@angel--emmerson / wellness center / mid morning
“Ángel, Ángel, Ángel, I just can’t deal with this guy anymore.” Felipe slumped his head into his folded arms on the table. “He’s just put me off for the rest of the day.” For about twenty minutes, Felipe had been discussing a possible collaboration with a photographer who was insufferable. Upon chance sighting Angel in Pa’lante’s cafe, he rushed from his seat to join. “What do I do? He’s gonna come back from the bathroom soon. Ay dios mío, I’d rather punch my eyeballs than hear his pretentious nonsense.” He paused, lifting his head up to face Ángel again. “I can’t get you to ban him from the center, can I? I’ve already ruled out poisoning his morning shake.”

@grace-ko / grace’s kitchen / lunchtime
“No, no, no,” he said, waving around the knife with each syllable, lifting the tool midway through chopping the butternut squash into cubes. “I don’t cook for every woman I meet.” He paused, before grinning. “Just the ones I think are pretty.” He finished the piece he was chopping before swiping it off the cutting board and into a bowl. Felipe had come over as his meetings were cancelled and that freed up his day immensely. Between the beef cazuela and caldillo de congrio with fish heads and eels, he figured it was an easier introduction to Chilean food and easier to buy last minute ingredients for. “How do you feel about peeling potatos?” He said, waving the spud in her face.

@felipejvidal
Location: Bello’s restaurant
Tinder fucking dates. They were by far the worst ideas she ever had, but somewhere between the last one she’d had and finding herself lonely in a bubble bath, she’d set another one up. Felipe. How bad could someone be who’s name was Felipe? Maybe she wouldn’t think too hard about that one. Nevertheless, she was seated in the corner of her favorite restaurant waiting for the male who she’d briefly talked to on the app. She liked to keep conversation to a minimum which was probably why her dates had been horrific, but she was mainly saving herself from receiving an unsolicited dick pic. When a male approached, she smiled and stood up to caress him. “You must be Felipe,” she said as she looked him over. He was handsome, better looking than his pictures. “I’m Claire. The social worker.” Had she told him that? “It’s nice to meet you.”
Claire seemed cute, wholesome, friendly and age appropriate. It was wildly different from the type of woman he usually gravitated towards: chaotic, mysterious, troublesome. “Hello,” he said in a grunting fashion and added a nod. Felipe smiled as she touched him, and smiled in response. “I’m Felipe, the book publisher.” It sounded much fancier that it was. “I feel like you’ve got a much more noble profession. I do my best to spread social good, but you know, the written word can only be so much.” In another world with another Felipe, he would have taken this date much more seriously. However, he was just glad to have a gorgeous gal in front of him. He took off the thick purple jacket he had chosen and placed it on nearby coat hook, revealing a smart shirt underneath that was a bit too tight for his muscles. “How’s your day been, Claire?” He grunted, before sitting down at the table.

Location: Fall Fair // SLQ Booth With: Anyone // @silverliningstarters
“You’re listening to SLQ Radio, coming to you live from the Amory Fall Fair. We’ll be back after some word from our sponsors and I’ve had a chance to get some of that bomb-ass kettle corn.” Transitioning over to commercials, Ember pulled their headphones off their head, looking up just in time to see someone approaching the booth. “Hey! What can I do for ya? Got a request?”
“Less of a request, more of a check-in,” Felipe replied. Upon realising what he was about to do, he felt like a high school prom chaperone. Alas, he pulled himself together quickly enough to maintain a joking composure. “I just–for the good of the community, I want to check there are no upcoming Christmas songs? I know the weather’s starting to get cold...but I am morally opposed to Christmas songs being played when fall is only settling in.” He added a hearty chuckle. “But I understand if kettle corn is a more important cause then my grumble.”

🎣 fishing for friends | @matthew-joy
“I’m glad you came along,” Felipe said. They had been silent waiting for the fish, but Felipe wanted to start the conversation again. Initially, Felipe had invited his teenage son from New York City to come for the weekend. He didn’t know the boy well at all, and his last minute cancellation meant that he wasn’t particularly interested in Felipe either. “I could use a weekend out of town, in nature and all that. How’s business been?”

