While I'm in a rental and I know it can't be guaranteed to stay, I'm going to plant Richmond Birdwing Vine (pararistolochia praevenosa), Purple Violet (viola betonicifolia), and Native Violet (viola hederacea).
They're the host plants for the Richmond Birdwing and Australian Fritillary butterflies, and I keep seeing that post about a man in America who helped out significantly I think with the California pipevine swallowtail.
There's so much I can't do to help with the environment, but planting a vine I'll need to trim in my own yard alongside a handful of other native plants and having a bit of a veggie garden helps myself, my family, and some animals in the area.

a large amount of time I've been spending on -untitled undefined scope original fiction project- since the last time I posted about it has been trying to develop the protagonist concept I came up with last summer or whatever into like, a character that would feel real and era appropriate.
it's fun research to do. naturally a lot of the details I assigned to her are things that I already think are cool, so it's been a lot of fun trying to trace her traits back through the relatively recent past, getting reminded of how much things have changed, or where the gaps in my intuition are, and then doing a flurry of reading to get a sense for exactly how someone like her and the people around her could have happened and what her life was probably like leading up to her present day. hopefully this results in some good good verisimilitude.
#I wrote a short story from her perspective over the holidays and then didn't know how to continue it#and then I got distracted by real life stuff for a few months#I forget if I posted about that#and then I've been picking through archive dot org for the last few weeks looking at this stuff#the last big rabbit hole was trying to get a better feel for era appropriate ts/tv subculture#the current one I'm looking at is how she would've gotten into language learning and how that would've worked#nettle has been prodding me about the setting thing lately so I've been thinking about that more too#probably the biggest hurdle by far is figuring out how I want to play that#and how I want the thing to be divided up#since the original coc scenario I'm developing this out of is centered on a flight from LA to honolulu#and the airport dungeon was definitely meant to be a hook for a larger campaign#some amount of it is going to cover protag lady's failed life in LA and some of it is going to be worse things happening in hawaii#but it's like. how much do I want to balance it one way or the other#and realistically how much does the aesthetics of 20th century air travel add to the story#besides me personally thinking it's compelling ofc#a lot of what I find compelling about hawaii is that it's an east/west cultural crossroads and realistically that's also true of socal#and I can wax poetic about socal as much as I want without worrying all that much about mishandling something#and there's also a lot of socal specific history along similar parallels to pull from that I'm more familiar with#I guess it comes down to whether curiosity re: 'doing it right' is enough of a motivator to do the increased amount of research#which I guess it has so far with the above character details. so hopefully that will continue#but it also feels like using machine translation a bit yknow. it's hard to know how effectively I'll be able to sanity check#although depending on where this goes I might be able to get other people involved to sensitivity read down the line#with most of the creative things I do I just have a tendency to always rely really heavily on figuring things out myself#I also want protag lady to have a Cool Car and idk how to get that from point a to point b narratively#this is like an entire second or third post's worth of tags but I don't feel like unfucking this so whatever. suffer. I guess.

wouldn't it be nice if the author of the fics finished them. the author is me.
#vent#for the last 4 months my life has been in stupid crisis mode#like constantly#from major ones where i had to move out for a while because it was impossible to stay where i lived#to not being able to use my kitchen for over a week#and like other more or less minor house related stuff that made it impossible for me to use something normally#not a single week without something like that or shit at work which is constantly being so fucking chaotic#and now someone died in my family#not someone very close but i liked them#and of course like feeling sad that they are gone can't be the only thing#because it has to come with the headache of i need to travel for their funeral and it's just before easter#so there's no one in this city to leave my dog with#because most of my friends either live abroad or have cats or are busy before easter..#i'd just want a week where nothing happens#and like the writing is weighing heavy on me#because i miss it#also i wish i could finish something#i wish something good would happen that i could feel proud off#also because i'm mentally ill and fucking stupid when i was going crazy with my kitchen not working and work shit#i bought new furniture#because after 15 years i've finally had enough money to buy some that aren't fucking black and inconvenient and ugly#which is like a huge project and a crisis i brought onto myself#just because i was too burnt out to write#and i wanted something nice to happen to me#like a nice living space that doesn't make feel like i have no ownership over it because everything in it was some else's choice#and that old furniture was bought by my mother and my brother ages ago and it's handmedowns#and my fucking horrible mother feels personally slighted that i want to get rid of a bed that is broken#because my brother's kids jumped on it regularly when they used to visit pre covid#yeah it's been broken that long because i lost all my savings during covid and had to change careers to a souless pointless corpo job#long pathetic whine and overshare over

