New interview video from TheGamer: 'Exclusive Interview with The Directors of Dragon Age: The Veilguard'
"Will there be returning characters? Will the light prevail against the darkness? Will our comic book and graphic novel knowledge of Dragon Age finally come into play?"
[source]
The video has some footage from the DA:TV booth at SDCC.
Info from this video:
More will be shown of the skill trees over time
"We have 700 new unique characters to talk to"
This may be the biggest game they've ever made
"Rivain, that more tropical feel. Something we've never really been able to do before in Dragon Age is, what does the coast of Rivain look like?"
Lots of love has been poured into how the areas look. They all look and feel different, but also coherent and consistent with the style of the game as a whole
The writers did a good job of finding the light in the darkness of this story
Just after timestamp 5 mins 0 secs, John says Emmrich's surname Volkarin aloud
Emmrich's character design is kind of like the more classical, Hollywood actor type
On returning characters, they're excited for people to see them, especially in the context of how 10 years have passed in-world since the last DA
Each choice in the game, especially the major ones, has significant consequences on gameplay, what content is available to you, and also how characters in the world regard you. "No choice should be easy, we never want to make players feel like there's a right choice. There's always going to be a consequence, some that you don't expect, and some that change the world in real ways"
On casting - Ashley: "Casting is a collaboration. The ensemble that the companions create was basically where we started. We put the character art on the wall, we saw the writing, we auditioned vastly and we assured that the cast was very dynamic and complimenting, and opposing, to each other. We spent a lot of time in getting those companions the juiciest they could possibly be"
The acting talent was cast across 5 years
#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: dreadwolf#dragon age 4#the dread wolf rises#da4#dragon age#solas#bioware#video games#dragon age: the missing#dragon age: the missing spoilers#as suspected (see a prev post)- a new round of new interviews with the devs from sdcc :D#this is number 3 that i've seen so far#(ik ppl always wonder about how names are pronounced so ^^)#i wonder if the 700 characters as a figure includes or doesn't include the returning characters?

WIBTA for marking up my friend's sheet music?
ok so I (15m) have a friend (17f) and we both play cello in the classical music ensemble at our school. we have both been playing cello for approx 7 years. we had very different musical upbringings: she learned to play cello in a class with a bunch of other kids, and from what I gather there were many other instruments and the teacher took kind of a hands-off approach, which is typical for the kind of elementary school she went to. I, on the other hand, learned through private lessons (which I don't think I'm better for, it's just different) and my teacher (who I still take piano and cello lessons from) is a little bit obsessive when it comes to correct technique and stuff. I care a little less about technique than my teacher, but I definitely developed quite a few of her habits: I always pay really close attention to what the sheet music tells me, especially dynamics and which direction my bow needs to go in, or how many notes I'm playing in a bow stroke. part of this is because that's what the composer would have wanted and also because when I started my teacher would make me mark everything, and I mean EVERYTHING in my sheet music. we're talking fingerings, bow markings, highlighting every chreschendo and decrescendo, putting the counting in for all of the rhythms and more. now I typically only mark super important things, like if I keep forgetting a note or something, and I rarely mark my cello sheet music in ensembles, though everyone has seen me mark my bass music, since I'm new to bass.
Recently, since it's about 2/3rds of the way through the school year and we have a good group, my ensemble has been playing more challenging stuff. the parts or more intricately layered and dynamics are a pretty big thing, especially for the cello section, since we basically have one line for half of a piece which is just to play some half notes that crescendo and decrescendo over and over. and it's like, all we do, like it's a pretty big part of the song. the issue is that my friend just kind of ignores the dynamic markings and bowings in the music and what the other cellists are doing (there's three of us, including me and her and she sits in between us) so she just kinda plays the piece at the same volume. the whole time. and it's written right there. and she's heard me play it solo without the ensemble before, so in theory she knows how to do it. and after seven years of playing the cello, you should have the bow control to play quietly.
