trying to figure out how to say this delicately. i do think that the pwhl is going to make some progress, and already the support for the league is showing how much of a market there is for women's sports even from a few years ago. but it's kind of been irking me to see so many posts that act like there has never been any arena for women's pro hockey before. like do you understand how many people — how many leagues!! — came before this to even make the pwhl a possibility. do you know how many people have fought tooth and nail for women's pro hockey for DECADES. i'm not saying don't support the league, but don't act like it's the perfect solution to a brand new issue

my rec list is very small for i don't really read fanfics and i only really read things when they're recc'd to me HOWEVER i do have a Very Small collection for you (descending by word count). under the cut cause the descriptions got long by accident Oops

1.) [EXPLICIT, READ WARNINGS BEFOREHAND] Chimera, by Andraste (Word Count: 1,304)

(Takes place in the Ultimate X-Men (2001) timeline) I can't really describe this fic adequately without telling the whole thing or accidentally doing an analysis on it: while it doesn't have a strict plot, calling it PWP isn't too accurate in my opinion either. The smut in this fic- in my reading- isn't meant to be erotic in the typical way we approach NSFW in fanfiction, but if I start to go in-depth on what that means this post is just going to be dissecting everything line-for-line LOL. The best way I suppose I can describe the premise of this fic is a "grim" scenario based around Charles reworking Erik's mind and keeping him "docile", and Erik catching on to what's been happening to him. This fic explores how Erik wants Charles to "atone" and confront the consequences for this meddling.

2.) As If Nothing Happened, by joshriku (Word Count: 3,289)

(Takes place amidst X-Men Unlimited (1993) #1) This fic expands on the X-Men Unlimited tidbit where Charles is rescued by a """"mysterious"""" figure (who we later learn is Erik in UXM 309) during the snowstorm he, Scott, and Ororo were entrapped by. Very domestic and "warm" and sprinkled with beautiful, playful back-and-forths, and is a joy to revisit if you want something cozy.

3.) [EXPLICIT, READ WARNINGS BEFOREHAND] Behind Closed Minds by f3armgneto (Word Count: 4,914)

(No specific verse or timeline) Honorable Mention Is Honorable i gotta include the fic that was written for me... i wasn't sure if you were looking for explicitly-stated comicverse fics only but i needed to do an honorable mention..... the art this fic's based off of is meant to be comicverse so surely that must count... Premise is essentially that Charles accidentally telepathically peeps on Erik showering and is incapable of moving beyond the instance without "proper resolution". Meanwhile on Erik's end, fully aware he'd been spied upon, thinks of a "countermeasure" to Charles' voyeurism (spoilers: it's more of a reward than a deterrent).

4.) it's going to be a long, long time, by joshriku

(Takes places amidst Krakoa period around AXE Judgment and X-Men Red) A series of events between Charles and Erik following the latter leaving to retire on Arakko. My summary does a poor job on highlighting the chemistry, dialogue, and longing between Erik and Charles in this: I can only beg you to give the fic some time to read it.

5.) not so tragic, my love- it's this dream, it's this sun, by joshriku

(Takes place post-gala/beginning-of-post of the Krakoa period, diverges from X-men: From The Ashes (2024)) Erik has Charles stay with him on Island M after the fall of Krakoa. It's no surprise Charles isn't doing so well mentally after losing everything, but- amidst the facsimile of some domestic joys- Erik wrangles with Charles' depression and anguish, the professor having long lost the light in his spirit to help his fellow mutants readjust after the downfall. (Guest Starring: Jean Grey who has a wonderfully written interaction with Charles- though this fic In Its Entirety is wonderfully written...)

when i was looking through my bookmarks i hadn't realized literally like. half of my rec list was written by joshriku AJLVKEJALK BUT THEM'S THE WORKS i owe them my life for getting charles and erik's voices, thoughts, and actions down so wonderfully. i hadn't read Number 5 in a while and i'm grateful for the excuse to do so: it's probably my favorite of their works that i have listed here, so if you read any of these fics i greatly suggest that one

One of the most retroactively funny things about season 1 of Yellowjackets now that it could not be more obvious that the writers have no idea where the story is going -- they said originally they had all 5 seasons planned out, but while that might be true for the teen/90s plotline they are clearly just winging the adult one -- is that the adult survivors acting like Misty is THE WORST when season 3 confirms Shauna is more unhinged than everyone else put together except maybe unmedicated Lottie.....which makes everyone acting like Misty is the pariah kinda hilarious. Adult Nat's first words to Misty in Season 1 are "Hi, Misty, you crazy bitch." Nat ilu but at this point with Shauna it's not even trauma bonding....she's causing your trauma lol. She made you cut up and decapitate your coach, probably the only healthy male mentor figure you ever had, and put his head on a stick so they could have a little Bacchalian dance around thingy. Even if the other YJs ever DID find out about Misty and the black box, as far as actions that could sabotage potential rescue vs ACTUAL rescue, I think it goes without saying what Shauna and (again, unmedicated) Lottie did was way, way, waaaaaaay worse.

giving psych another go after having watched the first season and a bit a couple years ago before stopping because I hadn't really been feeling it

I had a thought concerning New Age AU :D

I spend some time thinking about waht you said.