Sometimes all you need is a good ol' coffee shop au tbh.
#i'm cold and in a mood to be fluffed 🥺 and angsted#the one good thing about holiday season is the amount of coffee shops/ bakery/ otherwise fluff and angst fanfics#it's like hallmark movies but 10000x better and they actually get to fuck and curse and act like real people#my bts ffic archive is like 50% exclusively holiday-themed fics lmao. they are cosy! and sexy !#like yeah give me grumpy yoongi in the midst of snow and baking cookies 🥺#if there's a little exes to lovers thrown in??? or enemies to lovers?? WOOOOOOOOOO YEAH#you can take my X Reader fanfiction out of my cold dead hands. leave yeen alone 😤#(yeen is y/n)#anyways. i am in fact not reading anything rn as it's very late and i'm STILL sick and can't sleep but also reading rn is no bueno#but i am making a list of the things i need to catch up on + want to indulge in#since i'm travelling next week and will finally have time to read#wanna catch up with at least ditf and edging fitness before i see sleep token. because after that i will have NO TIME in december#and i prefer to re-read my fav cosy stuff to shake off the Holiday Big Sad#which actually isn't too bad this year but maybe because i've been BIG SAD for a few months now and i can't even tell the difference anymore#ahem. ANYWAYS! let's not go into that#hmmmmmmmm i know i'm using this as a diary at this point but! if anyone's actually nosy enough to have read through all this#here's a little surprise: ✨🎁✨#🦦🥏🦫 <- an otter and a beaver playing frisbee 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹#darya talks to herself

I see some people disliking the ending with the time stuff due to it going against season ones message. While i understand, i think i need to see how the time stuff actually plays out next season… Or maybe i just think there’s ahem worse writing choices this season
yeah i mean that's valid! people already didn't like season 2 because of how different it was from season 1.
but like...unpopular opinion, but season 1 was no masterpiece lol. it was cute, i guess, but i've definitely seen this kind of thing done better before (these slice of life, individual stories). what i really enjoyed about the series was lg and cxs and their relationship; and i came to really love ql too, and how she was like a big sister to cxs.
but (and this is ALSO unpopular) I really enjoyed the thread about emma back in s1, and the more exciting mystery/thriller stuff. i found that fun and exciting. so when s2 was more of THAT i was excited. i agree with everyone else that it was executed poorly and the writing was sloopy; but imo it's no downgrade from s1 or anything. kind of just more of the same? i was just bummed there was less of a focus on my two favorite characters.
BUT THEN THEY CONFIRMED A FAN-FAVORITE THEORY AND MADE THE FOCUS LG AND CXS AGAIN SO I DON'T GIVE A SHIT LC IS THE BEST SHOW OF ALL TIME 10/10 NO COMPLAINTS

