IC 443 is commonly called “The Jellyfish Nebula” due to its appearance. It is a “Supernova Remnant”, that is, the remains of a star that violently exploded 5,000 to 30,000 years ago. The spherical shape suggests that the explosion is still in progress, originating from the centre.
It resides about 5,000 light-years distance and is approximately 70 light-years in diameter. It is far too faint to be visible unaided, but, if it were, it would appear larger than the full moon.
The spherical blast wave from the explosion is thrusting (above) into the residing cloud of dust and gas in this galactic region. Below it, the blast wave is being absorbed by another smaller galactic cloud.
The Jellyfish Nebula is a favorite target for both amateurs and professionals. However, its history is still perplexing, debated.
I photographed the Jellyfish Nebula from my garden in Strasbourg France in mid-February 2024. 45 x 300 sec.

Jellyfish & Monkey Head Nebulae - During my last full session of image taking last year, I pointed my telescope at a familiar target as well as a new one... at the same time. Being able to get a wider field of view by using the Radian Raptor 61 opened up a lot of really neat imaging opportunities. Having captured the Jellyfish Nebula before. I wanted to get it in a wider fov and by doing so, I was able to include the Monkey Head Nebula in the frame. I had never captured this object before. One neat fact is that the Jellyfish Nebula is located in the Gemini constellation while the Monkey Head Nebula is located in Orion . 40 x 360s Dark, flat, bias and dark flat frames 800 ISO - Bortle 8 .

#ceres #nebula #cosmic #space #stella #hubble #space_telescope #comet #nasa #jaxa #sun #moon #mars #jupiter #earth #saturn #uranus #flare #corona #andoromeda #wise #messenger #astronaut #star #stars #alphacentauri #luna #cassini #system #galaxy https://www.instagram.com/p/Bweh5CIH14m/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=oeyo2ytjlf60

The Jellyfish Nebula - IC 443 The Jellyfish Nebula is a giant, and faint, supernova remnant in the Constellation Gemini . Back in the beginning of March I did a poll between two different processes. My simulated SHO ended up winning, but the is was my wife's, @ruthanne_holloway , favorite. This was a really neat target that I wish I would have respected more and gotten more time on. The problem was that there so many other great targets up at the same time! We always talk about the Summer / Fall Milky Way season, but the Winter Nebula season may actually be my favorite time to capture . For this post, I let IG do its crop thing and include the starless version . 50x240s & 5x300s (got lazy) 20 darks, 50 flats, 50 dark flats & 50 dark flats 800 ISO - Bortle 8 . IC443. The Jellyfish Nebula is a supernova remnant. 30 X 6 mins in Ha and 12 x 6 mins of RGB each, taken last week. I will be posting the new Elephant Family video on Thursday after a couple of months or more. You can see it on my YouTube channel or on my website at https://www.davidcrane.co.uk Regards and stay safe. David https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ27pVFn-tB/?igshid=1mjlrajbh9pk5

Jellyfish Nebula - IC 443 The Jellyfish Nebula is a giant, and faint, supernova remnant in the Constellation Gemini. . Had a poll yesterday, and the winner is... the simulated HSO version! I took this data back at the beginning of February and I just realized I never posted it here, so I went back and tried some different processing. All three processes are available on my latest (March 7, 2021) on my blog - link on my profile. Included there also are starless versions, which would have been included here but Instagram did not like my image size :) Depending on the amount of data I can get over the next couple of weeks (small trip), I may end up posting one or both of the other processes here as well For this process, I took my image data, stacked it in Astro Pixel Processor three times, each time to extract a certain channel - Ha, Oiii and a simulated Sii (Ha - Oiii mono) and then recombine them as a color image using the Hubble palette, which places the Ha as green (normally red), Oiii as blue and Sii as red (also normally red...). APP allows you to change the algorithms of each individual channel to achieve the final color result you want. There are many different ways to do it and the way I did it here is the way I prefer. . 50x240s & 5x300s (got lazy) 20 darks, 50 flats, 50 dark flats & 50 dark flats 800 ISO - Bortle 8 .
