Um bom livro, que mostra a própria confusão com que se defronta sua personagem principal, uma idosa que acaba indo para uma casa – mas que tem apenas 3 outros residentes e 2 cuidadores – que se mostra algo um pouco inusitado, ou seja, não é uma casa de repouso normal... E, ao longo do livro, essa estranheza aumenta, mas a gente nunca sabe o que é a realidade e o que é a visão da personagem, que pode estar já meio senil.... Enfim, um livro que, quando acaba, você não sabe bem o que aconteceu... cabe a você decidir...

“Penso no que significaria ter mais tempo. Para mim, Pete, Ruth, Hilbert. Mais rodas de conversa. Mais comida. Mais sono. Eu conseguiria pintar mais. Mas o que o trabalho significaria se fosse infinito? O que significaria um relacionamento se durasse para sempre? Como seria um dia se não tivesse fim?”

"I'm Thinking of Ending Things". Novel by Iain Reid.

No worries, no spoilers ahead! Hey, do you know this excruciating feeling when your heart breaks? No? Well, buckle up, read this book, and find out what it's like. This is one of my favourite books now. Nothing is what it seems here. The ending and the twist at the end are perfect and heartbreaking. (The movie is different and it ends a bit differently, to say the least... I prefer the book.) Mind bending story about regret, mind, thoughts, past and present and future, about loneliness.

2nd photo - Several pages are filled with one phrase, repeated over and over and over again... I love this part. These pages give me the feeling as if not only the story is mysterious and weird, but the book itself - the physical object I'm holding in my hands - transforms into a strange artifact.

Vocês já passaram pela experiência de estar lendo um livro, o começo ser meio chato e monótono, então ficar interessante mas faltando uns 10% pra terminar, desandar tudo? Pois foi isso que aconteceu com Eu Estou Pensando em Acabar com Tudo ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Em todo o livro, não consegui me apegar a nenhum dos dois personagens principais: Jake e sua namorada, que até então acabou o livro e não tem nome. Eu achei Jake um homem bastante condescendente e a narradora, apática. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lá pela metade do livro, a leitura melhora um pouco com a introdução do suspense. Apesar de ter demorado a aparecer, até que conseguiu fisgar minha atenção. Mas faltando umas 20 páginas pra terminar, não sei bem o que aconteceu que eu já não entendia mais nada do que era narrado e pronto! Acabou-se o livro. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ O final eu captei a mensagem pois já suspeitava o que aconteceria vide o título do livro, mas toda a sequência que levou a isso simplesmente não consegui entender. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Eis então meu desabafo.. mas diga lá: já aconteceu algo parecido com vocês? I liked the unreliable narrator and the strange scenes. The build-up of the suspense was carried out well, but the ending didn't please me. I was seeking something more grotesque or fear-inducing for the ending, considering the thriller that was the novel. Overall, it was a decent psychological thriller, not enough horror, but recommended to anybody seeking a non-heavy horrorish psychological read. This is the October botm for @chickpicksbookclub . From the super lows come...a feeling of serviceable normalcy.

Hell, I actually feel pretty good today. My tactic is to be busy as a hell and don’t allow any time for reflection. (Isn’t THIS a form of reflection?) I got up early and watched some of a movie. Two cups of coffee.

I began to think about how busy the second half of today is going to be so I walked down to the coffee shop. Three more cups of coffee, and I read some poetry by Sharon Olds and read a little more of I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and am quickly, deeply invested in it. (I started reading it after I read that Charlie Kaufman is directing a film version. I am a little proud of myself for reading and liking a novel that made a buncha’ fuckin’ lists...)

As I left the coffee shop, a pretty young woman walked up to me and said “You look very nice today.”

I was caught a little off-guard by the compliment. I managed something near a smile and a “thank you”, and saw the older lady she was with flash a half-smile, likely a little embarrassed by her companion’s kindness. That seems a funny thing but even I almost expected the statement to be followed by a pitch of some sort. Or something about Jesus.

I began the walk back and, about a quarter pf a mile away, had a vehicle pass me and turn into a lot. It had a Pennsylvania plate. And it was the two ladies from the coffee shop. Ha.

I am revisiting a movie I haven’t seen in many years, In the Soup. It is better than I remembered and I liked it very much when I saw it a dozen or so years ago. It makes me miss Seymour Cassel and New York- but just the New York of my mind, largely imagined and mostly dead.

I didn’t know what to do with this photo because the book’s contents were so confusing I couldn’t think of any way to photograph it. Does that even make sense? This book is a psychological thriller/horror with the tagline “You’ll be scared, but you won’t know why”, and that is certainly the truth. I was so unsettled while reading this. However, I also figured out the ending rather quickly, so I found the payoff lacking and didn’t enjoy it overall the way I hoped to. Not to say this was a bad book though, quite the opposite. It is incredible well-crafted and unique. It’s confusing (much like this review) but in a good way? I mean you really just have to read it for yourself. If you‘re looking for unsettling, confusing, psych thrillers, start here. I just wish I didn’t have so much knowledge in what the ending talks about.
