This right here is why I fucking adore Sansa Stark. This is her very first chapter of the entire series, and even though she is still a very naive young girl at this point there are already glimmers of the woman she might become. Immediately prior to this excerpt she was frightened half out of her wits by her first look at Ilyn Payne, and then utterly humiliated by her own reaction. And even afraid and surrounded by royalty and knights and Prince Joffrey (with whom, at this point, she thinks herself in love), Sansa still manages to give a lighthearted, diplomatic response.

This is her FIRST CHAPTER. She has not yet been exposed to the scheming of King’s Landing, has not yet had her illusions shattered and her family torn from her. But already her immediate instinct is to armor herself in courtesy and diplomacy. Though this example is a small thing, in the grand scheme of the universe, it serves as a useful insight into just how good her instincts are. Though she’d been speechless with fear for the last few paragraphs, the first words she speaks are exactly the right ones.

Sansa has so much potential to become a fearsome player of the Game, and it really frustrates me when people don’t see it.
