Pairing - Reader x ot13 (Yes, you read that right, I am insane and you are allowed to scream at me)

Genre - Greek Demigod AU! We’ve mainly got crack cause all of them are idiots, and obviously smut because they are thirteen lonely, horny men afterall (aka reverse harem) also throwing in some fluff and angst as well because I gotta let emotions run high for plot sake :)

A/n - Hello hello, this is a new seventeen series I am starting and boy oh boy is it gonna be a wild ride! “Over here!”

Wincing, you looked up from the disgusting heap of mud your foot had neatly landed in, ignoring the way your little piglet was ecstatically rolling in the same filth.

The man before you looked equally disturbed as he walked over, pulling out a bottle of water apparently from up his ass because you didn’t remember him holding it a second ago.

Sighing a thank you, you took it, emptying it onto your boots before grabbing your gremlin of a pet from its happy place, resulting in a series of loud, incessant whining.

In all that noise, you heard your shoe savior take your name with a voice that was as pretty as him.

“I’m Jisoo.” He put out his hand. “You can call me Joshua.”

You nodded, unable to shake his hand thanks to the problem trashing in your arms earning Joshua’s amusement.

“And who is this?”

“Natalie.” You muttered as he raised an unimpressed eyebrow. “Natalie Porkman.”

Joshua burst out laughing, looking away as he covered up a snort, shoulders shaking. You smiled, truly taking in his beautiful features for the first time. Cute.

“This way.” He pointed at absolutely nothing yet you followed this complete stranger, survival skills be damned. “We’ve got a half mile trek ahead of us but it gets a little confusing from here so I thought I’d come pick you up.”

Cute and kind.

You filed it away under ‘to-learn-more-about-when-I-fiigure-out-what-the-fuck-is-going-on-in-my-life.’

The two of you walked side by side, footfall softly echoing in the lush green forest around. Though silence was all you had been craving after the last few days you’ve had, that did not seem like an option since one, Natalie hadn’t stopped whimpering in fifteen minutes and two, Joshua kept glancing at you like you were some sort of ancient artifact.

Not the good kinds.

“What is it?” You said finally, starting a conversation you didn’t want to have. “Never seen a mess of a human before?”

“Never such an old one.” Well, at least you got ancient right. Joshua quickly corrected himself. “I mean I’ve never heard of a demigod surviving undetected in the mortal world for this long.”

Oh but you got ‘human’ wrong. You forgot. Normalcy was never your defining factor but at least now you knew exactly what kind of freak you were.

Almost.

“I wouldn’t call it surviving, more like ‘barely made it’.”

“But you made it.”

“At the cost of what?” You sighed. “Everything is much more complicated now.”

“Don’t worry.” He stopped at a large boulder at the base of an abnormally large tree in the middle of seemingly nowhere. “We’ll all help you.”

“All?”

He nodded, looking at you over his shoulder. “All.”

Your eyes followed his hand as he placed it in the middle of the rock, and after all that you’ve learnt in the last few days, you’re not sure why you were so shocked when it rolled away at his touch. You expected it to lead you to a dark, suspicious cave but a bright light poured out, making you momentarily lose both your vision and your pet who jumped out of your arms and ran into the illuminance, squealing in delight.

“Welcome to Camp Seventeen.”

Joshua grinned, pointing at the scene before him and your jaw dropped in awe.

It was a large opening in the middle of a forest that looked very different from the one you were just trudging through. There were hills on one side, a large lake shimmering far away, fire torches lit everywhere, little cottages scattered here and there, strange symbols topping them all off. Looking at everything curiously, you walked down the cobbled path, only just noticing the two men who were standing at the end of it, both incredibly beautiful. The blonde one was playing with Natalie and the redhead was staring at you with his arms crossed, expression smug.

“Would you look at that, the prodigal babygirl is here at last.”

You frowned, taking an almost immediate dislike despite his pretty, pretty face.

“Jeonghan, play nice.” Joshua muttered, walking over to him.

“Don't patronise me Aphrodite's son, she was supposed to be here at 4-”

“It’s 4:10.”

“-yesterday.” He turned back to you. “You’re a day and 10 minutes late.”

“Well you’re not the one who’s relocating your whole life.” You spat back at him. “I had things to take care of - my dorms, my bills-”

“So much that you missed the meeting with your lawyer.”

