The Hojo Mindset
This is also a character study into the thoughts of Hojo. This is also an explanation of how I personally have to think when writing Hojo.
Hojo never reveals the true purpose of his experiments. He gives the board enough to know there Gil is being spent in the right place and continues doing what he's doing. In fact, until the day atop the Sister Ray, Hojo never reveals the truth of any plan around him. He knows. He absolutely knows. But it's far more entertaining to watch the Neanderthals around him scurry in confusion.
Every decision he makes lacks human emotion. Every one of them is backed by pure logic. Emotional impact means nothing. In fact, emotional impact is only considered if it can be manipulated into achieving his goal. Be it for experimental results or to finally see his theories proven correct.
Now, a lot of Hojo's you'll see around are cruel for the sake of being cruel. Evil. Sadistic. I don't...have that in me. So instead of your stereotypical evil scientist cackling in the corner, I lean into the logical thinking. He does not answer a question directly. He does not allow any Specimen to understand his true goal. But worst of all, every torture is carefully crafted for an exact result.
It's terrifyingly simple. Action then consequence. Refusal to accomplish the assigned task means forcing the specimen into a far worse scenario. If the Specimen succeeds, then all other examinations are pushed up to the new intensity. If the specimen fails, and they will be given plenty of chances not to, surgeries begin.
"Endure the pain, Sephiroth. You have yet to reach your threshold.
The more you endure, the greater the power that will awaken in you."
Everything has a purpose. Everything has reason. Every experiment has a goal.
And every torture breeds results.

Derry Girls and Ted Lasso being the same genre of storytelling that i adore with all my heart
something-something-the-power-of-love-and-friendship, the best and worst moments of life often will coincide, incredibly real and flawed and lovely characters, comedy gold, and both shows always leave me with that heartwarming/aching feeling

Alright let's talk about this then. I'm gonna start with the specific traits you bring up that you claim are included to be a "joke," i.e. his body movements, loud laugh, etc. You claim it's in there to be made a mockery of and yet I can't think of a single instant in which a character makes fun of harry's movement or his laugh. Alan (and it is alan) didn't include these to be "made fun of." The body movement honestly has nothing to do with being ND and everything to do with an alien in a human skin. Same goes with Harrys voice and laugh and how he speaks. Alan has talked about all these decisions in depth into why he made them. They aren't inherently ND or there for us to relate to but we CAN relate to them. I think you're thinking because something is comedic or funny, that means they're "making fun of" the trait itself but they aren't. It is a comedy. If some of the humor lies in the physical aspect of Harry in a human skin, that's okay. It doesn't mean they're making fun of it or ND people who relate to it. Besides, it's not something that ever goes away.
Not to mention how Alan has said several times over Harry's laugh is HIS OWN LAUGH. For the most part, he is able to control it. But sometimes, it comes out loud and abrupt just like Harry's. Harry's laugh is Alan's laugh unfettered.
Now let's talk about the ACTUAL added traits that were most likely included specifically for NDs. For example, harry having sensory overload. Or preferring to be alone. But I'm gonna emphasize the sensory overload for a second here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's take the new york trip. This isn't scripted. There isn't even a line talking about this. No one comments on it. Asta sure doesn't. Its just THERE. Alan made this decision to portray Harry being overwhelmed by nyc by placing him specifically in sensory overload. That is an acting decision. We know this because we know Alan is very aware of what sensory overload is/experiences it because it is in his show Con Man (which he wrote and directed himself). And it's a beautifully done scene where everything slows down for both the character and the viewers and all you hear are the overarching sounds in the room. Not only do we rarely see sensory overload depicted in media, but to showcase from the perspective of the one in overload rather than everyone outside of it? That if nothing else proves to me Alan knows exactly how sensory overload feels and CHOOSES to give it to Harry.
And it's not just in New York. If you pay attention, any instance of Harry being in a crowded area, it's the same. At family patience day... a few times when he's walking outside... you'll see him scrunch up his shoulders when people get too close to him. Is that inherently autistic only? Not at all. But that felt like me. That made me feel SEEN. And no character ever makes fun of him for that. ITS NOT EVEN POINTED OUT. It's simply there for our eyes to see and some people may not even take notice. That's representation. That's a nod to NDs. That's a nod to sensory overload.
It's not a joke. It never becomes a joke. It becomes a core aspect of his character. So many autistics related to this specific scene because it made us feel SEEN.
