i understand why this isn't the case, but i think everyone should be able to play an instrument. the same way i think everyone should speak multiple languages. the craft of music is a language in and of itself
#im VERY stoned rn tho so please keep that in mind#also i should make it clear i don't really play any instruments#i've played many instruments#but i never managed to master one#for a while i was getting there with my voice#i haven't regularly practiced for years now tho#i mean dont get me wrong i can still sing. but singing in a classical sense doesnt come to me as easily anymore#i was taking voice lessons from a friend for a little bit but i couldnt afford it anymore#living in an apartment doesnt help either#i used to sit in my room and unselfconsciously sing at the top of my lungs - BELT like musical theatre belting#sometimes doing a bit of screlting i'm ngl#but that was in a house#i mean my family had to put up with it#i dont know why i put all of this in the tags instead of making a new post#oh its bc im stoned

As a euphonium player, I get excited every time I see a euphonium/baritone show up in pop culture. Someone finally recognizes us! Though I feel like it's always a coin flip between "hey we need some sort of obscure brass instrument" and "we actually want a euphonium". I'm looking forwards to see which one this turns out to be.
One of the telltale signs that someone is familiar with euphs is that 95% of us fit into a personality type that I think of as "go with the flow". We don't 'choose' to play euph, but rather pick it up as the path of least resistance. Maybe all of the other instruments were already taken (like Kumiko from Sound! Euphonium), or it fills a hole in the ensemble's instrumentation (this was me), or there is less competition during auditions (maybe a third of fellow euphs/tones from my school years). Usually our laid-back nature extends beyond music as well - the only time you'll find a euph as an instigator is when it involves dancing to the music or planning where to go to lunch. There's a reason why we all show up to Tuba Christmas but don't care that our instrument isn't in the name of the event :P
I have no idea if they talked about it on the stream, but I'm hoping to find that Bassline is the chillest of the Leithanian ops. Like Noir Corne levels of chill. Or Elysium in beach mode.
I hope that lore for how their callsign was chosen is included too. I can already imagine the conversation;
"It's a Euphonium, I use it to channel my arts... Maybe you've heard it called a Baritone? They're pretty similar... No, I don't sing. Though if you were singing I guess it would be in the Tenor range... Well, a saxophone is a woodwind, this is more like a trombone... Yeah, it does look like a small tuba... *exasperated sigh* Yes, I do know how to play Seven Nation Army... sure, 'Bassline' sounds fine."
#arknights#bassline#I've had that exact conversation with so many family/friends/acquaintances who ask about my instrument#this was written for me and the like three other euphs who play arknights#euph = euphonium or euphonium player#tone = baritone or baritone player#baritones and euphoniums are different but even most of us don't know what the difference is lmao#I'm choosing to believe that bassline plays a euphonium because of the fourth button on the slide with the pennant#unless the TL proves me wrong in which case I knew it was a baritone all along#I guess tubachristmas is probably an american thing? but it's so fun and absurd (and free!) and everyone should go at least once

Just thinking again about this gorgeous art Bast made for me of our Kohga, and how he's a loud, brash kinda fella but then also has these quiet moments.
Fun facts/headcanons though! Our best guy's been playing shamisen since he was about five, his mama taught him, aaaaand he can actually play two of them at once using his self-duplication trick! It's pretty cool, he can keep track of all four hands at once and do neat stuff weaving more than one melody around each other and then making phrases sound real emphatic by doing them on both instruments simultaneously.
Kohga often plays at Clan matsuri and parties and it's always a huge hit with the whole banana crew. <3
#kidk says stuff#yiga clan#master kohga#kohga can play six strings just it’s two sets of three not one six-string guitar lol#i do this thing sometimes when i have ocs/blorbos who are musicians where i try to find an irl musician who sounds like them#like a voice claim but for an instrument#and i've been listening to tons of shamisen lately and so of course came across the yoshida brothers#anyway their more traditional music sounds like when kohga plays as two of him heh#((ps of course my kohga is a musician. so many of my dudes are even if they aren't shown to be in canon lol. it's so predictable for me.))#kidk headcanons

