, and oftentimes, when people pick voices this is already enough - without regarding much whether they are like the original or not. The baseline meaning: The juxtaposition of a rabbit that is considered usually for a cute type of character having a deep voice, Policarpo talking with “normal” vocabulary but the pitch of his voice hinting at his inner eccentricity, Juanín sounding like he’s out of breath from working so hard + being so tired and like he’d sigh any second etc. etc.  

I don’t know. I would consider people with unusual voices to be in the forefront in terms of choices. Anybody that knows about my music taste will know that I’m so picky with voices as to drop the best song in the whole world if the singer doesn’t sound interesting to me. And also I was upset because of them having different voiceactors for the Don Quijote play, when actually they weren’t that bad imitators. So maybe I’m not fit for the discussion, feel free to discuss this with other people in the discord, or in the reblogs of this, or with me regardless of me probably going off into another rant about voices jsdkfjsd

After hearing the sad news of the passing of Unsho Ishizuka (Bunta Fujiwara), I had to go and watch some Initial D to lessen the pain.