now, this wouldn't annoy me so much if her ignorance wasn't a recurring thing. last year, we played aquarius with the jazz ensemble and we both really liked the piece. except we had this one part. we had to play a bunch of tied whole notes in the beginning. just two in a row and then we'd change bows. (if you don't play an instrument, a tied note is basically when the note is played over two measures, in this case we would play the same note fore eight beats, and then reverse the direction of our bow) now, I can hold my bow in one direction for eight beats. it's not fun or easy and I'd rather play a melody or bass line to begin with, but if you're playing quietly (like we were supposed to be) you can maintain a pretty steady pace for eight beats in one bow. my friend NEVER did this. she would just run her bow back and forth on the note until we moved on to the next and then do the same there. and I'm talking like she'd play maybe ten notes while we played one. which, obviously, through off the rhythm. we weren't as close last year and I didn't know she'd been playing as long as she had, so I ignored it. but, she kept doing it and she still does. I've confronted her about it multiple times, saying how it's like if you breathed half way through a note on a wind instrument, how it messes us up because her bow will go in a different direction than the other cellos and hit me in the elbow a lot, and how it makes us look weirdly messy. every time she just kind of says okay and walks off.
now, I think my friend could benefit from having her sheet music marked like my teacher used to make me, because clearly just mentioning it to her is not enough and as we move on to harder music it's making us look worse. so, wibta if I brought some extra pens and highlighters and reminded her to circle or highlight different dynamic, rhythmic and bowing notations if she doesn't play them the first few times?
What are these acronyms?

at long last i finished watching TOS (only like.... a year after i meant to originally watch it)!!!! now i only have TAS left and i'll have seen all of Star Trek!
some TOS opinions and takeaways under the cut:
fundamentally i'm just not a TOS fan. i watched a lot of the episodes when i was a kid so i definitely have nostalgia for them and i can recognize when episodes are good and how much the show has influenced pop culture and science fiction as a whole but just as like.... a show to sit down and watch for fun? i enjoy pretty much every Star Trek show more than TOS.
i primarily like Star Trek (and fiction more broadly) for the characters and while there are some really great character moments for Kirk, Spock, & McCoy and some one-off characters, i just struggle to find that 60s style of plot driven scifi engaging (which i find fascinating because i still LOVE 60s era Doctor Who which has much much worse production values than Star Trek and i feel like most people would say is less engaging). and to be fair, a lot of the reason i found some of the TOS plots boring was because they were the blueprint for so much other scifi media so i can't really hold it against the show.
that said, i really don't want it to sound like i hate TOS. i don't. i just think the ideas and concepts it has are better explored in the movies & future tv series than in the show itself. i totally get the appeal especially for people who grew up with it.
there were plenty of episodes i did really really like though (ones i've seen before and new ones that i've barely heard of) and my top episodes are: The Trouble with Tribbles (a childhood favorite of mine), City on the Edge of Forever (an obvious classic), Is There In Truth No Beauty (i had never seen or heard of this episode before but i loved it so much! i thought it had some really unique storytelling and i loved Miranda so much so i totally see why they brought back the actress for tng), Journey to Babel (another obvious pick), Court Martial (one i had seen before but i liked it much more now that i was more familiar with the characters), The Conscience of the King (great Kirk episode, tragic backstories, and fun stuff with Hamlet!), and The Ultimate Computer (an old scifi concept but executed really well on every level)
most of the episodes i aggressively hated were just the really sexist & racist ones. Elaan of Troyius, The Paradise Syndrome, The Omega Glory, etc. i'd say about 60% of the episodes i just... don't have strong opinions on at all. they're fine.
i do really like Spock, Kirk, and McCoy, i definitely ship mcspirk some (yes McCoy is essential to the Dynamic). Spock is a pretty obvious character to like given how he's the prototype for pretty much every alien othered character who came after tos. it's been said before but Kirk is so much of a more likeable character when you set aside the "handsome male hero womanizer" archetype and realize that in most episodes he's a very genuine compassionate and sensitive leader who's been through some great traumas. and McCoy i definitely don't think about quite as much but he's the essential "id" to the dynamic, the one rooted in humanity and bringing back a sense of individual personhood to Spock (who's a bundle of repression) and Kirk (who constantly goes through the captain arc of "my ship and my crew comes before myself")
i do (as i've said before) prefer shows that emphasize an ensemble cast so i'm always a bit :( at the lack of time we spend with Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, Chekov & Chapel. i like them all but it'd be nice for them to have some more depth.
