TODD: Ian, please. You think You've been pulling my strings this whole time? You thought you were using me, but -- you're the one who's been used. Ian looks surprised and fearful and raises one arm up slightly defensively.
TODD: You opened up a bottomless pit when you tapped into my darkness. And now... (todd appears behind Ian) you are no longer needed.
Todd thrusts a hand through ian's chest and makes a fist. Ian crunts in pain and todd starts absorbing him or something?
IAN: Aargh! Arrh no....

Obsidian
Content Warning: DC has questionable portrayals of mental illness yet again, mentions of Alcoholism and abuse
Summary: A brief character summary of Todd Rice is the son of the first Green Lantern and a founding member of infinity inc.
Comic Issues: Manhunter (2004-) #18, DC Pride 1, JSA (2000-),
Tumblr media
Todd Rice is the son of Alan Scott (Green Lantern/Sentinel) and Rose Canton (Thorn). He’s the twin brother of Jennie-Lynn Hayden and the ‘domestic partner’ (DC just call them boyfriends) of Damon Matthews. Todd and Jennie-Lynn were conceived during the short honeymoon that Alan and Rose had. Rose faked her death in the fire that burned down their cabin and later gave up Todd and Jennie-Lynn for adoption, fearing that her alternate personality, Thorn would try to hurt the kids.
Todd grew up in an abusive home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His adoptive father was an alcoholic and you can imagine how that worked out for Todd. He met his twin sister as a teenager and the two became superheroes Obsidian and Jade, deciding to follow in the Green Lantern’s footsteps as at the time they were only assuming that Alan was their father.
Jennie and Todd were founding members of Infinity Inc, a team of heroes that was mostly full of the kids of the JSA as they had been denied JSA membership initially. Todd at one point had a conversation with Albert Rothstein who was going by Nuklon at the time and currently goes by Atom Smasher where Todd said that he was pretty certain the only people he could ever love were his sister and Al (that’s pretty gay bro).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Todd inherited schizophrenia from his mother (he was and currently is medicated for this), but the thing that actually did him in was the fact that his powers include a connection to the shadow realm. As a result, he was able to see the blackness within others’ souls. This ability gradually drove him insane. During his insanity, he began a revenge plot against both of his fathers, with Ian Karkull influencing him.
His ‘insanity’ was cured only after Todd joined forces with Eclipso and Mordru to seek vengeance against Alan (again. He failed twice). Todd retired from being a hero, which lead to some introspection and the realization that he was in fact gay. He then ended up meeting and falling in love with Damon Matthews, an Assistant District Attorney who works with Kate Spencer aka Manhunter. His powers go dormant until Jennie dies, which leads to him being a hero again but still dating Damon. Damon and Todd are trying to (or were trying to who knows with what DC is doing these days) to adopt a child together with no success due to the fact that Todd tried to plunge the world into eternal darkness. Apparently, that’s disqualifying for adoption.
Now back as a hero, he joins the JSA and serves as the security guard at their headquarters. He also has a whole plotline where he becomes a shadow-y egg and it’s a whole thing but basically, that was nullified so I won’t deal with that.
Tumblr media
Todd and Alan are estranged at best, and they have a rocky relationship though they agree that they love each other. In DC Pride, Todd and Alan share a heart to heart where Alan explains that Todd being openly gay and happy is what gave Alan the strength to come out which is incredibly sweet when you remember that Alan lived through the 20s, 30s, 40s, etc where being openly gay was a good way to have an awful life.
Tumblr media
Overall, Todd’s wonderful. He’s funny, he’s multitalented (the man can fly helicopters), he’s also very honest and he’s able to keep others on his toes (He joked once that he was ‘cured from being gay’ just to get to look at the expressions of the various JSA members and lemme tell you their expressions were genuinely priceless). Todd and Damon are also really cute together and DC needs to let them stay happy.

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
March 12th Obsidian

Todd Rice is the son of Alan Scott (the Golden Age Green Lantern) and Rose Canton (the one time supervvillain known as The Thorn).  Alan Scott did not know of Todd and his twin sister’s existence and Canton put the two children up for adoption fearing that her being a former villain would ruin their lives. Unfortunately, the two siblings were split up and Todd was adopted into a highly abusive household. In his early teens, Todd discovered that he possesses super powers. Specifically, he could manifest and manipulate a dark force of energy emanating from an alternate dimension. This energy enabled him to fly and could also be used to create constructs. Soon thereafter, Todd also discovered his parentage and the fact that he had a sister. Renaming himself ‘Obsidian,’ he sought out his sister (the super hero Jade) and the two of them helped to form the group of legacy heroes known as Infinity Inc. Later, Obsidian joined the Justice League. Obsidian suffers from the mental disorder schizophrenia.  The villainous scientist, Ian Karkull, used Todd psychological difficulties so to manipulate the young man, tricking him into committing evil deeds. Alan Scott was able to help Obsidian overcome Karkull’s manipulation and ongoing treatment has enabled the hero to better cope with his mental illness.   Obsidian has subsequently joined the most recent iteration of The Justice Society. Actors Lance Henriksen and Dan Payne portrayed an older and younger version of the character in the television series Legends of Tomorrow. Obsidian first appeared in All-Star Squadron #25 (1983).

Today in History
In 1941, the Justice Society and their allies battle Ian Karkull who has mastered the arcane forces of the Shadowlands. The radiation released in Karkull’s defeat bath the assembled heroes, apparently extending their lives and affecting them in other, unknown ways.

