This is a woolly rhinoceros, the second most popular animal from the "big five" ice age after the mammoth.
Tumblr media
Thanks to the large number of skeletons and whole mummies found by paleontologists in the permafrost, as well as cave paintings, we can reconstruct its appearance with high accuracy.
Tumblr media
This giant was up to 2 m tall, and the weight could reach 3 tons.

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...
Two close-ups from my 2011 acrylic painting "Lion Cave." It features a family of cave lions (Panthera spelaea) and passing woolly mammoths (Mammothus primigenius).

Teratornis is often portrayed as a vulture like animal but based on it's proportions and other features it was probably more like a caracara, a ground hunting predator. This one has a taste for ringtails.

💭💡✏ 🌐https://smart.bio/martintalone #drawing #illustration #artefcnym #pleistocene #iceage #brazil #minasgerais #paleontology #paleoart #fossil #fossilfriday #prehistoric #animals #nature #wildlife #bushdog #water #wetland #marsh #swamp #colorpencils #watercolor #stork #capybara #carpincho (en Minas Gerais) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSSieovMNo5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Here it is! Kelenken guillermoi. This apex predator ruled Argentina ca 17 million years ago. One of the largest of the known terror birds, it had the largest skull of any known bird ever! The holotype specimin sported a skull meassuring 70 centimeters, and it might not have been fully grown yet. This callback to the non-avian dinosaurs likely used it's long and well-developed legs to ambush and run down the unique megafauna of South America, dispatching them with vicious kicks, pecks reminiscent of being picked by a pickaxe, or by grabbing them and violently throwing them to the ground, like it's closestliving relatives; the seriema. . Finally! I've been working on this for a LONG time! It feels really good to have the sculpture finished. I learned a lot making this one, and you can see a clear progression from the first model i posted, and this one. This is sort of a re-take on that first model, tho the actual remake of the first one is still early on in the making, being a scantly clad armature for now. Credit to the tagged creator of the skeletal i based it on, check them out, they've got some good sketches! Under a veil of moonlight, a giant pushes its way through the edge of an ancient forest, massive legs plow slowly through deep snow, crashing through the stillness of the night making sure not to tangle the even more massive antlers that adorn its head. At more than 12 feet from end to end, the spectacular headgear of Megaloceros giganteus likely prevented it from venturing to far into the dense woods, but the Ancient winters of Ice Age Europe were long and bitter and might have driven the great beast into unexpected places in order to find food that could help sustain its more than 1,500 pounds of girth.
Megaloceros was one of the largest deer species to have ever lived, reaching almost 7 feet at the shoulder. Despite its common name of the "Irish Elk," M. giganteus was actually not closely related to modern elk species, with its closest living relatives being the Fallow Deer or the Red Deer.
Though the first scientific descriptions of the creature were done in the late 17th century by Irish physician, Thomas Molyneux (1695), humans have in fact known of and lived along side the great deer for millennia across a wide range, including Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. Those ancient humans not only likely hunted the animal but also used their antlers and other bodily remains in various different ways including the construction of tools, and they even depicted what they looked like in life in the form of art found in places like that found on cave walls in Cougnac, France.
It's possible that humans may have had a part to play in the ultimate extinction of Megaloceros, though it's also likely that there were other factors, some theories suggest climate change leading to denser forest growth, making their enormous headgear a burden when looking for food, others suggest that the large antlers may have needed more nutrients than the food supply could support, and still other theories suggest that sexual selection of males with only the largest antlers may have caused breeding to be very a very exclusive activity which may have caused issues in overall population growth and health.
Regardless of what finally did it, these massive animals eventually perished, gone but not forgotten, like so many other ice age giants.

The First Dog Burial by Ancient Humans I recently commissioned Ettore Mazza to create an ancient dog funeral. To my knowledge, there is no art representing this right now. I'd like to point out a few things about this art. These Moravian Upper Paleolithic people are fully clothed for the ice age - not shirtless. There’s men, there’s women, and there’s children. There's a shaman adorning the dog with symbolic ochre. The people even have tattoos and jewelry. Most importantly, you can see in this scene that there is legitimate emotion. Look closely at the sadness of the individuals laying the dog to rest. Look at the woman with the infant consoling the child who’s holding her leg. While another individual can’t bear to look at the scene. Now take note of the other clan members in the background, observing respectably from afar, as this family lays their loved one to rest. This is how people used to live. They weren't less than human. They were us. Ettore nailed it. @ettore.mazza @ethnocynology #paleoart #prehistory #caveart #archaeology #anthropology #humanity #humans #evolution #cave #caveart #nature #scicomm #iceage #science #primitivetechnology#bushcraft #outdoors #burial #prehistory #prehistoric #wolvesofinstagram #czechrepublic #wolfstagram #dogart #painting #dogpainting #wolf #wolves #dogs #art (at Czech Republic) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4Dv6jOAgk7/?igshid=1ect6u2ro46oa