the TOS movies still remain my favorite part of TOS era. i genuinely really love all of the movies (even Final Frontier despite it being Like That, there is a good movie hidden in there)
#i won't put this in the main tags because i doubt most people want to see my non-committal “yeah it's a fine show idk :/”#anyways i need to take a break to reset (and rewatch some of Voyager) before tackling tas i think#but tas is also really short#might rewatch the aos movies just because it's been Awhile though (and i need to review them on my spreadsheet)#my posts

Centipede—Septober Energy (Esoteric)
youtube
In June of 1971, the impossible happened, or maybe it’s just impossible now. An aggregate residing under the rather misleading, or at least incomplete, moniker “big band” converged on Wessex Sound Studios in London and recorded, under the direction of Keith Tippett and for a major label, the diverse and ultimately indescribable music comprising Septober Energy. It was to be the only album by Centipede, performing Tippett’s variously organized compositions, and it has now been reissued from the original tapes in a package that should prove as definitive as the disparately fragmenting and congealing sound-energies swirling from the speakers.
Listing the musicians would be a fruitless task; just check out the album’s Wikipedia entry for full details. Suffice it to say here that core membership from King Crimson, Soft Machine and Nucleus forms the heart of the venture, which was also produced by Robert Fripp. While he doesn’t play, Brian Godding, guitarist from Blossom Toes (whose albums have also enjoyed recent deluxe Esoteric reissues) provides still underappreciated distorted riffage, especially on the second piece. Even to cite those three groups as the orchestra’s power nexus is far from complete, as the personnel list comprises many of the finest improvisers on the English scene at the time, including Paul Rutherford, Maggie Nicols, Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana, Harry Miller and so many others. Their ensemble and individual contributions fuse all manner of transcultural classical, jazz and prog influence to form the four-part epic, each piece one side of the double album.
Yes, there was a previous CD version taken from the master tapes, but there’s something richer about the sonorities here, something full, dark and sparkling by turn, presenting all instrumental and vocal details with new depth and amazing perspective. What now emerges with the most stunning clarity are the dynamic extremes. Godding’s raunchy lines blast their way onto the soundstage as wasn’t even the case with the first vinyl issue, but the album’s opening moments ring forth with crystal percussive clarity. Ditto the third part’s inaugural minutes, the vocals floating over the silence in something conjoining icy serenity and anticipation, and then those sinewy and delicious percussion dialogues, courtesy of Robert Wyatt and John Marshall, thrum, rush and roar only to fade, making room for a fusion of military and circus as exciting as it is confounding, as if Charles Ives had contributed passages to King Crimson’s Lizard. Best of all is the droning sections bookending the first piece, somehow raw and delicate, a foundation of tone transformation supporting constantly changing color and ensemble size, the initial six-minute arc anticipating the kaleidoscopic freakout and ritualistic repetitions to follow. Equally poignant are Keith Tippett’s effortless piano arpeggiations and the meditative unisons of Nicols and Julie Tippetts voices as they buoy shimmering string harmonics later in the track.
The album is a minor miracle of constantly morphing acoustic space, and this must be a consequence of Fripp’s production, which can now be appreciated afresh. Even beyond that, it cries freedom, a communal salute to a point in time when the enthusiasm underpinning such multileveled cross-reference and the projects housing it was real and immediate, perhaps less defined but inimitably palpable. If excess occasionally looms large, it is always tempered by a chamber-music veracity as the never-murky waves and rivulets ebb, flow and trickle in majestic succession. Syd Smith’s superb liner notes set the stage and spin the narrative yarn in his typically engaging and inclusive fashion. Taken as a whole, the package speaks to a time and a musical environment in which anything seemed not only to be possible but in reach, nearly tangible, the proximate dawn of another day that cycles through Julie Tippetts’ lyrics manifest. The organization gave several concerts; were any of them preserved? Either way, with the exception of Carla Bley’s monumental Escalator Over the Hill, it is difficult to think of another album encapsulating so completely the diversity in unity occurring when so many talented musicians gather in creative celebration. The fact that it is now reissued with the care it deserves is heart-warming.

THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Universal Pictures
SYNOPSIS: Based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's novel “Dracula,” the film tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London. Strange events befall the doomed crew of the Demeter as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.
REVIEW: This project was bouncing around Hollywood for a bit till André Øvredal landed in the directors chair and it set sail. Over the years this chapter of the Stoker novel has been immortalized in several great films that have tackled the “Dracula” novel. In THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER we are introduced to the crew and passengers on the two week sail from Carpathia to London and the rise of Dracula.