That the castle Nightmare (and dream and their family) lived in. The royal castle.

Is the tree of emotions.

So. So hear me out.

I wonder that. if the castle is the tree. does that mean it may be a bit sentient.

You said that nightmare can easily change it because he is conencted to it (the apple ritual) but i wonder if the castle itself is kinda sentient.

And VERY mad about how its powers got used.

Maybe the story of the twins. OG story. is connected to the prophecy. But it was a warning.

It was a warning to remain united. To trust your family and to listen to them when they ask for help. To believe them when they notice things about people youdon't notice.

To warn away from going out on your own. warnign away from searching for power that you shouldnt take. (the apples were never suposed to be eaten after all.)

And of those twins the one who ate the apple actually succeed in killing their twin. that the grieve of that moment intensified the emotions based power source into overdrive which caused the one who ate the apple to even gain godlike abilities.

the whole prophecy was a warning.

The royal family that settled in this place. found the story. found the tree (having recovered after the twin who ate the apple died) and instead of seeing a warnign. saw a to do list.

The lessons they took:

power makes you undefeatable

the power makes you stay in control

the best way to gain this power? eat an apple and kill someone important to you.

attachment is a weakness waiting to be used to grow more powerful.

sadly after they grabbed and misused one apple? they got paranoid. if they can use the tree to gain power others can too! so they cut the tree down. and to make sure it could never grow back. build the castle on top of it.

Meaning there is only ONE apple. the one consumed by the one true ruler. and the ruler neeeds to willingly summon their apple/soul to give to eat to the new ruler. to pass on the forbidden knowedge and power through lessons and traditions.

over time the trees influence took over the castle. but because the ruler ate the apple and has a direct connection they can still control the castle.

the tree/castle watches as nightmare broke the cycle. as nightmare refused to hurt ccino (adn so his brother) nightmare, even through fear chose love and trust.

the castle willingly helps and protects nightmare.

and when nightmare lost the apple's power? officially breaking that godforsaken cycle? the castle is just more protective. thorn now protect the castle and the trees around it hide it.

this is of course. lost knowledge. the royal family made sure to destroy the knowledge in fear of someone standing against them.

but nightmare managed to break it still.

and maybe... just maybe... now somewhere deep in the castle. deep underground as a forgotten meadow deep underground. in a beautiful little cave. a new tree starts to grow to truly help heal the land.

haha sorry this got long again lmao.

but yeah! If you have the tree/castle kinda sentient you can have that the very land was trying to sabotage the old rulers but couldn't do a lot because of the one apple's power and so having to listen.

it would be the source of all that powerful magic.

Okay. I love that this info has been lost completely to time. Like. The only one that's aware is the tree/castle itself.

I think the interpretation I like here is that, the stump is somewhere within the grounds, maybe even in the treasury or armory, but the *roots* make up the building kinda cypress tree style, so as they cut down the tree, the once vibrant life in the old roots turned to stone and was left almost completely powerless. (I am, unfortunately, a sucker for the idea that there was a time that *someone* treated the tree with respect 😔) (Also hense the new young tree sprout growing out of the ground deep in a hidden cavern, because the roots relocated the power to a safer location.)

The castle, desperately grasping for that power back, so no one might mis-use it ever again. And then seeing Nightmare resist its twisted urges (like u said) in the name of love and care? It rips that power away the moment it loses its hold on Nightmare, and takes the seeds of magic away from harm's reach. But... Nightmare isn't upset by the loss. He doesn't go digging to get the power back. He... doesn't dig for *any* power.

Less blood is shed in vain on its land, more plants and ecosystems are allowed to thrive.

And gods, just the idea that the castle grows up plants and trees to better defend itself abd the people inside? This reaction is spontanious and Night assumes it connects to the state of the magic leaving him, but it doesn't harm anyone so ehhh. But the tree is trying to encourage and protect those who helped it without knowing...

And dude the whole story of the og story and both twins dying and then a family misconstrued that entire story into one of power and consumption and betrayal??? Waughhh it's beautiful....

I'm losing my mind here at the storybook level magical healing and forgiveness and learning lessons, I love it so so dearly <3
