Hey if you, like me, totally fell in love with Liz Morey's voice performance as Ianthe in Cassette Beasts, you should check out Badlands Cola! It's a horror podcast about a small town in Canada with its fair share of secrets, and Liz plays the central character, Sunny. Like Ianthe, Sunny is a private investigator haunted by their past trauma. But yanno, younger and dumber, and a themby just like their voice actor. Also dinosaurs are there. It really is such an engaging story with good characters. Check it out!

Happy Lesbian Visibility Day and Happy Birthday to Cassette Beasts!
Cassette Beasts has become my all-time favourite video game ever since I started playing it. As a lesbian, I am also absolutely delighted by the fact that the initial release date of Cassette Beasts coincided with Lesbian Visibility Day on April 26th.
For bonus points, Cassette Beasts features not only LGBTQ+ representation in both the main and supporting cast, but also an actual canon old married lesbian couple in the supporting characters Ianthe and Wilma.
To celebrate both Lesbian Visibility Day and the 1-year anniversary of the release of Cassette Beasts, I made these lesbian pride icons featuring the Cassette Beasts logo as well as Ianthe and Wilma both individually and together.
Feel free to use these icons! If you use these icons, credit is appreciated but not necessary.

OMG ANOTHER CASSETTE BEAST FAN!!! :D
Can you tell us more about Azi? What monster tape does he use?
Omg HI!!🩷
Sorry it took me so long to answer, I wanted to add a drawing but I didn't have time so I decided to answer like that ;-;
Tumblr media
Anyway, this was my team for the finale!
Obviously with Felix🩵
I'll draw something more with Azi for sure but some things I can say about him is that he's been on the island for 3 years.
It took him a while to get used to this new life, it was really hard for him at the beginning. For almost a year he basically stayed in his house, all day long, with just Kayleigh, Ianthe and Wilma visiting him every evening.
Once he started coming out of his house more, he met Felix and fell in love straight away. Felix helped him a lot, yep.
Wilma basically adopted him.

So close to the end of Cassette beasts... I could technically go visit the final boss, but I want to first try to succeed at defeating Lady Columbo first (Ianthe has the same coat, claims to be a high stakes detective, and one of her eyes is very wonky, she has to be Columbo based)

So I've been playing (and enjoying) Cassette Beasts a lot. I'm currently at the final part of the Take Me On quest, and I've heard that the final challenge is no joke.
I know Ianthe and Wilma have Gearyu, Djinn Entonic, Robindam and Decibelle. Which means I cannot go just go in all willy-nilly and hope for the best, hence why I'm rebuilding much of my team.
My current team is Baphomet (Ramtasm), Roadside (Lobstacle), Oracle (Triphinx), Nightwing (Mothmanic) and Mixtape (Spitzfyre). The game plan I thought of was leading off with Oracle and Roadside to tank incoming hits, focus on Wilma until she's down to Decibelle, then switch to Nightwing and fuse them with Oracle so I can dole out massive Lightning and Metal-type damage (with a side order of Air). However, I am open to other suggestions anyone else might have.
Granted, I might end up going for my own original strategy, but it would be interesting to see what others might have cooking up.

Jessie and James becoming Captains in Cassette Beasts
Jessie and James enter the Ranger Outpost in Harbourtown. "We did it," Jessie announces, brandishing their Ranger cards, practically thrusting them into Ianthe's hand. "All Ranger Captains have been defeated."
Ianthe raises an eyebrow, sceptical, but her eyes scan the cards regardless. She glances at Jessie and James, both pleased with themselves as evidenced by the satisfied smirks on their faces.
She hands the cards back. "I can't accept these."
James' mouth opens and closes, and then opens and closes. "Why not?" he eventually asks. "We beat all the Captains between us."
"Exactly," Ianthe replies dryly. "You beat all twelve between you. But you didn't beat all twelve individually."
Jessie took a deep and calming breath before thrusting the cards back. "Listen here," she said. "We are not applying to be Captain Jessie and Captain James. We will be Captains Jessie and James, we are a team, and we will be Captains together or we will not be Captains at all."
Ianthe's smirk mocked them in response, as though beckoning them to retreat. When it became evident neither side would back down, her smirk turned to a genuine grin. "Very well," she replied. " I hereby declare you Captains Jessie and James."