Bragi Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz’s screenplay is a solid evolution of Stoker’s chapter. They jump right into the tale and the mythology as the Demeter quickly sets out of port. We are given a quick introduction to Clemens, a doctor and a man of science trying to get passage back to England. As the story progresses and we are presented more of his background story he clearly becomes a stand-in for VanHelsing, but a novice. There are a total of eight other men on the ship, a bunch of livestock, and a stowaway, Anna, who is a snack for Dracula. You could easily draw references to a classic haunted house tale or 79’s “Alien.” Other than Clemens and Anna we get a flavor for the other characters and a sense of dynamics of the ship. The film has a classic genre film feel and as such there is no depth of character that emotionally engages the viewer. The plot assumes we bring an awareness of Dracula and the rules. While the viewer might know the rules of the game, clearly these characters do not. I was surprised that Anna, who lived in the village under the shadow of Dracula’s castle, didn’t have anything to offer them to fight the demon. It does treat the material with respect and is a mature horror film that presents some of the issues presented in the novel but never fully embraces them. I think they take a couple of liberties with the vampire rules, but they are exploited in a way that I found ambiguous.
The production values are breathtaking. They built the Demeter’s interior in Germany and the exterior in Malta, and it was set in a water tank that looked out on the ocean. The ocean sequences look as good as any seafaring film with a larger budget. The creature design is a combination of prosthetics and visual effects and looks great, especially how they go about showing it the shadows and darkness, and it evolves. There is just the right amount of blood and gore, after all it is a vampire film, and it looks great. Director André Øvredal, whose credits include “Trollhunter,” “The Autopsy of Jane Doe,” and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” is a fan and well versed in the cinematic language of the genre and crafts a thrilling and terrifying film. The score is by composer Bear McCreary, whose TV shows such as “The Walking Dead,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Caprica,” and films like “Happy Death Day” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.” He delivers another amazing composition that enhances the atmosphere and tone of the film.
The film has a solid ensemble cast. Veteran actor Liam Cunningham as Captain Elliot presents a complex character who is thinking beyond the voyage and his future, but still presents the gravitas of a veteran sea captain. Doctor Clemens is played by Corey Hawkins, with credits on the stage and screen. He does a solid job creating the character’s troubled psyche and he is believable as a man of science struggling to deal with this supernatural entity. Actress Aisling Franciosi, who plays Anna, and the young actor Woody Norman, Toby, create these likable characters that offer the viewer the opportunity to feel a little sympathy for them. Both are fighters and I found myself rooting for them right up to their bitter end.
THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER is an excellent high seas horror epic that does a terrifying job of expanding this segment of Stoker’s novel “Dracula.” It’s a solid addition to the evolving “Dracula” mythology. I know there are some Stoker and “Dracula” fans and scholars who might be put off by some of the liberties they take in the final act of the film. However, there is enough here and is well written that they should be happy with the majority of the film. Regardless, vampire devotees are sure to love everything about the film and it will be the hot topic of their discussion for the next few weeks.

but lens type does factor into perception of subject, especially faces!
omg vinny don't start talking about camera lenses and tech stuff like that, you're gonna make me all hot and bothered 🥵🥵🥵
the classic example of this is how you should always take portraits of faces by standing from a distance and zooming in, rather than walking up to the face physically. this creates a sort of fish bowl effect and to this day, the fish bowl lens effect shot of will watching el get bullied in the lenora courtyard is burned into my brain. ST has never used that shot before. i think it must have shown will's utter paralysis and shock, but they didnt use it for him in rink o mania when he watched as she was getting brownie shake thrown on her. its a shot that made me chuckle and i still don't know why they used it because you def werent meant to laugh right then. its very unflattering and odd. maybe s5 will reveal all.
this is backwards but the shot at .36
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NxC6WSTVC8
I wish I had more technical knowledge so I can ramble on and act up about it with ya, but I'm such a novice hobbyist I don't even want to pretend. Always learning more, taking on way too vast an array of hobbies, such is the photography thing! Jack of many trades, master of none heehee. And that's ok!! Dazzle me with your knowledge, anon. Loving this!
Very interesting breakdown of that shot - I don't mind it I think, but now that you mention it, it certainly does have and odd effect, like it's stylized but not far enough to have done something with just that slight twist of shot effect. Fascinating.
