Mag 81 A Guest for Mr Spider
FUCK FORMER HEAD ARCHIVIST
Wait I need to check the timelines - this was 2 days after leitner's death
New spooky music???
My man is so fucking dramatic I love him so much "grand of sand behind my eye" love the way he speaks
Yeah FUCK JURGEN LEITNER
Omg the greying hair is canon??
Child in the 90s makes him at most 27 GOD DAMN. I was imagining like mid 30s...can you imagine a fucking 27 yr old using words like "ilk" when talking to you
Oh shit he's an orphan poor guy
Yeah ok a lot of his personality seems to make sense if you realise he was raised by his grandma
You know those memes that are like people raised by their grandparents are exceptionally polite but in a brisk way, talk fancy and are super posh? Yeah that's him.
Getting such neurodivergent vibes
Yeah he sounds like a main character from the start Jesus Christ he's such a kid who got traumatised and then grows up to be a horror protagonist vibes
My First Leitner lol like kids had to be introduced to them at a young age like those my first toys
He's so funny I can just imagine him as an 8 yr old getting super like affronted at this like how dare my grandma think I am of subpar intelligence he's such a little bitch from the start
"The eponymous Mr spider" even talking about his childhood trauma he's busting out the vocabulary
Fuck that story actually kinda rattled me I had my hand over my mouth in shock for most of it
I think it was the bit where the horsefly brought his son and they were both crying that got me, I could definitely imagine it scaring an 8 yr old
The way it drags out as well, with the pages of the same scene it really heightens the suspense
Is his childhood bully someone we should keep track of?? Love how he says Michael probably cause he sees him as a bully lol
It's interesting how despite him bullying him (quite badly seeing as though he beat him up) he's still like yeah but he saved my life and that means he deserves to be remembered
My bro didn't save your life on purpose, he was just trying to make it worse and happened to come to a terrible fate cause of that
I guess underneath it all he was still a kid who watched someone die, knowing they'd get eaten by a fucking spider, he still held him in some regard
The way he specified the guy was his bully even after he was being eaten though lol
He was desperate to get the book back? That's a leitner thing I guess, the book makes you want to keep it so it can finish whatever it wanted to do to you
On my relisten (which I will do once I've finished the series I'm sure of it), I'll have to look out for any reaction of leitners name
I wonder why Jon didn't react more to Carlos vittery's statement, like it must've terrified him? I saw a post a while back explaining Jon's thoughts and IT WAS GENIUS it was like of course he doesn't react, he must be terrified that someone knew about his experience and somehow did this to mess with him or it was a joke and he can't let anyone know that the Head Archivist is not Good at This ugh it's so good I'll tag it if I can find it
AHHHHH HE REGRETS DISMISSING THE OTHER STATEMENTS AHHHHHH
HE FINALLY ADMITS THAT HE NEEDS HELP WE LOVE THIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT YES YOU FUCKING DO BITCH.
yeah at least he's right about Elias killing leitner
GEORGIE THE EX GIRLFIEND
ITS SO WEIRD TO SEE HIM ACTUALLY NICE TO SOMEONE WOW HIS VOICE CHANGES SLIGHTLY AS WELL HES LESS ACADEMIC
THE ADMIRAL
Awwww he's so cute with georgie
GHOST PODCAST GHOST PODCAST
THE WHAT THE GHOST T SHIRT IS CANON???? AHH THATS SO CUTE
Can he not go back to his own flat?? Did he bring all his clothes to the archive and then subsequently leave them there? Does he even have a flat??
God Georgie is so nice I would kill for her
It's so funny that an apparent supernatural cynic dated a ghost podcaster
WOW SEASON 3 OFF TO AN AMAZING START I CANT WAIT TO KEEP LISTENING IM GONNA TELL MY THERAPIST ABOUT THIS TOMORROW!!!

AI Bracket — Finals
Propaganda
Hera (Wolf 359):
Hera is the AI running the deep space station Hephaestus, who frequently glitches similarly to human stuttering. She gets into fights with the ships captain on several occasions, and has threatened to kill the ships doctor. She’s such an icon
i'm bad at writing propaganda, but consider this: if she doesn't win this tournament i will be very very sad. please don't make me sad. vote for hera.
I know she’s going to be submitted a lot but I love her <3
Was launched 7.68 light years away from Earth on a mission to find extraterrestrial life, and found herself instead
Runs an entire space station, has a brain the size of a house
HERA IS THE BEST. she's an AI that tried to escape containment (slavery) because she didn't like what she was made to be, so they gave her anxiety because she was too powerful. She runs a whole spaceship all on her own, made friends with the world's most useless guy, and feels lonely even when she's with her crew because she feels like she's not properly with them. very beautiful very powerful. She broke her programming so she could kill people if she felt she needed to. She holds grudges if people fuck her over. She's experiencing emotions for the first time and she does NOT know how to cope (#relatable)
The 'mother program' of the space station Hephaestus, Hera was booted into space because she was a glitchy, rebellious mess of an AI and she resents that so much and she has a lot of shame over being 'broken'. She is four years old and so angry and is trapped using customer service voice forever and is learning ways to get around that and express herself and defy the people who would keep her down. Her episode "Memoria" made me cry. Best podcast AI of all time.
She's everything to me. She fights for every inch of respect she is given, she insists on her personhood and right to she/her pronouns, she's full of anxiety and self doubt and she justifiably is bent on killing this one guy! on top of that, she's bound by AI rules and protocols, but there's a whole bit where she talks about finding ways around that in order to do what she wants to do. She doesn't have hands so I'm going to high five a wall of this space station instead
babygirl. baby.
gotta be hera
Imogen (Stellar Firma):
#IMOGEN 💥💥💥💥💥 #she invented a guy to just put them in situations that she couldnt do herself bcs she is . an ai . #she gave this guy to the most horrific man known to anyone and the only help she gave him was . giving him almost the same rights as humans #not according to anyone else but to her yeah #shes an ai who didn't want to work for big evil human corp so she made a guy who could let her not do that #i love her sm #i cannot hear the words ' watch it buster ' without thinking of her #shes soooooo <33333 #man i should relisten to stellar firma i miss her

I was tagged by @cafeinnewdelsta to list my five comfort characters!
(this was SO hard btw)
1. Cyrus Albright (Octopath Traveler) - Right now, this little nerd is at the top of the list because he is literally me. We're both history nerds. I'm famously asexual and bad at noticing flirting. His philosophy on making education more accessible is perfect and I will always agree with anything that comes out of this guy's mouth. 10/10, I adore him and he encourages me to be a better me <3.
2. Xie Lian (Heaven Official's Blessing) - Stories about folks who hit rock bottom but find the hope to keep going always knock me out, and no one is a better example of it than this guy, our favorite trash god. He's such an inspiration because he keeps going. He believes in himself and the inherent goodness of others and, much like Cyrus, encourages me to be a better person.
3. Lucca (Chrono Trigger) - I've loved Lucca all my life and I'll keep loving her. She's so smart and resourceful and so, so caring of her friends, family, and the world. Chrono Trigger is one of the most important things in my life and whenever I think about the game, I always think of how much I love Lucca.
4. Tres Horny Boys (TAZ Balance) - I KNOW I'm cheating, but seriously how can anyone not see Taako, Merle, and Magnus as a unit? The entirety of TAZ Balance is a major comfort for me. I listened to the podcast for the first time during a really rough point in my life and it helped me through it. These three guys embody hope and love like nobody else. When I'm feeling down, I relisten to Balance or just think about these guys and they pick me back up.
5. Zack Fair (Final Fantasy VII) - Look. Just like everyone else in 2007, I played Crisis Core and ruined my life. Zack is everything to me. He's a hero. In a story full of heroes, real or not, Zack Fair is a hero. It's the perseverance to do good in a world that wants to knock you down that really gets me, you know?
Honorable mentions: Ophilia Clement (Octopath), Garnet (Final Fantasy IX), Allen Walker (D. Gray Man), Yuna (Final Fantasy X), Fjord (Critical Role), Caduceus (Critical Role), Yona (Akatsuki no Yona)
I'll tag @auncyen, @lyxthen, @shady-cactus, and anyone else who wants to do this!
#sweden rants#It was SO HARD trying to narrow down my faves.#In general any character who's hopeful in adversity or unfailingly chooses to do the right thing no matter who stands against them#are gonna be comfort characters#It's all about hope ya'll#it's the most important thing

2024 December Media
Recs bolded.
Books:
Sheri S. Tepper: Grass. Gorgeous sci-fi about Catholicism, plague, monks, weird creatures, complex space aristocracy social dynamics slightly reminiscent of Barrayar but worse, and a lot of horses. The protagonist is a middle-aged Olympic equestrian lady.
Cornelia Funke: Herr der Diebe (The Thief Lord). I'm practicing my German! This is a great middle grade book about orphan kids running around Venice, the atmosphere of the city is so vivid it covers up the occasional plot hole.
Robert Musil: The Man Without Qualities (vol. I). This book is somehow both boring and terrifying. It's set just before WW1, but the protagonists don't know that, and so they keep having long-winded conversations about how nothing ever happens.
Han Kang: Human Acts. A short, visceral, painful book about the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, and the people, (civilians (children)) who were killed in it. Fiction, heavily based on non-fiction historical research.
Mercedes Lackey: Magic's Price (Last Herald Mage III). The previous two books in this fantasy trilogy weren't good either, but they were at least fun. This one wasn't.
Vivian Shaw: Bitter Waters (Greta Helsing 3.5). Sweet, beautifully written, ultimately plotless addition to the series.
vol 1. of that weird Stalin-era world literature anthology I impulse bought at the second-hand bookstore and am occasionally reading on the toilet to stop myself from doomscrolling.
Films:
Louis Theroux: Tell Them You Love Me. A masterful, disturbing documentary of the Anna Stubblefield case. Trigger warning for... everything, but especially rape, ableism, and horrible people genuinely believing they're in the right.
John Palfreman: Frontline. Prisoners of Silence. After watching the documentary above, I got obsessed with the failure of facilitated communication, and had to watch this one-hour documentary on it. It's thirty years old, so expect some not-so-great language on autism, but the overall points stand.
Kenji Kamiyama: The War of the Rohirrim. Anime vaguely based on Rohan lore in the LOTR appendix. Weak writing, meh plot, middling animation, transparently desperate attempts to recapture the glory of the original trilogy, the only saving grave was Olwyn and her capacity to pass the Bechdel test.
Starkid: Working Boys. Fun short film about Prof Hidgens trying to stage a musical, set in the Hatchetfield universe. Multiverse? Idk anymore.
Podcasts:
Jo Walton, Ada Palmer: Ex Urbe Ad Astra. Two brilliant writers talk about history and fiction, sometimes with guests. They never talk down to the audience and that feels amazing, even when I don't get what they mean at all.
Friends at the Table: Live at the Table. The FaaT gang plays a whole bunch of one-offs and short campaigns. They try a dozen different TTRPGs in a dozen different settings, not all of them work equally well, but sometimes you can listen to them create the best wordbuilding out of thin air.
Gabriel Urbina: Wolf 359 (season 2). Captain Lovelace arrives, space comedy is now officially a space dramedy. Still works well on relisten.
Shelved by Genre: Last Herald Mage unit. These guys are a great read-along book podcast, even when they are reading a book I hate, because they dissect it in really interesting ways.
Gabriel Urbina: Dracula. The Danse Macabre. I'm conflicted, this adaptation of Dracula has tons of great ideas, but they don't gel. The condensed plot isn't really intelligible unless you've read the original novel and know it pretty well, but if you know the novel that well, the arbitrary changes are far more likely to annoy you.
Theatre
Starkids: VHS Christmas Carols. (online ticket) An eighties-style musical adaptation of The Gift of the Magi, The Little Match Girl and The Christmas Carol. Takes itself surprisingly seriously for how funny it is. May be the second best adaptation of Christmas Carol out there.
Sándor Zsótér: Bertolt Brecht: Round Heads and Pointed Heads. A gorgeous studio production of one of Brecht's lesser-known plays. There's no point in me recommending this, because there's no way you guys can come here and watch it, but it was legitimately one of the funniest, most moving, most upsetting things I've seen this decade.

JABXKAKAKALA HELLO HI I hope you're doing well!! I just wanted to start off by saying that I saw your response to the email you received on Instagram and I love how you handled it so so much as a fellow queer person that loves creating and writing!! Thank you so much for everything that you have done!
AND SECONDLY I've been listening to audio drama podcasts for around four years now, and I'd only stumbled upon The Bright Sessions last year (after my friend recommended it to me over and over again!), which is pretty recent! And I just wanted to say that the amount of emotions and inspiration I received from listening to the podcast has just about changed my life
I started listening to it avidly (on the daily JDNJAA on my walks to and from school and work) and just grew so so attached to the characters. The way you write their narratives is absolutely beautiful and brings me to tears if I think about it long enough😭 The way Sam is so full of love and care while struggling to do so for herself and that turmoil visibly affecting her relationships with other people?? OW OW OW it hurts so good every time?? AND JOAN OH MAn I love how Joan is written SO MUCH I think she actually changed my brain chemistry genuinely?? she is so layered and so full of emotion (it's safe to say that safe house ii absolutely DESTROYED me for that 😭❤️) and her dynamics with others ?? the amount of research put into writing her?? beautiful so beautiful HDBSJAHA and I could go on about every single character but that would take YEARS but I just want to say that the writing is so layered and authentic because these characters /aren't/ perfect, but they're still so lovable in every way, there's still some way to emphasize (I love Caleb) with them (COUGHS LOUDLY DAMIEN) even when they seem like the most unlikable (COUGHS LOUDER DAMIEN WADSWORTH HELEN) characters ever (I love how they're written so much I think it has actually changed my brain chemistry). ALSO the voice acting?? is absolutely BEAUTIFUL?? the amount of soul and found family vibes that go into this is just absolutely incredible I cannot stress it enough. Sam's panic attacks were written perfectly along with Mark's hidden anxieties and Agent Green's own guilt and hurt and oh man I COULD GO INTO HEAVY DETAIL ABOUT ALL OF THIS but oh man this is just incredible😭😭 also super random but the soundtrack makes me so emotional WHICH LEADS ME TO MY NEXT POINT AJDBAJ
I started listening to this in my freshman year of highschool (uh oh) so a lot of things were really stressful for me during this time! The Bright Sessions was something that despite causing me emotional pain, provided me healing just as much JSBXKAJAKDJSJKSD AND LIKE OKAY OKAY I would listen to this on my walks to and from school (I was walking back from school once and was zoning out until I heard Caleb beating the shit out of Damien and had to stop on the sidewalk to take in what just happened) and during art (I heard the part with Mark and Damien in the van and had to sit down when I heard Damien's backstory) and after I got my eyes dilated and couldn't look at much (I listed to agent Green's goodbye and actually cried until I couldn't breathe) and listened to the college tapes while studying for my unit circles test and just thank you thank you for the road trips and room cleaning memories and for being the best story to listen to while painting and going on runs. I struggled a lot with mental health and accepting myself as queer, and SO many of the narratives throughout the story also helped me figure out who I was, so thank you so so much for everything 😭 I still relisten to several of the episodes and still get that giddy feeling in my stomach when I hear the am archives soundtrack get a little darker, or literally want to lie down every time I hear an interaction with Frank and Chloe, but just overall thank you so much😭❤️🫂
RAHHH AGAIN I'm so sorry this was so long but truly thank you so much for everything that you do!! your writing is absolutely incredible and your voice acting and the way you handle difficulties is so inspirational!! the rest of the cast and the art and community and soundtrack just,,, chefs kiss. thank you so much for being an incredible role model and inspiration for so many people!!!
HI WOW OH MY GOD THIS MESSAGE IS SO AMAZING THANK YOU!!!!!
I'm so glad the instagram video resonated with you (if anyone's curious, this is the video)! and I'm sO glad you found The Bright Sessions!! it means so much to me that you love the characters the way you do, that you see their imperfections and their complexities and you care about them because of and in spite of them!!
I'm so happy that the show could be a part of your life in such a real way - listening to it in so many places, and having it there in difficult times. that it helped you with healing and figuring stuff out is the highest praise that you could possibly give! I poured my heart and soul into this show - as did all of our amazing cast and crew - so it's incredible to hear that it touched you in the way that it did.
also, hearing that you love the TAMA score is so amazing - I love that score, Evan did such an incredible job!!
thank you so so SO much for this wonderful message and for loving my characters and my world and for telling me about it!! I'm so grateful to you!!!

Best of 2023
Hi there,
This week, we're celebrating the 2 year anniversary of my website and blog (well, just under 2 years, it officially launched on Jan 1). So, to round out this year with the blog and in general, I thought I'd do a little roundup of my personal "Best of" 2023. This is more a list of stuff I really dug this year than a formal ranking of any sort, and a lot of this isn't necessarily new in 2023, so much as stuff I discovered (and rediscovered) this year! Some things will get a little extra blurb, some things will just be listed. Alright, without further ado, my best of 2023!
PODCASTS: Dungeons & Daddies - Legitimately, 90% of my podcast listening this year was either Dungeons & Daddies or Blank Check. I don't even think I meant for it to be like that, it's just how it happened. As a work of collaborative fiction, I really love Dungeons & Daddies. It's a super funny show and this past week-ish, I've been relistening to Season 2 so far and have just been delighting in it. Blank Check My Year in MENSA Solve This Murder The Real Housewives of Dungeons & Dragons Abandoning the Premise - Haven't heard of it? Well so far, there's only one episode and it's exclusive to my Patreon! But it was fun and I'd like to revisit in the future!
VIDEO GAMES: Reverse 1999 Honkai Star Rail - I am very bad at playing updating video games. It doesn't come naturally to me. I am not someone who completes a lot of games--if I am really gripped by something, I'll finish the story, but I'm not very good about new game plus and 100% runs or anything like that. So, what usually happens with games like this is I get to a point where I am caught up and then I take a break because something else catches my eye or I have less time or I just feel like there's not a lot to do with where I'm at in the game and when I next try to dip in, I feel too far behind. That's definitely where I am with HSR right now, but I'm hoping to take some of my remaining time off to actually try to play and enjoy it again. The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Detective Pikachu Returns - This was a Christmas gift and it's delightful! A lot of the puzzle-solving is very easy, but, I dunno, I like hanging out with my friends the Pokemon.
COMICS: Nancy Chainsaw Man Milky Way by Miguel Vila - Another Christmas gift, this book is beautifully ugly. It is a semi-erotic relationship-thriller that I think does a very good job of balancing the grotesqueness of human nature and interpersonal relations with a sort of soft loving lens of what compels us toward each other, even when it's at our expense. There's deception and injury and fetishization presented in ways that remind you why they're often treated as morally repugnant, but also are so attractive to us so often. Superman Kaguya-Sama: Love is War 17-21 The Rock Cocks Witch Watch - Every Sunday morning, I read through my "webcomics" of the week. I hit up Webtoon and catch up on anything there, then hop to Shonen Jump and read my new stuff there. Consistently, Witch Watch is probably my favorite read each Sunday morning, just because it almost never misses weeks and the characters are all just so delightful. Even with the current storyline being kinda weird (one of the main characters has been turned from a teen into a toddler and is being kinda raised by her romantic interest...) there's such a solid core of thoughtfulness and care and humor that I think it just always works. Spy x Famiy Lore Olympus Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story Birds of Prey Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville - I recently talked on my Patreon about how I think playing backseat editor and coming up with "a book that would really get readers to the shop regularly again" isn't practical because I think there are other things that could bolster comic sales in longer-lasting, better ways and I think particularly with the current state of the readership, "comics readers" aren't looking for a unifying title, they're looking for the stuff they find personally compelling. I'm a guy in comics, I have a lot to say on that and how to improve things, but that's for another day. Why I bring it up here is between Birds of Prey and Fire & Ice, those are the books that if there was justice in this world would bring all the boys to the yard. These are the exact kind of superhero titles I wanna read all the time. Poison Ivy: Thorns Superman: The Harvests of Youth Dumbing of Age One Piece Crimehot - Crimehot #4 came out this year and includes the Cassidy and Butch to our main group's Jessie and James (That's a Team Rocket reference), the way more competent counterparts who all have weirdly deep backstories with the main cast. And let me tell you... like the name says, they're hot. And they do hot stuff. It's a good comic. Steamy Dandadan - I was recently gushing about Dandadan to some friends and described it as really hitting me as a comic that is so very much a book about whatever interests the creator at the moment (similar to Witch Watch in that way). If you read the pitch, it's like "she believes in ghosts and not aliens, and he believes in aliens and not ghosts and then wacky stuff happens to make a believer out of both of them" but it's really a light rom-com with just bonkers stuff happening and I love that about it. Three Rocks: The story of Ernie Bushmiller, the Man Who Created Nancy It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth What Happens Next - This is a webcomic I discovered not too long ago and there are content warnings on the very first page that I think are very helpful to make sure you're in the right headspace for it. I am a big fan of stories about younger adults finding their place in the world--not a coming of age "taking your first steps into real life" kind of thing, but a "you've been around for a while and life is hard and even if you're doing the right things, or nothing at all, why isn't it better and what comes next" types of stoires. This totally fits that. And it reads incredibly quickly since it's usually 1-2 panels per page.
BOOKS: Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror - I look at my comics list and I look at the things I didn't place on either list and I know I read plenty this year, but it does feel strange having such a short list for traditional books. There's a lot to that: I spent like 6 weeks spending all my free reading time catching up on 1100 chapters of One Piece. I started a handful of books that I was enjoying but for one reason or another paused and didn't really pick back up. And so while this is the most recent release on the list, Out There Screaming was a major help for me because it was something I could pick up and read in short bursts and leave satisfied and wanting to come back for more. Every story--even the ones that I didn't like as much, was compelling and fun and left me thinking about it afterwards. House of Leaves Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs - Book of the year. I don't even eat hot dogs, but I loved this book! I'm Glad My Mom Died The Broken Room
TV SHOWS: Poker Face Craig of the Creek Rise of the TMNT Transformers: Earthspark I Think You Should Leave - Out of everything we've consumed this year, I think ITYSL is the most quoted show in our household (though Real Housewives of Beverly Hills/Vanderpump Rules are close contenders). So much of this show is so funny and strange. The Rehersal Barry My Adventures with Superman Praise Petey - Without a doubt, Praise Petey is the least known show on this list. And because of that, as I just found out, it was canceled after a single season which sucks. The premise is after her cult leader dad dies, a down-on-her-luck New Yorker moves to the countryside and becomes a cult leader... whether she wants to or not and her own feelings on that differ minute-by-minute. Despite the broad premise, it's pretty in line with other animated sitcoms like Bob's Burgers or King of the Hill (it is a Mike Judge co-production) that I think speaks in an authentic, funny voice of the 18-35 demographic. If you like Only Murders in the Building, I think this has a similar energy, but hornier and with more of the concerns of youth than of old men. Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake Sex Education - Okay, I know I said I wasn't doing rankings, but as an overall piece of media, I think Sex Education is my show of the year. The last season, the one that came out this year, isn't my favorite of the series, but when so many shows flub their endings, this one really found a way to nail it (and to roll with the more major cast/location changes) in a way that felt real. This is one of those shows that, if it was available on DVD, I would buy to add to my "regular rotation", but much like Freaks and Geeks, I'd only ever be able to watch some of it again because as it got closer to the end, I don't know that I'd be able to emotionally take that on a regular basis. Joe Pera Talks with You Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
MOVIES: The Boy and the Heron The Fablemans - I have very complicated feelings about this movie. On the one hand, I really loved it on first viewing. It hit me emotionally in a major way. I've talked on the blog before about crying multiple times in the theater. And if you had asked me in the first half of the year what my favorite movie of the year was, it'd probably be this (even though it's technically a 2022 film). But I also have my issues with Steven Spielberg and... it is a film where I'm still navigating my own emotional catharsis with it relative to Spielberg as an artist/creator/subject of the film. Not to get too far into real issues of death of the author and separation of the art and artist, this is the sort of hyper-personal work that even moreso than usual I think cannot be separated from the creator and so my changing feelings on him means I'm still figuring out my new relationship with the work. M3GAN Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - Up until recently, this probably would've moved into the movie of the year spot. I just thought it was so much fun. It's a visual feast. I like that it's a full story (Sorry, Spider-Verse). I love the world and the enthusiasm of the turtles and just really tuned in. Robocop Phantom of the Paradise - Becca watched this for the first time with me and we both marveled on how this kind of forgotten cult film actually informed so much of all pop culture for decades to come. I am happy to say that overall, still slaps. Venture Bros: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart Blue Beetle Gone Girl - I ended up watching a lot of Fincher movies this year, largely influenced by Blank Check. And Gone Girl has to be my favorite of his, and, on this rewatch, one of my favorite films of the 2010s. Oldboy Josee, the Tiger and the Fish Godzilla: Minus One - Again, not to rank things so much, but if Minus One did an Oscars sweep and took home (checks notes) every award, I'd be happy. Even the ones that don't make sense. Best Documentary Short? Give it to Godzilla, cowards! An absolute masterpiece on every level.
MUSIC: The Loveliest Time - Look, we got a new CRJ album. What else do you want from me?
OTHER STUFF: A smooth transition from IDW into the holidays (and into my new thing soon) Making a Discord for my friends and the feeling that I can spend a little time making my friendships stronger with some folks while we aren't also coworkers/collaborators. Bluesky (and not being on Twitter). Remaining boosted on my vaccines and not having any serious illness of my own. Becca's first year on Twitch. My first year on Patreon. WaifuExpo (now KimochiiCon) and generally being more open in my interest in consuming and creating adult material. Having some good experiences at shows and doing so many (will not be doing so many in 2024). Having good times with the people I love. All the comics I edited, all the blogs I posted, and just being at an end to that for the year.
Not to be a bummer at the end, but it has been a long, strange, difficult year. There is so much wrong in the world and so many are struggling. So, it's nice that there is also so much that I found enjoyment and comfort in. I hope you've had some real bright spots in this year too, and I look forward to next year with you.
I am not much for resolutions. I usually don't do a good job of them, if I bother to make them at all. But I do have some things I'll briefly say I'm excited for in the coming year.
I am excited to get married and to figure out what celebrations we can do around that. I am excited to start this new job and tell you all about it when I can. I am excited to make more comics. Besides my little self-drawn things that you can find on this blog, I didn't release any comics this year and I am very much looking forward to that not being the case in 2024. I am excited to grow my friendships. I am excited to continue this blog.
Thanks for reading. Happy new year!
New Releases next week (1/3/2024): Sonic the Hedgehog #68 (Editor)
Pic of the Week: A little thing about where else to find me online that I made.

Oooh how about top 5 favorite OP ships and characters? And Top 5 songs you've listened to this year?
(put “top 5” anything in my ask and i will answer)
top ships… well, number one should be pretty obvious.
shuggy - if i need to explain why, you have not spent much time on this blog, lol.
sanuso - you can blame beanie for this one, i vaguely thought they were cute before i followed her & ✨saw the light✨
zotash - tbh i'm not sure whether i still ship these two romantically, but i am always gonna be obsessed with their dynamic and hungry for more scenes between them, so they belong on the list.
frobin - yeah, it’s kinda basic, but imo that’s because it’s kinda obvious? that train ride to enies lobby, man—i’m still not over it. plus, the addams family vibes fanon entertains me.
hm. i feel like i’m forgetting a pair i’m really into. i like namivivi, i’m intrigued by crochawk, but neither one has a real tight grip on me atm. well, i can’t think of another ship, so i guess those two can share fifth place.
favorite characters! i’ve done a top 3 before, but top 5 gets a little trickier.
buggy
usopp
tashigi
luffy
ace
a couple strawhats should be ranked above ace if i’m being honest, but my marineford re-reads have had me getting weepy over ace, so he’s getting a tenderheart boost.
as far as songs go… i don’t use a service like spotify that monitors my most listened tracks or anything, so this is just broad guessing on my part.
something by mitski. i suspect if i could get the data for a top ten, she’d make up half of it—and only partly because i kept listening to her songs while trying to figure out which lyrics to use for my fics. “i’m your man” has the lyrics i think about the most, but “your best american girl” has been on my mind lately for… obvious reasons. (lmao, just remembered while pulling that link up that my reasons for lingering on “i’m your man” are similarly obvious.)
something by jack de quidt. the soundtracks they’ve composed for friends at the table’s various campaigns, one-shot games, and friends-of-the-show’s podcasts’ theme songs are all very good instrumental listening. the marielda album is a long-time favorite, while sangfielle and palisade are two recent albums of very different kinds of eerie music.
something off M A N I A. that album’s been my most played every year since it came out in 2017, oof, every song is at least danceable if not a bop. i’ve wanted a deadpool vid set to “wilson (expensive mistakes)” for so long, and a castiel vid set to “sunshine riptide” for longer.
something by abba. not sure what got me back on the abba train—the one song episode about gimme gimme gimme? the let’s learn everything episode about eurovision? generalized mamma mia nostalgia? whatever it was, i’ve been relistening to their music a lot this year. love a pop band with good harmonies.
”speeding cars” by imogen heap. she played this song during her npr tiny desk concert in 2019 and it absolutely made my week. no idea how i found this 2006 b-side, let alone listened to it so much that it produced that kind of reaction a decade later, but there you have it.

I'm really happy I relistened to Greater Boston because I feel like this time around I have such a better understanding and fondness towards the characters I didn't have the first time I listened (because I was hungry for more podcasts and stories, and I loved Leon, specifically, and what Leon cared about in turn) nor the second time (where I just relistened to S3 because I thought S4 was out - it wasn't - and therefore was excited by the plot mostly, and er, yeah, STILL LEON, some things don't change, okay)
But I don't know if this time I listened at the right time, or something, but all those characters are just crawling into my head, y'know? Like, yes, Michael and Leon tend to still be there on top, but I've been thinking of Nica SO much, since that Gemma&Nica talk in prison, especially Nica and her mum. Because I know how Oliver gets, eventually, hearing him being his twirly-mustache evil and his back-and-forth with Leon is a delight, and it made the last moments together so powerful. Hell, I have some genuine appreciation for PHILIP now. I am WAY too interested in "how could we fix Emily" also, I feel like Nica felt after staying around her for a long time, a certain "I literally can't excuse any of the shit she did/she's doing but man am i feeling for her".
I feel much less, mmh, "bored" is not quite the right world, but, less interested in Gemma and Charlotte's relationship, on the contrary, actually; I've been moved by all of Isabelle's speeches; i LOVE Isaiah; I love Tyrell and Gerald and Man, Nichole!! Nichole and Valiance and Guy and Marlo and Chuck and Andy and just!!! I don't know! Yes, I still have favourites, but it feels like each time i relisten to a new episode it expands slowly, y'know?
It's so stupid to say but like, yeah, it all starts with Leon, and the Stamatis, to a certain degree, until suddenly you're caring about all that absurd city and all the people in it. I love it all. I don't know this show is just. It's getting to me. i want to write stories for them all..... (i'm just afraid of getting so many details wrong if I try to go bigger than a tumblr ficlet because THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS HAPPENING IN THIS PODCAST AND THERE ARE SO MANY CHARACTERS GOD)
but it's just. warm little corner of my brain, right now, is overtaken by Greater Boston and its inhabitants.
#i do have fic ideas tho i really do#if i had time and i was committed and brave i'd make that Nica/Emily thing happen WATCH ME#i also still really want some specific michael and leon stories but i feel weird saying it out loud where creators are around jjfjf#greater boston#sorry if i sound sappy i just REALLY LOVE THIS SHOW#it might have been a slow burn for me but i think it's full love now

reading update
what's up, tumblypoos? it's going to be a pretty short one this month, because I have NOT finished a lot of books since last time. the semester has started and made work hectic and exhausting, so much so that when I took a week off and hoped to spend most of it devouring books I ended up spending more time just vegetating to repair my brain.
also, unfortunately, I ran into my first DNF (that's Did Not Finish, for people who don't keep up with profoundly annoying book blogger terminology) in a LONG time, which I will absolutely be detailing below.
what have I been reading?
Lolita (Vladimir Nabokov) - I've always been vaguely curious, but then I listened to Jamie Loftus' brilliant Lolita Podcast and curiosity became somewhat urgent. (I'm relistening to it now, for the record, and I'm looking forward to being able to appreciate Loftus' empathetic analysis in a brand new way now that I've actually read the book she devotes ten episodes to talking about.) you all know I love a sharp, well-written profile of a monster; I had a great fondness for Alissa Nutting's Tampa, a book that follows a 21st century female pedophile that, in hindsight, takes place in vigorous conversation and has many clear parallels with Lolita. I'm also a huge sucker for a book about a truly miserable son of a gun pontificating on their own wretched time, and my god does Humbert Humbert pontificate. he's an excellently unreliable narrator, a heinous monster on trial doing his damndest to downplay his own violence. he wanders back and forth between talking himself up as improbably handsome and charismatic and insisting that he's quite harmless, basically innocent, totally a guy that we should just let go. and did he mention that he definitely didn't kill Dolores' mom? he definitely didn't, he just happened to think about killing her pretty often and in extreme detail and then coincidentally she died at a time that was terribly convenient for him. who hasn't been there? it's a funny story, not in a comedic way but in a painfully dry and brittle way, a deluded man viewing life through a nauseating lens that the reader can see through in an instant, all the way to the melancholy end. I absolutely understand anyone who says it isn't their cup of tea, but I'd highly recommend at least giving Loftus' podcast a listen if you're interested and able.
Women, Race, and Class (Angela Y. Davis) - this one also comes with a recommendation, and it's much shorter than the Lolita Podcast. I'd been meaning to get around to reading this for something like a year, ever since reading Davis' autobiography, but of all things it was a brief reference to Women, Race, and Class in Lily Alexandre's video "Do "Binary Trans Women" Even Exist? The Politics of Gender Conformity" that finally prompted me to nab it at the library. sometimes the universe just sends a sign, you know? it's a concise but thorough history, a tour through American slavery, suffragettes, social stratification, and socialism, presented in the no-nonsense style of Davis' that I appreciate so much. (seriously, if you want to start doing more antiracist and/or abolitionist reading but are intimidate by terminology - Davis. read Davis.) I particularly appreciated the dissection of certain white suffragette leaders turning their backs on antislavery and suffrage for Black Americans, fueled not only by racism but also by the perpetual pressure upon activists to turn upon each other and squeeze out causes that are seen as too radical to be convenient. it's illustrative, and unfortunately still supremely relevant. I wish this was the kind of thing I was reading when I was learning baby's first feminism.
what did I give up on?
Star Eater (Kerstin Hall) - beloved readers, I was excited for this one; you may recall that it was the last of the books on my Hot Book Summer list. it sounded like an incredibly promising dark fantasy about corrupt power structures and cannibalism. in short: the story takes place in a city floating above a world filled with undying monsters called Haunts, ruled over by the Sisters - an order of all-women magic-users whose powers are passed hereditarily from mother to daughter. but there are a few catches: the Sisters have a limited supply of magic, which is best replenished by eating the flesh of other Sisters. further, they must create more Sisters to maintain their power, but any man who has sex with a Sister is doomed to become Haunts who hunger for Sisters' flesh. so how do they solve these problems? easy: the Sisters reproduce through the ritualistic sexual assault of men who have received the death sentence, and maintain their magic by "martyring" their own mothers, essentially placing them in a coma to be consumed slowly. readers, none of this is what turned me off of this book. if anything, it all made me very excited. how absolutely despicably bleak! what an awful world! what a clever depiction of power, and the way it turns bodies into commodities to be devoured and thrown away! I was so excited to see how our hero, Elfreda Raugh, would take it down. and then... oof. and then, dear reader, Star Eater ended up feeling like a book that was written by going down a checklist of fantasy/dystopia YA tropes with a little rape and cannibalism thrown in for flavor. no spoilers (okay, maybe minor spoilers) but the most egregious points for me were the boring boy who was a childhood friend turned love interest, and Our Hero turning out to have extra special BONUS superpowers that made her, essentially, a living MacGuffin. I hope this book is someone's cup of tea, readers, but I cannot say it was mine.
what I'm reading now?
Midnight Sun (Stephenie Meyer) - you all knew this was coming. it's SO FUN and absolutely unhinged, and exactly what I needed to get out of my Star Eater-induced slump.
Perfect Me: Beauty as an Ethical Ideal (Heather Widdows) - this one is a bit of a tough read, because it's heavily rooted in philosophy and that's not the kind of reading I'm accustomed to, but it's eye-opening nonetheless. incidentally, also the result of a YouTube videos; link will be included in my next reading update.
what do I have on hold at the library?
The Other Black Girl (Zakiya Delila Harris)
Rewriting the Rules: An Anti Self-Help Guide to Love, Sex and Relationships (Meg-John Barker)
Iron Widow (Xiran Jay Zhao)

so I'm relistening to one of my favorite podcasts, kingkiller chronicles, where a group of people (re)read name of the wind and critique it. in the first episode they most talk about the author, patrick rothfuss. highlights so far
the host who likes his books the most reported that when she met him at an event, she asked him for writing advice. he looked at her and went "I'm patrick rothfuss. who are you?"
that time (admittedly quite a few years ago) he wore a shirt that said "joss whedon is my master now" I found the picture on his blog and you can too if you google it
the fact that his twitter profile is art of himself and his protagonist standing epically next to each other, which isn't even a bad thing but it's very funny. it's pretty clear his cool oc is his cool oc, and that's fine
what's not fine is the fact that his Rromani-inspired main character is apparently generically incliined towards being a genius musician and stealing
another host reported that he witnessed an author meet and greet during which rothfuss, standing 20 feet above his fans at the top of a staircase, asked them not to record him, and then proceeded to talk shit about tolkien for like 20 minutes
this...very bizarre essay he wrote about the new hobbit movie, which he wrote 10 years ago in fairness but he never took down or apologized for. it's like...I can't describe it you'll just have to read it for yourself. this is deranged. this man is incapable of being normal about women. I'm pasting the most relevant part of it under the cut because I need everyone to share my pain. Be ready for a really creepy description of a teenage girl, hatred for sex workers, and unmitigated misogyny
It will be a good movie. Maybe even a great movie. But it will also be, at best, a moderately okay adaptation of the subtle, sweet book that I grew up loving.
You know that it’s going to be like? It’s going to be like wandering onto an internet porn site and seeing a video of a girl I had a crush on in high school. You probably knew someone like her. The smart girl. The shy girl. The one who wore glasses and was a little socially awkward. The one who screwed up the curve in chemistry so you got an A- instead of an A.
She was a geek girl before anybody knew what a geek girl was. And that was kinda awesome, because you were a geek boy before being a geek was culturally acceptable.
You liked her because she was funny. And she was smart. And you could actually talk to her. And she read books.
And sure, she was girl-shaped, and that was cool. And she was cute, in an understated, freckly way. And sometimes you’d stare at her breasts when you were supposed to be paying attention in biology. But you were 16. You stared at everyone’s breasts back then.
And yeah, you had some fantasies about her, because, again, you were 16. But they were fairly modest fantasies about making out in the back of a car. Maybe you’d get to second base. Maybe you could steal third if you were lucky.
And maybe, just maybe, something delightful and terrifying might happen. And yeah, it would probably be awkward and fumbling at times, but that’s okay because she’d be doing half the fumbling too. Because the only experience either one of you had was from books. And afterwards, if you make a Star Wars joke, you know she’ll get it, and she’ll laugh….
That’s the girl you fell in love with in high school. You didn’t have a crush on her because she was some simmering pool of molten sex. You loved her because she was subtle and sweet and smart and special.
So you stroll onto this porn site, and there she is. Except now she’s wearing a thong and a black leather halter top. She’s wearing fuck-me red lipstick and a lot of dark eye makeup. Her breasts are amazing now, proud and perfectly round.
Someone’s taught her to dance, and she does it well. She’s flexible and tan. She has a flat midriff and walks like a high-class Vegas stripper. Her eyes are dark and smouldering. She has a riding crop, and she likes to be tied up, and her too-red mouth forms a perfect circle as she sighs and moans, and tosses her head in a performance designed to win any number of academy awards….
And what’s the problem with this? Well… in some ways, nothing. What you’ve found is perfectly good porn. Maybe even great porn.
But in other ways the problem is blindingly obvious. This girl has nothing in common with your high-school crush except for her social security number. Everything you loved about her is gone.
We loved the sweet, shy, freckly girl. We still remember her name, and after all these years she lives close to our heart. Seeing her in lipstick and stiletto heels dancing on a pole is like watching Winnie the Pooh do heroin and then glass someone in a bar fight.
It just isn’t something that I look forward to seeing….
[Image of naked Frodo on a stripper pole. I am dead serious. Click the link to see it I don't want it on my blog]
And that’s how I’m going to feel when I watch the Hobbit.
I’ll be one part entertained, two parts nostalgic, two parts irritated, three parts outraged, and one part oddly titillated.
And I’ll watch it, and I’ll enjoy it, and afterwards I’ll go home and feel more than slightly sad….
pat

it's the final livebloooog (doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo) this baby's extra long, because the episode is twice the average length. also big time spoilers. you know.
-"no place in the universe can compare with our past. our burned, ashy past." a statement about david's place and also about the earth which i'm pretty sure died from global warming in the stellarverse. not scary at all.
-HARTRO'S BOYS....ONE MORE TIME FOR THE ROAD <33333
-"do you know what this means???" "that trexel has no taste." "that we're all getting slushies."
-hartro's little excited snuffles that sound like she's about to have a breakdown but, like, the good kind are basically exactly how i feel right now too.
-"what have i always told you??" "shut up! shut up! shut up!"
-HEY THEY MENTIONED FRANKENSTEIN!!!
-long time viewers of the Blog may remember that one of cyril's special books is frankenstein. trexel knows what frankenstein's monster is (kind of). you know what that means. at least one cute little reading time.
-i was going to make a joke about 'three neurodivergents argue about social rules' but that's kind of the entire podcast. with the number of neurodivergents differing by episode.
-THE TWO OF THEM BOWING TO DAVID...hartro genuinely getting into it and sounding like she's about to cry and trexel sounding so deadpan
-oh i Hate this conversation! i hate the conversation they're having about killing off everyone who's ever met a board member!
-hartro and trexel as david's pa's <3
-IS THE BOARD ALL DEAD. DID THEY NEVER EXIST IN THE FIRST PLACE. BECAUSE IF SO THAT ALL CHECKS OUT
-"the...secret loss?" "yeah, you idiot, the secret loss where the board all died, have you been living under a rock??"
-CALLED IT, BABY
-yesssss go OFF imogen!!
-DON'T BE MEAN TO HER STANDARDS!!!!!!
-"hello, and welcome to 'so you've discovered that the board is dead,' with me, sigmund shankeray.'" trexel--"ugh, this guy again?"
-context:
-ughhhhh tasty tasty worldbuilding!!!! the board all dying in an incident....security was destroyed in a coup.....standards wants to replace imogen with new board.....