Now let's shift to the whole premise of the comparison to Harry as a child. One, comparison to a child isn't a bad thing idk why everyone thinks that. It isn't insulting. It isn't meant to be demeaning. It's the closest comparison simply because children don't have emotional regulation or know right from wrong. Harry is learning, like a human child AND THATS NOT A BAD THING. They don't call him a child when presenting ND or autistic traits. They compare him to a child when he may not understand something inherently human. And that's where some of the humor lies because it is a comedy. Again, comedy doesn't automatically mean they're making fun of it.
No one calls him a child when he doesn't want people in his house. No one calls him a child when he's blunt. They just accept it. They don't forsake him for it. A great example of this is when Asta makes Harry go to the poker game. Yes sheriff Mike wanted Harry there to get info but there isn't a single instance of a character going "why did you invite him? He's weird" or anything of that sort. They include him. It's the same on the reservation. They just take him in, every. Single. Time.
I do agree in the beginning of s2 especially, I thought Asta being exhausted by him not understanding why saving everyone matters to her was a little much. Because in my brain I kept screaming "of course he doesn't understand it yet and how are you not getting that asta." So I agree it was flawed and could have and should have been done differently. But to claim they are making fun of ND people, to claim it's a mockery... to say we can't see representation here... thats wild to me because it very much ISNT.
And if you want, I'll give you actual examples of a tv show mocking an autistically coded character and we can compare the differences.
I'm not saying you have to agree. But here's the other side anyway. And I hope you can see now why so many of us hold on to harry so tightly and will not be letting go. If you don't like him as representation and cannot see yourself in him, that is perfectly fine.
But, I cannot begin to agree with your statement of Harry not being nuanced and boiled down to three traits only because he is INCREDIBLY nuanced (are we watching the same show?)
Alan is most likely ND himself. He is not mocking us. He's giving us windows into ourselves whenever he can.
Resident Alien is a comedy, first and foremost. They're going to utilize the "fish out of water" dynamic for comedic elements. And that's not a bad thing. Doesn't mean they're making fun of us. Doesn't mean we are being mocked. There is a difference. Comedy walks that fine line all the time. Its part of what makes it so difficult to write.
I geniunely cannot stand when allistics try to say Resident Alien is actually making fun of autistic people because they believe Harry is too childish now because I JUST-
In the beginning, Harry tried SO MUCH HARDER to fit in with the humans around him. He mimicked their speech patterns, consistently observed them, emersed himself in their activities so they wouldn't suspect he was different.
The Harry now? He doesn't care. He's loud in places he should be quiet. He talks how he wants. He laughs FREELY. He's learned large crowds of people? Not for him. He doesn't like being touched by strangers.
He's just Harry. Himself. Because he can be. Because he's realized even if some of the people of Patience find him strange, it doesn't matter. They'll never guess he's from outer space.
Have you noticed that every other alien we have seen is not like Harry? Not the greys, or the half human hybrids, not even Heather. When Heather is around humans who know she is an alien, we get to see the difference, but when she isn't? She fits in so well with any other neurotypical human.
Not Harry though. So yes, he is autistic because I said he is. Because I am autistic. And if you're allistic, you don't get to tell autistic people they shouldn't headcanon Harry as autistic (even though it is very obvious they're purposefully playing him as neurodivergent now.)
When you take an autistically coded character that a lot of autistic individuals relate to, and try to argue the character is actually a "child" and being "infantalised," you're actually being ableist.
You're saying that the traits we have resonated with are childish... Harry seems like he's "regressed" because instead of trying to adapt and pretend to be human, he is becoming something else entirely. Not human, but not fully alien either.
The body of doctor Harry Vanderspeigle was once just a disguise. Now it IS Harry's. It's his body, his own skin. And he's gotten comfortable in it and you know this because you deliberately witness times where he might be holding his hands like he would his claws (primarily when he's sleeping.) His brain doesn't realize he's not in his normal form, because in many ways, this is his new normal form.
He has emotions. He cares. He's in completely new territory and finding himself. And in doing so, that carefully crafted human mask? It's fallen a bit.
So that thing you label as "regression" is a thing I label as progress. He's learning still. Let him learn. Let him be. And give it time. And I hope to GOD Harry never becomes fully human to the point we can't recognize him. I hope he never loses his unique inflictions, or his love for pizza and pie. I hope he continues to love the quiet. I hope he ALWAYS laughs obnoxiously. I hope he always runs like he doesn't know what to do with his limbs. I hope you always see his emotions throughout his body because they simply cannot be contained. I hope he continues to jump when excited or pace when he's angry. I hope he stays obsessed with Law & Order forever.