Maybe I'm off base as well, but it seems like they really like their symmetry and centering on this show. The one big criticism I have is how they frame stuff sometimes, that it's not dynamic enough. They really struggle with an ensemble shot. They love that V formation line up. I want blocking to be a little more natural. And less stop and stare, with so many scenes. It got kind of more apparent as the seasons went on. Like Robin and Steve just standing there as Vecna burns. Or characters in the background suddenly stationary. Or the lineup row when the Cali gang gets out of the van when they return to Hawkins. Oh, they love that lineup shot again and again. It's a little cheesy sometimes. I don't have many complaints! But it's one that just makes me go 🫤 when I think too hard about certain scenes haha
Ok, ending with the comparison. Yeah, kind of odd when you look at them side by side. His face looks completely different with these perspective choices. And for what? Maybe now that I'm thinking about it, the school scene does kind of make him seem even more frozen and exposed, younger. Prey animal vibes. I don't know!

Piano Lessons for Adults: Unlocking the Joy of Music
Learning to play the piano as an adult can be one of the most rewarding pursuits. Whether you’re returning to an old passion or starting fresh, piano lessons offer numerous benefits that extend beyond just mastering the instrument. This article explores the advantages of adult piano lessons, tips for getting started, and how to make the most of your musical journey.
The Benefits of Learning Piano as an Adult
Cognitive Enhancements: Playing the piano engages various areas of the brain, improving memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Studies have shown that learning an instrument can enhance cognitive functions and even delay the onset of age-related decline.
Stress Relief: Music is a powerful stress reliever. The act of playing can provide a meditative escape, helping you to unwind and express emotions in a healthy way. Many adults find that piano playing serves as a form of therapy, allowing them to channel their feelings creatively.
Social Connections: Joining a class or a community of fellow learners opens doors to new friendships. Whether it’s through group lessons or informal jam sessions, playing the piano can foster a sense of belonging and connection with others.
Personal Fulfillment: There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from mastering a song or technique. As you progress, you’ll experience a boost in self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment that is hard to match.
Getting Started: Tips for Adult Beginners
Set Clear Goals: Before starting lessons, think about what you want to achieve. Do you want to play classical pieces, learn to accompany yourself while singing, or simply enjoy playing for leisure? Having specific goals will keep you motivated.
Find the Right Teacher: Look for a piano teacher who specializes in adult education. A good instructor will understand your unique challenges and tailor lessons to suit your pace and interests.
Choose the Right Piano: Whether you opt for an acoustic piano or a digital one, make sure you have a quality instrument to practice on. A digital piano with weighted keys can be a great alternative for beginners, especially if space or budget is a concern.
Practice Regularly: Consistency is key. Aim for short, focused practice sessions several times a week rather than infrequent, lengthy marathons. Even 20-30 minutes a day can lead to significant progress.
Be Patient and Kind to Yourself: Learning an instrument takes time, especially as an adult. Celebrate small achievements and don’t be discouraged by setbacks. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.
Making the Most of Your Lessons
Engage with the Material: Choose music that resonates with you. This will make practice more enjoyable and keep you motivated. Whether it’s pop, jazz, or classical, playing music you love enhances the learning experience.
Utilize Technology: There are many apps and online resources available that can complement your learning. Consider using metronomes, sheet music apps, or video tutorials to support your practice.
Perform When Ready: Sharing your music with friends and family can be a fulfilling experience. Whether it’s a casual gathering or a more formal setting, performing can boost your confidence and reinforce your skills.
Stay Curious: Don’t hesitate to explore different styles and genres. This keeps your learning experience dynamic and exciting. Experiment with improvisation, composition, or even joining a local ensemble.
Conclusion
Embarking on the journey of learning the piano as an adult can be an enriching experience filled with growth, creativity, and joy. By setting clear goals, finding the right resources, and embracing the process, you can unlock a lifelong love of music. So why wait? Dive into your piano lessons and discover the beautiful world of music waiting for you!

I have a kid who is an obsessive Supernatural fan who forced me to watch many, many episodes. So I’ve thought a lot about that show as an heir to XF.
To me it’s a pretty obvious line to draw. For one, Supernatural filmed in Vancouver, had Kim Manners, had Mitch Pileggi, had the Unremarkable House, had lots of other common cast/crew, etc. There were XF references, too.
But also just because it was a show about two protagonists who traveled all over the U.S. staying in crappy motels, investigating supernatural cases, sacrificing personal life for the calling. It had mytharc plot over seasons as well as MOTW episodes. Plus, the angsty protagonists’ deep-seated psychological motive is trying to right a childhood trauma brought about by otherworldly causes.