Cub's bare feet slipped in the hot sand, sinking in as the dune fought against his ascent. The sun was hot, too hot, compounding the effort needed to keep moving. He'd forgotten how hard it was traversing the desert, but something was compelling him to keep going.
He covered his eyes as he got to the top of the dune, the sun in just the right spot to feel almost blinding. The sand slipped around his feet again, and this time, he lost his footing, sliding down the other side of the dune.
When he came to a stop, half-buried in sand, that's when he saw it. The pyramid. His pyramid. Right. Of course. That made sense. He hadn't known that was his destination, as all he'd seen for so long was sand and dunes and sun burning down on him, but of course. Of course. Of course.
Cub got to his feet and brushed the sand off him. The pyramid had been plagueing his dreams lately. His hands itching to build another one. Smelling soft frankincense on the breeze. Seeing Ra's temple again. Feeling that old, old magic flowing up through the souls of his feet and into his hands. It felt so different to Vex magic. Hot, fluid, sharp, like Blazes, really.
So no, it wasn't surprising to be back here again. He idly wondered why as he made his way to the entrance, letting the towers slowly come into view. It really was a magnificent pyramid. He hadn't been back here since season 7 ended.
The big door was already open, as it turned out. He was sure he hadn't left it like that. Still, he stood in the entrance, gazing in at the pyramid. It all looked the same. Not that he expected it would have changed by now, but, well. Anything could happen, really.
He smelled frankincense in the air as he walked inside, taking refuge from the hot sun outside. His body sighed with relief and he spent a moment washing the sand off his feet in the cool water before proceeding further.
He'd forgotten how small he felt gazing up at the top of the pyramid from the middle of the storage room. The terracotta felt cool under his feet, though, smooth and cool. A blessed change from the hot, rough sand. As he stood there, something caught his attention over by one of the honeyvators. Something moving.
"Hey! Who's there?" Cub called as he saw a shadow sink into the wall. There was no reply. Frankincense drifted in the air around him. "Oh, I see how it is. Gods, hey? Alright."
Instinct told him to go check on the tomb. Just to make sure the Pharaoh was still at rest.
-
The tunnel to the Pharaoh's tomb was still well-hidden. There was a little more sand and rubble though, causing him to move material out of the way in order to get past. He'd done very well in making it a difficult path to take, which he hoped would protect the Pharaoh's resting place from being disturbed.
Eventually, he found the crawl space, and made his way towards the tomb. He could hear the guard patrolling, its armour clanking as it moved. It was the only sound it made, as it didn't breath or speak otherwise.
Cub paused at the only way in to the tomb. The guard would definitely come for him if he got in. That was its entire purpose. And it had definitely killed him at least twice in the process of getting it in there, and he'd kitted it out in the best gear and weapons he had.
Of course, he didn't want to kill the guard either. That would defeat the purpose of having them there. But perhaps he could...
An invisibility spell presented itself. Risky, because there was no guarantee it would work. But curiosity got the better of him, and he felt it was worth a try. Vex magic pooled in his fingers as he began tracing the runes in the air as he spoke.
"Blind the guard, they will not see, sneaking around, the likes of-"
Cub didn't get to finish as a large, rough hand gripped his own tightly, stopping him from tracing the last glyph. He was roughly dragged into the tomb - he presumed, as he could still hear the guard - as he was blinded himself.
"Hey! I wasn't going to-"
Something heavy hit the back of his head. He remembered nothing more.
-
His head was pounding as he became aware of lying on cold ground. His body ached. He breathed slowly, eyes unwilling to open. Seemed odd for the gods to treat him like this. After all, he'd built this pyramid at their behest.
"That'll teach you to grave rob."
Cub sighed. He knew that voice. It was his voice. The Pharaoh's voice. Right. So that's what this was about.
"I just wanted to make sure no one had disturbed the tomb, that's all," Cub said. He blinked, forcing his eyes open as he started to sit up. The garish colours of glazed terracotta greeted him, and confused him. "Where is this? I'm not in the-"
Cub sat up. Ah. The statue room. And there in front of him, sitting on a very grand throne made of gold, lapis, and emerald, was the Pharaoh. Old, of course, and looking just like he had before he'd moved on to season eight. But very recognisable. And carrying himself with as much power and authority as he should do.
"I'm assuming there's a reason I'm here," Cub said.
"Of course. You're going to build me a TCG arena in the form of a pyramid. I've done my rest. It's time to play. And it's time to win. I'll be the unstoppable force they will never be able to beat," the Pharaoh said.
"I mean, sure, I can do that. I-I'm not sure how you'll be able to play them though?" Cub said.
The Pharaoh stood and walked down to where Cub was. He'd sort of understood that the Pharaoh had become a separate soul, a separate part of himself. An emanation of the Kingly Ka that had made him a god. But addressing him like this still felt very weird, especially when the Pharaoh reached down and touched his chin, lifting Cub's face up to look at him.
"A vessel doesn't question what it'll be filled with," the Pharaoh said.
Cub frowned. Confused. Thought he understood that, then realised he really didn't. Thought about pondering soul stuff, decided he already had a headache and didn't need another.
At the back of his head, he heard Vex cooing. Fierce hot energy flooded all around him. The Pharaoh gripped his head with his other hand. Spells being recited were the last thing Cub was conscious of.
-
The Pharaoh stood outside the pyramid, the big piston door closing behind him. Cub could feel the King's power flooding through him once more. He'd forgotten how hot it was, how it made his skin glow. It felt so different to Vex magic.
He walked out to the sand and started tracing glyphs on the ground, summoning the portal he needed to leave this place. Cub would ordinarily have used Vex magic for this, but the Pharaoh's magic would work just as well.
He could feel Thoth's energy as Lord of Time filling his hands, powering the words he was speaking as the glyphs glowed and came to life. Protective serpents circled around him, and as he stepped into the portal, golden light surrounded him, and he returned home to Scar's tree.

((The strong association between Flynn and eyes---from the iconography on his clothes and the planchettes he carves, certain veves, the extreme focus on his gaze when Kariom takes the photo of him and Bo during Tigla-Dera (which Kariom even comments on when you examine his half of the photo later), the emphasis on his right eye when stabbing Kariom and the equal emphasis in this promo image (it's obviously impossible to miss the photo being centered over the right eye and only the right eye, plus the knife makes it a damn good closed circle), the fact that out of every single character Flynn has some of the most noticable (if not the most) eye changes/shifts when speaking to him and how it's a clear focal point for his sprites, the slight discrepancy re; the color of his eyes in general, etc---really hits hard when you realize that he's possessed by an eyeless creature that covets eyes and those are what it possesses, accepts in trade, and so on.))