Crown Him With Many Crowns
You girlies liked the cassette tape that had "Crown Him With Many Crowns" on it, so I thought I'd make a post about the song.
I don't think there's much depth/authorial intention with this reference–Tamsyn Muir was probably just looking for a song title to match Coronabeth and went with this one. The title also sounds kind of silly and redundant.
I'll admit, when I saw this name in Nona the Ninth, I was like "That's probably a hymn or Bible reference," but didn't know the song. Turns out, as is the case with a lot of hymns, I know the melody but with different words. This hymn appears in a bunch of hymnals, including Catholic ones, so it's possible Muir knows this song simply from being Catholic.
youtube
A fun fact about this hymn is that, according to Wikipedia, it has twelve verses. TWELVE. VERSES. That is a CHONKER. Wiki also says that typically, the song is split into two six-verse versions. Fascinating how you split the song and get two different songs with the same melody but different themes. It's almost like if you take an embryo and split it and get twins.
The other funny thing about Corona being named for a chonky hymn is that she's described as well-formed compared to how scrawny Ianthe is.
So, do the words give us anything interesting with respect to The Locked Tomb? Let's see under the cut. This isn't gonna be a detailed analysis at all. More like pointing out some parts that get some weird/cool meanings when applied to this series.
Crown him with many crowns, The Lamb upon his throne; Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns All music but its own: Awake, my soul, and sing Of him who died for thee, And hail him as thy matchless king Through all eternity.
We have Corona and Harrow in the same verse. Amazing.
I might be misremembering, but isn't there a sound that Resurrection Beasts make? If so, there's our "heavenly anthem." And of course this idea of a king being hailed through all eternity–Jod.
The next interesting part we get is verse 5.
Crown him the Lord of years! The Potentate of time,-- Creator of the rolling spheres, Ineffably sublime! Glassed in a sea of light, Where everlasting waves Reflect his throne,--the Infinite! Who lives,--and loves--and saves.
Jod is an immortal (essentially) necromancer, the literal recreator of planets. And everlasting waves? The River.
The last one to point out is verse 10.
Crown him the Lord of life Who triumphed o'er the grave, And rose victorious in the strife For those he came to save; His glories now we sing Who died, and rose on high. Who died, eternal life to bring And lives that death may die.
Since this verse is referencing Jesus' death and resurrection, it highlights that exciting tension we feel as readers knowing this version of the story, but then seeing this same theology twisted around in The Locked Tomb. This does strike me, though, as pretty close to the narrative that most citizens of the Nine Houses probably have about Jod. He harnessed the energy of death to create life.
That's all I've got on this one. Sometimes, being a church nerd pays off. 😌

When I first started playing cassette beasts, Mario and its various movies were fresh on the dome, so when I found out that all the characters hail from some place in the multiverse, I immediately started thinking about the world where dinosaurs evolved into people. I wanted to do that but more like, believable.
This is a world where bambiraptor's ancestors stayed in the trees and formed social groups. Over generations they would lose the ability to glide in exchange for larger skulls to support larger brains that allowed the species to survive by outsmarting their enemies. They would, however, keep some feathers for thermal regulation. Eventually their ancestors would put their two feet on the ground again, without ever developing the ability to fly because of their hands.
It's been a while since I designed this critter. I remember making a reason for every detail, but I don't remember all the reasons at the moment. I studied bambiraptors, ravens(a bird with complicated social structures that can use tools), and ostriches(a flightless birds that excel at running).
They are called the folk, although my character says it with an odd accent that sounds like 'flock'. The flock have lost most of their feathers in exchange for skin that can be clothed when necessary. As such, they can populate in habitats all over their globe. Their beaks are small and of the generalist shape. Their scales remain only on their feet and, due to them, the flock have no need for shoes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jendar might have had more culture shock when she came to New Wirral as a downy chick. On her earth, mammals are strange class of animal that only shows up underground or in the water. She is familiar with rodents and lagomorphs, and knows about the cetaceans who swim in the sea, though they are much smaller on her earth. Whole orders such as carnivora, euungalata and primates exist only in the fossil record. There are science fiction tales about flock time travelers who get trapped in the past and have to survive the 'hairy monsters'.
Jendar arrived in New Wirral wearing leg and tail wraps, but as she outgrew these, she had to make do with clothing from the mall: vests and leg warmers. She was raised as a joint effort by Ianthe and the captains at the time. She grew up alongside Skip.
One day while combing beach trash with Skip she found a pack of cards depicting various monsters from yet another world, the 'digital world'. She believes whoever lost said cards also came from that world. She's fascinated by how life can evolve in different worlds.
Skip would go on to become a captain themself, but Jendar's interest was more in biology. She believes that the beasts of New Wirral evolved just like flock and humans did, she just needs to find proof.
She's encountered arevevoir several times, and the bird let her get close when it was feeling ill. Jendar even recorded it, granting her several bootlegs of the unique bird. Her starter tape and her favorite is spitzfyre, however.
Tumblr media
And so her life remained fairly uneventful until she met a human in the swamp who spoke with an unusual, poetic cadence. She agreed to help Viola find her lost brother and along the way, discovered a way to leave New Wirral...