The two main characters (Sam and Dean Winchester, for those who never watched) are brothers, and they’re definitely different from Mulder and Scully. There is no believer / skeptic dichotomy. They’re younger, more Midwestern, more overtly traditionally masculine than Mulder (especially in early seasons), not law enforcement (although they actually impersonate FBI agents constantly). They wear flannel and listen to classic rock. They make a big deal of being folksy regular people and having common sense (especially Dean).
I always troll my kid by saying the show was probably supposed to originally be some 2000s Bush administration version of the XF: “Give me Mulder and Scully, but make it so that they’re not coastal elite smarty pants liberals, and instead a pair of dumb good-looking bros with weapons from the heartland that you want to have a beer with.”
That’s an overstatement. I don’t think that’s really fair to the show, or at least not fair to Supernatural the way it evolved over its zillion seasons. They DEFINITELY started to complicate masculinity on Supernatural. Their most ardent fans got real young and real interested in queer relationships. I won’t even get into all this. There are like forty million Supernatural Tumblrs.
But Supernatural actually did have kind of the same problem / strength of XF in that it really depended on its two main characters. There was very little ensemble. There WERE secondary characters. (Very notably Misha Collins as Castiel, who was famously shipped with Dean. Destiel remains the top AO3 ship of all time to this day, I believe). But Castiel was only semi-regularly on the show, kind of like the Gunmen on XF.
The show also had regular antagonists (like Crowley, played by XF alum Mark Sheppard). But the show was kind of notorious with fans for killing off Sam and Dean’s allies, especially female characters. It always ended up being Sam and Dean alone again.
One effect of Mulder and Scully being the only main characters on their show was that it made the ship seem sort of inevitable. It made it seem like it was those two characters versus the world, which is inherently kind of romantic. You might THINK that the two protagonists of Supernatural being brothers would rule this out, but you would be wrong. That ship name, if you don’t know, is Wincest (because the brothers’ last name is Winchester). I believe that Wincest is the second biggest ship after Destiel. So yeah, that’s a thing, even when the show was definitely not trying for it. Two main characters with scant supporting cast are gonna be shipped come what may.
Maybe it’s obvious, but I don’t love Supernatural like I do XF. Supernatural has some strengths for sure. But in the end it’s about the smartypants protagonists and the very specific dynamic between them. I love nerdy Mulder and Scully, and I especially love their intellectual sparring, which was written by people who cared about the substance of what they were saying, and not just by people who wanted “banter.”
Second, the acting was top shelf—especially the acting together. Yes, OP, I completely agree, the interplay of GA and DD off of one another? Heart-stopping and enthralling. No shade on Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who were indeed great on Supernatural … but I’d watch GA and DD do insurance commercials together. It’s a cliche to talk about their chemistry, but there really was something in their scenes.
Finally, yeah, listen, I am emotionally hooked by MSR, and I just don’t think I could go down the Wincest road.
Sorry for the essay, OP. I’m just a really bad ranter, and you unleashed some thoughts I guess lol.
what's really insane about the x-files is that nearly every show that's somewhat followed its formula (bones, lucifer, castle, etc) keeps some amalgamation of mulder and scully as its main couple, but they feel the need to supplement that main couple with an ensemble cast that are in nearly every episode. mulder and scully are pretty much it for the x-files. of course there's skinner and the gunmen, but they don't appear even in a majority of the episodes (and certainly not in a major way). there's probably a lot one could say about why, but i think the reason it works is because scully and mulder are so rich with characterization. for me, they're the closest movie/tv gets to real people, even if their connection to each other is beyond what any of us could have in a normal relationship. they're so multi-faceted, so complex, so contradictory. like, mulder's incredibly empathetic but can be a jerk. scully's by the book but she'll be held in contempt of congress for what matters. even something like scully's relationship with her father is so complicated in a way that it churns out episodes like never again or beyond the sea. the way david duchovny and gillian anderson act against each other on screen is heart-stopping, enthralling. even when they're a trainwreck, you can't look away. it's just so interesting to me how, even when shows are blatantly pulling from the x-files (and are good in their own way!) they're too afraid to really do the x-files. y'know?

How to Improve Your Sight-Reading Skills on the Violin by Violin Buffs such as Heather Hamood
Becoming a professional violinist is a journey that demands dedication, perseverance, and a broad set of skills. Among these, sight-reading stands out as a crucial ability. The capacity to read and perform music at first sight is indispensable for auditions, ensemble playing, and efficient practice. Strong sight-reading skills allow musicians to tackle new pieces with confidence and efficiency, enhancing their overall musicianship and adaptability. This skill not only saves valuable rehearsal time but also opens up more opportunities for performance and collaboration, making it an essential competency for any serious violinist.
Understanding and mastering sight-reading can seem daunting, especially for those who are just starting. However, with the right strategies and consistent practice, anyone can improve their sight-reading abilities. This blog will explore various techniques and approaches to help you enhance your sight-reading skills on the violin. From foundational music theory to practical exercises, these insights will provide a comprehensive guide to making sight-reading a seamless and integral part of your musical journey. By incorporating these methods into your daily practice, you can build the proficiency needed to excel as a professional violinist.
Understanding the Basics of Sight-Reading
To improve your sight-reading skills, it is essential to understand the fundamentals. Sight-reading involves quickly interpreting and playing unfamiliar music with minimal preparation. Start by familiarizing yourself with different key signatures, time signatures, and rhythmic patterns. Develop a solid foundation in music theory to recognize scales, intervals, and chord progressions instantly.
Additionally, practice reading music without the violin first. This helps you internalize the rhythmic and melodic structures before playing. Focus on scanning the music, identifying challenging passages, and mentally preparing for shifts in tempo or dynamics. By mastering the basics as emphasized by violin enthusiasts like Heather Hamood, you can approach sight-reading with greater confidence and accuracy.
Developing a Systematic Approach
A systematic approach to sight-reading can significantly enhance your skills. Begin by scanning the entire piece to identify key elements such as tempo, dynamics, and any challenging sections. Take note of key changes, accidentals, and complex rhythms. Mentally prepare for these elements before playing the piece.
When you start playing, maintain a steady tempo, even if it means playing slower than the indicated speed. This ensures accuracy and helps you stay on track. Focus on maintaining a continuous flow, avoiding the temptation to stop and correct mistakes. By adopting a structured approach as encouraged by violin buffs such as Heather Hamood, you can navigate through new pieces more effectively and build confidence in your sight-reading abilities.
Practicing with Varied Repertoire
Exposure to a wide range of musical styles and genres is crucial for improving sight-reading skills. Practice with diverse repertoire, including classical, jazz, folk, and contemporary music. Each genre presents unique challenges, from complex rhythms in jazz to intricate ornamentation in classical pieces.
Moreover, incorporate different difficulty levels in your practice routine. Start with simpler pieces to build confidence and gradually progress to more challenging compositions. This incremental approach allows you to develop your skills systematically while expanding your musical horizons. Avid violinists including Heather Hamood convey that by practicing with varied repertoire, you become a more versatile and adaptable sight-reader.
Utilizing Technology and Resources
Technology and modern resources can greatly aid in improving sight-reading skills. Numerous apps and online platforms offer sight-reading exercises and games designed specifically for musicians. These tools provide immediate feedback, track progress, and offer a wide range of practice materials tailored to different skill levels.
Additionally, consider using play-along tracks and accompaniment software. These resources simulate real-life performance scenarios, helping you develop timing, intonation, and ensemble playing skills. By leveraging technology and available resources as suggested by violin enthusiasts like Heather Hamood, you can enhance your sight-reading practice and make it more engaging and effective.
Incorporating Daily Practice
Consistency is key to improving sight-reading skills. Incorporate sight-reading exercises into your daily practice routine. Dedicate a specific portion of your practice time to sight-reading new pieces or exercises. This regular exposure helps you develop the necessary reflexes and familiarity with reading music at first sight.
Furthermore, challenge yourself with sight-reading in different contexts. Join ensembles, participate in chamber music groups, or collaborate with other musicians. These experiences provide real-world opportunities to apply your sight-reading skills and adapt to different musical environments. By making sight-reading a daily habit, you ensure steady progress and continual improvement.
Seeking Feedback and Guidance
Constructive feedback and guidance from experienced musicians and teachers are invaluable for improving sight-reading skills. Participate in masterclasses, workshops, or lessons with professional violinists who can provide personalized insights and strategies. They can identify specific areas for improvement and offer tailored exercises to address your weaknesses.
Additionally, record your sight-reading practice sessions and review them critically. Analyze your performance, noting any recurring mistakes or challenges. This self-assessment helps you identify patterns and areas that require focused practice. By seeking feedback and guidance as underscored by violin buffs such as Heather Hamood, you can refine your sight-reading skills and accelerate your progress.
Improving your sight-reading skills on the violin is a crucial step towards becoming a professional musician. By understanding the basics, developing a systematic approach, practicing with varied repertoire, utilizing technology, incorporating daily practice, and seeking feedback, you can significantly enhance your sight-reading abilities. Remember that consistency and dedication are key. With regular practice and a strategic approach, you can become a proficient sight-reader, ready to tackle any musical challenge that comes your way. Embrace the journey of continuous improvement and enjoy the rewards of enhanced musicianship and confidence in your violin playing.

How Lace Socks Can Transform Any Outfit
A Touch of Elegance
Lace socks bring an instant touch of elegance to any outfit. Their delicate patterns and intricate designs can transform a plain ensemble into something sophisticated and refined. Pairing lace socks with a classic pair of pumps or ballet flats adds a layer of texture and detail that enhances the overall look. Whether dressing for a formal event or a casual day out, lace socks can elevate your outfit with minimal effort.
Vintage Vibes
If you’re a vintage fashion fan, lace socks are a must-have. They harken back to earlier eras when lace was a prominent feature in clothing. Combine lace socks with a high-waisted skirt or a pair of Mary Jane shoes for a retro-inspired look. This combination exudes a nostalgic charm that’s both timeless and fashionable. You can also mix lace socks with a modern dress to create an exciting contrast between old and new styles.
Adding Texture and Depth
One of the most appealing aspects of lace socks is their ability to add texture and depth to an outfit. Lace features a unique pattern that can break up the monotony of a simple outfit, adding visual interest without overwhelming the overall look. Wear lace socks with a monochrome outfit to introduce a subtle yet striking detail. The intricate patterns of lace can also create a beautiful play of light and shadow, enhancing your outfit in a way that solid colors often cannot.
Playful and Fun
Lace socks are not just for formal occasions; they can also inject a playful and fun element into your wardrobe. Opt for lace socks in vibrant colors or quirky patterns for a whimsical touch. Pair them with sneakers or ankle boots for a youthful and trendy look. Lace socks can also add a playful contrast to more serious pieces, like a tailored blazer or a structured dress, making your outfit more dynamic and exciting.
Seasonal Versatility
Another advantage of lace socks is their versatility across different seasons. In cooler weather, they can be layered over tights or worn with knee-high boots to keep you warm while still allowing your style to shine. During warmer months, they can be worn with sandals or low-cut shoes, providing a touch of elegance without overheating. Their adaptability makes them an excellent accessory for year-round fashion.
How to Style Lace Socks
With Dresses and Skirts: Lace socks can be paired with short and long skirts and dresses. For a romantic look, wear them with a flowy dress or skirt. For a more modern twist, try them with a fitted dress or a skirt with a high slit.
With Trousers and Jeans: Lace socks can also be worn with trousers or jeans, especially when you want to add a touch of flair. Opt for cropped pants or roll up the cuffs of your jeans to show off the lace details.
With Shoes: The type of shoes you choose can dramatically change the look of your lace socks. Opt for classic pumps or flats for a sophisticated look, or try sneakers or ankle boots for a more casual vibe.
Color Coordination: While classic white and black lace socks are versatile and timeless, don’t shy away from experimenting with colors and patterns. Matching your lace socks with your outfit or using them as a contrasting element can create a stylish statement.
Care and Maintenance
Proper care is essential to keeping your lace socks looking their best. Hand wash them in cold water with a gentle detergent to preserve the delicate fabric. Avoid wringing them out; gently press out excess water and lay them flat to dry. This will help maintain their shape and prevent any damage to the intricate lace patterns.
Lace socks are more than just a trend; they’re a versatile and stylish accessory that can breathe new life into any outfit. Whether you’re aiming for elegance, vintage charm, or a touch of fun, lace socks offer endless possibilities for transformation. By incorporating them into your wardrobe, you can effortlessly elevate your style and make a lasting impression. So next time you want to add something extra to your ensemble, don’t forget the power of lace socks—they might be the game-changer you’ve been searching for.