“I did ask to reschedule. It’s not my fault he’s an unsympathetic prick.”

“Careful sweetheart.” Jeonghan cocked his head at you. “I’m unforgiving too.”

You stared at him for a whole maddening minute, realizing why his voice seemed so familiar. You had heard him on the phone over the last few days.

“You’re my lawyer.”

“And the best in the city.” Joshua interjected, sensing the rising tension. “Children of Athena tend to be big brained.”

“And hot headed apparently.”

“Natalie says ‘not more than you’.”

All three of you turned to the only other presence there, the man who was carrying your pig, silent as a statue all this while.

“Jun, son of demeter.” Joshua introduced, pulling him ahead. “He’s a natural with anything, well... natural? Mostly plants but he also happens to talk to animals.”

“Domestic ones.” Jun mumbled. “Hansol is better with the wild.”

You greeted him awkwardly, half smiling to be polite and half frowning at the way Natalie was looking up at him with literal heart eyes.

“How did you come across a fledgling?”

“A what now?”

Jun picked your pig up by the arms like a little baby. “She says she’s 10 years old, yet is the size of a toddler. Have you never wondered why your pig never grew?”

“I uh….assumed it was just the kind of breed that didn’t?”

“What an intellectual.” Jeonghan looked at you with faux amazement making you roll your eyes.

Jun, however, still hadn’t met your eye. “Fledglings are creatures of Olympus. Time moves differently there so they don’t really grow like the others in the human world. In that sense, technically, she’s still only a few months old-”

“So you’re telling me this thing, which has lived with me for 10 odd years, is….magical?”

Jun shook his head as Joshua spoke up, clarifying.

“Not magical, that’s a whole different branch of powers and abilities. Your pig is just….not a part of the human world.”

“You betrayer.” You narrowed your eyes at what you thought was your loyal companion. “We were friends. How could I not know?”

Natalie whined sadly in response earning a smile from Jun and of course, yet another snarky comment from Jeonghan. “I don’t speak pig and even I know she said you’re not very bright.”

“Understanding your native language is not particularly intelligent, you swine.” You glared at him, receiving a smirk in response.

“Ten minutes in camp and you’ve already made Jun’s ears red and picked a fight with Han.” You turned to see three men walk up to you, the one in the middle with an amused look and a powerful aura. “You’re gonna fit in quite well Newbie.”

“Seungcheol, son of Zeus and leader of the camp.” Joshua whispered as everyone bowed to him. You imitated them quickly.

“This is Seokmin, Son of Poseidon and Minghao, Son of Ares.” Seungcheol added, pulling out his armor as one of them shot you a cheery smile and the other continued to look at you cynically. “They are our training specialists. Seokmin should help you with your overall fitness and Minghao will train you for combat.”

“C-combat?” You stuttered looking around. “You mean like war?”

“The world of demigods is new to you, don’t try to understand everything in one day.” The Son of Ares sheathed his twin blades behind his back. “Take a few days to adjust to the camp first. You can start training next week.”

You nodded, a little thankful that despite his cold exterior, he seemed to be surprisingly sympathetic of your situation.

“He’s right.” Seokmin chimed. “You should settle here first, not to forget, deal with that lawsuit before you focus on everything else.”

You turned to Jeonghan expecting yet another snarky remark but he looked worried, lost in thought.

When you turned back to Seokmin though, you bit back a scream, your face inches away from a man who appeared soundlessly and seemingly from thin air.

He gave you a cheeky grin with a tilt of the head, “I’m Chan aka Dino, Son of Hermes, Camp cutie, camp hottie and camp leader- ow!”

He rubbed the back of his head vigorously when a small rock hit him with a dull thud. You looked over his shoulder to see Seungcheol aim another one with just a flick of the wrist.

This one Dino skillfully dodged, stepping away from you as Joshua laughed, “Chan is the camp messenger. He’s in charge of all sorts of delivery and transportation.”

“You were the one who picked up my things.” The realisation hit you at last as Dino nodded, pointing at a pile of your stacked bags and trunks beside the entrance.

“Guilty as charged.”

“You were supposed to arrive over an hour ago.” Seokmin narrowed his eyes at the younger man.

“I got held up with some uh distractions.” Chan laughed nervously, scratching the back of his ear. “I didn’t know where to keep her things though, considering you know, she doesn’t have a place yet.”