I just found out that Ranger Leader Ianthe and Ranger Captain Skip from Cassette Beasts are not only canon LGBTQ+ characters, but also they are voiced by openly LGBTQ+ actors.
Leader Ianthe is a canon lesbian character who is voiced by a non-binary actor, Liz Morey.
Both Captain Skip and their voice actor Marin M. Miller are non-binary and go by they/them pronouns.
It is good that Cassette Beasts not only has canon LGBTQ+ characters, but also its voice cast includes multiple openly LGBTQ+ actors, such as Allegra Clark, J. Michael Tatum, Kayleigh McKee, Liz Morey, Marin M. Miller and Risa Mei.

minor lenna's inception/cassette beasts spoilers but
i know lenna being the "secret" postgame boss is just a fun cameo largely detached from the story, so they don't need to give her any deeper pretext to be there than giving you a sort of postmortem Hero's Test. HOWEVER,
i can't believe lenna went to a world where people have the technology to SHAPESHIFT INTO MONSTERS and paige had to stay home. do you think lenna told her. maybe amber didn't tell either of them because she could sense what a can of worms that knowledge would be to paige
and in the world of self indulgent thought man wouldnt it be fun to contemplate an au where lenna & paige get isekai'd to new wirral before everything happens with aleph. i actually think there's a really fun concept in lenna, being "the hero of another story", coming in as a late-game mentor for cass in their Hero Era. lenna's inception is a pretty neat, closed arc for her, but i think mentoring another hero from a different world is fertile ground for her. idk. maybe i also just want to see married paige and lenna. i think paige deserves to experience fusion. i also desire the impeccably weird vibes that would come from lenna & paige interacting with ianthe & wilma. idk i think lenna and ianthe could have some really long conversations