What do people think happened to Todd?
Obvious options are separated via him getting adopted; being sent to different homes; Todd getting trapped in the Shadowlands or, least likely based on current evidence, Todd dying. He could also have been kidnapped?
If he was adopted then they could give him a similar backstory to in the comics where he lives with his alcoholic adoptive father motivated by a desire to care for him. Which would be a good narrative foil to both Cyndi and Rick because of their home lives. Or since they have changed it from Jennie having a good home in the comics and him having a bad one. He could be living a perfect life with a loving family which would also cause conflict since she is the one out to find him. So she might feel really hurt if she finds out that he was just living it up.
If they were just sent to different homes it would be the easiest to write if there was no intent to cause conflict or anything. Since they wouldn’t have huge experience gaps that might make it difficult for them to reconnect and they could simply mirror each other. But this is pretty illogical since when she turned 18 she got Todd’s toy car.
The possibility of him being trapped in the Shadowlands is kinda rooted in the fact that Todd was first mentioned in the same episode as The Shade being more solidly introduced. In the comics I believe they are both connected to the Shadowlands. I believe there is a storyline in the comics where Obsidian (Todd) is influenced by Karkull to bring Darkness to the world and Eclipso is actually one of his allies in this since his weakness is sunlight. He also gets possessed by the Shadowlands in this. So in theory Todd could be brought in as an ally of Eclipso under the influence of the Shadowlands. Alternatively he could be brought in via The Shade.
There is very little evidence that Todd is dead. But for some reason a toy car belonging to him was in that box. There was Alan’s Ring and Todd’s car but nothing of Jennie’s which indicates that something happened to Todd before she got put in the group home otherwise why would she receive his toy car. However this could also be evidence that he was already trapped in the Shadowlands at this point.
Him being kidnapped could be by their mother Thorn in the comics (although if they want to include Alan Scott being gay as he now is in the comics they might go with her being surrogate since he would have died when they were quite young) or another villain such as Ian Karkull. They only real evidence for this is the car and the fact Jennie seems to feel she needs to search for him using her ring instead of using the internet and given the time it has been. Her knowledge of her brother would make him easier to find although a name change would make it harder. As previously stated the car in the box implies her brother was MIA prior to her going in the group home.
Overall I do not know what is going on with Todd and Jennie but I hope to see them. They are some of my favourite DC comics siblings. I hope she finds him!

However, Flint and Skinner miscalculated the dosage, and "Socker" Smith died as a result. Not wanting to get caught, Flint and Skinner framed Ted for their crime.
After Ted was arrested, Flint and Skinner then arranged a hit on the prizefighter to prevent the truth from coming out. Although, Ted survived the assassination, the police officers who held him in custody were killed. Ted then fled the scene, and also wrongly accused of murdering the officers. While on the run, he came across a boy who was robbed of his Green Lantern comic. The boy described Green Lantern which inspired Ted to become a vigilante. He create a costume of a large black cat, called himself Wildcat, and vowed to clear his name. He forced Flint and Skinner to confess, and cleared himself of all charges. Ted then continued to fight against crime as Wildcat.

During World War II, Ted became a member of the Justice Society of America and the All-Star Squadron, and had a romantic relationship with a time-displaced Queen Hippolyta. In 1945, King Inferno and Zatara cursed Ted with nine lives, which allowed him to recover from fatal inquiries. In the 1950s, Ted impregnated his then girlfriend Irina, who gave birth to Ted's eldest son Jake Grant. Unfortunately, Jake was kidnapped by the Yellow Wasp, one of Ted's sworn enemies. Although Ted searched for Jake and the Yellow Wasp for years, he was unable to locate either of them. As a result, his relationship with Irina disintegrated. However, Ted had a one-night stand with Marilyn Bronson, who became the mother of his youngest son Thomas Bronson. Later, Ted was critically injured by an out-of-control Red Tornado, but his goddaughter Yolanda Montez became Wildcat in his place.

LGBT History of Superheroes: Obsidian
Tumblr media
The shrouded man wanting created as the DCU’s “visible gay character”, Todd Rice aka Obsidian was a member of the Justice Society of America.
Tumblr media
Todd Rice is the biological son of Alan Scott, aka the Golden Age Green Lantern. After growing up in an abusive adoptive household, Todd discovered he had a twin sister and the two later discovered they had powers which led them to become superheroes following in the footsteps of the Green Lantern.
Due to both his powers and heritage, Todd slowly developed schizophrenia and gradually became insane due to his ability to see the darkness of the shadow realm that imbues his powers.
Obsidian would later become corrupted by the villainous Ian Karkull, turning against his teammates and allies Obsidian was forced to blanket the world in darkness. This battle came to a close in a heated battle between himself and his adoptive father before he retreated to the Shadow Realm.
Tumblr media
Eventually Obsidian was brought around from his mental instability causing his defection to the darkness and once made well he retired from his superhero ways. Coming to terms with his sexuality, Todd met long-term lover Damon Matthews.
Despite his powers having a dormant period, Obsidian returned to his superhero ways after the death of his sister and still remains in combat as well as in a relationship with Damon.
Tumblr media
In other medias, Obsidian tends to appear whenever the JSA appear, his most prominant role particularly in live-action is in Legends of Tomorrow during Season 2. Here we met both a young and old version of the character showing his time as a superhero and retired as he was in the comics.
What is interesting about the character is it was stated the character was created to be a positive representation of gay men in comics. Despite the fact the character was portrayed as a very vanilla and reserved representation, he definitely paved the way for DC to make more riskay choices with future characters.
So what do you think? Is Obsidian a realistic example of mental illness and is his romantic storyline genuine? Post your comments and check out more LGBT History of Superheroes and Supervillains entries as well as other posts.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA
