It’s interesting that when referring to Michael and Mikleo’s relationship, the words “血を分ける” is used instead of “血が繋がる”—both meaning basically the same thing (literally “to share blood” and “to be related by blood” but when you put it like this in English, they sound the same on the surface, they’re both usually translated as “blood-related” anyway), but the former is used to indicate anyone who’s directly and closely related (so parents, siblings, children, etc.) instead of the latter that is more general (including uncles, aunts, cousins, etc.) but still more limited than “血を引く” (an entire family lineage).

Homestuck Reread: Act 4, Part 4/4 (p. 1865-1988)

Oh boy it's the final stretch for this Act. I want to take a moment to express my appreciation for all the new followers I've gained over the course of this reread. I have 60 now, which is incredible. Thank you all!

With that said, this post will contain some... sticky subject matter. I wonder how many of you will choose to dip after this.

Oh my fuck it's the ectobiology section. Out of all the convoluted and frivolous mechanics in Homestuck, this one might be the worst in my opinion. Worse than the adventure game jokes cribbed from Problem Sleuth, worse than the punch card alchemy and other ponderous Sburb mechanics... I'd say it's worse than the time travel shit, but this is actually more of a subset of that. So yeah, time travel continues to be the worst thing about Homestuck, and shit like this and the bunny subplot are prime examples of that. But my ire is fully directed at ectobiology at this moment.

The stuff I mentioned before at least has a purpose; they parody needlessly complicated video game mechanics. But ectobiology doesn't have a purpose. It's not funny, nor does it serve the story in a meaningful or even interesting way. So why does it exist? Is it to drive home the point that these select individuals are the "chosen ones" by Sburb? If I had to hazard a guess what Hussie meant by that...

Earth is a vile place and must be destroyed, so sayeth Sburb. Everything living on it is flawed by extension, so its chosen destroyers must be fully disconnected human society and the planet itself. These destroyers have been plucked from the aether and reconstituted from bullshit plot slime in a faraway part of time and space, ensuring that they are unquestionably divorced from anything from Earth, and therefore pure.

Now that I type all that out, it's no wonder none of the kids were all that shaken up about bringing about the apocalypse. Considering that they're essentially game constructs with no actual ties to humanity, it really throws away any sort of conflict and sense of sacrifice brought about by destroying the planet. All the innocents who perished in the meteor showers? Eh, fuck them! They were all NPCs anyway. All hail the slime people!

Okay, I'm sure this wasn't Hussie's actual intent, but if there's no grander symbolism at play, what else is there? None of this adds anything to the plot. The fact that the main cast are non-humans is never touched upon and the whole thing reads as superfluous sci-fi garbage. The only significance the meteors carrying the babies had was that John's Nanna died from a meteor strike. But it was already suggested way earlier that she died because she was crushed by the Colonel Sassacre book.

That was a perfectly serviceable, slightly comedic death befitting of a family of jokesters. There's no need to escalate it and involve a giant meteor.

One other thing I take umbrage with: because the cast were all birthed from the same slurry, this means that Dave and Rose are now """related""". They aren't related by blood, no, but by slime. Which, in the eyes of Hussie and the fandom at large, means the same thing, I guess. Even though they never grew up as siblings, lived separate lives in different parts of the country, and only met online as strangers before developing a (very flirtatiously charged) friendship, the fandom treats them as if they're flesh and blood brother and sister. It boggles my mind. Why is this being treated as legitimate? Did Hussie plan all along to take the two characters with the best chemistry only to pull a Luke and Leia on us? Why would he write them like that if this was his endgame? Does he just have an incest fetish?

I wouldn't doubt it because themes of incest are actually quite pervasive within Homestuck. And that's without even mentioning how Hussie developed an alien race that fundamentally relies on incest to reproduce. Ectobiology creates several relationships, incidental or otherwise, that tie nearly the entire main cast in a complicated web of pseudo-familial dynamics. Like John is actually the kids' progenitor/father because he's the one who brought them all into existence. So even if he isn't related to Rose or Dave by genes or slime, he still gave birth to them in a sense.

I've even seen people say that since Betty Crocker/The Condesce was Nanna's adopted mother, that makes the Egbert/Crocker/Harley/English family tree "related" to the Peixes trolls, so any ship with that combination is "incest." What if I told you that Feferi is related to all the other trolls via bullshit slime mechanics as well? I guess that makes Johnkat incest too. And if John is Dave's father... gasp! Davekat is also incest!? It's over folks, burn everything down.

Anyway, I don't acknowledge Rose and Dave as biological siblings because I don't treat being born from a vat of slime as the same as being birthed from the same womb. That would be treating ectobiology as valid and sensible, which I refuse to do. I don't want to lend Hussie's fixation on incest any amount of approval. All I know is that the trolls are made of the same stupid plot sludge and nobody cares if you ship them. There are no humans and trolls: only slime constructs. Either everyone is related or none of them are. You can't have both.

In the end, none of this matters. The world would be a much happier place if we all collectively agreed to forget ectobiology's existence. If this ruffles your feathers, just block me. Don't come at me because I'll just ignore you.

So Grandpa Harley had time-traveled forward to the future and into Sburb before returning to the past, living out his life on Earth, and dying. Fucking okay I guess!

At least this answers the question I had that yes, Mom Lalonde knew what she was doing before entering the game because Grandpa told her everything. Same with Bro and Dad, it seems.

Ah yes, Dad x Mom. A relationship that ends nearly as soon as it begins. Let's put this right alongside the Exile love triangle and DaveTav in the "relationships that are teased but never manifest into anything meaningful" pile.

"Ackshually, everyone was born from a vat of slime on a distant meteor and sent back to Earth to live out their lives!" - the ramblings of an utter lunatic.

Like god fucking forbid the kids be normal people placed in extraordinary circumstances.

The babies all gravitate to the things they'll have a connection to in the future. Nanna gets her son's hat, Bro gets Cal, etc. Dave clings to Maplehoof, which doesn't seem like a clear connection. Except... that's Rose's horse, isn't it? Ohhh. It all makes sense now. 😏

This exchange is a top 10 Karkat moment for sure.

The supposed saviors that will revive the human race aren't even human, they're slime creatures! Beyond the fact that none of them are human, the Superman analogy falls flat because none of these kids are humanity's protectors. They're just following the whims of a game that ultimately does not give a fuck about any of them.

I need "JOHN EGBERT, YOU HAVE ASSASSINATED MY PATIENCE." emblazoned on a banner or something.

Also Karkat calls Superman a "Caucasian alien" and he also refers to a genie as an "Earth Arabian" in an earlier log.

He really knows a lot about different human ethnic groups, for some reason.

I think about "you always call jail the slammer when you are extra angry" on a somewhat regular basis.

Sassacre is killed, but since he was a human, his death is inconsequential. Grandpa, a slime homunculus just like Nanna, is given new life, which is a cause for celebration. This whole sequence is quite morbid with Sassacre's bloody corpse just hanging out in the frame.

But wait, if Nanna and Grandpa are adopted siblings, and John and Jade are their "genetic children"... augh, never mind! This is what I mean when I say ectobiology produces all kinds of unfortunate relationships. I don't want to think about any of this pseudo-incest anymore. How are there people who make it their whole online careers to dissect this garbage so they can harass people about this shit? Don't they get tired? It's giving me a headache.

Rose is even referred to as John's "daughter" in the title of this flash. I'm not just blowing smoke when I say that John is everyone dad. That's literally what just happened.

Now that we're finally done with this segment, I'll cap it off with this: Nothing of value was added with the inclusion of ectobiology. I know I've been throwing around the phrase "waste of time" in these posts, but this bit of worldbuilding is unequivocally, without a doubt, the biggest fucking waste of time in this entire comic.

Woof. Shall we move on?

While Davesprite and Terezi sort of reconciled in their conversation and formed a bit of a bond, Dave doesn't receive her nearly as amicably. Why is she doing the "1S TH1S YOU" joke with Dave when that was a bit she did with Davesprite?

Oh right, because she thinks that same relationship will carry over to "real Dave". She sees them as the same person just like everyone else. Lovely.

Dave thinks he can burn Terezi by repeatedly insulting her blindness, even though it's clear that it doesn't bother her at all. This is really weak, especially when compared to his log with Tavros where he forced Tavros to block him.

Terezi seems to have completely given up on John and now wants to be annoying and nasty to Dave instead. She has officially been downgraded from minor antagonist to obnoxious interloper.

Tavros could only ever enjoy himself when he could escape to Prospit, be mobile, and most importantly fly. Nobody ever wants to talk about how Tavros has a lot of avoidance issues, how he always shrinks away from action and confrontation, and how he copes with adversity through escapism (both in a figurative sense through his interest in fantasy, and in a literal sense when he dreams on Prospit). A big part of his character comes from Peter Pan, the archetype of childlike escapism! IDK man, it sucks to see people reduce him to this lovable, pure-hearted woobie while ignoring the key part of his character.

Just like with Davesprite, Terezi just needed to send the right drawing for Dave's opinion of her to flip. Fantastic conflict resolution right there.

[S] Descend is the End of Act flash for Act 4. It might be the most ambitious flash up to this point. Lots of guest artists contributed here, and it's at this point where Homestuck really begins to feel like a much more collaborative project instead of solely Hussie's work. I don't mean to discredit the music team when I say that, because they've been around since the start, but this feels more substantial since Homestuck is a primarily visual work.

Anyway, Bro slices a meteor in half to save Dave's life, and later has his rocket board transport Dave into the game safely. Chalk that up to his list of noble deeds to try and balance out his dastardly ones.

Jack fucks shit up indiscriminately, so why does he spare WV? Feels a little out of character for him.

The brief Jack and Bro fight is pretty sweet. I'm not a shonen guy, but I'm getting that same sort of energy from this. Knowing that Bro probably knew all about the kinds of monsters he'd have to fight in Sburb, he has probably been training for something like this for most of his life. Had Jack not gotten god powers, Bro probably could've wasted him.

I like to think that Rose's merging with her doomed self is what causes her to act so destructive and nihilistic from this point on. She wants to destroy the game that killed her.

So okay... when Dave and Rose gave John their bunnies for his present, both of them clearly put a lot of thought in their gifts. Dave gifted him a piece of merch from his favorite movie. Rose restored an old heirloom using John's previous gift to her. Jade assembled "a fun and completely ridiculous thing" that has no sentimental meaning and only carries a vague sense of importance.

Does she just not know what he likes? This is less a gesture of friendship and more of her blindly fulfilling the whims of Sburb. I really struggle to see how Jade fits in this friend group dynamic. She's like the weird kid that the others let hang around out of pity.

Waow! After all that buildup with the box mystery, the bunny and Jack are going to have a showdown! Finally we can see what all the fuss is about and why this bunny is so important.

... Or Jack can just fly away and they never fight at all. Cool Hussie. It's so cool how you spent several pages devoted to this plot point only to let it fizzle out like this. Incredible writing.

How much time do you think elapsed between Grandpa bringing Dream!Jade's corpse aboard his airship and gutting, cleaning, stuffing, and mounting her? He probably did it all after he flew off, but I like to imagine him doing this all before that while Mom and Dad just stood around awkwardly waiting for him to finish.

Act 4 had its ups and its downs. A lot of downs. The ups also felt a little bittersweet because for every intriguing story hook like the Exile love triangle, Dave's relationship with Tavros, Rose and her mother, or anything involving Davesprite and doomed Rose, they all amount to nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Homestuck truly is a collection of fun ideas all unfortunately cobbled together by someone who doesn't know how to properly execute them in a story. The colorful art and the kickass music can only serve to cover up the flaws so much before the veneer peels and you see the ugly cracks underneath. I wish we lived in a world where Andrew "writing is easy" Hussie had an editor to salvage the good stuff and throw shit like ectobiology into the garbage.

If it sounds like I'm wrapping things up, think again. This journey isn't over yet. It's time for Act 5! People like to joke about how you should skip all the way to that one, but after everything I've read so far... I wouldn't blame anyone if they did.

Yes, exactly this!!! As an ABDL, I see people say shit about ABDL/ageplay all the time that just... colossally miss the point of the kink.

A big part of kink and BDSM is power dynamics, particularly dom and sub dynamics. Ageplay is the same. Another large part is roleplay. In, lets say a vampire scene, you might have a dom who takes on the role of a vampire and the sub as their unfortunate victim. It's a fantasy scenario, the sub doesn't actually want to be kidnapped and tortured by a vampire, and the dom doesn't actually want to be a vampire that kidnaps and tortures someone. It's the same as someone playing an antagonist in a roleplay game, it's a fictional scenario that everyones on board for. BDSM is completely between consenting adults, who talk things out before hand and have safewords.

In an ageplay scene/relationship, one party typically takes on the dom role of caretaker, while the other takes on the sub role of child (theres exeptions, of course, but I'm generalizing). They roleplay within this power imbalance, often getting into a headspace like people do with any form of roleplay. Again, it's a fantasy scenario that everyone is on board for.

My partner isn't having sex with me in a onesie because he wants to have sex with a child, he's having sex with me because we're both turned on by the power dynamic between us (and also I'm hot and he'd have sex with me regardless). He likes taking on a caring, parental role, and I like taking on a naive, innocent role.