Because if you take all that away, you're taking away the bits that make him Harry. You want a carbon copy human. I want the autistic alien struggling to understand human nature.
That being said, of course you can express your opinion him. And it can be discussed because everyone is going to have a different perspective.
But you don't get to dictate an autistic perspective if you are not autistic. Or try to cancel anyone for it either.
I love Harry. And I relate to him SO MUCH. And I love how much representation I can see him through him for me. Because I personally believe Alan and the writers have chosen to keep presenting this character as ND.
It's okay to dislike the direction of his character development. It's okay to find the flaws. It's okay to share that perspective. What's NOT okay is dictating the feelings of others because they might not agree with you.
I don't find him childish. I see him as an autistic individual trying to navigate a society that his brain hasn't been hardwired to understand.
And if you think he's too childish, please look closer at the why you think he is. Really be introspective on this one.
Because Harry is a parent. And has a child. And he has relationships. And he takes care of himself. Not only that, he is the town doctor and takes care of everyone else too. He is the smartest. He is the strongest. None of the characters have had to worry about the wellfare of Harry specifically. Its why no one realizes the greys have captured him. Because of course Harry would be fine, hes the alien expert. He knows what he's doing. So while everyone else spent so much time worrying about each other, no one was left to worry about Harry.
So ask yourself why you believe Harry has become "too childish" and if your answer comes down to any of his quirky traits or his misunderstandings of human nature, then you really need to consider if what you're actually uncomfortable with is autism/autistic traits.

Solomon x GN! reader
Warning: suggestive
Minors DNI!
Tumblr media
It's too early in the morning as you mindlessly shuffle your way to the kitchen with the smell of coffee in the air coaxing you along. Being one of two occupants in the dormitory leads you to the conclusion that Solomon's already awake.
Your foot hardly makes it past the threshold, immediately stopping as your eyes land on him -- back turned towards you, leaning over the counter rubbing his eyes with a yawn while he waits for the coffee to brew. The only thing adorning this body is a pair of boxer briefs, so that means you're getting quite the eyeful of his glorious pact marks.
What a wonderful morning already.
As quietly as you can, you sneak up behind him and wrap your arms around him. His muscles tense at the sudden touch, though he quickly relaxes when he realizes it's you.
"Good morning," he says in a deep, raspy morning voice that drives you to near insanity. You can almost hear the smile in his words, knowing it's already made his morning just by being in your arms.
You place a little kiss on his shoulder. "Good morning to you, Sol."
That's when your hands begin to wander along his torso, feeling the smooth skin beneath your own, following all the little dips and curves. You go so far as to push your hands beneath the waistline of his boxers so your palms lay flat against his hip bones. You notice Solomon's breathing growing heavier from your exploring.
He chuckles lowly, "what are you doing?"
"Mm," you hum as you continue to pepper kisses along his shoulders and up the nape of his neck, while your hands rub up and down the sides of his pelvis, "just appreciating the morning's gifts."
This makes him groan softly and his arousal to grow steadily.
"You know what you're doing. And it makes me want to do more than just appreciate you." Solomon turns to grab a hold of your hips, spinning you around until you're pushed against the counter he'd been previously leaning on.
You're stuck between two forces who do not intend to budge, a rock and a hard man...place, if you will.
His face draws in closer to yours, his breath fanning across your skin and the warmth of his lips brushing against your own. There's a fire burning in his eyes that almost feels misplaced, as if the deep blue within them could drown out anything that wasn't soft admiration for you. But it's a look you've seen before, one you'd gladly see over and over.
A sly grin tugs on your lips as you decide to push him one last time, knowing what's to come if you do.
Your hands slide up along his broad shoulders before letting your fingers travel down to the pact mark that's occupying the area of his collarbone. Then, out of nowhere, your tongue makes contact with his salty skin, tracing along the lines of the pact mark in a fluid motion. Solomon's knees nearly buckle as he shudders from your intimate touch.
"Fuck it. You're not going anywhere until I'm done with you." he growls, pinning you harder against the counter, and grabbing your face between needy hands to smash his hungry lips against yours.
Indeed. What an even better morning it's become.
