Chapter 7: A Lily in Bloom

True to her word, Lily sends an invitation over to Hopwich House the next day, and Miss Fawley visits Stinchcombe an additional two times over the course of the next week. The first visit is tea in the breakfast room, with sunlight filtering in through the light curtains, the garden visible as they make polite, if slightly awkward conversation. The second starts the same way, until Miss Fawley sets her cup down and fixes Lily with a direct stare. “If you call me Miss Fawley one more time, I confess I might scream from the proper etiquette of it all. Please call me Samantha, and I will call you Lily, and we can be done with this formality and become the closest of friends.” She tilts her head to the side expectantly with a hopeful smile, and Lily feels excitement bubble within as she herself lets out a small laugh and nods in agreement. “I suppose it’s rather hard to say no to that. It’s agreed.” “Wonderful,” Samantha beams, and her dark brown eyes sparkle with delight. “And now, other than enjoy tea in this lovely part of the house, how else do you spend your days at Stinchcombe?”

Chapter 6: High Spirits and Hope

The sun is just peeking over the horizon, the world just coming to life when Lily and James find each other in the garden. She’s sitting on his mother’s favorite bench with her dressing gown pulled tight around her nightdress, trying to quiet a restless mind when she hears his footsteps approach and stop suddenly. “Oh—good morning.” She turns her head to look at him: he’s dressed for the day, minus a waistcoat, and appears surprised to find her out on the grounds this morning. Lily feels a surge of something—anger, sorrow, shame—in her chest and looks away before replying. “Good morning.” “Are you—is everything alright?” Fighting a humorless laugh that begs to be set free, Lily simply nods and looks down at her hands. “Yes, just up early. I thought I’d find some peace out here before my sister wakes.” Simply invoking the reminder of their guests’ presence douses the already strangled connection between the two of them in ice. James’ back becomes rigid, his chin tilting up ever-so-slightly, nostrils flaring for a brief moment. Lily’s stomach turns. “I see.” When he speaks, his voice is steady and he looks over towards the house. “I’m afraid I have to take care of something over at Sirius’ and might be there for a large part of the day.” Quietly, she nods, and the backs of her eyes begin to sting.

this is one of ferrari's main issues i fear is when u have a risk-averse corporate board that wants the last say in all decisions. idk the fact that je is sooooooooo supportive of lewis already in a way he's never publicly been to charles makes me think that the seeds have already been planted. but he also just shelled out a fuck ton of money for lewis as an investment so if lewis doesn't preform im sure je will backtrack quickly/lose power within the ferrari corp dynamics bc that's how these things go.
