Album Number Four Hundred Eighty Two. “Head Games” is the third studio album by Foreigner, released on 10 Sept 1979 by Atlantic Records. It was the only #foreignerband album co-produced by #roythomasbaker best known for working on Queen's classic albums. It marked the first appearance of new bass guitarist #rickwills (formerly of Jokers Wild and #smallfaces ) who replaced #edgagliardi (who was fired from the band), and was the last album with founding members #ianmcdonald and #algreenwood , who would leave the band after the recording. #headgames is also the last Foreigner album to feature a lead vocal by guitarist #mickjones ("The Modern Day"). My copy is on #atlanticrecords - SD 29999. The model in the photograph on the front cover is American actress and film producer #lisannefalk . The cover art was criticized by feminists for showing a teenage girl looking afraid in a boys' restroom. But according to Foreigner lead singer #lougramm , the cover was intended to be cute, like a cartoon. Gramm said "The girl is being naughty, erasing graffiti [in the restroom]. She's looking at whoever buys the album, she's been caught." According to Miami Herald critic Bill Ashton, the cover art is a play on the album title Head Games. Atlantic Records publicity director Stuart Ginsburg pointed out that "head is a naval term for bathroom" and Foreigner's media coordinator Susan Steinberg stated that "the girl on the cover is shocked by the graffiti. HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY to Greg Lake, legendary singer-songwriter, pioneering influencer of bass and guitar, co-founder of King Crimson, and lead vocalist for Emerson Lake & Palmer. 

To celebrate Greg’s storied career, one could make a long list of deep cuts and hit songs that are now touchstones of classic rock, from “Lucky Man” to “From the Beginning.” The music of ELP and KC are pivotal to my early development as a musician, and in my solo set I do “Cat Food” and “I Talk to the Wind.” I video’d a version with little preparation, raw-recording it at home on 21 January 2021 (1-21-21). I forsook the solos, not daring to replicate Ian McDonald’s sublime flute work on the original, but I did sing it after Lake’s original evocative model. Pete Sinfield’s lyrics seem to be about a person (straight man) trying to communicate with someone who is self-absorbed or narcissistic (late man), and it’s better to move on and be done with discouragement. Pop Matters called it “a stunning tone-poem of melancholy (that) somehow manages to be somber and gorgeous.” Meanwhile, HB to GL…”Welcome back my friend to the show that never ends…”

Recorded between December 1977 and March 1978, it was Foreigner's only album co-produced by #keitholsen and the last recording with bass guitarist #edgagliardi who would be later replaced by Rick Wills. My copy is on Atlantic Records - SD 19999. #doublevision was the first in the line of many other recordings in which A&R executive #johnkalodner would simply have his name listed twice in liner notes, as a play on the title of this album. The phrase "John Kalodner: John Kalodner" originated when the producer Olsen was wondering just how to credit Kalodner's involvement in the band and the album. In keeping with the double vision theme, guitarist #mickjones came up with an idea of doubling the name. Mick Jones takes the lead vocals on "Back Where You Belong" and "I Have Waited So Long". Add’l photo is the original cover art by #normanseeff . SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “I Talk to the Wind (Take 2)” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRk9lxEmxg4 …There is a deep bond between King Crimson fans, several of whom are my friends who suggested I cover certain KC songs. “I Talk to the Wind” has spoken to me since I was a teenager. In my take (1 of 2) I forsook the solos, not daring to replicate Ian McDonald’s sublime flute work on the original. It was the second song on the 1969 landmark first album by King Crimson, a bittersweet but elegant segue from the metallic jazz dystopia of “21st Century Schizoid Man.” Pete Sinfield’s lyrics seem to be about a person (straight man) trying to communicate with someone who is self-absorbed or narcissistic (late man), so it’s better to move on and be done with discouragement. The signature 1969 KC version was sung by Greg Lake and the music was composed by McDonald—who said it was inspired by Joni Mitchell. Pop Matters called it “a stunning tone-poem of melancholy (that) somehow manages to be somber and gorgeous.”

Also—Belated Heavenly Birthday Shout-Out to Ian McDonald (6/25). Most people know him from Foreigner and KC, but Robert Fripp reportedly said he never intended to be sole proprietor of the King Crimson brand, citing Ian as a co-founder. Ian pursued other ideas with the KC spin-off McDonald & Giles (a fascinating footnote of 70s hippie prog-rock), then co-founded Foreigner—I bought the first Foreigner LP sight-unheard just because his name was on it. His solo album DRIVERS EYES is also well worth seeking, as are his excellent collaborations with Steve Hackett and John Wetton. Meanwhile, thank you Ian for sharing the winds of your spirit and talent.