You're getting a bass this weekend? Sick. What kind if you don't mind me asking?
It's pretty dependent on what ones are available at the store, I'd like to try to get one secondhand (some people say you feel closer to instruments you buy new? But for years I learned and played on a secondhand saxophone and loved the instrument dearly) so it depends on what's there and the price. Hopefully there's something in my price range because I'll need an amp too. I also, uh, have no clue how to play a bass, so I figure I'll start on an inexpensive-but-decent one and see how it goes from there?
I read up a bit and saw good things about some Squier Classic Vibe and Ibanez SR300 for beginners, Yamaha in general too. I'm not picky about the brand right now, I figure I'll get a more nuanced opinion as I learn and figure out what sound I want? One reason I want to go to the store is so I can try to get my hands on some to hear the sound of them, and choose from there.
#sorry it's not a more nuanced answer but alas i am a total beginner#i've been wanting to play music again for years rbh but for reasons beyond my control my saxophones are. out of reach#it's. complicated? or. well. not really. but it is frustrating#but they've been out of reach for years and i dont know when i'll get them back#but i dont want to buy A Third Saxophone so im switching instruments! it was between a bass and a theremin tbh#i also don't know if i want to lean into a more metal sound or jazz sound and that'll determine future bass purchases i imagine#if you know more about basses and have advice would be happy to hear/read it#(also. am hoping that an amp for a bass will work for a theremin in case i decide to learn that in the future)#((it COULD be worse i COULD be building an Apprehension Engine. which was made specifically to score horror movies.))#i am excited to learn to play bass though. i've missed music a lot and i think if i can get into the habit of playing regularly it'd be good#sorry for all the tags too. lmao. i don't have many people to talk to about this

Just me and my 14-day long YouTube focus music playlist of soundtracks, instrumental and classical music tracks against the world.
#put it through a 'how long is this YouTube playlist' tool thing.... bro 14 days of music......#I'm always adding things to it too. (will take any instrumental/soundtrack recommendations to add!!!)#but i did add a bunch of stuff without checking them properly#so also frequently removing some stuff#because i play it on shuffle and occasionally something will play that pulls me out of focus mode#and i just delete it#I've got so many other tracks and hours of music i can be super picky about anything that slightly breaks my focus lol#ramblings of a bystander

actually sitting down and learning an instrument is actually the closest thing we have to learning magic. like. every day i can feel myself leveling up and i can do things with ease today that i could hardly do yesterday
#bassposting#i've had my bass for 3 years almost but i hate the music school nearby and the ones farther away are too expensive and. far#so i kind of just learned songs before but didn't have that many actual skills like i couldn't even use my pinky for example#now that i'm sitting down and actually getting the patience to learn its like. holyyyy shit#i've mostly just been focusing on piano for the past year (i play 3 instruments piano guitar and bass and alternate between the 3)#but holy shit. that one bojack quote about it gets easier but you gotta do it every day

somehow I got roped into being some sort of assistant sound designer/music director/composer for Macbeth and I'm supposed to help all the singers and possibly compose short tracks for the show. This is despite the fact that I don't read sheet music and most of my basic music comprehension/education is from doing musical theatre and being a rhythm gamer so uhhh let's hope this goes well LMAO. I already composed a short loop cause my director really likes looping/repeating motifs but idk if he's gonna end up using it.
#nat rambles#theatre#my director knew that i played rhythm games and was like yeah you do the lead percussion#and I'm like aight bet#imma sneak so many rhythmic references to things only i will know and i'll be cackling on the inside the entire time i do it#so far I've snuck in some kingdom hearts stuff#the underlying beat in l'oscurita dell ignoto#and stuff from the Muppet show#a nunber that miss poggy did called “what now my love”#those three muppets accompanying her doing the “bum badada bums”#that piano piece is ehhh and idk if it's actually gonna get used#i also play piano and other instruments by ear#no official lessons/training so don't rag on me for it lol#mackey b

I’m always impressed by the quality of your writing and the sheer creativity that you put into everything you do. If I could be one tenth as talented I should count myself blessed indeed. Plus you are kind and supportive towards others in a manner which does you great credit.