Seungcheol turned to you to clear your confusion. “Everyone on camp has their own residence but you came on too short a notice so we’re yet to build one of you. We could have housed you in the guest cabin except it was recently damaged in a fight,” He glared at all the boys around him. “So that would not be feasible. Until your own place is not ready you can stay at mine - it is the biggest so you should be comfortable.”

You pursed your lips unsure about his offer. Did you think you would be unsafe in his presence? No absolutely not, the opposite in fact.

You wondered how long you could hold yourself back before unsuspectingly jumping this man and his huge biceps and beefy thighs and manly voice-

Taken aback you looked around, searching for the owner of the voice who unnecessarily accurately voiced your thoughts. Instead, you heard the snap of a twig and a low growling sound from the area the forest got more dense. You narrowed your eyes, trying to peer through the overgrown wilderness only to meet a pair of menacing red orbs.

Your adrenaline response barely had the time to kick in before ten, no fifteen, wild hounds ran out of their hiding place towards you, making you scream and hide behind Joshua.

The boys laughed as the dogs circled around you and you gripped onto Joshua’s shoulders terrified.

“Stand back lads.” A silver haired man walked over with a golden haired one beside him, both with a bow and quiver strung over their shoulders. The dogs immediately ran over, aligning themselves in an obedient, straight line behind them.

“Hansol, Son of Artemis and Jihoon, Son of Apollo.” Joshua looked at you over his shoulder. “They are in charge of daytime border patrol. There are all sorts of wild animals out here, hence the hounds, for protection.” As you shuddered, Joshua looked around curiously. “The Son of Hades, is in charge of nighttime patrol. He should be somewhere around here…”

Your eyes widened as the water canteen hanging on Jihoon’s belt flew towards you on its own, making you almost claw Joshua’s arm.

“Wonwoo don’t scare her.” Joshua chastised laughing as you literally see a tall, lean man materialize out of thin air, the canteen in his hand and a smirk on his face. “How long have you been here?”

“The whole time.” He mumbled, handing you the water. “Jihoon said you were thirsty.”

“Not for water.” The blonde man whispered in a way only you could hear, looking entertained at how flushed you were. Did he actually read your mind?

Coming out of Joshua’s shadow, you grabbed the canteen before anyone else noticed, thanking Wonwoo with a hard smile. Tilting your head back you drank up, not noticing how all 10 eyes were intently fixed on you and your throat moving with each gulp. They all took a gulp of their own.

As you wiped your mouth with the back of your hand, slowly looking around and noticing everyone’s gaze, the ground below began to shake, fazing no one but you.

Jeonghan pulled you out of the way of what seemed like a large mechanical bull charging towards you with an equally large man perched on top of it. A smaller man arrived right behind, riding a….. A leopard???

“You said you would win.” The muscled man slid off the mechanical creature, patting it. “My baby is faster.”

“I said a cheetah would win. My baby is a tiger.”

“It's a leopard.” You corrected, earning everyone's snickers and the not so threatening stare of its owner.

“It’s a big cat with an identity crisis.” Taking your hand in his, placing a soft kiss at the back of it, the muscle man gave you a fanged smile. “I’m Mingyu, Son of Hephaestus.”

The other man raised his hand. “Soonyoung, Son of Dionysis and that-” He turned to yet another one who was running over, looking frazzled.

“Seungkwan, Son of Hera, owner of a peacock that has yet again disappeared.” He bent over, grabbing his waist, panting and out of breath. “I don’t get why she keeps running away.”

“Maybe because you keep calling him a she.” Minghao nonchalantly glanced at his neatly filed nails.

“I can’t-” Seungkwan ran his fingers through his head, annoyed. “It’s confusing okay, who the fuck named him Patricia then?”

Behind you Jeonghan giggled.

“You coagulation of human evil,” Seungkwan threw his shoe, missing the target. “Now she- He won’t respond to any other name!”

The boys roared with laughter as Seungkwan unsuccessfully chased Jeonghan around, hands flailing everywhere.

Seungcheol walked over to you amidst all the mess, shooting you an understanding smile. “Your life has just undergone a major change, I get that it is intimidating but don’t worry. All thirteen of us are here to help you get through this.”

You nodded slowly, looking around at the boys, doing a quick, confirmatory headcount. “So there’s only thirteen of you?”

And why were all of them so gorgeous??

“Yeah, only.” Seungcheol chuckled, “Trust me thirteen is more than enough, I’ve got to run a very tight ship here.”

“I just assumed there would be seventeen people since, you know, Camp Seventeen.”

“The Oracle apparently told Woozi to name us Camp Seventeen.” He shrugged. “Not sure why.”

You hummed, as all of them gradually stopped behaving like toddlers and turned their attention to you.

“Wait,” The realization slowly dawned upon you. Actually, it hit you like a brick. “You’re all men.”

Seungcheol nodded carefully, like he didn’t know where you were going with this.

“Am I….Am I the only girl in the camp?”

Soft mutters went around as Seungcheol cleared his throat. “Yes and I’m sorry if that makes you uncomfortable but unfortunately, it was not a choice.”

“It’s not common for a girl to be assigned to an all boys camp,” Joshua stepped up. “But I believe since Jeonghan and Wonwoo are working on the lawsuit that landed you here, the authorities of Olympus must have thought it is better for you to be here.”

“But it’s not permanent.” Seungcheol added. “You can choose to change camps after Quest Season if you wish-”

“What is Quest season?”

Jeonghan let out a loud sigh. “You’ve been here for what, ten minutes? Don't overwork your brain. The world of demigods is complex, you’ll learn everything with time.”

“He’s right.” Seokmin leaned against the tree near him. “Why don’t we first move your things to Seungcheol’s cabin? We’ll let you get settled, then Joshua can show you around camp, walk you through the rules and assign a duty-”

“Except.” Soonyoung looked at you from bottom to top, like he was assessing you. “What kind of duty?”

“Exactly.” Mingyu threw his arm around his friend, his expression matching. “Daughter of Hestia, Goddess of Hearth and Home, what would you be good for in this camp?”

Minghao hummed, walking up to you, bending to meet your eyelevel. “Well, what can a woman be good for in a camp of thirteen men?”

huuuge news about my hair !!

buying better and professional products really change your hair fully, now i wanna focus on my hair growth. since i am in my last bottle of hair tonic i was thinking in doing that rosemary oil scalp treatment for it because I've seen so many people talking about it and my hair loooove oils, and also having better nutrition as well wich i think its the most difficult to do for me because... $$$ lol but my hydration is good hehe drinking like 2 bottles of my 1L water bottle per day yay

my hair finally stopped falling excessoverly !!! and its funny because I'm going to places and studying all day so i can't wash my hair everyday then boom! my hair starts being normal and keeps really good even after 3 days without washing it, i be refreshing my curls in the next morning and omg I'm so happy I can deal with it, i really thought it would be messed up or i couldn't make it pretty everyday but my frizz is sooo controled even in the cold windy days 🙏🙏🙏

at the end of january i bought some new hair products and spent 195$ !!! and it was only a new combo, leave-in and hair oil.. but really, at least it was the best shampoo i ever used in my life but literally never doing this mistake again lmao, only when i get a job now because that hurt so much lolol. the products that i bought in november last year is not even close to end, but i will have to buy new shampoo and a hair oil. I've been thinking deep about using solid shampoo more, I've useed once and i liked it ! it lasted soo long, i think it lasted 4 to almost 5 months, the liquid shampoo that i bought is already finishing hahaha

so yeah, really happy with my results! i did a good job in it 🩷

3 hrs spent total for sketching - and skipping my pizza time for this xD

I'm VERY happy to say, that I had a lot of fun trying to come up with some alt-designs!!!

I got the idea to draw these doodles from a blog I really like, from @shoechoe !! (sorry if you hate tags, just wanted to credit back to you and also reblog the source of inspo!!!)

I've never drawn Doppio NOR Diavolo ever before, plus I mainly draw anthros in my free time, so I put some extra effort into these in trying to make these look appealing despite my obvious time-crunch LOL!

Since unfortunately I have to go to work in order to feed myself LOL, that means I couldn't of spend the rest of my midnight on this, so this looks REALLY rough and ofc some anatomy-mistakes were ignored, but yeah! For 3 hrs, I'm p OK w/ the results!!! :o;

Hope any fans out there enjoy my weird ideas I had design-wise. xD

Diavolo was giving very oldhead punk - maybe even the gatekeepy types KLFGSDLKGDS, but I also thought about "OOH he'd probably LOVE glam-punk. Somewhere around his era too w/ 80s-90s dude probably musta LOVED David Bowie!!" So I've drawn one with glam-punk influences, the other just freely off the top of my head, on what I consider something more punk-ish xD

Oh, also I sliiightly dulled the colours,, just sliightly. If the colours look off in some way, blame my program, that prevents me from getting migraines due to bluelight. I have a filter, that sets my screen to a certain % of orange, so if colours look colder than they're supposed to...It was bc of that. xD It's 3AM here in Germany, as I write this!! :>

That was my main thought-process,,, then last second I thought "omg I also need to throw Doppio in here bc I love him too who WOULDN'T" - soO here we have emo-Doppio!! or...Emoppio I guess. xD You think his band-kid energy would've been SO off the charts, that Abbacchio could've gotten to him first instead of the other way around? ;T /hj

Honestly tho...I think bandkid Doppio and Risotto could've gotten along better than what we got. xD I can dream I guess. 😌

(JIC that joke about Korn is very specific, I know that Korn is more nu-metal and stuff pls don't behead me fellow Korn fans for a joke, Diavolo fans pls don't behead me for making a joke about KC's genera intelligence to know what music-genres are, my acoustic arse wants to make sure, to clarify it in case someone might think I wrote that down in a serious manner, I am just a court-jester throwinf tomatoes at the king basically CKSKDJ)

omg i can't believe it's been 3 days already?? i really really loved this challenge and i'll be using it from now on! okay let's get to the results now!

okk so when i started this challenge, my skin was def going through it bcz of my period. but like on the second day my skin cleared up, and was literally SOO GLOWY. i was literally shining. and now especially the scars on my chin look blurred + most of them are gone!

>weight loss

so i did not exactly lose 3 kgs as i wanted to, but i definitely looked very thin. like my upper body and hips look so much slimmer and i'm happyyy

>money

i went to work on friday, and i got an extra 300₺ tip so yeah! money is lowkey easy to manifest for me lmao.

>self concept

omg im so happy ab this one. i was lowkey worried ab my self concept bcz a couple years ago i literally HATED myself, so i was worried ab having some negative thoughts in my head still. but today, the last day of the challenge, i met with some friends and as we were talking and i realised that my self concept is literally ON FIREE. at some point i was constantly complimenting myself and talking about my success (not in an annoying way ofc) and everyone was like "duh, we already know." anddd i'm like yeah, everyone is me pushed out!

i did like 10+ readings and i had never done it on the app i work on before! i made extra money from that hehe.

>getting my tiktok acc back

ok. so this is the only one that hasnt been manifested YET, i mean it did manifest, it is done, just not reflected to the 3d yet, so i'll be patient and i'll keep positive cause I KNOW i'm getting it back!

what i did

> basically the first day i was constantly affirming. i made a list you can see on the original challenge post and i constantly repeated that list. especially at night, before bed and in the morning sometimes. sometimes i just read like a robot without thinking, sometimes i didn't feel them "real", sometimes i did not feel like affirming so i just thought positive thoughts. also self concept affirmations are your best friend! especially affirmations that talk about how powerful of a manifestor you are! another thing i did is mirror work. i literally rampaged looking at the mirror. also said affirmations out loud, like talking to someone, while doing chores. anddd another thing is, DON'T TALK ABOUT YOUR HOW YOUR DESIRES HAVEN'T MANIFESTED YET. instead, think as if your desire is already done, so just say to yourself "why would i complain? i already have it." that's it! ofc u dont need to do all i did, do what u like best!

my opinions

i love love LOVE the 3 days rule. all my desires manifest in 3 days. it's powerful. as time goes, i'll change it to instantly! but i realised that saying "roe" at the beginning of each affirmation is lowkey tiring- so i rather saying "no matter what" or smth shorter. but i'm def gonna keep using the 3 day rule!

IT WENT SO WELL!!