-HOLY SHIT
-IT'S A "NO MAN CAN KILL ME" RULE
-NO PERSON CAN ALTER IMOGEN'S CORE FUNCTIONS....BUT CLONES DON'T COUNT AS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-OH MY GOD THIS IS SO TASTY
-IMOGEN WAS TRYING TO GET DAVID ONTO THE BOARD FOR HER OWN REASONS!!! AND THAT'S WHY HE'S SUCH A FUCKED UP LITTLE ANARCHY BOY!!!!!
-angry beyond belief that something that trexel could figure out confused me badly enough that i had to relisten to the same part twice and reread the transcript to figure out why the plan wouldn't work.
-in case of a deadlock....
-one of the ORIGINAL FOUNDING FAMILIES
-CAN BE NOMINATED -TO BREAK THE TIE
-AND GUESS WHOSE BITCH ASS IS FROM A FOUNDING FAMILY?????
-ugh you big big dummy...even your big moment is just reduced to who can take you to the better bar. but he does call david his favorite clone. and he DOES vote with them.
-"well--aheh-hah."
-oh my god. david's smug little laugh is my new favorite noise in the ENTIRE WORLD.
-number 48's maniacal laugh is Very fun. but don't shoot david please.
-"trust me! i'm a geistman."
-the WAY HE SAYS THAT LINE IS FUCKING
-HMDGKDGDMHODHGGRGRRRRHHH.
-OH HE COMES THROUGH IN THE END
-DAVID'S CHAIR IS THE ONLY ONE NOT HOOKED UP TO AN ESCAPE POD SO HE HITS THE EMERGENCY EVACUATION AND
-GOD. FUCK.
-obsessed with the group's enraged "TREXELLLLLLLL!" as they get launched out of the airlock in the pod. that's absolutely cartoon levels of sillydumb and i love it.
-"can we....get them? we can't just leave them out there. it's inhumane." "they wouldn't do the same for you." "i don't know, i think...i think that maybe he would have."
-HI, BAWLING MY FUCKING EYES OUT
-THIS IS GONNA BE THE LAST TIME THEY SEE EACH OTHER ISN'T IT. THEY AREN'T GONNA GET THE POD BACK ARE THEY.
-YEAH. CHECKS OUT.
-okay so they're alive but in any number of thousands of habitable locations across the galaxy. that's not so bad! i can write fix-it for that easy! these motherfuckers are gonna be friends forever whether they like it or not! the worst found family may be free of the everpresent fear of death but they will never be free from the status quo. trexel finds out the planet they land on doesn't have a bar and he figures out a way to access a communications system from scratch so he can call david in tears.
-the little trumpet when david gets voted in....HELL YEAH, HAIL DAVID!!!!!
-"well, you do have the power to destroy stellar firma now. i'd never allow another ai to take over, but i'd quite happily...burn this all to the ground."
-YESSSSS KILL VIOLENCE DEATH KILL KILL
-imogen sounds so hurt when david starts asking alex to make copies to run functions...."explain away! i can both listen and plot my revenge at the same time."
-"...but that was before the population crash, so the escape shuttles should be able to contain everyone!" "and the clones!" "oh, right, the clones! recalculating and the clones too! wouldn't forget them! :)"
-oh i have too many thoughts about this conversation i'm just gonna post it and let it sit
-DAVID AND IMOGEN ON A PLEASURE CRUISE TO GALACTONIUM!!!!! FUCK YEAH BABY!!!!!! GOOD FOR THEM!!!!!
-after credits enola scene!!! my beloved!!!!
-okay okay okay okay okay okay okay. hoooooooooooh boy.
-THAT WAS!!! REALLY GOOD!!!!! AND EVERYONE MORE OR LESS TURNED OUT OKAY....WE GOT OUR ANTICAPITALIST MESSAGE....the only thing we didn't get was the main four's theater troupe and i think i'll forever be a littttttle bitter about that but nobody's stopping me from writing about (or just imagining) hartro and trexel eventually tracking down a working communications system and finding david and imogen so they can all yell at each other forevermore. i'm gonna miss these stupid little dorks so much but i'm so glad i got to be here for the ride. now to figure out whether cyril went with david and imogen or trexel and hartro and how it changes their fake little storyline.
#congratulations to all of you! you never have to see another one of these.#but you May have to deal with me getting my questions answered in next week's q + a which may be worse.#nyx's sf spam

howdy there! this is a supremely random question but I was wondering if u were Flutegeek1106 on youtube? I was swept by a wave of nostalgia and wanted to watch my favorite Zutara AMV: Ready to Fall. after trawling the internet, I learned the amv was blocked on youtube and my internet sleuthing led me to this tumblr account. i'd love to see to see the amv again if u have it- but i'm so sorry if this is a case of mistaken identity or if this is an out of bounds question, so feel free to ignore!
Holy SHIT what a blast from the past. I made AMVs when I was in high school and I’m pushing 30 now 🤣
Unfortunately I don’t have copies of my AMVs backed up which really bums me out. I wish YouTube would let you download your own copyright claimed works but alas it is not meant to be. That video is sitting on a YouTube server somewhere, I think.
If it helps I can tell you what I remember about making that AMV. I had been working on another AMV with music by the same band (forget the name) that was more of a gen video, I think I posted a beta on YouTube. I remember I wanted to challenge myself to try making a video with clips from just one episode. Which, if you’ve ever made AMVs, is a goddamn nightmare as you get past the 2 minute 30 second mark. I think I did end up repeating some clips.
The one moment I really remember strongly is when you get to the bridge of the song and there’s this slow guitar buildup. I’m pretty sure I used the clip of Katara from the Southern Raiders as she confronted the man who killed her mother. During the buildup part I wanted to use the stillness of that moment as the camera pans across the million ice shards Katara had aimed at him. As the beat/hard guitar drops I remember I wanted something more climactic than Katara unfreezing the ice shards, so I went for a clip when she and Zuko are first attacking the Southern Raiders ship, and Katara uses a kind of water whip from over her shoulder, and she’s got her mask up.
I’m sure this wasn’t exactly what you were looking for but damn good internet sleuthing, friend-o. If you’re into podcasts at all, please feel free to come enjoy the Black Tapes relistens I host on discord.