✧ I won’t really write descriptions for these, but see original post tags for explanation/commentary on the song snippet ✧
#I actually like the background piano of this more than I like the weird singing improvised over it#probably just because it was vaguely cool to clank out something that even vaguely sounds like maybe an actual chord#that might exist or something despite - again- having so little clue about the piano or how to read music that I could#not even point out like what the names of the notes are or etc. ghghjbj#Which is still funny because if you improvise something and also have no idea how to read or identify musical notes then you will#never be able to play it again because you couldn't identify how to lol. THAT'S WHY I LIKE singing!!! I could hear any tune once and on the#spot repeat it back exactly as long as it's within the range of noises I am physically capable of producing#But with tangible insturments it's like... you have to memorize.. the names of things. or where to put your hands. or#be able to name and recognize something and keep that in your head. Whereas voice noises just come instinctually and naturally#I do think I could probably learn an instrument if I really tried but I guess the thing is just like.. I already have 4724867289 other hobb#es that I am trying to split my time between that I barely have enough energy to dedicate to all of them and hardly make#progress at any of them because I'm spread so thin jumping back and forth between them. should i REALLY pick up another???#one thats going to take years and years and lots of practice?? It's kind of like learning languages. I REALLY want to learn some other#languages and I'm not like terrible at it from times that I've started to beofre in school and stuff. but it's just like.. do I really have#the TIME?? I think I need a logical justification to warrant a certain level of investment like.. if I knew for certain that in a year I'd#be moving to france then of course I could dedicate many hours to learning french because now it's necessary and despite#all of my other projects that I have going on I need to make time for it. But if I'm just learning it for the sake of doing it? then??#why should I not simply dedicate that same amount of time to my writing or my sculptures or something else? etc?? Like if I for some reason#was talked into starting a band with one of my friends or something then yeah maybe I'd learn an instrument but. I just see no#practical need to or way to justify the time investment when I currently have so many other things going on and music is my silly hobby lol#ANYWAY.. all that to say. BECAUSE I have no clue what I'm doing and likely never will. then even when I do the most basic#boring sounding bit of barely passable zero skill hardly capable piano plonking or something I'm always like#wowww. wow. I did something. wow. music is so magical. peace and love on planet earth. hhbjhbjhb#ANYWAY.. so I like the background more than the singing but. eh. still sounds a little fantasy elf choir-esque#bantasy tag

in the power of Noticing Things The Xth Time Around the instrumentals-imitative "doot. doot. doot. dooWAH" vocals that kick in during the second verse of centerfold? superlative
#i've heard the song a fair number of times & always enjoyed it a lot. high energy & fun; a little goofy in great ways in subj & sonic style#it is extremely correct to work w/imitative vocalizations in your music no matter what. put in more. More#(and the Vocal [doot] being on the backbeat as opposed to the Instrumental [doot]....superlative!]#and did i Mention that [verse into chorus] synth line...the drumming underneath it...#even the faux Live Performance psychout ending. a song about a Specific Ass Situation thank fucking god. deserved to chart like that.#also anytime i say Dad Rock i use it fairly neutrally lol. i'm a fan plenty of songs that would qualify; to be more specific#lmao love the instances of [no matter how many ties i hear it i cannot distinguish this sequence into phonemes in a way that corresponds to#words (or words that fit into the context in any comprehensible way)] i.e. went ''okay time to look up lyrics b/c i will always be going:#flowers What about her dress??'' & the line is apparently ''while i was thinking about her dress'' lol love when the revelations of#mishearing are funny like Ah right....and claims it's ''slipped me notes'' rather than ''slipping notes'' but doesn't change too much#being like [i cannot decipher these lyrics] is generally a more fun casual version of ''especial tendency to struggle w/audio processing''#versus like not knowing what tf someone's said in this part in a movie or smthing no matter how many times you hear it#or of course the most A Problem: not being able to parse what's being Spoken in some in-person situation#might be an occasion you can't get anything repeated; might be an occasion where for some reason/s a repeat doesn't even help....#also forever the Idiosyncratic Origin Stories behind [genuine friendships formed when you are autistic] e.g. like yeah one of my good#elementary school friendships? was one where we did parallel play; maybe never or very rarely actually Spoke; our Distracting Each Other#was punished with more of a singular intensity than i ever saw Anyone's ''distracting each other'' interactions....#took years of being at the same job (part time; so not like monday thru friday 9 to 5 Always being there at the same time anyways)#for me & a coworker to start talking & become work friends; then regular friends#their name was angel; so the menace i became when we had such a dad rock station on & these alignments occurred#though i would be engaging in singing along to things in general lol so

Azazel Hiraeth Kilig Strake Silverquill Student (this started as a strixhaven campaign and we just kept going after graduation.) Also a noble (which is a little more important then the fact he was an english major) Lizardfolk College of Eloquence Bard