IM SOO HAPPYY i literally left her room SCREAMING to my friend and there was like a rlly quiet classroom with their door open so that was rlly embarrassing she probably heard it 😭 BUT OK ILL GET INTO IT

SO I FINALLY MANAGED TO SAY GOODBYE TO HER... we settled a time right in the morning through emails then i was so fucking nervous all day because i was scared it'd be really underwhelming as i'm used to it being , and i've been in a really pessimistic mood for the past few days but it went so, so well!

we hugged (OMG she even asked me if i wanted to and in my head i was like: um, yess????), she asked for my personal email, we gushed about music to each other one last time. it was so heartwarming. she even said she listened to mitski a little which made me so happy bcz im a massive mitski fan, then we gatekept kate bush from new stranger things fans together (/hj). when i gave her the gifts she said she didnt think she did enough to deserve it and it was too much, though i insisted she did. 😭😭 im scared for how she'll take my letter to her but i'm excited too. she also said that she was like really 'bad' in school she failed a lot of her exams and threw smth at her teacher and that she even got accused of slashing a teacher's tires bcz she had such a bad reputation, which is so funny to me because i cannot imagine that with her at all! it gives me some hope too she reassured me that these results aren't everything which i hear a lot but coming from her it did genuinely comfort me a lot.

i will miss her a lot, i get to still see her at prom and i'm looking forward to that. i assume she will email me too but it just won't be the same, i'm just glad we sort of parted happily though i could not have wished for anything more.

I have moderate acne i also had slightly severe acne before, and i feel sooo insecure abt my looks, like hiding your face most of the time, wearing mask even if it suffocates,

And the only thing i could think of is how i look when someone looks at my face.

My cousin who used to be my bestf before, she said things which made me extremely insecure abt my skin, even my so called bestfriend in school, when her crush got attracted to me without actually seeing me, she said to him "she wont come, her face is full of acne" when he asked if he could meet me, and when he said that they weren't visible in the picture, she literally said "its all filters, filters hides everything", AND THAT PIC HAD NO FILTER, I've been hiding myself, i hate going out, avoiding whtvr makes me go out, i shifted to some new place and ppl here asked me to come play with them and i refused.

Every new breakout and i feel like dying, I've bawled my eyes out literally everyday, and telling my bf abt how bad i feel and him saying that im pretty and all just doesn't work at all

But NGL ISTG ASTROLOGY MADE ME FEEL SO MUCH BETTER not only astrology, few influencers on instagram who posts abt acne positivity, seeing them going thru same shit feels so much better likw its fucking normal,

And in astrology, my Chiron in 1h which ig means appearance? And self esteem and wtvr, i read somewhere that "things will only heal when you'll accept urself" and man, healing really is a long and hard process but actually doing it and seeing results feels so much better

I'm trying to not to wear mask, and few of my friends are soo nice to me, so supportive, she got soo happy and excited that i wasn't wearing the mask, and my friend who stays with me most of the time in school they didn't even react a bit, i could see how diff they are, but i felt better,

Later i realised the reason of my breakouts it was cuz of mask, and also sunscreen(yes sunscreen is good for protection, but it clogs my pores) so i stopped wearing as it is rainy season and i couldn't believe-

I DIDN'T WEAR MASK YESTERDAY OMG (im fully vaccinated)

I feel sooo much better, even if i get new breakouts i wont wear mask, i promise to myself, not letting this shitty insecurity get all over me, im beautiful with or w/o acne and scars.

And all the ppl who complimented me and made me feel better abt myself specially my bf, i love you😭💕 i just cant explain how overwhelmed i get ndjdkdnd

Honestly my writing process relies heavily on being inspired by something, and then devoted myself to it conceptually. I love finding music, pictures, vids, anything that buoys my inspiration and just steeping myself in it until it consumes my brain. Then I just smash the keyboard as long and hard as I can and fix it up later! I like to excite myself when I write, so I go into things with an idea or a vague plan, but let the text take itself in its own direction if its right. It's not always right! But sometimes spontanaeity has the best results.

The best writing process is one that feels exciting and right-- so write what excites you! Don't write what others want to read, write what you do.

I'm so happy you ended up loving Rebel! I loved GaRyung from the get go (you dont tell ur bf to shoot you, or else you're breaking up with him if you odnt have a core of steel). But I also hate the youth episodes, because BB!Gil Dong is like my least favourite child actor ever. Usually Kdramas have great to amazing child actors and then there's little GilDong trying to emote and ending up looking like he's trying to not soil his pants. One of the rare dramas that starts weak and ends strong af!