Alright, I’m in what I’m assuming is hard endgame in Cassette Beasts, and can confirm, the teams are definitely working.  I’ve beaten Ianthe, all the rematches against the rangers, and all the Archangels fights except whatever happens when I solve the song.
The part is as follows.
Miasmodeus Attacks: Smach, Pustule Bomb Buffs: Raise Arms, Elemental Wall, Mind-Meld Passives: Fireproof, Roll Again (+1 slot), Sugar Rush, AP Refund
Decibell (Kayleigh) Attacks: Siprt, Hurricane, Headshot Buffs: Doc Leaf, AP Boost, Taunt, Echolocation, Air Wall Passives: AP Starter (+1 slot)
Ramtasm Attacks: Smack, Last Rites Buffs: Mind-Meld, Ritual, Nurse, Elemental Wall, Gambit Passives: Shear Luck, Phase Shift (when needed)
Kirikuri Attacks: Smack, Toxic Stab, Copper Chop, Last Rites Buffs: Leech, Poison Pollen, Plant Wall Passives: Splinter
Sppoki-onna Attacks: Spirt, Thunder Blast, Life Absorb, Zephyr, Blizzard Buffs: Fog, Avalanche Passives: AP Refund (+8% effect chance)
Queenyx Attacks: Smack, Life Absorb, Snow Rush, Damage Roll, Last Rites Buffs: Ritual, Gambit, AP Donate Passives: Vengeful Curse
The team has three strategies that we generally employ.  All of them lead with Kayleight and Decibelle, but the exact plan past that opener changes a bit.
Strategy 1: Miasmodeus Miasmodeus is hysterical.  Holy shit, I regret not picking this as the starter.  Poison’s only weakness is Fire, and it can have Fire resistance, which cuts Fire damage 50% and ignores secondary effects.  So far the AI has not figured out to avoid hitting her with Fire moves if they have them, which is great distraction.  To add to it, Mind-Meld means copying over all of Decibelle’s traits, and Roll Again with Mind Meld means both beasts have a chance to apply a second action per turn.  Decibelle has Doc Leaf and AP Boost, the former of which is the opening gambit, the latter of which is the follow-up.  Echolocation makes them spread moves so the buff applies to both.  Miasmodeus uses Echolocation after Mind Melding, and can double up on the stall tactics, throwing out Pustule Bomb to poison the enemy, and building toward the coup de grace: double Headshot.
The pros of the team are that we’re damn near invincible barring super-effective shots on Decibelle.  The stall gaming is real.  It does consume a lot of upkeep turns to keep us rolling.  Also, Roll Again can, at an inopportune time, call in a high-cost attack, ruining the Headshot plan.  Which is never my favorite.  The fact that both have a Shield is also a problem, because sometimes the AI just decides to overwrite each other’s shields, and then we just waste HP for no reason.  So I might remove a shield, depending on who has a better alternative action.
Strategy 2: Ramtasm Ramtasm is very similar, but because of the lack of Roll Again, it’s more consistent to hit Last Rites.  This permits Gambit, which sets up three turns of heavily boosted stats, and swapping Decibelle in to Queenyx to AP Donate for another big shot with Ramtasm.  Damage numbers are comical.  That said, I admit that Queenyx doesn’t exactly do a ton.  I like it, but it’s...lacking some things I’d want.  One of the rangers used Dog Days to extend the Ghost duration, and I imagine it does similarly for Gambit.  Which, if I can find an option that gets AP Donate, Dog Days, and ideally Echolocation/AP Boost, I think that would be a stronger option for Ramtasm to utilize.  If I can find such a beast, I’ll probably add the Ghost effect to Ramtasm, just to extend both effects and be a real shithead about it.
Strategy 3: Kirikuri Kirikuri has my favorite tactic in the game: Leech Poison.  This is, so far, the only combination of traits that has worked on every fight.  Even Archangels just drop to it, so long as you’re defensively strong enough.  The plan is to lead Decibelle and Miasmodeus, and Mind-Meld.  On turn 2, Miasmodeus swaps to Kirikuri, who gets Echolocation, and Decibelle swaps to Spooki-Onna.  The two of them can now Echolocation Leech/Poison the entire team as needed, then have Spooki-onna be a real bitch about thing with Fog and Avalanche.  Fog disrupts special, and allows Kirikuri to continue hitting with melee Toxic Stab if AP is high enough.  Alternatively, Avalanche can block a physical hit while Kirikuri sets Plant Shield and just heals it all off.
Other Factors Realistically, Decibelle, Miasmodeus, and Kirikuri handled almost everything once available.  The other three barely see play.  I’d like to get Ramtasm moving, but that requires Dog Days support.  I’m looking into it.
Queenyx was something I wanted to test out, but has barely been useful.  She just doesn’t contribute much?  Like, I had at one point planned for Gambit -> Vengeful Curse, which the Vengeful Curse does work for allies when Mind-Melded, but it’s not exactly consistent, or a good idea to let a thing die.
Spooki-onna also doesn’t see a ton of play.  Which I feel bad about, I love its design and I like the idea of stalling, but frankly it rarely comes up.  Because the rest of the team is so ridiculous.
We’re on to the phase of the game that seems to mostly be fused shadows, and the only major quests left are the main one to leave, and the signposts in the water (I’m playing on Switch, and the game stutters like CRAZY trying to go near water), so almost complete.  There are three beasts left to find, two of which are unique, and one of which requires a specific type of bootleg.  But, I’m close.
