With my friends on the first day of our Medical School. #nationalwomenphysiciansday #throwbacksunday #medicalschoolfriends . Today, February 3, is the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1849. Dr. Blackwell initiated the movement that helped women gain entry and equality in the field of medicine. . “If society will not admit of a woman’s free development, then society must be remodeled.” ~ Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell . The number of women doctors gradually increased in the last two decades. Statistics show that 35% of physicians are women. However, the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine last year revealed that women doctors are still experiencing gender bias and inequality in the workplace. Clearly, there is still work to be done. . #IAMBLACKWELL #WomensDocsInspire #NWPD (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtcD0LoAgmy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rtcp8yn7acn

Dr. Fe del Mundo (1911–2011) was a Filipino pediatrician who was the first woman to be admitted to Harvard Medical School in 1936 — over ten years before the school officially began admitting women. Today we celebrate all the amazing women physicians out there on Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell‘s birthday, many are pioneers like Dr. Fe del Mundo and Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. Did you know that women make up over a third of the physician workforce? Happy National Women Physicians Day!
National Women Physicians Day was first observed on 3 February 2016. The date commemorates the birthday of physician Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910), who was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States. A pioneer of her time, Blackwell continues to be a role model for women who dream of becoming a doctor.

On February 3, honor the path that female doctors have paved since 1849 as we recognize National Women Physicians Day.
This day marks the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1849. Dr. Blackwell initiated the movement that helped women gain entry and equality in the field of medicine.
"If society will not admit of a woman’s free development, then society must be remodeled. ~ Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell"
National Women Physicians Day celebrates the courage of Elizabeth Blackwell and the accomplishments of female physicians everywhere. At the same time, the day strives to bring improvements to the workplace for the growing number of women physicians entering the field of medicine.
While the number of women doctors gradually increased in the last two decades, 2016 statistics show 35% of physicians are women. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine last year revealed that women doctors earn on average 8% less than their male counterparts. That discrepancy along with nearly a third of women physicians reporting sexual harassment in the workplace and large majority experiencing gender bias. Clearly, there is still work to be done.
National Women Physicians Day recognizes not only the strides that have been made by generations of women doctors but that a balance must be struck that allows women to succeed professionally while balancing family. Join National Women Physicians Day in celebrating these accomplishments and supporting women physicians as colleagues, friends, family and doctors.

time to hit the books, but celebrating National Women Physicians Day! I hate that there are still disparities, but I get to be the change to fight for equality for women within my chosen profession. Here's to female physicians and how we have challenged the field of medicine to grow and evolve and to (hopefully SOON) be a true representation of what we all hold true: EQUALITY amongst everyone, no disparities, and quality care for everyone. Thank a Woman Physician today!

Maybe it’s time for physicians to lean out
A few years ago, my colleagues and I started a non-profit called Women in Anesthesiology. I started medical school late and had two children in residency (earning the delightful label of elderly primigravida or, if you prefer, geriatric pregnancy). My co-resident and I noticed few women in our department, and even fewer in leadership. We charged forward, starting a local, then national group. At the same time, a separate Facebook entity called Physician Anesthesiologist Mom Group (PAMG) grew from a few hundred to over 2,300 members, while the Facebook Physician Moms Group (PMG) skyrocketed to over 63,000.
The time is right. Everywhere we look, we see public discussion of women in the workforce and large institutions are addressing the issues of equity and equality. The #ILookLikeASurgeon, #whatadoctorlookslike, and #IamBlackwell hashtags are social media’s contributions to changing the image, understanding, and bias associated with medicine and women.
Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In (both the book and the website), the Huffington Post, and the New York Times are all throwing their media weight behind the idea that though it may be a challenge, now is a great time to be a professional woman. And, if it’s not a great time, then at least it’s not supposed to be a lonely time.

#DrDom killing it in our #BreakTheCeiling video! (Link in bio) @ddub_in_scrubs with @repostapp. ・・・ Edited still from @aloharadio's new video: "Break the Ceiling". It's a super fun catchy tune with an empowerment message delivered by a female lead singer. When the room is painted pink and the first line is "I'm on a mission and I don't need your permission" you know she means business! It's my new fave jam! Get out there and break some ceilings, ladies! Happy National Women Physicians Day! #girlpower #nwpd #IAmBlackwell #ilooklikeasurgeon #aloharadio #breaktheceiling (at Recess Studios)

Hard to believe Dr.Elizabeth Blackwell had to fight a society that didn't believe women should or could be physicians. I'm thankful for pioneering women that did what people said they couldn't.