The opening sequence with Ga Ryung and Gil Dong is what got me to check out the drama but then when we actually met her in the story proper I was all “ehhh, you are OK, but Lee Honey’s character is more interesting” only to eventually realize that while I overlooked her at first because she was a normal woman in a sea of larger than life or damaged personalities, her quietness masked a heart of steel. Plus, she is very soul-whole, if it makes any sense, and I love that. (And the fact that she’s a normal, even traditional woman - no combat skills for her or even Lee Honey’s amazing musical talent and ruthless ambition and she is still portrayed as awesome.) Plus, narratively it makes sense that folk hero Gil Dong is married to what is essentially an everywoman in a lot of ways.

I actually found the progression of that love story very unusual for a kdrama. Because it was clear Gil Dong and Nok Soo loved each other until Nok Soo’s issues resulted in what they resulted in, and Gil Dong only saw Ga Ryang as a little sister and then it so gradually, it was almost imperceptible, progressed to more and now they love each other enough to literally die for each other but there are no flashy moments or declarations or unicorns. That’s an unusual narrative for a kdrama but one I love.

I hate kids portions in literally every drama so Rebel doesn’t stand out for that for me. I did think the actor who played Amogae was amazing, but nothing can get me into kid portions. It took me literal months to get past those eps.

But the early adult eps were not where my obsession started - that only kicked in when Gil Dong and the King’s stories intersected. I liked the early adult portions just fine, but watching Gil Dong be a cheeky peddler or a thug with a heart was entertaining but not earthshaking. And King Yeonsan is just hard to take in large doses for me because he is just so awful - it’s a good narrative and great portrayal but seeing him get with Nok Soo or tyrannize his court is not my narrative bag (I very rarely go for psychopathic villains; the sole exception being Cao Cao in Three Kingdoms 2010.) So until they started taking on the system, I thought Rebel was a very solid drama - well written and acted and paced - but it was not going on a fave list. But once they started their revenge for Amogae and then like inexorable circles got closer and closer to the rottenness of the Court, I got more and more invested. Watching Gil Dong and Yeonsan clash is amazing.

Also, Rebel feels a lot more lived in then a lot of sageuks - it’s the visual palette but also the fact that it covers things a lot of sageuks don’t. In fact, I don’t think I have ever seen a sageuk cover the lives of the dispossessed and their hardships and injustices as its main narrative outside of 2008 Hong Gil Dong and Chuno and to a somewhat lesser degree, Return of Iljimae. And when I bring in a HGD 2008 or Chuno comparison in a positive way, you know it’s all over for me in terms of adoring a drama forever. (Apparently Nokdu Flower also has that and is on my very short list.) Sageuks tend to focus on royals, warriors or merchants, and the few that don’t still have other drives - romance, comedy, Japanese occupation. Even the LJK Iljimae was not really class conscious that way because its hero was a wrongly dispossessed nobleman - victory was the restoration of the proper status quo. And that narrative of fighting or showing society-based injustice, one that is baked into the very fabric of the world for these people, is something I find fascinating.

Finally, the acting is amazing. I’ve seen all of these actors in other stuff and they have been solid to good there, but I’ve never seen any of them give a better performance than they have done here. Yoon Kyun Sang as Gil Dong takes my breath away, and the way the performance ratchets with the narrative, where by the end I want to jump the screen and join his rebels on sheer force of his just rage and strength alone - wow. (And he is not afraid to fall apart unprettily - in those eps where he is the King’s prisoner, it felt viscerally horrible to watch, like an intrusion.) I have seen Kim Ji Suk in a ton of dramas and was always moderately bored by him, but his portrayal of the unhinged monster than is Yeonsan is the first time I am riveted - he comes across as a living breathing human being who is also an irredeemable bight on the world without being a cartoon. Lee Honey is always always solid but she is extra good here because she gets a complex ambivalent character to play - Nok Soo has willingly stayed by a monster and did monstrous things herself but it’s hard to hate her because her every motivation and what drives her are portrayed so well. Chae Soo Bin takes a character who could disappear into wallpaper in other hands and makes her not just Gil Dong’s heart, but a woman I desperately care for, one I want to know more of. And it goes on and on (including Kim Jung Hyun as Mori. I have only seen him in Crash Landing and thought he was charming and whatever. But here I am all “OMG he can actually act this well?!?)

OK, I better stop because I wrote War and Peace in response to your short ask but also - the OST!!! I rarely pay attention to those but I have the entire hour long thing on constant repeat.