She laughed lightly as he decided what he wanted to drink to, “peace and quiet sounds perfect,” she replied with a smile. Most people would not consider a bar to be a place for peace and quiet, but when you lived Millie’s life, it kind of was. “I hope the same,” she replied. “I’m not sure I can quite do dysfunctional stupor,” she admitted. “I do have to relieve the babysitter at some point and actually feed my children in the morning,” she laughed. “I’m with you on the tiring day at work though.”
“Any difficult customers?” Felipe asked. “I can take on any roughhousers that have come your way today. But not the babysitter, I’m assuming that’s a very nice person for you to trust them with the kids. I don’t know, are they?” He teased, with raised eyebrows and a wide smile. “I’m kidding, peace and quiet that’s our focus for today.” He sipped his glass, making sure to take it slow. “I don’t think about when I was young and stupid. I definitely feel my age, but not any less stupider. Were you a particularly bad youngster? I promise I won’t tell the kids,” he finished with a wink.

Nessa chuckled softly and hummed as she arched her eyebrow, “What? I don’t have the ability to make you nervous?” She joked, if anything he still had that ability to make her nervous. Even though she learned to keep her cool a long time ago, being a woman in a man’s world after all wasn’t easy. She laughed softly as she playfully rolled her eyes, the charm was what had gotten her in trouble in the first time around. She took in the scent of the cologne and hummed softly, “It does, so much that mother might even approve of this date.” She said with a soft grin, “How have you been, Guapo?”
“Mentioning that woman’s a bit of a mood killer,” Felipe said with a wry smile. Obviously, he recalled that her mother was a sensitive topic but it had been so long, so surely time had healed wounds. “I might get nervous if I remind myself of how much time has passed. Time has treated your features well.” He threw in the compliment, as a little addendum. Pinching his moustache, he added. “Me? Maybe not, but enough to convince your team to come. I’m hungry for new writers,” he continued. “It must be my lucky day to get another shot with you.” He meant professionally, as it was a long shot to convince Nessa out of her genre.

Felipe didn’t even respond for a painful few seconds. Normally, heading to The Axe meant he was mentally prepared to see Dessa. But now? She was just there. Shit, he thought to himself. Say something. “I’ve been busy,” Felipe finally mustered to say, albeit a little pathetically. “But no, no, no, not ignoring you.” He took his bluetooth earphones and phone in his pocket. “Has it been two weeks? Wow. Seems like the universe is giving me a sign to catch up with you. I’m just going to Whole Foods, if you want to tag along.” Normally, Felipe’s book buying routine was alongside his groceries routine. The book was the incentive to feed himself. “Usually, I browse here for a long time but I wouldn’t want to bore you.”
closed starter for: @felipejvidal place & time: persephone’s book store, 10 am
Pop culture, mainstream music, movies - these were all things Odessa wasn’t exactly tuned into; she could care less about Selena Gomez’s newest single, could care less about that new disaster movie Netflix was releasing in a week; she hardly had the time to visit her own mother. However, when it came to anything culinary - she was usually on top of it; The Chef Show on Netflix, Ugly Delicious, Salt Fat Acid Heat, Zumbo’s Just Desserts, Sugar Rush - she had watched them all. But Julie & Julia was new, to her at least - and boy was it inspirational. So inspirational in fact, that it led her to use her only day off that week to head into Persephone’s and find Jacque Torres’ Year in Chocolate so she could complete it before the start of winter. How would she do so with what little time she had? Who knew, but there she was, handing the cashier a twenty before making her way toward the exit - only to find a familiar face making their way in.
“Felipe??” Dessa muttered, a smile growing against her features as she pulled open the shop door to greet him. “Hey!” Moving over to let others in and out of Persephone’s, she grasped the book tightly against her chest, sorta kinda not wanting Felipe to see what it was - if he did, he’d probably ask questions, she’d have to tell him the truth cause she was shit at lying and then she’d more than likely turn out embarrassed at having the wild idea of copying a movie. “How you been? Haven’t seen you in like…two weeks. You’re not ignoring me right?”
#dessaclarke#omg BITCH SAME julie and julia is so inspirational#and also#i would kill a man for jacque torres

It seemed that Nessa wouldn’t been able to make it. Sybelle replied to her phone that she didn’t need to worry and that they could reschedule for a next time. Apparently, she got a last minute call with her publisher and needed to go over some details about her book or something like that. Still, it didn’t mean she wouldn’t enjoy her slice of cake and coffee on her own. Sybelle cut a small slice and opened her mouth, moaning at the taste. She approved of it but it wasn’t as delicious as the one her Nana made for her. Sybelle was going to keep eating when a loud masculine voice made her stop. A few people looked at the man, practically glaring at him and waiting to close his mouth so they could go back to eat in peace. She just shook her head and wondered how people could be so rude to others sometimes. “Bad day, huh?” she asked him with a small smile.
“Couldn’t get any worse. It’s impossible to work at home when there’s no working internet either,” Felipe replied, matching her smile. It was all he could muster. Of course, seeing Sybelle did erase the anonymity that Felipe was seeking. But either way, her present made him slightly more relaxed. He was being put on hold, so he stood up and moved to sit opposite her. He could use the friendly company. “Have you had a busy day?” He wanted to change the topic. With Sybelle here, he probably wasn’t getting work done anytime soon. “How’s the cake? Can I have some?”

Setting: Yo Jo Coffee Shop Tagging: Open to everyone! @silverliningstarters
It was an ordinary afternoon in the coffee shop. The buzz of many conversations going on dominated the soundscape of the shop, not even cups landing on tables or cutlery smashing together really garnered attention. That is, until Felipe’s loud obnoxious voice began permeating every customer’s ear. It was like a dragon had awoken from a deep slumber. Then, Felipe took out one AirPod and waved his phone. “I swear I’m not yelling irrationally. I’m on hold with city hall,” Felipe explained calmly. “They’re claiming they haven’t received my complaint. This is total Anglo bias! My surname starts with a J, but I’m all the way at the bottom of the list because they think my surname is only Vidal. Don’t get me started. I’m not one to mess with today.” The man had arrived at Yo Jo because his home’s internet was down. He hadn’t even had the all soothing afternoon cup of coffee he came for, just sat down and phoned up the customer service line.

“Angel,” Felipe replied, pronouncing his name in Spanish. Although he knew Angel hadn’t been raised like that, Felipe thought it was a nice gesture. “I’m seriously impressed with how you’re growing the place. I am very picky about my coffee and treats, but I will not say being pretentious is a serious food allergy.” Felipe grabbed a napkin to wrap the banana nut bread in. He was feeling nervous and would not be able to stomach the sweet treat, nevertheless an event he was too ashamed to say he was scared to go to. “I do love a good seminar,” he pondered whether he should go to that instead. “When is it? I’m way early for the Body Strength class.” His voice broke at the mention of the dreaded class, intimidated by the other participants last week.
Location: Pa’Lante Wellness Center Tagging: @silverliningstarters
“Yo, seriously, you gotta try this banana nut bread, we get it from a place down the block. All locally sourced, it’s..fucking delicious. I mean unless you’re allergic to banana or nuts, you gotta tell me now so I don’t slap it out of your hand.” Ángel laughed as he quelled his excitement, pretty proud of the cafe display they were building up at the front of the Center. It brought in more business, created more jobs and he got to showcase that much more of Amory’s talent. It was a dream and his bigass smile was a clear sign that he was pretty damn happy about it. “You here for a class? We got a real good seminar going today about owning your truth and moving into your power, it’s real uplifting, perfect for this sunny Saturday, you know what I mean?”

Dinner & Wine. Felipe & Nessa.
Nessa honestly couldn’t believe her PR team, she thought they respected her stans on her dating life but apparently she at least need go on a date with this guy. She didn’t mind, honestly dinner and wine she would never turn down plus when they told her who it was she was actually looking forward to it. Of course what she wrote was fantasy and sci-fi, but she loved someone that wasn’t afraid to stand on the right side of history when it came to politics. She licked her lips as she sat in front of Felipe, “Well I hope this doesn’t end with one of us moving out of town.” She joked as she looked at him, her green eyes landing on his. “I honestly just want to say, I’m glad it’s you at the other end of this table.”
Opening his jacket to sit down, Felipe refused to believe it was Nessa. Granted, he immediately relaxed his shoulders and exhaled in relief. “I thought I had something to be nervous about,” he replied. When someone promised him an exciting date with a successful writer, Felipe was suspicious that they sounded a lot like Nessa. “I put on this great cologne and everything.” He stood up, bending down beside her to offer a sniff. “See for yourself, doesn’t that smell expensive? You’ve never smelt me like this!” Around her, he always tried to play up the charm offensive. He did not know why Nessa was so resistant to the memoir idea, but he considered making this a time to warm her up to it.

Whilst Felipe found comfort in quiet days and reading words on a page, getting out and about was just as important. As he grew older, he cherished the carefree nights he could spend. “I want to drink to...some peace and quiet,” he declared, adding a chuckle before taking a sip. “I’m hoping everyone home is behaving themselves.” Placing the drink down, he teased. “Thoughts on drinking ourselves into dysfunctional stupor to forget about life’s responsibilities? I’ve had an exhausting day at work.” He said this fully knowing her work was far more physical than his.
@felipejvidal
Drinking with Felipe was always a good time. He was more carefree than Millie and it was rather nice to spend time with someone like that. Millie could often get caught up in the girls and her work and she needed someone to pop that bubble every so often, Felipe did a great job at that. He was also great with Maisie, and whomever else Millie had as part of her brood at the time. Tonight though was for drinking, the kids are being looked after by a babysitter, who Maisie was all but obsessed with. She raised her drink in Felipe’s direction, “so, what are we drinking to tonight?”

II. BIOGRAPHY.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Addiction, drugs, alcohol, violence.
Felipe comes from a family of science. His father was a biology researcher and his mother was a lab technician. Eventually, his older brothers became engineers and his younger sister wanted to be a doctor. But Felipe? He was drawn to language and culture. As a child, he was a bookworm. Once he finished the limited number of titles (mostly works in Spanish from Chile) on his shelves at home, the next stop was the public library. As a child, he was far from shy despite his head being in the books. The city of Newark was his playground, and he enjoyed being a chatterbox to strangers on street — to the chagrin of his older brothers who were babysitting him. Then, his parents had saved enough money to buy their own home. The catch was that they were living the city, going up the Hudson to the burgeoning town of Amory. His parents loved the place. It was a dream, where they could have better schools and fresher air for their children. Young Felipe had been there for two summers to visit their aunt and uncle. But, moving there was a nightmare. He’d _seen_ the public library there. It did not have enough books for his insatiable appetite for words. This was not a convincing argument for his parents, and the whole family moved to a modest house in Beatrice’s Landing.
Even though he moved to Amory at a young age like eight, Felipe never adjusted. He struggled to maintain the routine he loved in Newark, and hated the public library. His family had even thrown away most of the books they had at home! His mom got a job at Amory University, and would use her staff access to go through the library there too. Although he was a friendly boy, he didn’t warm to his new classmates. They didn’t talk or act like he expected to, and in turn, they saw Felipe as an aggressive person. It was frustrating. He focused on his schoolwork, as his parents expected, so the teachers loved him for being attentive and academic. Felipe’s aim was to use his education to get out of Amory. His parents and his siblings loved the place, but something didn’t click right with him. It was boring. He wanted an exciting city that was probably dangerous, not the safe and clean suburb that his parents adored.
Initially, Felipe enrolled for business at Amory University. It was the closest to science he could get compared to his siblings, but he was disappointed that he couldn’t get into the college of his choice. Afterwards, he managed to transfer to his dream goal: New York City. Once he got away from Amory, he felt so free. He switched majors to English, which he realised was his calling. Throughout his studies, he was convinced he was destined to be a great writer. He drank, smoked, partied and took all sorts of drugs throughout his time at college. What did he need to learn from stuffy professors? When he graduated, he had gotten his girlfriend pregnant and was struggling to find work as a writer. His work was too emotional, too political, too dense yet too shallow. Getting rejected by publishing house after publishing house, Felipe fell into alcohol addiction. His girlfriend and son left him. All of his friends were successful and didn’t care about him. It wasn’t until he got into a bar fight with multiple people one night and was arrested, then his loved ones acted for him. He was very embarrassed that he had to be ‘rescued’, and he very stubbornly resisted getting help.
For the past ten years, Felipe has spent his thirties building the life he wanted. Starting out at an editor, he learnt the ropes of the publishing industry before setting out on his own. Felipe is fiercely independent despite his leftist leanings, but he was sick of the white man game that books was. Now his publishing house, Macondo Press, is going five years strong. Not only has he amended his relationship with his ex and son, but also with Amory. He has found peace in the town and doesn’t want to leave again.
III. PERSONALITY TRAITS.
POSITIVE TRAITS: Independent, Passionate, Articulate.
NEGATIVE TRAITS: Stubborn, Pessimistic, Jaded.