There's also other reasons that someone might be into ageplay/ABDL outside of the power dynamic. The might be aroused by the taboo incest idea of it, they might have a humiliation fetish for getting dressed up as a baby, or the might just have fetish for diapers themselves. Importantly, none of these involve actual children because, as stated, BDSM is between consenting adults. If its not, then it's assult.

I see shit all the time about how ageplay/ABDL is still bad because it's "still a representation of a child" (ah yes, my favorite type of child, the one that looks like a grown woman with massive tits), which is just... such a stupid point. Trying to put "a representation of a child" on the same level as actual children really stupid, because it's not an actual child, and takes conversations away from the actual children that are getting hurt.

Also, even if people were only into ageplay because they want to have sex with children (which they've done science and found isn't the case), isn't it better that they're doing it with consenting adults as opposed to actual children? I've always found that argument kinda stupid because of that.

I don't support reporting these artists/blogs. Blocking them and the tags they write for should be fine. And if there are people who actually write Itachi as that kind person, maybe they need to tag their posts properly. Instead of the character tag, they should go with a specific tag they can use for their fics. It should be a common knowledge that what they're writing might not be everyone's cup of tea.

As far as incest arts/fics are concerned, yeah, they're unavoidable. Those are the only ones I've seen here. And I don't mind anyone interpretating their relationship that way. I do, however, have an issue when people try to suggest that Kishimoto was writing their relationship more than brotherly. And it's awful because I've seen some of their most innocent moments being labeled sexual/romantic.

It also bothers me because when I'm writing them myself, I tend to lean more towards emotional intimacy which would translate a little into physical intimacy too, and I'm CONSTANTLY walking on eggshells that those moments I write could be misconstrued to what I don't intend them to be. People on AO3 can be merciless who sometimes end up saying things they shouldn't to anyone. So, it's frustrating to me too, and probably to other writers and they've had to deal with it as well.

I agree there should be more fics on them as siblings because this fandom does them absolutely no justice. They had the strongest bond and all things that made Naruto so good. I wish there were many more fics exploring them. AUs or otherwise. But alas.

Something on the topic of Subspace.

Look, I love him. I love shoving headcanons onto him and making him a degenerate weirdo, but I would never say he's 'innocent', or 'cute', or 'twinky'. Now, I'm not going to discuss his sexuality it my mind, that's not the point of this hot take. The point is his personality.

He is the lead scientist/engineer of a large, powerful, most likely evil faction. He has created, for this faction, murderous, aggresive robots. He actually shows some level of 'fondness', towards these menaces to society (crying to them, calling them his children, blah blah blah), even being fully aware of their destructive purposes. He is most likely planning to take over crossroads, and, lastly, he RIPPED OUT A MAN'S EYE. He is not a sillly little twink. He is a fully grown maniac. Now, am I saying you're in the wornd for putting him in twinkish clothing? No. Tbh, evil characters can wear... 'sexy' clothing, as long as you acknowledge that they are, at base, evil. I find it ironic, really, to put such blatantly horrendous concepts of people into such skimpy attire.

I would also like to say that there is nothing wring with imagining him to be gay, or that he has crushes, or is whiny (because he is whiny), or that he's a very sexually charged person. Yes, the phighters don't have genitals or sex, but making out is still a thing, and people write whatever they want to write atthis point. A pink lego-man getting railed by another lego-man is the least of our problems when people are writing actual rape and incest.

The only thing that annoys me, personally, is when people try to make him just 'a silly goober.' You can make him as horny or feminine or whatever as you want, as long as you acknowledge that he is a horrible person, who does not deserve to be thought of as innocent or sweet. If I'm being truthful, it's not even Subkit that I see him being mischaracterized in the most (it's Medkit), it's in Substaff where I see Subspace being characterized as if he's a little baby who just wants to be loved, and who will make an attempt to be a sweet, gentle partner. He WOULD NOT. I also see this done with Banhammer and Broker and, of course, Medkit. People love taking rude and stoic, or crazed and evil characters and making them sweet and soft and needy. I'll speak on that more another time though.

Subspace is evil. He is a whiny bitch, yes, but he is also a crazed man (with a decaying/rotting body, btw). He might be gay, he might be horny, Idk, but he isn't soft, he isn't sweet, and he is TOXIC in all senses.

in modern day Westeros, the Targaryen family owns a very, very old company. I keep debating what it is but my main thoughts are real estate or finance (specifically finance houses or hedge funds) – or the company has grown enough to have branches in a lot of fields. Viserys is the President of the company with Rhaenyra set to inherit it when he dies or retires, Otto Hightower is his VP, Daemon is tentatively chief of operations, and Alicent wants her eldest son Aegon to inherit the company instead of Rhaenyra, but Aegon does not give a shit at all. (also this leans into book lore with Alicent being older than Rhaenyra because she is not marrying Viserys at 14/15)

The Targaryen children all have far too much money and freedom for their own good, but their access to that money (and ability to live at the family house and/or in various family-owned properties) is dependent on them working for the family business I'm still world building some of the details but it is essentially our world but instead of our countries & cities & etc, it's in Westeros) The concept of Daenyra's AU specifically is that 22 year old Daenyra Targaryen, socialite nepo baby princess (except to her parents, who do not care for her) has just graduated university and returned home. Because her father doesn't really care about her, and is still sexist despite having a female heir/only liking his eldest daughter, Daenyra gets a job as Aegon's personal assistant. It's not too bad, really. Sure, it's a lot of work since Aegon doesn't care about his job and she has to basically babysit him, but he's always been her favourite relative anyway, her job is pretty simple, and she has lots of money to do things she actually likes. Unfortunately for Aegon, what she actually likes is annoying and teasing him until he finally fucks her. She knows he's been checking her out for several years now (and Targaryens are still devoted to keeping it in the family, so to speak), and she's been waiting for this moment for far too long

On the topic of sexism and Rick's treatment of Summer in Rick and Morty...

I wish Rick Sanchez’s sexism was treated as a part of his character worth exploring instead of being half-retconned and praised as character development despite the change never being properly explained or addressed.

We all know he stopped being as overtly sexist to Summer and started to appreciate her skill and dependability, but when exactly did this happen and why? By the end of season 1's "Raising Gazorpazorp" he outright said he didn’t learn anything and that was the only episode specifically about his sexism in the entire show.

And say you want to interpret this scene as Rick being denial and just not wanting to admit that he was wrong. Okay, so do we see him actually changing from this point on?

No, he continues to belittle her in "Something Ricked This Way Comes." Summer's whole arc in that episode is about her appreciating her boss because he respects her, unlike Rick. And in the end Rick once again does the whole "learning a lesson is dumb" bit. Though I suppose they do bond a bit by beating up Mr. Needful together. (Funnily enough, it's the most stereotypically masculine ending with them bodybuilding together and Summer going "yeah bro yeah" ...This trend of dismissing emotional growth and showing violence as a form of bonding could be analyzed more from a feminist perspective but I'm not here to do that now.)

Season 2 provides us with more scenes of Summer and Rick getting along better than in season 1 but the problems with his sexism persist and he still doesn't bring her on adventures. In "The Ricks Must Be Crazy" he even went on to demean her by mentioning her boobs out of nowhere at the end of the episode. So bonding with Summer didn't decrease his casually sexist language towards her at all.

Season 3 is where it gets a little interesting because it was the first season with female writers and here we begin to see a subtle shift in how Rick values her. He actually cheers her on and gives her fond nicknames in "Rickmancing the Stone" which he never did before. This change is notable but it's not consistent with Rick's previous characterization and the reason for it is up to interpretation.

In fact, we still see Rick's sexism turn up here and there in season 3. For example in “Morty’s Mind Blowers” both Rick and Morty gang up on Summer by calling her a dumb bitch even though she fixed everything for them. I find that scene particularly notable since their ungratefulness is the joke. And it shows how Rick uses Summer without respecting her.

Now with current season 6-7 lore we've been told that Rick respects Summer because she reminds him of Diane.

I'm sorry, what? How did we get here? This show's writing is so wildly inconsistent. Did something happen in season 4 or 5 to bridge this gap and make it make sense? Let me check... In season 4's "Promortyus" Rick and Morty spend time destroying a planet together and forget Summer was even with them. Got it, so that's more ignoring and dismissing Summer. In season 5's "A Rickconvenient Mort" Rick only chooses to hang out with her after Morty ditches him and then he eventually ends up ditching her...

But wait. In season 5's "Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion" Rick chooses to bring her with them to Boob World because they need to bring a female with them in order to get in for free. Once again there are heavy sexist vibes at the beginning of this episode. Later on though Summer agrees to Rick's change of plans to collect the Gotron Ferrets and she becomes his assistant in hopes of gaining his admiration and approval. Then he fires her when he finds someone more suited to the job, once again showing how he was just using her and still doesn't respect her. This decision ends up biting him in the ass, but it doesn't really matter because Summer arrives with her giant incest baby to save him anyway.

I think the implication might be that he respects her more for coming to save him with the incest baby but that isn't actually confirmed anywhere. We just get Morty and Summer repeating the word "family" a bunch to drive in the point that the episode is supposed to be about the family coming together I guess? It doesn't feel like a moment of character development for Rick in the slightest. As you can tell I'm really not a fan of the super sloppy way this episode was written and I feel like this sort of bad character writing is one of the reasons why season 5 got such a bad rap, on top of certain jokes falling flat with audiences.

Still, even if you consider this weak episode the turning point for Rick's attitude toward Summer, what does it say that this teenage girl he treated so badly for the better part of 5 seasons apparently reminds him of his wife? Is it just that he's finally seeing her in a different light now that she's proven she's faithful and dependable and does what he tells her to do? And doesn't that still echo a similar kind of sexism?

I don't buy the claim that he treats her as an equal when he essentially uses her to do his chores and Summer herself expressed that she felt taken advantage of. Doesn't that imply that's how he treated Diane too? And doesn't the fact that he gave a robot meant to do his bidding his wife's voice further support this interpretation?

I really hope the show doesn't keep suggesting that Rick was a loving, ideal husband to Diane because it just doesn't line up with what we've seen of his character. Everything here implies he would have been a sexist asshole and choosing to ignore that within the narrative in favor of making him more sympathetic would be cowardly.

They literally look like they're in agony in some still frames so be prepared for the plot, the ✨DRAMAAA✨ and character interactions to do some heavy lifting at times. Settings though are drop dead gorgeous with the most immersive atmospheric feel to them, everywhere is so washed and somber like I'd expect a vampire world to be, no shade to Case study of Vanitas, execution is key and both shows are nailing their moods for me.

Now for the names...tf name's their child Dali Delico??? Sounds like some Italian deserted I'd eat without hesitation.

Comically misses the point as the incest, stealing, reaving, thralldom and cannibalism still happen, she's just now prim and proper about it and has a single silken gown she bought from Lannisport and likes staring at the pretty stained glass window that broke when they stole it from a motherhouse. Lord of Barrowton circa Dunk & Egg, so right after the Spring Sickness - everyone in his family died and he's obsessed with it <3 he spends all the money of House Dustin into barrows and graves and turns farmlands into graveyards and knows the cause of death of every major family in their lands at least five generations back. Thinks that the ghosts talk to him sometimes, he actually just has really bad insomnia. Convinced that he'll die under very specific circumstances. Gets into a relationship with a wildling that wants to murder him real bad during the Raymun Redbeard thing. It's cute and very violent

Lenore Sand beloved..... She's an Orphan of the Greenblood. Daughter of a major courtier in the Sunspear court and an Orphan, was raised by her mom until she almost drowned in the greenblood and got sick from it, was dumped on dad's footstep after that. Really keeps to the Rhoynish customs, dreams of getting to do a pilgrimage to the Rhoyne. Also a Greenseer!! But in a weird Rhoynish vibe of being underwater.... merging with fish and turtles and eels and critters. keeps a pet white raven she stole from the citadel that she named after her annoying younger legitimate brother Edgar and makes the raven say bad things in his voice

Lady Eris Hightower. Originally an Oakheart, she married a second son of House Redwyne. It was originally a pretty classic courtly romance, and they got married, but he didn't actually want kids!! And that fucked with her deeply because. Like. That destroys every conceit of womanhood in Westeros, right? And it's not like they have protection, so it's just. Moon tea and moon tea and being on bed half the time until eventually he dies mysteriously :). She marries a widower but childless Lord Hightower and they actually have a pretty good relationship, until he goes off with Daeron the Daring into Dorne with her eldest son and that's a breaking point. She goes full stereotype of an evil lady - she starts sleeping with septas, septons, knights and courtiers, ruling the court while he's at war and occupying Dorne, when he returns she's a little bit pregnant and the baby comes out not really looking like her or the dad, so she dyes her hair to pretend her hair was the right color all along for the kid :) kills her husband again so that's two for two and rules as regent for her children for a good hot second. just everything wrong with feudalism in a single woman. she was driven crazy by it and she's the exact flavour of crazy that only these highly hierarchical and fucked systems can produce.

Florian Storm! This is my less fucked OC but I still love them. They're a Steward of the Night's Watch that thoroughly embezzles the NW's funds to get themselves nice silks and jewellery and trades with the wildlings on the side to get some better food and all that. Bastard from House Trant, was gonna be a maester because they were an awful fighter and their dad hated them for that and being feminine until they beat up an acolyte a bit too much and they died (this is because they were having gay sex on the side and it spiraled out). the fact that they were condemned to hang for murder made their dad very happy and proud of them so they got to pack to the Wall with a nice set of sable gloves and mink cloak. They're just a bit scummy <3

Lore Olympus Rambles - aka. who the fuck could that child deity be???

If I'm being honest with you, I'm not here to truly come to conclusions. This will simply be a post compiling different arguments as to the possibilities on the answer to this question. Some of them will be mine, but not all of them.

Sorta-Option-A: It might not actually be Dionysus

Ok, I'm just gonna say it. Dionysus has probably already been born in this 10 year interval, or at least exists in some capacity.

I assume this because Minos is already dead -he is one of the judges of the dead-, and he is the father of Dionysus' wife Ariadne. If Minos is dead, then it's because Daedalus and a bunch of princesses already boiled him, which means that the events of Theseus and the Minotaur already happened.

Also, Zeus was sleeping with Semele 10 years ago, Zeus is a sexist pig and mortals get old fast so :/ I doubt Zeus would still sleep with her if she had matured. I mean it's not impossible, but still.

This however brings the question of how Rachel would avoid the -admittedly kinda distant, but still- incest if these 2 parentages are true. Here's my guesses on how the story would go to solve this:

Minos thinks he is the son of Zeus, but he's just the son of Europa and maybe Asterius?? Maybe that'll be a mini character arc for him, assuming that he's the one who's butthurt over his former glory.

If all of this is true, however, then Ariadne and Dionysus are probably still very young. Maybe this version will recontextualize Theseus' betrayal as not only taking advantage of a girl who loved him but a little girl at that and then leaving her stranded away from her family. I mean, he did abduct Helen that one time when she was way too young, and we know she already exists in the story by now, so. Not the first time he would screw over a child. Maybe Dionysus and Ariadne will be a childhood romance in this version of the story.

If Dio is still a child then, and Perse will become one of his foster parents -debatably the most important in fact- then Hades' alcoholism could probably be foreshadowing as to how he will discover his divine domain.

In some tellings of the story, however, Semele commits suicide and Dio takes her from the underworld to deify her, so that's another strong contender for how they'll meet. Or you know, she could just live in Naxos for a while until they meet.

Or maybe after Zeus sowed him into his ballsack thigh Dionysus was just sorta born as an adult like Athena. It wouldn't be the biggest change from ""canon"" in this story.

However there's another way of kinda almost solving the incest thing, which takes us too...

Option B: Zagreus, but it's also Dionysus, aka. Orphic Dionysus.

The biggest piece of evidence for this is Hera's current situation with Kronos. Whichever way orphic Dionysus' or Zagreus' parentage swings, Hera "sends the Titans" to kill him because he will represent a threat to the cycle of successions.

Maybe this child deity is waiting for a body to inhabit, which will be Perse and Hades' child, and Kronos is trying to persuade Hera to prevent this.

In at least one version, Semele is a sort of second womb for what remains of the baby. It would be a it jarring if the story introduced her for nothing after all. However then Dionysus wouldn't be a true son of Zeus, just the son of one of his lovers, and distantly his nephew by way of Hades? Listen, I just kinda want Zag to be a thing in the story.

Option C: Melinoë

An option which I considered relatively improbable but which @encephalopoda reinforced by reminding me that she's not just the goddess of ghosts, she is the bringer of nightmares. She fits neatly with the Underworld and Kronus' use of her powers.

If the deity is also whoever appeared in that mural, well, she is the only square female option here, although Dionysus was raised by his aunt as a girl in the myths and has an Androgynos epithet.

Option D: Demophon is sorta all of the above:

What happened in Attica, Hestia asked? Demophon happened is what. I'm actually kinda angry at myself for not getting it at first because I forgot Attica was part of Eleusis.

For those not in the know, Demeter disguised herself as an old woman and became a wet nurse to the children of Queen Metanira (who we see when she wakes up). She breastfeeds one of them, Triptolemon, and he instantly becomes an adult, then she tries to turn Demophon into a deity by anointing him in ambrosia and burning him over the fireplace, but then Metanira catched her and the ritual could not be completed.

So it is possible that this new deity is the result of that, if the timelines match.

Option E: No, it probably isn't Eileithyia

Remember when Hera said something about Hebe's "Lazy Sister" and we all assumed it was Athena? Nah, it was probably Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth.

She seems to be suggested because she is a female deity closely related to fertility and thus potentially the one in the mural, but I just don't see it champs :/

Its just, its so sad it could only happen in the lawless era of Baby Netflix because its just delicious. I think if more of marvel's ips were handled with a similar brush i might actually enjoy them. Not to say they have to all be Gritty Noirs Focused On Very Grounded Villains, but itd be nice if they really sat w their premises. I dunno if any of the movies w Steve and Bucky ever really get into that sorta thing, but theres such a depth you could get out of Steve and Bucky grappling with the future and adapting and challenging their 30s? Worldview, etc.

Tennant just did such a good job w Kilgrave. Simmons was uh terrifying lol. I realize I hadnt mentioned Trish and. Ough. Ough. I love her so much, like any good noir should elicit, I spent so much of her screentime murmuring "girl dont do this". I love her desperation and drive to help people even at her own peril. Much like Jessica, she can't help it, but unlike Jessica she's not physically strong enough to not be the damsel, so she hides in Rapunzel's pin-locked tower and learns to fight in the hopes that if the evil stepmother or a dragon comes she'll be ready. And then the dragon asks her to come in, politely, through the front door and she's so charmed by his candor that she's helpless. The entire rest of the show after Trish popped one of Simmons' pills to save Jessica, I was just looking at her like a dog eating something it's not supposed to.

"TRISH WALKER, WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR PURSE?! DROP IT RIGHT NOW! EMPTY YOUR PURSE YOUNG LADY--[MIMING PRYING HER LITTLE BAG OPEN]"

It really was like, incredible how harrowing every moment with Trish's mom was. The scene where she was trying to force Trish to purge was so hard to watch, made me cry.

And then theres Malcolm abd Robyn abd Reuben abd this isnt even getting into the deliciously toxic yuri wrt Hogarth and Pam and her ex-wife whose name I'm blanking on. Honestly this us just a testament to how beautifully female lead so much of the show felt, which really added so much punch to the themes they were tackling, especially since there were a ton of Kilgrave's victims who were men (but weren't solely the focus).

I really loved Malcolm, especially after they, blessedly, revealed that his addiction was less of some stereotypical black druggie horseshit abd that Kilgrave had just added another tool in his arsenal to keep a good guy under thumb. (To be clear whether his reasons for his addiction, he needed help and compassion, but I was wary of it as a like stock trope.) Learning he'd wanted to go into social work was gutwrenching.

I think, though, I was most impressed with Robyn and Reuben. From the outset they seemed very...Stock "Crazy" Apartment Weirdos, abd as was perhaps the intent, they made me very uncomfortable, especially with early appearances making it seem like there was some WEIRD incest going on. And then Reuben's little crush on Jessica happened and I dreaded every time he was on screen but gradually less because he was a little weirdo and more because he was so visibly a little weirdo head over heels for Jessica. I cried when he died, and I was shocked at how masterfully they made me care. And then Robyn's neuroses kept building in the background abd foreground as she desperately searched for Reuben, and even though she's absolutely weird and abrasive and perhaps needs anti-anxiety medication, she's so solidly a mourning person who was so afraid because as much as she felt like her brother couldn't survive without her (and woe, she was kinda right), she needed him. The scene in the penultimate? Episode? Of Season 1, where she sobs because his fucking charger finally came, days too late, because she told him express shipping was too expensive? Oh that crushed me and made me really gel w her very strongly as a character.

Everyone's Arcs were so good aaaaaaaaaaaaiaaaaaaa. (I love Luke Cage and i practically danced every time he was on screen. Just such a wonderfully grounded, traumatized man.)

ok so!! i obsess over spn + gender a lot, and one of my firmest beliefs is that the hypermasculine toxic masculinity-ness of sam and dean (mainly dean lol) keeps them from being physically affectionate in a lot of ways, but also makes the physical affection they do show more...sus. of course it's excused as "brothers," but....okay. lol.

now if they were both girls, they would be more physically affectionate, more "coupleish"--except that their behavior wouldn't be seen as weird...that's just what girls are like! on the other hand, i think the lines would be blurrier when it comes to sapphic homoeroticism and sisterly affection, and the sexual nature of their relationship could likely begin earlier.
